Mind you, these are not my own words, so dont go ranting off to me!

——

Microsoft gave computer makers a six-month extension for offering Windows XP on newly-shipped PCs. While this doesn’t impact enterprise IT — because volume licensing agreements will allow IT to keep installing Windows XP for many years to come — the move is another symbolic nail in Vista’s coffin.

The public reputation of Windows Vista is in shambles, as Microsoft itself tacitly acknowledged in its Mojave ad campaign.

IT departments are largely ignoring Vista. In June (18 months after Vista’s launch), Forrester Research reported that just 8.8% of enterprise PCs worldwide were running Vista. Meanwhile, Microsoft appears to have put Windows 7 on an accelerated schedule that could see it released in 2010. That will provide IT departments with all the justification they need to simply skip Vista and wait to eventually standardize on Windows 7 as the next OS for business.

So how did Vista get left holding the bag? Let’s look at the five most important reasons why Vista failed.

5. Apple successfully demonized Vista

Apple’s clever I’m a Mac ads have successfully driven home the perception that Windows Vista is buggy, boring, and difficult to use. After taking two years of merciless pummeling from Apple, Microsoft recently responded with it’s I’m a PC campaign in order to defend the honor of Windows. This will likely restore some mojo to the PC and Windows brands overall, but it’s too late to save Vista’s perception as a dud.

4. Windows XP is too entrenched

In 2001, when Windows XP was released, there were about 600 million computers in use worldwide. Over 80% of them were running Windows but it was split between two code bases: Windows 95/98 (65%) and Windows NT/2000 (26%), according to IDC. One of the big goals of Windows XP was to unite the Windows 9x and Windows NT code bases, and it eventually accomplished that.

In 2008, there are now over 1.1 billion PCs in use worldwide and over 70% of them are running Windows XP. That means almost 800 million computers are running XP, which makes it the most widely installed operating system of all time. That’s a lot of inertia to overcome, especially for IT departments that have consolidated their deployments and applications around Windows XP.

And, believe it or not, Windows XP could actually increase its market share over the next couple years. How? Low-cost netbooks and nettops are going to be flooding the market. While these inexpensive machines are powerful enough to provide a solid Internet experience for most users, they don’t have enough resources to run Windows Vista, so they all run either Windows XP or Linux. Intel expects this market to explode in the years ahead. (For more on netbooks and nettops, see this fact sheet and this presentation — both are PDFs from Intel.)

3. Vista is too slow

For years Microsoft has been criticized by developers and IT professionals for “software bloat” — adding so many changes and features to its programs that the code gets huge and unwieldy. However, this never seemed to have enough of an effect to impact software sales. With Windows Vista, software bloat appears to have finally caught up with Microsoft.

Vista has over 50 million lines of code. XP had 35 million when it was released, and since then it has grown to about 40 million. This software bloat has had the effect of slowing down Windows Vista, especially when it’s running on anything but the latest and fastest hardware. Even then, the latest version of Windows XP soundly outperforms the latest version of Microsoft Vista. No one wants to use a new computer that is slower than their old one.

2. There wasn’t supposed to be a Vista

It’s easy to forget that when Microsoft launched Windows XP it was actually trying to change its OS business model to move away from shrink-wrapped software and convert customers to software subscribers. That’s why it abandoned the naming convention of Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows 2000, and instead chose Windows XP.

The XP stood for “experience” and was part of Microsoft’s .NET Web services strategy at the time. The master plan was to get users and businesses to pay a yearly subscription fee for the Windows experience — XP would essentially be the on-going product name but would include all software upgrades and updates, as long as you paid for your subscription. Of course, it would disable Windows on your PC if you didn’t pay. That’s why product activation was coupled with Windows XP.

Microsoft released Windows XP and Office XP simultaneously in 2001 and both included product activation and the plan to eventually migrate to subscription products. However, by the end of 2001 Microsoft had already abandoned the subscription concept with Office, and quickly returned to the shrink-wrapped business model and the old product development model with both products.

The idea of doing incremental releases and upgrades of its software — rather than a major shrink-wrapped release every 3-5 years — was a good concept. Microsoft just couldn’t figure out how to make the business model work, but instead of figuring out how to get it right, it took the easy route and went back to an old model that was simply not very well suited to the economic and technical realities of today’s IT world.

