Dear PETA,

I am writing to formally complain about your invention of Swine Flu. Just like the bogus naming of such over-exaggerated diseases as Mad Cow and Chicken Pox, you and your other psycho, can’tivores need to stop trying to scare people away from meat by associating it with inconvenient ailments.

The real illness is how you and all your other vegetarian alliances need to use such intense tactics to build your population of joyless eaters, new-age Hollywood not-quite anorexics, and irrational health-nuts.

Why don’t you try something more fun? Like how gay men get recruited. They have cool slogans, like “Love blow jobs and anal sex? Hate foreplay? You may be fabulous for homosexuality!”

Sincerely,

At the height of the scare for the Mad Cow disease (BSE) in the Great Britain in 1990, the-then Tory

At the height of the scare for the Mad Cow disease (BSE) in the Great Britain in 1990, the-then Tory agriculture minister John Gummer famously attempted to allay fears about BSE by publicly feeding a burger to his four-year-old daughter, Cordelia. On May 6th, 1990, the press photographed Mr Gummer and his little girl at a boat show in Suffolk eating hamburgers. Although photographs of the event were staged and the burgers–presumably eaten by the duo–were in fact bitten into by a civil servant, Gummer subsequently become the most reviled politician to come out of the entire fiasco.

The first animal to fall ill with the BSE was in 1984 but it was only in November 1986 that the Ministry of Agriculture acknowledged that it was a new strain. In July 1989, the Europeans banned the British beef, but Gummer delayed a ban on beef domestically. These altercations between the Europeans and the Brits reached its height in 1996 when the European Commission announced the worldwide export ban on all British beef and the UK countered it with a policy of non co-operation with EU partners until ban is lifted.

Gummer remained defiant–the inquiry into the BSE crisis later asked him whether he had changed his eating habits during or after the crisis. Gummer replied that if anything he ate more beef because it was cheaper that it used to be.

by Gramma Willi Relatives – like so many of us, I find myself more and more pleased that being

by Gramma Willi

Relatives – like so many of us, I find myself more and more pleased that being an activist has become an easier road to walk. Victories for human rights and for the Earth increase in number and significance and we hear about them sooner than we used to. Everyone’s talking about green jobs. Our hopes are up, we may actually have an activist leading the free world – Yes We Can! It’s quite a time to be a part of it all, isn’t it?

One of my favorite stories about the changes in public attitude towards environment and health concerns feeding our children. So much has changed in my lifetime. As a young mother, it was almost impossible to find, let alone afford, organic baby food; it was tricky to find a place to breast-feed a baby in peace. These days, parents can find a wide variety of organic baby foods and formula in almost any supermarket; my grand-babies were all breast-fed (even the twins!) and fed organic baby foods. Now that the monopolies have more “natural” offerings available to consumers, are we happy with the production? Is there a next step that we need to take?

IICPH (International Institute of Concern for Public Health), whom I have worked with for many years, has a stellar reputation for providing independent, thoughtful analysis and corroborating community environmental health concerns. Most of our works for communities report on contamination of the air, land and water. It has always given me sadness when we report arsenic, tritium, mercury, lead or other highly damaging pollution where people have food gardens or farms. Food discussions at our youth and elder gatherings took on sad notes when realizing how very careful we must be where we grow our food, where it comes from and how it is prepared. We can make sensible choices when we consider our health.

The good news is, learning to choose, grow and cook good food provides not only sound environmental education, but when applied, benefits everyone’s health and saves people money! The truth is out there, people want clean food and groups like IICPH are uniquely positioned to help them to learn about it. Never has environmental health education been more timely and important… and good food is a delicious place to focus.

Perhaps the silver lining of the economic collapse is that the cards are on the table. Finally, the voices of old hippies and tireless activists are welcome and needed. The public continues to become informed and grows in wisdom as the next generation begins making its mark in history books and business reports. Let’s fill their bellies and minds with good things.

Remember that I love you

Before I get started I want to say something that is interesting, at least to me:

You can actually say [or write] traveling or travelling…weird, right?

They [who is this they?] say traveLing is preferred in American English where as traveLLing is used in British English.

I guess it’s like that whole potatoe and tomatoe war? [I like to spell potato and tomato with an E on the end, apparently a certain President did as well and people made fun of him for it, so I guess I'm in good company.]

