Can Louis van Gaal win the Champions League again?

This week sees the conclusion of the group stages in the UEFA Champions League. “Stoppage Time” takes a look back at how each group has shaped up, starting with groups A-D today, followed by groups E-H tomorrow:

GROUP A (BORDEAUX, BAYERN MUNICH, JUVENTUS, MACCABI HAIFA)

Bordeaux surprised the pundits with a near faultless performance in group A. “Les Girondins” only dropped two points away at Juventus on Matchday 1 leaving the traditional big boys “Juve” and FC Bayern to fight it out for second place. During the campaign it seemed as if Bayern’s domestic troubles were going to destroy their European ambitions and, with two matchdays to go, Juve seemed to be going through. However the four time European champions from Bavaria still had a chance on Matchday 6, all they had to do was beat Juventus away in Turin. What seemed a tough task proved, ultimately, to be a stroll in the park for Louis van Gaal’s men as they won 4-1 including a penalty goal from Bayern keeper Hans-Jörg Butt. Juventus are now confined to the Europa League whilst Israeli champions Maccabi Haifa couldn’t even score a goal in the whole group stage and, unsurprisingly, remained pointless after six games.

GROUP B (MANCHESTER UNITED, CSKA MOSCOW, VfL WOLFSBURG, BESIKTAS)

As expected Manchester United topped the group in comfortable fashion. CSKA Moscow claimed the second place after a 2-1 success away in Istanbul against Besiktas on Matchday 6. The celebrations were dampened somewhat by the news that two of their players, Alexei Berezutsky and Sergei Ignashevich, were tested positive for banned substances. However UEFA has decided to punish the players rather than the club for what officals of CSKA Moscow called “a clerical error”.  German champions VfL Wolfsburg had a good maiden campaign in Europe’s elite class with Edin Džeko attracting the notice of some of Europe’s biggest clubs with some good performances, most notably against Manchester United at Old Trafford. Besiktas were struggling from the start but a consolation win over Manchester United in Matchday 5 proved to be their only highlight. With players such as Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen showing glimpses of their best “ManU” finished with 13 points at the top of the group with CSKA three points behind. Wolfsburg’s European campaign will continue in the Europa League whilst Besiktas have to revert back to the travails of domestic football.

GROUP C (REAL MADRID, AC MILAN, OLYMPIQUE MARSEILLE, FC ZÜRICH)

Before a ball was kicked in this group virtually everybody had tipped Real Madrid and AC Milan, two clubs with sixteen European Cups before them, to qualify for the Round of 16 and so it was proved. The only real blip which the Spanish side suffered was their 3-2 home defeat by the Italian giants on Matchday 3. FC Zürich had their moments too, a 1-0 defeat of AC Milan in the San Siro on Matchday 2 had their fans dreaming of further glory. Sadly for the Swiss champions their double header against Marseille proved disappointing and effectively knocked them out of the competition. On Matchday 6 Marseille still had a chance of progressing but they had to defeat Real Madrid, who were already through, at home and hope Milan dropped points in Zürich. The latter scenario happened as Milan could only manage a 1-1 draw but Cristiano Ronaldo was in scintillating form for Real Madrid scoring twice in a 3-1 win at Stade Vélodrome to send Marseille into the Europa League.

GROUP D (CHELSEA FC, FC PORTO, ATLÉTICO DE MADRID, APOEL NICOSIA)

Chelsea and FC Porto were clearly the two best sides in the group easily seeing off a poor Atleti and a weak APOEL team although the Cypriots were far from expected to qualify for the last 16. Chelsea’s two matches against FC Porto determined the top two placings with the London club winning 1-0 home and away. This was the difference between the two teams even allowing for the fact that Chelsea drew 2-2 away at Atleti and at home to APOEL on Matchday 6 when they’d already qualified. Chelsea finsihed on 14 points two ahead of Porto who some people fancy as a good outside bet in the tournament. “Los Rojiblancos” (the red and whites) of Madrid scraped through to the Europa League going through on their head-to-head record against APOEL. With both teams finishing on three points each after six games Atleti’s away goal in the 1-1 draw in Cyprus proved crucial as APOEL were only able to manage a 0-0 draw in Spain.

