Last Wednesday we took Madeleine to JC Penney’s portrait studio for her/our first family portraits.

I’m including some of my favorites throughout this post for your viewing pleasure.

Originally I had this grand idea that we would get portraits in our Halloween costumes as well, but we all thought that was way too much fuss once push came to shove, so we will be saving the costumes for next year and will do Halloween portraits then.

Adorable, right?

It’s a good thing we decided against it. She was definitely done with photos for the last bit of the photo shoot. But it wasn’t before she managed to get some cute ones of her just in her little diaper! hehe!

Now, here are some additional photos. The rest can be found by clicking here.

I do not know what is going on, but I am one frustratd mommy. Here I was, so proud and over the moon

I do not know what is going on, but I am one frustratd mommy.

Here I was, so proud and over the moon that I’d been so successful at re-training Madeleine to go to bed in her own room, in her own bed. She’d been sleeping anywhere from 6-10 hours a night. WOOHOO! And then on some days, she’d wake up to eat and get her diaper changed and she’d go right back to sleep. Fantastic! I was a happy mommy. Ooooh sooooo happy.

It looks like I spoke too soon. I do not know what is different this week but she’s fussy beyond belief in the evenings (she’s relatively happy during the day and takes naps?), has gotten into a schedule where she is hungry literally ALL night from about 5-6 pm on, and then won’t stay asleep at night after being up all evening. What is going on?

We think she may have a touch of a cold. Alex and I have both been feeling not so fantastic and she’s been coughing a little bit. **Don’t worry! I’ve been taking her temperature and watching her like a hawk to make sure it’s not the type of sickness that requires a doctor’s visit** But we don’t know for sure.

I also think that we managed to greatly disrupt her fragile and new schedule on our trip to Olympia for Thanksgiving. Afterall, she’d only been sleeping through the night for a week when we threw her little schedule into chaos.

But whatever it is, I am so tired and sad that it’s so disrupted. And I’m incredibly frustrated that I can’t do anything in the evenings because she wants to eat for hours on end with only brief 5-20 minute breaks. If I hand her off to Alex, she screams. **sigh** This makes being a good housekeeper and wife rather difficult.

My schedule has been to take a shower as soon as I get up, usually around 7:30-8am and she’s still sleeping. Get as much done as I can while she is still asleep and then feed and change her. She will typically go down for another nap around 10-11 which is when I run errands (lately) or try to do some housework if I’m not exhausted from the night before. If I am, I will go to sleep too. Then baby M is back up anywhere from 12-2pm and she eats and naps off until 5ish when the hellish exhausting feedings begin. And of course, because I am staying home right now, about 6pm is usually when Alex asks me what I have planned for dinner. How the heck am I supposed to cook when she won’t let me stop feeding her?

So I go all night and try to make dinner, Alex is pretty patient, but we’ve had some late meals in the last week and a half. Like, anywhere from9:30-10:45. How embarassing. Either that or he gives up and goes and gets us something from a quickie place like Subway, etc.

I just finally got the baby girl to bed (it was about 1:20 am when she finally went down) MUCH past her 10pm bedtime that I’ve been trying to scoot earlier in the evening.

HELP!!! I’m willing to hear any and all suggestions.

Mine and Chris’ families, to be exact.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to make it to my family’s actual Thanksgiving supper due to some poor planning on my part, and a lot of traffic–but these are some highlights from a visit with a very small portion my family visiting from Colorado the day before Thanksgiving. I never get to see them, so it was really nice.

This photo is just awkward enough that I feel it deserves to be posted. These are two of my cousins. Jessey was not down to be an active participant in the picture-taking process, but my mom managed to get her in the background. I also like how mine and Madeleine’s feet are cut off. It adds a little… je ne sais quoi.

Mother and daughter. Tobia, my cousin Michael’s wife, and Madeleine.

This is lady, Michael and Tobia’s new dog. She is a mini-dachshund puppy, and she has puppy breath. Puppy breath is probably one of my top 5 favorite things.

I could take photos of Jessey all day long.

And here is Colton, the newest baby in our family. (We’ve had 5 new babies on my mom’s side of the family this year, and Chris’ sister also had a baby.) That is my aunt Loey holding him. She is a proud grandma! And a good one, too. When my sister and I were little, she used to sit with us in the grass for hours and read us things like James and the Giant Peach.

–

I spent Thanksgiving Day with Chris’ family, who were all incredibly tolerant of my incessant picture-taking, as per usual.

Riley and his Grandpa Ed man-snuggling. Riley is practically impossible to take pictures of because he is two and he never, ever stops moving. Except to go the the bathroom. I had the pleasure of taking him to go pee, at which he is quite adept. And speedy!