I thought I should give a few hints, guide lines or simplistic rules for first time travelers or some experienced ones who have just been home for way too long, like me!

*woot woot*

Traveling for Dummies 101:

“Good morning class.”

“Good morning Miss Snitch!”

- Repeat after me: ¿Cómo está? Muy bien, gracias’

Anybody have/had a class like that? Yeah, *ahem*…and how much do you remember? Not much I’m guessing, at least for most of you…sad really.

Tips for the Level 1.0 Traveler:

DO NOT pack bombs, knives, scissors, water bottles or pointy objects in your carry-on luggage. If you do, you will be stripped…and not in the fun way either!!!

When in a foreign country, please, try to be nice to the natives and act like an intelligent person, remember, you are representing your home country while abroad. Want to know why we get bombed? Snobby blonds, yeah…it’s their fault. [I'm a blond, so don't get offended.]

DO NOT say, “I’m embarrassed” when in a Spanish-speaking country, unless you really are pregnant.

If you ever have leeches down your throat, gargle alcohol…burns ‘em right out.

DO NOT pee/urinate in a jungle pond/river/stream…unless you like having parasites swim up your…*ahem*…

While on the back of a renegade camel, DO NOT pull the reins back, as you would with a horse. To make the camel stop, you must pull on one side of the reins to make the camel run around in circles…once the ride is out of gas it will stop of its own accord.

Try not to wear lots of expensive jewelry when in a “bad” side of the city, you’re just telling everyone that you are a dumb, rich woman!

Put your wallet in your front pocket, or better yet in your bra [unless you're a guy then I would hope you don't own a bra] this will deter thieves from snatching it away.

If a guy starts to hit on you and is being “awfully” nice, remember to ask if he wants a ‘green card’ with that.

Remember to make friends with the hotel manager…they may be able to hide you from the gang that’s after you.

That’s all I could think of right now…Israel time is still ticking on my biological clock. I keep going to bed around 10:00 p.m. and waking up at 4:00 a.m. But, this happens a lot when you travel. Within a few weeks everything goes back to normal…unless you caught something nasty, like: Mad Cow!!!

In 2006, the world lost one of the most successful local-food advocates of all time: John Raeburn.

In 2006, the world lost one of the most successful local-food advocates of all time: John Raeburn. When Germany vowed to starve the U.K. in World War II by blocking food imports, Raeburn organized the “Dig for Victory” campaign. The agricultural economist encouraged citizens to plant crops in their own backyards or wherever there was land available. These urban gardens produced twice the amount of food that was previously imported. This spurred the “Victory Garden” campaign of the U.S. Today, many countries still employ this type of self sustaining enterprise. The urban gardens serve as air filters, help recycle wastes, absorb rainfall, provide food security, conserve fossil fuels and revitalize communities among other things.

Just a few more reasons to stay healthy and go vegetarian. . . Did you know that factory farmed eggs have about double the amount of cholesterol of their free-ranging counterparts? Free range eggs also have more vitamin E, beta-carotene and omega-3 fatty acids.

Bovine spongiform encephalopathy emerged in the 1980s is a serious disease that broke out in England. It’s other name? Mad cow disease. Soon afterward, the British began testing 100% of cows over two years old and removed all (downer) cows unable to walk on their own. As a result, the U.K. virtually destroyed BSE in two years. After the first U.S. case of mad cow emerged, the USDA required that 2% of all downer cows to be tested. To this day the USDA only requires volunteer information. One company tried to test all of its beef, but the USDA declared it illegal.

Next spring, declare war on the industrial agriculture industry! Grow just one or two items from your home (or more) and reap the benefits!

—–

On Tuesday, October 27, the Young Adult Book Club (for adult readers) met to discuss Judy Blume

On Tuesday, October 27, the Young Adult Book Club (for adult readers) met to discuss Judy Blume’s Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. The majority of the group felt this book reminded them of their own young adolescent experiences. Here’s what we covered in the discussion:

Should Margaret have had more interaction with her parents as she tried to reconcile her views on religion and spirituality?

The different relationship between Margaret and her various grandparents. Was Sylvia Simon overbearing, or were she and Margaret forging their own relationship outside of parental approval?

Various changes to the text from the first publication in 1970. We all agreed that we prefer books that haven’t been “updated” to keep with the times.

How Margaret has the sudden realization that she is cruel to other students, and how that character-defining moment was echoed in another one of our club picks, When You Reach Me.