A két nagy múltú csapat között ez lesz az ötödik összecsapás, ugyanis a 2004/05 és 2005/06 kiírásban is megmérkőztek már egymással. A mérleg a zebrák javára billen, az olaszok neve mellett két győzelem, egy döntetlen és mindössze egy vereség áll. A bajorok minden esetre mindent megtesznek azért, hogy javítsanak a mérleg állásán, és kedveskedjenek egy kicsit a szurkolóiknak, mert a bajnokság jelenlegi állása nem túl kecsegtető Luis van Gaal legénységére tekintve, a pirosak hét meccs után csak a hetedik helyen tanyáznak tizenegy ponttal. Az „Öreg Hölgy” valamivel jobban kezdte a bajnokságot és hat forduló után a második helyen áll 14 ponttal. A Bajnokok Ligájában azonban pont fordított a helyzet, a Bayern van az első helyen, miután Izraelben könnyed 3–0-ás győzelmet aratott a Maccabi Haifa felett. Lorant Blancnak játékosként 2002-ben már egyszer sikerült legyőznie a Maccabit, akkor a Manchester Unitedot erősítette és 5–2-re diadalmaskodtak. Most edzőként is szeretne bizonyítani.

A B csoport nagy favoritjaként a Manchester United a Wolfsburgot látja vendégül. Biztos, hogy a „vörös ördögök” nem igen fogják pátyolgatni soron következő ellenfelüket, és majd mindent megtesznek, hogy a három pont otthon maradhasson. A Wolfsburg jól kezdte a BL-ben való szereplést és tetszetős játékkal, a Grafite–Djeko duónak köszönhetően 3–1-re verték a Moszkvai CSZKA-t. A farkasoknak azonban nehéz dolguk lesz az „álmok színházában” ugyanis 2005 óta vendégcsapat nem tudott itt diadalmaskodni. De a mostani United nincs jó formában: a Manchester City-nek is sikerült három gólt bevarrnia a Sir Alex Ferguson által edzett fiúk kapujába. Reménykedjünk a jó játékban és a sok gólban.

A B csoport másik összecsapását a két keleti gárda közt rendezik, ahol a CSZKA Moszkva a Besiktassal csap össze. Az első körben mindkét csapat vereséget szenvedett. A Besiktas hazai pályán nem adta olcsón a bőrét és a 77. percig döntetlenre állt a sokkal nagyobb presztízsű és sokkal jobb játékosállományt felvonultató Manchester Uniteddel szemben, ekkor azonban jött Paul Scholes és góljával eldöntötte a három pont sorsát. Az oroszok a már fentebb említett Wolfsburgtól szenvedtek 3–1-es vereséget idegen környezetben. A gólt Dzagoev szerezte. Most a törökök fognak vendégszerepelni és reménykednek a jobb folyatásban.

A C csoportban az újonc FC Zürich látogat a San Siroba, ahol az AC Milannal csap össze. A Rossoneri elégé bukdácsol hazai porondon: csupán a 11. A BL-ben azonban értékes három pontot tudott elrabolni a Marseille-től, akit Franciaországban győzött le 2–1-re. A Svájci gárda morálja a padlón hever, ugyanis házigazdaként 2–5-re végződött meccsen maradt alul a Real Madrid ellen, ahol kapusuk két gólnál is hibázott. De egy kupameccs sosem hasonlítható a másikhoz, és akár az is megtörténhet, hogy ma a svájciak fognak örülni.

A másik ágon az eddig minden meccsét megnyerő Real Madrid látja vendégül az Olympique Marseille együttesét. Történelmük során már találkozott egyszer a két gárda. Akkor a Real kettős győzelemmel jutott tovább. Jelenleg a galaktikusok a Barcelonával holtversenyben vezetik a Primera Divisiont , és a gólátlaguk 3 szerzett gól meccsenként. A BL-ben is jól kezdtek és ötöt lőttek az FC Zürichnek. A franciák utolsó meccsüket a bajnokságban 3–2-re elveszítették, és a Bernabeuban mindenképpen javítani szeretnének. De ehhez a „FronTEAM”-nek is lesz egy-két szava.

A D csoportban az APOEL Nicosia a Chelsea gárdáját fogadja. Ez lesz az első összecsapás a két csapat között. Az első fordulóban a ciprusiak megviccelték az Atletico Madrid gárdáját és idegenben egy gól nélküli döntetlennel kezdték idei BL-szereplésüket. A Roman Abramovics által patronált londoni gárda 1–0-ra múlta felül a Portót hazai környezetben. Ennek az összecsapásnak a Chelsea a nagy esélyese, de talán a ciprusiak még tartogatnak egyet-mást a tarsolyukban.

