Wow! It has been a long time since I posted, so I guess I have a lot to catch up about.

During that time I started using Facebook more often as an immediate means of posting and getting feedback. Most of the time my posts are pretty benign. “Frank just got back from Sons of Italy.” “Frank had a great time at the Caffe Prada wine tasting.” Etc. But as soon as I get on the topic of the Gospel, some of my previously friendly “friends” turn negative.

One person wrote, “Cut this s*** out! This is a friendly site.” Others wrote, “Doctrines are invented by men.” Still others wrote, “That is just one point of view.” ‘So-and-so’ says this, ‘… .’” I respect their point of view, but I am actually not in the business of getting people to believe, but getting people to think. I even teach my high school classes, “In this class you will learn to think.” I won’t give them what to think, I will teach them the importance of thinking about what someone says, determining how much value it has to them and their lives.

Once again, I will endeavor to pass along something to think about. I post what is accepted Christian thought from the point of view of the early church, quoting early church sources and writings as my support. I may or may not have it in my posts, but I have the resources to share with all who ask. I am passing along information to think about. I welcome comments, but please think about and support what you think if you decide to comment beyond something appreciative. Please say what you like, but support what you say. That is just good etiquette.

I have written before on the excitement in the Apostle Paul’s voice as he announces to the world what God has done for humanity through Jesus Christ. In Ephesians 1 the excitement is palpable. We are blesses with every heavenly blessing in Jesus Christ. We have been adopted into the eternal relationship shared by the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Most importantly, this was predestined by the Father before there was a creation. Yet, as it says in John 1, men (read people, not just males) prefer the darkness to the light of the freedom given to us by Jesus.

I get to counsel a lot of people because I am a pastor. I hear the stories of mean things that people say about other people. It is hurtful. So my advice to them is to view what these people are saying as a gift, a gift you DON’T have to accept. What God is offering us is also a gift that we have the choice to accept or refuse. But here’s the kicker, refusing the gift doesn’t change it’s existence.

The draw of God is real. Maybe you don’t think so, but it is. Every time you feel compassion for someone, that is the love of God pouring through you. Every time you feel joy, that is the joy of God pouring through you. Every time you connect with someone, that is the relationship of God pouring through you.

While some researchers believe that our emotions come about as a result of the hypothalamus, the limbic system in our brains, there is no agreement as to how or why it works. What differences in operation of that system define love from anger from fear? What we do know is that we have emotions. try as they might, scientists cannot find any clear reasons as to why?

So why is it so difficult to accept even the possibility that we have those emotions because they were given to us by a loving creator? Why is it easy to take either the religious point of view of God as little more than an emotionless bean counter recording all the things we do in our lives so that he can later exact revenge, or scientific point of view which believes God as a creation of man? I believe it is because accepting God for who he is, and that he really is in control, and that he really does have a plan that includes us is so much harder.

Religion is easy because it gives us a list of things to do or don’t do, believe and not believe. Science is easy because it tries to eliminate the very existence of God by facts and reasons and rationale even though there is so much that is scientifically unprovable.

Both leave us empty with doubts and fears that our existence is purposeless. We are at the whim of either an apathetic God who has to be convinced to love us or an apathetic science that explains the whats of life without explaining the whys. Both cause us to question our current existence much less our future.

The God Paul is telling us about is not emotionless and not apathetic. He is so determined to bring us to him and reveal to us the life we were supposed to have all along that he did something outrageous in the annals of religion, he became us. He lived as one of us, suffered as one of us, stressed as one of us, cried as one of us and ultimately died as one of us. He did it to reveal that the God we don’t know, one Paul told the Athenians was “the unknown God” (Acts 17), has had a plan for us that includes all his greatest blessings like unfettered love without doubts, freedom from all threats and worries and a purposeful life eternal creating and discovering as mankind has never done before.

This is not universalism because some, even some reading this post, doubt that God wants this and has always wanted this for us. To the critics I’ll say this, in the long run my details might be off, but will be solely because I cannot fully comprehend “every blessing from heaven” as God has designed this. Because of doubt some will actually refuse this amazing gift from the God who loves them. Some of you right now question what I am saying. That is your right. God has given you the ability to accept or reject this gift. But it doesn’t change the reality of the gift. The gift is there. It’s yours. No one can take it away from you, but you can reject it.

