In disappointing news this week, Lion have announced that they will be closing the Mac’s Shed

In disappointing news this week, Lion have announced that they will be closing the Mac’s Shed 22 brewery on the Wellington waterfront (Press releases here and here). The brewery has apparently served its purpose in allowing Mac’s to still be marketed as craft beer and is now costing too much – I guess it’s what you expect when an iconic craft brand is purchased by one of the big breweries. Anyway, can you please stop all the ‘crafty’ marketing and definitely stop calling Mac’s Gold ‘all malt’ when it now appears to be watered down with sugar – that’s false advertising! The Mac’s brand and beers have done a lot for beer culture in NZ and in many way it’s great that they have taken things to the masses but for me it’s probably now moved too far away from what I found appealing in the first place.

In far more positive news – The McCashin’s who started Mac’s but sold the brand to Lion in 1999 are back up and running in the original Stoke brewery which they maintained ownership of (see this Nelson Mail article for more info). The brewery was originally the Rochdale cider plant and this is now back in production and one of several beverages being produced. The brewery shop is now open and I popped in today to check it out – while no beer is yet being produced (beer is listed on their website so watch this space), you can fill your own riggers of locally brewed Founder’s or Golden Bear selections, as well as Rochdale Cider. I picked up Golden Bear’s Best Bitter which was rather tasty.

I was also given a sample of a new beverage called Fruté, which is cider mixed with real fruit. This isn’t something I’d usually be into but it’s very nice and possibly way too easy to drink on a hot day (though the tartness from the cider kicks in at the end). I not very good with obligation-free samples so I had to purchase some. Other products include the recently purchased 26000 Vodka (flashy website but bloody frustrating and not particularly useful) and Palaeo water. It’s really good to see the brewery up and running again and I wish them all the best.

If you’re in Nelson don’t forget next weeks Beer Fête – Saturday 5th Dec, 5 – 10.30pm. The list of participating breweries is here and the Dead Good Beer Events website is here.

Today’s clip is nearly 7 minutes long and isn’t even a proper video but it’s too bad because this is one of the best songs ever:

day after Thanksgiving, which this year falls on November 27th, is also known as Black Friday, and it marks the beginning of the Christmas shopping craze. Capitalizing on one of the busiest shopping days of the year, Apple has announced a “special Apple one-day shopping event” on November 27.

The company posted a teaser saying the following: “Come back to the Apple Online Store this Friday for a special one-day-only shopping event. You’ll find lots of great iPod, iPhone and Mac gift ideas — all with free shipping.”

So there you have it; if you don’t know what to do with your extra cash, here’s a chance to blow it all on Apple’s gadgetry (hopefully at a good discount).

Being an extremely hot afternoon, i had wanted to run into Macs, the one at my neighborhood area, to

Being an extremely hot afternoon, i had wanted to run into Macs, the one at my neighborhood area, to cool off and have lunch. After all, it would have been a long while since i ate at that sinful place…

I was wondering if they still had that grilled chicken foldover (is it how that flat bread thing was called?). It was one of my favorites and made me feel less guilty when i attack those golden fries… Hee.

Standing around the order counter, i can’t help but feel overwhelmed by the lunch crowd of school-kids, mothers with children. I never knew that spending an average of SGD7 per person for lunch was within budget for 1, the secondary school kids’ allowance, 2, the household allowance of the mother with her children.

I remember eating Macs during my school days was such a treat that it never happened more than once a month (Sun breakfast with discounted coupons) or once every 2-3 months (when the richer friends urged you to go along, to hang out). Back then it was about SGD5 and i remembered feeling the pinch.

But now i see sooo many of the school children around and it makes me wonder whether Macs has become part of their lifestyle instead of what i used to know as an occasional treat, a luxury…

Or maybe in this recession, everyone’s hoping for a chance to win that SGD50, 000 with every purchase of an extra-value meal..

Anyways, i was a little disappointed to learn that the foldover was no longer available and had a hard time deciding what to have.

Now i didn’t have the option of dining-in, ‘cuz of the crowd, so i had to order something that either could withstand the sweltering heat, the journey home of about 10mins Or just grab something to munch along the way.

That’s when the Mc Spicy Snack caught my eye. It was definitely made for munching on the go, it was spicy (yes i love spicy food, and i always opt for the spicy dish, if it works of course), it was also wrapped in tortilla.

What a discovery! This is something that’ll make me feel less guilty of the amount of calorie in-take.

