My third bootleg, made back in April 2004. A filthy affair between m83 (remixed by Jackson), Aphex Twin and Khia.

rather than a post about an artist in particular, i’ll be writing about a genre that many attr

rather than a post about an artist in particular, i’ll be writing about a genre that many attribute to starting the rise of electronic music. dating to the late 70s, italo disco was really only popular in europe and was the first genre to produce music using only electronic means. synthesizers, drum machines, apreggiators… the future! even the human voice (see moskow diskow) was vocoded and given that spacey robot sound.

as my favourite italo disco blog puts it: “the future is 25 years old” or, from wikipedia: “…the genre featured love-song lyrics sung in English with heavy foreign accents. English was more often than not the artists’ second language, creating lyrics that were often considered to be almost nonsensical. Along with love, italo disco themes deal with robots and space, sometimes combining all three.”

so… robots + space + love = italo disco… sounds like my favourite musical!

anyway, all of these funky robotic foreign accents have definitely influenced modern music (aeroplane comes to mind.. and eiffel 65, that italian one hit wonder whose blue permeated your young minds in the late 90s)

ok, so maybe those are not the best examples… little boots? rod stewart? M83? alan braxe? new order?

it’s simple. all electronic music was influenced, directly or indirectly, by the mind warping arped synths of italo disco, because italo disco was the first! have a listen to the tracks below and think about it the next time you’ve got something else playing… you’ll be surprised.

utter nostalgia!

As usual, there’s a good slab of fresh drum & bass, this month from artists such as Spectrasoul, Blu Mar Ten, Rockwell and more. Following on from last month, there’s a little bit of Bat For Lashes too.

Also, in keeping with the diverse nature of these mixes, I’ve included a bit of 70s Underground Disco from Two Man Sound, and a Fender Rhodes jazz-funk anthem courtesy of Gil Scott Heron. A special thanks must be given to DJ DMT for sourcing the Edú Lobo track for me. I’m very grateful, I love that song!

This is the latest album from the young Hamburg team who play their post-rock with a pinch of electronica.

Opening track Captured Moments is a promising start with its bleary-eyed guitars that explode into white noise, layered by fuzzy underwater strings and piano. Matthew Jason and Chris Burda then continue this winning streak with former single Crawling and the vibrant, dramatic title track.

But further in, the album collapses under its own weight. Tranquillity is an uncomfortable mix of hair-metal guitar and rigid, sequenced backing tracks. Lacking the ragged rock rush of Mogwai, much of this album has the synthetic sound of an overproduced bedroom recording. Angle Of Incidence and the unfortunately titled A Smell Of Boiled Greens drift in to the sterile realms of Muzak, whilst Far To The Past could be an Editors’ instrumental outtake.

Intelligence and Take A Shot On Me do however give the album a rousing end, almost returning to the impressive form of the opening tracks. But ultimately, despite the flashes of brilliance, this duo doesn’t do enough with this well-trodden genre to warrant repeated listens.

Mei Yau and I were recently discussing the unusual relationship that France has with American popular culture. We came to the conclusion that despite (or maybe partly because of) France’s general resistance to the sort of full-scale Americanisation that we have experienced in the UK, for years the French have appeared to be fascinated by a mythical, archetypal vision of America that bears little relation to historical or current reality. That is to say that whilst American culture and ideas have permeated almost every insignificant aspect of British life – due in part, no doubt, to our shared linguistic and cultural heritage – this has perhaps not happened to quite the same extent in France. Therefore, French film-makers, musicians and other artists have been able to explore and cultivate an idea of America that might seem ludicrous and contrived in a country such as the UK, where every other television programme or song on the radio is from the USA.

Examples of this can be seen in many different strands of French culture: the slightly bizarre popularity of Western-themed French language cartoons such as Lucky Luke and Willie Boy; the French film industry’s hero worship of such Hollywood outsider figures as Samuel Fuller and Mickey Rourke; Serge Gainsbourg’s scabrous yet also somewhat enchanted take on American trash culture in many of his most famous songs; the sincere fascination displayed by young French musicians like M83 and the Valerie Collective towards American teen films such as those of John Hughes, along with other more ephemeral aspects of 1980s US youth/pop culture that are often held up for derision and ridicule here in the UK.

This topic could clearly be discussed at much greater length, and maybe I will do so at some point. For now though, I’ll just leave you with a nice homemade video (not by us!) for a classic song that – along with the above links – hopefully illustrates to some extent what I’ve been saying.

