Bailey Island, ME. June 20, 2009. Scar Across the earth across my hands open, old, and deep a forgot

Bailey Island, ME. June 20, 2009.

Scar

Across the earth across
my hands
open, old, and deep
a forgotten time

once there were fresh buds bursting forth
once this wound was not a wound,
but a beginning
a birth and becoming

and now the pebbles scatter, freckles across
boulders shaken to the core
can I break through their dark solidness?
through the scar?

beneath,
where I dare not go
where the rawness remains
anxiety, newness

the opening of eyes, rimmed with phlegm and trickling tears
an infant
the child of the universe
was this me? it wasn’t, was it?

because here I am, kneeling in dust, fingers curled over the edge
of the earth
peering into depths so dark
my eyes fail

to open this past, I need to feel,
to reach my hands down and in,
and touch the warmth
the magma singeing the center

still I hover at the edge
of the scar

Hulu’s massive traffic bump courtesy of ABC’s refreshed inventory of their fall line-up

Hulu’s massive traffic bump courtesy of ABC’s refreshed inventory of their fall line-up proves without a doubt that online is the second screen for people who love their TV shows. As long as online content remains free, DVR usage will erode.

The funny thing is, people go online to watch something they already know about; they’re catching up on missed episodes of their favorite TV shows. And the majority of people learn about new shows by – you guessed it – watching TV! Usually those tune-in promos that are related demographically to the show you’re watching (aka commercials). But since the spots are for related TV shows while you’re watching TV, they’re much more relevant to the viewer and much more likely to be watched than the run-of-the-mill paid ad.

So what’s the biggest obstacle for producers of online content to be successful? An easy way to discover content. Yes, there are certainly lots of content search engines that dump search results, or content aggregators that either provide on-site content viewing or links (the better way not to get sued). But by far, they provide the standard, compartmentalized UI with the most popular content on top followed by the usual list of genres and/or sources. Not a good way to discover content. It’s just too painful. They need to make the experience as frictionless as possible or people like me will just bail.

Tubemogul conducted research that showed that most people went directly to a specific video site (e.g. Youtube) and looked around, or came from a search link which means they were looking for a specific title.

Here are a few of the discovery-focused sites that I’ve come across:

Clicker.com – limited titles and common UI.

Mag.ma - clean layout, includes most popular content from sources that I’m interested in like twitter, TED, and digg. Includes recommended content from their staff, most active users, and a most viral display. You have a pretty darn good chance of finding something interesting to watch. Their screenshot of what they want to become looks really robust so good job.

Stumblevideo.com – so far, I like this one the best. They just start showing stuff so it’s easy to give an immediate thumbs up or thumbs down (or not). The subsequent videos are really quite on target and I found myself watching stuff that I know I never would have found otherwise. Really, really easy. The Pandora of videos.

Rippol.com – a highfalutin algorithm that includes the thumbs up/down. The breadth of sources is strong (news, TV, movies, academia) but I’m presented with images of shows and have to start digging from there – too slow and painful. I can see who else liked a show but since I don’t know anyone there (yet), not relevant to me.

ovguide.com – ouch, not for me. Trashy layout.

What do you want in a content discovery site?

Some miscellaneous notes about the concept of form, which I sketched (ahem) in a series of posts TD

Some miscellaneous notes about the concept of form, which I sketched (ahem) in a series of posts TDMO1, TDMO2, TDMO3, TDMO4, TDMO5, TDMO6, TDMO7, TDMO8 and TDMO9. This series builds up to an explanation of the concept of form in the paper Graph-Based Logic and Sketches by Atish Bagchi and me. I am now embarking on a series of posts with further explanations and comments.

More about a model of a form

For any constructor space (which will be the sketch for a kind of category, a special case of a doctrine), take any object in the FL Cattheory of and adjoin a new arrow where 1 is the terminal object. is what we call a C-form and the enhanced category is denoted by . In TDMO9 I described the node for reflexive function spaces in a cartesian closed category; it is an example of a CCC-form.