Nagy harc várható a D csoport másik összecsapásán. Az Atletico Madrid az FC Portóval küzd meg a három pontért. A madridiak vereségnek is elkönyvelhető 0–0-ra végződő meccset játszottak, fontos lett volna legyőzni az APOEL-t. Ha ebben a kupasorozatban szeretnének szerepelni tavasszal is, ma is otthon kell, hogy tartsák a három pontot. Ezt a Portó próbálja majd megakadályozni. Az a Portó, amely Londonban csupán 1–0-ra kapott ki a Carlo Ancelotti által vezetett legénységtől. Talán ez lesz a nap legkiegyenlítettebb összecsapás, mindenképpen küzdelmes játékra várhatunk.

Music has a deep influence on our lives. Each of us is naturally drawn to a different style of music. Different periods of our life are characterized by the type of music we listen to. Various composers expressed feelings, seasons and complete stories through their music. When I turned to Chinese medicine in order to gain a basic understanding of this concept, I discovered many interesting ideas. It seems that in Chinese classical music, a musical scale exists similar to the one we use in the West. The music was described with a very close connection to the seasons of the year and the biological clock. (In Chinese medicine, every two hours is connected to a certain energy quality), so that, in effect, it is possible to influence the physiology of an individual through music.

I decided to delve deeper. The starting point is the relationship between the different sounds and their influence on humans. The individual, of course, is the beginning point. The part of us that produces sounds is our voice and it also is an exact expression of our level of energy at any given time. When I say energy, I refer to the behaviors that occur at a given time- chemical, metabolic, electrical actions, etc.

The first examination was done with a device that measures the electrical charge at the points of acupuncture – EAV. One long sound was played and I measured the change in current at the acupuncture points. We did find there was a change and at this point, I saw the green light in beginning to understand the influence of sound on the human body in a more specific manner.

It appears that it is possible to look at the human body as a collection of building and tearing down processes. The building processes we will call the rising musical scale

(lower to higher pitches) and the tearing down process, a descending musical scale.

It is possible to know where to the processes are halted in the body by listening to the pulse- a typical Chinese diagnosis technique.

Another discovery is that different musical steps will influence the body in different ways. For example, a relatively small musical step will produce a gentle, building motion, whereas a larger musical step will produce a stronger motion.

In almost every treatment I have done, it seems that harmonial music causes a strengthening of the base and building blocks in the body. In general, the treatment is very relaxing.

Presently, treatment is conducted with the use of tuning forks which were used in the past to tune musical instruments. The use of tuning forks allows treatment through the acupuncture points by natural, exact sounds that are pleasant to the body. (The ends of the tuning forks are placed on specific points of the body which are adjusted for each individual).

I have developed and continue to develop this method today, on the basis of models from classical Chinese medicine.

i had to brave the world of bureaucracy today. and let me tell you, i kicked its ass! okay, so maybe not entirely, but i at least gave it a nosebleed.
here in israel, all government type bills are paid through the post office. odd but kind of convenient. and all offices have really strange hours. some close in the middle of the day for a few hours and then reopen, but that isn’t necessarily the same from day to day. but i made it to the bank on time. made it to the post on time and then, even being sabotaged by a prankster security guard, found my way to the health insurance office.
now the prank may have been warranted since i was too tired and hot to bother with hebrew and simply asked in english where the office was when the guard was clearly standing at the door to the building with Maccabi emblazoned above it. his response was “what? i don’t know” and an adorable smile. stupid sephardi dreamboat security guards. so i walked a little farther and asked another security guard. he looked at me like i was crazy and said “it’s the next door over.” so i walk back and the security guy gave me a sly smile and said “i’m new here.” i said “no you’re not!” and he laughed. turns out the office was closed for another hour so i walked around and got a bureka at the shuk. when i went back once the hour was up, the security guard was still smirking. i have to admit i was laughing too.
and once i finally made it into the office, i got my health insurance card quickly and it was smooth and painless. this is not at all like the horror stories i have heard.
i am thinking i might even go ahead and get my driver’s license here soon. it’s not so much that i want to drive as that i can get the license more easily within the first few months of aliyah so i may as well do it.
of course, i saw a hot pink and black and white checkered scooter on shabbat and now i think i need one, so maybe i will get my motorcycle license too….. hmm… recipe for disaster, me thinks.
i must get some sleep now! i am WORN OUT.