Little while back M83 had this video contest for their song “We Own The Sky” with Pitchfork. Mad people submitted really good videos. Just finished checking out a bunch of em on Vimeo. Crazy to see how people interpret the music differently and turn them into visuals. Most of the videos were pretty damn good. Some were trash. Video above won. Directed by Alex Takacs. Deserved to win. Video below also caught my eye though. Done by David Altobelli. I love the completely different ideas for the same song.

M83 is an electronic/dream pop act comprised of French musician Anthony Gonzalez. The band was founded in 2001 by Gonzalez and former member Nicolas Fromageau in Antibes. The musical style of the band owes something to the shoegazing genre in its extensive use of reverb effects and lyrics spoken softly over loud instrumentals, though M83’s songs employ considerably less guitar than most shoegazing bands.

With these guys you either love ‘em or hate ‘em. I just happen to love their fifth album Saturdays=Youth. One good friend I know said its hard to listen to them because they feel like they should be watching a movie. Their songs are perfect for a soundtrack, maybe they’ll be the soundtrack to your life. Check ‘em out.

We’re guessing that you’ve had your fill of Halloween treats the last couple of days (well, one last Twix bar couldn’t hurt). But have you ever stopped to think about the allure of this peculiar holiday? The influences on this (mostly secular) day of celebration are many. And although Halloween’s popularity spikes in the United States, many other countries now join in the fun. For some individuals, the opportunity to play dress-up and reinvent themselves is too exciting to pass up. For others, an entire population masking who they are and reveling in anonymity can be a bit disturbing.

In past years, Great River Radio has used this occasion to dig into our shared library and play music with an emphasis on Saints, Souls and Goblins. This afternoon we’ll take a little different tack as we bring you music inspired by the things that raise the hair on our arms (or backs!). You’ll hear music about darkness and shadows, homicidal maniacs and victims, graveyards and wild things. Don’t think of this as a stereotypical or clichéd attempt at playing Halloween music. We’ll have tracks from Great River Radio-endorsed artists such as Neko Case, Andrew Bird, Tom Waits, Joe Henry, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, M83, Eels and Band of Horses. We’ll have local music from Roma di Luna, Trip Shakespeare and the Suburbs. And we’ll even fit in listener request segment with some of your favorites. In other words, it’s the sort of quality music you’ve come to expect from Great River Radio. You’re not going to want to miss it.

We’re live from 4-6 p.m. (CST) today via http://www.kustradio.com
Chat with us in the studio via iChat or AIM at screen name: kustradio

Next week is our annual SJAW (Social Justice Awareness Week) show. In order to maintain our club status at KUST, each semester we must devote a show to a topic or theme that has some social relevance. Our theme next week is health care. Do you have any health- or illness-related songs you would like to hear? Send us a an email or post your requests on our Website.

Antville has a list of the 101 best music videos of the 2000s, and the list is fairly canonical. I recommend a look.

I would, however, like to point out five of the best videos not included on Antville’s somewhat limited list…

M83 – Don’t Save Us From the Flames: A sweet unrequited high school love story with a great tune, plus girl on bike meets dream boy on bike in ghost outfits! Come on, don’t pretend like you didn’t enjoy it.

Juvenile – Get Ya Hustle On: Post-Katrina, Juvenile’s drug rap seems somehow anachronistic, but the video itself highlights the relevance of the genre. The rather blunt political imagery — marching street thugs in Cheney and Bush masks, a rims-clad Escalade towed by horses — has nothing on the stark image of a man amidst the rubble holding a sign: “STILL HERE.” Katrina changed everything, and nothing.

Kanye West – Throw Some D’s (remix): Kanye’s old ass cousin? Stripping sign-language translator? Spirit fingers for Alicia Keys? “That just happened.”

Electric Six – Gay Bar: OK, it’s a gimmick. But how could you go wrong with Abraham Lincoln(s) in various states of undress? Also, bonus points for bleeping out “war” and “nuclear war.”