Madeleine had a very busy first Thanksgiving. We spent the day and evening down in Olympia visiting with Alex’s side of the family.

First, we stopped by his mom and Tim’s place to say hello before they headed up to Seattle to spend the evening with Tim’s children. Baby M got to spend some time being held by both Tim and Karli, although she was a bit of a fuss monster for some reason and was awake and eating and fussy nearly the entire 2-1/2 hours we were visiting.

Then we were off to Steve and Joan’s. Again, we continued with the awake baby and she fed off and on nearly the entire time we were there and was fussing quite a bit as well. I’m not sure why she wouldn’t sleep yesterday. If it was just too much stimulation and she couldn’t handle it? But she’s normally such a great sleeper. In fact, she has slept nearly all day today to make up for it. LOL!

Joan and Steve put together a fantastic dinner – which was just as delicious cold as it was hot, I’m sure, thanks to Madeleine’s lack of desire to do anything but eat. Hey, she knows what the spirit of Thanksgiving is! EAT EAT EAT!!!

And now, here are some photos!!

As I’ve mentioned before, I was pretty anxious to see Madeleine smile for the first time. Granted, she has been smiling involuntarily for a long time, but I mean the first REAL smile. You know, the first time you smile real big at her and she smiles back at you intentionally.

For the past several days I’ve been wondering if she was smiling intentionally or not…wasn’t sure. But I was definitely getting a lot more smiles than I had been. And then, this morning, it happened. She is always a bit more cheerful in the mornings after a long night’s sleep (we’re up to 9 hours with no waking up!!) and has been very smiley in the mornings for the past few days.

So this morning I got up with her, changed her, fed her and then played with her a little bit. You know, cooing at her. Making faces at her. Having her stand while I hold her and praising her. And then, I saw a glimmer of a smile and I smiled really big and almost immediately I got a HUGE grin from her!!! Awww my sweet girl. That just made my day!

I’m working on getting a picture of her huge grins, but those are kind of tough to get. There are some pretty cute ones in the post right before this one though.

My aunt Beverly recently got in touch after talking to my mom and finding out about baby Madeleine. She said that she wanted to send her something as a gift, and it arrived two days ago!

Tummy time on the play gym

Alex and I opened it up and it was a play gym. How fun!!! So I got busy setting it up and attaching all the little toys for her to explore. She has a great time with it. She especially likes the musical star and the mirror at this age, since she can’t grab at the other toys yet. However she also really loves to just lay on the mat and look at all the bright colors and fun things.

We have it set up in her room in the middle of the floor so that when I have changed her diaper and need to set her down for a minute while I go to wash my hands, she can do her tummy time while listening to music and/or she can lay on her back and look at all the bright colors and fun shapes. I’m sure it will only get more fun for her as she’s able to interact with it more. But this way she doesn’t scream and cry when I put her down on her tummy and/or back to go wash my hands! I’m sure her little brain is just absorbing all the information.

Ever since we found out we were expecting, Alex talked about getting a johnny jumper for her. It’s the one item he was obsessed with. So I made sure to buy one for her/him.

Hmmm...What is this thing?

Well, now that she’s managing to hold her head up on her own, we thought we’d break it out. She LOVES when we hold her on our laps and assist her upper body while she pushes off our legs with her lower body. She has strong legs!! She can keep herself standing for quite some time now. We figured she’d do well with it since she loves to kick her legs and push off of us.

What's going on? I'm going sideways!

She’s been in it a few times since then and does pretty well. After a little bit she gets frustrated and wants to be taken out, much like tummy time frustration. Maybe her little legs and neck are tired from holding her up!!

Woo! I did a 180!!

She learned that with a few kicks of her feet, she could move herself, and started turning herself.

I’m sure that as she gets a little bigger, she’s going to love it more and more.

Madeleine has a onesie that says that, but she clearly doesn’t believe it anymore (thank goodn

Madeleine has a onesie that says that, but she clearly doesn’t believe it anymore (thank goodness!!) Yes, that’s right. This darling girl of mine has learned the art of sleeping through the night! WOOHOO!!

Knowing that she is a product of my husband’s and mine, this shouldn’t be all that surprising. Afterall, we both love our naps and sleeping in. In fact, my husband can be asleep on a car ride in .05 seconds of getting on the road. (ha!)

I mentioned in my last post that she’d slept for 5 hours straight on Wednesday night. Then Thursday and Friday night she slept for 8+ hours both nights!! Woke up to eat and went back down for 3-4 hour naps. YAY! Last night she reverted backwards a little bit and was up after just 6 hours and only napped for a couple of hours after getting fed. But I’ll stilll take that as opposed to the schedule of being up every 1-3 hours that she had been on.

