Today I installed CNET’s TechTracker and while I do love the concept, it’s likely to get uninstalled. Primarily, it’s not actually tracking the bulk of the software I would like to track because it seems to only pay attention to /Applications. In the fine tradition of sysadmin file system organization (or simply my own personal mental organization) I try to keep most of the apps away from the system’s /Applications directory, so I have a /Local hierarchy where I keep, well, local stuff (so there is such a thing as /Local/Applications where most of the apps I use live; there are exceptions for those that insist on living in /Applications, such as CS4 or Fusion). Looking into the preferences pane, there doesn’t seem to be an option to add other locations.

I realize most people install applications in the system location, which is fine. It simply means TechTracker isn’t of much use to me at this point in time.

I had been wanting to take Snow Leopard for a spin for some time, but software availability at home

I had been wanting to take Snow Leopard for a spin for some time, but software availability at home and time constraints in general had prevented me from doing it. I picked up a copy during my last visit to California, so all that was left was finding some cycles to install it and get going with it. Friday just sort of came up from nowhere and enabled the forcing function: disk.dieByClickNoise(). New drive, some minor surgery, and voilá: ready for Snow Leopard.

It has been running pretty well minus a couple of annoyances: it doesn’t seem to get along with my wireless at home all time and iPulse now asks for an admin password upon login (which, admittedly, I don’t do all that often, so it’s not enough to be obnoxious). Everything else so far works rather well. Having been running on the same Leopard image for nearly two years, I felt it was time to start from scratch (i.e., discarding old apps I no longer use, rearranging some things in my home directory, fully switching to Xcode) and, along the way, verify that things work as expected. I’d say I’m about 80% done, but even at that level, I’m fully functional for work (and blogging, but of course).

Given the starting point, I did push MobileMe a bit by having it sync most of the items it supports (mail accounts and rules, the dock, etc). Everything worked as advertised, so a lot of that work was fairly effortless (and contributed to the cleanup). I also went ahead and updated most of the seed files I keep on the server at home (i.e., the bare baseline of apps, configuration and initialization files, and other data that I share across all the systems I use, which, at last count, was too many). Yes, I do eat my own dog food, and at some point I will polish what I have written about said dog food and publish it.

Once the laptop is 100% done and I’m satisfied with it (say, a couple of weeks of heavy use of most of the work/photo/video stuff), the desktop will follow, although I am thinking that the Mac Mini at home will probably happen soonish given its primary purpose in life is to deliver media into my living room. Alas, this is the end of the line for the trusty PowerBook G4, which turns four in a couple of months, although its current user will continue to enjoy everything Leopard has to offer for quite some time (until the system dies of Leopard is no longer updated or usable in it).

Does this look familiar? But, no, this is not Photoshop; it’s actually the interface of Pixel

Does this look familiar? But, no, this is not Photoshop; it’s actually the interface of Pixel Studio Pro, a comparably new bitmap editor, on Ubuntu Linux.

When I first learnt about Pixel Studio Pro (formerly just Pixel) via the CinePaint-user mailing list, I thought that there finally was an appropriate bitmap editor for Linux available. About two years later, I still do—sort of.

After downloading the demo version in late 2007, I decided to give Pixel a try. So I transferred the money, but, after receiving my registration code & installing Pixel successfully on Ubuntu, I had to realize that the Linux version was very buggy to the point where absolutely essential features such as masks didn’t work. Finally, I emailed a complaint to Pavel Kanzelsberger, the programmer, and demanded my money back. No response.

Now (the above happened in early 2008), almost two years later, I received an email notification saying that an improved version of Pixel was available. Having still no real alternative, I though, well, I can’t loose, so I requested a new registration code and downloaded the latest version.

At first glance, everything looked much better: all of the filters worked, importing JPEGs went flawlessly (albeit I was first notified that I attempted to open an animation). Finally, I wanted to try some mask operations, but had to realize that I still couldn’t access the alpha channel. When I emailed Pavel Kanzelsberger, I was flatly told that masks wouldn’t work and that I should use layer masks instead.

This was the point where I should have become suspicious. In my admitted naïvety, I gave layer masks a try, but this evidently couldn’t work, since layer masks are merely a means of making certain portions of a layer transparent, in order to achive blending effects, etc..

After all of this, I am asking myself: What’s the point to have a bitmap editor available where masks don’t work properly? I haven’t found an answer to this one, yet. Maybe with the Mac OS or Windows version this is not an issue, but this would be very hard for me to believe.

Now I realize how much I apprechiate the Gimp. Even if it still lacks features such as 16-bit/channel, HDR (32-bit), or good CMYK support, I can at least rely on the fact that the features that are implemented work properly.

