Membership to Mac-related online apps and sites adds to the unending thrill of being an Apple user,

Membership to Mac-related online apps and sites adds to the unending thrill of being an Apple user, even if it means, like in my case, not actually being as active or passionate in devoting the same amount of internet time as I used to as when I first signed up for these.

Somehow, Mac-related sites have always been kind of sleek, kind of more fun, requiring a bit more brain power than, say, Windows apps that seem designed with just end-user ‘fun’ in mind, a lot of smooth graphics and little else. This is not meant to be another of those “vs.” posts — never was a fan of that. It’s just how I see and experience it, having come from Windows since the DOS days.

Besides, I never can get into a “vs.” discussion in real life, especially if the discussants are hard core X vs. Y, “Apples vs. Oranges” kind of people.

Anyhow, great online apps and sites provide good diversions from routine and intensive brain+physical work. One such site is MacHeist. Not only are its games (called “Missions”) gems, the bundled apps they have given out so far are great.

While getting squeezed between two major activities in the past few days, I managed to respond to a November Macheist email notification because it was one the best bundles it has ever offered following the one in April ‘09.

MacHeist3 (the November edition, aka nanoBundle) includes the following apps:

ShoveBox from WonderWarp, worth $24.95

WriteRoom from hogbaysoftware, $24.95

Twitterific from Iconfactory, $14.95

TinyGrab from Keyone Productions, £10

Hordes of Orcs from Freeverse , $24.95 (Win/Mac)

Mariner Write from MarinerSoftware $49.95 (Win/Mac) - Mariner has loads of writing apps, by the way.

and the highly-rated VirusBarrier X5 from Intego, $69.95

Except for Hordes of Orcs, I had been able to successfully download all apps as of this writing but have not installed all of them yet. I had used the early WriteRoom version previously and would be looking forward to what the latest has to offer. Meanwhile, still attempting to recover some personal time due to the two major events mentioned (and some other work in between that were not as loaded but were equally demanding of attention), I chose to install VirusBarrier X5 as a supplement to ClamXav.

By the way, I mention the thrill of being an Apple user but I can honesty say the Mac I work on is not all a smooth and easy ride. This Mac in particular is a 1st-generation MacBook Pro (ca. 2006) and its age is showing. It has, on the average, stayed on for 48 hours without shutting down. Its optical drive has been bricked by a nasty firmware update by Apple back in 2008, something, some say, Apple has hidden from the public: not a very noble move by Apple there. (NOTE: I dug up archived sites on this superdrive issue when I was looking for solutions which can be read here and here).

It’s a Mac Anti-Virus program

As the name suggests, VirusBarrier X5 is a virus scanner and anti-virus app for the Mac like ClamXav. It took about 2 hours and 15 minutes to scan the whole 80gb hard drive as it combed through 592,641-plus of combined apps and files.

VirusBarrier X5 interface design is a masculine feel, something the boys will love. It kind of reminds me of the Windows audio player app "Winamp".

The intital scan detected X97M/Yosenio.gen hidden within an Excel macro (.xla) file named “GhostWorld.xla” which, I discovered, was in the Mac. How I got this file is beyond me. Perhaps it was picked up by my USB drive after plugging it into the Windows computer at the neighborhood internet cafe a few weeks ago. (Strangely, all other GhostWorld associated files are dated “12/11/04, 5:29 pm” as revealed in Finder. It predates the Mac in which it now resides, and the installed Office applications, by two years.)

Since I had not run ClamXav after the period in which I suspect I got the Yosenio.gen file from the net cafe, there is no way for me to determine whether ClamXav could have detected or overlooked the file. I noticed that the Mac did exhibit certain unusual behaviors since that period, such as going through a soft crash or freezing up when I plugged in the USB wifi stick, etc. I did plug the USB thumb drive into my mother’s Windows laptop by mistake and, just as I had suspected, its default anti-virus scanner, McAfee, popped an alert faster than I could eject it.

Mac-ros

Ok, the point is Macs may be immune to Windows viruses but it serves as a temporary asylum in which these hibernate until such time that a device, such as a USB thumb drive, is stuck into its ports, and just as quickly as a Windows malware jumps into alien environment such as OS X, that it transfers to an empty space in the removable device as it waits to be transported into another computer that it can infect or successfully cause trouble.

On the other hand, macro viruses are cross-platform viruses and can thrive in both Windows and Mac environments. Macros are helpful application commands designed to enhance certain features of, say MS Word or Excel files. However, since macros are not executable files and are document-related (e.g. they exist within an application’s files and do not need a command to invoke its execution), they are deemed more dangerous than trojans, worms and viruses.

