Come molti sanno, installare Apple Mac OS X (Macintosh) su un normale computer con Microsoft Windows non è un’impresa da poco, infatti la Apple ha fatto in modo che il suo sistema operativo funzionasse solo su i suoi computer. Da un pò di tempo alcuni programmatori hanno creato delle versioni di Mac OS X Leopard (e Tiger) con driver particolari in modo che il sistema funzionasse sulla maggior parte dei computer “normali” facilitando di molto l’installazione. Queste versioni sono a decine, tra cui, le più conosciute iDeneb, iATKOS e Kalyway. In questa guida vedremo come installare iDeneb creato da programmatori italiani il quale ha anche un ottimo forum in italiano (iHackintosh Reload Forum) a disposizione per tutti i problemi che avremo durante l’installazione (non per scoraggiarvi ma sono tantissimi!):

Mac OS X Leopard

1. Scaricate iDeneb dalle reti torrent (µTorrent) o con eMule, qui potete vedere le varie versioni;
2. Masterizzate il file immagine ISO scaricato su un DVD con Nero o simili ad una velocità di 2X o 4X per evitare errori durante la scrittura ed eseguite la verifica dei dati;
3. Avviate l’installazione e fate click su Utility Disco nel menu Utility e formattate la partizione in cui dovete installare Mac OS X scegliendo HFS+ (Journaled) nel menu a tendina;
4. Attendete che termini la formattazione e proseguite con l’installazione guidata;
5. A fine installazione riavviate il computer e configuratelo.

Attenzione: Installare Mac OS X su dispositivi non Apple è considerata una procedura illegale!

Per installarlo bastano questi 5 passaggi, se siete fortunati avete finito altrimenti se avete problemi chiedete al forum di iDeneb, iHackintosh Reload Forum. Io per configurare tutto sul mio notebook ci ho messo una settimana e più ma è possibbile che a voi vada meglio, buona fortuna!

Segundo a Net Applications, o Windows 7 já faz mais acessos à internet que Linux e Mac OS Snow Leopard juntos.

Apenas duas semanas depois de começar a ser vendido no varejo, o Windows 7 já é o quarto sistema operacional mais usado para acesso à internet. Fica atrás do XP, do Vista e do Mac OS X 10.5. Nas contas da Net Applications, 2,15% dos acessos à internet são feitos por Windows 7. É mais do que a soma das participações do Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard (1,17%) e de todas as distribuições do Linux juntas (0,96%).

As estimativas são desta sexta-feira, 6 de novembro. A empresa chega a elas medindo o número de acessos a sites da internet feitos por cada sistema operacional. O método tem suas falhas, é claro. Mas dá uma idéia do que está acontecendo no mercado. O Snow Leopard já está disponível há mais de dois meses. Mas, como era fácil prever, foi deixado para trás pelo Windows 7 em apenas duas semanas.

Um outro estudo, da empresa NPD, aponta que, nos Estados Unidos, as vendas de Windows 7 nos primeiros dias após o lançamento foram 234% superiores às do Windows Vista. Para conseguir esse extraordinário volume de vendas, a Microsoft e seus parceiros fizeram muitas promoções nos Estados Unidos e em outros países.

No Brasil, suponho que as vendas não tenham sido tão extraordinárias assim. Afinal, praticamente não houve promoções de lançamento no país e os preços aqui estão bastante mais altos que nos Estados Unidos.

Mac OS X (lê-se Mac OS dez, e não Mac OS xis) é um sistema operacional proprietário, desenvolvido, fabricado e vendido pela empresa estadunidense Apple, destinado aos computadores da linha Macintosh e que combina a experiência adquirida com a tradicional GUI desenvolvida para as versões anteriores do Mac OS com um estável e comprovado kernel. A última versão do Mac OS X possui certificação UNIX.

Assim, o Mac OS X, lançado inicialmente pela Apple em 2001, é uma combinação do Darwin (um kernel derivado do microkernel Mach) com uma renovada GUI chamada Aqua. As primeiras versões do Mach (não-microkernel) foram derivadas do BSD.