So yup i ordered that and got it to go. I declined having it put in the plastic bag, doing my bit to help save the earth (whenever i can), however i noticed that the bag was crushed by the counter staff as i made my exit.

Does that mean that she’ll throw the carrier and not use it for the next customer?

Well there goes my “green” plan…

Anyways, as i walked out, i tore at the paper wrapper and sank my teeth into that little snack..

First thought, “that’s a lot of BBQ sauce splashed over the meat.” I could feel my guilt creeping all over me… Not a good sign. I could only taste the fried chicken strip, the BBQ sauce and the tortilla, nothing else.

Didn’t make me feel any good especially when i was reminded of that healthier, yummy-tasting avocado shrimp w cayenne pepper mayo wrap that i experimented making the last time…

No more Macs in a while Again i suppose… Unless the occasional overwhelming craving for unsalted fries kick in…

Since around 2002, I don’t think that the computer a writer uses has mattered much for writers

Since around 2002, I don’t think that the computer a writer uses has mattered much for writers, chiefly because virtually all computers on the market since that time will do everything you need: conjure up a window and allow you to type as long as you humanly can. The same applies to most word processors: I can’t remember the last time I got a word processor to crash except for Microsoft Word, and even that’s a very rare event. Around the time Windows XP and Mac OS X 10.2 came out, operating system stability problems receded—in Linux, they often weren’t present in the first place—and by now both Windows XP and the more recent versions of OS X are so stable that writers barely have to think about their computers if those machines are used primarily for writing.

This post comes in response to Betsy Lerner, who recently observed that she doesn’t work for Best Buy and therefore doesn’t know if an aspiring writer should buy a netbook (as a professional writer and wannabe novelist, I have some opinions on this stuff). For those of you too lazy to click the netbook link, netbooks are small laptops that usually range from 7 to 11 inches in screen size. I’d argue against netbooks: they tend to have lousy screens, and I wouldn’t want to look at one for an extended period of time. A desktop sounds more reasonable.

I prefer desktops because they tend to be more reliable and cost less, as described at the link. The new 27″ iMacs are particularly nice, and the screen attached is as good on the eyes as one can get among consumer machines. But your computer doesn’t matter much: get a $400 Dell with a 20″ monitor and you’ll still have a very nice set up. What actually matters is the time you spend with your ass in the seat, not what you’re facing while you write.

I like Macs, as demonstrated by this shot of my desk. But Windows, Linux, or OS X are all decent; all have fine, stable word processors. For documents you don’t have to share regularly, Mellel is a sweet word processor, and it has the full screen mode some writers really like. By “full screen,” I mean that you can hit command-shift-f and bring up a screen that looks like this, except much bigger:

That’s a real screenshot: you don’t have any menus or distractions on your screen, just text and a scroll bar. I added the black border in WordPress. Some people also like Mac Freedom, a program that “disables networking on an Apple computer for up to eight hours at a time” and sounds like a useful way of Disconnecting Distraction. Spotlight is very cool, as is DevonThink Pro. Both are especially useful for nonfiction.

Nonetheless, that’s the .1% of writing that doesn’t really matter much; the 99.9% that does is sitting at your computer and writing. And you can’t buy that for any amount of money.

EDIT: See also Harold Bloom on word processors (and, for good measure, editing), which contains an appropriate passage I came across on this subject.

Hi Folks:

Welcome to my official blog. I may have a few others scattered around the net but they are most likely part of a registered group or organization and are rather dull. This is my public, free to anyone blog. Until my website is up and running, and God only knows when that will be. I’m planning on an end of November launch date, however, I’ve had the space for more than 5 years and still it’s not ‘active’, so who knows.

How often will I post? That really depends. At least monthly. I’m shooting for weekly, but that may be too much, considering my schedule and the fact that though it’s hard to believe, there are days when I really have nothing interesting to say.

I will post opinions about news, software and hardware and other folk’s noise, and personal items including some photos, as well as (hopefully) short, accurate tutorials. Time will tell how this project shapes up.

For my first review I’ll cover what everyone is calling the ’social web 2.0′ browser, Flock. I will say that at first I HATED it. It had way too many toolbars, no real apparent ability to turn anything off, about 7 search boxes, and inscruitable, cartoon like icons that reminded me of an OS that is a joke.

Now that I’ve spent some hours with it, I can see some of it’s benefits. Not all, but some. Now the real question is: is Flock worth the “Eddy” that MacWorld mag awarded it last year? You’ll have to wait until Thursday, November 11th to find out.

