Observe observe.

Matapang ba yan?

Employee: Ay opo boss! Eto try mo. *sabay abot ng alak*

Boss: *tumagay* Hindi naman matapang! Pang bakla! Pang bakla naman pala to eh!

Oh diba? Oh diba? Yan ang TNL.

Bakit nga ba kelangan magkaron ng TNL?

Meron bang Pekeng Lalake (PL)?

Rica – isang transexual. Biologically male, pero counted as a girl housemate.

Patrick – Married, may anal, isang TNL.

Rocky – Model, macho, dating construction worker, SUPER TNL.

Meron na tayong She-Man (pertaining to Rica) *sabay tawa*.

Nee.

Mijn lichaam deed pijn. Mijn hoofd zat vol. En ik was vooral misbaar. Mis-baar. Overbodig dus eigenlijk. Onbelangrijk.

Watch me!

Nah.

ok so here goes… I’m going to talk about where I come from to give you an understanding

ok so here goes…

I’m going to talk about where I come from to give you an understanding of myself.

I grew up in a Hispanic home. My mother very strong yet submissive and my father full of testosterone and macho-isms. I grew up second oldest of four girls. The oldest pretty full of talent, third oldest cute and full of charm, and the youngest beautiful and the baby.

Where did I fit in a family full of stars. I had no clue as to who I was. I did as was told. Yet I still had a bold streak in me. Whenever I could I would talk back to the parents and stand tall. Yet slowly as I got older I started to regress into myself. I started to have homosexual tendencies (whatever that means).

I would day dream of being with women. I would dream of dating them, loving them, and being in love with them. I remember my first few crushes. They were with the student teachers at school. My first crush was in fourth grade and the second crush was in fifth grade. Looking back… HOW COULD I NOT BE GAY!

All the signs were there. Every single one. But I grew up extremely religious! I was told from a very young age how wrong that was! How wrong it should be. How I will end up in the pits of hell if I declare to be gay.

I remember one time I before falling asleep my sister S (3rd oldest of the bunch the one with charm) and I were talking, as we did a lot before falling asleep, I had decided to tell her that I knew I was gay. Once I told her she got up IMMEDIATELY and told my mother. My mother then came into the room and told me why it was wrong, that that is not what God wanted for us and then prayed over me or it out of me. Whatever it was I realized from that day forward that I couldn’t be gay. That it was wrong and anything else that I tell my mother or sister S would come back and bite me in the ass.

So needless to say I stopped being that fully vibrant child because I started to hide a part of me. I’m not sure if its the best part of me but a good part of myself. The part of me that was full of life.

Well this has been my beginnings. I will keep it short. Next post I will add more.

Was suchen wir? Was erfüllt uns?

Leider gibt es dafür kein Patentrezept. Fragt eure Frauen.

About a month ago I was shopping (yeah big surprise, I know…). I walk into one of the stores and there’s this girl. She’s a hip 17-20 year old girl. She enters the moment I do and it so happens we look through all the clothes standing pretty close to each other the whole time. First thing I notice: she doesn’t pay attention to most of the clothes at all, the only pieces she has a closer look at are blue shirts…like every single blue shirt the store has to offer. It takes me less than 2 seconds to realize what’s going on. I get my mobile out immediately -because I’m a good friend and a dedicated blog-partner – and start texting Zelda:

I’m shopping. The girl next to me is looking at nothing except blue tops. She just finished reading Twilight and now she’s looking for a nice blue shirt. Because as we all know, Edward likes blue, a lot. Trust me, I can totally see it in her eyes!

So, has this happened to anyone else? You see someone doing something rather normal. No one around you is noticing anything strange. And then you have a closer look and the only thing going through your mind is “Oh girl, who do you think you’re kidding? You cannot fool me!” They think they’re so unsuspicious nobody’s gonna realize what they’re doing. In you’re faces girls! I’m so gonna see what you’re doing. You can’t hide anything from me cause I got a built-in radar for everything twi-related. I recognize it immediately. Cause I so went through this myself.