A model of a -form “in a C-category ” means that is a model of . In particular, in , is nonempty.

The connection with sketches is this: If you have a sketch in some doctrine , the sketch consists of a graph with some diagrams, cones and cocones. There is a node in the FL Cattheory of each of whose elements in a model of (in other words in a -category) will be such a sketch.

Example: The FP sketch for magmas

A magma is a set with a binary operation defined on it (Note 1). It does not have to be associative or commutative or anything. In the FP doctrine its sketch consists of one diagram

(Diagram1)

and one cone

(Cone1)

and nothing else. The FP-Cattheory for this sketch is (equivalent to) the Lawvere theory of magmas.

The FL-Cattheory for FP categories, described in some detail in TDMO8, contains a node whose inhabitants in any model of (in other words in any FP-category) are all such sketches (the diagram and the cone). This means that the FP sketch for magmas corresponds to an FP-form. In this way you can see that all sketches in Ehresmann’s sense are forms in my sense.

This node can be constructed as the limit of a cone over a diagram in as was done in previous posts. You have to make the diagram become a description of the diagram and cone above, using the arrows in the constructor space , for example , , and others, and including formally commutative diagrams that say for example that Cone1’s projections go to the same object (using and ). Maybe someday I will produce this diagram in a post but right now I have a cold. (Excuses, excuses…)

Adjoining a global element to this limit node will result in an FL-sketch which contains the FL-Cattheory for along with that global element.

So a model of the form for magmas in an FP category is a model of for which the model of the underlying cattheory is ; in other words it is the category with a distinguished element f of the node . That distinguished element is a particular diagram and cone like the ones shown above for a particular object (because the projections onto include a particular projection to ). That object with the arrows corresponding to and is a particular magma, a model of the sketch for magmas given above.

Notes

Note 1 “Magma” was the term used by Bourbaki for this structure. As far as I know, very few people ever used the word until it was published in [1]. When I was a grad student in 1962-65 it was called a “groupoid”, which means something else now (something much more important than a magma in my opinion). Now the name occurs in examples all over Wikipedia.

A few quickies. First, the new issue of Sphinx is out. I always recommend this magazine and it looks

A few quickies. First, the new issue of Sphinx is out. I always recommend this magazine and it looks particularly good this time round. It begins with a terrific interview with Tony Frazer, editor of Shearsman Press.

Secondly, check out this fun, free-to-enter competition at the Magma blog, in which you choose a poem to ban from the school syllabus and say why in less than 300 words. The winner gets a poetry anthology and an annual subscription to Magma – so well worth entering.

Thirdly, all UK orders of Salt books before Christmas will be sent with free postage. If you want to surprise your friends and relatives, I’d guess my book would be among the more unpredictable gifts of the year. Anything called The Opposite of Cabbage is the last thing most people would expect to receive – but none the worse for that. I’d also recommend recent Salt collections by Tony Williams (The Corner of Arundel Lane and Charles Street) and Liz Gallagher (The Wrong Miracle), which I plan to say something about on this blog if I have the time. Of course, there’s also Emily Benet’s Shop Girl Diaries, even if we male types might pretend we don’t read the Christmas book we buy for the women in our lives.

Readers from other countries, don’t despair. The Book Depository will also send Salt books with free postage, although my book appears to be out of stock at the time of writing this…

So this morning (More like; a week or two ago. This post has been sitting in my drafts forever.) I

So this morning (More like; a week or two ago. This post has been sitting in my drafts forever.) I finally got a couple viewers. In seeing this, I decided to give those who are reading my blog a little insight to the book. Something I have been avoiding since the beginning of my blog. But it is high time to fulfill my promise. Then I just might get a couple more viewers, and maybe a link or two. Wherein I will actually be fine with this, in seeing the fact that I will actually have a post describing my main purpose.

So all in all, I am hoping to eventually be named “The next J.K. Rowling.”

A couple things I like in books, is the mere fact that it is entirely possible that this is going on right now. Harry Potter for instance, I believe was such a hit because it is so well planned, that the entire story could be real.