PhotoShop

Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, Versione Retail

Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, Versione Retail

Info

Guida all’installazione:

- Spuntate “Inizializza destinazione”

Touchy subject, I know. I’ll go ahead and tackle some “classic” arguments thrown at PC users, as well as some aspects of the Mac vs PC discussion:

“Macs don’t get viruses”

It’s unacceptable to say that. It’s possible to say that it’s safer to use Mac OS X than it is to run Windows, for instance, but that’s because viruses, worms and the like are coded aiming for broader target ranges, and that comprehends PC-compatibility. So the fact that the most popular system out there is Windows makes PCs a far more valuable target for malware than Macs, and that’s why these bad boys are engineered to work on machines operating under Windows.

“In Macs, you don’t have stuff running in the background”

This contradicts the most fundamental theory behind the working of an operating system. An OS is designed to, amongst other things, coordinate the execution of a bunch of programs. Each program can be called while the execution of another process is still not finished. In fact, this is very natural and frequent, and is actually the motivation behind the construction of an OS. Such a system needs to have features, like say, a GUI, a file managing system, device drivers and other services, etc etc etc. All of that necessarily requires stuff to run in the background, so ANY operating system includes that. Period.

“Microsoft doesn’t innovate, only Apple does”

I can see where this comes from. Apple does have a very creative crew when it comes to looks and feel of their devices and systems. Also, Microsoft has implemented stuff that wasn’t their idea to begin with (i.e. tabbed browsing, if I’m not mistaken). However, this happens a lot in the industry, and if a functionality that enhaces usability can be added, I think it should be (so long as the ones who implement it later don’t pretend to be the creators of the idea). However, people tend to forget that Microsoft has brought perhaps the most significant innovation to computing ever seen: the GUI-based OS concept. Hell yeah.

Now, just as people say Microsoft copies stuff off other companies, people could say Apple copied Microsoft when they decided to make their system present itself through graphical windows other than just a terminal

“Apple software is less flawed”

Another misconception. Just because crackers don’t target Macs and other Apple products, it doesn’t mean they can’t get in if they try. Windows systems are actually a lot stronger in this aspect than MacOS versions, for example, but since there’s not nearly as many people interested in hacking Macs, most people just assume the system is “safer”. Don’t believe me? Here you go:
http://www.zdnet.com.au/news/security/soa/Mac-OS-X-hacked-under-30-minutes/0,130061744,139241748,00.htm
You might also wanna check this out: http://www.tomshardware.com/news/hack-windows-security-snow-leopard,8704.html
Oh, and why not look into this one? http://www.net-security.org/article.php?id=1322&p=1

Teh RehvolushonZ

Apple uses the term “revolutionize” a bit too often. One of their most recent products, the “Magic Mouse”, is supposed to “revolutionize” the concept of mice. Right. The thing is, the mouse not only has limited features (the two-finger swipe can’t be set to perform other actions than flicking through pages/pictures/whatever, while extra buttons can be set to do anything at all), it also lacks ergonometry. The iPod did give mp3 players a big twist though, so props to them. The iPhone? Arguable.

Stability

I don’t know much about this one, since I’ve never spent relevant time using a Mac, so I usually just believe it when they say Macs run “smoother” than Windows. That’s fine by me. If anyone has actual facts, they’re welcome to comment informing me.

Just to make it clear that I don’t have Gates’ picture tattooed across my chest, I’m gonna say “shame on MS for releasing Vista and Longhorn before they were completely done”.Then again, they might have had a good reason for that (XP had been around for a long time, and they might just have “had to do something”). Oh yeah, and I don’t use IE, I think it’s slow, too square-ish and the work-arounds aren’t very intuitive for me. Also, more flaws have been found for it, etc etc etc.

If you think about it though, there doesn’t seem to be a great number of PC diehard fans like the ones Apple has converted. PC users aren’t ashamed (that’s right, the word is “ashamed”) when someone says something bad about PCs. Try that out on an Apple fanboy. You’ll get the classic arguments (read above) thrown at you before you can blink twice.

But let’s forget about that. Everyone should use what they think works best for them, and you know, if prettier design along with stability are features you MUST have, and you’re willing to pay for, then by all means go with that. If you choose to go with compatibility and are ok with dealing with crashes more oftenly, then that’s ok too. Just don’t come up to me or anyone else with lines from the company’s advertisement campaign and an arrogant look, because just eventually you might get a lecture and end up with a dumb look on your face.

Anyways, if you guys have any relevant comments and/or views on this, please speak up. If you’re a Mac user who’s up to pointing out a few relistic and measurable advantages you think are important or if you noticed I said something that’s untrue about your system, do say so.

http://webcam-osx.sourceforge.net/

E, claro, a principal vantagem.

O Ultimate do Windows 7 – R$700,00).

Ah, como não poderia deixar de ter…
