I absolutely love this song. It’s so beautiful.

I was having some difficulty trying to figure out my next overlooked artist. Luckily this past week’s episode of SYTYCD saved me the trouble and introduced me to her. The artist I will post songs about in the coming weeks is swedish singer Lykke Li. Her sound is like a mixture of electro and soul and a hint of pop. It’s interesting.

Oddly enough I heard two of her song in the past 24 hours. One song in SYTYCD and the other song in the movie New Moon (yes I’m a twilight fan…deal with it). Both song really captivated me and so I checked out her album on iTunes and by the previews there are some good songs. I’m gonna try to get the album and share my views a little later.

Anyway this is the first song called Time Flies and the choreography piece is amazing! I really love this couple and I can see them both going all the way to the Top 4. Choreographer Sonya Tayeh really knocked it out the park this week. Check it out!

Carly's not taking things seriously

So last night was Episode 8 of Final Cut for semester one. Like always we began at 8pm sharp following on after The TigerFace Show and things started off quite well… for like the first 30 seconds anyway. That’s when I forgot half of what I was supposed to say for the introduction and Diane kept talking over the music because she assumed the mics were turned down; funny at the time, kind of embarrassing in hindsight. Since the big film of the week was New Moon, we decided to focus our New Releases reviews on that. The only other film of significance to come recently (that we haven’t reviewed already) was Jim Carey’s A Christmas Carol, but we’ve decided to save that until at least December, out of principal if nothing else.

So yeah, that was the show. Some of you might be asking why we didn’t play the more prominent songs from New Moon, like Death Cab or The Editors. Well the reason for that is simply because we reported on the release of the OST a few weeks ago and had already ran some of those tracks. It was a personal thing really, I just didn’t want to recycle songs, and I felt like it wouldn’t be fair to the people who listen to us every week. Besides, ‘Meet Me on the Equinox‘ isn’t even in the film, (Wtf?) whereas Possibility is played during one of its few good scenes. Lykke Li is someone you should check out.

Anyway, this week was a bit different because we actually had Ciarán and James in the studio with us doing Cult Classics live, as opposed to pre-recorded. They sounded really good live, most likely because for the past fortnight they’ve been getting some good practice in. (Listen to ‘Homophonic’ Mondays at 9pm!) I also had Ciarán on photo duty since I wanted some pictures of us at work for both here and our Facebook Page. In summation, I was quite pleased with how everything turned out. The Rant sounded great, which was a huge relief since I was pretty worried that playing the snippets (unedited) might be a bit glitchy, but I was pleasantly surprised.

Next week we’ll probably be looking at The Road; Viggo Mortensen’s new movie set in a post-apocalyptic world about man and his son trying desperately to survive. Hopefully we’ll also get to review Paranormal Activity; providing it gets a semi-widespread release. The commercials I’ve seen for it look really clever. They’re advertising it as one of the scariest movies this decade but instead of playing us clips of the movie itself, they show us the audience’s reactions. Colour me intrigued.

That’s about it for this week at college. Even though I finished my Media Studies assignment today, (design a book cover and write a document to accompany it explaining the conceptualisation, process, semiotics, etc. We did The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time by Mark Haddon) another one has snuck up on me. Damn you Research Methods! I also have Video Production, Crime and the Media and a media studies exam at the end of the semester. Suffice to say, I’m a tad stressed. Luckily I’m only working Saturday evening and 10 hours on Sunday, (which despite how it may seem, is actually a lot less than what I usually do) so tomorrow will be spent doing research in the morning, and a lot of sitting down with Ciarán and James in the evening. This pleases me.

Aujourd’hui je suis de bonne humeur malgré le mauvais temps mais j’ai décidé d’offrir  les cocos. J’ai quitté les cours super tôt et me voici sur mon vaio entrain d’écouter de la musique à la recherche du morceau qui tue ça mère à foisse les cacahuètes les bananes flambées. I’m not going to engage in the topic of whether New Moon is a good movie or not (but if you are interested in my thoughts on it, feel free to read my review at michaelbayistheantichrist.wordpress.com).  I would though like to draw everyone’s attention to the fact that the soundtrack for New Moon is pretty damn good.  Sadly, I think I must add that this is most likely awesome for the Twilight franchise, but not so awesome for these artists’ reputations.  Whatever gets people listening to good music, right?  … Maybe.

Her captivating vocals fit this tune beautifully, and the bare echoes of the piano mirror the echoes of doubt in a woman’s mind as she asks: “Will you still love me tomorrow?”

“Kings of Leon Vs. Lykke Li – Knocked up”

I love the holidays, especially Thanksgiving. Who wouldn’t love an entire day dedicated to giving thanks over a feast of meats, casseroles, and desserts galore. My mouth is watering just thinking about it.

Thanksgiving in my family is definitely an event. Whether it’s my father’s feast of meats, or my Grandmother’s casserole smorgasboard, I am never left unsatisfied. This year will be spent at my Grandma and Grandpa’s house in Oklahoma for the biannual Thanksgiving/family reunion. Every other year the entire family comes together from Oklahoma, Texas, New York, Salt Lake City, and Tennessee. It’s quite an event and I must say the food can’t get any better anywhere else. I can’t wait to take lots of pics on Thursday and share all of the good eats with everyone this weekend, but for now I wanted to share my favorite dish that has become a Hibbard family staple.

