RE: Your mental stability

I hope this is just a hilarious joke and that on April 1st next year when I wake up to get my morning coffee and daily online reads, there your face will be with a big smile giving the world the always reassuring finger guns as if to say “I fooled you all, you big bunch of foolio’s!” and oh how we will laugh and in 2020 we will look back on it and say “remember how you got us good 10 years ago?”

What are the chances of that happening? Can we ever get back to the status quo? Don’t answer these questions for I do not want to know.

You’re a darn good actor sir. You’ve been in a few masterpieces such as Return to Paradise and Murder, She Wrote, and some not so good productions like the Village (although you are not to blame for this as M. Night “I Think I’m The Man” Shyamalan is an overrated ass and doesn’t realise he hasn’t produced a quality film since Unbreakable).

Are you pissed that you didn’t win an Oscar for Walk the Line, is that what prompted this sudden lifestyle change? Because you should know that I was rooting for you. I mean Philip S. Hoffman, good bloke, but come on he was in Patch Adams! I am a true believer in holding films against award winners. That way we could be guaranteed that David Caruso and Elizabeth Berkley would never win an Oscar – I know they already have a very slim chance, but a chance nonetheless!

Now I’ve heard you “rap” and I’m not going to be one of those “haters” that make ill-informed decisions before being presented with the entire story nor am I going to pass judgment on the lives of others. Having said that you’re slightly shit. I know I said I wasn’t going to say that but I lied. You’re so shit that I would rather listen to that white guy in 5ive freestyle before I have to endure another listen of what you’re bringing to the table. Take it back and get a refund. Do not put all your eggs into this rapping basket, because you will need a fallback. If asked to do ‘Gladiator 2: Attack of the Zombies’ I say take it.

I will treat this as an open letter as I believe Joaquin would regularly Google the terms “Shyamalan”, “Overrated” and “Philip Seymour Hoffman is a tampon”. This post should be right up there in the searches.

Oh sure, these days, vampires are just downright cuddly, thanks in part to the popularity of the “Twilight” series and other modern vampire tales. Yes, today’s bloodsuckers, with their roguish good looks and vegetarian attitudes, are pansies compared to their predecessors.

All around the world, there is folklore and myths surroundings vampires, each one different, and, in many cases, each one more horrible than the next (don’t even get me started on Japan’s kappa). Forget sparkling skin and an attraction to humans beyond that night’s dinner. Most vampire legends are scary enough to even make Edward and his sexy bed-head coif tremble.

According to an article in the American Chronicle, vampire-like spirits and beings have been recorded ever since mankind has been around. For instance, even the Sumerians, the earliest known civilization in the world, believed in the Akhkharu, a blood-sucking demon. The ancient Chinese wrote about hopping corpses, which would consume people’s chi (or life essence) and the ancient Egyptians had a goddess Sakhmet, who was consumed with, you guessed it, bloodlust.

In Malaysia, their version of the vampire is the penanggalan, a flying woman’s head complete with, no, not a smoking-

hot body, but rather hanging entrails, according to an article in the online magazine The Traveler’s Notebook. Formerly a beautiful midwife, the penanggalan made a pact with the devil for supernatural abilities, and all she got for her effort was this lousy T-shirt. Oh, and a curse in which she had to detach from her body each night in search of the blood of newborn infants and pregnant women. As an added bonus, the intestines hanging out of the creature also left constant sores on whomever it grasps.

In Brazil, forget about Brad Pitt hanging out in your bedroom waiting to suck you dry. They have the lobishomen, a hairy and squat fellow with a hunched back, jaundiced skin and rotted teeth, according to the magazine article. However, in a M. Night Shyamalan twist, the lobishomen loves to prey on women, who then turn into nymphomaniacs after his bite (I’m sincerely hoping their lust did not include the lobishomen … talk about a walk of shame).

In Australia, the indigenous people have a legend of the yara-ma-yha-who, which fed on humans and then … wait for it … regurgitated them, according to mythology writer Wayne Kreger in his article “Vampires Around the World.” Luckily (not), the victim usually survived. However, enough encounters with the creature would eventually slowly turn the victim into a yara-ma-yha-who.

In some of the older Slavic gypsy communities, it was thought that inanimate objects and animals could turn into vampires. So, just think about that the next time you start slicing a watermelon.

Baobhan Sith

Africa has the Obayifo, a tree-dwelling, child-eating vampire.