E-40 – Tell Me When To Go: This Face alone would have sold me on this video, but everything about it screams the do-it-yourself amateur joy of hyphy. I love how E-40 has just the right amount of nonchalance to carry this video; he vaguely acknowledges the camera, but on the whole, it’s clear that he is enjoying himself behind that smirk. Hip-hop had suffered from a downer phase, before the ignorant bliss of hyphy brought it back. Then Soulja Boy and Auto-Tune had to come ruin things…

I was definitely a goth in high school and like every black-clad rocker girl in the late 90’s,

I was definitely a goth in high school and like every black-clad rocker girl in the late 90’s, I loved Nine Inch Nails. I was pretty sure I was going to marry Trent Reznor and have all of his angry little babies. In 2005 I had the opportunity to spend about half an hour in a room with the man (and 2 other people) and I could have sworn he’d realised I was the love of his life.

I guess not though, since that isn’t me in the dress. Frig!

Trent Reznor took Mariqueen Maandig, solo artist and former singer of West Indian Girl, as his bride this past Saturday, October 17th. I have to say, as details come out, I’m surprised at how traditional the wedding seems to be.

NIN touring member, Danny Lohner, let the cat out of the bag when he updated his Twitter page on the worst day of my life.

Click for the photo.

ExploreMusic has learned from a ‘credible source’ that it was M83’s “We Own The Sky” that took the honor of being the song that Mr & Mrs Reznor are dancing to in the photo that Lohner posted.

If you’re curious, both Mariqueen Maandig’s solo work and West Indian Girl are kind of interesting. Both projects are heavy on the electronic clicks, beeps, pops, and rhythms, though they are more shoegaze (or nu-gaze) than dancy. Mariqueen’s solo stuff is definitely darker and more experimental than West Indian Girl, but if you like M83 you’ll probably dig what they have going on.

Today, coincidentally, is also the 20th anniversary of Pretty Hate Machine’s release. We’re getting old, my friends.

With winter well and truly on its way we’re now experiencing dark mornings and dark (early) ev

With winter well and truly on its way we’re now experiencing dark mornings and dark (early) evenings. Well maybe not everybody gets to see the dark mornings, some may not have the displeasure of having to arise at 6am but i do and by the time i get home from work it’s either half 5 or 6. Sometimes later. Basically at this time of year i feel like a vampire, i hardly see any daylight, between the hours of 8am and 5pm i’m stuck in a garage all day and because it’s cold this time of year the huge shutter door is left firmly closed, opening only to let vehicles enter and leave. So i get the odd glimpse of daylight but not much, apart from when break time comes and it’s outside to bask in the cold, frosty air while i can!

But even though it may seem like i’m complaining about the dark, it’s the exact opposite. Now before you get the wrong idea, i’m not some strange guy who likes to sit in the dark all the time on my own and plot the worlds downfall but there is something very appealing and calming about being in the dark. If you’re alone, it can be relaxing, especially with music and if you’re with someone then it heightens and alleviates everything that goes on, your voice is clearer, your senses get stronger, right through from smell to touch, pretty much everything. I’m sure everybody has sat late into the night with friends and talked in the dark at some point. Especially in the days when you’d have friends staying over. I used to sit up obscenely late into the dark hours of the morning with a really good friend of mine and just talk for hours about everything and anything.

And in the dark there are no illusions, there’s nothing to see, nothing to hide, its just, well, dark i suppose.

So, here’s the most apt tracks i could come up with…

MP3’s
With The Lights Out, It’s Less Dangerous

If watching the latest MTV Music awards has illustrated anything (and not just Kanye West’s “outburst”), it’s that today’s music scene is a world full of jaded, over-pampered, attention seeking, product hawking, uptight musicians, or as everyone else calls them, dicks. Thankfully, we have someone like Charlotte Martin, who has proven to be a sonic savior, an artist who has delivered fresh and inventive music into the gag-inducing music scene for 10 years running. Her compositions float seamlessly between pop, electro, dance, and singer/songwriter, with her powerful opera-trained vocal chords leading the charge, paired with a piano playing dexterity that has the fury of a monsoon delivered with the delicateness of a soft caress. She is a music industry veteran who has clocked a decade in the field; from her humble beginnings in local Los Angeles clubs, to going through the trials and tribulations of a major label record contract and living to tell about it, to the present challenges of motherhood and gaining the freedom to guide her own career. And rather than enjoying the fruits of her labors, she chose to tough it out by launching the “Mad Fast Acoustic Tour” in the middle of recording a new album, with family in tow.

Mark from Nevermind the Posers had the chance to sit down with Charlotte at World Café Live in Philadelphia, PA on the first night of her 4 date tour (September 30, 2009) to discuss the fans, family life, music, the horrors of post-nasal drip, and her new instrumental release Piano Trees.