I am always wary about getting Windows viruses because I’d like to avoid being responsible for infecting another computer, specifically a Windows-based computer. The Windows malware may not wreak havoc on the Mac and I can just proceed to work as usual, without any worry of my files being corrupted and such, because Windows malware are programmed to sniff out specific Windows files to play hookey with. But because the Mac serves as convenient transport zone for these suspicious files — as long as they stay undisturbed in a ’safe’ place (other than the Trash) — that it still makes me very wary of them. Having said that, if one is running Windows on a Mac, it is just as wise to install a Windows-based anti-virus program for one’s protection.

I’ve decided to keep VirusBarrier X5 inspite of my limited hard drive space. It puts an icon on the menu bar for instance access to its other features, and another icon in the dock. It is an unintrusive app that provides real-time scanning without hogging my limited resources. ClamXav, meanwhile, can slow down my work during background scans, by the way.

I’m quite happy with VirusBarrier X5, and grateful that an excellent site like MacHeist, which has provide my license, has included this app in its bundle and have donated part of the ‘loot’ to charity in the process. I can’t wait to give the other applications a try and for the next bundle to come along.

Well done, Macheist and Intego.

Time is winding down on a couple of great software deals. MacHeist, as previously noted, has tried an interesting bit of marketing to bring new users into its fold, by bundling six applications together and offering them up for free (well, in exchange for the all-important contact information). That bundle, dubbed the “nanobundle” by MacHeist, officially ends tonight. According to the counter on their website, there are twelve hours left.

In response to the Macheist deal, one independent Mac software developer, Daniel Jalkut, came up with an idea to have a promotion of his own, called the One Finger Discount. As he noted, “Everybody loves a deal. We’re banding together to give customers a price break, and to spread the word about Mac software they may not have heard about.” I asked him last night on Twitter if he’d had much feedback regarding sales from others. He said, “Every dev I’ve heard from has been “stoked” by the response.”

The One Finger Discount officially ends the same time as the MacHeist bundle, but Jalkut says he’s recommended everybody keep running thru Friday or later. Show your support for Mac software. There are over 100 developers on the list, and many have more than one app listed. Therefore, there are potentially several hundred apps listed from which to choose. Now that sounds like a great shopping spree!

Today is the last day to get your free download from macheist.com. Depending on your needs you may want all 6 six of them.

Let’s take a look at each of these apps in short:
ShoveBox, WriteRoom, Twitterific, TinyGrab, Hordes of Orcs, and Mariner Write.

(1) ShoveBox – Think evernote on this one: well, kinda evernote. ShoveBox works on the same principal as evernote, that we have too much crap flooding our brains while we sit at the computer. From twitter, facebook, chat tools, websites, email…and now that google came out with Wave, there’s always something flashing or popping up on our screens. ShoveBox is designed to help you capture those small pieces of information that you want to revisit, but don’t have them time to get to at the time. Like, when you’re at work “working” and you aren’t supposed to be browsing CNN to see what’s happening in the world. Rather than forgetting it, the makers of this application want you to highlight the URL, or image, or chunk of text and throw it in your cardboard box (which sits in your menu bar) so you can go read it later. The trick, then, is to remember that you put things there. There is a ShoveBox app for your iPhone too, $3.99 in the app store, which will sync what you’ve captured. This application has some promise: the real trick is remembering that you put something in it. I suppose if you make a habit of checking it during your lunch hour or free time it won’t be an issue to remember. I haven’t played with it yet, but I hope it’s better than evernote which I’ve tried twice and uninstall twice.

(2) WriteRoom – I’m actually writing this entry in WriteRoom, and so far I’m enjoying it. WriteRoom also considers the fact that there’s usually too much crap on our screens and we’re frequently distracted by our computers while we’re working. The app designers are very clear about the purpose of the tool in this posting on their website:
“Is WriteRoom the right tool for you?

WriteRoom is designed for distraction free writing. If you are looking for a programmer’s text editor or tool to help you manage large writing projects then there are better choices. If you need syntax highlighting and command line integration try TextMate. If you need to manage large writing projects try Scrivener. If you just need to block out distractions and write then I think WriteRoom is a great choice.”

