My friend Jesal from Project 808 and I had a chance to get together and get some filming done finally. Project 808 is THE definitive source for all your aftermarket exhaust needs. I’ll definitely be picking up some goods from these guys when spring rolls around…especially after chatting it up with Jesal during our shoot. Anyway, we’ve been trying to get together for some time some Unscene Media could put its spin on the ever-so typical car (exhaust) videos.

Thankfully, Jesal was open-minded enough to let me do my thing and do things differently from the norm. Check out part 1 below and let me know what you think!

Como todos los años, “Car and Driver” ha elegido los mejores coches de 2010. Los candidatos han sido coches nuevos o modificados, que saliesen al mercado no más tarde de enero de 2010 y que su precio no superase los 80.000 $.

Mary writes:

Finally! VIR!
I have heard so much about this- we are staying above the garages; I think this is so cool!

Alan and Sally invite us to dinner with on Friday and we meet more of the instructors- more Porsche people!

Day 1- Alan has been my instructor multiple times now- I have requested him for this event- so I feel very comfortable from the start. Again- I have memorized the track (turns) from iRacing. I truly appreciate that it is what it is- a video- and only useful for learning the turns but understand the being on the track is completely different!

Alan’s patience and calmness is as always-perfect! Yes- I am messing up on certain turns; doing better on others. I listen closely to his direction but still can’t seem to get turn 3- struggle over and over on this one. Hitting the snake when I am timid at first, realize that I can take it with much more power as he convinces me and then under the bridge and up through the S’s….on to turn 10! Now I am much more confident!

Not perfect with the Oak Tree but up the straight away- he keeps me on the gas….on the gas….wait..

Stay strong on the left, sharp right-strong-quick left- still on the gas, track out- quick mini tap- down into the hog’s pen (or as I call it the pig’s pen)- no breaking out right, on the gas….and out on the straight away! I can’t swear that is the way he described it but that is what I was doing! Ha!

Day 2-I looked at my data and Kyle’s- I know that I am losing time from 1 through 4. I hit all of this much better with Alan in the car- then out for the last time when I am solo…I got sloppy- I was trying too hard to beat the time- big mistake- I had 2 tires off a couple of times- scared myself!

Let Jamie in the other M and the Lotus pass me- tried to stay close though!
It was very cool that I was able to race around with the Lotus Elise most of the weekend having fun with passing each other/ challenging each other! My best time here was 2:24 flat! Not too shabby for my 15th day ever and 1st event at VIR…?

I can say that I walked away from this weekend as my last for the season feeling fulfilled!! And look forward to next season- hopefully I will meet more people during these events and make more friends!!

Brian Hair is my instructor-Alan Herod sent him a message ahead of time for what he should work on with me. (Alan is awesone-super cool that he looks out for me like that!)
This is the following weekend after my great time at Summit Main.

Kyle and I are in the same group- Blue- he has Eric Wong. Seems that the challenge is on even before it starts. We don’t line up together and don’t see each other on the track. We review our data after the first day and realize that we were consistently on the opposite side of the track the entire time (going close to the same speed). This is good news- must mean that I am doing ok if he hasn’t caught up.

This event is much more crowded and I am frustrated by being stuck behind other cars. I know that I should use this time for learning other stuff but still want to maximize my own speed and skills

Day 2- Brian keeps telling more and more that I need to work on my posture-stop invading his space as I am sliding and leaning too much around the turns. I make a conscious note but it is very hard to control this with my maximum speed (ha!). But true!

Kyle gets solo’d…takes off for the last round- waiting for Brian….I’m not going to be happy about this if he doesn’t give me the option, and then…finally!! I get to go solo too! I finish the weekend finally feeling like I accomplished something that I set out for! I am very comfortable on this track-feel great at pushing my car and working the slide around turns (the butt dance as I call it) as necessary and going full throttle(for me) everywhere that I can!

Overall, I liked the nature of the event, but would prefer not to be in a group this crowded again at a different speed.

I am looking forward to next season on Main!

—Kyle speaks
FAVORITE INSTRUCTOR WEEKEND PHRASE: “Enough brake, GO GO GO!“

Looked at my pads after the PCA event, thought I was going to have enough pad for this weekend (3 days), but the brake pad wear sensor came on during the last lap of my session on Friday, the rear pads were done. A quick call to OGRacing and I was able to get Brian Hair (Mary’s instructor who works at OGRacing) to bring a set of PFC01’s with him on Saturday morning.

Saturday morning I did my first paddock brake pad swap *beaming proud*. I had previously done a paddock brake system bleed after boiling the brake fluid back when I was running ATE Super Blue, only Castrol SRF now! Guess that makes me a paddock brake expert now.

