Manhattan Monologue Slam Los Angeles Champion Daheli Hall, one of four new cast members to be added during Season 13 of “MADtv,” brings with her an already impressive resume. Daheli is a Manhattan Monologue Slam LA Champion and has earned both a Bachelor of Fine Arts from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and a Master of Fine Arts in Producing for Film and TV from the University of Southern California. Even though Daheli’s body of work is rather small thus far–a couple of short films, a documentary, and a one-woman standup comedy show–her creative abilities are far-reaching. In her brief career, Daheli has quickly established herself as an actor, comic, writer, director, and producer. Judging by these already impressive entertainment credentials, one can easily see why “MADtv” is so eager to have Daheli onboard.

Anyone here knows MADtv? It’s Like the best damn show on Earth!!! I just miss all that crazy yet funny sketches of them. Can you believe it.. 14 years and then what… they got canceled. Now we don’t have anything to watch on a Saturday Night. God, I wish they find a new home for the show. All MADtv fans out there, keep on hoping. MADtv still lives. (in our hearts).

FAVE SHOW #1

According to Mobile Marketing.com Hooters achieved a 32% increase in sales from the Text mobile marketing campaign they ran earlier this year.

The project consisted of a 2 stage campaign. In conjunction with Cox Communications, Hooters tagged an on-demand video to their TV advertising. Viewers could access the video which essentially demonstrated how to send a text message in order to join the Hooters mobile club. Whilst I didn’t see the video myself, I imagine it was a very technical demonstration of text messages which engaged the audience through education. Ahem!

Viewers who signed up received an instant coupon for 10 free wings at their local Hooters, as well as future offers from the restaurant chain. All they had to do was show their Hooter Girl on their next visit.

Whilst a TV advertising campaign, interactive or otherwise, may be beyond the realms of affordability for most high street restaurants and small businesses, there are a number of points that we can take from the Hooters SMS Marketing campaign that are simple and affordable to add to your marketing strategy.

1. Clear instructions: Informing your customers how to use your coupon service in clear and simple terms needn’t involve a curvy presenter in a TV studio. Signage should be simple, displaying your code and the number to send it to in clear, bold text. Keep details of what they will receive brief and easy to understand.

Brief your staff to make them aware of the campaign so that they can answer any questions about your text marketing club.

2. Irresistable Offer: I am sure that the sauces accompanying Hooters’ free wings guarantees the sale of at least one if not two or three beverages. The cost to the restaurant is minimal and the chances of bringing a friend are high. We have already discussed in an earlier article how customers perceive ‘Free’ more favorably than ‘Discount’ and are less likely to devalue their regular order with a complimentary side or upgrade.

If the offer is good enough your campaign has a great chance not only of increasing repeat visits by existing customers but also bringing new faces through the door as your coupons pass from phone to phone.

3. Trackability: Text makes tracking your success easy and almost instantaneous. A good text provider will offer basic statistics at no extra cost. Identify your campaigns with a title or code so you can see at a glance how many texts have been sent. This can help you to identify which promotional tools are working hardest for you.

If possible, add your identifiers to your point of sale system so that you can compare how many coupons were redeemed, so you can determine how your customers are viewing the offer they receive.

4 Repeatability: Using your advertising to encourage new participants in your text club means that you can use the results again and again. In other words a result now is a potential repeat sale in the future.

Even without the assets available to your local Hooters restaurant, you can still achieve great things by applying basic principles and utilizing a straightforward text marketing tool. Clear instruction, great offers and traceable results mean that you too could achieve dramatic increases in sales turnover with the smallest of investments.

Boy, was Harry Connick Jr.’s face red.

So on the second and last Hey Hey it’s Saturday reunion special, the “Red Faces” segment included an act called the “Jackson Jive”, as a tribute to the Michael Jackson family, which had five multiracial and multicultural guys with their faces painted black, and an Indian gentleman’s face painted geisha white (you know what that’s for!). But nah-uh, have a cranky yank on the judging panel, and political correctness rears its Dickie Knee in, and all pussies break loose. Aw, did Australian TV hurt peoples’ feelings again?

Personally, I thought the Burpinator and Susan Boyle’s twin sister were more offensive. By the way, did anyone else laugh when Cate Blanchett chucked a tantrum after being gonged back in 1987? Oh, what the great artiste!

Yet, that’s the whole point of “Red Faces”, to show some of the worst, tasteless, yet funniest acts on television so Red Symons can gong them off quicker than Plucka Duck’s keen eye for Suze Raymond can have him on a quack chase, and finally award a deservedly low rating. It never gets old!