I guess that’s it for now. Welcome friends and new readers, and please don’t be afraid to comment or write. I must warn you abusive, ignorant, silly messages from Holocaust deniers and other such will be deleted and ignored.

Have a Nice Day.

Last night, at around 10:06 (Central Time) the Apple Online Store went down. Most had guessed it was for nothing extremely new,. But maybe some new things bundled with Macs, such as the new Magic Mouse shipping with the Macs other than the new iMac. Well, here is what happened, Apple is now stocking up for the holidays! The nice graphic on the page, says that all orders over $50 get fast, free 24 hour shipping. This ties in with Apple’s other holiday doings like holiday boxings and gift wraps on products, and laser engravings on iPods. This is a great time to buy a new Apple product and with the free shipping, the possibilities are endless!

I’ve yet to step foot in a Microsoft Retail Store so to be fair, I can’t really compare

I’ve yet to step foot in a Microsoft Retail Store so to be fair, I can’t really compare Apple’s Retails to anything else. That’s too bad, because with no real other competition in sight, the Apple’s stores will continue to crop up in your favorite cities, NYC and Paris, even if NYC already has three.

An e-mail from Apple hit me today announcing the opening day for New York City’s newest Apple Store on the Upper West Side. The store will open at 10:00 AM on Saturday, November 14. Located at 67th St and Broadway, the fourth store will supposedly be the largest one in city, larger than the third one located on the lower west side. Apple fanboys are predicted to camp out days before trying to get a whiff of the new Apple air. No new hardware aside from the new Macs released last month are expected to accompany the opening. Rumors are floating around the net that new models for MacBook Pros and MacBook Airs are in the works, but according to Apple’s Phil Shiller, the holiday line up is set. So January guys?

Not only is Apple opening a new store in NYC this month, but they also opened up their first store in France yesterday, specifically in Paris, in the Carrousel du Louvre shopping center which is really just underground of the Louvre Museum. I am much more excited about this one than the Upper West Side store opening next week. For one thing, I was just in Paris and visited the Louvre in April, and I saw nothing, not even a small rumbling of possible Apple-y goodness being built there. Apple’s all-glass exterior for many of their retail stores blends well with the Louvre prism.

I’m sure the French are ecstatic and overjoyed. I’ll ask my cousins if they plan to check it out.

If you haven’t noticed, the past week or so has been filled with… well, nothing. Not surprised? Technically, due to our crazy activeness in writing posts, you might have seen this coming. So. I have a more valid excuse this week, at least it’s a little less vague as “I was busy.” And way better than a disappointingly honest “I was just too lazy to give a cat’s whisker.” Although the last two are usually true, this week Jehovah has decided to at least give me an alibi for all of this blog’s millions of viewers.

My terribly horrible (no, I mean it was truly terribly horrible) reason is this: the internet. Or rather, airport. Or that little black box with the blinking green lights that’s plugged into the computer. I don’t really know the difference, and one day I’m going to ask Steve Jobs exactly why those little white boxes are called airports. It doesn’t really make much sense to me. All I know is that all of those things have decided to quit, or go on strike. Either that or they’re going through puberty as moody adolescents who throw fits and have mood-swings. If you didn’t understand my analogy, I mean that my internet sucks. When it works it works for an hour or less and only connects to one computer. In fact, it’s a miracle that I’m able to even publish this, since this is really an old post that I’ll be saving (and then publishing) when my internet connects for more than five minutes.

Have you ever gone camping? And not your lame excuse kind of camping where you pitch a tent in your backyard (or neighbor’s yard, if you want an adventure), but I mean in the (sort of) untouched wilderness of Utah, or Montana, or um… the park down the street. But anyway, the point is that things, things that normally don’t matter begin to become a hassle. Like washing your hands for example, brushing your teeth, avoiding bear wastes, or producing wastes. All of these things are hard to do whilst in the wilderness (might or might not apply to neighbor’s backyard). When you finally decide to take the long trek to the outhouse at night, everyone jumps up to go with you, you all need to take care of unfinished business. Right?

Well, the same goes for bad internet. When you haven’t used it in weeks and your email is piling up, or you haven’t harvested your crops on FarmVille and they’re all wilted, every chance you get to go do those things–you’ll take it. Which pretty much explains why my family takes a laptop with us wherever we go. If we’re at a coffee shop with free wi-fi: Get out the laptop! Cruising through residential areas: Get out the laptop! We’ve become first-class internet pirates. Although we don’t wear pirate hats or have parrots/monkeys on our shoulders, we are real deal. Taking over (not really) your internet for as long as we can. So beware, until I get my internet fixed, I might be parked outside your home, using your internet that you paid for with your own money (if you don’t have a password, that is) or rolling down your street at five miles per hour, looking for more internets to plunder. As a consolation, you should be honored.