Confession: Bruce the lead Tech from RRT (BMW performance shop in Sterling where I get our tech inspections done) was there with his car for the weekend so he instructed me through the pad swap on the first corner then I comfortably flew through the remaining 3 corners.

Sat/Sun with NASA were good, other than a few cars in our HPDE2 group that should have been in HPDE1. I’ll be sending a note to Jon Felton expressing my concern about that. Literally there were 3 cars turning > ~2:00 laps that Mary and I (as well as others) lapped several times/session, really breaks your rhythm & concentration when you have to slow down and follow cars that slow until the next passing zone (I’ll call it an exercise in patience).

Eric & Brian were great instructors, Mary and I both feel we improved our consistency and were able to work on the corners previously identified (mainly 3,9,10).

*Traqmate shows Mary was able to reduce her “coasting before braking” into 3 and 10 *thumbs up*

*Mary was 4Mph quicker through turn 3 than last Sunday (min speeds through 3 increased from 66mph to 70mph)

*Mary’s average speed through segment 3 which included turn 4 was 5mph higher (87mph v/s 92mph).

*Mary was 4Mph quicker through turn 10 than last Sunday (min speed through 10 increased from 69mph to 73mph)

*Mary turned multiple 1:31’s in her last session Sunday and one flying 1:30.3, nearly repeating her best lap from last week of 1:30.2.

*Traqmate shows she needs to continue to work on her braking into 1, instead of threshold braking then easing off the brake as she turns in, appears she is still jabbing the brakes just prior to turn in. It wasn’t an area she mentioned Brian and her discussed or worked on so no surprise this behavior was unchanged.

*I talked to her about the concept of trail-braking, she isn’t consciously trail-braking anywhere, I told her not to worry about it for now. She is probably doing it a little bit w/out realizing. It is hard to tell via the traqmate data (w/out brake pedal position sensor tap) whether she is trail-braking or simply scrubbing off speed early in the turn.

BTW: Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) tap and Brake Position Sensor tap are both on the winter project list. TPS is easy, I haven’t research BPS yet.

*Maybe turn 4 @ VIR would be an appropriate time to introduce conscious thinking about trail-braking, but I’ll leave that up to you as her instructor.

–
*We both exercised caution entering 4 but were able to enter w/only a lift (ie no brake) prior to entering 4.
–

*Eric and I worked on Turn 3 quite a bit. He had me move my turn in point back about a car length…now the turn in point I’m using is about a car length prior to where the second entrance way starts, we worked on entry/corner speed. Minimum speeds through Turn 3 increased from an average of 62Mph to 68Mph which resulted in .6sec quicker segment times through there.

*Nailed consistency through turn 8/9 resulting in high level of comfort through that area now. .3 sec quicker through that segment and picked up 5Mph by the time I passed under the bridge (107Mph v/s 102Mph).

*We played with 3rd gear v/s 4th gear through turn 10. Didn’t seem to be able to carry enough speed through 10 to be high enough in revs in 4th gear to power out. Carrying 73Mph through that corner (which is the max either Mary or I have done) puts us about 4500rpm in 4th which is significantly below ideal power band of the M3 (I have RPM tap installed in my car to traqmate so I’m confident of this RPM #). Traqmate ultimately confirmed 3rd gear was best for us now on street tires. Maybe sometime next year on r-comps we can experiment with 4th gear again.

*I turned a best lap Sunday afternoon of 1:30.5, a full second quicker than my previous best.

This week Mary is scheduled to complete her 4 x 20 min sessions on the simulator lapping at VIR, essentially giving her a day worth of track time prior to heading down Friday night. Good enough to memorize the direction and relative speed of all the turns. Same drill we followed before her first time at Summit – Main…ie a great jumpstart!

Halloween Weekend… my first event on Summit Main.

I am so excited yet a bit nervous for finally having the opportunity to get away from Shenandoah.

Kyle has been here several tmes and the competitve nature in me makes me feel timid about being able to master this track as well as him.

Thankfully I have requested Alan Herod as my instructor, so I am instantly feeling better about my learning curve. I feel very comfortable with Alan in the passenger seat to guide me towards excellence!

Day 1 was not too bad, learning the track in real life as opposed to the iRacing- (which is great for learning what to expect in turns but understand it’s not true to driving the real track).

Day 2 – much more confident- reviewed traqmate data- compare mine to Kyle’s data- now I see where I can make up time, gas more, break less, coast less. I am better in some segments, he is better in others- we learn from each others data. I take away from this where I can improve and put it to the test on Sunday.