O Mac OS X apresenta uma grande mudança em relação aos sistemas operacionais anteriores do Macintosh e o código que é a base do sistema é completamente diferente do de versões anteriores. Apesar da maioria das alterações estarem nos “bastidores” do sistema operacional, a interface gráfica de usuário Aqua é o novo recurso mais visível. O uso de bordas arredondadas, cores translúcidas e outros adereços trouxe mais cores e texturas às janelas e controles do Desktop do que a interface Platinum do OS 9. Inicialmente isso gerou bastante controvérsia entre os usuários, com uns alegando que a interface tinha ficado “como um brinquedo” e com falta de profissionalismo; outros alegando que era “outra grande inovação da Apple”. O visual é instantaneamente reconhecível e antes mesmo do lançamento da primeira versão do Mac OS X, outros desenvolvedores começaram a produzir skins para aplicativos personalizáveis como o Winamp para ficarem mais parecidos com o visual Aqua. A Apple ameaçou processar pessoas que fazem ou distribuem programas que oferecem uma interface que eles dizem ser derivada de seu design patenteado.

O núcleo do Mac OS X é um sistema operacional certificado Unix, construído em torno de um kernel XNU com recursos básicos Unix acessáveis através de uma interface de linha de comando. Pouco antes do lançamento do Mac OS X a Apple lançou esse núcleo como Darwin. Baseando-se nesse núcleo, a Apple projetou e desenvolveu um número de componentes de código fechado (cloused source) de licença proprietária, incluindo a interface Aqua e o Finder (o sistema de gerenciamento de arquivos). A combinação da interface amigável e o poder do núcleo open source Darwin/BSD tornaram o Mac OS X o ambiente Unix mais bem vendido até hoje em número de computadores vendidos.

La compañía anunció que pondrá a la venta su nuevo sistema operativo, antes que el de su competencia.

La última generación en sistemas operativos de Apple, el Mac OS X Snow Leopard, estará disponible en el mercado este viernes 28 de agosto, según anunció la compañía de computadoras.

Y pese a que el Snow Leopard pretendía salir a la venta en septiembre, éste se adelantará por lo menos una semana de lo previsto.

El Snow Leopard viene a actualizar la última versión en sistemas operativos, el Mac OS X Leopard.

“Snow Leopard se apoya en el sistema operativo de más éxito en nuestra historia y estamos contentos de poder ofrecerlo a los usuarios antes de lo previsto”, afirmó Apple.

Cabe destacar que el Snow Leopard es lanzado antes de su rival, el Windows 7 de Microsoft, que aparecerá en el mercado en octubre.

Mientras, las características de este nuevo sistema operativo, según Genbeta, son:

Framework multi-touch: Es una nueva librería para aprovechar las características multi-touch del sistema. Apple prevé que todos los portátiles tengan un trackpad multitouch tarde o temprano, por lo que la marca se estaría adelantando al mercado.
Herramientas de ayuda en textos: Se ven mejoras en el corrector ortográfico, además de entregar nuevas funcionalidades de inserción de abreviaturas, de autocorrección de palabras mal formadas y mejora en la redacción de escritos.

Auto-Activación de fuentes: Las fuentes se extraerán del sistema de forma automatizada como ya ocurre en algunas aplicaciones del actual Leopard.

Soporte a ZFS: el formato de archivos ZFS de Sun estará soportado en Snow Leopard, tanto en lectura (como está soportado en Leopard) como en escritura

Did you know that you can zoom  in or out while you are viewing a image or PDF using Quick Look?

To zoom in on an image press and hold the alt key while clicking anywhere in the image. You can now move the image around in the Quick Look window.

To zoom out, you just have to press and hold the alt an the shift key while clicking anywhere in the image you are previewing.

To zoom in on a PDF, press command, shift and “+” (plus character). To zoom back out again press command and “-” (minus character).

These zooming functions are really useful when you are viewing large images or if you have a small screen.

Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard is Apple’s first major operating system upgrade since Tiger more than two years ago. The changes include more than 300 new features, which, while not earth-shattering, further streamline the experience of using a Mac.

