Jennifer Lynch’s second film is horrifying.

this film is unnerving, painful, and dripping with directorial finesse. the 15 year gap between her first film (Boxing Helena) and this, her second film, must have been filled with practice. her first film is a beautiful haunting piece, but her confidence and eye for shots and angels is improved tenfold in this film. aesthetically speaking, this is an astonishingly beautiful film. and hands down one of the top five films of 2008.

the film deals with ideas of  ’secret humanity’ and closed doors. every single character, with the exception of the true ’survivor’ of the film, is shown as two faced to a certain degree. each one of them is a different person in different lights. their humanity, their identity, and their souls, all being secrets that they only reach for at different points. the constant changing and morphing of each person’s public face makes for a very interesting study of just what is and isnt secret. Bill Pullman puts cameras up to perform the interviews, and their presence changes things only the littlest bit. people still wear the masks they need and want. it is interesting that the only time masks are pulled off by people is when the cameras arent looking. when the table is pushed against the wall, knocking over the camera, then and only then do we see who the people in the oddly wall papered room really are. and after the ‘natural cameras’, or eyes, of the living souls after the first attack are hidden and closed off do we see the proverbial masks come off the killers, though they continue to wear their rubber ones.

if Jennifer Lynch’s last film was about the mechanics of love in a heartless society, then this one is about the mechanics of humanity in a heartless society. one cant help but notice the heaping amounts of implies misanthropy throughout the film. but there is a silver lining. there is a chunk of true human love throughout the film, even if it is a strange and scarred version of love. also, there is a system of justice. it is not justice the way a sane man would see it, but it is justice in its own way. the final ’survivor’ puts together the puzzle, and sees past all the masks and lies. as a result, they are the only one who is in touch with their own humanity. and the only one that is too removed from the situation to even bother killing. the ’survivor’ is a strange and foreign object to the rest of the characters. and once you see who it is, it suddenly becomes clear why.

surviving is important to humanity, but honesty is far more important. and thats why the lone ’survivor’ walks away at the end. it realized that honesty outweighed surviving. so it was rewarded with both.

this film is a wonderful chunk of art that i fear will be bogged down by people who dont understand the film or simply scream nepotism whenever Jennifer Lynch’s name comes up. head over to amazon to pick it up HERE, or on Blu-Ray HERE.

The Elephant Man – 1980

Director – David Lynch

Starring – John Hurt, Anthony Hopkins and Anne Bancroft

Slow, cruel, and beautifully filmed.  These are the main adjectives I would use to describe David Lynch’s, The Elephant Man.  Set during the Victorian era in London, The Elephant Man tells the real life story of John Merrick, a seriously deformed man led from one freak show to another.  Anthony Hopkins stars as Frederick Treves, a doctor who takes it upon himself to rescue Mr. Merrick from the actual freakshow that he is performing in, puts him up in his hospital, and attempts to teach him civilized behavior.  Treves parades Merrick around, using his notoriety to advance his own reputation, all the while claiming to help him.

When word gets around that the “Elephant Man” (called this partially due to his appearance, and partially because his mother was mauled to death by an elephant) has gained a certain popularity with the upper crust, the owner of the freakshow (Bytes) comes back to collect his “treasure”.  Treves and Bytes play a game of tug-of-war with Merrick, neither considering him or his feelings in the least.  In terms of characters, Merrick himself played with a certain amount of humanity and grace by John Hurt, is the only character who really has any redeeming characteristics.  Despite his huge prosthetic make-up appliances, Hurt manages to imbue Merrick with a certain subtlety.

On the brightside, the film looked beautiful.  Shot in silky black and white, each characters shadowy nature plays itself out visually on the backdrop of dreary, foggy London.  Each of the set pieces is crawls with life, some of it unsettling and horrible, and some of it approaching dignity.  As the movie goes on, the mood, as well as the visual tone of the film grows subtly and slowly brighter.