This sounds weird, I know. But the wizards in harry potter cover their existence so nobody knows they exist, and they do a pretty good job of it. Meaning, if there really were wizards, and they really were trying to hide their existence, we would have no clue whatsoever.

Also meaning; the book could be completely true, and we would never know.

On that confusing note, (I’ve never done a good job at explaining exactly how I think. My mind is kinda like; “OH! An idea! Yeah! Harry Potter… True… Possible! Mind-erasing! Charms… Works!” And then I have this long list of my thoughts that are entirely illegible and undecipherable.[And on a more confusing note! {Maybe I should split this post in two...}]) this is one trait I am planning to have in my book. Although, this attribute might be lost in series three…

And onto the books themselves! I am planning on writing a couple of series; four to be exact. (Not including the few singles I might publish before and after…) All of them relating to each-other.

Series one; Life of color. Set in 2042 on Dwur U ir Z.

Series two; (Name still being thought over) Territorial War. Set in 968 on Dwur U ir Z.

Series three; Pyromaniacs. Set in 2012 on Earth. ending on year 11 on Dwur U ir Z.

Series Four; Aftermath. Set in 2186 on Dwur U ir Z. Ending on year 2112 on Earth.

Now I’ll bet all of you are wondering; “What in the world is Dwur U ir Z?” With the smarter people saying; “How can two-thousand years pass on Dwur U ir Z but ending up only a hundred or so years later?” With the Einsteins out there; “Wow, they went pretty far.”

Dwur U ir Z is a planet, confined within a dot infinitely small, trapped in time.

I think i’ve spoiled enough. But I’ll give you a little insight to the first book; Zedek Eleveta is a teenage boy living in Scur, Zuir. With his blood red hair, he finds a power beyond his comprehensibility. Forging a lance to keep himself defended, he finds two tragic deaths before him. How will he fight, when an army is running at you full force? The answer?; Nothing.

That’ll keep you thinking until I can think of something better to say on the matter. But for right now, I just want to get this published.

I just got my Magma Poetry Newsletter by email today. I’d recommend signing up for this, wherever you are in the world. It’s free and means only one email every two months. It’s very good stuff: this one has an article on reading poetry to an audience by Roberta James, a summary of what’s on offer in Magma 45, short reviews (not in the print magazine) by Andrew Neilson on the Faber New Poets Pamphlets, and by Matt Merritt on George Szirtes’s The Burning of the Books and other poems, and a critique by Laurie Smith of the first poem to be chosen for the Subscribers’ Workshop – it shows how an editor might look at a poem you’ve submitted, why he might accept or reject it, what he’s looking for etc. All very interesting!

I’ve only had time to read some of the prose so far. Got to say, Jacob Polley’s piece on Poetry and Prose is excellent (in print only, not online) – a very thoughtful and intelligent angle on a subject that often yields little insight. I have three reviews in it – of recent collections by Roddy Lumsden, CL Dallat and Angela Kirby – and these are online and in print, as is Tim Turnbull’s fascinating article on the poetic legacy of the music hall.

The Copenhagen Conference is definitely going to be more meaningful with a thorough discussion of is

The Copenhagen Conference is definitely going to be more meaningful with a thorough discussion of issues aside from carbon emissions future. Certainly, emissions is vital to the phenomenon of the depletion of the ozone layer as tackled succinctly under the Kyoto Protocol. There are also areas that United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the UN Climate Change Secretariat can look into. Aside from state industrial complexes reducing collective emission levels, there is also mitigating the effect of natural emissions like volcanic sulfur compounds that deplete the ozone. This is apart from other substances emitted by volcanoes in the throes of an explosion.

Undeniably, this and other similar events cannot but be factored into the deterioration of the ozone since sulfur compounds become hazardous to the ozone. NASA scientists say that the sulfuric acid clouds formed therefrom, make the nitric acid and water stratospheric clouds possess more destructive power.

