Curt Eysink is an unpopular man. Less than three months after assuming his post as executive directo

Curt Eysink is an unpopular man.

Less than three months after assuming his post as executive director of the Louisiana Workforce Commission, he told a panel charged with overhauling the state’s higher education system: “We’re producing a workforce that we cannot employ in Louisiana.”

The problem? Too many four-year college grads and not enough low-skill and vocational trade workers.

Where is the job growth?

The service industry.

“[O]ccupational forecasts that show the state will produce 10,312 more four-year graduates than there are jobs to fill between 2008 and 2016, while at the same time there are 3,892 more jobs available requiring associates’ or technical degrees than there are people to fill them, ” reports Jan Moller of the Times Picayune.

Fairly or not, such news equates in Americans’ minds with sub par wages. And low-wage prospects make Americans see red.

“If I saw the strongest growth area was ushers, lobby attendants and ticket-takers, I’d leave Louisiana too,” said Belle Wheelan, president of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Outside of Louisiana this story has not gained much traction. But it is far from a Louisiana fluke.

“According to the Forgotten MiddleSkill Jobs reports by The Workforce Alliance, middle-skill occupations, which require more than a high school education but less than a four-year degree, make up roughly half of all employment in the nation, compared with only 1/3 of high-skill occupations that require at least a four-year education,” writes Ann Pace in “The Forgotten Middle Worker“, published in September.

Louisiana was not among the states studied but it very well could have been: The Workforce Alliance analysis of middle-skill job demands include Washington, Oregon, California, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Rhode Island — all of which have proven consistent with the national outlook, survey reports show.

Welcome to the future, America.

The mainstream media is either entirely oblivious to real job trends, or chooses to keep Americans in the dark because a future filled with ticket-takers, cashiers, healthcare aides, auto mechanics and electricians isn’t the kind of news we want to hear. To the contrary, syndicated New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman, in October, argued that “our schools are failing” to promote American competitiveness, in part, because we allegedly have a shortage of science, engineering, mathematics and other such high-tech grads. The “new untouchables“, by Friedman’s definition, are those who maintain an innovative and stable career in an increasingly cutthroat economy.

Message: Make schools more competitive. This will cure America’s globalized bellyache.

Improving student literacy, of course, is never a waste of time. What Friedman and others fail to take under consideration, however, is that few Americans work in the field they studied in college. That includes so-called STEM grads (science, technology, engineering and math majors).

But wait, it gets better!

Susan Hockfield, MIT’s president, takes the argument to a whole new level of absurdity in an October opinion piece for the Wall Street Journal in which she pleas for immigration reform to allow more foreign-born STEM grads to stay in the U.S. for permanent work as “jobs creators” and “Nobel winners”.

Who hires those foreign grads on H-1B visas? Microsoft, Google and other heavy hitters. This is the last thing most Americans call job creation. Hockfield’s suggestion reeks, instead, of domestic job displacement. Why? Because fewer U.S. citizens are likely to pursue challenging Ph.D.-level curriculum when their post-graduation economic stability is undercut by inexpensive foreign talent (insourcing/outsourcing). American-born students aren’t stupid, they’re pragmatic: What incentive is there to incur massive student loan debts if at best “employment insecurity” is the reward for the effort? And finally, to add insult to injury, independent studies from The Urban Institute, RAND Corp., Duke and Rutgers University, among others, say the so-called demand for high-tech and high-skill foreign workers doesn’t even exist — and that was true before the Great Recession cut loose thousands of qualified workers, dumping them back into the open market:

Is Anybody Safe?

Here’s how Eysink gets it right and the corporate and academic sources often quoted on this subject slant it wrong: Highly skilled foreign students aren’t coming to American universities to pursue jobs as lobby attendants or cashiers on the one hand, or the better paying “skilled trades”, such as auto mechanics, electricians and machinists, on the other. They are pursuing cream-of-the-crop professional skills whereas non-manufacturing jobs that require hands-on skills are relatively unscathed. After all, if your pipes burst you aren’t calling a plumber in China; your hairdresser will not be replaced anytime soon with a computerized robot; and your auto body repairperson is unlikely to be supplanted by a foreign grad student.