Of the Lynch films that I’ve seen so far, I would have to say that this is smack in the middle.  It doesn’t reach the fantastic weird heights of films like Mulholland Drive, or Blue Velvet, but it doesn’t quite fall to the un-intelligable depths of Lost Highway, or Inland Empire.  If you’ve seen any of David Lynch’s other films, you will see some similarities but he clearly grew and matured since finishing this film.  Despite, or perhaps because of this, The Elephant Man was one of his more critically successful films and has since allowed him to go on and become a unique independant voice, if only for that reason, this film deserves it’s place on the list of 1001 Movies You Should See Before You Die.

Monday morning and here we are again looking at the box scores of ND, Purdue and IU. As another sad season of college football in the state of Indiana ends, less Butler, which has enjoyed great gridiron success, fans of the Big 4 IU-Purdue-ND and Ball State look to the hallowed halls of Hoop Hysteria in need of a quick fix called success.

ND and their overhyped coach…Hi My Name is…..Charlie “I am a good person” Weis lost to another top 10 football program on Saturday evening. Memo to Lou Holtz, I know ND is still paying you, but please do not ever go on National TV and say that they will play in the BCS Championship game as long as the Michelin man is patrolling the sidelines. 

Dave Wannstedt, who has been compared to other great college coaches, Bear Bryant, Woody Hayes, Amos Alonzo Stagg….Sorry I was carried away. This same Dave was fired in Chicago and Miami as a Pro football flop. Now maybe the college game is more to his liking, however Dave is only 34-24 as the headman at Pitt. Nevertheless, how Pitt is playing is how the pundits assumed ND would play this year with the Jimmy and the man being in charge in South Bend.

Interestingly Dave and Charlie made their college debuts against one another in 2005 with ND winning big, but since that time Dave’s Pitt team has become more competitive and ND has become increasingly worse.  Pitt has gone 5-6;6-6;5-7;9-4 and currently 9-1; ND has done the opposite under CW against lesser competition going 9-3 and 10-3 with Ty Willingham’s recruits and 3-9;7-6;and 6-4 with his own superstar recruits. Enough Said!

IU….Ohhhh what a bad team….Ben Chappell, Academic All American, I am sure he is great young man and I wish him well in whatever he chooses to do I life, but as a QB, he is bad. I applaud Bill Lynch, the same Bill Lynch that lost 70-0 to KSU in 2000, for being patient with Edward Wright Baker and allowing him to stay in redshirt status so we can at least see him do some great things over the next four years.

IU’s defense, which many non-fans will lament for giving up too many big plays, has been decent for the most part, IU defense has recorded 16 interceptions that ranks in the top 10 nationally ahead #2 Alabama and #5 Cincinnati! The rank #2 nationally in total unassisted tackles, #53 in sacks and #8 nationally in turnover margin. IU again is not a strong team statistically against the pass or run but opportunistic. If you do not have Alabama or Texas talent on the defensive side of the ball then your kids have to be in a position to capitalize on the others team’s miscues AKA interceptions, fumbles!

IU’s Defense has accomplished the goal of capitalizing on the miscues and missteps of Iowa, Northwestern, Michigan, Wisconsin and Penn State. The offense on the other hand has been pathetic. Ben Chappell is terrible at red zone reads; the offensive line cannot grind it out and get a tough 2 or 3 yards when needed. Demarlo Belcher, Tandon Doss, Darius Willis, Mitchell Evans and Max Demond have been bright spots on the offensive side of the ball, but that is where it stops!

Indiana ranks #83 in Red Zone offense, while Ben has tossed 15 touchdowns he has also given up 13 interceptions.

I am calling for a change on the sidelines @ Indiana and Notre Dame. I will give a pass to Ball State and Purdue for having new coaches. Purdue has actually looked better as the season has progressed. Boiler fans, be patient with Coach Hope, I think he is the right person for the job. He beat Michigan and Ohio State in the same year.

That would be a total income of: £19,700 from an average of just two sales at just £197 each per week (allowing for two no sale weeks)

 Consider that each 21 disc set requires 20 blank DVD-R discs and 1 blank CD-Rom disc to produce and that’s a total of 2,000 blank DVD-ROMs and 100 CD-ROMs required to manufacture and fulfill the orders. 

Using a site such as www.dvdshoponline.co.uk  (for this example – there are actually even cheaper sources) the DVD’s (which enable you to print direct onto the disc) would cost you £30 per 100 discs so for 2,000 DVD’S that’s a total of £600. 