Alan gives me the solo for my last run and I hit my top lap speed of 1:34! I think I just beat Kyle’s best! I am very excited- underdog as a girl with less time on the track. It wasn’t about beating Kyle’s time- more about wanting him to be proud of me for kicking ass as a great driver!

Happy Halloween!

This is a seminal moment for me. You see, my interest in cars started the day I saw the original E30

This is a seminal moment for me. You see, my interest in cars started the day I saw the original E30 M3, one of the most successful cars both on the track and on the road. It was a hand-built coupe that has the heart of a supercar and handling so sweet that in some ways all M3s that came after it were in many ways incomparable. The following generation E36 saw the engine jump to an inline six and now the E46 has the final iteration of the high revving power plant. So for me to write about the E46 M3 is a very special moment, I can’t count the number of times I’ve watched Tiff Needell drive the M3 in the video below.

The M3 has always been the halo car for BMW, the essence of what BMW has always been about, the ultimate driving machine. High specific output from a relatively small capacity engine, responsive naturally aspirated engines as happy at the redline and refined and tractable enough to be driven in the city. Rear wheel drive handling with a tricked out M differential at the rear that makes mere mortals look superhuman. In many ways, the M3 is all things to all men. It is reliable and comfortable enough to be driven daily, but also raw enough to be the trackday star. Even considering the premium you had to pay over the top of the line 330i Sport, it was no wonder indeed that the E46 M3 sold in the numbers it did. This makes the E46 M3 such a fantastic used buy today.

The steering does not have the ultimate feel of a Porsche or even the E30 M3, but it is still very accurate. Power is naturally abundant and the M3 has reached mini GT levels of performance, capable of keeping up with Nine Elevens and seeing off contemporary pretenders from AMG and Audi RSes round the bends. You feel hard-wired to the car, quickly building up confidence as you push yourself and the M3 to the limit. Grip is prodigious but such is the awesome power of the engine that smokey slides are but a prod of the accelerator away. This car was born to be driven sideways and you’ll be steering by throttle soon enough. If I had to pick something that stands out, it’d have to be the throttle response. The way you’re able to mete out just the right amount of power to the rear wheels cements the various parts to make this truly the ultimate driving machine.

For under $60,000, you can get yourself into an M3 with less than 100,000 kms. What you get is that fantastic 343 bhp engine, a practical 5 seater with good luggage space. The interior should still be very fresh and will not show obvious signs of wear. They are also young enough to be well taken care of by their first or second owners unlike the aging E36. They are in a sweet spot, depreciated enough to take the sting out of owning a supercar, but still young enough to be able to find a well serviced example. With so many on the market, walk away from any that do not have a full service record. The high revving engine is durable, but only if servicing has been done religiously. The M3 is extremely well-built and you should not find tattered rattling interiors. Buy the best you can afford and when you do take the plunge, you will be rewarded with a machine that will keep you smiling as you congratulate yourself on probably the best buy in your automotive life. This is definitely one of those must own before you die cars.

mbed is a next-generation 32-bit microcontroller platform. It’s a prototyping and teaching tool some

mbed is a next-generation 32-bit microcontroller platform. It’s a prototyping and teaching tool somewhat along the lines of Arduino. On steroids. With claws and fangs. Other contenders in this class include the MAKE Controller, STM32 Primer and Primer 2, Freescale Tower, and Microchip’s PIC32 Starter Kit. The mbed hardware has a number of advantages (and a few disadvantages) compared to these other platforms, but what really sets it apart is the development environment: the entire system — editor, compiler, libraries and reference materials — are completely web-based. There is no software to install or maintain on the host system.

The Hardware

The mbed board is sensibly priced at $60; about middle of the road among its peers. mbed’s size (or lack thereof) is among its greatest assets, measuring only about 1″ by 2″ (26 x 52mm) in a stout 40-pin DIP package that just barely manages to fit in a breadboard…a major win.

The top of the board is dominated by the microcontroller itself: a 60MHz NXP LPC1768 based on the eminently capable 32-bit ARM Cortex-M3 core, sporting 64K of RAM and 512K flash, and rounded out with an embarrassment of peripheral riches: Ethernet, USB (host, device, and to-go), CAN bus, multiple serial, I2C and SPI buses, 12-bit A/D and even a 10-bit D/A converter and realtime clock/calendar. Also on top is the USB connector (mini-B), some power regulation circuitry (operating on 4.5 to 9 volts DC, or USB power), several indicator LEDs, and the reset button (a plain vanilla tactile switch on our purchased unit, not the candy-like blue button seen in product shots).