The super macho Volvo logo...only cool because Edward Cullen likes it

Have you been there as well? All the little things you change after reading Twilight. Without even noticing it at first. Like buying blue tops, because Edward likes blue. Or thinking silver Volvos are the coolest cars ever even though all the time you looked at them as macho cars because of they’re stupid logo. Or buying red apples instead of green ones, although you liked the green ones better all those years. But now you feel so smug getting out your red apple, like it’s some kind of private joke no one else will get (Well, I will of course if I’m anywhere near you…). Or like comparing every guy you meet to Edward Cullen. Does he have the topaz eyes? The pale skin? The marvellous body? Is he inhumanly beautiful and talks like he’s from another century? Is he unbelievably strong? And fast? Does he drive like a complete maniac? I bet you got some hits there… And last but not least the most important question: Does he sparkle in the sunlight? A bit unfair, I must admit, but nevertheless…who cares? Life isn’t fair, so what?

The reason why we love red apples

So how did reading -or watching- Twilight influence your life? Have you changed any habits? Have you decorated your bedroom like Edward’s so you can pretend you’re at the Cullen’s? Can’t wait to hear your stories. Cause honestly, we’re not one of those crazy fans, we’re still normal…kind of… So please just leave us a comment or send us an e-mail and tell us your little everyday twi-story! We won’t make fun of you, honestly! Well, unless you’re one of the really crazy ones, but then again I don’t think they would be embarrassed cause they’re already so 1st-hand-embarrassing themselves anyway…well, whatever…

a

Off to buy gold bed-sheets, just like Edward’s…
Saveyoursoul

a

Btw, just in case you didn’t notice (Yeah, like that would be possible…):

ONLY ONE WEEK TO GO!

Amerigo Jackson | 2009 Man of the Year | Muscle Hunks

2. Amerigo Jackson: 2009 Man of the Year

Amerigo Jackson: 2009 Man of the Year
Submitted by Mike on Thursday, 5 November 2009

http://www.mikesmusclemen.com/?p=850

Earlier this year, MuscleHunks ran a poll for subscribers to vote for their favorite bodybuilder. With over 23,000 votes collected, the final winner was the amazing Amerigo Jackson.

While the votes for 1st and 2nd place were close (Hans Hoffmann came 2nd) it was a convincing win at almost a quarter of the total responses. Sadly Macho Nacho was 3rd with 9% of the votes, which hardly seems fair. I’m sure we can get a win for Macho in 2010!

However, Amerigo was a deserving winner. He’s a classic MuscleHunks guy and embodies everything we love about them: model goodlooks, massive body, perfect muscle butt, and a cock that quickly gets hard and shoots plenty of cum.

Not surprisingly, MuscleHunks have released more Amerigo videos and photos this year, making it an appropriate time to showcase this god of a man.

Amerigo Jackson | Muscle Eden

3. Amerigo Jackson in Muscle Eden

Amerigo Jackson in Muscle Eden

Amerigo first appeared in MuscleHunks’ Muscle Eden series which are filmed at a South American resort and are among the most entertaining (and hot) video’s they’ve done. Interestingly for a newcomer, Amerigo’s scenes were with other guys. Also interesting that his first video opens with him on stage winning an award, but we never learn what it is he’s won.

The basic idea behind the first episode is that Amerigo, who’s also a businessman, arrives at the Muscle Eden resort where he’s instantly spotted by the scorching Scott Kirby and Pepe Mendoza who are very keen to watch and feel his muscles.. as you would!

Before you know it, they’ve all stripped down to their underwear. Scott is wearing a jockstrap, bless..

There’s lots of posing and some coy muscle-worship type of touching. That’s Pepe flashing his hot ass.

Which isn’t to say that getting a feel of Amerigo’s body had no effect on the boys though, because as Amerigo runs through his posing routine – and he’s clearly a professional – Scott and Pepe pull their rock-hard dicks out and start jerking off.

1. Expeditions

Illustration of the birthplace of Amerigo Vespucci.
Amerigo Vespucci was born and brought up by his uncle in the Republic of Florence in what is now Italy. Amerigo Vespucci was born in Montefioralle, a small village near Greve in Chianti, south of Florence.

Amerigo Vespucci worked for Lorenzo de’ Medici and his son, Giovanni. In 1492 he was sent to work at the agency of Medici bank in Seville, Spain.

At the invitation of Spain Vespucci participated as observer in several voyages that explored the east coast of South America between 1499 and 1502. In 1500 that King’s commander, Pedro Álvares Cabral, on his way to the Cape of Good Hope and India, had discovered Brazil at latitude 16°52′S. Portugal claimed this land by the Treaty of Tordesillas, and the King wished to know whether it was merely an island or part of the continent Spanish explorers had encountered farther north.