1. It broke too much stuff

One of the big reasons that Windows XP caught on was because it had the hardware, software, and driver compatibility of the Windows 9x line plus the stability and industrial strength of the Windows NT line. The compatibility issue was huge. Having a single, highly-compatible Windows platform simplified the computing experience for users, IT departments, and software and hardware vendors.

Microsoft either forgot or disregarded that fact when it released Windows Vista, because, despite a long beta period, a lot of existing software and hardware were not compatible with Vista when it was released in January 2007. Since many important programs and peripherals were unusable in Vista, that made it impossible for a lot of IT departments to adopt it. Many of the incompatibilities were the result of tighter security.

After Windows was targeted by a nasty string of viruses, worms, and malware in the early 2000s, Microsoft embarked on the Trustworthy Computing initiative to make its products more secure. One of the results was Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), which won over IT and paved the way for XP to become the world’s mostly widely deployed OS.

The other big piece of Trustworthy Computing was the even-further-locked-down version of Windows that Microsoft released in Vista. This was definitely the most secure OS that Microsoft had ever released but the price was user-hostile features such as UAC, a far more complicated set of security prompts that accompanied many basic tasks, and a host of software incompatibility issues. In order words, Vista broke a lot of the things that users were used to doing in XP.

Bottom line

There are some who argue that Vista is actually more widely adopted than XP was at this stage after its release, and that it’s highly likely that Vista will eventually replace XP in the enterprise. I don’t agree. With XP, there were clear motivations to migrate: bring Windows 9x machines to a more stable and secure OS and bring Windows NT/2000 machines to an OS with much better hardware and software compatibility. And, you also had the advantage of consolidating all of those machines on a single OS in order to simplify support.

With Vista, there are simply no major incentives for IT to use it over XP. Security isn’t even that big of an issue because XP SP2 (and above) are solid and most IT departments have it locked down quite well. As I wrote in the article Prediction: Microsoft will leapfrog Vista, release Windows 7 early, and change its OS business, Microsoft needs to abandon the strategy of releasing a new OS every 3-5 years and simply stick with a single version of Windows and release updates, patches, and new features on a regular basis. Most IT departments are essentially already on a subscription model with Microsoft so the business strategy is already in place there.

As far as the subscription model goes for small businesses and consumers, instead of disabling Windows on a user’s PC if they don’t renew their subscription, just don’t allow that machine to get any more updates until they renew. Microsoft could also work with OEMs to sell something like a three-year subscription to Windows with every a new PC. Then users would have the choice of renewing on their own after that.

command: t

enter

partition number: 3

enter

Hex code: 83

enter

command: w

enter

unmount /dev/hda3

enter

mkfs.ext3 /dev/hda3

enter (jetzt ist ein bisschen warten angesagt)

mkdir /mnt/bt3 && mount /dev/hda3 /mnt/bt3

Install Backtrack to: /mnt/bt3

write new mbr to: /dev/hda3

restore original MBR after lilo–> deaktiviere diese option!!!

As i’ve read recently on the Apple.com website the new Mac Pro is more energy efficiant, Becau

As i’ve read recently on the Apple.com website the new Mac Pro is more energy efficiant, Because Apple makes both the hardware and the software for MacBook Pro, we are able to design them to work together. This allows us to make a smarter product that uses less electricity. For instance, to reduce energy consumption, the MacBook Pro hard drive spins down automatically when inactive. MacBook Pro also decides which processor — CPU or GPU — is best suited to efficiently perform a task. The processor even throttles down to save power between keystrokes as you type. The LED-backlit display in the MacBook Pro is another feature that plays an important part in conserving energy, consuming 30 percent less power than conventional LCD displays. And the display is designed to dim when you enter a darkened room. Together, these adjustments make all three MacBook Pro notebooks much more energy efficient. In fact, they can run on about one-third the power of a single lightbulb.

MacBook Pro meets the stringent low power requirements set by the EPA, giving it ENERGY STAR certification. MacBook Pro also meets the latest efficiency requirements of ENERGY STAR Version 5.0 Specification for Computers before its July 2009 effective date. ENERGY STAR 5.0 sets significantly higher efficiency limits for power supplies and aggressive limits for the computer’s typical annual power consumption.

but with everything as sleek and stylish, as the mac pro, you need a radley laptop bag to carry it in.

hen it comes to being environmentally friendly, Apple approaches the challenge differently — through products like the new MacBook Pro. Unlike other companies, Apple controls every aspect of the production of its computers. So Apple designers and engineers can minimize their carbon footprint in ways others can’t. They design them with fewer parts. They build them using recyclable materials. They even create software that makes them more energy efficient. The result is a new standard for green design.