Repentance in the Bible is the word “metanoia” which means to change your mind. God is asking you to change you mind about him about the gift he is offering you. He is calling you to believe the adoption he has done for you. To accept his love and purpose for you. To accept the freedom and peace only he can give you. You can resist, but that would be foolish.

It seems to me that yet again we are being ripped off in the UK, Tax and product differences can not be the reason for such a price hype.
What do you all think?

I’m currently typing this on my Linux-based netbook, but my home desktop experience is now mos

I’m currently typing this on my Linux-based netbook, but my home desktop experience is now mostly a Mac affair. I’ve really enjoyed it so far, so I thought I would talk about what programs have really made me happy with the whole experience.

First off, the entire setup process was super easy. With Windows and Linux, I’m used to at least two days of interface and program installation and tweaking. I simply plugged my mini in, turned it on, did my “mac dance” ritual during the opening video, went through the initial setup, and I was done in no more than ten minutes.

It also goes without saying how cool it is that they give you gobs of software for free with iLife. Even though the programs are not anything really special, they’re very useful and fun to use. I can’t wait to play with Garageband to eventually make a podcast.

With the money I saved by buying the mini on sale, I also purchased iWork. I haven’t really played with Numbers, but Keynote and Pages are great. It take a while to get used to the interface, but once you do it’s a pretty powerful office suite. Still no comparison to Microsoft Office, but still pretty darn good. It’s also nice that Helvetica is the default font is Pages. Now every paper I write looks like a Target ad.

I’ve also added some freeware I’ve always heard about to my Mac. Some good, and some not-so-great. First, I’ve always heard folks raving about Quicksilver, a application launcher that you use via the keyboard. This was almost my first freeware download on the Mac, and I found it fairly disappointing. I just find it quicker to get to my frequently used programs via the dock. I guess I just think more visually. I’ve never been really into keyboard shortcuts.

For NaNoWriMo, which I’m currently failing miseribly at, I tried several different programs. I finally settled on WriteRoom, since it has zero distractions from my writing. All it is is a black screen with green text. You simply type. Really cool. Only thing is that it’s a 30-day demo, with the full program costing $24.95. I understand paying for software that’s as good as this, but $24.95? For a black screen with green text? Give me a break. I probably won’t be purchasing this after the demo is over.

As for music players, it’s been kind of difficult. I’ve always hated iTunes, for either Windows or Mac, because of the almost communist nature of how it wants to control every aspect of your library and music player. So, I decided on trying Songbird. Songbird was pretty good for an open source program based off of Firefox, but it’s tragically lacking in podcasting support, and it also grabbed my entire music library and renamed every last file. Turns out automatic library management is turned on by default. Awesome idea, Songbird team! Good thing I had a backup! I have now switched back to iTunes for the moment, but I hope for something better to come along soon that allows for adding my music library that resides on my Linux server without fucking it up.

Other than those programs, I’ve also installed Celtx for future screenwriting, and the obligatory Firefox install.

Overall, my experience so far has been great. I feel that once I put more memory in this guy, it’ll be even better.

What have I been up to recently? Getting rid of my cable, thats what. Oh, I still watch plenty of TV, but I am no longer paying for cable. I now watch all my TV for free online.

Here is how I did it. Welcome to my new Mac Mini Media Center (M3C)!

First, I got myself a MacMini computer from Apple. It’s roughly a 7-inch square computer with a DVD player slot but without a monitor. My monitor is now my 42″ flat screen TV, connected via a DVI slot on the MacMini to one of the HDMI slots on the TV. I didn’t get any extra RAM or hard drive space so the basic bottom level MacMini seems to be enough. The basic level Mac Mini is $600. If your not a Mac person, this setup should work just as easily with a PC computer.

For controlling the computer, I have a wireless Mac keyboard and use the AirMouse app on my iTouch for the mouse. Keyboard was $69.

I still have an internet connection (can’t unload all the Comcast just yet) which allows me to access the world wide web and multiple websites where you can access free TV shows. I was able to cut my Comcast bill from $140 down to $70 (I still have internet and phone).