M (Mark): You’re a working mother who’s charting the course of her career, in the midst of recording a new album, and you have just completed a side project. With so much going on, why choose to launch a mini-tour in the midst of all of this?

CM (Charlotte Martin): I don’t know… because I’m insane. Honestly, I just want people to know that I am still able to tour; it’s really hard to tour with a baby, but actually mine is really easy [being that] he’s a good kid. The only thing that’s difficult is the extra gear [pointing to all of the baby gear]. I can’t do as much anymore, not all at the same time. I’m multi-tasking as a mom, and trying to run a house, so much that I can’t work on a record and tour at the same time. And the reason that this side project came out is because I have awesome people that helped me put it together. I wouldn’t have been able to do that by myself; I fully give props. As far as the writing goes, I’m still a bit slow. I mean we’ve recorded about 6 songs; most of it is written, but I am kind of at the mercy of Ken’s [Ken Andrews, Charlotte's husband and producer] schedule, because I want to work with him. When we get back from these dates he’s going to work pretty much for a solid 3 weeks, so I am hoping to finish it by the end of the year… [by] early January, because my team wants to try to put it out next year.

M: On this tour you are releasing a side-project called Piano Trees and I read that you wrote it specifically to inspire other artists.

CM: I did. It didn’t seem like I was. I was actually going to write a book called ‘Word Trees’, because I write a lot of my songs from these lists that I have been brainstorming, broken thoughts and words, I call Word Trees. And I have 20-30 something books now; I was going to make a coffee table sort of art book, and the Piano Trees CD was going to go with the book, but it’s ridiculously expensive to make a book. So, when I figured out my record probably wasn’t going to be done this year, I figured [that] I have got to give everybody something, so why not? And fast forward from 2005 ’til now, lots of dancers dance to my stuff on all of these shows, which is amazing.

M: Like ‘So You Think You Can Dance’?

CM: Yeah! Tons of dancers, painters, photographers, actors and other musicians, and I thought “this would be really good for people”. Then the point became very clear that it might be cool for people if they are in the process of writing something. Honestly, you can’t write music to it, but if you’re a musician… I write lyrics while listening to my favorite bands all of the time, which is probably why the song “The Kick Inside” by Kate Bush is in the song “Up All Night”.

M: I know a lot of people ask you about your influences. You’ve name checked artists like New Order, The Cure, Kate Bush; I was wondering who are some of the other artists that you listened to that inspired you while you were making Piano Trees?

CM: A band called Stars of the Lid, a band called Explosions in the Sky; I’m really, really into M83, Radio Department, this piano player named Dustin O’Halloran; his music is pretty similar to Piano Trees except that it’s way sweeter, almost more proper classical. It’s all of my Shoe-Gazer stuff that I don’t sound like but that I want to be [laughing]. I really love it all, I just never do that… ever.

M: Along with past tour releases Darkest Hours, Veins, and the Rarities series, Piano Trees is also being released on tour, why release such a steady amount of material during tours?

CM: I feel like it gives me an excuse to tour because I have something coming out, otherwise I don’t know if I would tour just to tour. It’s for fun; I feel like it’s my obligation to give you good new music if you’re going to buy a ticket to come see me play.

M: A lot of other artists milk the same thing for years.

CM: No, I have never done a record cycle for longer than a year, because the records weren’t quite that huge. You know, on my level you have to release a lot of material to make a living… and I am blessed that people buy it, but I have got to release a lot. I’m just really lucky; I mean they are the reason that I have a job.

M: One of the things that is noticeable about the shows, in addition to the growing crowds, are the familiar faces that I see. What effect has having such a dedicated fan base had on your writing and career?

CM: Everything. I write thinking, “Is this going to bore people? Are people going to be into this”? I mean, I write for myself too, but I’m very conscientious. I know that there is a lot of my fan base that wants me to do a solo record, and honestly I feel like saying, “You think that you want that for a whole record, but I don’t think you want it that… stark”. Even On Your Shore was in a lot of ways as dense as Stromata, it was just orchestra, but there were lots of layers. People think they want [another] On Your Shore because it’s sparse, but it really isn’t, it just has sparser moments.

M: Around the time of On Your Shore, you started collaborating with a lot of dance acts; you did a song with the Crystal Method (“Glass Breaker”), with DJ Tiesto (“Sweet Things”), and most recently, I was ecstatic to see that you collaborated with BT on his next album. how did that come about? How was the recording process? Was it any different than what you are used to?