Then you’d pay £10 for each 100 printable blank CD-ROM’s thus meaning that so far its cost you £610 to manufacture 100 sets of the entire package! 

Next you will need Two Ten Way DVD cases for each set and also one single DVD case for each set, a total of 200 ten way (£25 for 50 at example site shown) and 100 single DVD cases (£10 for 100 on example site) being required. 

That’s a total cost for cases for 100 sets of the package of: £110 thus bringing our running total so far to £720. 

Next each case will need a nice colour cover printing with each set needing three covers (as there are two ten way cases and a one single case) so that’s a total of 300 sheets of photo quality paper required and as 50 sheets costs £3-00 that’s a total of £18 for paper. 

Then there is ink which when you buy your ink cartridges cheap (via ebay etc) should cost you no more than the equivalent of 10p for each cover and lets say 5p max for each full colour DVD face which you print. So with 3 covers for each set and 21 discs that’s an ink cost for each set of £1-35 and a total cost of £135 to manufacture 100 sets. 

Finally you will need 100 large Padded jiffy envelopes to use sending the packages out to your customers which bought cheaply on net will cost you around 50p each so that’s a total of £50 to send out the 100 sets. 

And finally First Class or Airmail Postage to send out each package will need to be paid for so let’s say an average of £10 per set which is £1,000 to send out the example 100 sets being discussed here. In truth to send to UK they will be little more than £5 each first class but the rest allows for International postage costs. 

Add together the total of everything stated above and it comes to a figure of:£1923.

That means that each set to manufacture and send out to your customer costs you in this example £19-23p and even in this example where we are imagining you are only retailing them at £197 a set it gives you a total profit from each sale of: OVER – £177 

So with even only 100 sales in a year (average of 2 per week for 50 weeks) and even if you were only selling them at the bare minimum retail price allowed of £197 you’d still make by selling just 100 sets a profit of: £17,777 

Assuming that you have made the intelligent decision to make your one time payment to secure your Personal Limited Edition Platinum Master Resale Legal License to this set in full and as such will be paying just £1297.00, then even after getting back your original investment in this “Worst Case Scenario Example” you stand to make a BIG PROFIT OF – £16,480. 

And as this is a “worst case scenario” lets say you decide to buy a DVD duplicator which can burn Ten copies of each disc from your master each time without the need to use your computer. Well these can be bought online for less than £400 and will save you many hours of work. 

Oh and perhaps you need to buy a new printer that can be used to both print the covers and also the “labels” directly onto the discs then one of these can be got again online for less than £200. 

Even after investing into these two pieces of equipment you’d still in this “worst case scenario” have made a PROFIT OF – £ 15,880 and of course you’d still have all of the equipment which you can continue to use for years to come without any need for additional investment. 

And that’s without running any of the Live Royle CMT Training Seminars to which you will be Legally Licensed and Entitled to also profit from and remember it’s also without selling any “Resale Rights” or “Master Platinum Resale” rights onto anyone.

It might be the least graphically impressive video game trailer we’ve ever seen, clearly by design. It might also be the first teaser for Eidos’ sequel to Kane & Lynch: Dead Men.

A sequel is certain, reported to have been in development as early as October 2007. The likely name of that sequel, Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days, puts one aspect of this teaser clip, hosted by MTV Germany’s GameOne.de, into context.

The video appears to have been shot by a Chinese restaurant’s surveillance cameras, filmed in black and white, featuring two naked men—with their unmentionables blurred out—running from gunfire. One, who appears to be Lynch, appears to have been hit by some of that gunfire, tumbles over a dining table and is attacked by a dog. The other man, possibly Kane, beats the dog away with some type of blunt object.

And that’s about it. The trailer, if it is for Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days, is certainly… interesting, if only a very, very brief taste of what we can expect in the sequel.

Judge for yourself. Does this scream viral marketing attempt at Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days? Or is someone pulling our leg?

Monday morning and I am recovering from my weekend away from football, I actually spent the weekend on the wonderful SEC campus of Vanderbilt University on a campus visit with my oldest daughter. By the way, if you can please parents, take your child to Vanderbilt for a campus information session and visit. Parents of African American and Hispanic children heed the word; give your child a great opportunity to succeed in life. The campus is an evolving exercise in cultural diversity and underwritten with subtle religious undertones.