Vespucci, having already been to the Brazilian shoulder, seemed the person best qualified to go as an observer with the new expedition Manuel was sending. Vespucci did not command at the start – the Portuguese captain was probably Gonçalo Coelho – but ultimately took charge at the request of the Portuguese officers. Vespucci, in all probability, voyaged to America at the time noted, but he did not have command and as yet had no practical experience piloting a ship. On the first of these voyages he was aboard the ship that discovered that South America extended much further south than previously thought.

The expeditions became widely known in Europe after two accounts attributed to Vespucci were published between 1502 and 1504. In 1507, Martin Waldseemüller produced a world map on which he named the new continent America after Vespucci’s first name, Amerigo. In an accompanying book, Waldseemüller published one of the Vespucci accounts, which led to criticism that Vespucci was trying to upset Christopher Columbus’ glory. However, the rediscovery in the 18th century of other letters by Vespucci, primarily the Soderini Letter, has led to the view that the early published accounts could be fabrications, not by Vespucci, but by others.

In 1503 Amerigo sailed in Portuguese service again to Brazil, but this expedition failed to make new discoveries. The fleet broke up, the Portuguese commander’s ship disappeared, and Vespucci could proceed only a little past Bahia before returning to Lisbon in 1504. He did not sail again, and as there seemed no more work for him in Portugal he returned to Seville, where he settled permanently and where he had earlier married Maria de Cerezo. He was middle-aged, and the fact that there were no children might indicate that Maria was also past her youth.

2. Historical role
Columbus never thought Vespucci had tried to steal his laurels, and in 1505 he wrote his son, Diego, saying of Amerigo, “It has always been his wish to please me; he is a man of good will; fortune has been unkind to him as to others; his labors have not brought him the rewards he in justice should have.”

In 1508, after only two voyages to the Americas, the position of chief of navigation of Spain (piloto mayor de Indias) was created for Vespucci, with the responsibility of planning navigation for voyages to the Indies.

Two letters attributed to Vespucci were published during his lifetime. Mundus Novus (New World) was a Latin translation of a lost Italian letter sent from Lisbon to Lorenzo di Pierfrancesco de’ Medici. It describes a voyage to South America in 1501-1502. Mundus Novus was published in late 1502 or early 1503 and soon reprinted and distributed in numerous European countries. [2] Lettera di Amerigo Vespucci delle isole nuovamente trovate in quattro suoi viaggi (Letter of Amerigo Vespucci concerning the isles newly discovered on his four voyages), known as Lettera al Soderini or just Lettera, was a letter in Italian addressed to Piero Soderini. Printed in 1504 or 1505, it claimed to be an account of four voyages to the Americas made by Vespucci between 1497 and 1504. A Latin translation was published by the German Martin Waldseemüller in 1507 in Cosmographiae Introductio, a book on cosmography and geography, as Quattuor Americi Vespuccij navigationes (Four Voyages of Amerigo Vespucci). [2]

In 1508, King Ferdinand made Vespucci chief navigator of Spain at a huge salary and commissioned him to found a school of navigation, in order to standardize and modernize navigation techniques used by Iberian sea captains then exploring the world. Vespucci even developed a rudimentary, but fairly accurate method of determining longitude (which only more accurate chronometers would later improve upon).

In the 18th century three unpublished familiar letters from Vespucci to Lorenzo de’ Medici were rediscovered. One describes a voyage made in 1499-1500 which corresponds with the second of the “four voyages”. Another was written from Cape Verde in 1501 in the early part of the third of the four voyages, before crossing the Atlantic. The third letter was sent from Lisbon after the completion of that voyage.` [2]

Some have suggested that Vespucci, in the two letters published in his lifetime, was exaggerating his role and constructed deliberate fabrications. However, many scholars now believe that the two letters were not written by him but were fabrications by others based in part on genuine letters by Vespucci. It was the publication and widespread circulation of the letters that might have led Martin Waldseemüller to name the new continent America on his world map of 1507 in Lorraine. Vespucci used a Latinised form of his name, Americus Vespucius, in his Latin writings, which Waldseemüller may have used as a base for the new name, taking the feminine form America.(See also Naming of America.) Amerigo itself is an Italian form of the medieval Latin Emericus (see also Saint Emeric of Hungary), which through the German form Heinrich (in English, Henry) derived from the Germanic name Haimirich.[citation needed] But it might be Waldseemüller who named the continent after Richard Ameryk, who was the principal owner of John Cabot’s ship Matthew during his voyage of exploration to North America in 1497. [3]

The two disputed letters claim that Vespucci made four voyages to America, while at most two can be verified from other sources. At the moment there is a dispute between historians on when Vespucci visited mainland the first time. Some historians like German Arciniegas and Gabriel Camargo Perez think that his first voyage was done in June 1497 with the Spanish Pilot Juan de la Cosa. Vespucci’s real historical importance may well rest more in his letters, whether he wrote them all or not, than in his discoveries. From these letters, the European public learned about the newly discovered continent of the Americas for the first time; its existence became generally known throughout Europe within a few years of the letters’ publication. Why exactly he died is unclear. He died on February 22, 1512 in Seville, Spain.

