Beyoncé performing “Crazy In Love” during her I Am… Yours: An Intimate Performance at the Wynn Las Vegas. Shot at the Encore Theatre, LV, the footage will be aired on ABC on November 26, 2009.

Today I’ve been bumping a tune off of Adam Lambert’s new album. It really reminds me of the Michael Andrews version of “Mad World” (below), it’s just got that feel and vibe…. Nice track Lambert, nice track.

Ad essere passata alla storia è infatti la sua cover firmata da Michael Andrews e cantata da Gary Jules che è diventata colonna sonora di importanti film e serial come Csi, E.R. – Medici in prima linea – Cold Case, Nip/Tuck, Smallville e anche per la pubblicità del videogioco Gears of War per XBox 360. Quando la nuova Mad World venne trasmessa lo stile vocale di Jules fu paragonato a quello di Michael Stipe, voce dei R.E.M.

I love a good remix, especially when the original was good but not quite the best it could be. I also love it when an artist who’s perceived to be on top of the world releases a hit and another up and coming artist takes a leap of faith and remixes that hit and succeeds.

Yes, New Edition was at the pinnacle of R&B back in the day but if this wasn’t evidence that these brothers were performers/entertainers – not singers – then maybe this will help.

Boyz II Men even remixed their ad-libs and those sounded better.

But the reason for this blog is to actually plug an artist I’d love to hear more from by the name of Novel. One of my favorites from Novel is actually a remake of Gary Jules’ Mad World.

It’s a very bold statement to open up a door using someone else’s salutation but if you can pull it off and sound good doing it – like Novel did with his version – then more power to you. By the way, no one – and I mean NO ONE – will ever succeed at doing this when it comes to Stevie Wonder.

I don’t enjoy looking at things like this- but at the same time, I feel it’s my obligation. People turn their heads to violence, injustice, pain and misfortune all too often, never realizing that it can happen to them as well. I am proud to be an American, however, that doesn’t mean I believe my life is worth any more than the next one’s- no matter where on the globe they may be. I learn about these situations and events to pay my respects to the victims, so their memory is not lost; so hopefully through awareness, I can protect myself and my family from this mad world we live in- where all of us are equally vulnerable.

This sort of violence has existed through out history- nothing has changed. Nothing has gotten better. Please don’t get me wrong, I love my country and the men and women who have died for this country. While our government has not always had the best intentions, our government is not our country. WE are our country. WE are the ones who make this country so great. I am still young-  25 years old to be exact. I will be 26 in January. Having a close relationship with your grandparents can be very beneficial- and educational. They have taught me that life is certain for no one. Not in Africa, not in Europe, not in America. My grandmother celebrated her 93rd birthday today- I can’t even imagine what the world must look like through her eyes.

I can’t speak for everyone, I can only speak based on what I know to be true- in my personal experiences and through people I know. A lot of people my age are not concerned with the fact that through out history people have been oppressed- and that even now in 2009, people are still being oppressed. Murdered. Starved. Sick. Imprisoned. Enslaved. Poverty stricken. Homeless. Mothers burying their children. Men and women fighting in foreign lands, never to make it home. People digging caves to be able to practice their religion. For every problem we think we have here, there are people out in the world with 99 more. But it doesn’t affect us. We continue our 9-5’s, showing no emotion. The nightly news comes on and you hear about 16 people dying from a car bomb- and you change the channel because it doesn’t make you feel good. The child whose body was found in a shallow grave makes you hug your kids tonight, but it’s old news in the morning. We have a false sense of security here in America. It wasn’t very long ago that we oppressed our own people- right here in America. Blacks being hung and lynched, harassed and raped…..Japanese Americans being rounded up and placed in concentration camps. Mothers giving up their disabled children to mental institutions for fear of being ostracized from society. And let’s not forget who we got this land from in the first place. 