Nobody is arguing that these are ideal aspirations for Americans — only that middle-skill jobs are relatively safe from the insource/outsource phenomena. But when lettuce pickers and high-tech whiz kids are both here on work visas — if legally at all — watch out.

That should scare us.

When Eysink says that vocational and low-skill jobs are where much of the growth projections are, he’s only saying what everyone working on behalf of community and state employment agencies already knows.

What is telling is that Eysink’s neck has been slashed for sticking it out too far.

Eysink’s blunt outlook flies in the face of the education-as-a-panacea argument that has been the politically correct solution to all that ails the U.S. economy for at least 30 years now. Might tax incentives drive U.S. corporations to seek greener pastures offshore? Naw. Might looser environmental and human rights standards make foreign labor attractive? Naw. Might this be a predictable outgrowth of border-free trade? Naw. Let’s just dismiss all those larger-than-life realities and jump on the little guy at a state agency for saying what we already knew but are too afraid to admit.

The School of Hard Knocks

Following the conventional go-back-to-school advice, unemployed Americans are enrolling in schools of all stripe. Those educational pursuits often involve taking out student loans. If obtaining anything short of high-demand professional or trade skills isn’t going to cut it in this Brave New Economy — and the national jobless rates hover above 10 percent as many economists project — it suggests that many freshly minted grads and their return-to-school adult counterparts will not secure stable employment by which to repay educational debts.

The next consumer debt “bubble” to burst the American economy before the effects of the Great Recession are entirely behind us may well be a student lending bubble. Louisiana state Governor Bobby Jindal isn’t the only one reading the writing on the wall. Other states are following suit, attempting to prevent a tsunami of student loan defaults at a time when more prospective students are clamoring for a university education and the academic loans to fund them.

What makes misguided career advisement particularly unforgivable, in the end, is that we Americans are only doing what we’ve been told to do by media, educators and the President himself: Earn new or improved academic credentials in hopes of securing a better future even if it means a prohibitive amount of debt.

Higher education is never a waste in the aim of creating an informed, well-rounded citizen. Economic betterment is also a useful reason to invest in education — assuming one’s skills aren’t so easily ravaged by globalization. As for the rest of the American public?

A rude awakening. And another swipe at an already ailing economy to boot.

Ah, but thankfully there is a silver lining: All hope is not lost for children who fail to become the academic superstars this Brave New Economy demands. Friedman and his pontificating friends may not appreciate it now, but America’s new untouchable may be Joe the Plumber.

Judging from the state of America’s aged and crumbling infrastructure, we’re going to need more Joes than we know.

The title for this post comes from a song by a band called Five Iron Frenzy. One of my old favorites I grew up listening to. Google the band and check ‘em out sometime!

So I wanted to start fresh… here we go. Today was a typical day at work. I wake up at around 6am. I used to wake up at 5am but I moved closer to work last year. So anyways I get to work and check tools and get any turnover from the shift prior. As always while checking tools I always find some discrepancy that needs to be fixed no matter if it’s an inaccurate tool inventory or just rust or dirt in the box. One thing always leads to twelve others in my job! It can be annoying but can also help pass the time. I drew up a part to machine on the CNC… just ran out of time to actually cut it out. I’ll probably end up finishing it tomorrow as nobody likes to help anyone else out in my shop. Although there are a few exceptions to this statement.
I can’t believe it’s almost 10pm already!

Anyways I’m off to bed. I just wanted to start over with this whole thing. I find I’m often too negative and want to make a conscious effort to curb this habit!

Have a wonderful evening!

Work. Work. Work. Eventually, I’ll have something to show for it. No, I’m not fooling my

Work. Work. Work. Eventually, I’ll have something to show for it.
No, I’m not fooling myself. I’m just trying my hand at optimisim. It’s strange.