So my new Mac Pro has arrived…

Last month I wrote about the reasons for going with the Mac Pro over the new iMac.

The best way to describe my new Quad-core Mac Pro is that it thinks as fast as I can. Okay, maybe not as fast as a human brain, but it’s still very speedy. I like working with lots of programs open at once. I’ll be uploading photos to Flickr, while downloading video from iTunes, writing an email and re-encoding a video file. Doing all this at once will bog many machines down, but not the new Mac Pro. I have yet to see it slow down. The only limiting factor is the speed of the internet (which has nothing to do with my computer). Otherwise it handles everything I can throw at it. Thanks to multi-threading my 4 processors appear as 8 to the software and I have yet to max out more than one or two at a time. Often tasks are spread out over the 8 cores evenly, with 10 to 20% usage.

I went with 8 GB of RAM and that certainly helps with my problem of having a lot of programs open at once. But the funny thing is, I feel less of a need to have many programs open at once because they don’t take very long to open. One icon bounce in the dock and BAM, it’s ready to go. I hated how long it took programs to load on the old iMac, which led me to leave stuff open all the time and consequently slow the machine down even more by having a lot of programs open.

The other thing that really helps with overall speed is to have a lot of empty space on your hard drive. If you’re down to 10-15% free space, you’re going to start running into big problems with slowdown. I have all four hard drive bays filled with two 1 TB and two 500 GB drives.

I reformatted my old iMac with a new install of Leopard and don’t have nearly the number of programs running on it, because it’s going to be my dad’s computer and he doesn’t need all those apps. Since doing that, the iMac now boots up super fast and is very snappy. Interesting that Macs, just like Windows, do seem to slow down as you install more apps and have more stuff running in the background. Not really a surprise, but something to think about if you’re noticing your machine slowing down. Might want to consider a fresh install, after backing up your data of course.

Back in December 2007 I had upgraded to Leopard on the iMac and had problems with GarageBand crashing on initializing. I never did solve the problem and even the new GarageBand does not load on my new Mac Pro. Just hangs during the load and crashes. The Apple forums are filled with posts about GarageBand crashing on startup. I suspect it has to do with my Pro Tools install. If I have a clean install of Leopard and iLife 09, GarageBand loads no problem, but as soon as I import my user data and settings it crashes. I would much rather have all my preferences and data from my old Mac, than have GarageBand work. I could start from scratch, but that would take a whole weekend to sort out. As someone pointed out, you can try going through all your Application Support files and MIDI files, but I’ve already wasted enough time with that. It’s not worth it. So I won’t be using GarageBand.

Aside from GarageBand not working, I am very happy with the Mac Pro and am glad I decided to spend the extra money and get something with some more horsepower than the iMac. I would recommend the Quad-Core to anyone like me who does more with their computer than the average soccer mom or student. The 8-Core is really only for people who are using high-end 3D software or if you need to render HD video, or if you have money burning a hole in your pocket.

One 2.93GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon

6GB (3×2GB)

640GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s

NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512MB

One 18x SuperDrive

———————–

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3P με:

Case: Cooler Master Cosmos 1010 ESA

Ψήκτρα CPU: Cooler Master Gemini S

First tests of new Nehalem MacPro through Geekbench are very encouraging : the 8 cores/2,92 Ghz (high end model) is globally 23 times faster than a single 1,25 Ghz G4 (18 times faster on integers, 32 times faster on floating point calculations, 10 times faster for memory access, and offers a 14 times larger bandwidth).

However, there has been globally few progress since G5s (were unveiled close to 6 years ago).

Based on 2008 Mac Pro, this applies for the most part to the 2009 models as well. Say what you will

Based on 2008 Mac Pro, this applies for the most part to the 2009 models as well.

Say what you will of the holy war of Mac vs. PC. When it comes down to the system enclosure the Mac Pro stands in a league of it’s own.

Aesthetic:
The MacPro case is elegant and pleasing to look at, brushed aluminum, a mix of soft curves a rigid edges. It’s looks will fit right in a designer furniture showroom. While there is other nice aluminum cases on the market, many don’t get all the details right (like plain metal back plates) or ruin the whole look with huge glass panels with fans sticking out and neon lights struggling to imitate a rave scene inside the case.

