• Fosse pure l’edizione più brutta di sempre, Lucca Comics & Games è comunque la cosa che più si avvicina al Paradiso, non c’è storia.
• Nonostante la pessima gestione, nonostante i cambi di binari all’ultimo secondo, nonostante il caos, viaggiare in treno è troppo comodo. E farlo su un treno pieno di cosplayer è ancora meglio.
• Lucca è magnifica e visitarla tutta per cercare i vari stand sparsi per la città è bellissimo.
• Il ramen rientra, assieme al sushi e a quasi tutto il cibo giapponese, tra quelle cose che “son tanto carine da vedere, me le mangerei con gli occhi, ma sono agli antipodi rispetto ai miei gusti”. Purtroppo.
• Un unico appunto: troppa troppo troppa gente. Capisco che in questo modo si puo’ parlare di grande successo, ma ingrandire un pochino gli stand proprio non si puo’?
• I ragazzi che stavano agli ingressi degli stand si dividevano in quelli che “è più che sufficiente mostrare il braccialetto, tanto manco ti guardo” e quelli che “fammi controllare il biglietto, brutto nerd spilorcio“. Ed era possibile distinguerli solo nel momento in cui entravi (ovvero quando mostravi il biglietto a quello che se ne fregava totalmente o quando ricevevi la minaccia dall’altro perchè ti limitavi a tenerlo in tasca).
• Sono riuscito ad evitare chiunque regalasse qualsiasi tipo di omaggio, ma in compenso mi sono beccato tutti quelli in cerca di donazioni. Ho una certa abilità, non c’è che dire.
• Posso dire di aver visto una gigantografia di un Rabbids, una di Maxwell, un centinaio di peluche nintendosi neanche troppo cari e un sacco di roba talmente kawaii da far venire il diabete. E non ho preso niente (neanche una foto) di tutto ciò.
• Veder spuntare ovunque (ma proprio ovunque) gente con quelle splendide maschere da Rabbids e non avere la  più pallida idea di dove fossero distribuite, bè, mi ha fatto sentire un vero idiota. Non aver provato la demo di Red Steel 2 ha sortito più o meno lo stesso effetto.
• Quei ragazzi che hanno fatto il cosplay da emoticon sfoggiando quei cartelli/bandierine hanno tutta la mia stima. Se siete all’ascolto, palesatevi.
• Non l’avrò visto al cinema, ma posso dire di aver comprato il dvd di Ponyo sulla scogliera con 11 giorni di anticipo rispetto alla data di uscita. Tiè.
• Alla fine c’è sempre questa triste legge per cui, uscito dagli stand, oltrepassati i confini lucchesi e sulla via del ritorno, ti penti di non aver comprato abbastanza. E cominci a fare il countdown per l’edizione successiva (-354, comunque).

I’ve had these boxes of Fukagawa porcelain dinnerware for years…my grandma let me have them (a find from the depths of her basement) and I have just hauled the packages around from apartment to apartment without a clue what to do with them.  I had three sets total, but used one as a hostess gift a while ago and somehow lost the order slip that dated the pieces (may have been the 60’s).

Since we’re still in the process of unpacking the new apartment, I thought it was about time these puppies came out of hiding.

The glue was old and brittle, flaking off all over the table as I tore off the paper tape…the boxes went out and the porcelain went up on the fireplace mantel in our dining room.  The discontinued pattern is called “Full Crop” and I kinda love looking at it.

I think they were waiting for a spot in this room.

Este é um best seller mundial publicado em 1986 e escrito pelo falecido Akio Morita, cofundador e ex-presidente da SONY. É um livro autobiográfico que conta a sua vida e a sua filosofia por trás de uma das companhias japonesas mais respeitadas no mundo e como ela mudou a percepção do mundo em relação aos produtos eletrônicos japoneses. Houve um tempo em que produto japonês era sinônimo de baixa qualidade, acredite se quiser, mas isso foi lá pelos anos 50 e começo dos 60.

Neste livro, é possível entender a sociedade e a cultura japonesa do ponto de vista do autor e como um país que tem apenas 20% do seu território habitável e cultivável e quase sem nenhum recurso natural conseguiu tornar-se um gigante econômico, com o desenvolvimento tecnológico exemplificado pelos esforços da Sony de criar produtos cada vez menores, utilizando menos recursos (matéria prima) possível.

23 anos depois da primeira publicação, ainda é  um livro muito atual pelo seu conteúdo visionário. Pensando na crise financeira recente, não poderia ser mais atual, por sinal, pois nele contém possíveis respostas para um modelo mais saudável de existênica econômica.

O livro foi originalmente escrito em inglês, pois Morita quis dirigir para as sociedades ocidentais (principalmente Estados Unidos) os seus pensamentos. Embora ele seja japonês, a versão no idioma dele que eu li, é uma tradução do texto original em inglês. Existe também uma versão em português, (esgotada, mas pode ser que exista em algum sebo).