Bulgaria has the Vapir or Ubour, which rises after 40 days in the grave to feed on blood and … (shudder) … excrement. Apparently it only has one nostril and sleeps with its left eye open.

In China, there is the Chiang-shi, a white or green-haired vampire that drew strength from the moon and could fly.

Russia has the Upyr, a delightful daywalking bloodsucker that loved children … for dinner. Oh, and it also ate those children with its iron teeth.

Those wacky Scottish lads had the Baobhan Sith, also known as the white women of the Scottish highlands. They were ghost-like vampires that could take the shape of beautiful women that invited men to dance with them and then drank their blood, because, you know, sometimes sith happens.

É difícil encontrar um tema mais batido no mundo cinematográfico que esse que dá título (em português) a esse filme. Fim dos Tempos não é mais um, pois se você assistir verá que não tem nada do que diz o título nacional mal adaptado. Se o título conota uma catástrofe mundial como acontece em Armageddon ou O Dia Depois de Amanhã, nada disso é confirmado no enredo da história. Podendo ter sido muito mais louvável e até mais chamativo uma tradução literal, O Acontecimento. Essas adaptações de títulos as vezes é algo lastimável e muda completamente o sentido original da obra, seja ela qual for.

Escrito e dirigido pelo indiano M. Night Shyamalan, que também dirige o live action do desenho animado Avatar – The Last Airbender (o filme recebe o mesmo título), que tem estréia prevista para o verão de 2010, e outros já conhecidos como A Vila, A Dama na Água e O Sexto Sentido. No elenco temos Mark Wahlberg, Zooey Deschanel (que atuou em Sim, Senhor! Ao lado de Jim Carrey), John Leguizamo e Ashlyn Sanchez.

Os fatos que acontecem no filme são um mistério. De repente começam a acontecer coisas estranhas, mais precisamente o comportamento das pessoas começa a ficar estranho, mas o anormal aqui é que esse comportamento estranho e assassino não é contra os outros, mas contra si mesmos. Várias hipóteses e justificativas aparecem para explicar o fenômeno, alguns dizem ser uma reação vingativa das plantas, que agindo contra a ação destrutiva do homem, produzem toxinas que geram esse comportamento. Outros dizem ser uma arma secreta do governo sendo testada.

Até as certezas são questionadas, e quando se pensa ter chegado a solução do mistério é ai que ele começa, como é o caso da idéia sugerida pelo personagem Elliot Moore (Mark Wahlberg) que afirma a manifestação apenas quando há atividades em grupos, mas logo isso é descartado quando há ataques isolados, e é nessa tentativa de explicar o inexplicável que se passam todos os … minutos. Ficção-científica é um tema extremista, geralmente só atrai os fãs do gênero, ou aficionados religiosos que usam esse tipo de filme como argumento para justificar suas crenças.

Mas há também (seguindo a idéia do ataque das plantas) um debate ecológico, essa de vingança homem-natureza. O diretor é conhecido pela fama que tem de dá uma há fabular em suas obras. Nesse poderia facilmente ser inserido a moral “Os homens dominam a natureza para destruir-la; Uma hora (no filme) a natureza dominará o homem, também para destruir-lo.” (moral meramente interpretativa e sem confirmação da intenção dos autores). O filme não é uma obra-prima, e nem é o tipo de filme que faz você querer ver de novo, mas pode ser que alguém goste, afinal há gosto pra tudo.

M. Night Shyamalan despontou como renovador do gênero de suspense. Não há como não ver a influência dele nos roteiros de muitos filmes do gênero atual e recentemente e em séries da televisão. Em muito do que se faz em matéria de suspense fazendo do mundo sobrenatural o destino das pessoas incrédulas. Mas FIM DOS TEMPOS ou THE HAPPENING indica o esgotamento das idéias surpreendentes do diretor indiano. Apesar do filme novamente esbarrar na fronteira de novos níveis do horror.

Some people have long, complicated names. Like Ben Roethlisberger. Or M Night Shyamalan. I’ll even throw Weird Al Yankovic in that category. But just because a name is short, that doesn’t mean it’s not complicated. My name, in theory, is very simple. Especially when it’s written down.

But when it’s simply spoken, especially over the phone, to someone who has never heard my name before, they usually don’t get it right on the first try. Some popular variations include, but are not limited to the following, in all possible combinations:

Because when all a person has to go on is what they simply hear, they are working with a muddled form that sounds literally like this: “Nicgtkahshelahw”.

