With the twin arrivals of the Dell Adamo XPS and Windows 7, there’s a new wave of Fox News-esque ginned up drama about the arms race against Apple’s Mac Book Air for the title of world’s best ultrathin laptop.

Apart from tech bloggers and gadget foamers, who cares? Has anyone actually seen any of these exotic creatures outside a test lab? How many have been sold in this category?

And how is it a competition when Apple hasn’t bothered to do a follow-up to the original? They made their design statement and  have moved on to innovate in categories where people actually buy lots of stuff. Meanwhile, Dell’s R&D resources are mired in a competition to sell a few hundred units of executive desk candy.

Even among tech bloggers who are excitedly pumping out reviews pitting the Dell Adamo XPS vs. the Mac Book Air, the net effect is a commentary on fantasy objects rather than something they would/could actually buy/use outside their test labs. Sort of like discussing who’s the more powerful superhero, Superman or The Sentry: whoever wins, what does it matter in the real world?

Por fin es una realidad y el MacBook Air está o mejor dicho estará entre nosotros en un par de semanas. Se trata del portátil más fino del mundo (como bien ha demostrado Jobs, cabe perfectamente en un sobre, sin estar éste forzado) y dispone de varias características que te comentaremos durante toda la entrada.

Empezaremos por el diseño exterior, donde encontramos una carcasa completamente de aluminio, la pantalla está completamente libre de mercurio, la placa base no dispone de BFR y el cierre es el ya característico, magnético.

En su interior encontramos que dispone del mismo teclado que el MacBook, pero incluye sensor de iluminación, pantalla de LEDs de 13,3″ y la cámara iSight incorporada. En los laterales encontramos 1 puerto USB(?), un conector mini-DVI y toma de auriculares. Como ya se comentaba en los cientos de rumores que circulaban en la red, no dispone de unidad óptica, pero podremos adquirir una externa a un precio de $99. Además, el software que integra, nos permitirá conectarle una unidad óptica cualquiera, ya sea de PC o de Mac. El trackpad será multitouch o multitáctil y con unos simples movimiento sobre él, podremos hacer rotar las fotografías o por ejemplo, hacer zoom en las zonas que deseemos.

En el interior disponemos de varias configuraciones. Los procesadores que se utilizan son Intel Core 2 Duo a 1,6 Ghz o 1,8 Ghz, 2GB de RAM, disco duro de 1,8″ de 80GB o podemos optar por un disco en estado sólido (SSD) de 64GB.

En la parte de las conexiones, encontramos que dispone de conexión inalámbrica 802.11n, bluetooth 2.1+EDR. La parte de la autonomía es de 5 horas y para cargarla, el nuevo Magsafe es de 45W y más pequeño.

Ahora entramos en terreno pantanoso, el precio. El modelo básico parte desde los 1649€ y todo dependerá de la configuración que decidamos, hasta los 2798€.

“El medio es tan importante como el propio mensaje” comentan los grandes de la Publicidad, pero no hace falta ser un gurú del Mk para saber que cuando estamos en una discoteca y alguien nos mira fijamente y  guiña un ojo quiere decir “algo” concreto que todos sabemos… este es el caso mas claro que podria poner de ejemplo para indicar que el medio aqui es esencial!…

Parece también, que no soy la única en darse cuenta de ello, COCA-COLA la multinacional americana de refrescos, ha comenzado a realizar campañas de Marketing corporal, es decir… ha decidido proponer a personas (que corresponden con su imagen de marca) que se coloquen calcamonías con publicidad de su logo o tatuajes (que ya son casos extremos!)…

No sé cuanto cobraran estos figurantes… pero Señores de Coca-Cola, me ofrezco a medias (sólo calcamonía) como medio…  cobro solo 100€ al día por llevar en mi mano izquierda su calcamonía!!! que demonios!! Un dinerillo extra siempre es bienvenido!!!…

Η MSI ξεκίνησε η διάθεση του νέου φορητού υπολογιστή MSI X-Slim 340, που έχει χαρακτηριστεί ως ο σημαντικότερος αντίπαλος του Apple MacBook Air. To MSI X-Slim 340 θα είναι αρχικά διαθέσιμο στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες και θα έχει οθόνη 13” με λειτουργικό σύστημα τα Windows Vista Home.

Συγκριτικά με προηγούμενες ανακοινώσεις σχετικά με τα χαρακτηριστικά του, το MSI X-Slim 340 θα κάνει την ευχάριστη έκπληξη καθώς θα χρησιμοποιεί τον χαμηλής κατανάλωσης Intel Core 2 Solo επεξεργαστή αντί για τον Atom microprocessor, που είχε αρχικά σχεδιαστεί να φέρει. There’s a new kid in town and it’s called the Adamo!

Ultra thin to rival the MacBook Air, Dell’s  Adamo is a sleek and sexy 13-inch notebook with a backlit keyboard,  clearview glass display and sturdy aluminum case. It comes in two designs  and colourways of  black or pearl, and arguably it’s almost a PC version of the Apple MacBook Air.