Now back to my gripe, I get back to the state of Indiana and find that once again my mighty Hoosiers have farted away a 4^th quarter lead to the mighty Iowa Hawkeyes. For the record, I am a huge Kirk Farentz fan and love the way he prepares his kids to compete on a weekly basis. Nonetheless, as an indebt graduate of IU, I expect to win some of these games. Let us review our recent football history we play Michigan in Ann Arbor and lead in the 4^th quarter only to lose to Tate Forcier and Rich Rod. We lead against the Mighty Northwestern Wildcats (Again, I am a fan of their program and their commitment to doing things the right way) and we lose in the 4^th quarter, and of course this game against Iowa was an embarrassment to IU alums nationwide.

We cannot place this or all the losses squarely on the shoulders of Bill Lynch, although ultimately he is responsible for wins and losses. However, there is plenty of blame to share. I think Ben Chappell is marginal at best as a Big Ten QB, In two years he has yet to show me the ability to be a top 5 Big Ten QB. I refuse to buy into the crap about he was looking over his should all of last year with Kellen Lewis on the roster. Kellen was out for 60% of the season with injuries. We have a much better chance to win with Edward Wright Baker or Mitchell Evans running the option out of the Pistol Offense.

I read an article in the Indpls Star on Sunday and it indicated that off 8 IU turnovers we have mustered a meek 3 pts in the past two games! Our inability to score in the red zone against Michigan was the reason we lost the game and Ben’s inability to get us in the end zone off turnovers has placed us in a position of winning against The Badgers and the Boilers to gain bowl eligibility. With Ben Chappell under center, I have very little confidence that IU will play in a bowl game this season.

I am sick and tired and refuse to buy into the low expectations of IU football, as a fan, alum and a Hoosier, what if Eli Lilly, Hunt Construction, or Shoe Carnival had low expectations as they gave birth to their companies in the proud state of Indiana. If North Carolina and UCLA, traditional basketball powers can place an emphasis on football, why not Indiana?

Le luxe des cavernes

Trente mille ans avant notre ère, un homo sapiens particulièrement futé, qu’on appellera plus tard Cro-Magnon, invente le luxe. Pour la première fois de sa Préhistoire, l’homme fabrique un objet totalement inutile à sa survie. Nous sommes encore loin du sac Vuitton; il s’agit d’une petite statuette de pierre, aux formes vaguement féminines, sculptée grossièrement à la pointe d’un silex. Pendant ce temps, un proche cousin plutôt moche et poilu, l’Homme de Néandertal, crée le culte de la beauté. Le corps lui-même devient objet de luxe. Entre deux accouplements particulièrement féroces avec sa compagne de grotte, notre Néandertalien se pare d’éclats d’os et de bois de cervidés fraîchement dépecés.

Le coquet homo neanderthalensis finit par disparaître, laissant à son vaniteux contemporain sapiens le soin de développer seul le goût du luxe. Quelque 7500 ans avant J.-C., notre homme devient sédentaire, un nouveau mode de vie qui lui permet d’accumuler des biens matériels et d’inventer l’art de la céramique et de la métallurgie. C’est aussi à cette époque que notre ancêtre fait la découverte d’un précieux minerai qui le marquera à jamais: l’or. À sa seule vue, il devient fou, le métal brillant devenant rapidement pour lui synonyme de beauté et surtout… de pouvoir.