Should you pay for Leopard? If you’re happy with the way Tiger works, then maybe not. If you need Bootcamp, however, then you must have Leopard. And if you’re considering the purchase of a new computer, Leopard makes Macs more enticing than Tiger did. Plus, Leopard makes it far easier to find documents and applications than Windows Vista. Leopard’s interface niceties made the daily mechanics of using the computer more pleasurable. Mundane chores, such as finding files and backing up data, become a visual treat.

Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard costs $129 out of the box, or $199 for up to five users. Those who bought Macs after October 1 must pay $9.95 to have Leopard shipped to them.

Setup and installation
It took about 40 minutes to install Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard on an Intel-based MacBook. That’s a bit longer than it took to install than Windows Vista, but not by much. However, installation doesn’t run so smoothly on some systems. Leopard took a painfully long hour or so to install on an iBook G4, the 933 Mhz processor just grazing the minimum requirements.

You should proceed carefully when migrating the files and applications you’ll need. Apple steps you through the process, but take your time to avoid overwriting valuable data. Leopard changed the personal desktop image during one migration from Tiger, while leaving the desktop photo alone in other cases. After installing Leopard on MacBook Pro 2.33 Core 2 Duo with 2GB of RAM, there were problems with various applications, including Parallels and GroupCal.

Leopard ran bug-free on a 2Ghz Core 2 Duo Macbook. Some users, however, reported the fabled "blue screen of death" historically associated with Microsoft Windows; Apple addressed the issue.

To run Leopard, you’ll need an Intel or PowerPC G5 Mac. A PowerPC-based G4 Mac with an 867MHz or better processor will work, as well. Apple suggests having 512MB of RAM. Additionally, you’ll need a USB or FireWire external backup drive (or a file-sharing volume on a network) to use Time Machine. Features on iChat require a Webcam.

Interface
The new look and feel of Leopard is different without demanding that you relearn the layout. The Dock organizing applications and files becomes a bit more transparent. Bump it over to one side, and the Dock looks a bit flatter. A drop shadow now highlights the active window, and all windows share a unified visual design.

Click on an icon on the Dock and related items fan out in the order you last accessed them. New Stacks help to unclutter your desktop by showing icons of items in the order they were last accessed. This is especially helpful for keeping downloads in one place, although you can’t resize the icons. If the Stack is packed with items, you can display them as a grid.

The souped-up Finder introduces a sidebar that allows you to rearrange items in the Places section, while Search For submenus can locate files based on type and when you last worked on them. Click on Today, for instance, and you’ll see everything you’ve touched lately in chronological order. If you work on a network, checking out another person’s desktop starts with the simple Share Screen option.

Spotlight scours through files in shared folders on a network, as well as within Safari’s Web History (which you should regularly dump to fend off snoops). It gets smarter, reading "Not" and "Or," dates and phrases, and even serving as a calculator for trig equations.

Many new design elements reflect what you’ve already seen in iTunes and iPhone. Cover Flow, for instance, shuffles through folders as you hold down an arrow key. This makes perfect sense for browsing files. Plus, you can peek at most documents instantly. Quick Look provides previews that can pop up files from iWork, iLife, Microsoft Office, PDFs, as well as popular image and video formats. In each instance appear relevant options, such as Full Screen view or Add to iPhoto. Select several files, double-click them, and you’ve got a custom slide show.

In addition to making it easier to find your work, interface additions are intended to make multitasking less stressful. Virtual desktops, called Spaces, cluster open windows into categories or boxes. This can cut the number of windows you may otherwise stack around your desktop, especially helpful for tiny monitors. For example, you could move everything you need to edit a vacation video into one space, and in another Space place the files and apps needed to write a dissertation. Spaces were a cinch to set up (such as drawing a chart in a word processor), but a tad awkward for us to master until we learned the keyboard shortcuts. You can also use the mouse to drag items between Spaces, and to drag the Spaces themselves around.

