Hi guys, Sam here and today I’m going to be showing you how to make your Windows Vista, 7 and

Hi guys, Sam here and today I’m going to be showing you how to make your Windows Vista, 7 and Windows 8 desktop look like the Mac OS X Mountain Lion desktop. So let’s get to it…

Step 1 – Changing the wallpaper theme

So first your going to want to go to the following link: http://www.noobslab.com/p/wallpapers.html and pick out and save to your Pictures library all the wallpapers that you want.

Step 2 – Downloading the Icons

Make a new folder in your Pictures library called ‘Icons’ (with out the speech marks). Next go to the following link: http://www.winmatrix.com/forums/index.php?/topic/15732-download-mac-os-x-leopard-icons-for-windows/ and download and extract the icon pack to the folder you just created.

Step 3 – Making the Mac Dock - (you should watch the video for this bit)

In Control Panel set your task bar colour to grey/white and move it to the top of your screen. Set the icons to small. Download and install Rocket Dock from http://www.rocketdock.com/download. Now download the Mac OSX Mountain Lion skin for Rocket-dock from http://rocketdock.com/addon/skins/45227. Now extract the Mac OSX Mountain Lion skin folder to Skins folder in the Rocket Dock folder in Program Files. Next run Rocket Dock. Remove all of the pre-loaded icons (by dragging and dropping somewhere else on your desktop) and open up your Program Files folder. In Program Files, find the executable files for your programs that you want on the dock and create short cuts for each of them on the desktop. Rename the short cuts to the actual name of the program (e.g. “chrome.exe – shortcut” > “Google Chrome”). Drag and drop all of the short cuts on your desktop to the dock and delete them from your desktop. Open up the Rocket Dock settings panel and check Run At Startup and Minimize Windows to the Dock. Go to the Style tab and select the theme to the Mac OSX Mountain Lion theme. Now click OK and your dock is complete!

Step 4 – Applying the Windows Blinds theme

Now we want a Mac OS X window theme. For that first go to: http://www.stardock.com/products/windowblinds/downloads.asp and download and install Windows Blinds. Once Windows Blinds is installed you will be immediately presented with the configuration panel. Click on Get More Skins which should open up a link in your browser. In the search bar, type in ‘mac’ and download the Mac OS X Tiger theme. Once it has downloaded open up the zip file and extract the Mac OSX Tiger.wba file to your Downloads library. In the Windows Blinds configuration, click Skin Options > Install new > (Select Mac OSX Tiger.wba in your Downloads). Now select the Tiger theme from the options at the bottom, hit Apply Changes and let Windows Blinds do it’s magic. You can now close out of the Windows Blinds configuration panel.

Step 5 – Installing the final touches

Now for the finishing touches…We are going to be installing:

Mac OS X Cursors

WinLaunch (Launchpad)

First download and install the Mac OS X Cursor Pack for Windows from the following link: http://www.46palermo.com/blog/mac-os-x-cursors-for-windows-7-vista-xp-easy-installer/ and proceed through the very simple installation. Now go to Start and type ‘cursor’ (without speech marks) and select the ‘Change how the mouse pointer looks’ option. Under Scheme select the Mac scheme and click Apply then OK. You should now notice that your cursor has turned black (like the Mac OS X cursor). The next program we are going to be installing is WinLaunch which is a Launchpad clone for Windows. You can download WinLaunch from: http://sourceforge.net/projects/winlaunch. Install it and you are up and running. Thanks for reading and please come back soon!

Compiling the Firmware The Firefly firmware uses freely available libraries and tools. To get setup

Compiling the Firmware

The Firefly firmware uses freely available libraries and tools. To get setup for building the Firefly Ice firmware you will need the following:

GNU Tools for ARM Embedded Processors

EnergyMicro CMSIS Software

Firefly version of the EnergyMicro CMSIS USB Software

Firefly Ice Firmware

The following commands can be used in the Mac OS X terminal to download and extract all of the above:

curl -O https://launchpadlibrarian.net/135590305/gcc-arm-none-eabi-4_7-2013q1-20130313-mac.tar.bz2
tar jxf gcc-arm-none-eabi-4_7-2013q1-20130313-mac.tar.bz2
export PATH=`pwd`/gcc-arm-none-eabi-4_7-2013q1/bin:$PATH

curl -O http://cdn.energymicro.com/dl/packages/EM_CMSIS_3.0.2.zip
unzip -d energymicro EM_CMSIS_3.0.2.zipgit clone https://github.com/denisbohm/energymicro-usb.git
git clone https://github.com/denisbohm/firefly-ice-firmware.git
cd firefly-ice-firmware
mkdir obj bin

Finally, from within the firefly-ice-firmware directory you can build the firmware using make:

make

The resulting FireflyIce.elf binary file can be found in the bin directory.

