2009 was quite a year if, like me, you made the leap to Mac after years of working with Windows.  The wonder of a new laptop uncluttered with third-party software (most of which is pointless), a fast boot up, lack of error messages and not to mention the quietest laptop I’ve ever had all made such a huge difference.  The first couple of weeks of “oh my god what have I done” quickly switched into wow, this is so easy/cool/fast and intuitive.  You get the picture.  Ten months later and the honeymoon is definitely over but the love appears everlasting.

After some initial resistance I eventually decided to take a trial on Mobile Me.  I wanted a cloud online storage and back-up service.  Mac Life did a review but none of them quite measured up either because the functionality wasn’t there, or because I had no clue as to who actually ran the services and how safe my data might be.  Since I’m offering to upload everything (American Express statements, photo’s etc) to a “service in the sky” I need to know who is caring for my data.  It’s important stuff.

I had 12gb of data to upload.  This took a while over my 500k upload connection speed.  Many nights of going to bed leaving the laptop to do its thing, feeding copies of my data into the cloud.  A couple of weeks later I’m done. Then, last week, terror was to strike.  I stupidly signed out of Mobile Me in the laptop system preferences at which point my local copy of every file and folder was destroyed.  A wonderful security feature from the laptop perspective.  Not so great having to download a copy of the 12gb I had painstakingly uploaded only weeks before.

Lesson #1: If you subscribe to Mobile Me, never, ever sign out of the service on your laptop.  You might just live to regret it…

Mobile Me is good.  It does what it says on the tin.  It doesn’t allow me to use my own domain email address effectively and that’s a big downside for me, but on the back-up side of things it’s flawless, low maintenance and I feel confident that my stuff is safe.  But it’s not just about back-up, there’s plenty more on offer for the annual fee.  I’ll talk more about the key benefits and some of the downsides in a later post.

Mit den Titeln “Mein Leben mit Mitsu” und “Die Nächte mit Paul oder der Tag ist anderswo” bringt der Verlag Muto One Bücher auf das iPhone. Persönlich kenne ich Marcel Magis “Mitsu” als gedrucktes Buch, bin ein Fan des Werkes und habe mich bestens über seine Geschichten amüsiert.

Es ist ebenfalls kein Geheimnis, dass ich Marcel aus gemeinsamen Zeit bei der Mac Life, später bei macnews.de kenne und wir uns auch gelegentlich zu Gesprächen treffen. Ungeachtet dessen finde ich die Idee der Gründer Corinna Luedtke und Marcel Magis toll, dass iPhone mit unterhaltsamen Lesestoff zu versorgen …