I appreciate that they aren’t trying to be all things to all people. This is a writing tool, not a designing, editing, layout tool. You write with it, and that’s it. Plain and simple. I’m able to focus well on what I’m writing as WriteRoom is launched in full-screen, thus eliminating all the other pieces that get in the way. It also auto-saves. Every 5 seconds, 10 seconds, all the way to “never”. That’s up to you, and it’s a good thing. My current color scheme is lime-green text on a black background, just like the old Apple IIE. It doesn’t get much more basic.

(3) Twitterific - A nice little program for you twitter account(s). I started my tweeting days with the free version of twitterific then changed over to tweetdeck. Not to say that this isn’t a good tool, it just didn’t quite “fit” my liking. Give it a shot though, it might suit your desires.

(4) – TinyGrab – A simple-to-use screen capture program. It doesn’t operate any differently than your built-in Mac OS X screen capture tool, except that in pushing command-shift-4 and doing the screen capture the software automatically creates a link to the images to be posted and shared with your friends. It’s not one of the applications I downloaded because I don’t need an extra piece of software to launch to preform the functions that I already can use with my OS. Besides most twitter apps will automatically create a URL for you if you tweet an image. Beyond that using google wave or email will get the image to someone just as easily and sending them a link.

(5) Hordes of Orcs – Ummm…I don’t get it. I’m not a gamer, not will I ever be one. There’s something about building towers and defending a kingdom or some such thing. I’m not going to do it any justice so just check the website.

(6) Mariner Write – While I didn’t download this program, it’s description puts it somewhere between WriteRoom and MicroSoft Word. It is capable of writing and reading word files, so if you don’t have Microsoft Office it may be worth a look…at least for the next few hours while it’s free.

I’m not exactly an authority on Mac software, but I can talk about what I’ve used and what it’s done for me. Some of these are worth the installation and some aren’t so much. Anyways, for the time being they’re free, so it can’t hurt to give them a shot, so take a journey over to MacHeist and take a look.

There’s only 1 day left to scoop up the MacHeist nanoBundle for $FREE.99. MacHeist usually teams up with indie developers to deliver quality Mac applications bundled for a great price (for a limited time). With the nanoBundle, however, they’ve decided it’d be best to give this bundle away for free.

It’s really simple. Just visit the MacHeist site, create a login and download any (or all) of the 6 programs up for grabs. Then, check out your “receipt” on the site to find the serial numbers for your new apps! If you’re a Facebook user, there’s a bonus 7th app available to you if you spread the word. Here are the apps in the nanoBundle:

ShoveBox – Note taker, thought organizer

WriteRoom – Distraction-free word processing

Twitterrific – Ad-Free version of the popular Twitter client

TinyGrab – Take/upload screenshots in a flash

Hordes of Orcs – Tower-defense game

Mariner Write – Powerful, yet streamlined word processor

(BONUS) VirusBarrier X5 – Antivirus for Mac including 6 months of updates

That’s a $224 value for F-R-E-E but, there’s only 1 day left to take advantage of this deal so jump on it!

Macheist is now giving out a free software bundle worth $150! It includes good apps like Twitterific, WriteRoom (which I’m using to type this right now), TinyGrab, and Shovebox. TinyGrab is a dead-simple solution to taking screenshots on mac, instantly uploading to a server. Shovebox allows you to take small notes on what you don’t want to forget later, featuring a beautiful interface and seamless integration with the mac operating system.

There is also an app called Hordes of Orcs which I’ve never heard of. I guess if you like that kind of game you would like this.

Mariner Write, a great premium word processor with minimalistic features, will be free for everyone once 500,000 people have signed up. So go ahead and try it!

Macheist gives most of its proceeds to charity, so you can do this with a good feeling in your mind

I noted a couple of days ago that MacHeist has begun an interesting ploy to garner contact information for the next iteration of their highly successful MacHeist series. For the low, low price of “free”, along with your contact info, you can download a nice little bundle of six various applications, ranging from a popular Twitter client to an organizer to a tower defense game.

To tie in to the promo, Daniel Jalkut, of Red-Sweater Software, came up with his own idea to have a One Finger Discount. He initially told folks on Twitter to pick up the MacHeist bundle, and “with some of the money you save, spend $20-$60 to make some developer’s day”.

I thought it was a great idea, and began to retweet it. Apparently, a lot of other folks thought it was a great idea as well, because it grew…rapidly! Before long, several high-profile blogs (Ars, MacWorld, TUAW) had picked up the story, and Jalkut found himself barraged with takers to add to the hastily crafted webpage he put together at One Finger Discount. He has taken a beating in many comments about the design of the One Finger Discount “Website”. True enough, he obviously didn’t see it taking on a life of its own so quickly, but he’s also the first to admit he’s no webmaster. Still, I wish someone would cobble something together for him (heck, even in iWeb!) that didn’t look like my 3-year old niece did it!