If you rarely back up your work because the process is too boring or confusing, Time Machine is likely to change that. The spaced-out interface is about as sexy as backup can get, displaying a dynamic timeline alongside snapshots of selected folders and files throughout their history. To restore a file you lost, just go to an earlier time, click the Restore button, and you’ll zoom back to your present Desktop. For a current period of 24 hours, Time Machine backs up automatically every hour. It backs up each day for the past month and each week for content updated earlier than that.

Time Machine immediately detected our external hard drive via two USB ports and we started backing up within a few minutes. You cannot back up to your Mac’s hard drive. You can check out the drives of fellow Leopard users with Time Machine, too. However, Apple doesn’t offer password-protection and encryption options upfront showing you how to lock that drive from curious outsiders. Only longtime Mac users are likely to know to explore such options within Leopard’s Security settings.

iChat lets you and Leopard-using buddies share files and control each others’ desktops, expanding the tool’s potential professional use. And you can record iChat sessions as AAC audio or MPEG video files ready for an iPod, which is a great feature for podcasters.

iChat Theater’s silly effects can distort your face like you’re looking in a fun-house mirror. Green-screen backgrounds within iChat Theater let your talking head appear in a video conference in front of, say, included images of the moon or your own pictures. (We still wish the "Star Wars R2D2" theme were included.) Other chat buddies can see these, whether they’re using an older iteration of OS X or they’re using AIM on a Windows PC. iChat enables you to share files as you gab via video, so you and a friend can watch the same movie clip or flip through the same PowerPoint presentation. Photo Booth integrates with iChat, letting you record videos and show off full-screen slide shows.

Mac’s new Mail application integrates rich note-taking into e-mail. These notes can serve as scrapbooks containing images. Some 32 e-mail templates enable you to drop in pictures and resize them with a built-in photo browser. Mail’s RSS feeds tie into those in Safari. The e-mail application also detects addresses for mapping via Google, as well as contacts for a quick save. Natural language capabilities, similar to those within Gmail, recognize phrases such as "next Saturday" for scheduling. Changes are synchronized between Mail and iCal. Setting up Mail is less complicated than Outlook, and it works with accounts from 27 services, including Yahoo, AOL, and Gmail.

Finally, the Safari browser default is tabbed without making you turn on the feature. Safari’s cool new Web Clips tool lets you turn any snippet from a Web page into a widget for your Dashboard. Potential plug-ins from third parties that would be nice to have already include the Web Clips feature for the popular Mozilla Firefox browser.

Leopard offers many tie-ins to Web-based content (see the Webware video). Among them is Wikipedia as a new companion to the Dictionary. Although you can access the open-source encyclopedia from the Desktop, no entries are saved locally.

Geotagging is a cool addition to Leopard, enabling you to tie photos to latitude and longitude through built-in GPS on digital cameras so you can put picture galleries on a map.

Leopard offers 17 new features. There’s support for Braille output devices as well as contracted and non-contracted Braille. It’s the first operating system that can use a Braille display during installation. VoiceOver makes it easier to jump to sections on a Web page, and its preferences can be transported to other Macs. However, for people with repetitive stress injuries, Leopard supports voice-activated commands only–not dictation.

There are updates to less glamorous elements such as Automator and Dashcode, and Network Preferences has been streamlined. Developers can enjoy full 64-bit support, and get to tinker with fun extras, which we wish were integrated already within iChat Theater. ColorSync reads EXIF sRGB data from cameras, and there’s support for connecting more cameras via cable or Wi-Fi, and for other gadgets via Bluetooth.

Security
More firewall controls are among several security enhancements to Leopard. Yet the firewall isn’t turned on by default, and we consider it vulnerable to outside threats. To fend off Trojans and spoofing attempts, you’ll be grilled more when downloading materials. A mechanism called Sandboxing is supposed to prevent potential external threats from hijacking your applications. Parental controls are now featured more prominently in the System and offer content filters, time limits, and Internet activity loggers to keep tabs on young Web surfers.

Support options remain the same as in the Tiger version. You get 90 days of help free by telephone, as with other products from Apple. Phone support thereafter costs $49 per incident. Apple also tweaked the Help menus within OS X 10.5. These are arranged well, although they didn’t always provide an instant answer. Many items are better explained on Apple’s Web site via message boards, user forums, and a well-organized knowledge base.

