This is the commercial that introduced that Mac to the world. Both the concept and production of this commercial were incredible but I am surprised at the poor quality of their tag line “… and you’ll see why 1984 wont be like 1984″

~/Library/KeyBindings/DefaultKeyBinding.dict

Y en él escribiremos:

{
"\UF729" = "moveToBeginningOfLine:";
"$\UF729" = "moveToBeginningOfLineAndModifySelection:";
"\UF72B" = "moveToEndOfLine:";
"$\UF72B" = "moveToEndOfLineAndModifySelection:";
"\UF72C" = "pageUp:";
"\UF72D" = "pageDown:";
}

De esta forma tendremos las teclas de navegación en nuestro teclado Apple comportándose como en un PC.

We need to make our life easier by creating consistency for every machine. What this means is every

We need to make our life easier by creating consistency for every machine. What this means is every machine you try to use, whether it be yours or your colleagues, the environment will be the same when you sit down to help them with something. This is very important if you’re a Development Manager and you’re trying to help one of your staff.

This is one of several posts in regards to this subject.

I really don’t use MySQL too much. At work, I have Oracle and Sybase. But I think I’m going to use it in the example code that I post later. Because we’ll be using Hibernate, for the most part, it really doesn’t matter. Hibernate hides the nuances of each type of database from us (for the most part). Anyway, the real reason has to do with our earlier PHP post and a post about WordPress that I’ll be making later. So, here we’re going to install MySQL.

Here we’re going to install MySQL for the Macintosh. We’ll go back and do it for Windows in a later post.

First off, we need the binary. We’ll go to the MySQL website to download the 5.1 MySQL version file called “mysql-5.1.41-osx10.5-x86.dmg”. After we’ve gotten that downloaded double click it and we’ll see this window after the image has been mounted:

Mounted MySQL Package

Now click on the icon for “mysql-5.1.41-osx10.5-x86.pkg” and you should see this window:

We could go through the process of starting MySQL by hand but it’s just as easy to reboot our machine. That way we’ll know it starts automatically for us as well. So, reboot!

After you’ve rebooted, let’s start up a “Terminal” window. Once that’s done, type in the following command:

ps -aef | grep mysql

MySQL doesn’t have a Graphical User Interface so a lot of what we’ll be doing is via the command line. Because of this, we need to put the /usr/local/mysql/bin in our PATH environment to make life easier for us. We do this by cd-ing to the /etc directory and then editing the profile file using vi (via sudo). We’ll be executing these commands:

cd /etc

In this file, you should see a line that says PATH. You want to put the line “/usr/local/mysql/bin:” right after the = sign of that line. You should see a window that looks like this:

MySQL 5.1.41 Change PATH

Save it and end your Terminal session and start a new one so that this will take effect for you.

Now that the MySQL server is started, we need to get in and do some things for security reasons. The server starts with no password for the “root” user and it also has an anonymous account. We need to fix those issues. So we start up a “Terminal” window again and we’ll be executing the following command to get us into the MySQL interface:

mysql -u root

and the first thing we’re going to do is delete the anonymous users by running this command:

DELETE FROM mysql.user WHERE user=”;

your window will look like this:

MySQL 5.1.41 Delete Anonymous Users

And finally we need to get in and change the password for our root user. Start up a “Terminal” window and get in MySQL by this command:

mysql -u root

then run the following command

UPDATE mysql.user SET password = PASSWORD=(‘xxxxxx’);

Be aware here though. First off, you’re changing ALL the passwords of ALL the users in your database. This is a fresh install so that’s OK but if for some reason you’re following this and it’s not a fresh install then be aware. Secondly, I’m changing the password to ‘xxxxxx’, you’ll want to change it to something real.

How will we know that our password has been changed? We now have to add the “-p” argument when we try to get into MySQL from now on else we can’t get in. So we’ll be executing a command like this

mysql -u root -p

and the server will now ask you for the password when you try to get into your server.

The window for this will look like the following for these commands:

MySQL 5.1.41 Change root Password

We now have MySQL installed on our Apple Macintosh.

Sabe, essas diferenças me incomodam taaanto…

Essas coisas me deixa muito chateado…

Porque apesar de ter uma diferença nos preços dos países no mundo todo, no Brasil, essa diferença é “gritante”.

