Vognhallen i mørketid!

En gammel vognhall og noen lyslenker gjør bygget ekstra spennende i mørketiden. SE FLERE BILDER!

Vognhallen som står på Os har de siste årene blitt rustet opp av Os kulturutvikling. Hallen har fått nytt tak og veggene ble fjernet for å få frem de flotte trekonstruksjonene.

Vognhallen har de to siste årene fungert som konsertsted for Osøren Blues og Jazzfestival og var i sommer også basen for skulptursymposiet i Os.

The best little yarn shop in Leeds just got better:

Ace designer Ysolda Teague opened the new workshop room at BaaRamEwe in Headingley last Thursday, and signed copies of the marvellous Whimsical Little Knits 2. (Pandop, is it Christmas yet? What about now? Or now?)

See here for further photos, including a couple of the many Ishbels worn or brought along to the event (I counted at least 7), and evidence suggesting that it isn’t possible to take an unflattering photo of Ysolda, but it is definitely possible to take a very bad picture of me, particularly when I’m pulling a funny face, sipping wine and trying on a marigold yellow hat (the one seen in the background of the picture above). Oh well.

While my blog has been shockingly neglected of late, there may be some new entries coming up soon – I have no less than 4 designs in progress, of which 2 are almost ready to publish. And 1 of them isn’t even for socks! Also, in a case of necessity being the mother of invention, I’ve worked out a way to do a provisional (crochet) cast on with no crochet hook, just hands and a knitting needle. So that will be blogged as soon as I find a way to take a photo of my own hands.

I’ve been a regular customer of a local yarn store called Sip & Knit for almost a year. Recently, I had the opportunity to sit down with the store’s spirited owner, Doni Young, and it was then I gained a real appreciation for not only the evolution of a shop as wonderful as hers, but also for her as a woman of strength and vision.

Doni has been knitting since she was a small child and during summer holidays, she would spend time with her family at a summer cottage where she would ski all day and knit well into the night. After graduating Rollins College and working in recreation at the Walt Disney World Resort, she moved into advertising and eventually settled into the insurance claim industry. Over the course of 25 years, she worked her way up through the ranks to the role of Vice President.

Work would take her on the road quite a bit, and as she traveled, she would seek out local yarn stores as a respite from the harried life of a corporate executive. She looked for a place where she could hang out, meet other knitters, and escape the stresses of life. ”I’m not domestic,” Doni admits, “but I would take my knitting everywhere.” Through divorce, surviving cancer, and a challenging career, she continued to follow her passion and acknowledges that amidst life’s trials, “knitting saved me.”

As she visited a variety of yarn stores, she rarely if ever found what she was looking for – a comfortable place to sit and stay a while, a place to have a cup of coffee and to knit. She also thought that yarn stores needed to be open in the evening and on weekends so people with a regular business work schedule could have the “clean, well-lighted place” Hemingway wrote of decades ago.

It was 3 years before Sip & Knit actually opened that Doni’s original vision for the store emerged while on a road trip with her brother and closest confidante, Cy Young. Cy listened intently as Doni outlined her idea of a yarn store with lots of open work space, a coffee bar, and a wide variety of beautiful yarns. He encouraged her, but it would take a few more years and another bout with cancer before she decided to take early retirement and bring her dream to life.

She feels very fortunate to have family and dear friends who worked tirelessly to help her open up Sip & Knit in its first location in Winter Park, Florida. Doni hosted the grand opening party of her yarn store on the eve of her 50th birthday. It hasn’t always been easy – but her devotion to her craft and her commitment to her customers has made Doni a success.

With all of her responsibilities of running Sip & Knit, I wondered when she finds time to pursue her craft. ”I don’t sleep much – but can find myself knitting late into the night.” Doni also enjoys the creative process that knitting gives her. ”I love experimenting with different needle sizes, yarns, stitches, patterns, and the other tools we have at our disposal.” And, she gave me a friendly reminder about experimenting: “If you’re going to experiment, you have to be willing to rip things out.”

“Running a yarn store has been a great learning. It’s helped me hone my craft, and I’ve learned so much about fibers,” Doni said. In addition to her creative passion, she also acknowledged that her business background has helped her tremendously.

If you let a couple of weeks lapse between visits to Sip & Knit, you will always see something different. Doni continues to change things around, keep her displays fresh, provides unique and interesting classes (taught by the fantastic and fabulous Barbara Pfister Fusi) and offers special promotions and events.

Besides the yarn, Sip & Knit really does provide all that Doni’s original vision imagined… a comfortable place where anyone feels like they are among friends, where they can escape the outside world, have a delicious cup of coffee, and sit with their needles and yarn, where they can talk as much or as little as they like, where they can feel at home.

As Sip & Knit celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, Doni continues to have ideas about how to expand and evolve her work, about how to take yarn and knitting to the streets and make the craft accessible to the masses. Doni Young is a hard working woman who has made her dream come true. ”There isn’t a day I don’t love to come to work.” She’s an inspiring example of what a dream coupled with hard work can bring to life.

Next Best Thing to Pajama Jam!

This lucky blogger was one of only 40 knitters who got to attend a retreat last weekend with the amazing Yarn Harlot and Depraved Dyer in Port Ludlow WA!

Stephanie & Tina keep knitters in stitches!

It was the most fun I’ve had since Pajama Jam – which happens again TONIGHT! (See you at LambShoppe from 5 pm to midnight!)

I learned at ton at Port Ludlow – new way to knit more efficiently! hand painting 6 skeins of rockin’ Blue Moon Fiber Arts yarn! baby steps into spinning! I’m still absorbing it all – and will blog more about it in the next week.