Dopo diversi annunci relativi alle nuove versioni beta destinate agli sviluppatori, è stata rilasciata l’ultima versione dell’aggiornamento a Mac OS X 10.5.8. Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, è previsto per il mese di Settembre, questa potrebbe quindi essere l’ultima versione di Mac OS X Leopard.

Disponibile come di consueto mediante Aggiornamento Software (165 Mb) e a breve anche tramite download manuale (in versione standard e combo), l’aggiornamento è raccomandato da Apple a tutti gli utenti di Leopard.

Apple, indica che l’aggiornamento include correzioni generali del sistema operativo che ottimizzano la stabilità, compatibilità e sicurezza, e correzioni specifiche per:

• problemi di compatibilità e affidabilità durante l’accesso a network AirPort
• problema che potrebbe non far apparire alcune risoluzioni monitor in Preferenze di Sistema Display
• problemi che possono influenzare l’affidabilità di Bluetooth

A última geração do sistema operacional da Apple, que ganhou o nome de Mac OS X Snow Leopard, começará a ser vendida na próxima sexta-feira (28), anunciou hoje a empresa.

A fabricante dos computadores Mac e do popular smartphone iPhone já havia comunicado em junho o lançamento do Snow Leopard, que atualiza a atual versão do sistema operacional conhecido como Mac OS X Leopard.

Os usuários do Mac OS X Leopard poderão obter a última geração por US$ 29 nos Estados Unidos, acrescentou a Apple nesta segunda-feira.

“O Snow Leopard se apoia no sistema operacional de maior sucesso da nossa história e estamos contentes de poder oferecê-lo aos usuários antes do previsto”, disse Bertrand Serlet, vice-presidente sênior da Apple para engenharia de software.

A previsão inicial da companhia era de que o Snow Leopard começaria a ser vendido em setembro e não no final de agosto.

O novo sistema operacional da Apple chega ao mercado pouco antes de seu concorrente, o Windows 7, da Microsoft, que começará a ser vendido em outubro.

As ações da Apple reagiram hoje em leve alta na bolsa tecnológica Nasdaq, em Nova York. Por volta das 14h de Brasília, os títulos da empresa eram negociados a US$ 169,69, 0,2% a mais do que na abertura.

“Oh poor Google!”

When any discussion takes place around Microsoft and Yahoo teaming up in the search arena, the naïve press jump to the defence of Google. The better informed realise that such a tie up only materially impacts on the US market, and even that is questionable. In the US, Google has 77.54% market share versus a combined market share of Bing and Yahoo! of 20.36% (http://bit.ly/15iBz0). When Google has around 95% search market share in many European markets, such a tie up has no material impact what so ever.

So what strategic alliances/acquisitions do make a difference?

Cynically, Google’s Achilles heel is that the vast majority of its revenues come from AdWords. According to SEM Rush 80% of Adwords revenues come from 1.35% of advertisers (http://bit.ly/Pn6ui). When all their eggs are in one basket, the risk of such a business from a textbook perspective is incredibly high. However, with a market cap of $147.28bn at least they have some options to diversify!

Google’s strength is building user-friendly products, which are very economical on computers’ resources. Speed is king, and this ethos appears to lead the product development process. The same ethos is held by Apple Inc.  The Apple operating system (Mac OS X Leopard) is optimised for speed. Apple are the undisputed champions of UI and anyone who is fortunate enough to own an iPhone, knows what Apple can do to create a “game-changer”!

With Apple’s ability to build and monetise market leading hardware and Google’s ability to create market leading applications e.g. Email and Microsoft-bashing office products and not discounting their ability to capture significant advertising spend, is this a marriage made in heaven?

With Apple’s current market cap $151.59bn, greater than Google’s, only a merger is surely commercially possible. And if 1+1 does indeed equal 2, then the combined market cap would be approaching $300bn. If this were to happen then Microsoft (market cap of $217.51bn) would undoubtedly have a case for the monopolies commission to intervene.

Would the press be saying, “oh poor Microsoft”? Unlikely!