3. Voyages

Portrait of Amerigo Vespucci, part of the Madonna della Misericordia by Domenico Ghirlandaio at the Ognissanti church in Florence
First Voyage

A letter published in 1504 purports to be an account by Vespucci, written to Soderini, of a lengthy visit to the New World, leaving Spain in May 1497 and returning in October 1498. However, modern scholars have doubted that this voyage took place, and consider this letter a forgery. [4] Whoever did write the letter makes several observations of native customs, including use of hammocks and sweat lodges. [5]

Second Voyage

About the 1499-1500, Vespucci joined an expedition in the service of Spain, with Alonso de Ojeda (or Hojeda) as the fleet commander. The intention was to sail around the southern end of the African mainland into the Indian Ocean. [6] After hitting land at the coast of what is now Guyana, the two seem to have separated. Vespucci sailed southward, discovering the mouth of the Amazon River and reaching 6°S, before turning around and seeing Trinidad and the Orinoco River and returning to Spain by way of Hispaniola. The letter, to Lorenzo di Pierfrancesco de’ Medici, claims that Vespucci determined his longitude celestially [7] on August 23, 1499, while on this voyage. However, that claim may be fraudulent, [7] which could cast doubt on the letter’s credibility.

Third voyage

The last certain voyage of Vespucci was led by Gonçalo Coelho in 1501-1502 in the service of Portugal. Departing from Lisbon, the fleet sailed first to Cape Verde where they met two of Pedro Álvares Cabral’s ships returning from India. In a letter from Cape Verde, Vespucci says that he hopes to visit the same lands that Álvares Cabral had explored, suggesting that the intention is to sail west to Asia, as on the 1499-1500 voyage. [6] On reaching the coast of Brazil, they sailed south along the coast of South America to Rio de Janeiro’s bay. If his own account is to be believed, he reached the latitude of Patagonia before turning back, although this also seems doubtful, since his account does not mention the broad estuary of the Río de la Plata, which he must have seen if he had gotten that far south. Portuguese maps of South America, created after the voyage of Coelho and Vespucci, do not show any land south of present-day Cananéia at 25° S, so this may represent the southernmost extent of their voyages.

After the first half of the expedition, Vespucci mapped Alpha and Beta Centauri, as well as the constellation Crux, the Southern Cross. [7] Although these stars had been known to the ancient Greeks, gradual precession had lowered them below the European horizon so that they had been forgotten. On his return to Lisbon, Vespucci wrote in a letter to d’Medici that the land masses they explored were much larger than anticipated and different from the Asia described by Ptolemy or Marco Polo and therefore, must be a New World, that is, a previously unknown fourth continent, after Europe, Asia, and Africa.

Fourth voyage

Little is known of his last voyage in 1503-1504 or even whether it actually took place.

4. Notes
a Europeans had long conceptualized the Afro-Eurasian landmass as divided into the same three continents we know today: Europe, Asia, and Africa. Once cosmographers realized that the New World was not connected to the Old (but before its true geography was fully mapped), they considered the Americas to be a single, fourth continent.
^ on a rainy and stormy day with calm seas, stars could be identified near the horizon to judge latitude/longitude celestially. Although South America’s continental shelf drops quickly into the deep ocean beyond the Orinoco River, the mouth is on the shelf, avoiding the ocean swells and waves which hinder visibility of stars near the horizon. Seamen who could navigate from Europe to America and back could chart stars on the horizon, especially for a cartographer like Vespucci.[citation needed]

Academics and scholarship

In academics and scholarship, an author-title-date information in bibliographies and footnotes, specifying complete works of other people. Copying of material by another author without proper citation or without required permissions is plagiarism.

Keeping a diary allows an individual to use references for personal organization, whether or not anyone else understands the systems of reference used. However, scholars have studied methods of reference because of their key role in communication and co-operation between different people, and also because of misunderstandings that can arise. Modern academic study of reference has been developing since the 19th Century.

