I hadn’t done a full OS reinstall on my MacBook since I originally got it, so I decided last night to remedy the situation with a clean nuke-and-pave of MacOS X 10.6.2 Snow Leopard. As you can see from the screenshot above, I am back up and running with 10.6.2. NeoOffice and CS4 along with a handful of other software goodies are reinstalled, and my files are restored to their rightful places on my hard drive. One thing that I decided to do differently, that I had never tried before, was to encrypt my home folder with FileFault. I know that this can cause a real problem when something goes wrong, but I backup my files often enough that I hope it won’t turn into a nightmare if the FileFault system develops a problem. So far, I haven’t noticed any performance hit or problem by using FileFault, despite copying back many files to my internal SSD.

While everything was being done, I finished Philip K. Dick’s Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said. I will read A Scanner Darkly next and then switch back to some postmodern theory.

I’m a self-professed, fanatical user of the pedia apps available from Bruji. They’re the only thing that keep me sane while trying to organize my ever growing collection of media.

A while back they released an absolutely perfect (and free) iPhone app called Pocketpedia. It simply synced your collections from the desktop applications so you could always keep them with you on the go.

Amazon, being amazon, decided that was too much goodness for us mere mortals and sent a removal letter to Apple. Pocketpedia wasn’t the sole target but it was the only one that mattered to me.

Bruji, being Bruji, decided their customers were certainly entitled to that goodness and took it upon themselves to rewrite the application in a way amazon couldn’t complain about. It recently hit the app store, and the joy is immense!

Not only is the application even snappier than the old one but it also supports two-way syncing this time, so you’re no longer forced to do all organization the desktop.

If you haven’t got a set of database applications then you owe it to yourself to check out Bruji and their offering. Pocketpedia2 for president?

ps3mediaserver – Project Hosting on Google Code If you’re like me who doesn’t own

ps3mediaserver – Project Hosting on Google Code

If you’re like me who doesn’t own a PC to stream media to the PS3 then this free alternative is a good idea. It runs on macs, PCs and Linux and developed on the Java platform.

It’s fairly simple to use if you know your way around media servers but to put it simply, it gets the job done. I’m using my mac mini ( not the latest but the first generation intel Mac mini with 2 GB of RAM to do this. It automatically sets up the DNLA protocols necessary to communicate with the PS3 and automatically sets the movie folder in your home folder as the default source for the media. You can add additional folders as well.

But what makes this piece of software great is the transcoding. Up until now, we’ve always been dependent on the formats that the consoles supported and it hasn’t been easy. Not all avi files would play, incompatible condec and so on that it’s been quite a challenge to play anything off a home media server to the PS3 but it all changes with this software and it’s built in transcoder.

Yes folks it has a built in transcoder which will allow you to transcode in almost faster than real time any format to make it PS3 friendly. That means all your mkv, avi, ogg, and so on will be transcoded in almost real time. Note that I stress almost real time. This is because results may vary on the processor, RAM and so on of your computer and may either be faster or slower.

Sound transmitted supports dolby digital or whatever audio encoding is in your files. Scrubbing through the movie may prove to be difficult for some formats since I’ve stated above that it may or may not be transcoding. This means that if the file is being transcoded, chances are you can’t skip any further than what has already been transcoded. So be warned. A mild inconvenience but nothing that should seriously affect the overall experience.

The PS3 automatically detects the presence of the media server and everything can be accessed from there. The one amazing thing I’m very very much impressed here is tha ability to select language. Yes I do mean the audio language of the file. The file format mkv is used mostly if there are multiple languages in the file. It’s like the DVD language menu option but can usually only be controlled or watched on a PC. PS3 Media Server ia able to dissect through the language options and send that information to the PS3 which will allow you to select your desired language.

The best part of this, it’s free. Yes, click on the link above to bring you to the developer’s page and download away. I do hope that they continue to develop and support this important piece of software and keep it free.

I installed Apple’s latest update for Snow Leopard, 10.6.2, with their 476MB Combo Updater available here. The upgrade successfully installed, and I have not had any problems with my usual apps: CS4 and NeoOffice. Luckily, I haven’t experienced the invisible menu bar status icons issue reported by some folks. I do, however, need to run PhotoBooth and find out if the update addresses the MacBook fan revving issue while video chatting that began with MacOS X 10.6.

Above is a screen shot of my desktop, and the desktop picture was one that I recently made when I was walking around downtown Atlanta on Peachtree Street.

4. Times (30$) Wer es den “Mac way” haben will, allerdings mit 30$ auch der teuerste.

Hello,

Because I met people asking about how to access 1Password database from a PC or Linux or even mobile phone, I have decided to post a link to this video. It’s a 1Password 3 feature. Here you go:

Here is also a blog post from the 1Password developers, how to set things up: http://tinyurl.com/qgea2b Enjoy!

I am having some problem with the X11 lately on my Mac OSX (Leopard). I have not found a solution yet — when I do I’ll sure put it up here. But a stuck X11 window in the dock caused it to freeze up. Along with that all the fancy cover switch and other related stuff are also gone! Luckily the spotlight accepted the Command+spacebar combination and let me find terminal.app from there.

However, although I knew who the culprit was (using htop) but I cannot kill it (kill -9 kills it, but it revives!). But the following command did the trick:

$ killalll Dock

It’ll kill the Dock application and then restart it instantly. (Although it did not kill the culprit, x11).

I’m yet to find a solution for the x11 problem!

After a couple of months using hackintosh at home, I need to use the similar environment at the office .. as I want to use a better environment

I went with this list:

Gigabyte GA-EP41-UD3L
Zotac 9600GT
Intel Core2Duo E7500 2.93 GHz
Casing with 400 Watt Power Supply Unit
RAM Kingston DDR2/800 2GB
Harddisk SATA 160GB

With the limitation I had [no 8GB or more FlashDisk], I modify some guidance on the hackintosh forum like this.