Le luxe antique

L’Antiquité est une époque très faste pour le luxe. L’homme y invente de nouveaux concepts (la propriété, l’esclavage, la guerre) qui lui permettent d’accumuler encore plus de richesses. À ce titre, les Égyptiens et leurs pharaons ne donnent pas leur place. Régnant sans partage sur les abords du Nil pendant plus de 3 000 ans, ils développent un goût prononcé pour l’ostentatoire. Les bijoux, qui indiquent le rang social, se déclinent en boucles d’oreilles, colliers, bagues, amulettes et plaques pectorales d’or et d’argent. Les femmes de familles aisées portent des robes à l’étoffe brodée de fils d’or et de perles, tandis que les hommes riches s’accoutrent des jupes aussi élégamment décorées (comme quoi Dubuc et son paréo n’ont rien inventé). À l’époque, les parfums sont importés, donc dispendieux et réservés à l’élite. Les effluves les plus prisées sont le lotus bleu, le lys blanc et le henné. Si les plus riches et puissants des Égyptiens vivent très bien, ils consacrent le plus clair de leur temps à préparer leur mort. Le luxe suprême des pharaons est d’ailleurs la construction de leurs sépultures titanesques: les pyramides.
Au panthéon du bling-bling, les Grecs ne sont pas en reste. Péricles, au Ve siècle avant J.-C., entreprend de faire construire les chefs-d’œuvre de l’Acropole et mandate le sculpteur Phideas pour réaliser les statues d’Athéna et de Zeus, tout en or et d’ivoire. Pendant ce temps, les citoyens les plus aisés se font construire de vastes demeures de marbre blanc. À l’intérieur, les murs sont décorés de fresques représentant les héros de l’Iliade ou les dieux de l’Olympe. Outre les vases grecs qui sont particulièrement prisés, les poteries de faïence et les plats de bronze, d’argent ou d’or trônent dans la cuisine en attendant le prochain festin grec.

Le luxe moyenâgeux

Après le pillage des trésors de l’Antiquité par les peuples barbares, l’Europe n’est que ruines. L’Église en profite et convertit peu à peu les royaumes affaiblis du Nord. C’est grâce à elle si le luxe perdure : Dieu exprime sa puissance grâce aux richesses du clergé et aux édifications des gigantesques cathédrales. Les Croisés, quant à eux, reviennent au pays chargés des merveilles de l’Orient: joyaux, soieries et épices. De nouveaux objets, très hauts de gamme pour l’époque, font leur apparition dans les châteaux: horloges, miroirs et chandelles de suif. Et malgré la culture guerrière du Moyen-Âge, l’habit des courtisans gagne en finesse. Le manteau d’hermine doublé de vair fait fureur.

Le luxe renaissant

La Renaissance est aussi renaissance du luxe. La quête du superflu nécessaire, d’après la formule que trouvera plus tard Voltaire, prend un véritable essor avec la découverte de nouveaux continents, sources de métaux rares, de pierres et de bois précieux, d’essences et d’épices exotiques, le tout transformés en autant de parures, parfums, vêtements et mobiliers fastueux. L’Italie tire particulièrement bien son épingle dorée du jeu. Au XVe siècle, la ville de Florence, gouvernée par la riche famille de Médicis, rassemble à sa cour les plus grands artistes et intellectuels de l’époque. Le mécénat se développe: luxe et art se confondent. Le Mécène entretient l’artiste par ses innombrables commandes, le plus grand privilège du noble étant de faire immortaliser son image par le portrait. . L’ornementation a elle aussi la cote. Les meubles sont sculptés et peints par de grands maîtres (dont Botticelli ne fut pas le moindre),

Le luxe hexagonal

Le luxe italien débarque en France au XVIe siècle avec le mariage d’Henri II et Catherine de Médicis. Telle une contrebandière de luxe, celle-ci introduit dans l’Hexagone art ornemental, soie brodée, tabac et parfum, ce dernier servant à masquer les odeurs corporelles particulièrement tenaces à l’époque. Mais le luxe des rois de France s’exprime d’abord à travers leurs châteaux, le plus magnifique d’entre tous étant celui construit à Versailles par Louis XIV, dit le Roi-Soleil. L’architecture même devient expression du luxe. Le palais de Versailles compte (seulement) 700 pièces, dont la somptueuse Galerie des Glaces et ses 357 miroirs. Or, tout ce luxe ne serait rien sans les nombreuses fêtes organisées par le roi pour divertir sa cour; toute la noblesse française accourt à Versailles pour assister aux pièces de théâtre et aux opéras qui y sont présentées. Le luxe est encore affaire de monarchie, ce qui n’empêchera pas plusieurs têtes couronnées de bientôt rouler dans de modestes paniers en osier.