Seriously speaking, I do plan on going back to school after the first of the year. The current idea is to go for a CNC Machining certificate. I’d wanted to signup for the huge end-all/be-all, Machinist, know-everything degree they offer, but it takes 2 years to complete. Not a huge issue, but it’s best to start out small, I guess. At least this way, I can do a session, get the certificate, and hopefully, get a better job.

Why fabrication, you ask? Simple. (a) There’s always tons of machining jobs in the paper and for (b) better than I make now. Also, (c) I’ve always been interesting in getting involved with crafting metal, and no one is offering blacksmithing. And, to be perfectly honest, (d) my brother-in-law Bob is a hero of mine and he’s a machinist. Well, that’s putting it in simple terms, I guess, as Bob is much more than a machinist. Anyway, machining…Yeah.

If pressed, I’d say I want to go and take EACH AND EVERY COURSE offered. Okay, maybe not accounting, but I’m willing to give it a try after I complete a few languages, a crafting class, and learn to play the cello, but only in that order. Cooking and wielding appeal to me as well; maybe I should combine the two and create a Food Network show. I’m not nearly as annoying as most of their Tv Show hosts…

Alright, that’s a bit harsh, as the Food Network is one of the channels I watch most often. I do, however, only have a select few of hosts I enjoy on there. None of them can touch Anthony Bourdain though…

Speaking of food, we have decided to eliminate red meat from our diet. And no, I’m not missing it one bit. Heck, I was a vegetarian for a few years once and only returned to meat because I was living at home and it was much too difficult (at the time in my less mature mind) to try and go without. If I’d been able (ie: got off my lazy ass) to prepare my own meals, then maybe it’d been different. I dunno…

At the moment, we’re still eating Pork, Chicken, and Fish, but might eliminate those later down the line. There’s tons of veggie options out there. All you have to do is look. Kinda makes me want to start a garden; well, if I wasn’t too damn lazy to keep up with it, that is.

As for being a Vegan, I don’t think that’s in the cards for me. I don’t bismirch anyone who walks this path (I actually respect them a whole hell of a lot), but I don’t see an issue with dairy or eggs. Granted, I have problems with how a lot of these food products are brought to market (meaning animal abuses), but if done properly with respect to the animals, I guess it’s okay. Honestly, I haven’t thought about it that much. Maybe I should?

There’s a tiny part of me who’d love to go completely vegan, but the other part of me is extremely lazy. I seriously need to kick that guy’s ass…Yeah.

The other bits floating around is my overwhelming urge to ACTUALLY learn to play my electric bass. No more fiddling around; no more excuses. If I want to play music, then why shouldn’t I? No, I’ll probably never achieve anything super on an instrument, but it’s for the love of creating, right?

I love it hanging from my shoulder; my fingers on the strings, sliding down the fretboard. If only it was a little better quality. It’s not a bad instrument (a Kramer 250b), but I haven’t done any maintence on it. It’s been safe in the case when not in my hands, but there has to be little stuff to do. I dunno. I just know it makes a hell of a lot of buzzing/humming noise whenever I pluck a string. /shrug

Been looking at Fender Fretless Jazz basses. Not that I could afford it or ever get one, but I can still look. They’re nice. If I get a sugar daddy/momma, I’m gonna get them to buy me one.

And I’m writing again. It’s fantastic. I’ve missed having a creative outlet. Since I’m sleeping less (I try to allow myself 4-5 hrs/day), it gives me more time for other little stuff, or at least the feeling of not spending all my waking moments having to work at a shit job. It’s about scheduling, I guess. I just want to be able to both do the little things I love doing and spend time with my family.

Well, and, hopefully, get better at my writing. I know; it doesn’t show here, but this is my personal blog. It’s the literary equivalent of sweat pants…

And cooking. I’m trying to help in the kitchen more. I desperately want to learn to cook, but not in a open the box, fry stuff sort of way. I want to learn to season, improvise, and do all the interesting shit they do on television. Don’t worry though, I promise never use the term, EVO.

That’s enough for now, I guess. And look, I didn’t bitch about work one time. Yays!

If you don’t recognize who this is, know that it’s your old pal Christian Bale. You’ve seen him in American Psycho, Batman, and Terminator. You haven’t seen him in The Machinist, and whatever movie he’s shooting now.

