The N900 has a 5mp camera – 4:3 ratio at 2576×1936. It also takes widescreen 16:9 images at 2576×1488 (3.5MP). Below are some photos I took a couple of days ago on the way to one of my lectures. It was a pretty gloomy/cloudy/rainy day with some brief spots of sunshine.

Just for reference, in this occasion, the automatic white balance looked off on the N97, much cooler than the actual scene which looked more accurate with the N900.

I did have comparison sample with the N97 but I seem to have left that in my room at Cardiff to post it here (I hope so! Otherwise I’m gonna have to phone the insurance people). I can’t go get it as I’m 30 minutes away from London. [I knew I'd leave something important behind].

This means I’m going to be completely reliant on the N900 for music/photo/navigation which is going to be such a strain on the battery. My Proporta Charger is an absolute fail and isn’t charging anything (Apparently their warranty does not cover electrical products).

I do have a spare BP-4L but the N900 takes BL-5J which are completely different sizes.

After some weeks using extras-testing and as the first people have the devices in their hands, one complain I heard is, that the documentation on how to use extras-testing might be not sufficient for some users. This is the reason for this little overview with questions and answers around the testing repository, hoping that this will help and promote the testing activity a bit.

Why testing the applications?
A nice description about the testing-process you can find in the wiki.

Which kind of places are there to get applications and what is the difference?

There exist three different community driven repositories:

• extras:
  This is the place where the end-user can find applications, which are ready and tested.
• extras-testing:
  Here are applications, which might have some issues and should not be for the real end-user usage. Applications you find here are meant to be proofed by experienced users, to ensure their quality or find possible blockers. This could be you, but be aware of possible risks.
• extras-devel:
  Applications you find here are just meant for people who know what they are doing. They can be in pre-alpha status and should not be installed by normal end-users. You should know what you are doing by enabling this repository.

I’m aware of what I’m doing now, but what are the first steps, if I want to test an application?

After creating a backup, add the extras-testing repository. Therefore open the Application Manager and follow these steps:

1. Open the menu and click on “Application Catalogues”

2. Add the extras-testing repository (Web address: http://repository.maemo.org/extras-testing)

3. If you have the  extras-devel repository enabled, disable it with the “Disabled” checkbox to check possible dependency issues:

Now I can start testing, but what to look for?

Besides the obvious problems like battery drain, crashes, performance etc. you can find here a good summary of what you should look at, if you want to test applications.

I have reached an opinion about the application, but how to continue?

1. It is necessary to have an account on maemo.org. If you don’t have already one, you can register here.

2. You find the QA queue of applications, which are in extras-testing here. Find the application you just have tested and vote for it!

I hope this makes the testing-process a bit clearer and activates the people, who are able to help to join the group of testers

It’s crystal clear by now that the Nokia N900 has almost nothing to do with the traditional Nseries values. The full QWERTY side-slider may look similar to its double-digit mates but the Maemo experience is completely different. However, the N900 is not there for the mere sake of difference – a tablet and a phone, it tries to get the best of both worlds. These are worlds though where Nokia feels at home.

The internet tablet genes are strong in the Nokia N900 so connectivity and web-browsing are its greatest virtues. The large high-res display and great typing skills are the right kind of backup but we’ve seen plenty of similar packages already. We told you though – the N900 is different. It’s a Maemo-powered phone with Mozilla browsing and all-you-can-eat connectivity. Call it good news, call it a good start or just call it good. Let’s see if it calls back.

Initially the intention was to give a jist of the size of the N900. But since I was snapping away in phone retail stores, I didn’t get appropriate angle shots so you can see how easy it is to be deceived by comparison photos unless you see them flat, centre and horizontal with comparisons of [layered] length, width and thickness.

www.sizeasy.com/ helps if you want to compare phone sizes and you’ve got their dimension. This of course ignores curves/tapering which assist in the illusion that your device is smaller than what it actually is.