Loading the Firmware

It’s time to get the hardware setup. In addition to a Firefly Ice PCBA, you will need the following:

Olimex ARM-USB-TINY-H JTAG (olimex.com, mouser.com, digikey.com)

Connect everything together, plug the USB cable from the ARM-USB-TINY-H into your Mac, and plug the USB cable from the Firefly Ice into any USB port for power.

The Firefly Flash production software will be used to load the compiled FireflyIce.elf binary into the Firefly Ice PCBA. Download and run FireflyFlash.zip (it should automatically unzip when downloaded by Safari).

Click on “Select firmware ELF file…” and select the FireflyIce.elf file that you compiled in the steps above. Click “Program” and in a few seconds the indicators on the Firefly Ice should indicate that the firmware is running.

Debugging the Firmware

The Firefly Flash software acts as a gdb remote target for debugging. To start debugging with gdb:

arm-none-eabi-gdb

then enter the following gdb commands:

target extended-remote tcp:127.0.0.1:9000
set architecture armv3m
file bin/FireflyIce.elf

Now you can use gdb commands for debugging.

Alternatives

The process above is one way to build, run, and debug Firefly Ice. But it isn’t the only option. For example, a project file for the Rowley Associates CrossWorks for ARM development system is included in the Firefly Ice firmware repository as well. CrossWorks runs on Windows, Linux, and the Mac.

Any ARM Cortex-M3 gcc distribution could be used for compiling.

Any JTAG with SWD capability and the associated tool chain could be used for running and debugging. For example, the Olimex ARM-JTAG-SWD in combination with the Olimex ARM-JTAG-20-10 can be used instead of the Rowley ARM SWD Adapter with the same tool chain as above.

This is kind of a response to a post on Lifehacker…

Could this be how the different OS users seem to each other?… I mean, have you ever noticed how the OS debate always has people responding defensively, as if their choice is being repressed or somehow threatened? Is it at all likely, that all these defensive/offensive people have any reason to feel that way?… Unless we’re talking about them all being victims of Microsoft, Apple, or Canonical exploiting their pocket-books, it might be an eye-roller…

Windows

Windows users getting defensive might resemble feelings of being the “everyman” that gets downtrodden by “the man” when it’s convenient… you know, the kid in school who got bullied occasionally, but also bullied just as much – but remembers getting bullied.

MAC

MAC users getting defensive could seem much like the indie music fan with enough disposable income to go to shows all the time, but “no one understands” your “complicated & sophisticated” 1st-world problems…

Linux

Linux users getting defensive might look like someone who has found religion & want to peacefully go about the rest of their existence… until they can’t deal with the stigmatized feeling & deliberate incompatibility anymore & finally start telling you why your OS is leading you straight into techno-hell! But you started it. And you still want to kill them.

So what do you think?…

I’m hopefully poking fun at all of the above, without getting too nasty in the process. I think it’s been long enough that feelings on these 3 might actually have largely changed. I mean, so what if there’s tons of people using Linux when they don’t know it’s Linux (phones & various other devices)… Isn’t that how Windows got so much market share? People just bought a PC & used what was on it & what hopefully worked. Does anyone other than the tech-heads care that much?

Please, do chime in – just leave the jerk-pants at the door.

*This was originally commented on Google+.

**Brief disclosure: I use Linux distros most of the time these days, used Windows previously at home (much like everyone else who bought a new PC), as well as in the workplace, & I used MACs back as a Computer Graphics Major.

So you just got a brand new Mac with Mac OS X Mountain Lion installed, or maybe you’ve just upgraded from OS X Lion. Now what?

You have this brand new operating system that looks intimidating, overwhelming and confusing! You think to yourself, or maybe even post on Twitter of Facebook, “How the heck do I use this thing?” Have no fear! Mountain Lion is not as bad as you may think. Sure it will take some getting used to, but after a couple of weeks you’ll be a Mountain Lion pro – using gestures, keyboard shortcuts, cool Mac terminology and awesome Mac apps.

OS X Mountain Lion is the ninth major release of OS X (formerly Mac OS X). It’s an operating system for Mac computers that was released on July 25, 2012. The latest release on September 19, 2012 added a few extra features, making OS X Mountain Lion even better. So how is Mountain Lion different? OS X Mountain Lion marks the beginning of the merge between iOS (Apple’s mobile operating system) and OS X, hence the reason why many of the new features and apps in this operating system come straight from iOS.

With this guide you will receive daily updates in your email for free, courtesy of MakeTechEasier.

This 79-page ebook contains tips from getting around your Mac, to mastering the keyboard and trackpad, managing your apps, getting social in your Mac, and many more tips and tricks for you to get the most out of OS X Mountain Lion.