Além de ter sido visionário, Akio Morita era um fofo, pelo visto. Olha o carinho que o Michael tinha por ele… (fita com mensagem do Michael Jackson para o Morita se recuperar da doença que acabou matando-o)

Mein Freund und ich waren vor nicht all zu langer Zeit ( 2 Wochen? ) Im Museum uns die Austellungen Art Brut Japan und Made in Japan anzuschauen.

Und hiiier sind die Bilder aus Made in Japan, bei Art Brut war es leider nicht erlaubt Fotos zu machen =)

Sollte noch jemand vorhaben Made in Japan zu besuchen, es ist bis zum 28. September noch in Wien. Ich fand diese Ausstellung jeden Cent wert und wirklich interessant.

Bridge:

I purchased a USA made Fender Mustang bridge on eBay from a seller with a reliable feedback rating, waiting until I found one at a competitive price, $32.90 shipped.

Pickups:

A friend recommended replacing the stock pickups with Seymour Duncan Antiquity II Jaguar. The Antiquity II’s are hand wound direct drop-in reproductions of the original 60’s Fender Jaguar pickups. These are arguably some of the best pickups you can buy for the money. I’ve heard they’re better than Fender’s current American Vintage Reissue model. Again I searched eBay waiting to find the best deal. I ended up paying $133.90 shipped for a pair from a reliable seller.

Jaguar/Jazzmaster floating tremolo/tailpiece.

Another optional upgrade is to replace the existing floating tremolo with one that was manufactured in the US. The American version seems to have higher tension. Although this upgrade isn’t critical it might be desired if your intending to replicate the American Vintage Reissue (AVRI) setup. I purchased mine from Angela’s Instruments http://angela.com for a total of  $89.70 shipped.

Electronics:

I purchased high quality USA made electrical components in a kit from http://acmeguitarworks. A great online retailer selling rewiring kits for numerous Fender models.  $79.00 shipped.

Pick guard:

I purchased a custom made pick guard from Tony at http://pickguardian.com. He does great work. I sent him my pick guard that he used as a template. He returned it with my custom made guard in less than 2 weeks. He did a great job using high quality materials and fine craftsmanship.  $57.00 shipped.

Copper shielding:

The final accessory I purchased for the upgrade was a sheet of adhesive copper shielding (to prevent hum and radio interference) from http://guitarpartsresource.com. I placed it on the backside of the new pick guard and within the pickup cavities.  $13.44 shipped.

Professional setup

After acquiring all of the parts necessary for the upgrade I took my guitar to Bronson Guitar Works here in Scottsdale Arizona for a full setup and fret dressing (leveling frets to match the new bridge).  I have taken several guitars there previously and they do great work. Once again they did a great job, rewiring, replacing the pots and switches, setting the intonation, setting up the new bridge, tremolo and fret dress. I had it restrung with a set of .11 DR electric guitar strings.

Summary:

When I got it home I shielded the cavities and the pick guard and it was ready to go. I played it for a couple of days at home, immediately noticing a great improvement in the overall sound quality. The real test was practicing with my band at a louder volume. It sounded great! The unaffected guitar signal was very pure and “woody”. Effect pedals sound transparent and more dynamic. This guitar has become my favorite to play for a few reasons. I find the neck and string spacing very comfortable for my hands, it sounds great and the lake placid blue finish with custom parchment/pearloid pick guard looks beautiful.

In the end I spent about $605 on the upgrade, which includes labor. I could have done in more cheaply by not getting the fret dressing, but it plays great and I have no complaints.  Total amount invested in the guitar is now about $1150.  A relative deal when you consider an American Vintage Reissue Jaguar sells new for $1900+. I’ve done my best to be as accurately as possible with the information I’ve listed.

In the near future I would like to open this site to allow users to post articles describing their own experiencing upgrading Fender Offset Guitars, and perhaps someday, other brands and models as well.

I purchased my CIJ (Crafted in Japan) Fender Jaguar about 6 months ago on Craigslist for a total of $550, which included a hard case. A great price as the guitar retailed for about $900 when purchased new in 2003.

I was lucky to have a friend who is very knowledgeable about Fender offset guitars, and made excellent upgrade recommendations.

The first thing I decided to upgrade was the pickups as the stock CIJ Jaguar pickups are not very good. Second I’d upgrade the bridge as Jaguar bridges can be troublesome. There is an inherent design flaw in that the guitar string sits on a screw-like threaded saddle, which can be easily knocked out of place if the string is picked with moderate force. Additionally there are tiny setscrews that are used to adjust the height of the string saddles that protrude just high enough to cut one’s hand if you’re not careful. A very common upgrade is to swap out the Jaguar bridge with a Fender Mustang bridge because both have a similar style floating tremolo design. In fact the Mustang Bridge is a drop-in replacement needing no unusual adjustments.

Next I’d replace the electronics including pots, switches and wiring and finally the pick-guard, which was a purely aesthetic upgrade.

With the next post I’ve outlined my experience and costs for all of the upgrades  performed.
