I have an unexpected afternoon off because I cannot stop hacking up a lung onto my desk every 10 minutes. Which makes it difficult to push the buttons on my scanner. My manager asked me if I had any ancestors who were Marines, since I seemed so determined to stay at my task.

I’ve been re-watching the British version of The Office. I just love that show. So subtle and complex…the American version spells everything out these days.

And today’s Magic Moment comes from the Christmas special. Dawn unwraps the set of oil paints from Tim and realizes what he means to her.

(Dawn and Lee are so tan in this episode..of course the storyline has had them living in Florida for the last two years — but I wonder if the producers sent them to get spray tanned?)

Here is a true story that happened to me, and which taught me the importance of magic moments in life and of making genuine, friendly connections with strangers or people you meet for a few seconds each day – in this case a Starbucks coffee shop counter server.

I was staying at the JW Marriot Hotel outside Orlando, Florida, where I was attending Tony Robbins’ Date With Destiny seminar. Now strange things can happen at Tony Robbins events, but I still had a little bit of scepticism after he had told the 3,000 or so attendees to expect something unusual to happen at 8.07 a.m. the following day.

The next day – the final one of the six-day event – and shortly before 8 a.m. I took the elevator to the lobby and made my way to the Starbucks outlet inside the hotel.

Unlike on previous days when I arrived freshly showered and neatly dressed, on this day I was unshaven, had messy hair and did not have my name tag around my neck. Why? Well, there were still quite a few hours to go before the start of the seminar’s final session and I figured I’d wait to shower and dress properly once my washing was finished in the hotel launderette on the third floor.

Unkempt and without any identity tag, that was me. So how did the Starbucks server ‘Leigh’ recognise me and address me by name? Not only that, she even remembered what my usual coffee order was.

During the week thousands of delegates had used that small coffee shop every day. I visited once each morning. Yet here was the counter server remembering me on sight, by name, after only a few days and addressing me like an old friend. On all the other days when I had been wearing my name tag I had not been addressed by name as far as I could remember.

I was taken aback. Now, you’re going to have to take my word here, but I swear that this is true. The exchange at the Starbucks counter happened at 8.07 a.m.

How had Tony Robbins been able to predict that a magic moment that would happen at 8.07 a.m.? Perhaps because my mind was unconsciously on the lookout for something to happen at that precise moment in time my senses were fully alert taking in every single thing that was happening around me.

Whatever it was, this was my magic moment.

I chatted briefly with ‘Leigh’ and took a mental note of her name tag for the first time, that is why I can remember her now as I write, and why I returned the compliment and addressed her by name the following day before I departed.

In an unexpected but quite beautiful way I had been taught the power of making a connection with a stranger – a real, genuine connection, addressing them by name and showing that they matter in your life enough to acknowledge them in a friendly and direct manner.

Look out for those magic moments in your own life, and learn the name of the person who serves you coffee in the morning, or drives your bus to work, and use it to make that magic moment connection.

So, still unemployed. Not for lack of trying, though — I’ve canvased the town restaurants and bars with my resume, so the hope is that something will open up before money runs out. Amy got a job at a photo company called Elevation Imaging, so she’ll be taking pictures of riders on the mountain this winter. A free season pass comes with the deal, so that’s a killer gig to be in on. Hope the job itself doesn’t suck. :S

But hey, a job is a job — especially in this town. I’m still on the lookout, hoping the dice will fall in my favor one of these times. Speaking of dice, they do this thing out here at bars where people enter to win an ongoing lottery that’s overseen by random local bar staffs. Bars that hold these kinds of lotteries charge a dollar to roll 5 dice, the object of which is to get a roll where each one lands on the same number. You’re only allowed one roll a day, unless you roll 3 or 4 of a kind, in which case you can *pay* another dollar to roll again. The bar I was at had an over $2000 dollar pot going, so maybe I should kick the job search to the curb and learn to rig dice games! At this rate, I’m not totally sure which would pay off sooner.

Changing the subject, last night Amy and I went to a movie premiere out here: Magic Moments, by .. no idea who, a local film crew. The event organization was more or less total shit, compounded by the fact that the most idiotic girl was in charge of the on-screen raffle ticket winner typing. They had a projector playing the desktop of a computer and the girl controlling it was typing the numbers as they were drawn in Word or something. Anyways, she kept writing random messages about people around the room, and basically every third word was misspelled, which might annoy me more than most people, but I think pretty much everyone was sick of that shit. The movie itself was awesome though. Really awesome.

Afterward we went across town to a pub and played some pool.

Today (that is, just a few hours ago) we went on a walk around town — what else do people with no money do? I took a few photos of some icicles hanging off of some trees. It was a weird sight, because there weren’t any similar icicles around on other trees. From what we deduced, they were formed when melting snow on the roof dripped off and cool rapidly in the air, so when it hit the tree it was ready to freeze again. I suppose I should mention it’s like 14 degrees outside (at least in the shade).

- Certo, capisco.

- No.

– (risoluto) Lei è ebreo.

– Ohibò, mica sarà ateo!
- Ma si figuri, essere ateo è fuori da ogni logica! Non è razionale! E poi sappiamo di che cosa è capace l’ateismo: persino di erigere un muro… A Berlino, per esempio.
– Eh, lo sappiamo, sì. Ma, allora, lei cos’è?
- (allungandosi per sbirciare il foglio) Mi permetta: non c’è, come nelle indagini di marketing, la casella “altro”?
– No, non ce l’hanno messa.
- Beh, lo può sempre scrivere sotto, nello spazio bianco.
– Sì, possiamo fare così. Dunque, lei è…
- Pastafariano.
– (incomincia a scrivere) Pa-st-a… (come svegliandosi di colpo) Pa-pasta…che?!?!?
- Pastafariano. “Pasta” come pastasciutta, “fa” come fa: ha presente la nota dopo il mi e prima del sol?, “riano” come “ariano” ma senza la “a”; oppure, se preferisce, “riano” come “ano” con prefisso iterativo. Come abbiamo già avuto modo di accennare (v. rc KFJ0010-OO-II), tra gli abitanti del pianeta in oggetto, gli umani, è molto diffuso il cosiddetto pensiero magico.
Il pensiero magico – riassumiamo – consiste nell’idea che determinate azioni o determinati pensieri siano in grado di influenzare gli eventi, pur in assenza di qualsiasi nesso causale (dimostrato o dimostrabile) tra l’azione e il pensiero stessi e l’oggetto a cui si rivolgono.
Una delle manifestazioni di pensiero magico che più frequentemente possiamo osservare nella vita quotidiana degli umani, è l’usanza di dotare di piccoli oggetti di svariata natura i mezzi di locomozione, al fine di evitare incidenti o di essere protetti nel caso in cui essi si verifichino. Questi oggetti, detti amuleti o santini, vengono applicati con adesivi, corde e catenelle, spesso in maniera plateale, all’interno dell’abitacolo e sono rivolti, a seconda del modello, alla dea Fortuna o ad altre e diverse divinità. Una delle divinità più invocate si chiama Arbre Magique.

Perché possiate tutti provare le sensazioni che ho provato io quando l’ho sentita la prima volta, pubblico la testimonianza – per una questione di privacy, uso iniziali di fantasia – di F.B.I.:

«Ero a casa, una sera, disperato. Il mondo mi stava crollando addosso. Io, ateo da sempre, non sapevo dove trovare la forza per reagire. Interessante: in questi giorni – cioè da quando ho incominciato a smanettare con WordPress – ho sentito meno la necessità di abbandonarmi all’autoerotismo.