Semantics

In semantics, reference is generally construed as the relationships between nouns or pronouns and objects that are named by them. Hence, the word “John” refers to John. The word “it” refers to some previously specified object. The object referred to is called the “referent” of the word. Sometimes the word-object relation is called “denotation”; the word denotes the object. The converse relation, the relation from object to word, is called “exemplification”; the object exemplifies what the word denotes. In syntactic analysis, if a word refers to a previous word, the previous word is called the “antecedent”.

Library science

In a library, “reference” may refer to a dictionary, an encyclopedia or other reference work, that contains many brief articles that cover a broad scope of knowledge in one book, or a set of books. However, the word reference is also used to mean a book that cannot be taken from the room, or from the building. Many of the books in the reference department of a library are reference works, but some are books that are simply too large or valuable to loan out. Conversely, selected reference works may be shelved with other circulating books, and may be loaned out.

References to many types of printed matter may come in an electronic or machine-readable form. For books, there exists the ISBN and for journal articles, the Digital object identifier (DOI) is gaining relevance. Information on the Internet may be referred to by a Uniform Resource Identifier (URI).

Librarians also conduct reference interviews at library reference desks, to help people find the information they seek. Help may also be available outside the library though virtual reference and digital reference services.

Wiki: Mendoza Province
Mendoza is a province of Argentina located in the western central part of the country in the Cuyo region. It borders to the north with San Juan, the south with La Pampa and Neuquén, the east with San Luis, and to the west with the republic of Chile; the international limit is marked by the Andes mountain range. Its capital city is the homonimous city of Mendoza.

Covering an area of 148.827 km2, it’s the seventh biggest province of Argentina with 5,35% of the country’s total surface. The population estimate for 2008 is 1.7 million habitants, which makes it the fifth largest populated province of the country, or 4,35% of the total national population.

1. History

Tomás Godoy Cruz, promoter of Argentine Independence and proactive early governor.
Evidence of inhabitants in the area date back to 2,000 years BC. On the basin of the Atuel River, in 300 BC lived a group of people that lived from hunting, and the cultivation of maize, pumpkins and beans.

Some of the tribes present at the arrival of the Spaniards include the Huarpes and Puelches. The first Spanish conquerors came around 1550 from the Viceroyalty of Peru. In 1561 the city of Mendoza was founded by the military man Pedro del Castillo.

With the creation of the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata, its 30,000 inhabitants became part of the intendency of Cuyo de Córdoba del Tucumán, but in 1813 the intendency of Cuyo separated from the other provinces.

José de San Martín was governor of the region and received important support from Mendoza when he led his Army of the Andes from Plumerillo in 1817 to cross the Andes in a campaign to release Chile from the “oppression of Spain”.

View of the Cabildo in the city of Mendoza, prior to the great quake of 1861.
The 1861 earthquake nearly destroyed the city of Mendoza, which had to be almost entirely reconstructed. In 1885 the railways reach the Province, allowing for easy transport for the region’s wines to the port of Buenos Aires. Until 1812 the province was part of Córdoba Province; from 1812-1820 it was known as Cuyo Province.

Following the development of wine industry in the province around 1900, Mendoza began to grow quickly attracting tens of thousands of European immigrants, particularly Spaniards. In 1939 the National University of Cuyo, one of the most important of the country, was founded.

Mendoza grape harvest, circa 1890.
Partly in reaction to Pres. Juan Peron’s populist policies, some of which taxed agriculture heavily to finance urban development and public works, Mendoza landowners formed the conservative Democratic Party, which secured the Vice-governor’s post in 1958. Increasing their presence in the Mendoza Legislature, the Democrats became an obstacle to progressive Governor Ernesto Ueltschi, an ally of president Arturo Frondizi’s. With majorities in both houses by 1961, they had Gov. Ueltschi removed and Democrat Vice-governor Francisco Gabrielli appointed in his stead. Elected governor in his own right in 1963, Gov. Gabrielli was deposed following the June 1966 coup against Pres. Arturo Illia; but still benefiting from conservative credentials, he was appointed de facto governor by the same military regime in 1970.