I can still watch local high-definion quality TV channels through a digital antenna that I got at Best Buy. There are multiple varieties of digital antennas so shop around for the the one that works best for where you live. I live fairly close to downtown Seattle and all the local TV broadcast stations, so an small indoor omni-directional antenna worked best for me. The antenna cost me roughly $50.

With Comcast, I also had a DVR cable box, but I was easily able to get DVR capability without a DVR cable box through the Elgato Eye TV 250 Plus TV tuner and video converter. This wonderful little deck of card-sized box not only performs the tuner function for your digital antenna, it also acts like a DVR recording shows to your Mac Mini. You can even search and set up season passes for your favorite shows much like you can on TiVo or Comcast DVRs and can easily remove commercials and convert shows to video formats for your iPod, Apple TV, or Quicktime player. You connect this tuner between your digital antenna and MacMini computer. This little device is worth every penny of its $189 price tag.

I also have a 1 TB external Western Digital hard drive attached via USB to my Mac Mini where I store all my movies, TV shows, & photos. Basically, all my media files are stored on this huge external hard drive instead of taking up space on the MacMini. I like the Western Digital hard drives, but you can pretty much any external hard drive if you want (or you can get a larger hard drive in you MacMini instead). Since I have had my hard drive for a while now, I am not including it in the price figures here, but memory is fairly cheap these days.

The last piece of the puzzle are all the websites where you can watch TV shows for free. For most ABC, NBC, and FOX TV shows, get yourself a HULU account and the HULU Desktop. HULU, by far, has the best setup as far as online TV sites. You can set up subscriptions of your favorite TV shows, choosing whether or not you want new and or repeat episodes and clips added to your queue. With the HULU desktop, you queue is easily accessible via an icon on your MacMini’s desktop/dock.

For CBS shows, got to TV.com. Their watch list isn’t very usable and there is no way to create a personalized queue of your favorite shows you want to watch like Hulu has, but it is fairly easy to find the full episodes from the previous week for watching.

HULU and TV.com also carry various recently cancelled and older TV series as well as current shows from cable channels such as the Comedy Channel, Bravo, A&E, F/X, and others.

For most shows, they will show up online or in your queue usually the next day. A few shows show up online a few days to a week later (House & V for example). And for some reason that Warner Brother produced shows on CBS have never really explained, The Mentalist, Big Bang Theory, & Criminal Minds are not offered online at TV.com at all. For me, that’s where the Elgato Eye TV tuner and recorder come in handy as I make sure to record those shows through that device instead of looking for them online.

For those TV shows that aren’t online at one of the above websites, I can usually find at CastTV.com. The quality isn’t that great as I don’t think it is really designed to watch these on your 42-inch flatscreen, but in a pinch, I can find and watch them here. This is where I end up watching Top Chef as it just doesn’t seem to be available on a weekly basis anywhere else.

I also like my college football & basketball and without cable I loose ESPN. However, ESPN has a wonderful website called ESPN 360, where you can watch live, streamed games online. With cable ESPN, I was only able to watch my GA Tech team every once in a while. However with ESPN 360, I have been able to watch GA Tech football every weekend. Even if I am busy on Saturday during the game, I can always come back a day or two later and watch the replay of the game. Love it!

Netflix now has movies that you can watch instantly online for free and you can rent movies immediately via iTunes so you won’t miss Comcast onDemand for your movies watching either.

So for about $950, I save about $70/month. That means I will pay off the investment in just over a year.

I honestly believe watching TV online is the future. The technology is getting easier and the availability of online content is only increasing. Now if I could just find a better provided of internet, then I can get rid of Comcast completely.

Resource: This post on The Unofficial Apple Weblog and this article at MacLife Magazine were extremely useful to me in learning about TV watching online and setting it all up.

Do realise there is some irony or just plain oddness that the first post on this blog is actually about a new offering from Dell. But, this does touch on possibly the edge (of a start of a thought – possibly not very much more than that) of something that has been occuring to me of late. The thought is this – for me (and I hasten to add that I haven’t extensively used it as yet just dipped my toe in the water) if for some tasks I am increasingly in a browser environment in any event or just using a specific application to watch TV/listen to music etc then Windows 7 is probably good enough for me.