The Himalayan Tea Latte from Mac’s is surprisingly good. The China Chinese girl behind the counter really took pride in creating a cuppa. First she spooned in the powder, then she steamed the milk and left it to cool for 17 seconds (‘I need to let it thicken’). Next, she poured the bottom layer of milk in and whisked the mixture, before scooping out the top layer of foam to the mug and sprinkling cinnamon powder.

It was warm, creamy and fragrant, and the cinnamon left a hint of sweetness. Nice… Haha the Nat Geo mag belongs to Jianyue, if only I was reading that instead of notes.

We then moved to JustAcia at Dhoby Ghaut Station to study, it’s a suitable study spot, cheap food, powerpoints, cushy seats and the best part is the free flow drinks and ice-cream! Someone couldn’t tahan already and curled up to have a nap.

‘Observe the Yuntian in her natural habitat. The evolutionary advantage of being short allows her to lie down on any surface and sleep…’

On Tue I went to Raffles City Starbucks to study. By now you would have realized I like open sunny spaces. Ordered Earl Grey Tea, $4 for a medium and it was cleared accidentally when I went to the toilet! But the girl kindly made another cup for me =) Haha I stapled that tag on after that.

Oh check out the new toilets at Raffles City B1 beside MOS Burger, they’re comparable to the ones at Paragon but more funky. I’m obsessed with clean and well-designed toilets, plus they are a prime spot for camwhoring.

Had lunch at Soup Spoon with Jianyue while Yuntian jaga our studying spot. Had Simon and Garfunkel and Asian Tofu Salad set ($10.90), he had the Caesar Salad and naan instead. In a shrewd move we got apples and paper bagged it as a later snack.

Met Eileen and her bf there, I knew her from our Airport Guide days. Coincidentally, her bf was JY’s secondary school friend! Small world… Had dinner with Steve, my very tall and cute and unassuming cousin but I don’t have photos sorry. Next time!

I am on the verge of purchasing a new Macbook Pro to replace my almost 3-year old Macbook Pro. When glossy where first introduced on the Apple products, I was disgusted that they had gone so mainstream, but quickly said to myself: “They’ll never do it to the rest of the line or the rest of the ‘Pro’ series!” Boy, was I wrong. They did, and it now has consumers confused more than ever before. Yours truly is typing from a matte screen. My wife has an HP laptop which has a glossy screen. I have used it and try to “see” the reflections, and while they ARE there, they are only there when you focus on them. If your eyes stay on your work and you don’t shift focus, the reflection isn’t that bad – at least not on this HP laptop. I am very confused, for I am not sure whether I want matte or glossy. I thought I would never consider a glossy screen, but after a few trips to the Apple store, man – glossy looks pretty good and sharp! But after countless hours of reading reviews and seeing how upset many people are regarding the glossy screens on the Macbook Pro’s, it makes me want to wonder and reconsider my blind choice of going glossy. I compared them, side-by-side, and matte definitely looks sharper and more saturated. The matte screen looks washed out. (these were machines at the Apple Store). There was also a lot of reflection from the fluorescent lighting from the store on the glossy screen, while none on the matte. This was, distracting when looked directly at – but after a few minutes I was able to ignore the reflections. I think it all comes down to personal preference. I am, indeed, glad that Apple brought back the matte on the Macbook Pro’s, but they should also extend the option to the rest of their displays, including the iMac & Cinemas. Without any further ado, I close my rant with the following: Try them both, ask questions and see for yourself. No one can make these decisions for you. Reading more about matte vs glossy online just adds to the confusion because there always are two sides to the coin.
It’s still not time for me to upgrade, but hopefully in the near future I’ll be getting the new Macbook Pro with a 17″ glossy display.

What’s your best “friend” on a rainy day? Probably your umbrela! But wait, I’m talking about those days like Sundays where you stay at home looking at your Mac and thinking:”What should I do?” I like to edit photos using Aperture or maybe mix some songs in GarageBand. Surfing the web is also an option, but on Sundays I feel like there’s nothing new to see. The world seems to stop. My mail is “frozen”. Msn is not an option, people seem too tired to speak whatever the subject. So I came into this bar to write about my Mac Sunday feelings.
What do you do to entertain yourself?
Have a nice Mac Sunday.