The underside conceals an Ethernet transceiver chip (requiring only the addition of an RJ45 jack to get the board on a network) and a DiskOnChip-style component that provides a small (about 2MB) FAT filesystem when attached to a host system through USB, much like a thumb drive.

This latter feature — the FAT filesystem — is half of the key to mbed’s software-free, cross-platform magic. Getting new code onto the device is simply a matter of copying the compiled program (as a .bin file) to this drive. Press the reset button, and the new code is copied to the MCU’s internal flash and run. No special programming hardware dongle, no special bootloader software, just drag and drop. This has some serious implications. Pretty much any system these days can mount a FAT filesystem. We’re not just talking about getting Mac and Linux users into the fold alongside Windows…there’s also the impending wave of featherweight netbooks with ARM and VIA chips running peculiar, instant-on operating systems. Or the OLPC XO-1. Or older PowerPC Macs. The computers in the school’s lab that you’re not allowed to install any software on. Game consoles.

The Software

“Cloud computing” is still the hot buzzword this week, and the mbed project has adopted the concept wholeheartedly, comprising the other half of their softwareless strategy. Everything with mbed — everything, even your own source code — resides on their servers and is accessed through a web browser. This carries with it all of the good and bad points of any other network-based service such as Google Docs. There’s the potential for this to be a fantastic tool for teaching and collaboration, and in fact they’ve created such an online community for mbed, with forums and publicly-shareable code libraries. One can move between home and office, or travel around the world, and resume editing code on any system with a solid ’net connection. No need to check for software updates; the server will always be current.

mbed programs are written in C++ (yes, thankfully it’s “programs” and “C++,” not “sketches” or “the mbed language”) using their JavaScript-based online editor. When ready, click the Compile button. The compiler and linker run on the back end, on the server at the other end of the network connection. Provided your code is all syntactically valid, a compiled .bin file will then be downloaded to your computer…save this to the mbed USB disk, press the reset button, and you’re good to go. In Arduino-like fashion, the mbed device also appears as a virtual COM port, so you can monitor a program’s serial output using any terminal program.

The Good

We were taught that you should always say something kind before criticizing, so we’ll point out that the above process does, in fact, work exceedingly well, and has proved to be both quick and reliable. Once you get into the groove, the sequence of operations is no more onerous than with Arduino or any other microcontroller-specific programmer dongle.

To their credit, unlike some microcontroller evaluation kits, there are no artificial limitations to the mbed compiler; the full code and memory space of the processor is available to your code. The editor has realtime syntax coloring and multiple undo levels. And double-clicking on an error message in the compiler output will take you directly to the offending line, as in any decent IDE. You can import existing code from your local system to the mbed “cloud,” or likewise export individual files or an entire project. All good stuff.

The real saving grace of this setup is the libraries, both the official functions in what they call the “Handbook,” and community-contributed code in the “Cookbook.” A tremendous amount of functionality has been implemented in a concise and usually object-oriented manner. It’s almost comical sometimes, after having worked with other microcontrollers and girding for some expected coding nightmare, only to find that the corresponding library handles a task in a couple of lines (browse through the Handbook and Cookbook for examples). There’s a tendency also to follow stdlib or “UNIX-like” conventions for file access, character I/O, realtime clock access, etc., so existing systems programmers new to microcontrollers will feel right at home, no weird function names or syntaxes.

The mbed’s FAT filesystem is also accessible to the microcontroller, making it useful for more than just program storage. Web pages can be served from this space, or a data logging program can store results here. If the two megabyte capacity is too limiting for your needs, have a look at the SDCard library in the Cookbook — it’s almost trivial to wire up and use. Pretty much all of the libraries are like that!

The Bad and the Ugly

Hardware-wise, there are just a few minor nitpicks:

First is with the local FAT filesystem. Even though this is one of the device’s most unique features, and the very thing that enables its platform neutrality, the implementation just seems a bit anachronistic. The aforementioned SDCard library demonstrates how readily that format can be used. It’s faster, with the potential for far greater capacity, and cards could be easily swapped out for different code or data files. Not a major disappointment, just seems like an opportunity was missed to make this product even better.

Second is with the indicator LEDs on the board. Four of them, scant millimeters apart, all blue…making them pretty much worthless as status indicators from across the room, where they all blur into a singular blob. Ten years ago, blue LEDs were novel. Five years ago, they were mainstream, festooning every last USB hub, mouse, flash drive and imported piece of crap. Today they’re just tired, let’s get over it. Different colors would indicate status at a distant glance.