I remember how fascinated I was when someone pointed out to me about ten years ago that often, when we say a word, we don’t correctly pronounce it, because we can get by without doing it clearly. When we say “cat”, we pronounce it “caaa”. We leave off the “t”. I had to practice a few times at first. Then I realized it’s true.

But if we are sure to emphasize the “t”, the word “cat” literally sounds more like this: “cattuh”. We tend not to hear the extra syllables we add on to the end of words. And we make a habit of leaving off the strong consonant sounds on the ends also, as previously mentioned.

I wonder, too, what mental image my last name gives people. Personally, I’ve always envisioned a turtle shell, hence the picture of a turtle at the top of this site. But people usually tell me they think of “a seashell at the ocean”. When in truth, “schel” is simply the German word for “loud and noisy”, which over time evolved into “Shell”. It would be nice to imagine my ancestors were a bunch of cool hippies hanging out at the beach. But in reality, not so much.

Secretly, some sort of picture pops up in my head for everyone I know- as soon as I hear their last name. I’m taking requests, actually. For those who send me a request on facebook I will reveal my mental image for their name.

I expect no one to actually do that, though. That would be like getting sucked into the TV screen.  It’s what we in the theatre world call “breaking the 4th wall”.

M. Night Shyamalan movies recently just make me wanna...

Drink every time someone gruesomely (or not so gruesomely) kills themselves.
Drink whenever Alma emotionally bitch-slaps Elliot.
Drink every time someone asks what’s going on or why it’s happening.

Opinión:

Ea, ea, ea, el planeta se cabrea. Así que decide librarse de ese molesto sarpullido que le ha salido en la superficie llamado humanidad. ¿Como? Haciendo que la peña imite a Socrates (El filosofo, no el futbolista) Bajo esta interesante premisa, M. Night Shyamalan nos ofrece un filme de suspense burdamente construido y que no alcanza la tensión de otros largometrajes del realizador indio, que parece quedarse a medias aguas a la hora de decidirse si hacer un film mas comercial o una obra de las suyas, y prosigue su imparable cuesta abajo tras esas dos joyitas llamadas “El sexto sentido” y “El protegido”.

Huyendo de lo invisible

El problema es que uno no se mete en la acción en ningún momento, y por momentos la película es aburrida y tediosa, importándote un huevo la suerte de los personajes. Que esa es otra. No te crees jamas la historia de amor entre “Cara de palo” Wahlberg y esa pedazo de actriz con los ojos mas bonitos del panorama actual llamada Zooey Deschanel. Y para mas inri ni siquiera contamos con el habitual giro final de las películas del director indio, cerrándose esta tal y como empezó.

Resignación ante lo inevitable

Si la película quería ser una alegoría sobre el daño que le estamos haciendo al medio ambiente y al planeta, francamente, me quedo con Al Gore.

Ousar abandonar esta Vila é cada vez mais uma tarefa que reluz no desejo de um novo horizonte, mas são cada vez mais, e menos visíveis os medos que se encerram lá fora. Mas é preciso. É vital. Por muito que custe avançar, o medo é o mais fiel e leal companheiro que temos nestas alturas, fazendo-mos avançar, forçando a acreditar em nós mesmos.

Y hago este post porque he visto que muchos, igual que yo, la confunden con la película Avatar, de James Cameron, que saldrá este diciembre. La confusión del nombre es debido a que James Cameron le ganó el título de la película a Night Shyamalan. Ambas tienen temáticas diferentes; sin embargo, por la que yo haría cola en el cine con mucha ansia es The Last Airbender porque he sido seguidor de la serie animada y espero una buena película por parte del director que cuenta con trabajos memorables.

How’s it going out there, peeps? Today it’s bright and sunny here in Dundee, which is most unusual. But enough with the tedious formalities! Here’s part 6 of my notes from the writersroom seminar…

SURPRISE

When you are writing a screenplay, you want to write something that is fresh and original, but there are only a finite number of basic plots that you can work with (I’m going to do a blog on these basic plots later too) so you need to know what’s different about your version. What unique perspective are you bringing to the story? What’s your original touch? How are you going to surprise the audience?

When you watch a movie, or read a great story, there should be a sense that the ending was totally inevitable, but at the same time unpredictable. What I mean by this, is that, once the dust clears, you should be able to look back and see that it was obvious the story would end like this. Everything should “add up”.

