A good few months ago now, my laptop went to sleep and never woke up
again. My reliable, pre-Vista Vaio was no longer with me, and I thought
with some dread and fascination about crossing over to the white side,
Edenic commodity fetishism and all.

However I've been lucky enough to do this by baby steps, effectively
putting off the decision indefinitely by borrowing a friend's old,
discarded Mac. No need to make definitive decisions involving what
feels like learning another language, and paying through the
(shiny white/ matt aluminium) nose for it to boot.
I can procrastinate with a free trial first.

What's been so surprising about this is how pleasant it has been to
borrow a friend's discarded mental environment. I don't mean the
nosey impulse to comb through her hard drive: there is nothing there
and I don't want there to be. But it's oddly comforting to inherit
a screensaver image (which I haven't changed, even though I find it
hard on the eyes), a search history, a few oddments of music and an
eclectic set of favourite weblinks, organised into intriguing
subheadings (Public Space/ rainbow/ Speech/ paris/ difference engine).
It reminds me of swapping shoes with my best friend for the day when
I was a kid.

Yesterday I discussed how communities and organizations are often seen as having human characteristi

Yesterday I discussed how communities and organizations are often seen as having human characteristics. I also suggested an exercise for your staff meeting to discuss what your organization would look like as a person.

The primary reason for the exercise is to gauge how your employees perceive your organization. It could also be used to determine how your customers or the community in general perceives your organization. The point is not so much how your organization is perceived as it is whether different groups see the organization in the same way. For example, let’s say that your organization had 30 offices. Going through this exercise in every office would be valuable because it would reveal whether different offices see the organization in the same. If one office describes the organization as an old lady, and another described it as a young man then clearly there is something going on. In this case the exercise reveals that the organization apparently has an internal communication problem. And that’s the punchline: this exercise is one way to measure your communication effectiveness. If different offices or divisions perceive the company or organization differently, then that is valuable information to know. Of course, if your organization is a clandestine spy agency you probably want each division to perceive the organization in a different way.

Tomorrow, I’ll tell you what happened when I divided a community leadership class into groups of white males, non-white males, white females and non-white females and then had them describe their community as a person.

NOTE: My next column in the Mississippi Business Journal will contain more on this subject. Until tomorrow – and Vol. 3.

Video Intro:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EMo6o0BtFG8

—

Back in the day, last month, the other day or last night, you and a friend probably had to come to an agreement. Who’s going to “talk to” the friend? For men, the guy that talks to the friend is called the “wingman.” I have no idea if there is an equivalent for women. Regardless, if there is or isn’t, decisions have to made. Some times they have to be made on a moment’s notice with little or no information.

Upon first glance, it may appear that the “wing” (man or woman) is getting a raw deal. But, there are a lot factors like individual tastes, needs, number of drinks, lighting, etc., that can flip things all around. The same can be said about buying technology products or services. Everything isn’t for everybody. You need to know what everything means, what your preferences are and what’s really important in the long run.

Here are a few quick morsels to munch on, some new and some refreshers:

Internet Speed: Megabytes per second (MBps) and Megabits per second (Mbps) aren’t the same. It will take 8 Megabits (Mb) to equal 1 Megabyte (MB). Hard drives and RAM are sold in MB’s but your internet speed is sold in Mb’s (per second). Nowadays, shoot for at least 5 Mbps (download).

TV: Which is better cable or satellite? There’s no clear winner. As I have said before, it depends on your preferences. Each has it’s pros and cons.

Plasma or LCD: First consider the size you would like. Plasmas usually don’t go lower than 37″ and LCD’s usually get relatively expensive above 50″. Then, consider your budget. If your budget and size requirements fall into the overlap between the LCD & plasma, you now need to consider the type of room it will be in and what you will be using it for.

720p or 1080p: Yes, 1080p is “better” than 720p. However, 720p produces a great picture. 1080p is much more common since I wrote “Should You Potty Train Your New HDTV?” If it is an option, you can get a great deal on a great HDTV.

iPhone or BlackBerry: If you hate AT&T, the decision is easy. The iPhone is only on AT&T. So, the iPhone is out. Otherwise, go play with an iPhone and see if you can handle not having a physical keyboard. If it’s for business, talk to your company’s IT department (that could be you) and see which do they support.