Finally, not a problem with the mbed board itself, but it would be nice to see one of the Cookbook projects, the “BoB2” breakout board, made into an available product. The blank board can be ordered through BatchPCB, but after postage and handling the price for just the empty board — no components — is $33. Have this populated and mass-produced, bundle it with the mbed in a $100 package, and it sounds like a winning setup, ready to go head-to-head with the MAKE Controller.

But really, those are just nitpicks. Our real beef is with the software…the code editor specifically. If you find the Arduino editor aggravating, the mbed editor will have you seeing red (or maybe purple if you factor in all those blue LEDs). Like Arduino, there’s no true tab formatting; everything’s expanded to spaces, like it or not. Auto-indent cannot be disabled, and there’s seemingly no command to increase or decrease the indentation of a block of code. If you’re accustomed to anything more than arrow keys to move and click-and-drag to highlight text, the editor disregards a lot of system-native editing behaviors that may be deeply ingrained in your muscle memory (such as shift-clicking to select a range of text, or triple-click-and-drag for multiple contiguous lines). What’s more, the quirky behaviors are a little different across each browser and operating system. Don’t even try that triple-click-and-drag in Firefox for Mac…you won’t get your text cursor back without a complete reboot (seriously, just restarting the browser isn’t sufficient). And at present, only the most common browsers are supported; all others are currently shut out.

The closed-source nature of the tools may also be off-putting to some. If one finds the Arduino editor distasteful, there are options: get in there and change the code, or simply use a different editor and link with the Arduino libraries manually…it’s all legal and encouraged. With mbed, there are no alternatives. Access to the compiler and libraries is “free as in beer,” but not “free as in speech.” There’s little recourse should the service ever be taken down, or if they should suddenly start charging a subscription fee (there’s no indication this is planned, just a hypothetical scenario).

The good news, at least with regard to the former, is that software is of course infinitely more malleable than hardware, and it’s almost certain the tools will improve with time. The site is under active development…new “Home” and “Notebook” features were added for registered users just yesterday. Perhaps, given time, they’ll get the Command key working properly on the Mac. The selection of user-submitted code will expand regardless, making it progressively easier to do more and different things with this board.

In Summary

The mbed Tour page is frank about what the platform is good for, and what it’s not. mbed was intended as a quick prototyping and educational tool, and at that it excels. A lack of features such as a debugger or offline compiler keep this from being a professional-strength development platform, which is okay. Think of it as Arduino: The Next Generation. Although the mbed board costs more up front than Arduino, there are capabilities here that would otherwise require costly “shields” and strain every last byte and CPU cycle of the 8-bit ATmega328 processor: Ethernet, USB, SD cards…mbed handles these tasks with aplomb.

mbed is not without its flaws, and the “cloud” development approach may never sit right with some. For a product that’s just weeks out of beta testing, the results thus far are extremely encouraging. There’s immense potential here: a seriously powerful chip, easy to interface and to program. If the online tools can be improved, or if open source alternatives become available, mbed could be a major player. We expect to be seeing a lot more of this device in future hacks.

The guys at BMW’s M works division say that their current priority is to build us a sub-M3 sports car. After bringing us the M3 GTS it seems like they want to focus on a smaller fast car. But the 1-Series hatch already has a pretty hot version. The 135i has a 306 bhp engine which is quite plenty for such a small car. So presumably the 1-Series M will be even hotter. But that will put it in the path of the M3. The flagship saloon has a V8 engine with 420 horsepower but the 1-Series is smaller, therefore lighter. Voices say the small BMW can get an upgraded engine up to 330bhp. They also say that it will cost about €35,000 in Europe and 10.000$ less than the M3 in the US. I’m not quite sure if the extra 24 bhp will be worth extra money and I’m not very fond of the 1-Series either so they’re not getting any encouragment from me to build this new car. I hope they’ll do a good job to change my mind. Until then, here is a review from top gear with the 130i vs. the Golf R32.

Oh that’s a simple question… a BMW M3 GTS!

I don’t know if you saw the whole GTS Challenge Event thing, and if you did, you remember how this guy “Mr. Cooper” gave Mr. Lutz (GM vice-chairman) a “spank” using his M3 Sedan where he clocked in a lap 6 seconds faster than Mr. Bob Lutz in his GM-provided 556hp Cadillac CTS-V Super Sedan.

Ok, yes you remember… Well, this… thing… called M3 GTS is like the Mr. Cooper’s M3 but on steroids; an all-out Track Ready M3, from BMW! (lightweight material, no back seats, front racing seats, low as heck, track tuned suspension, a big wing…);

Only if all car manufacturers were as nice as BMW with their customers!