Design:
Over the years little has changed in the outward design of this case, as the form factor has not changed since the G5 days. The conection ports have been adjusted to keep up with technology and and an additional optical drive bay was added to the front. The carrying handles are the only weak spot. It’s very uncomfortable to carry this case with one hand, it’s a little bit better with two hands, but the edges still dig into my hands. The older G4 machines were a breeze to pick up with theirr softer angled handles, and were easily carried with one hand. Not a big deal if your machine is mostly stationary. Since I work at a studio with 12 of these and it ads up to moving the machines quite a bit, I do notice this.

The interior of the machine is great, due to the fact that Apple does not have to accommodate various motherboards and power supplies. All the ports and conectors in the case are pre wired and covered with the case, you will never see any cables except for the optical drive. Working inside the case is a breeze. It’s quick to access memory and drives which snap into the system connectors with the help of drive caddy.
I have been unable to find a PC case that will match this due to the neccessary cabling of the current motherboard standards.

Additional Observations:
The MacPro towers are generally pretty quiet, (they were quite loud during the G5 days), although I find this varies from machine to machine. The fans will definitely spin up when the machine is being stressed by applications consistently.

Overall, it’s the best heavy duty case on the market. Some of it is due to the closed Apple platform that gives the engineers creative freedom to build what they want. Most of it is just good design and quality materials. There is many cases that try to imitate this, some of them get some of the elements right, but never all of them. This is definitely a benchmark product, that has existed for much longer than most tech products have, the design has stood the test of time and is still the best in it’s league. It’s easy to consider this Legendary (on our strange scale) 5/5.

The debate has raged for years. Does Apple need a mid-range tower for those power users who want more than just an iMac (which is built with the same mobile chips used in the MacBook Pros) but don’t quite need the more expensive Mac Pro?

This was my dilemma as my current computer, the first Intel iMac (2.0 GHz Intel Core Duo) was starting to show it’s three year age. (for example, rapidly clicking through my RAW photos in iPhoto would immediately hail the spinning beach ball and a several second delay)

With the latest Apple re-fresh of it’s iMac, Mini and Pro line I was hoping for a quad-core iMac based on Intel’s Nehalem processors with LED screen and the ability to add more than 4GB of RAM. This didn’t quite happen. I assume Intel’s mobile Nehalem won’t be out until summer so look for a fall re-fresh of the iMac line. Apple does now let you upgrade to 8GB of RAM in the new iMac’s, however because of space limitations, there are only two slots for RAM so you have to use pricey 4GB sticks to get up to 8GB. This will add $1000 to the price ($1200 here in Canada) bringing the price of the top-of-the-line iMac to a whopping $3799 (CAD)! That’s more than the new 2.66GHz Quad-Core Mac Pros! Because the Mac Pro has more slots for RAM you can use 2GB sticks and get yourself up to 8GB of RAM for $250 US ($300 CAD). Of course, you have to keep in mind, the Mac Pro doesn’t come with a monitor or iSight camera so you have to price those into the equation, so the Pro’s are more expensive (about $1000 more depending on the monitor you buy and other options), but I calculated that if I keep the Mac Pro for an extra year (based on keeping iMac for 3 years and Mac Pro for 4 years) the cost per year is exactly the same.

There’s no question that the Mac Pro is a little more than I need. I’m not a pro photographer or video editor, but I am a pro-sumer or power user as they say, so I find the iMac a bit limiting.

So I took the plunge and ordered my first Mac Pro…

2.66GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
8GB DDR3 RAM
ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB

I also picked up a Samsung SyncMaster 24″ LCD Monitor. I would have gone with the beautiful Apple 24 inch LED Cinema Display, but it’s $1000 CAD price tag is a bit much. Apple seriously needs to lower it’s monitor prices. You can get a 42 inch HD TV for that price. For $600 or $700, I’d consider an Apple monitor, but not $1000.

I will review the new Mac Pro when it arrives. I ordered on Friday so it should arrive at the end of March.

The new Macs are out, and yet, they cost more and are slower. The new Mac Pros start at 2.26 GHz and go up if you pay $2600 to go up 2.93 GHz. Apple claims there’s a Gighertz myth. But how can the software take advantage of the new Intel 7 processors? Leo doesn’t get this at all. How can slower be faster? $6,000 for a machine that’s below 3 Ghz?! Yeah, that’s certainly thinking differently! Leo also says there’s a rumor going that Apple is working on a 28″ iMac.