We’ve even started a little bedtime routine. Starting between 6 and 7pm, she eats off and on until anywhere from 10:45-12:45. I’m trying to slowly get that time frame down to where she’s going to bed earlier, but so far it has just resulted in her waking up every 20-30 minutes after being put down to eat again.

Then we go upstairs and she gets her diaper changed. She gets put in her sleep sack swaddler and then we read a bed time story in her glider. So far she seems to love the Madeline and the Bad Hat book the best. My guess is that it has a lot of words and rhymes, so she must like the cadence that I read it at. Tonight we read “The Itsy Bitsy Spider” After her bedtime story we continue rocking until her little eyes flutter closed and she falls asleep and I can put her in her bed without waking her up. As long as she’s ready to go to bed and her belly is completely full, she’s great at falling asleep for bed time!

Madeleine has officially made it through her first month of life here on the ‘outside’.

Madeleine has officially made it through her first month of life here on the ‘outside’. And even more importantly, this means that we as parents have survived the first month, too!

One month old, already!

Jo recommended the fantastic idea of taking a picture of Madeleine every month of this first year in the same spot as a way to show her growth progression. Fabulous! So, here’s her first one, to the right. Note the adorable glider mentioned in this post. It arrived while my parents were here for their visit. We just love it and spend a good amount of time rocking her back to sleep. In fact, I just finished rocking her to sleep for the night in that chair. It’s like a miracle chair for putting her to bed.

So, what has happened in this first year of her life? Let’s recap:

Madeleine made quite the dramatic entrance, scaring both her mom and dad and doctor and nurses in the process.

She had her first visitors at the hospital. Alex’s mom, step-dad, dad and step-mom and Trevor all came to see her! We also had lots of friends stop by and my boss even made an appearance.

4 days after her birth we went for a check-up at the family care center and she was already back to her birth weight!

October 24th, my parents showed up for their visit to meet the baby girl.

Madeleine got to go visit her parents’ birthing teacher and show herself off in her Halloween costume

Madeleine celebrated her very first Halloween.

Madeleine experimented with how her face muscles work…you can re-visit that here.

She has learned how to hold up her head and swivel it around for extended periods of time. She just loves looking around at everything.

She had her first trip to Olympia to visit those members of her extended family that she had not yet met.

She lost her umbilical cord and had her first bath!

She has already gone to the doctor’s twice. Once at 14 days and once for her almost 1 month check-up.

She had her first tummy time session at about 2 weeks old. And has since started getting the hang of trying to roll her hips and swing her leg over. Now she just needs a bit more oomph behind it and she’ll be rolling over. She’s also been pushing with her arms a bit more.

She’s had many a meal out with her parents and friends.

She even went to her first book club at Jo’s house with her boyfriend, Aiden. (tee hee!) He did not seem pleased to see his mom holding another baby.

Jo was kind enough to loan us their infant swing, so Madeleine has had her first ride(s) in the swing. It even allowed me to cook a decent meal for Alex one evening. Victory!

Madeleine went for her first walk around the neighborhood while my parents were here visiting, and we’ve gone on several more since then, when weather permits.

Madeleine has been moved into her own room and now sleeps in her own bed in her room each night. Again, victory!!

Madeleine had her first successful night sleeping for an extended stretch of time last night. She went a whole 5-ish hours from about 1 in the morning until 6:30am, after Alex got home from work.

She has had her own special reading sessions with both her grandma and also with her mom and dad. She loves being read to at night before bed.

She has been introduced to the pacifier. Although, oddly, she still prefers our finger.

And now, for photos!!

Yesterday we took Madeleine to her 1 month well baby check-up. We switched doctor’s this time because I didn’t realize that the first Doctor we took her to was a D.O., not an M.D. Alex and I weren’t super comfortable with that, so this time she went to see Dr. George, who we both like a lot! It’s hard to describe the difference, but we both felt he was more scientific based in his comments and a bit less…opinion based?

Is it really possible that she’s a whole month old already?? The answer to that is actually, no. She’s not a whole month old already. That doesn’t happen until next week, but this was when we could get in to see the Dr. we wanted to see, so we’ll be going back for her Hepatitis B shot next week. Let me get back to the point though – where is time going? It’s going by far too quickly! Our little girl has already grown so much, it’s crazy!

So, once again, here are her stats:

Weight: She started out weighing 8lbs 8ozs at birth, went down to 8lbs 4ozs and was at 8lbs 13ozs last time we were at the doctor. This time? She was at 9lbs 8ozs. She’s in the 50-75% for weight still. I just can’t believe she’s gained a whole pound already. I wasn’t kidding when I mentioned that she’s a great eater. I suppose there’s no need to be worried about her cluster feedings.