In contrast to the pragmatism that had distinguished his 1963-66 term, Gabrielli governed with a hard line, feezing state salaries and ordering large utility rate increases, used the Mendoza police to repress dissent and took foreign policy prerogatives like collaborating with Chilean saboteurs opposed to their country’s new Marxist president, Salvador Allende. These events came to a head in April, 1972, however, when violent protests forced the newly unpopular Gabrielli to resign. [2]

Upon the return to democracy in March 1973, Mendoza voters turned to a left-leaning Peronist, Alberto Martinez Baca. Quickly enacting needed labor and land reforms, Martinez Baca, however, made the mistake of appointing affiliates of the extreme-left Montoneros movement, an organization whose armed wing had perpetrated a string of violent crimes since 1970 (and would continue to do so). Alarmed by this move from the otherwise pragmatic Marinez Baca, President Peron had him removed in June 1974.

Becoming very independent-minded following these two disappointments, Mendoza voters elected centrist Radical Civic Union as well as populist Justicialist (Peronist) Party lawmakers since Argentina’s return to democracy in 1983. Though Mendoza has generally prospered since then, its critical wine industry was left reeling from the 1983 near-collapse of state-owned vintner GIOL, whose dictatorship-era receivers had run the wine conglomerate (then the world’s largest outside Europe) and accumulated over US$6 billion of debt. [3] GIOL closed in 1991.

Then-Governor Julio Cobos (left) and the poncho-clad Pres. Nestor Kirchner in Mendoza, 2004.
Elected in 2003, Radical Civic Union governor Julio Cobos highlighted this independent sentiment by parting ways with many in his party and endorsing newly-elected Peronist president Nestor Kirchner’s policies in 2004. Over the opposition of his party, Julio Cobos was the running mate to first lady Cristina Fernández de Kirchner of the Front for Victory in the presidential elections of October 2007. Fernández and Cobos won in the first round and Cobos is now Vice President of Argentina. He was replaced by pro-Kirchner Justicialist Celso Jaque as governor. The province is represented by three senators in the Argentine Senate, currently María Perceval, Ernesto Sanz and Mónica Troadello. Mendoza is represented by 10 deputies in the Argentine Chamber of Deputies.

On July 16, 2008, Vice-president Cobos stunned observers by casting the tie-breaking vote against a presidentially-sponsored measure in the Senate that would have raised export taxes on an array of agricultural goods.

2. Geography and climate

Villavicencio.
The geography of the province descends from 6959 meters at the summit of Aconcagua to the semi-flat lands of the east. A series of longitudinal valles, such as the Uspallata, separate the Andes from the Precordillera lower mountains. To the east, the Cuyean plains are crossed by tributaries of the Desaguadero River. Other important rivers include Mendoza River, Tunuyán River, Diamante River and Atuel River.

A view of the snowy Andes.
The climate is continental, sunny and dry in the entire territory of the province, with warm summers and relatively cold winters. The arid soil due to the scant precipitation and the great temperature difference between day and night allows mainly xerophytes and few trees to grow. The annual precipitation lies between 150 and 350mm, and hail is a significant, and not uncommon, problem in the regional viticulture. There are fertile lands surrounding the basins of the many rivers born in the glaciers of the Cordillera.

Different wind fronts affect the landscape, mainly the Zonda wind, but also the mild Pampero, the warm Viento Norte and, in winter, the very rare Sudestada from the Southeast. The latter wind mostly affects the pampas.

3. Economy

Vineyard under the Andes.
Famed worldwide for its viticulture (with 70% of the 1.5 billion liters in Argentine wine production), [4] the Mendoza economy (Argentina’s fifth largest) is, however, quite diversified. Its 2006 output was estimated at US$13.8 billion, or, US$8,720 per capita (about the national average). [5] Agriculture, to be sure (though 7% of the total economy) [6] , has long accounted for much of Menodoza’s foreign exchange earnings (followed closely by tourism, mainly from Chile). Besides wine, other important crops (mainly for the Argentine market) are apples, pears, tomatoes, onions, plums, olives, cherries, peaches and quince. Apiculture, with 30,000 beehives, is another growing activity favoured by Mendoza’s dry weather.

Villavicencio Hotel and Hot Springs (closed since 1978, now the garden is a resort).
Mining is important to the Mendoza economy and has grown sharply in recent years, now accounting for 22% of output in 2005 (nearly 5 times the national average) [6] . Fourteen percent of the national reserves of petroleum are in Mendoza, also home to large-scale mining of lime and uranium. Manufacturing has long contributed to the province’s prosperity and still accounts for 16% of the economy. [6] Mendoza’s main industries are, of course, wine production with 1,200 wineries turning out 1.1 billion liters in 2005, followed by canned fruits, a large petroleum refinery (in Luján de Cuyo), cement and others.