Ignoring size comparisons, the photos below are still worth a look for comparing aesthetics/design.

So in the following pictures, just remember that unless you haven’t seen the N900 before, they might be slightly misleading in making it look bigger than it actually is as these are taken in the angle which make the N900 seem unnaturally bigger.

The TG01 is huge. It looks stupidly big. The N900 can sit on it and there’d be ample toshiba to border it.  This angle makes them look pretty similar in size. They are not.

The only one that’s slightly useful for size comparisons is N900 vs Blackberry Bold. (This is my mate’s Bold, snapped these just as the lecturer was walking in – but still much better to have a flat surface to take comparison shots with)

- I was actually looking for a new SIM and checking if retailers knew when/if they’d be getting the N900. On the way, I took some of these snaps.

This morning WOMWorld kindly sent over the Nokia N900! Much excitement aside, I won’t be writing much in this post; I’ll leave the video and photos to speak for themselves.

After a week of the official release date, the Nokia N900 is finally in stock at NokiaUSA and is available stateside. Bad news for our Canadian friends, as they only accept credit cards with a US billing address, we tried. Now all we can do is wait and hope that Amazon decides to ship us our product, sooner than later

…The Nokia N900 has arrived at my house. Well maybe. I haven’t opened the DHL bag yet and won’t open it until I get home after lectures. I want the first time the N900 box is opened to be on film, ha. It may possibly be that there’s just a box inside, maybe even a mixup and it’s not an N900, heaven forbid! I literally have seconds to go before I have to leave for “Muscle Development in Drosophila melanogaster 2″.

There were lots of talks about the Nokia new platform Maemo and its future, everyone was a bit confused would S60 remain or be taken over by Maemo? Now this confusion is somewhat solved, Nokia would still be coming up with phones using S60 platform but by 2012 switch would be made from S60 to Maemo gradually. It is seen that Maemo is far developed and strong platform compared to S60 and is the one for the future handsets by Nokia. Now we can wait for another phone by Nokia using Maemo, that would surely give an idea way the Nokia is moving ahead.

A quanto pare, Nokia N900 ha riscosso un discreto successo anche nel nostro Paese.

In soli 4 giorni, tutte le scorte che erano arrivate sono esaurite.

E pensate che si tratta soltanto dei dispositivi acquistati online, considerando che nei negozi il terminale non è ancora arrivato.

Zamówienia z przedsprzedaży zaczynają być realizowane. Status w sklepie Nokii został zmieniony. W sklepach już pojawiły się listy kolejkowe i zapisy na N900 z pierwszej partii. Wygląda to spokojniej niż w przypadku iPhona jednak należy pamiętać iż Apple sprzedawało na początku swój telefon przez operatorów sieci komórkowych, Nokia najpierw przez sklep internetowy (sklep Skype też ma N900 w swojej ofercie) i sklepy firmowe. Jak na razie nic nie wiem o tym żeby pojawił się w ofercie któregoś z operatorów (mówię o PL).

Mamy też bonusik dla mieszkańców Wrocławia i okolic. mianowicie jeśli jeszcze nie mieliście okazji z N900 to w sklepie firmowym we centrum handlowym Renoma znajduje się N00 (czyli przed produkcyjna wersja N900). Może uda wam się namówić obsługę na

The most significant difference and advantage over previous generation tablets of the manufacturer is the presence of GSM module that allows phone calls over cellular networks. Questo pomeriggio, grazie alla preziosa collaborazione di un amico “infiltrato”, ho avuto modo di avere tra le mani il nuovissimo Nokia N900.

Premetto subito che il terminale era spento e non ho potuto scattare immagini di nessun tipo, per cui mi limiterò a riferirvi le mie impressioni riguardanti la parte estetica.

Prima di tutto, affrontiamo il discorso dimensioni.

Una delle cose che mi convincevano meno di questo smartphone riguardava proprio la sua altezza, che, nelle immagini viste in rete, mi sembrava infinita.