But first – we have some REALLY EXCITING events and classes coming up at Lamb Shoppe!

Noni Happy Stripe Oven Mitts class Nov. 23 & 30, Mondays, at 1-2 with Mary Carol. These make terrific gifts and will provide an opportunity to learn a few techniques that might be new to advanced beginner and even some intermediate knitters.

Meanwhile, I owe y’all an apology. I’ve been neglecting this blog for far too long – taken by wanderlust and then by trying to catch up with responsibilities that suffered while wandering. I’ll try to make it up to you by blogging 3x/week, every week. Now, who’s taking bets whether I can keep to it or not?

Finally – I heard so many knitters at the retreat complaining about “cold”, “unfriendly” and even “mean” LYS (local yarn shops)… I felt extrememly fortunate to have found Lamb Shoppe – where not only the staff but other knitters are friendly and helpful, and where I can settle in and knit awhile with a fresh made latte, too!!!

Akkurat nå ligger den nye duken min under, og på toppen finner vi et blomsterlys fra Rema1000, mini-såpebobler fra England, lykke chippen min, “Edge by Eve” slips med polkadotter og en liten huladame jeg fikk med moren til en spansk venninde.

In his City and the Stars, Arthur C. Clark describes Diaspar, a civilisation living an idyllic life within an enormous mountain, complete with artificial reincarnation using computer memory at the end of each 1,000 year life. This world is preserved by a combination of an innate fear of going outside and a super computer system which controls all aspects of the environment without any system management. Life would continue in this environment, seemingly for eternity, but for one Alvin, the first person born, not reincarnated, for millennia, who lacks the fear of the outside and whose venturing outside leads to contact with Lys, a very different civilisation and which, in turn, brings their cocooned existence to an end.

Comparable themes can be found in other works of sci-fi. At least one episode of Star Trek had the crew of the good ship Enterprise arriving on a small planet-sized space ship inhabited by a human civilization who had also been living an idyllic life for thousands, perhaps millions of years. Life was controlled, as in Diaspar, by a fabulous computer system, but the difference being that the space ship’s inhabitants, having been inculcated with the belief that their world was controlled by a divinity and attempting to gain access to it was sacrilegious, were unaware of the computer’s existence. Unfortunately, the space ship, due to a programming error (was it stardate 20,000 compliant?) was on a collision course with a real planet. Of course the Enterprise crew, in this episode lead by the multi-talented Dr. McCoy, diagnosed and correct the problem.

Switch from fiction to fact. Although the computer systems we use don’t control the environment of planet earth, many do provide the backbone of the organisations that use them. Most people who use these computer systems know they are using computer systems and few, if any, of them produce outcomes anywhere close to idyllic, vendor claims notwithstanding.

Nonetheless, there are many sites where a system, whether central or peripheral to an organisation’s business, gradually becomes shrouded in mystery. The source code is held by an outsourced development company that goes broke or is acquired one or more times and eventually is lost. Or documentation is not maintained and it too is eventually lost. Staff move on and enhancements and reconfigurations become problematic. Interfacing with new systems becomes particularly difficult. It isn’t the boilerplate documentation that really matters here, it’s the documentation of business rules and processes that the system embodies. And, as with the frog which, if dropped into boiling water will leap out but if placed in water that is gradually brought to a boil doesn’t notice the change and is boiled to death, it is more likely to happen with systems managing processes that are changed slowly.

The system gradually becomes hidden behind a black wall.

Although with most businesses allowing a black wall to hide some or other IT system will not lead to disaster even vaguely similar to the sci-fi examples cited above, there are risks. An otherwise perfectly adequate system may be deactivated because a minor but necessary configuration change is unable to be made or a new system may be procured and implemented to effect changes that could have been made to the existing system, if only someone knew how. An organisation might even buy new licences for software it already owns!

Without the intervention of a Dr. McCoy and his co-crew, the more a computer system becomes hidden behind a black wall, the greater the risk to the business concerned.

Ja no er mørketiden over oss.. Og jeg kjenner det godt på kroppen. Går når det er mørkt, kommer hjem når det er mørkt. Eneste gangene jeg er ute i dagslys er når jeg tar meg kjappe røyk på jobb..

Slik ser det ut når jeg kommer hjem fra jobb (hvis jeg er heldig å rekke første buss)

Jeg blir utrolig slapp og lei av vinteren. Men det er no deilig å tenke at det bare er fordi man ikke får noe lys man er lei seg og sliten. Og man kan gjøre noe med det. Feks har Body Shop en serie med aromaterapi produkter.

Jeg bruker Total Energi i dusjen om morningen og merker stor forkjell de gangene jeg IKKE bruker den fra de gangene jeg smører meg godt inn med den velduftende peeling såpen. Man får et lite ekstra kick i rompen lissom;) Også den lille sprayteflasken som man skal smøre på tynn hud (feks pulsårer, hals og armvrist). Her merker man også at man får litt mer liv i seg. Deep Sleep sprayflasken er god hvis man ikke får sove. Spray på puten og man sovner fort. Også har den en deilig forfriskende duft!

Ellers på jobb har jeg begynt å drikke energidrikker, type burn og slikt. I tillegg til masse kaffe.. Det holder meg no oppe til jeg kommer hjem:)

Men jeg ønsker meg en Philip EnergiLight! Den simulerer dagslys og energinivået i kroppen blir høyere. men den er jo litt dyr da så jeg ender vel opp i et solarium istede;)

This weekend. Big game against Michigan this weekend. Get pumped. We have to win this one in order to get into the playoffs.