Las Leñas ski resort, one of the best-known in the world.
Mendoza’s services sector is somewhat less developed and diversified than the national average. Tourism, long active in the scenic province, has, since the 2002 devaluation of the Argentine peso, become one of its most important sources of income, with around 700,000 visitors per year.[citation needed] The main attractions are the Las Leñas ski centre, the Aconcagua mountain, and the provincial parks of the Atuel Canyon, Puente del Inca, Guaymallén and others. With the recent developments in Argentine wine production, wine tourism has also become very popular, with numerous wine-tourism oriented hotels appearing throughout the province. Wineries generally offer free tours of the premises with wine-tastings at the conclusion of the tour. In the wine-producing region, the Fiesta de la Vendimia (grape harvest festival) receives many visitors in late February or early March. The Christ the Redeemer of the Andes statue in the mountains on the Chilean border is a destination for many excursions.

The province is divided into 18 local government areas called departments (Spanish: departamentos). Each is divided into one or more districts, and has an Executive Department (led by a mayor or intendente) and a Deliberative Department (legislature) to run local services. The mayor is elected by a simple majority of the popular vote every four years, while half of the Deliberative body is renewed every two years (re-election is allowed in both cases). The departments can make regulations in accordance with the provincial constitution and the Organic Law of Municipalities, but financially cannot levy taxes, but only charge for services. The most populated cities within a department may have citizens’ committees appointed by the municipal government to perform certain functions. [7]

Mendoza is a Spanish surname of Basque origin, and a place name. The Portuguese version is Mendonça. It means Cold Mountain, from basque words mendi (mountain) and hotza (cold) (Mendoza being mendi+hotza). When related to Spain, it usually applies to the descendants of the Mendoza family, an old basque noble family originally from Alava, Mendoza not being a common surname in Spain. However, during the conquest of America, many Mendozas went there, and their surname spread, now being quite common in Hispanic America. This name may refer to:

Mendoza (pronounced /mɛnˈdohsəh/) is the capital city of Mendoza Province, in Argentina. It is located in the northern-central part of the province, in a region of foothills and high plains, on the eastern side of the Andes. As of the 2001 census [INDEC], Mendoza’s population was 110,993. The metropolitan population was 848,660 in 2001, making Greater Mendoza the fourth largest census metropolitan area in the country.

Ruta Nacional 7, the major road running between Buenos Aires and Santiago, runs through Mendoza. The city is a frequent stopover for climbers on their way to Aconcagua (the highest mountain in the Western Hemisphere) and for adventure travelers interested in mountaineering, hiking, horseback riding, rafting, and other sports. In the winter, skiers come to the city for its easy access to the Andes.

Two of the main industries of the Mendoza area are wine making and olive oil production.

1. History
On March 2, 1561, Pedro del Castillo founded the city and named it Ciudad de Mendoza del Nuevo Valle de La Rioja after the governor of Chile, Don García Hurtado de Mendoza. [2]

Mendoza cabildo, prior to the 1861 earthquake.
Before the 1560s the area was populated by three tribes, the Huarpes, the Puelches, and the Incas. The Huarpes devised a system of irrigation that was later developed by the Spanish. This allowed for an increase in population that might not have otherwise occurred. The system is still evident today in the wide trenches that run along the city streets. It is estimated that fewer than 80 Spanish settlers lived in the area before 1600, but later prosperity increased due to the use of indigenous and slave labor, and the Jesuit present in the region. When nearby rivers were tapped as a source of irrigation in 1788 agricultural production increased. The extra revenues generated from this, and the ensuing additional trade with Buenos Aires, no doubt led to the creation of the state of Cuyo in 1813 with José de San Martín as governor. It was from Mendoza that San Martin organized the army with which he won the independence of Chile and Peru. [3]
Mendoza suffered a severe earthquake in 1861 that killed at least 5,000 people. The city was rebuilt, incorporating innovative urban designs that would better tolerate such seismic activity. Mendoza was rebuilt with large plazas and wider streets and sidewalks than any other city in Argentina. Avenida Bartolomé Mitre and additional small plazas are examples of that design. Tourism, wine production, and more recently the exploitation of hard commodities such as oil [4] and uranium [5] ensure Mendoza’s status as a key regional center.