Invece, una volta giunto nelle mie mani, sembrava quasi sottile. Nonostante, in effetti, N900 sia più alto rispetto ad altri terminali, non è assolutamente scomodo da tenere in mano o in tasca. Ovviamente se abbiamo dei jeans molto stretti o i pantaloni eleganti il “giocattolino” si sentirà, ma molto meno di quanto avessi immaginato in precedenza.

Confrontato con iPhone, è un pò più alto, poco più di mezzo centimetro (a occhio), mentre a fianco di un Omnia HD è spesso solo pochi millimetri in più.

Per quanto riguarda la “facciata”, è poco più piccola di iPhone e molto più corta di Omnia HD. Anche rispetto ad N97 è molto più corto come terminale.

Il meccanismo di slide sembra ben costruito e dovrebbe resistere anche ad un uso intenso.

La tastiera è piccola e bisogna abituarsi ad utilizzarla, ma credo che non ci voglia molto tempo. Io sono abituato ad usare iPhone e subito era davvero scomodissima, ma con un pò di pratica credo che tutti possano riuscire ad usarla. I tasti non sono molto distanziati tra loro e sono, forse, pò piccoli, ma anche qui basta un pò di abitudine.

Infine, il peso. 180gr si fanno sentire effettivamente, ma pensavo peggio. Il telefono in tasca si sente, inutile negarlo, ma non è quel mattone che immaginavo.

Mi spiace non averlo potuto accendere, in quanto mi sono perso la maggior parte delle novità di questo Maemo 5, ma spero di poterlo testare più a fondo in un futuro non troppo lontano.

Per il momento, dunque, posso solo ritenermi soddisfatto di questo smartphone. Nonostante l’apparenza, è piccolo e compatto, comodo da maneggiare e ben costruito.

At the onedotzero event, I remember trying to get the N900 to crash with low memory errors or slow down. I couldn’t.

MySymbian proves this in the video below where the N900 is pushed to multitask all available apps. Where most others would have frozen, crashed or killed other applications to open a new one, the N900 juggles one new app after another without breaking into a sweat.

Whilst on the move, being able to handle several tasks simultaneously and quickly switch to the application at hand should be part definition of Smartphone.

Many smartphones can multitask – but they have a limit (and application switcher interface could be improved!*). Though you can be on guard and stick to the limit, sometimes you inadvertendly exceed that which will lead to problems of crashing, apps unintentionally closing and freezing.

The N900 bears this burden.

This would have been reason alone for me to get a N900 were I not trapped in another contract. Le Sigh.

I am however, concerned how much this multitasking will affect battery life (particularly as multitask apps are actively doing something, e.g. pulling data, accessing on board memory which is using power). Nevertheless, for me, battery life concerns are far outweighed by the advantages of multitasking without worrying too much that the phone won’t handle it and crash.

*N900 doesn’t just have static thumbnails or a set size window size or worse or just icons – it has dynamic live windows that alter in size the more windows you multitask – max  16 live windows viewable at one time. No guessing what application is which by their icon (especially if you have multiple browser windows open), no flicking through endlessly through big fat window/thumbnail representations alone.

Nokia N900 è sicuramente un terminale che fa del multitasking il suo punto di forza.

Che il device fosse in grado di avviare tante applicazioni contemporaneamente era cosa nota da tempo, ma guardate il filmato seguente.

N900 riesce a gestire senza problemi la bellezza di 28 applicazioni avviate tutte insieme.

Il bello è che lo smartphone, nonostante tutte le risorse richieste dalle applicazioni, riesce ancora a funzionare alla grande e solo in un paio di casi abbiamo qualche piccolo rallentamento.

N900 è davvero impressionante: Nokia ha fatto un ottimo lavoro con questo dispositivo, che cui uniche pecche, a mio avviso, sono le dimensioni e il display resistivo.

Per il resto, direi che N900 sia uno dei migliori smartphone mai prodotti dalla casa finlandese, e non solo.