CM: Well, he sent me a track, and I recorded over it and sent it back to him.

M: So that’s pretty much it with BT then?

CM: Yeah. I really don’t know what he’s doing right now. He’s been working on it for a while, because we did that song 2 years ago. It’s called “Feed the Monster”, it’s slammin’… it’s Garbage, meets Shiny Toy Guns, meets BT.

M: Each of your records seem to have its own distinct sound and atmosphere, how do you determine which sonic direction that you want to take during the recording process?

CM: Well, with Stromata we decided pretty quickly. With this new record, the writing, or the actual song itself tells Ken and I where it should go. I mean we do get stumped; there is this one [song] now that is called “Everything is Tied to Little Strings” that we just can’t crack. We actually asked Greg [Greg Edwards of Autolux and Failure] to work on it because it’s super weird. It’s a really tough nut to crack, but I have had songs that were tough to crack before. I mean “Every Time It Rains” is a simple pop song, and this [new track] is way more complex than that… like this is arty art. And that took us years to finish the album version of “Every Time It Rains”, I mean I have 5 versions of that song. We wrote it in the studio while cutting it, it was always evolving.

M: Being that you’re an independent artist with a still flourishing career, how important would you say that word of mouth has been in the development of your career?

CM: It’s all. It could be a lot more too, because what I have is all people… it doesn’t get any more grassroots than this. I’ve never had a break, I just slugged it out and toured… and I’ve had some good tours; Liz Phair’s “Chicks with Attitude” tour and Howie Day.

M: I was surprised to read about in your newsletter is that you allow your shows to be taped. Why do you allow it?

CM: I have a lot of international fans. I have been doing this for 10 years and it’s been tragic that I haven’t made it over to tour, especially in Japan, where On Your Shore did okay on import. I don’t know how to do that yet, so I’m just like “tape it all”. And if they can remain a fan and connect to me that way, then go for it.

M: Something like that ties into the fact that a lot of the praise coming from your fans is your personal interaction with them. During shows, I know that you make faces at people, you’ve made faces at me; and on this tour you took another step [with fan interaction] and you invited your fans to post song requests on your websites message boards.

CM: I’m going to do my best… I rehearsed a lot of them, and there were A LOT of requests. It’s finding that balance, because I am going to play a couple of new ones, and I want to play a couple that I know people want to hear, and then there’s the fans that want to hear everything obscure, and I don’t think that would make for a good show, personally.

M: My last question could be directed at both of you [Charlotte and Ken]. There was a project a while back that both of you were supposed to be involved in called Digital Noise Academy. I know that it involved a lot of your collaborators and friends, and I was just wondering whatever became of it?

[Ken Andrews joins the interview]

KA: Well, it exists…

CM: A whole record.

KA: No one’s heard it except the band, because we haven’t had the time to organize a release. I know that that sounds ridiculous, but it’s actually true. With everyone’s projects, and the baby, and one of the other members also having a baby… that this project even happened at all was amazing. And now the fact that it is sitting there waiting to be released is kind of a bummer, but we’re pursuing it. We’re just looking for the right way to release it, because it’s not a real band in the sense that we don’t play shows all of the time, and it’s not like we’re going to tour on top of the release.

CM: And we’re not going out for a big record deal. We’re all doing our personal artist careers, production careers… we all have our own things. But it’s a very artistically fulfilling project.

KA: It’s going to come out

CM: It’ll come out. It makes me sad to think of it not coming out.

Photos and interview by Mark Bonczek

Vean este video primaveral y feliz de m83, uno de mis cultores favoritos de la adolescencia pop. De hecho, su último disco se llama “Saturday=Youth”.

Their goal with this video was to interpret the pure, emotional essence of We Own the Sky, and then communicate it through a simple story about young love, lens flares, and a confetti party. They set out to capture the beauty that lies between the daunting uncertainty and eternal optimism of youth, a theme they felt was prevalent in Saturday=Youth and one which resonated in their own lives.

Anthony Gonzalez (aka M83) says of this video:
“I like the atmosphere of it cause it fits perfectly to the music and the lyrics. It’s exactly what I had in mind when I wrote the song.”

Si les gusta, les recomiendo entrar al myspace de m83 y revisar sus otros videos, siempre con protagonistas adolescentes y estética alucinante.

This is a badass tune I’ve been rockin’ for a bit, goes great with minimal house or a nice 808 electro break…