Le luxe moderne

Malgré la montée en puissance de l’Angleterre, colonialisme et évolution industrielle obligent, Paris devient – et demeure – la capitale du luxe tout au long de la modernité. Les expositions universelles de 1879, 1889 (pour laquelle est érigée une certaine Tour d’un certain Monsieur Eiffel) et 1900, attirent la noblesse et la haute bourgeoisie du monde entier dans la Ville Lumière, permettant aux artisans du luxe français de rayonner comme jamais. Depuis longtemps, ceux-ci ont compris que les grands de ce monde préfèrent l’objet «fait main» aux reproductions en série inventée par la révolution industrielle. C’est ainsi que naîtra, dans les années 1850, le concept de haute couture avec le premier couturier, Charles Frédéric Worth. Celui-ci innove en ouvrant un premier salon de couture et en faisant porter ses créations à des mannequins vivants. Une tendance qui sera suivie de près par Poiret, autre grand nom de la mode, qui y laissera lui aussi sa griffe.

C’est également à cette époque que sont fondés la plupart des grandes maisons de luxe, dont plusieurs portent des noms qui résonnent toujours aujourd’hui. C’est le cas du parfumeur Guerlain (1828), du sellier Hermès (1837), du malletier Louis Vuitton (1854) ou encore des joailliers Cartier (1847) et Boucheron (1858). Un phénomène jusqu’alors inédit marque également la culture du luxe: le tourisme. Grâce au développement des réseaux de transports, nobles et bourgeois envahissent les ports de plaisance de la Méditerranée. Le tourisme permet l’apparition et le rayonnement de deux grands noms de l’univers du luxe: Louis Vuitton et César Ritz. Le premier a l’idée de génie de développer la maroquinerie haut de gamme (Ze fameux sac Vuitton), le second fonde le Ritz Hôtel Syndicate et ouvre son premier complexe hôtelier, place Vendôme, Paris, en 1898. Plus tard, un certain luxe «prêt-à-porter» s’incarnera dans la silhouette bien habillée, coiffée et maquillée de Coco Chanel, pour qui «le luxe n’est pas le contraire de la pauvreté mais celui de la vulgarité».

Le luxe aujourd’hui

Au milieu des années 1990, les maisons de luxe familiales et artisanales deviennent des marques regroupées aux seins de quelques grands groupes financiers, lesquels se partagent aujourd’hui plus de 70 % du marché du luxe. Ce dernier se trouve dominé par les groupes français (LVMH, Christian Dior, Hermès, Chanel), puis italiens (Prada, Armani, Bulgari, Valentino Fashion Group) ainsi que, dans une moindre mesure, américains (Estée Lauder, Ralph Lauren, Tiffany). Tout en haut du peloton, avec un chiffre d’affaires de plus de 15 milliards d’euros, le groupe Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy est sans doute le meilleur exemple du nouveau visage du luxe: multimarques et multiproduits. Des vins et spiritueux (Veuve Clicquot, Moët & Chandon, Hennessy, Dom Perignon) aux cosmétiques et parfums (Guerlain, Kenzo, Dior), en passant par la mode (Givenchy, Donna Karan, Fendi, Louis Vuitton) et les montres et la joaillerie (Tag Heuer, Zenith, Chaumet), LVMH est un empire mondial aux nombreuses ramifications. Pourtant, cette mainmise des géants du luxe n’a pas empêché que se développe à côté toute une industrie parallèle et parasite: celle de la contrefaçon. On estime que le marché du faux représente aujourd’hui 5 à 7 % du commerce mondial et que près du quart des produits de luxe vendus sur Internet seraient des imitations.

De la procession de chaussures Manolo Blahnik dans Sex and the City aux montres Rolex de Sarkozy, du «Parce que vous le valez bien» de l’Oréal aux frasques de Paris Hilton à Dubaï, le luxe est aujourd’hui apprêté et servi à toutes les sauces, vraies ou fausses. Le luxe semble ne plus être ce phénomène marginal seulement réservé à une élite fortunée: il prétend descendre de son piédestal et se démocratiser. Par l’intermédiaire de ses marques, à grands coups de publicités et de copinages avec les stars d’Hollywood, le luxe continue chaque jour d’élargir son bassin de consommateurs et de rallier plus de riches et de pauvres à sa «cause». Or, si pour beaucoup de gens, il suffit de goûter au luxe par procuration, en zieutant les magazines people et autres Paris Match, d’autres n’hésitent pas à s’endetter pour se payer du luxe. Au risque d’y perdre leur nouvelle chemise Armani…