I have been working hard over the last month updating my website: luxBorealis.com. Have a look if yo

I have been working hard over the last month updating my website: luxBorealis.com. Have a look if you haven’t done so lately. Many people have asked how I created such an interactive website with lots of photos. They wonder how I could ever have time to do all that.

It’s easy… I use iWeb. “What’s iWeb?” is the next question. And I tell them about this great app that comes free with every Apple Macintosh computer as part of their iLife suite. then sounding somewhat chagrined, they say “Oh, your a Mac user.” “Is there anything like that for Windows?” Not that I know of…

Listen, iWeb isn’t perfect. It is easy to make webpages and do all kinds of cool things, but it’s not great on maintenance and it’s lousy for blogs (at least, I found it clunky although I know others who swear by it, but then they work directly through MobileMe; I don’t). “What’s all this .Mac stuff?” you ask. Let me back up…

The things I love about iWeb are:

I can make a very cool webpage in minutes – colours, boxes, fonts – it’s free-form design without the constrictions of typical web authoring software. It’s as easy as word processing – well Mac word processing which is so much more fun and creative than Office word processing. You see, Macs have fun and creativity built into every application they create. You can always tell a Windows/Office document from a Mac doc (whether it’s word processing, a presentation or a webpage). Mac creations are, well, creative, because Mac has made adding graphics and shadows and colours so easy. So it shows up in the work Mac people do.

I can add photos directly from iPhoto (another Mac app that comes free with every Mac – very powerful photo library software with very good editing capabilities – more on iPhoto another time because it’s not the be all and end all, but then again, it’s free!!). When I add photos, they are already formatted for viewing as thumbnails, or in a slideshow – all with the click of a mouse. Actually, come to think of it, I can drag and drop images from almost anywhere onto a photo page and have iWeb give them structure. It really is a great app for photo galleries!

I can add Google maps and Google Adsense links with only a few clicks.

I can easily create my own page design. iWeb comes with dozens of great templates, but I’m a bit of a maverick when it comes to design. I like to tweak things which I can do with iWeb. At times, the pages try to revert (e.g. whenever I create a new textbook it defaults to the template’s text) but a few copy and pastes or style copy and pastes and I’m back to where I want to be. iWeb is actually far more flexible than most people realize – just take a look at my pages. Sure there are constraints, but remember – it’s a free app!!

I have complete access to my font library – any size, colour or font I want. If I want shadows, I just click the checkbox for shadows then adjust them however I want. Fonts that don’t display properly on other computers are, for the most part, converted to graphics.

It’s free. I have I told you yet? It’s free with every Mac. Sure Macs cost more to begin with so yo would expect some freebies, but the again, when you buy a Mac you don’t usually need to upgrade anything else because it comes with enough ram and a large enough hard drive and a decent video card and all the connectivity your need including wireless right out of the box. You see, Macs are cutting edge – they lead the industry in most aspects.

Things I don’t like about iWeb. Hey it’s not perfect, but it is free!

As I mentioned above, iWeb is slow for maintenance and updating web pages. Because of the file structure, every time I create a change, I need to up more files then necessary and that takes time. If I make one small graphical change on a number of pages on a site (like I’e been doing recently) I really need to upload the whole shebang to avoid missing content.

iWeb is the pits with search engine optimization (SEO). You cannot put in custom titles or metadata such as descriptions or keywords. I do this through Rage iWebSEO. It’s a great little app and it’s free. Why Apple doesn’t build this into iWeb is a mystery.

iWeb is too tied to the MobileMe service – at least iWeb ‘08 is which is what I’m using. Apparently, iWeb ‘09 has an FTP client that allows more web freedom. That being said, I’m a MobileMe subscriber and love the ease of use, but uploading can be a bit slow sometimes. Also, some services with iWeb such as counters and comments are also only available if you upload directly to MobileMe – which is something I don’t do because I want to optimize my pages using iWEbSEO. So, I need to publish to a folder first, the run iWebSEO, the upload. Not the smoothest, but definitely worth it in the end.

iWeb pages seem a bit bloated. They are big bits of code and it uses png file format for graphics (larger than jpgs), but I don’t have a workaround yet. Thank goodness most people are on broadband now.

iWeb pages do not always zoom well. I can’t do much about this, either.