I don’t know what it’s about, but my hunch is that he plays a former husk of his old self.

Besides acting, Bale is also famous for being a huge douche. And besides being a huge douche, he is lastly famous for shitting out all his insides for lead roles in indie movies that more people hear about than actually go see. I actually did see The Machinist when it came out and my thoughts were, “Christian Bale nearly killed himself for this?” So in my opinion another thing he should be famous for is making bad decisions.

At any rate, this reminded me of an anecdote where Dustin Hoffman came to the set of Marathon Man intentionally sleep deprived to shoot a scene where his character stayed up all night. The director told Hoffman, “Try acting. It’s easier.”

That’s actors for you. They’re so dumb they’ll even forget their job.

Next up: Christian Bale shows up to the set of the next Batman movie with enormous bat wings sewn into his bloodied back.

His and Hers … Honestly, I think that marriage vows should include something about interior de

His and Hers …

Honestly, I think that marriage vows should include something about interior decorating, “I thee eclectic take you the machinist, art deco to be my lawfully wedded design partner. Whether indifferent or impassioned, for richer or poorer, to find and to purchase from this day forward …” Integrating two individuals, who have two entirely different perspectives and approaches to life, no matter how refined their communications or inherently compatibility will always prove difficult.

How do you create a uniquely his and her space that is neither too masculine nor too feminine?! What constitutes a good balance, a happy medium of dual design?! What do you do when one person has a clear vision and the other is less adventurous?! Does marital compromise, compromise the end result or does it benefit the aesthetic?! How do you make a room functional and comfortable for both sexes?!

These are the issues I plan to conquer in our redesign and share my solutions here on The Brooklyn Brown Blog.

First off, I am an incredibly lucky Wife; my Husband is practically perfect in every way. I could literally count the number of disagreements we have had in the past six years on one hand, and although we both inherited a healthy amount of Irish stubbornness we fundamentally are very similar. There really has not been anything that we have not agreed on almost immediately; even throughout the wedding planning process. For us everything has always been easy and seamless. Obviously my complete and utter shock is understandable when my Husband and I had a knock-down, drag-out fight over throw pillows. {I know, I know, I know – throw pillows!?} It wasn’t so much to pillow or not to pillow, or the specific throw pillow, or even the colors and designs, nor down vs. poly … my Husband could not understand why they were so expensive. Talk about sticker shock! I explained to him that this particular throw pillow was actually a good value at $119, it was designed and constructed right here in the United States from eco-friendly materials even, it was down filled and the price included the down pillow insert. Here I thought this reasonable, fact laden explanation would have supported my argument for purchasing these throw pillows … WRONG!!! My Husband absolutely could not believe that throw pillows are sold empty and that people paid those prices for what is little more than a small pillowcase. This is definitely the point where I wish that I had even an iota of my Mother-in-law’s sewing abilities because even I would rather not spend a couple hundred dollars on throw pillows.

Here is the inflammatory throw pillow:

Room & Board

Obviously once my Husband realized that I in fact had not completely lost my mind and that though it was more expensive than either of us would have preferred the throw pillow would be a great addition to our living room.   I was initially enamored by the bright cheery color and the sophisticated, vintage inspired hand printed lace design.   For some reason it reminded me of a Monique Lhuillier gown.  The pillow is perfect for one of the chairs I plan to arrange in front of the fireplace, either an upholstered mid-century modern inspired chair from Room & Board or an antique regency hooded caned wing back chair I recently bought in Gramercy {will upload photo}

I offered to refrain from purchasing the pillow until we had officially decided on and ordered our living room sofa. There is another throw pillow that I am equally in love with that I plan on ordering; the question is whether or not I should order two for the sofa. Suggestions and comments are appreciated.

Below is the cohort a hand block printed creation by Galbraith & Paul for Room & Board:

Room and Board

How do you create a uniquely his and her space that is neither too masculine nor too feminine?!

