せっかく大画面テレビがあるのだからMac内のコンテンツも大画面で見てみたい。テレビとMacBookを直接繋ぐという手もあるのだけれど、Mini DVIやMini DisplayportとUSBオーディオをHDMIに変換するケーブルは意外と高い。それにせっかくPS3もあるのだからと、PS3をメディアプレイヤーとして活用するべくMacをDLNAサーバーするソフトを探してみた。有料のものでElegatoのEyeConnectとNullriver SoftwareのMediaLinkが良さそうなのでとりあえず両方試すことに(いずれもSnow Leopard対応済み)。結果、EyeConnectでは一部の動画が見られなかった一方でMediaLinkはコンテンツのサムネイルも表示され再生も問題ない上に値段も安かったので買ってみた。これで実質的にはAppleTVいらずだ。

Its Cinderella contract with Apple for the iPhone runs out in seven months, says one analyst

Broadpoint AmTech’s Brian Marshall, who has replaced Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster as the most bullish of the mainstream Apple analysts, made several assertions of fact in an Bloomberg TV interview Friday that — if true — struck me as newsworthy. Chief among them:

• The contract that gives AT&T (T) exclusive access in the U.S. to Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone expires in June 2010.
• Apple is now getting a $450 subsidy from AT&T for each iPhone it sells; after June, that subsidy will be reduced to $300 for all carriers, domestic and international.
• The 4% of AT&T subscribers who use the iPhone consume roughly 40% of the network’s bandwidth.

Here and in a research note issued last late month, Marshall has been lobbying heavily for Apple to start selling the iPhone through Verizon (VZ). It turns out he may have personal reasons for doing so. He told Bloomberg’s Pimm Fox that whenever he travels to New York or San Francisco with his iPhone he gets dropped calls “all the time.”

“A very frustrating experience,” he said, “but I’m not going to move away because Apple has their hooks into me”

С того момента, как я остался без своего макбука, не покидает ощущение, что все, что я делаю вне работы, носит исключительно временный характер. Даже то, что я пишу сейчас, я пишу с iPhone, так как не воспринимаю windows машину, как нечто серьезное. Мы рабы привычек и стереотипов, вещей и традиций, но получается, что выбиваясь из общей массы, хотя бы средой виртуального обитания, мы надеваем на себя ярмо рабов все тех же вещей и символов, но со знаком минус.

Now, this is not really trivial. If the corporate IT department could be persuaded to enable IMAP on their Exchange server all would be good. Unfortunately, Microsoft-sentric IT departments usually have no knowledge of IMAP, and believes it to be insecure and downright dangerous. Enabling Webdav over SSL, on the other hand, is something they routinely enables on the server. Which is very lucky for me.

The Linux email client Evolution from Novell has support for using the Outlook Web Access API, so what I will do is set up a Linux virtual machine with Evolution that takes mail from the Exchange server via OWA and puts it on a IMAP account that I can read with Mail.app. A lot of hoops, but it works. Remember that this is not a complete step to step tutorial, if you have problems following this please get rid of you inner n00b, ok.

1. Get a Linux machine, physical or virtual. I use a seperate virtual machine just for this single purpose. Any Linux distribution will do, as long as it has a recent Evolution version.
2. Install Evolution on your Linux machine. Use the standard package manager.
3. For easy access to your Evolution email client, which is a GUI program, you will want to use something like VNC or NX from nomachine.com. Install NX server on your Linux machine, and NX client on your Mac.
4. Connect to your Linux machine with the NX client.
5. Start Evolution.
6. Configure accounts in Evolution.
   • Make sure you have your Exchange OWA URL, typically https://exchange.mycompany.com/exchange
   • Also make sure you have your proper domain, username and password for the Exchange server.
   • Add a new Exchange account. Make sure you check for new mail every or every other minute, and also check “Aplly filters to INBOX”.
   • Add a new IMAP account – if you don’t want to use an existing one please create another on Your Mail Server.
7. Set up filters in Evolution.  
   • Create a filter (Edit -> Message Filters) that takes all mail and copies it to the IMAP account, then moves it to a read folder on the Exchange server and sets it status as read. Or whatever you like.
     
8. Now set up that IMAP account in Mail.app on you Mac and you are ready to go.
9. Send a test mail to your Exchange account and watch it magically appear on your Mac!

¿Cansado del Dock de Mac? Tranquilo, Docker te lo pone fácil para tunearlo y darle un aspecto muy diferente al que estás acostumbrado.

Con Docker podrás darle un estilo 2D o 3D a tu Dock, colocarlo en cualquier esquina y sin centrar, ocultar iconos de aplicaciones cerradas, personalizar el estilo de los indicadores de aplicaciones abiertas y separadores, animar de una forma distinta los iconos al minimizar ventanas y un largo etcétera.