2. Culture

General San Martín Park
Mendoza has several museums, including the Museo Cornelio Moyano, a natural history museum, and the Museo del Área Fundacional (Historical Regional Foundation Museum) on Pedro del Castillo Square. The Museo Nacional del Vino (National Wine Museum), focusing on the history of winemaking in the area, is 17 km southeast of Mendoza in Maipú. The Casa de Fader, a historic house museum, is an 1890 mansion once home to artist Fernando Fader in nearby Mayor Drummond, 14 km south of Mendoza. The mansion is home to many of the artist’s paintings.

The Fiesta Nacional de la Vendimia (The National Grape Harvest Festival) occurs in early March each year. Part of the festivities include a beauty pageant, where 17 beauty queens from each department of Mendoza Province compete, and one winner is selected by a panel of about 50 judges. The queen of Mendoza city’s department does not compete and acts as host for the other queens.

In 2008 National Geographic listed Mendoza as one of the top 10 historic destinations in the world. [6]

3. Urban structure

View of Mendoza city centre.
The city is centered around Plaza Independencia (Independence Plaza) with Avenida Sarmiento running through its center east-west, with the east side pedestrianized (peatonal). Other major streets, running perpendicular to Sarmiento, include Bartolomé Mitre, San Martín, and 9 de Julio (July 9th), those running parallel include Colón, and Las Heras. Four smaller plazas, San Martín, Chile, Italia, and España, are located 2 blocks off each corner of Independence Plaza. Unique to Mendoza are the exposed stone ditches, essentially small canals, which run alongside many of the roads supplying water to the thousands of trees that provide welcome shade.

The Parque General San Martín (General San Martín Park) was designed by Carlos Thays. Its grounds include a zoo, football stadiums, and the Universidad Nacional de Cuyo. A view of the city is available from the top of Cerro de la Gloria (Mt. Glory).

4. Transportation

Trolleybus service, Mendoza.
Mendoza is 1,037 kilometres from Buenos Aires (13 hours by bus) and 380 kilometres from Santiago, Chile (6-7 hours by bus). Mendoza also has an International Airport. It takes less than 2 hours to fly from Buenos Aires and less than 1 hour from Santiago.

The public transport system includes buses, trolleybuses and taxis. The trolleybuses are more comfortable than the city buses, but are slower, not as numerous nor is the system as extensive. In 2008, Translink of Vancouver, Canada sold their old trolleybus fleet to Mendoza. [7]

A heritage railway, El Tren del Vino (The Wine Train) is being planned which will also provide local transportation, it will run through wine producing districts of Mendoza. [8]

4. 1. Transandine Railway
Main article: Transandine Railway

Mendoza’s development was helped partly due to its position at the start of the Transandine Railway linking it to Santa Rosa de Los Andes in Chile. The only railway operable between Argentina and Chile, after many years of inactivity, is currently under restoration and testing for its revival as a freight line by Belgrano Cargas. [9] [9] [10] [11] [12]

The Transandine Railway is a 1,000 mm (3 ft 3+3⁄8 in) metre gauge line, with sections of Abt rack, whilst the railways it links with are both 1,676 mm (5 ft 6 in) broad gauge. A journey from Buenos Aires to Chile involved two breaks-of-gauge, and therefore two changes of train, one at Mendoza, and the other at Santa Rosa de Los Andes.

4. 2. Metrotranvía
Main article: Metrotranvía of Mendoza

The city has also begun the construction of a new tramway line, the Metrotranvía de Mendoza, which will have a route of 12.5 km and will link five areas of the Greater Mendoza conurbation. The opening of the system is scheduled for 2011. [13]

5. In film
Mendoza is referenced in the 1942 Disney movie Saludos Amigos.

Mendoza is referenced in the 2006 acclaimed film Children of Men in which it is reported that the parents of the youngest person on the planet hail from the city of Mendoza in a bleak 2027.

French director Jean-Jacques Annaud shot his 1997 film, Seven Years In Tibet, in Mendoza. Dozens of spectacular sets ranging from a 220-yard (200 m) long recreation of the Tibetan capital city of Lhasa (built in the foothills of the Andes), to a 9,000-square-foot (840 m2) recreation of the legendary Hall of Good Deeds in the Potala, the ancient palace of the Dalai Lama (built in an abandoned garlic warehouse outside the city).

6. Climate
Mendoza has wet summers and drier winters. Average temperatures for January (summer) are 32°C (90°F) during daytime, and 18.4°C (65°F) at night. July (winter) the average temperatures are 14.7°C (58°F) and 2.4°C (36°F), day and night respectively. Despite the intensity of agriculture, made possible due to irrigation from major rivers, Mendoza is classified as semi-arid. Annual rainfall is 223.2 mm.