Stealth wealth

En réaction au phénomène de démocratisation du luxe et à la culture bling-bling, une nouvelle tendance s’est développée depuis quelques années chez les ultra-riches de ce monde: le stealth wealth, ou la «richesse discrète». Une riche idée qui permet aux PDG, vedettes de cinéma et chefs d’État de dissimuler les signes ostentatoires de leur opulence aux yeux du grand public et de ne se reluquer qu’entre (riches) initiés privés. Bref, le nec plus ultra en matière de luxe serait désormais de faire comme s’il n’existait pas. Mais attention, nous sommes loin de la simplicité volontaire: les adeptes du stealth wealth préféreront par exemple à une voyante Rolex une montre Vacheron Constantin, plus discrète, disponible au coût modique d’un demi-million de dollars…

Google “The Willie Lynch Letters.”

I was introduced to the Willie Lynch Letter, and now I’m on a new level of awareness. The Willie Lynch Letter has opened my mind towards the impacts of mind control on people. I think that it applies to all people who are under it’s influence.

Reading this letter gave me insight as to how the mind works. We all share a common mind, I’ve believed this for a while. Listen to “The One Mind Theory” episode on the Escape The Matrix Radio Show.

I believe that the forms of mind control in the letter apply to all people no matter how the form varies, and I will tell you why in a moment.

I believe that if you don’t know who you are, you are subject to become what your environment tells you. This is why I think that all realities are possible. My inner self has been telling me that there is something greater within me waiting to come out. But the illusion of my outer world has been telling me otherwise. It wasn’t until I realized that my inner belief mirror my reality, that I began to see all of the illusion.

There is one mind and it is governed by the same laws. There is a reason that the richer of mind get richer and the poorer of mind get poorer. If you tell a blind man that something is red and it is blue, it will be red to him even though he has no knowledge of what red is. The “blind” comparison I used to convey a form of awareness.

If I am dependent on things for my survival, it tends to become my guidelines for my actions. If I believe that I can only do a certain thing, my mind will continue to create that reality for me. Meaning if I have control over my mind, I create the reality that I see. Hmmm….sounds like something I’ve been realizing, and then I saw The Willie Lynch Letter.

Like I said, I don’t know if the speech or letter is made up or not, but it has opened my mind and raised my awareness to human psychology. I think I have found what I want to study in school…Psychology. So you will see me back in school with the money to pay for it and graduating too.

Chapter three of Wysocki and Lynch focuses mainly on further developing a project’s argument. They ask early on that the reader continue in the reading with a project in mind.

For my digital media production, I am planning on producing a website. My argument will focus around a main entrance website and pages for an about me, resume, and eventually if I am not getting ahead of my minimal skills, examples of my work in different contexts. I have done as Wysocki and Lynch have suggested and done a mock-up design of my webpage on paper.

As they have also suggested, I kept in mind other examples of resume websites that I had seen. As a freshman, I had seen Wysocki’s own professional website, which required that the user scroll over individual fingers to access pages outside of the entrance page.

The first half of the chapter boils down to the fact that communication and creation of it is a process that requires working through and re-visitation, whether that is taking their suggestions to go to  a movie or take a walk to think and/or clear your head.

But after the design and sense of purpose is determined, it is also important to think about how the content — images, titles, and word choices will define the way your argument is viewed. More importantly, it is important to consider audience, context, and statement of purpose — the way the audience will perceive your communication, color choices, and the information that you are displaying (how things are ordered in the resume, etc.). I have decided the context of the presentation to be a website and to appear professional because my dual purpose is to develop my web skills, while having a reference for employees as I continue my job search (use as a self-marketing tool).