I thought Harry kicked arse when he ran out of hot air and his F-18 blew up in Independence Day (1996), but not only is he a hypocrite do-gooder who thinks he’s doing American blacks a favour by standing up for them because he thinks they’re so defenceless, but he also appeared in a MADtv sketch as a Baptist preacher lampooning American blacks and “a’makin’ dem luk leik buffoons”. So what was he complaining about again?

I really hope Hey Hey it’s Saturday is renewed for a full-time broadcast, and I say they should do more skits like this that take the mickey out of everyone just to piss people off.

I love watching them all go… red.

When I first saw this like 15 years ago, I almost died laughing. It’s less bearable as an adult. I am so sorry for slighting MadTV’s writers, who I’m sure are gifted folks, but … um… this show was just never good enough. Just never even at all good enough.

Standpoint

If you’re an avid reader of this blog, and it’s shame if you’re not, you’ve come to the conclusion that I’m an above-average humorous individual. To put it mildly.

And, after reaching  that conclusion, I’m betting you’ve wondered, “Hey. How’d that guy get so goddamn funny? What his secret?” Well, it stems from all kinds of places. I will say that, coming from a family with five other siblings competing for attention at the dinner table, it didn’t take a genius to figure out the the proper execution of well-timed humor earned you a little more time at the podium during the nightly palaver.

But that wasn’t all there was to it. I had my influences. At a young age, I decided every single person in the entertainment business was essentially just borrowing material from somewhere or another, and presenting it as their own original ponderings. But, once in a while, I’d see something that either (a) was borrowing shit from so many different places it did actually became original content, or (b) was original content. Watching anything that fell into one of those categories represented a possibility of, for me at least, a tiny shred of hope the world wasn’t doomed to watch garbage like “Charles In Charge” or “Who’s The Boss?” for the rest of eternity.  

Here are a few things you can watch if you want to see exactly what I’m talking about. (Note: It’s a coincidence that Dave Foley is in two of the three clips here. Or maybe not. He’s a funny motherfucker.) (Another note: I was going to embed the videos but I couldn’t with some so just hit the link.)

Clip One – NewsRadio – “The Cane”

Phil Hartman has my vote as the funniest person ever to put two feet on Earth’s soil. This scene from “NewsRadio” with Dave Foley represents most of the range Hartman possessed. Foley is great, too.

 Clip(s) Two – Kids In The Hall – “King of Empty Promises” and The State – “Porcupine Racetrack”

“Kids In The Hall” is debatably the funniest sketch comedy show of all-time. Other might say it was “The State.” I lean towards the latter, but, really it all depends on my mood. Both were unendingly funny. Both went places similar shows (“SNL” “MADtv”) either weren’t allowed to go or were incapable of. These two sketches helped convinced me there were other like-minded lunatics out there in the world.

Clip Three – Black Books – “Bernard Black Drunk”

This clip from “Black Books” – the British sitcom that aired on the UK’s Channel 4 for three seasons and the US’ Comedy Central for about one hour late some random Sunday night – is representative of the completely hilarious work Dylan Moran and Bill Bailey did on this unfortunately still-unknown classic.

 Sadly, if you don’t find any/all of this funny, there’s only one thing wrong with you. You would fail to recognize humor if it walked up and kneecapped you.

Yesterday, I revealed that I’m a sucker for a song with well-written lyrics. Well, there’s something that can make a song with well-written lyrics even better. And that’s a multi-part harmony. When done the right way, multiple harmonies can turn an ordinary song into an anthem. The multiple harmony song usually starts off kind of slow, but that’s not a requirement. There is one steadfast rule, though, each harmony, and its corresponding lyrics, has to be introduced separately. A byproduct of that is the song can travel all over the rythmic spectrum, producing the effect of several songs contained in one. The result of the crescendo is an overlapping vocal harmony where all the separate vocal sections are woven into each other and the best parts of each accompanying melody are grooved into one. The final minute of such a song should make you want to turn up the volume, roll down the windows and hit the gas pedal. That’s how you know it’s a good one. I have five favorite songs falling into that category. But, I think I’ve decided that “See These Bones” by Nada Surf is the greatest. The best part is when Matthew Caws comes in with “The lights in the city are more or less blinking/Which side of the story decides what you’re thinking.” It’s the beginning of the end. But in a really good way. Listen to it. I’m not wrong. Right?

→ You know what’s a really great thing? When the mayor of one of the largest cities in the country plays chicken with the state legislature using innocent peoples’ jobs as a bargaining chip. That’s what Philadelphia’s mayor, Michael Nutter, did with the jobs of 3,000 municipal workers in an attempt to pry money out of Pennsylvania. It worked. But still. Kind of shitty.