Let me start by saying I have absolutely no idea. I haven’t found any specific, time-honored methods in my research, but I do have some theories that should be either proven or disproved at the end of this redesign process. I believe that pieces that are overtly either masculine or feminine should be balanced by the opposite and should be featured with neutrals. For example: in our bedroom we have a very limited space which is just large enough for our full size bed and 2 smaller scale bedside tables. Our bed is an antique metal bed from the early 1900s that has been stripped of its original paint. With its exposed metal the bed has a very machinist era feel, which is obviously why my Husband thinks it is great. I have had the bed since high school; my Mother found the headboard and footboard in a barn sale outside of Buffalo and purchased it for $35. I was horrified when my Mother unloaded the bed from the car … it was grotesque, had been painted several times and the most recent was an nasty brown. I might have actually cried, the thought of that being in my bedroom, but after removing the layers of paint and polishing the metal it was an interesting, antique bed. Over the past 10+ years it has developed a slight patina that has dulled the finish slightly, though I miss the gleaming metal it has a history for me now. Since the antique bed is more masculine with the coldness and hardness of the metal, I have balance it by adding the romance and femininity primarily through comfort and luxury. I prefer subtle feminine details in general, tonal whites with hemstitch and embroidery for bedding. I also have a collection of antique and vintage pillow cases to provide some color. I would like to add a light heather gray merino wool blanket for the colder months; however, our apartment usually is never cold enough to warrant that level of warmth. Some day! This is just one example of how David and I marry our individual tastes to create a cohesive space that we BOTH love.

A good balance really cannot be achieved until everyone feels comfortable and represented. This is the point where the newlywed couple learns the ever important lesson of selecting your battles because compromise is key and there will be items that you cannot for the life of you understand why your spouse wants to purchase or display it. Obviously there are major pieces that you cannot purchase until each of you are satisfied, items that are commonly and often used like mattresses, sofas, dining room chairs, etc. Your house should be filled with items that you love, but the same goes for your spouse … so work through any disagreements to find a solution rather than just settling for a compromise neither of you are invested in. Your space should be an equal reflection of you both individually and compliment the life that you have forged together. If you fill your home with compromises then you haven’t learned how to make decisions effectively as a couple. If your Husband doesn’t want to be involved or isn’t vocal about his likes or dislikes then look for ways to include him in the design by specifically selecting pieces that will appeal to him.

Rule #2: Never compromise for compromise sake, if neither of you are invested in a piece do not purchase it for good will alone.

This ridiculous trend of “man caves” is just disturbing and thank God it appears to be a suburban specific problem. Why would you relegate your Husband to one specific room in the house, this sounds like a fast track to alienation of affection and divorce court?! I definitely appreciate the easy allure of designing and decorating specific rooms entirely to individual preferences, but where that is lazy, it also surely lays the foundation for dysfunctional relationships when neither of you are both comfortable in the same space. The intention of marriage is for two individuals to become one and if that unity cannot be achieved in your home that is a distinct reflection of that same possible discord in your relationship. Eclectic spaces offer more character; no space should be decorated entirely in a single style. Any style or era can be easily combined. The answer is to find pieces that transition seamlessly between the aesthetics.

Use your creativity to find a solution – your space and marriage will be better for it!

Are you a machinist? Do you work with precision drills all day? If so this is the app for you! All day at work i was forced to look at the “Decimal Equivalents” chart hanging on the wall, not any more! With this “Decimal Equivalents” chart on your iphone or ipod touch you will not have to locate the chart on the wall anymore!

This chart starts with the smallest drill size of 0.05mm (0.0020 in decimal inches) and goes all the way up to the drill size of 1 inch (1.0000 decimal inches)

Also included are a few key equations like common conversions of SFM, IPR, PSI, GAL, Torque & HP.

Also end mill equations, unc/unf tap equations, drill equations, m/mf tap equations.

How do you wake up from a nightmare if you`re not asleep ?

DESCRIERE IMDB:
An industrial worker who hasn’t slept in a year begins to doubt his own sanity.

NOTA IMDB:
7.8/10

Merita vazut.

NOTA PERSONALA:
8,5