Palm Pre: The Pre is Palm’s last ditch effort to become relevant again in the smartphone game. The Treo had a good run but Palm rode that horse too long. They got squashed by the iPhone and BlackBerry. Fortunately, Palm finally came back strong! It’s only on Sprint but it’s worth a look.

Netbooks: “Netbook” is nothing but a marketing term. It’s still a computer, a small computer. Just like a golf cart is just a small car. A golf cart can get you around but it’s not built for heavy lifting or being you primary vehicle. You make significant sacrifices. The same applies for netbooks.

Megapixels: If “netbook” is a marketing term, “megapixels” is a marketing campaign. Do you remember what I said about megapixels?

Mac or Windows: I’ll make this simple. Go with what you’re comfortable with. If you know nothing about computers, go with a Mac. If you know what you’re doing or have IT support, go with Windows. Generally, Mac for Home. Windows for work.

Coke or Pepsi: I don’t drink soda so I can’t help you on this one.

“A hug is a great gift – one size fits all, and it’s easy to exchange.”

Are you a Mac or a PC?

Hello I'm a Mac ... and I'm a PC

After years of using a PC, last December I received my first iMac. A 24″ screen, amazing images, simplicity in use…what’s not to love? I’ve talked to a few people about this topic and it seems that a large number of computer users prefer the PC. My question is “WHY?” I am not one to talk negatively about the PC, although I have had several horrible encounters with them, but I really want to know what it is that people like more about PCs than Macs.

When I enrolled in Full Sail’s Internet Marketing program, I received my first MacBook Pro. This is again amazing! The entire experience is seamless compared to working with my previous Dell.

So far the only “negative” experience I’ve had with my Mac is that it does not support all software. However, for every piece of PC software I’ve found, I have been able to find an equivalent, although usually better, version for the Mac.

I am also impressed with the iLife and iWork software packages that include:

iPhoto (What’s not to love about the seamless photo editing program? Plus it gives you the ability to make great photo books and calendars)

iMovie

Garage Band

iWeb – Tell me what Windows program is just as good as iWeb…

iDVD

Pages – The templates are incredible

Numbers – Far easier than Excel

Keynote – Ever watched a Keynote and then a Powerpoint? Then you’ll understand that Keynote is almost incomparable to Powerpoint.

With all of these fantastic Apple applications, the ease of use and the amazing graphics, why would someone prefer a PC over a Mac?

First off, many know Asus as the official leader in the Netbook craze, but Asus has been working on

First off, many know Asus as the official leader in the Netbook craze, but Asus has been working on more than just tiny under-powered laptops. In the past year, Asus has released many full “work-station” desktops, such as the Eee Box PC. Now, Asus has been working on an “All-in-One”, compared to Apple’s iMac, the Sony Vaio, or the HP Touchsmart. Now I can’t tell you my own personal review of the Asus EeeTop ET1602, but I have done my research and I tink I have found a consensus.

The Asus Eee Top ET1602 [pictured above] is a regular “All-in-One”, which means all of the computers components, drives, etc are all under/behind the LCD display. It features a smaller 15.4inch LCD, with the newer Intel Atom processor, NO disk drive (Although an external peripheral is allowed), 1GB RAM, 160GB HDD, 802.11 WiFi, Intel based graphics, and Windows XP Home. The Asus Eee Top ET1602 does house a touch screen, with an addition of a Linux based swappable OS.

A lot of hype is being put out on this lower budget $600 Asus, comparing it to the HP, Acer, etc. One thing I oppose of is:

As most of you know, on December 23, 2008 I bought my first Macintosh computer (With the exceptions

As most of you know, on December 23, 2008 I bought my first Macintosh computer (With the exceptions of my first PowerBook100), the PowerMac G5 for a low $300. Here is the run-down of the what I have come to find so far on purchasing an older model than going new.