With friends like Nancy, who needs enemies?

We were as usual a divided group. Many felt that there was at least some part of the story that they could relate to, but a few felt they couldn’t enter Margaret’s world at all.

Please, share your thoughts on Margaret in the comments section!

Our next pick is Going Bovine by Libba Bray. Cameron drifts through high school in his perfectly average way until he finds out he’s dying of the human version of mad cow disease. This mystical, comic novel follows Cameron and his motley crew on a quest for the cure. Bray writes with both humor and tenderness to produce a unique story that will stay with you. We’ve moved up the book club meeting from the last Tuesday of the month to Tuesday November 17, 6:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m, in case you’re traveling for the Thanksgiving holiday. Questions? Need to reserve your copy? E-mail or give us a call at 703-548-4092.

from: http://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E7%89%9B%E6%B5%B7%E7%B6%BF%E7%8B%80%E8%85%A6%E7%97%85

27 year actress Leelee Sobieski, nominated for an Emmy for her performance in the mini-series Joan of Arc (1999), and her fashion designer fiancé, Adam Kimmel, are expecting their first baby. A representative of Leelee’s has confirmed the news and also said that the couple is “thrilled” to welcome their first child in December.

Leelee is experiencing plenty of cravings with this first pregnancy and has a theory – “I think I like eating what little kids eat,” Sobieski told PEOPLE at the season opening of the Metropolitan Opera on Monday in New York City. Chowing down frequently on macaroni and cheese, Sobieski, 27, says that she is preparing for the baby by doing two things: relaxing and eating lots of ice cream.

Leelee appeared in this summer’s Public Enemies (alongside Johnny Depp), modeled for her fiancés Fall/Winter 2009 look book, and will be starring in the indie drama Mad Cow opposite Arrested Development’s Jeffrey Tambor.

All of us at le•top wish you congratulations on your upcoming new addition! We love ice cream too!

LEGAL: No, this is an illegal piece of graffiti.

CAN I SEE IT: Yes. You can check this piece out!

JACK PETRUBI, OUR RESIDENT ART EXPERT, SAYS:

This is another very political piece of graffiti. Although it’s hard at first to tell what’s going on, if you look closely you will notice that the man actually has the head of a cow and the cow has the head of a man. The statement is clear – it’s drawing a comparison between man and animal and perhaps the greed that we exhibit as people.

Given the nature of St. James’s Street and the number of large and global corporations that have established themselves here, it suggests that this graffiti isn’t accidentally placed. On this street, there is a Morrisons, a Tesco, a Co-operative and a Starbucks, all of which are considered money makers who will slaughter the competition without a moment’s remorse – and that is exactly what they have done to this lonely boarded up shop.

Then again, perhaps it’s just revenge of the mad cow!

Keep your eyes peeled for more graffiti like this. It’s not always easy to spot if you don’t know the situation in an area, but it can be well explained if you do. Good luck!

Hundreds of Israelis of Ethiopian descent demonstrated yesterday in Jerusalem against what they said was blatant discrimination against their community by the state. The protesters clashed with police briefly when they blocked a main road near the Foreign Ministry.

Eleven protesters suffered injuries in the clashes, as did four officers, and 25 arrests were made.

The demonstration was sparked by reports in the media last week that the Health Ministry had resumed its policy of discarding Ethiopian blood donated to the Magen David Adom blood bank, because it feared it was contaminated with disease. A decade ago, a similar policy led to protests by the Ethiopian community for what it terms “the policy of discrimination and racism” against its members.

“We are healthy people, like everyone else,” said Galit Maarat, 24, from Ashkelon. “It’s unjust, a terrible insult.”

Inbal Jacobs, a spokeswoman for the Health Ministry, said all blood donors must fill out a questionnaire that specifies that certain groups of people cannot donate blood, including those who have been in countries, like Ethiopia, where AIDS is widespread.

Jacobs said Israel followed international criteria that did not specifically target people from Africa, but rather anyone who had spent a considerable amount of time in countries at risk of blood-borne disease, including those who were in Britain during the outbreak of Mad Cow disease.

“There are certain guidelines, and these procedures are not unique to Israel,” she said.

However, the protesters also expressed their dissatisfaction with issues that they feel highlight the discrimination against the Ethiopian community in Israel.