So I’m using iWeb and can’t really see an alternative in my future. I’ve tried Rapidweaver but it’s not wysiwyg enough for a visual guy like me. I’ve tried Shutterbug, but it seems too clunky for me. For years I made all my websites with Adobe GoLive. It has since been replaced with Dreamweaver which I really should learn but it seems overly complicated for what I want to to. I invested many, many hours into learning html and web authoring only to have that knowledge become obsolete. Rather than reinvesting that time, I’ve decided to use iWeb and get great-looking pages right out of the box.

Is this an advert for Macs? Well, yes and no. I’m not paid to say this. But I believe the more people know about a product, the better they can come to their own conclusions. This is what works for me; if it doesn’t work for you, well, that’s okay too.

Google OS: Microsoft was never the anti-Christ. Their EULA (end-user license agreement) has always

Google OS: Microsoft was never the anti-Christ. Their EULA (end-user license agreement) has always stated that while they would capture information about people’s computers it would be done anonymously. Given that Microsoft has a lot of money they would have let themselves open to a boatload of lawsuits had they fibbed on that. Google, on the other hand, could be seen as Evil Incarnate. Google’s EULA states that not only will they collect information about you (and not just your computer) but that they will share it with 3rd parties. The announcement today of the new Google operating system should send shivers to your spine if you believe in privacy. Google wants you do to save all your files on their computers, not yours. This is “cloud computing”, an apt name given that clouds are nebulous, and so is any concept of privacy. If you want to maintain your privacy, might I suggest Windows, Macintosh OS, or Linux?

Tim Lincecum Wins Another Cy Young: I’m happy for Tim Lincecum. Here’s a longhaired doper who doesn’t follow the rules for “proper” pitching, and he not only makes it into that rarified world of super-good baseball pitchers, but he’s an all-around nice guy, too. Tim: Don’t ever change. Especially, don’t cut the long hair. Don’t sell out.

UC Fee Hikes & Trash: Over 1,000 students have been staging protests against fee hikes. A photo in today’s SF Chronicle shows that students piled trash in a building in protest. Solution: If students really want to do something valuable they will stop the protests and brainstorm about how to get those tuition fees down. Alliances with businesses? Licensing agreements? Figuring out ways to cut expenses? Who knows? What I do know is that UC has some of the brightest minds on the planet. Surely they can come up with something besides piling up trash.

Cancer Guidelines: Women are hopping mad. They’re not as sick as they think they are, or as perhaps they want to be. And now the American Cancer Society has gotten into the act, calling the U.S. government’s cancer screening reduction dangerous. Well, perhaps it’s dangerous to the Cancer Society’s bottom line. After all, they get donations because people are worried about cancer. If people worried less, the Cancer Society makes less money. Solution: Go with the guidelines. They’re based on research. As Dr. Dean Edell says, “Eat, Drink, and Be Merry”. Replace the gloom and doom with a bit more positive outlook. After all, the government has recognized that the cancer rate is low enough that the extra screening people had been doing doesn’t help anybody.

I received my “replacement computer” today (same hard drive, new shell) for my beloved Mac. And that’s fine. But I currently have no sound on my computer because the shell has locked itself in mute mode. In addition, it is moving PAINFULLY SLOWLY, which has made effective blogging incredibly challenging. So I’m cuttin’ and runnin’. It’s nearly the weekend, and it’s time for me to give up.

So I leave you with this evening musical interlude (which I would title: “Wake Me Up When My Computer Loads”) and hope you have a wonderful weekend. Talk to you next week.

Users of Macintosh computers running OS X will most likely find a version of the Safari Web Browser

Users of Macintosh computers running OS X will most likely find a version of the Safari Web Browser preinstalled on their system. However, Safari is also available to download and install on Windows based computers as well.

According to the Safari Web Site, Safari boosts having 150 features, however most of these are things most web browsers are supposed to do anyway. Other features aren’t so much features as in stuff you can use, but features as in the browser’s technical abilities. (Stuff a newbie doesn’t need to understand – but they’re listed on their website if you want to go check them out.)

Some of what you can expect to find with the latest version of Safari (version 4) include tabbed browsing, bookmark library manager, history, and spelling and grammar checking. But, it’s beauty is found with some other features.