Specs on G5: 1.6PPC G5, 1.5GB RAM, 80GB HDD, OS X 10.5.6

First off, one big reason most people hold off on switching to a Mac is because of its price tag. This is 100% TRUE, especially if you don’t have a away of earning a pretty paycheck. I had my eye set on either a Mac Mini, iMac, or MacBook for the longest time. I just didnt have $1,000 to spit out. I started looking into used Macs that are reasonably priced in my range. I didn’t have much luck finding anything but a PowerMac G4, which isn’t bad; just keep reading. I never looked into the G5 machine because they were mostly never below $500. One thing you may want to do for your first Mac is this; buy used/older models. When I came along a random post on my local Craigslist for a PowerMac G5 for $300, I knew I found my “baby”.

Second, you are going to have to look at it this way: With an older machine, comes a lack of support. I have been luckily saved by the cut-back on Apple not supporting Power PC anymore. This really gets me to my second point. Apple will only keep on updating their hardware/software. I know that most newer software such as iLife only will run on the new Intel based Macs. Leopard, still luckily can support a PowerPC Chip (867MHz+), but many still fear the new release of Snow Leopard, and any other new OS/software, will only run on Intel based machines.

“PowerPC processors are going to be left in the dust. They are holding back on what develpoers are trying to do; advance Apple OS even more.” Alex Singer / http://www.imactherforeiam.co.nr

So even though you won’t always be covered, there is a vast amount of software titles that have no issue, such as Microsoft Office.

So this concludes Post #1 of “Buying Older Macintosh Computers”. I will try and get Part Two up ASAP. It will include my advice, Pros&Cons, and a basic review of my G5.

Now lets get this started simple. Apple. MacWorld. Disipointment? Hold on, Apple fans were come by with a wicked slap in the face when Apple showed no new hardware changes, other than the expected MBP 17″. I know this, Apple can’t afford to ” WOW” you every single year with new products like Aluminum Macbooks, or an iPhone 3G.

The Mac Mini was one thing I really hoped Apple would boast a move on. Here is some background info on the Mini: Released in 2005, with a G4 RISK Chip, later upgraded to Intel based in 2007. Since then, we have not seen an update. Last time I checked that would be 4 years (about).

Some things I think Apple might put into the Mac Mini (If ever bumped):

Aluminum Casing

Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0GHz+ or Intel Atom processor

Standard: 250GB HDD / 128GB SSD option w/ 2GB RAM

Standard: SuperDrive

Price: Starts @ $699 (Although $599 ROCKS)

BYOKM Comes w/ keyboard and mouse

PCI expansion capable

So, those are just some of my wishes for the Mac Mini. Then again, Apple may forget about it, drop it or never bother upgrade it. What are your opinions on a new Mac Mini? Drop a comment!

As of today (1/21), Apple upgraded the Polycarbonate plastic Macbook in a very hush-hush matter. According to MacRumors.com, Apple bumped up some of the specs (Don’t worry, its still at $999)

These upgrades include:

Processor moved to 2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo with 1066 MHz frontside bus from 2.1 GHz Core 2 Duo with 866 MHz bus (Thus creating a faster chip)

Standard RAM increased to 2 GB (two 1 GB sticks) from 1 GB (two 512 MB sticks) (THANKS APPLE!)

Graphics switched to NVIDIA 9400M with 256 MB of shared memory from Intel GMA X3100 with 144 MB of shared memory (SWeeT)

Bluetooth version updated to 2.1 from 2.0.

320 GB, 5400-rpm hard drive option added (big Woop)

So, although not officially announced, anything is better when moving forward. Does this mean Apple is doing some quiet work over in CA?

I just downloaded the new LimeWire software. It’s pretty cool actually. It’s a peer to peer file sharing application that really picks up where Napster left off and it does not hammer you with ads.

This file sharing network quickly replaced the famous old Napster after it has been shut down and is now more popular than ever..

The new cleaned up Java interface in version 4.1 of Limewire looks way better than earlier versions. You know it’s made for the business of exchanging files and nothing distracts from that goal.

Because it is written in Java it can be used on any Operating System where java can be installed. That includes Windows, Mac OS, Linux, Unix and Solaris.

This has also disadvantages. It needs Java to run. That means you should take care that you always have the latest version of Java installed on your computer and it’s quite “resource heavy”.