Dell is marketing the new Adamoas a premium collection of personal computing products — with a heavy emphasis on aesthetics and cutting edge design.Two models are available; Admire priced at £1649 is the little brother and  features a 1.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 2GB 800MHz DDR3 memory. Big Sister,  Desire which is priced at  £2249 has a 1.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 4GB 800MHz DDR3.

There is not much ugly about this little sex kitten!

Mit großem Tamtam wurde am Samstag der erste deutsche Apple Retail Store eröffnet. Der Flagship Store liegt in der Rosenstraße, gleich beim Marienplatz, also in einer 1a-Lage.

Und Apple inszenierte wieder einen Rummel. Die ersten 2500 Besucher des Stores bekamen ein T-Shirt geschenkt. Ich kam leider erst am Nachmittag zum Store und hatte somit das Nachsehen. Blogger wie Kollege Richard Joerges berichteten, dass rund 4000 Leute auf Einlass warteten. Da auf dem Marienplatz zudem noch Christkindlmarkt ist, war es ein wahrer Menschenauflauf.

Der zweistöckige Store ist nach dem bekannten Apple-Schema aufgebaut. Helle Holztische mit dem Macs, iMacs, iPhones, iPods und Zubehör. Im Parterre die MacBooks, MacBook Pros und Mac Book Air sowie iPod und Co. Im ersten Stock zweimal eine Genius Bar und das Peripherie-Zeugs sowie die Kinderecke, in der sich Sohnemann auch gleich Colin McRae reinzog. Die gläserne Treppe durfte im Apple Store Deutschland nicht fehlen, obwohl die Gewerbeaufsicht ein Stahlgeländer vorschrieb. Ich habe schon einige Apple Stores gesehen, wie London (der erste in Europa), San Fransisco, LA und so war es keine super Überraschung mehr. Doch den Leuten hat es scheinbar gefallen. Ich habe ein Video gedreht und bei YouTube eingestellt, die den Ansturm auf den Store gut zeigt.

Sehr schön auch die Konkurrenz der Elektromärkte in München. In meiner Lokalzeitung, dem Münchner Merkur, inserierte der Media Markt mit den Worten „Wir begrüßen Apple mit den besten Preisen der Stadt“. Solch Marketing und Werbung gefällt mir, das hat Humor. Also, willkommen Apple Retail Store in München und Gravis im Tal macht wohl bald was anderes. 

For all the griping about Microsoft and its problems with Operating Systems, Apple is rapidly moving into the same class. There is a very annoying problem that arrived with a required update. Now every so often the Mac Book Air stops working while it rescans and reconnects to the WiFi Access Point.

Browsing the web shows that this has been a problem since the First Quarter of this year.

Argh!

Don’t buy Microsoft or Apple. Bite the bullet and go directly to Linux. At least, when you have a problem, you’ll know you are on your own!

There is a big fat hole in the market between mobile devices like the iPhone and regular laptops. But smaller, underpowered laptops/Netbooks aren’t the answer for the mass market. Most of the Netbooks aren’t much cheaper than very low end laptops (and those laptops have normal keyboard and much bigger screens).

The problem with Netbooks is they are trying to address two markets at once: emerging markets where price is very important, and developed markets where people want a second computer. The emerging markets don’t care about size, they just want it at a low cost – so offer them something that’s bigger and works better at the same price (remember, bigger = cheaper for most computer parts except the screen). Developed markets don’t care about price as much as performance, and Netbooks cut too many corners. Perhaps that’s why Netbook screens are starting to inch up to 10 and 11 inches. Which doesn’t really make them much different from normal laptops (and the prices are about the same).

So what’s the answer?  When you ditch the operating system and all it’s weight and focus on a device that runs a browser only (a true netbook), you can make do with mobile phone level hardware. Give people a big screen to really experience the Internet. Make it a touch screen or add a normal keyboard. And keep it really inexpensive. That’s a device people will want.

The sub notebooks can get bigger and more useful without sacrificing cost, which is great for emerging markets and students. Tiny notebooks that perform well will be higher cost, and there’s a market for those, too.

Glad to know I’m not alone. Slight comfort. I almost bought a new AP thinking that had to be the problem. Of course, this has only happened since the OS update. I never had a problem prior to that. None of the subsequent updates have helped, either. Getting rid of the airport status in the menu bar has only helped in that I don’t constantly see black bars fade to completely ghosted every 30 seconds. I’m hoping that this issue is resolved soon. It’s beyond maddening.

Et oui je n’aime pas vraiment la marque Apple que tous le monde affectionne tant ! Pour autant j’adore regarder leurs campagnes de pub ! qui sont toujours avant gardiste et qui font souvent découvrir de nouveaux talents musicaux ! C’est donc pour cela que je me rebelle lorsque je vois sur le net que Sony a tous simplement copier la campagne du Mac Book Air sur les tablettes de train en Belgique