The protesters demanded that affirmative action be applied in hiring civil servants of Ethiopian origin. They also asked that the wages of Ethiopian rabbis and religious leaders, known as Keis, be equal to those of neighborhood rabbis. In addition, they demanded that more people from the Falashmura community in Ethiopia be allowed to come to Israel.

The issue of religious discrimination, which is at the root of the Falashmura question, was also expressed by the demonstrators’ demand that Ethiopian Israelis be allowed to initiate marriage proceedings in any religious council, not only in Tel Aviv, as is done now.

The protesters made their way to the Prime Minister’s office, and demanded to meet with Ehud Olmert. Their request was refused.

Absorption Minister Ze’ev Boim met with representatives of the community on behalf of the government yesterday, and the two sides agreed that a ministerial committee on Ethiopian Jewry affairs would be set up.

It was also agreed that a committee of inquiry would be set up to examine the Health Ministry’s policy regarding Ethiopian blood contributions.

Boim also intervened to gain the release of those arrested by police.

The demonstrators dispersed after warning the government that “we are fd up with false promises; we want equality in every sense of the word. So far we kept quiet but we shall shout and express our protest against discrimination everywhere we stand.”

2. COWS

Is it just me, or does anyone else find it amazing that during the mad cow epidemic our government could track a single cow, born in Canada almost three years ago, right to the stall where she slept in the state of Washington? And, they tracked her calves to their stalls. But they are unable to locate 11 million illegal aliens wandering around our country. Maybe we should give each of them a cow..

3. THE CONSTITUTION

They keep talking about drafting a Constitution for Iraq …. why don’t we just give them ours? It was written by a lot of really smart guys, it has worked for over 200 years, and we’re not using it anymore.

4. THE 10 COMMANDMENTS

The real reason that we can’t have the Ten Commandments posted in a court house is this — you cannot post ‘Thou Shalt Not Steal’ ‘Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery’ and ‘Thou Shall Not Lie’ in a building full of lawyers, judges and politicians … it creates a hostile work environment.

Amish farmers lose court battle against RFID
Beasts must still be numbered, says court

The Register
July 31, 2009

Michigan farmers have failed in their attempt to block the introduction of RFID tags for cattle, despite arguments about the cost and the risk of upsetting an otherwise benevolent deity.

The case was bought by the catchily-named Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defence Fund (FTCLDF), representing small farmers in Michigan as well as a group of six Amish farmers: the former concerned about the cost of the tags, while the latter were more worried about eternal damnation brought on by applying numbers to God’s own cattle.

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) tried to get the case dismissed back in November last year, but only now has it managed to have the case thrown out on the basis that it is a Michigan ruling and thus subject to state laws, rather than part of any agenda being set by the USDA as part of the National Animal Identification System (NAIS), against which the plaintiff’s case was based.

Even in Michigan the law is intended to be voluntary, but the plaintiffs clearly believe that the voluntary status is just a ruse under which a mandatory ruling can be later implemented, which would threaten their livelihoods, or eternal souls, as appropriate. It’s worth noting, as the Judge did, that even Amish cattle already have numbered metal ear studs, so the contention that numbering cattle is against God’s law was already in shaky ground.

As for the USDA agenda, RFID Journal covers the case in some detail including quotes from a Michigan representative explaining:

“We implemented this program nearly 10 years ago… This was done pre-NAIS. Michigan is the only state with a mandatory electronic animal-tracking program, but it is also the only state with documented bovine TB cases”

Electronic tracking, in this instance, doesn’t necessarily mean RFID tags. The same thing can be, and is, achieved using the existing metal studs, with the data gathered electronically whenever the cattle are moved. But such assurances aren’t going to dent a good conspiracy theory about federal control.

At least 12 people, two of them suffering kidney failure, have been hospitalized in connection with a possible E. coli outbreak in beef suspected of having sickened people in nine states, federal health officials said Wednesday.

The victims may have become ill after eating beef produced by JBS Swift Beef Co. of Greeley, Colo., the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported. The number of people reported ill so far is 23.

The company recalled about 380,000 pounds of beef on Sunday after some illnesses were reported and a government investigation showed a possible connection to the company’s product. That recall expanded a June 24 recall of just over 41,000 pounds.

<snippet> The outbreak comes on the heels of a recall of Toll House refrigerated cookie dough products and just before the 4th of July holiday, when many Americans are preparing to grill hamburgers outdoors.<snippet>