Length: She’s now at 22 1/4″ long. So she dropped to the 90th percentile from the 95th that she was at last time she was measured. She might just end up being like me. Who knows. According to my mom, this is what happened with me. I started out really big/long and slowly stopped growing as quickly as other kids.

A few notable facts:

Madeleine started taking her first vitamin, per the doctor’s recommendations. She is taking Vitamin D supplements now. Just one little drop per day.

Naughty daddy!!

We got in trouble for co-sleeping with her without the use of a baby co-sleeper. The risk of SIDS was the doctor’s major concern. That scared Alex from sleeping with her in bed anymore. I guess I just needed the Dr. to scare him straight. LOL So now we are trying to break her of this habit, which is quite the task. **sigh** She has gotten so spoiled by always being held or sleeping with us that she almost refuses to go down in her own bed. The pack’n'play has been moved out of our room (her crib is not here yet) and into her room and she will sleep in her room, in her bed, from now on. Even if it kills me. Which last night, it almost did. I didn’t get more than an hour of sleep at a time last night, and an hour only happened once or twice. I’m hoping for better success tonight.

The doctor confirmed that her noisy breathing is still normal. Evidently babies have somewhat floppy airways and that’s what causes this noisy breathing. Good to know!

The doctor confirmed that her excessive eye goobers are normal, too. Baby tear ducts are so small that they have a hard time handling the volume of tears the eye makes and that’s what leads to this. He showed me how to massage the tear ducts to help with drainage, so I do that a few times a day.

We asked when it was ok for her to use a pacifier without disrupting breast feeding and he said it was more than ok now. It has helped a TON in keeping her asleep and/or soothing her when I put her down to do anything other than hold her. LOL

The doctor also stressed the importance of tummy time. We had been doing that with her anyway, but would pick her up when she started to get super fussy. He said that the frustration is good because it is what will motivate her to push up with her upper body and learn to roll over and crawl. Today after we let her fuss for a bit, she started moving her arms around and looked like she was trying to push off with them!

The exciting news is that within the next 2 weeks or so, she should start smiling socially!! One of the very early signs of autism is the lack of a social smile between 4 and 6 weeks of age. So now I’m all paranoid and am making all sorts of silly faces at her and then smiling really big to try and get her to smile back at me. haha!

The doctor said that her neck strength is good and she’s holding her head up on her own (which we knew already) and he’s not concerned about anything there.

He also said that because I had pretty severe anemia while pregnant, that we may start her on solid foods a tad bit earlier than normal. We’ll take that as it comes. She was approved for a pacifier though…and thank goodness for that! She loves it – and I think it’s the only thing that got me through the night last night.

Overall – a very good visit! No concerns from the doctor – except for the co-sleeping issue – which is more of a “naughty parent” concern. Not to worry. We (ahem..I…) am being super stubborn with her at night now to go down in her own bed. Even at nap time during the day, I try to put her down so she gets used to it.

Is ja super peinlich!”).

Was soll ich also sagen.

Muss man natürlich ändern.

So, I already posted about Madeleine’s umbilical cord stump falling off. What else has happened this week?

She is now holding her head up on her own for extended periods of time. She was able to lift it from the day she was born, but it usually flopped back down right away. Now she can hold it up and look around as I carry her around the house!!

A funny facial development is that she now sticks her tongue out and uses it when she’s making faces at us. Makes me giggle!

She also has been spending more time on her tummy! Her legs are quite strong and she’s got the bottom half of crawling figured out. Now she just needs to get her arms working as well and she’ll be cruisin’ in no time. Also, if I hold her in the standing position in my lap, she will straighten her legs out and push off. Get ready for your Johnny Jumper, baby girl!!

While you wait for me to update with a tummy time post, here’s a picture to tide you over. But first, a disclaimer: no, we are not torturing our child. Sometimes she screams, sometimes she smiles and looks all around lifting and swiveling her head.

She had her first video chat with my parents.

Neener neener neener!

She also had her first outing with just her mommy yesterday. We went to the grocery store and then to her daddy’s work to take him some Dayquil. We then went to lunch with Jo and Aiden, B and D, Jackie and Dana! She’s had so much fun meeting all these new people. Unfortunately she was a tad fussy when it was time for people to hold her, so we had to leave rather quickly and get her home for her lunch.

She has developed a bout of baby acne. Poor baby! But after some googling, this appears to be rather common and showed up right on cue with what the MD websites say it should. What a relief to know it’s normal. I’d been worried!

And on Saturday, she transitioned from her newborn clothes into her 0-3 month clothes. My little girl is growing WAY too fast. Right now she’s just between sizes where the NB clothes are a tad bit short in the sleeves and sometimes the legs. Most of the onesies are too tight though. But the 0-3 month clothes are still just a tad bit big. I can’t believe it’s already been 3 weeks. *cry*