Pre-requisite:

Retail DVD of Snow Leopard 10.6.0

USB Flash Disk [64MB is enough]

Get ES2L kit from sk1nhd33t posting

Get DSDT.aml and Sets of LegacyHDA by theBrave here or here

A working hackintosh or real Mac

Preparation:
Create USB Boot

Create USB Boot as sk1nhd33t create Boot Installer guide, I ticked: com.apple.Boot.plist; LegacyAppleRTC.kext; NullPowerManagement.kext; OpenHaltRestart.kext; PlatformUUID.kext; SleepEnabler.kext

Do not copy Bootcamp themes

Leave /Volumes/[USBFlash]/com.apple.Boot.plist as it is

Rename /Volumes/[USBFlash]/Extra/CustomExtentions to /Volumes/[USBFlash]/Extra/Extentions

Copy DSDT.aml from theBrave to /Volumes/[USBFlash]/Extra

Copy ./series of LegacyHDA 888 (ALC888)/4outs2ins HDA headphone/LegacyHDA.kext to /Volumes/[USBFlash]/Extra/Extentions

Copy ES2L Kit to the USBFlash

Create installer partition on harddisk

Plug your new harddisk to a working hackintosh and use Disk Utility to partition it into 2 partitions, with the second partition on the end of the disk around 10GB [give it SnowLeopard and SLinstaller name respectively]

Use process above to make SLinstaller partition bootable

Plug the harddisk to the new rig

Installation:

Plug your USBFlash to the PC, and fire up the rig .. hit Delete on keyboard and choose this USB as the first bootable media, hit F10 and Y

When screen of bootable Snow appear, hit arrow then choose SLinstaller as the boot media

Follow the screen of MacOSX installation, choose your harddisk partition as target [I selected all the options in customized with no error at all]

After it finished [around 30 minutes], it need restart

Plug your speaker to the green port behind the rig

On the screen of bootable Snow, hit arrow again and choose SnowLeopard partition

[sound should be ok] Follow all the remaining installation process

After it finished, once again do step creation USB Boot above to make SnowLeopard partition bootable.

Restart the system [don't forget to plug out your USBFlash]

System should be booted from SnowLeopard partition, and your system should be OK now.

Connect to internet and update to 10.6.1 and iTunes 9.0.2 [this is what my fresh installation of SL need]

Refinement:
Check TimeMachine can work or not.
Check Dashboard widget addition [a proof of QE/CI functioning well]

OK, I’m a happy hackintosh user …

I sometime have problem finding which persistent process is not letting me eject a volume (CD/DVD/USB drive). The error message is not very helpful at all:

Try quitting applications

OK, but which one(s)? I often have hard time figuring that out using htop/ top or a combination of ps and grep.

But actually this is what I want:

$ lsof | grep -i Volume_Name

where Volume_Name is the name of the volume (or an ‘identifying’ part of the name) I want to eject. This gives me the name(s) and process ID(s) of the run-away process(es) as well as the path to the file(s) in use on the volume, Volume_Name.

Now that I know the names I should first try to save the documents and quit the applications involved in the normal way. However, if a particular application does not oblige, I can always kill it (with the risk of potential data loss!) using its process ID (say, 123):

$ kill -9 123

After that, the ejection of the volume should not be difficult at all.

Needless to say, being a Unix utility,
lsof
(=“list open files”) may be used on other *nix-based systems as well.

I just stumbled upon a few ways to change the default login shell to bash:

The easiest one is

$ chsh -s /bin/bash username

On some machines you may have to use
ypcsh
instead of
chsh
. The full path of the shell executable must be specified.

But if you have root access you may have the option to use either of the following two as well:

$ usermod -s bash username

Change it by editing the entry for the user in
/etc/passwd
file, manually.

If none of the above works, here’s a workaround!

N.B. Make sure that the desired shell is listed in
/etc/shells
file.

Last year on the PHP Conference in Mainz it was the first time i heard about couchdb. I was quite impressed, but had no use case for this database. In the near future i will need to improve our document handling in the applications. So i want to work with couchdb to improve versioning and searching.

You can find more information about couchdb on http://couchdb.apache.org.

As anybody know, the first step is to install the couchdb on the local system. As i am a apple follower . I looked for a guide to install it on snow leopard.

Original information from http://blog.deadinkvinyl.com/2008/07/12/couchdb-on-macosx-leopard/

I did some corrections for the copy and paste guys like me . But the original post has much more information about the single steps.

# Install needed packages via macports
sudo port install icu erlang spidermonkey

# Download the latest couchdb file
tar xvzf apache-couchdb-0.10.0.tar.gz
./configure
make

sudo make install

# Show all used userId’s

# Show all used groupId’s
dscl . -list /Groups PrimaryGroupID | awk ‘{print $2}’ | sort -n

# We use groupid and userid 103 for the couchdbuser
sudo dseditgroup -o create -i 103 -r “CouchDB Users” couchdb
sudo dscl . -create /Users/couchdb
sudo dscl . -create /Users/couchdb UniqueID 103
sudo dscl . -create /Users/couchdb UserShell /bin/bash
sudo dscl . -create /Users/couchdb RealName “CouchDB Administrator”
sudo dscl . -create /Users/couchdb NFSHomeDirectory \
/usr/local/var/lib/couchdb
sudo dscl . -create /Users/couchdb PrimaryGroupID 103
sudo dscl . -create /Users/couchdb Password *

sudo chown -R couchdb:couchdb /usr/local/var/lib/couchdb
sudo chown -R couchdb:couchdb /usr/local/var/log/couchdb

# Startup couchdb

sudo -u couchdb couchdb