Docker también cuenta con la opción de bloquear opciones de la configuración de tu Dock, para que otro usuario no te cambie el tamaño del Dock, su posición o el tamaño de los iconos.

Por último, con Docker podrás añadir Stacks personalizados con los que ver las aplicaciones y documentos más usados o los últimos en abrir.

Para utilizar Docker necesitas:

Okay, so here’s my first real post: A list of stores I visit at the local mall every week, just to see what I can add to my want or need list!  Kind of weird and compulsive maybe, but I find it strangely relaxing.  So, my list is…

• MAC – The Pro Store and the counter at The Bay… If I don’t visit both, I feel like I’m cheating on the other.
• Banana Republic – I love their clothes, but rarely ever have a place to wear them.  I mostly buy jewelry from here.
• Aldo Accessories – I only buy the most fabulous rings and earrings from here.  You know, the huge, magnificent kind.  Sometimes I like their studs.
• Aritzia – For the clothes.  If you don’t have an Aritzia or know what it is, check out the link.  Amazing!
• Nine West – For purses and flats.  Love them!

Ich musst doch etwas stutzen, als ein Kommilitone in Mathe, nur eine Reihe vor mir, auf meinem Handy zu tippen begann, mit meinem Notebook auf den Knien.

Dann kam der Bling!-Moment. Na klar, er hatte nur das gleiche Equipment (später haben wir noch abgefahrene andere Gemeinsamkeiten entdecken können).

Doch in einem war er mir weit voraus. Mein Mac war bis eben in grau/schwarzes Neopren gekleidet gewesen. Seiner in edlen Filz.

Jetzt schläft auch meiner in einem “Hirsch&Söhne” Schlafanzug, handgenäht von meinen (wohlgemerkt BWL!) Kommilitonen.

Zu Beginn war es noch etwas irritierend, dass die Menschen nicht mehr auf den Mac (ist in der Uni aber auch nichts besonderes mehr, da hat jeder einen, nerv!) sondern auf die schöne Hülle schauten.

Aber lassen wir ihn mal zu Wort kommen. Mein Mac nach einer Woche im “Hirsch&Söhne” PJ:

“Moin ihr Notebook-Geschwister,

möchte es nicht mehr missen, in Filz zu schlafen und genieße es, nichteinmal mehr aufzuwachen, wenn Bene mit mir Rad fährt.

Mein liebster Moment ist das Aufwachen. Es wird nicht etwa ein schnöder Reißverschluss geöffnet. Ich werde auf den Tisch gelegt, die Lasche wird vor mir aufgeklappt und ich kann aus meinen PJ gleiten.

Mir hat Steve Jobs die kleinen Füße geklaut, doch jetzt kann ich auf meiner Hülle liegen und muss mich nicht mehr mit jedem x-beliebigen Tisch begnügen.

Ich hatte Bene verboten darüber zu bloggen, weil ich nicht wollte, dass alle anfangen diese Hülle zu tragen. Er brauchte aber ein Thema und um extra abzustürzen, war er heute zu gut zu mir.”

Ok, let’s start. I decided to translate a part of this post for English-speaking people since I haven’t found any website talking about how to use Madobe Nanami’s sounds on OS X. And I’m sure a lot of otakus out there would like to do it, but may not know how to
I hope this post will be of some use to you.
I’ll make a step-by-step “guide”, but it’s not really complicated

This is what Madobe Nanami sounds like.

First, I advise you to make a copy of the sounds you are going to replace, and make a back-up of your system ! You don’t have to do it actually, but I like being cautious in case something goes wrong

1. You need to get the sounds somewhere from the web

2. If necessary, adjust the volume of the sounds to meet your expectations.

3. If necessary, convert the files to wave or mp3. These formats work with applications like Adium. I used wave in 48 000 Hz, 16 bits, mono.

4. For sounds used by the UI, you have to convert them to AIFF, or they won’t work. I know iTunes and QuickTime Pro convert files to AIFF.

5. Now, to replace the alert sound, go to System\Library\Sounds in the finder. Drop your file and go to the preferences panel, then Sound > Sound Effects, and choose from the list.

6. To replace UI sounds, go to System\Library\Components in the finder and show the package of CoreAudio.component. Now go to Contents\Resources\SystemSounds and there will be folders with the sounds you want to change.

7. It is also possible to add a sound when unmounting an image or a device. To do this, you need to download MacBarfX. Now mount the dmg file and show the package of the application. Open the Resources folder and replace barf.aiff by the sound you want.

When replacing some files, OS X will ask you to authenticate, and they will only work once you have rebooted.

You now have a nanamized Mac ! Have fun !