For my main machine that I essentially live in I can’t see that I would change from a Mac certainly at this time. But, if I wanted a machine for a specific purpose (netbook for picking up email on the go or to build a ‘good enough’ media centre) then I certainly could be seduced by some of the new offering from Dell and so on.

Anyway, the point of this post was to highlight the new Dell Zino HD which looks (at first sight at least) to be very much having the Mac Mini for lunch. I can buy a Dell Zino HD and add a terabyte drive and get it delivered for a little over £368. You can order an equivalent Mac Mini but anything approaching the Dell would cost at least twice that. I am not interested in a blu ray drive and many of the other options I could choose for the Dell but it is kind of nice that there at least there as choices (even if I largely disregard them).

Now, the odd 50 quid here or there is one thing but for something that I just want to use to watch TV episodes and the odd movie via my TV to literally less than half the cost that is surely something else.

Now, the caveat of this is that I haven’t used this machine and it may be terrible and nasty and horrible and plasticky and so on. But, do I care £400 plus enough about that?

Anyway, worth a look I think.

Now, this looks like a “bag of hurt”, does it?

O bicho ficou assim, adeus belo design by Apple.

Hey, just thought I’d start a blog for no particular reason. I just have a lot to talk about I guess. I suppose subjects will range from technology to politics to just stuff I find funny (may be NSFW). I guess it’s time for me to write my first blog entry!

Windows Vista.

This is sort of old but I’m a little curious as to why people still hate Microsoft’s Windows Vista. I first used Vista about a year ago at this time and it was fine. This was after SP 1 was released and I found it did everything XP did exceptionally well. I understand that when it was first released, Windows Vista had a lot of terrible flaws. However, with SP 1 and 2, most of them seem to be gone according to people who have been using Vista since it was released. But people still hate Vista. Why? It’s not nearly as bad as people make it out to be. It may seem unnecessary, yes after all it does exactly the same things XP does with really no no features, but is it still considered bad? If so, why?

(Note : I understand I probably won’t be getting many or any comments on this as it’s my first entry and I literally have no audience. Guess I’m just talking to myself. Oh well.)

I think everyone knows that there’s a new iMac now (they should have updated the iMac that ages ago). There’s also the new Mac mini (which also should have been updated ages ago). It’s the same price (I think), and it has more RAM, and a better processor. Here, just check out the specs yourself on Apple’s website. I even included the link to the Mac mini page. How nice is that?

Here we are. After many days of preparation (you will know what I mean in a moment), I am finally ready to embark on my wondrous adventure of learning to program for the iPhone. Lets start with a little insight into who I am. My name is Kyle Begeman, I am 20 years old and live in Florida. I am a college student, currently majoring in Computer Science and Software Engineering. I have a decent understanding of programming in C++ and that about describes me.

I am not a member of the Apple Cult and I do not worship the air that Steve Jobs breathes (at least not yet, I cant guarantee anything!), I just simply love Mac, for my own reasons. When the iPhone was first announced I was amazed. Lets face it, the device was damn sexy. My inner nerd screamed for joy and fainted. I wanted one, BUT, $600 was FAR too much. One year later and after the first price drop, the new 3G model was announced and price became reasonable, so I waited in line and became a proud owner of the iPhone 3G. It took a year, but I officially have become an iPhone Developer. I have no experience programming for Mac, let alone iPhone. I have a vague understanding of object-oriented programming on its own. So I have started this blog to follow my progress. Im sure there are thousands of these, but thats alright. I do this for the education and/or entertainment of others. If no one reads it, well then I can consider it a personal journal. I have signed up for the Apple Developer Program, downloaded the SDK, purchased books, and have been reading and watching tutorials to prepare and hit the ground running.

Not only will I be talking about my trials and tribunes of learning to develop for the iPhone, I will be providing tips and tutorials (as I learn), give details on the many tasks involved with Apple’s Developer Connection, and any other information I can give to help educate any other startup developers! Don’t be surprised if once in awhile some random post appears about anything tech. Im a true geek, so its bound to happen.

I have a YouTube page (iPhoneDev4Me) so please subscribe. I am currently working on videos to be posted, they will be up in a week or so at most. Also follow me on twitter (iPhoneDev4Me). This name is universal, so it should be easy to remember!

Before I go, I must stress the fact that one of the most important things to me will be your feedback (assuming anyone is reading this).