For example, the Top Sites (when used on computers with graphic cards that can truly handle it) takes Opera’s speed dial to the next level by giving the user a 3D graphical interface similar to some of the cool stuff you can do with the iPhone.

For the most part, the rest of what sets Safari apart from other browsers lies with the technology inside it. As new internet technologies are created, web browsers must keep up. Apple’s Safari, however, appears to be on top of things.

While I often complain about being technologically challenged, I also consider myself and others like me Computer Pioneers.
I went from a Commodore 64 in 1982 to an Amiga, then a Macintosh, (one of several), to my current PC.
The Commodore, (Wisdom of the day- who would ever need more than 64 megabytes?) worked like a typewriter, except you didn’t have a carriage return and the words parsed all over the place. You couldn’t always see the beginning of your sentence, or the end of your sentence when it jumped as you were typing. Disconcerting. This beauty cost me about $1,000 plus classes to learn how to use it.

To print on my C Itoh printer, I had to program the page like this:

SP1:pp66:pg55:lm15:re70:vpt< (manually <> (return) eleven times.

For a different program you had to reset the printer turning on and off various dip switches. Instructions: Bend over the machine to read from left to right, with cord to the right, hold a flashlight and use a fingernail or small screwdriver to set the switches.

The formula read like this:

SW1 8,7,2-closed. 1,3,4,5,6 open.
SW2 2,4,7-closed. 1,3,5,6,8 open.
(Change #8 for programs that double space to #6 on switch 2.

You had to know braille to figure out what was off and on. The flashlight, if you could hold it, didn’t help much.

To boot up my word processing program I had to type in a load formula, no auto boot.
I guess it isn’t such a big deal when I think about today’s long singular lines, no caps, passwords, some numbers and signs, but, at the time, it was daunting and complicated and didn’t make intuitive sense. Nothing popped up automatically in your address line. You didn’t even have an address line. If you pressed the wrong button you could easily lose your work. Now, at least, you get a window that asks if you want to destroy, or delete work. Yes, they were quite primitive, those first computers.

We spent the money, helped iron out the bugs, kept buying the next generation up until they could be mass produced inexpensively, so everyone could own a computer. We fought with those machines and cried over tossing them for the next best thing. We were the pioneers.

What the heck, learning truly is the best entertainment. I’m surprised I got from there to here.
I’m grateful for my computer. I don’t do anything fancy on it except manipulate pictures, which I love. Its way better than the old typewriter. Thank you Bill Gates and Steve Jobs and half that generation for teaching an old dolly new tricks.

Where I work, I’m asked to work on other technologies all the time. My main focus is to work in JAVA/J2EE but sometimes I have to work in other programming languages. PHP is one of those languages.

Today we’re going to set up our Apple Macintosh for working and debugging PHP in NetBeans. I’ll show you how to set up PHP for Windows use in a later post.

In this file I’m going to refer to “<username>”. This will be your username on your laptop similar to how mine is “thcampbell”

If you didn’t know it already, your Apple Macintosh already has an Apache HTTP web server on it. You can get to it by going to “System Preferences” and then clicking on “Sharing”. From there you’ll see something that says “Web Sharing” and it is probably off.

Web Sharing on Apple

Click on the check box next to the Web Sharing line to turn it on:

Web Sharing on Apple

After you’ve done that, click on the link that’s presented on this page or go to “http://localhost/~<username>” in your favorite browser. You should see a screen like this:

Apache HTTP Web Server on Apple

Ok, we have the server running and believe it or not, PHP is also on your Apple Macintosh already. We just have to enable it. So start up a “Terminal” session and cd to the “/etc/apache2″ directory. Then execute (via sudo) the vi command to edit the file “httpd.conf”:

Edit httpd.conf using sudo/vi

After you’re editing the file, find the line that looks like the following:

#LoadModule php5_module libexec_apache2/libphp5.so

and uncomment it (remove the # sign). When you’re done the file will look like the following:

Editing LoadModule line

Save it!

Now we need to restart our Apache HTTP web server. Easy enough, go back to “System Preferences” and then “Sharing”, from there uncheck the check box for “Web Sharing” and then check it again. This will stop and restart your server.

But how do we know PHP is running properly?

Go to your “Terminal” session and “cd ${HOME}/Sites”. This will be the “Sites” directory under your username on the system. In this directory create a file (using vi) called “phpinfo.php”. In this file put the following line

<?php phpinfo(); ?>

Your file will look like this:

phpinfo.php

Save it.