The origins of this recipe started with my amazing Aunt Janice. She was a wonderful woman full of spirit and love, and her Squash Casserole reflected all of the love she conveyed. The recipe has been passed throughout the family but for the most part has maintained it’s original flavor. I made just two small changes, even though it tastes amazing with it. You really must make this recipe, it’s the best casserole I have ever had!!

Aunt Janice’s Squash Casserole

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Boil a large pot of water. Slice the squash, onion, and jalapenos. Boil the squash in the water until slightly tender. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat and saute the onions and jalapenos until tender.

In a large bowl mix together the cream of chicken soup and the next three ingredients, through the sour cream. Set aside. In a medium microwave-safe bowl melt the butter and mix the package of cornbread mix until coated.

In a 9×13 casserole dish spoon half of the cornbread mixture on the bottom of the pan or until covered, but not too thick of a layer. Drain the squash and add to the creamy mixture, along with the onion mixture, and spoon into the pan on top of the cornbread mixture. Top with the cheese, then top the cheese with the cornbread mixture, forming a nicely covered layer, but again, not too thick (you don’t want the casserole to be too dry).

Place in the oven, uncovered, on the middle rack and bake for 30-35 minutes until bubbly.

Kings of Leon: I absolutely love this band. My old roommate first introduced them to me back in 2003 and I’ve been hooked ever since. These Tennesse boys can rock out to great tracks like “Holy Roller Novocaine” and “Red Morning Light”, then slow it down with songs like their newest hit “Use Somebody”, the video shown below. The following video is my favorite cover of Kings of Leon’s “Knocked Up”  by Lykke Li. Turn the sound up and enjoy!

Le dernier post de notre chat national m’a rappelé que j’attendais impatiemment la Soundtrack du nouveau Twilight : New Moon. Oui je l’avoue j’attends ce film depuis longtemps parce que je raffole des vampires et des loups-garou et que Dude Whatever (le vampire) est trop hot et que Someone Something (le loup-garou) est trop cut.

NOOOOOOTTT !!!!! Par contre, j’attendais vraiment la soundtrack pour voir ce que mes fidèles amis nous réservaient. Twilight les a-t-il transformés en de monstres commerciaux mainstream ou ont-ils réussi à nous présenter des chef-d’oeuvres comme ils l’ont souvent fait auparavant…

Je parle évidemment de Bon Iver, Lykke Li, OK Go, Grizzly Bear, Sea Wolf et plusieurs autres artistes qui ne méritent pas de se faire connaître par la population pour ne pas être “corrupted by the DARK side of the music industry”.

I am kinda into that alternative music sound these days. Not that these artists are too alternative. But still, they make really great music.

Will you still love me tomorrow was written by Gerry Goffin and the great Carole King – the duo that also brought us the Loco-motion and Natural Woman. The ballad was originally recorded by The Shirelles and topped most major charts in 1961. Since then, it has been recorded by many great acts, including Ben E King, Laura Branigan, The Four Seasons and King herself. More recently, the song was recorded by Amy Winehouse and we now have another great performer to add to list, Lykke Li.

Anyone that knows me, knows that I have a great love for the swedish born beaut. Everything about her drives me absolutely nuts. Her voice paralyzes me, while her lyrics inspire me. The tune may not be a Li original but she does one hell of a job to make it her own. Bravo! I must admit that while Lykke’s version is sad as hell, so much that listening to it makes me want to rip my heart out, its done so well I just can’t stop myself from going back for more.

Haha, I just listened to Lykke Li’s contribution to the New Moon Soundtrack and it reminded me of two things. Firstly, that Lykke Li is a great singer and secondly that I haven’t given you guys anything from her yet though I like her so much that I think everone should check her out and buy her records.
So I decided to upload a song of Kleerup for you which features Lykke Li and is pretty good in my opinion. I don’t know anything else about Kleerup though… judging from this song it’s probably also worth checking out. I’ll catch you guys up if I learn anything about him.

Am I allowed to self diagnose?

I’m really beginning to think I might be manic depressive. As I’m sure anyone who has ever met me knows, I can be in a mint mood, really happy and confident and 100% stress free… but I have times where I feel like screaming, don’t see the point in waking up and dread the rest of my life…

I’m not depressive in a suicidal kind of way, don’t get me wrong. I’m not about to top myself. I don’t want things to end - I want them to change.

I guess I just wish I could do something different with my life, to pack up and move far away and start it all again – and hopefully not mess it all up and end up a loner all over again. Everyone keeps telling me lame things like ‘well do something about it’ or ‘go out and meet people’ but it’s not as simple as that! I go out, I meet people, then they walk off and I never see them again. Apparently I’m not interesting enough to keep people talking…either that or I panic and run…

Ah well, guess I’ll send out invitations next time I’m organising a pity party like this one…