Can you watch a movie on an iPhone and obtain it’s full effect? Filmmaker David Lynch shares his opinion:

La rumeur courait depuis quelques temps à propos d’une adaptation filmique du jeu vidéo Kane & Lynch. Il y a quelques jours, le producteur américain Adrian Askarieh s’est confié au magazine online Gamedaily.com. Verdict : le tournage aura bien lieu sous la direction du cascadeur Simon Crane et est prévu pour le mois de mars 2010. Mieux que ça, il confirme avoir trouvé son Adam ‘Kane’ Marcus en la personne de Bruce Willis qui a accepté. Banco !

Kane & Lynch est un jeu vidéo très violent réunissant Kane, un mercenaire aguerri, et Lynch, un psychopathe imprévisible. Rescapé d’une mission au Vénézuela, Kane fut le seul survivant du groupe des “7″ auquel il s’était rattaché. Du moins c’est ce qu’il crû… En fuite avec le magot, il  découvre rapidement que tous les membres ne sont pas morts et qu’ils comptent se venger de sa traîtrise. Condamné à mort à la fois par ses ennemis et par les “7″, il s’échappe de prison aux côtés de James Seth Lynch, un psychopathe qui a assassiné sa femme et est commandité par les “7″ pour s’assurer que Kane rende le butin. Alors qu’ils se vouent une haine viscérale, les deux hommes vont finalement s’allier pour sauver la famille de Kane prise en otage et se venger des “7″.

Le tournage du film se déroulera en Amérique du Sud et en Europe, et le casting reste toujours ouvert pour trouver le parfait Lynch.

So after reviewing some situations where a turnaround was threatened by tough issues that were not completely on management’s control, we now move to situations where the core business is healthy but the performance has been compromised by solvable issues. This is usually the result of bad luck (it sometimes happens), internal issues brought upon themselves by incompetent leadership or by management’s inability to rise to a solvable new challenge.

What is the point of having a blog and end discussing examples with a strong consensus. Instead I am going to propose a controversial case: Premier Exhibitions (PRXI). You probably never heard that name before but you probably heard the names of its two exhibitions: Titanic and Bodies. Both are hit shows not only in the US but around the world and both continue to attract crowds. Bodies shows cadavers treated with a technical process that makes them viable for exhibition and Titanic shows pieces recovered from the wreckage. Someone appropriately used the adjective macabre to describe the situation however that is not necessarily bad. As Peter Lynch once wrote

Something that makes people shrug, or turn away in disgust is ideal – One Up on Wall Street

If you agree with that statement then Premier may be your kind of stock. This is a company well known for value investors since Mark Sellers, a respected hedge fund manager, is its majority shareholder. There are several articles on Premier’s good economics and the potential value of its Titanic assets so I am just going to make the introductions. Dear reader, here is Premier Exhibitions:

Most of these articles were written before Premier hit an earnings bump. That bump’s cause, consequence, solution and opportunity are going to be the topic of several posts, but as an appetizer let me show you the historic stock price:

Wow, that is what I call a rise and fall. You just have to go through Yahoo’s board to retrace the story and is really something. You can read how early adopters bought the story of the unrecognized Titanic assets, were joined later by growth investors that valued the successful new Bodies exhibition, how pricing got out of hand with momentum investors pumping pie-in-the-sky projections and the sudden collapse. Now it had gone full circle becoming a value stock again: I recommend you to check the Complete Growth Investor podcast on Premier and get their free report. This is indeed the story of an Icarus growth stock.

The collapse has wrongly been attributed to the 20/20’s attempt on character assassination of Bodies –that I still recommend to watch, also here is Premier’s response - and the settled investigation of the bodies’ origin. To the contrary, both were short term attendance busts because as we know there is no such thing as bad publicity.

The reason for the collapse was simpler: an outsized and undisciplined organization built by an entrepreneurial one man rule seeking growth on too many fronts without the needed processes to manage that growth. This is a story repeated time and again that has been the subject of some best sellers like “Inside the Tornado” and “Build to Last”. I do not offer these books necessarily as testaments of good research but as witnesses of the topicality of the challenge.

All investing is risky and growth stocks have their particular set of challenges. Their stocks multiples can collapse fast when earnings or growth disappoints. And the probability of disappointing is higher than people think: these are some Bain and Co. estimates of success for growth initiatives

If this is not material for a good series, I do not know what is. It certainly has drama. In the next part we are going to address the story of Premier’s collapse and discuss if it is solvable.