Now go to your browser at “http://localhost/~<username>/phpinfo.php” and you should see a screen that looks like the following:

http://localhost/~/phpinfo.php

The next thing we need to do is set up PHP so that we can debug our software easily. We do this by using Xdebug. Get the Xdebug source files from http://www.xdebug.org/download.php. You want to get the latest source and download it to your machine. After you’ve done that, go to a “Terminal” session and go to the directory where you downloaded the files. (More than likely ${HOME}/Downloads) Now run gunzip and tar on the file like so:

gunzip and tar xvf xdebug

After you’ve done that, you need to cd into the directory where the sources are kept. In the case of the file I downloaded they are in “xdebug-2.0.5″ and from here I’m going to run “sudo phpize” and “./configure –enable-Xdebug” like so:

phpize and configure of xdebug

and finally I’m going to run make:

make xdebug

Now we should have a file in the modules subdirectory called xdebug.so:

xdebug.so

We need to copy this file to our extensions directory. Where is that at? We go back to our phpinfo program that we ran in the browser at “http://localhost/~<username>/phpinfo.php”. The information displayed in the browser should have a section labeled Core which should have an entry for “extension_dir”.

Core and extension_dir in phpinfo.php

We want to put the “xdebug.so” file in this directory. We’ll do this using “sudo” like so:

Move xdebug.so into extension_dir

We now need to edit our “php.ini” file. But where is it? Well PHP doesn’t have to have a php.ini file to run and on our Apple Macintosh there’s not one. If you again, look at the phpinfo program that we ran in the browser at “http://localhost/~username/phpinfo.php” you’ll notice a line that says “Configuration File (php.ini) Path”. Mine says “/etc” and if you look in “/etc” for “php.ini” the file is not there. But there is a file called “php.ini.default”. Just copy it (using “sudo”) and then we’ll edit it (using “sudo vi”) like so:

cp php.ini.default to php.ini

At the bottom of this file we want to put the following lines:

; Xdebug config for Mac OS X and NetBeans IDE
zend_extension=/usr/lib/php/extensions/no-debug-non-zts-20090626/xdebug.so
xdebug.remote_enable=on
xdebug.remote_handler=dbgp
; xdebug.remote_mode=req
xdebug.remote_host=localhost
xdebug.remote_port=9000
; xdebug.idekey=

and our file will look like this (the lines we added are highlighted):

php.ini file edited with xdebug information

Now, we need to stop and restart our server again. Again, this is done by going to “System Preferences”, “Sharing” and unchecking and checking the box next to “Web Sharing”.

Now, how do we know if our debug mode is ready? Again, we go to “http://localhost/~<username>/phpinfo.php” and in this file there should be a section title “XDebug” like so:

XDebug in phpinfo.php

Ok, now we’ve got PHP running, in debug mode, but we want to be able to create and debug programs in NetBeans. This is pretty simple to do as well, let’s do a test.

Click on File and New Project and the following dialog box should come up

New PHP Project

Click Next and you may see the following dialog box as well:

Activating PHP

I had some problems with this on the Apple Macintosh (it just stayed on this screen). Give it a few minutes and then hit the “< Back” button. Everything seemed to be OK for me when I did this.

So, now (if we had to, we clicked on File and New Project again) we should see the following dialog box where we will enter “TestPHPProject” in as the “Project Name” and “/NetBeansProjects/TestPHPProject” as the “Sources Folder:”

TestPHPProject

Now, click “Next >” and you’ll see this dialog box:

PHP Project Configuration

Change the Project URL to be “http://localhost/~<username>/TestPHPProject”

Click on the “Copy files from Sources Folder to another location” button and then click the “Browse” button. You want to browse to “/Users/<username>/Sites”. The resulting dialog box will look like the following:

TestPHPProject Edited Configuration

After that’s done, NetBeans will open up the “index.php” file for your Project. Put the following line

phpinfo();

in this file so that it looks like this:

index.php in NetBeans with phpinfo();

Now, you’re ready to go. In NetBeans, click on “Debug” and then “Debug Project (TestPHPProject)” and the program should start and it will stop at the first line like so:

NetBeans index.php file being debugged

You can now step through this file or any other PHP file you create.