Another reason for it’s success might be, that it doesn’t tackle you with ad-ware, nag-ware or hurting colors. It just convinces with a clear and transparent surface for searching, downloading, browsing and collecting files.

Pick up your copy here: http://www.limewire.com/ Post your comments on your rating of the new application.

We’ve all seen the Apple commercials. They are a constant reminder of the problems of Windows

We’ve all seen the Apple commercials. They are a constant reminder of the problems of Windows Vista and the near perfection of Mac OS X. Every once and awhile I will find my self wondering whether, when the time comes, I should switch to Mac or buy a nice new Dell for college. The only way that I can make this decision is to compare the two in-depth. So, I thought, why not put it in a blog for others to use?

First let’s let at some accomplishments:

Microsoft: Introduced the world-renowned Microsoft Office Suite

Dominates its industry with the Windows operating system

                   Highly successful in software production

Apple: Produced the popular ipod; out sells any other mp3 player

Produced the OS X Operating System

                    Originally produced its own hardware

                    Exclusively builds its own systems

Now to the reviews:

Subject A: Windows Vista

When booting up a Vista based PC for the first time, it is lightning fast. However, within little time of use the performance deteriorates. The operating system is a serious memory guzzler. Even worse, its security features are annoying, and to an certain extent, nagging. Vista’s User Account Control is so ’secure’ that it asks you for permission to do pretty much anything. Due this factor, I’ve had it disabled. This makes me less confident in Vista’s built in security. Vista’s default theme, as nice as it may look, uses up so much memory (RAM) that it isn’t even worth having. It is a major negative to be forced to sacrifice an enjoyable feature because it slows the system. Even with the recent release of Service Pack 1, there was not a major performance improvement. Is there much good in the stability of Vista? I think not.

Vista comes with many more features than its predecessor, XP, did. The first major upgrade is Internet Explorer 7. However, it is much less stable and a whole lot slower than many other alternatives that are out there. Vista comes with a nice new interface named Aero and includes window translucency (“glass”), transitions and a 3D view of windows (“Flip 3D”); all features that OS X has had for some time. Another feature that comes built in is Windows Sidebar. It is very similar to OS X’s dock and allows users to add ‘gadgets’ for many uses and can place them on the desktop. Sidebar, on the downside, seems to be yet another memory guzzler. The good in Vista is the upgrade of many of Microsoft’s applications. Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player, Notepad, Mail, Paint, and Movie Maker have all been upgraded. Some new features, including ‘Snipping Tool’, which allows the creation of screen captures, Photo Gallery, and a variety of new games have been added.

Many older devices (such as printers, scanners, etc.) are not compatible with the new operating system.

Overall: Poor performance equals a major negative. (-) Some features already exist within Mac OS X. (-) Major incompatibilities (-) Upgraded features and software; nice new design. (+)

Subject B: Mac OS X Leopard

On the same configuration (equal memory, processor speed, etc.), the performance and stability of OS X Leopard leaves Vista in the dust. Vista even performs better when run on its rival. While Vista takes 35-40 seconds to boot in some cases, Leopard only takes 28-29 seconds to boot. OS X is good with multi tasking, while Vista is very poor in this case.

The biggest improvement of OS X is the addition of more than 300 features. This includes boot camp, which allows users to run Windows on Mac. This is a major plus for Windows users that have the money and desire to use a Mac at the same time. The system is very well designed and is a great improvement and includes a redesigned, 3D, dock.

Just as Vista includes a built in web browser, Apple includes its own. Safari, as it is titled, is much faster than Internet Explorer and is, at current ratings, the fastest web browser in the world. It can also be installed on the Windows Operating System. Leopard’s application, Spaces, allows users to have and switch between multiple desktops. This adds to the operating system’s multitasking capabilities.

It has been quite a difficulty for me to discover many negative traits of the OS.

Overall: Great design (+) Fast web browser (+) Great for multitasking (+) 300+ New Features (+) Windows able (+)

From what I’ve found, my decision would easily sway towards a Mac. However, it is possible to sit here and list many more positive and negative features of the two. I do not expect this to be all of the reviewable pieces, but it is a collection of many major items.