Friday morning he tweeted “Developer reaction insane. Now I have a taste for what it’s like to be @sethdill during PMC. Trying to keep up.” He was referring to Seth Dillingham, and his Pan-Mass Challenge annual software bundle auction to raise money for The Jimmy Fund/Dana-Farber Cancer Center. I volunteered and helped Seth and his wife, Corinne, with that auction a few months ago. I could just imagine Seth sitting back shaking his head, wryly smirking, saying, “Dude, you have NO idea….”
By last night, he had added, “Jeez, if this keeps up we won’t need a reference page. Just assume all software on the planet is 20% off.”

Now THAT sounds like a deal!

The One Finger allegedly comes from 1/5, or a 20% discount, rather than a free five-finger discount. It’s still almost a steal. I suppose which finger you want to use depends on your perceptions of MacHeist and its creators. It’s no secret that many developers, including Jalkut, have been critical of MacHeist in the past, largely because of its practice of giving independent software developers a lot of exposure and customers, but keeping most of the profits for itself.

In an email response printed in MacWorld’s article about it, Jalkut responds to some Twitter users raising questions about the negative connotation of the ” One Finger Discount ” name. He says, “The name is just something that came to mind when I was making the coupon code for my own store. It is entirely inspired by ‘five-finger discount’ and it only occurred to me afterwards (with the help of Twitter followers) that it had a potential negative connotation. MacHeist jokes with the idea of software thievery, so I thought I’d play along.”

In a tweet tonight, Jalkut said, “It started as a whim, and took over my weekend. I bet One Finger Discount will be >100 developers on Monday.” I’ll bet he’s right. So far, more than 75 developers have tossed their hat into the ring. I’ve already found several apps that I was unaware of, have purchased a couple, and will likely purchase 2 or 3 more before it’s over. I’m posting this using one of my all-time fave apps, MarsEdit!. If you blog and you don’t use MarsEdit, you seriously owe it to yourself to check out this app.

The promo runs during the same time as the MacHeist NanoBundle, until November 13.

As we wrote yesterday, MacHeist is doing a new promotion, this time offering six Mac apps for free.

As we wrote yesterday, MacHeist is doing a new promotion, this time offering six Mac apps for free. MacHeist has long been controversial in the indie developer community, with many developers believing that the promotion, which offers a bundle of applications at either a steep discount (or in this case for free), reduces the value of the work that developers put into Mac applications. One of the sharpest critics of MacHeist has been Daniel Jalkut, developer of MarsEdit.

In response to the latest MacHeist, Jalkut has organized a counter promotion of indie Mac developers offering a 20 percent discount on their applications. Dubbed the One Finger Discount, in a not-so-subtle nod towards the five finger discount some people say you get from MacHeist, the promotion is being offered for this week only. There are now over 40 different developers participating and new ones are being added all the time.

If you’re interested on picking up a discount on some interesting Mac software, or if you want to participate check out the website here.

MacHeist is well-known in the Mac community for offering great deals on bundles of Mac software. There have been 3 ‘heists’ so far with thousands benefiting from the latest software at fantastic prices. I have participated in all three and have found them to be well worth participating in. The next major ‘heist’ hasn’t been announced yet but there is what they are calling the ‘nanoBundle’.There are five apps available for free right now, with a sixth, Mariner Write becoming unlocked when 500,000 folk have participated. Currently 127,641 have so there is a way to go before the target is reached. If you haven’t participated yet there are only 5 days left so you had better get a move on!

So far, with over $19,665,800 saved it represents a great deal for anyone looking for great Mac apps at the lowest price possible (zero!). If they manage to reach their target of 500,000 then Mariner Write for zilch (instead of $50) makes the bundle represents a saving of almost $154 per bundle!

Included in the bundle are:

Shovebox from Wnder Warp Software ($24.95) – handy utility for saving and organising bits of information.

WriteRoom from Hog Bay Software ($24.95) – distraction free writing in a very elegant package.

Twitterrific from Iconfactory – ad-free version of the popular app for all you Twitter addicts!

TinyGrab from TinyGrab software – simple screenshot sharing via email, IM, Twitter, Facebook etc.

Hordes of Orcs from Freeverse – a Tower Defense strategy game with six game variations.

Mariner Write from Mariner Software ($49.95) – a fast word processor for everyone (unlocked when target of 500,000 reached).