You see, we may not all be racist as far as going out and inciting hate crimes…. but we do have that sense of entitlement here. We do have a sort of superiority complex. We don’t take dyer situations seriously enough, because it’s not happening to us….it’s happening to “them”. Forget that “they” are real people like you and I, with real feelings like you and I- they aren’t us. So we carry on. This is what makes people vulnerable- to live in that altered state of reality, invincible to the world. We turned our backs on our own people during Katrina.

Here are a few words of wisdom: when you watch the nightly news and hear about the next child that has been murdered, when you hear about the next man that was blown up, when you hear about the next family who lost everything they have in life- take a few minutes to put yourself in their  shoes. Imagine that being your child, your husband, your family…. Stop being so naive as to think that things that have taken place since the beginning of time and continue to go on in the world around us to this very day cannot happen here in our country. These things HAVE happened- and they will happen again.

As I sit here in my carrel on the C floor of Firestone, flipping through Official and National Languages in Africa, I make it to the very back of the book, to the card they stamp the due dates onto.

I see a red CARREL USE 1997-1998 stamped next to my green CARREL USE 2009-2010. For some reason, there’s something comforting about this. Someone else was sitting in a carrel over ten years ago too, holding this book, also struggling through a thesis.

Det är för mycket skit på för kort tid nu.

En del av nationella provet imorn, två inlämningar tills på fredag samt en massa annan skit. Men jag kanske inte är den som ska klaga kan man tycka, då det finns de som har mycket mer i skolan. Grejen är att jag inte vant mig vid hur snabbt skolan startade nu i trean och inte har jag vant mig vid det tempo som vi håller heller. Shit!

Musik måste vara det som får mig mest lugn i dessa tider tror jag. Musik och att prata med vänner om all skit man ser och upplever. I dessa tider så känns det extra viktigt för mig också, det blir liksom ett litet ljus i det mörker som jag tycker omger mig.

Nej utan musik och vänner hade jag fan inte kunnat somna om nätterna!

Det blir nog till att jag tipsar om ett par bra låtar som faktiskt lugnar ner mig och utesluter mig från omvärlden, då jag omges av orosmoment.

We highlighted her new album and posted some samples of her new stuff.

So does everyone remember that time this summer that all those celebrities were in DC and I was the only one that saw one? I do. In case you didn’t almost come running out of your office to confirm my sighting of JAKE GYLLENHAAL on M street at Dean and Deluca (there is obviously a reason we love this place so much), let me remind you: I saw Jake Gyllenhaal at the Dean and Deluca on M and Wisconsin Potomac.

That’s not really the cool part. The cool part is that not only did Jake and I make eye contact (helllooo), but he was dressed just like me. For the record, this says more about me looking like a little boy 75% of the time than about Jake being a woman, which I don’t think he is (though @workchucks can correct me- is he a secret ghey?). He was wearing a gray v-neck American Apparel shirt (how original), chucks (though not of the work variety, these were grungy like MINE!), a straw fedora (see any of the many pictures on the “facebook” in which a member of the #team is wearing my straw fedora, either in SSR or the DR), and Ray Ban Clubmasters! I have fake Clubmasters!

You know those times that people say celebrities should be their friends? Well, even if Jason Segel should be my friend, Jake should be my shopping buddy. Jason and I couldn’t shop at the same stores- I don’t fit in oaf clothes.

What made me think of this? Well, it was kind of roundabout. I was stealing music off blogs because I’m a poor grad student and I can’t afford the new Brandi Carlile album OR the Glee Soundtrack. I want them both, so take note potential Chanukah-gifters. I stumbled upon this, which almost made jappy cry into her coffee (note: she should be crying. she’s not coming to london, where the weather is fine and the girls are finer). Anyway, couldn’t find the Glee soundtrack, and couldn’t find the new Brandi Carlile single which is awesome by the way. BUT (BUT) I found this, and it’s better. See below.

Two things I love: Brandi Carlile and Donnie Darko, which is a really stupid movie to love I know I KNOW, but I like it, ok? So lay off. If you haven’t seen it, you should, but if you don’t like it don’t come crying to me. Maggie Gyllenhaal is in it though, so you should like it.

The entire movie is worth it for this one part.