A good example of this would be the movie “The Sixth Sense”, by M. Night Shyamalan. The story is about a child psychiatrist (Bruce Willis) who is working with a young boy that claims he can see ghosts.

If you haven’t watched it, don’t read any more as there is about to be a terrible spoiler…

…at the end of the movie, it’s revealed that Bruce Willis’ character (the main character throughout the film) is actually a ghost. This is a great plot twist in the movie, as, when you look back over the film, you can see that it really was quite obvious, but not (to my mind anyway) predictable. Now, not all stories need to end with such a mind-blowing twist to be a success, but they do need to come to a satisfactory resolution that has been built up over the course of the plot. Many movies start off strong, but lose it at the ending. This is usually because the writer simply hasn’t done enough to suggest this kind of conclusion to their story.

An example of a movie that (in my opinion) utterly fails in this principle, is the film, “Vanilla Sky”.

Don’t be fooled by the great trailer. This movie uses the technique that children are taught never to use in writing class, the “and then I woke up” lazy-ass ending. The writer has created all these confusing yet interesting situations/circumstances and twists in the plot, but then, instead of rewarding the faithful viewer with a great resolution that explains everything, they cop out by saying it was all a dream. Awful stuff.

So, that’s all for this section. Many of you may disagree with my thoughts on “The Sixth Sense” and “Vanilla Sky” (as there is potentially some case to be made in suggesting that Vanilla Sky does, in fact, point towards its ending), but hopefully you can see the principle behind what I mean anyway.

Comme j’adore le mois d’Octobre, l’Halloween et les films d’horreur, j’ai décidé de faire le premier Horreur-o-thon des Bipolaires! En effet, j’écouterai un film de peur par jour jusqu’au 31, alors revenez lire mes critiques quotidiennes…si vous en avez le courage! MOUAHAHAHAAA!

Parfois, il m’arrive de vouloir donner une deuxième chance à certains films, comme dans le cas d’Alien Resurrection, que j’ai trouvé meilleur la 2e fois.  Par contre, j’avais aussi donné une deuxième chance à Dreamcatcher, et c’était encore PIRE la 2e fois (des étrons-aliens? WTF?).  Alors, qu’est-ce que j’ai pensé de The Village de M. Night Shyamalan, que je n’avais vu qu’en 2004 lors de sa sortie et que j’ai réécouté hier?Tout d’abord, il ne faut pas voir The Village comme un film d’horreur, sinon vous serez déçus comme tout le monde l’a été lors de sa sortie.  En effet, il s’agit plutôt d’un thriller psychologique avec des éléments surnaturels (à première vue).

Dans une communauté paisible des années 1800, une trève entre les habitants du village et des monstres mystérieux vivant dans les bois l’entourant commence à se faire difficile, à cause du curieux Lucius Hunt (Joaquin Phoenix) qui s’y avanture malgré les ordres.  L’atmosphère de vieille légende Américaine présentée par Mr. Shyalaman  Shyamalaman Night fonctionne à merveille, avec un éclairage aux chandelles inquiétant et des forêts menaçants. Par contre, les personnages sont plutôt ennuyants (bien qu’incarnés de façon idéale par les acteurs) et le film avance très trop lentement.

De plus, bien que  ne peut résister à mettre un twist à la fin de tous ses films avec différents degrés de succès, cette fois, il réussit plus ou moins à surprendre le spectateur.  Mais, sa force est de proposer un aspect psychologique sur lequel le public peut se pencher après le visionnement.  Vous verrez.

El director M. Night Shyamalan vuelve al cine, pero ahora desde otra perspectiva. El cineasta es el escritor de la historia Devil, que estará siendo llevada a la pantalla próximamente por los hermanos Dowle. La misma nos narra com un grupo de personas quedan atrapadas dentro de un elevador, y uno de ellos será nada menos que Satanás. No es la primera vez que se lleva a la pantalla una historia original de él, lo que es inusual es que no la dirija. Logan Marshall-Green, Jenny O’Hara, Jacob Vargas, Matt Craven, Bojana Novakovic, Bokeem Woodbine, Geoffrey Arend and Caroline Dhavernas have joined the cast of the supernatural thriller “Devil” for says The Hollywood Reporter.

M. Night Shyamalan penned the story, about a group of people trapped in an elevator and one is the Devil.