Science had never been far from warning about the effects of future volcanic eruptions. While it is easily obtainable knowledge, nothing was done after the Mt. Pinatubo eruption in June 1991 for instance that at the very least estimate:

ejected 10 billion metric tons (10 cubic kilometers) of magma, 20 million tons of SO2, bringing vast quantities of minerals and metals to the surface environment. It injected large amounts of aerosols into the stratosphere—more than any eruption since that of Krakatoa in 1883. Over the following months, the aerosols formed a global layer of sulfuric acidhaze. Global temperatures dropped by about 0.5 °C (0.9 °F), and ozone depletion temporarily increased substantially.

Too many free radical catalysts endanger the ozone by the operation of catalysis of chain reactions. Carbon emissions, although they consist one of the broadest threats to the ozone, are by far only among many of the ways to by which bigger and bigger holes are punched in the ozone layer.

Suffice it to say, there is no more need to encourage separate standing conferences for other ozone depleting materials. Only that, the UNFCCC can do the brotherhood of nations a favor by including these in the Agenda.

In the Philippines, outside of the pernicious effects to the ozone, the destructive effects of natural emissions have been pointed out and appropriate solutions were proposed. However, as the world now knows, very little was done to re-arrange the massively changed landscape in the immediate and even relatively distant surroundings of Mt. Pinatubo that were severely affected by the eruption in 1991. Some scientists even go as far as to claim that there is no danger to areas south of the volcano as the natural tendency of the magma, lahar and future surface run off water flows to the north instead.

If the government in Manila as well as the United Nations itself are becoming more proactive as a result of great losses and the many teetering on survival during the wake of Typhoon Ketsana (Ondoy), Parma (Pepeng) and other typhoons, it should be possible for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the entire United Nations not to be remiss in factoring in the significant role of natural emissions to ozone depletion and re-arranging of entire landscapes into destructive habitats or highly unsuitable sites for agriculture, aquaculture or forestry, other similar activities.

The Copenhagen Conference will have its hands full this December 2009, but then there is still the 2010 Geo Hazard Mapping and Environment Summit as well as other important conventions that can take up some of the Agenda that cannot be taken up in Denmark.

I ran across the Quiksilver Cypher PS+ Heated Vest while reading about it in a Surfline article. It seems awesome! Basically, it is what it sounds like, a heated vest. Unfortunately they don’t harvest the power of magma to heat it, but it’s still a great idea. This isn’t the first heated suit idea, Ripcurl’s been doing it with their H Bomb wetsuit, and there’s other companies that are doing it too. The Cypher vest heats to a crazy temperature on high (130 degrees)!

It’s fairly cheap too, only $200. But I found a 6/5/4 for the same price from Billabong. With the suit at least all of your limbs will stay pretty warm, I don’t think you’d survive in a 3/2 with the vest on. I’m really tempted to buy it though. It seems like it’d be Shangri-La in the wetsuit with that vest.

I found this book while using one of my very few spare minutes to browse Magma bookshop, one of the better design book stores. Matthew Frederick here has presented 101 principles in Architecture in plain english rather than the rather confusing language often used by lecturers, tutors and professionals. With all bases covered from presentation tips to model massing it should be the first thing Architecture students should read before starting the long haul of 7 years of academia, as well a a good refresher for Architects at all levels.

As I have stated in my last post. I am looking to be a writer. I have spent the last year planning how the books are going to be written, what is to happen, for what reasons, and who does what. I have also planned out how many books and series I am planning on writing.

I also have another thing in mind for the future. To make movies and video games out of these books. I have actually planned out a number of my books to work quite well in video-game form.

The reason I wish to create movies from these books is to give a more clear image out of everything that is to happen. It is quite difficult to explain exactly how a flame moves, without making the reader feel like days have gone by in the book itself. I have never liked drawn-out descriptions, but they are quite needed. I like movies, because it can cut these descriptions down to mere seconds. Movies can also give the viewer a more clear view of confusion. Sometimes a writer wishes to make the reader feel confused about the many things that are happening very quickly. But if the reader merely rereads the section two or three times, it destroys the effect. Sometimes in order to make the reader confused, a writer must go outside his writing style in order to achieve this. A movie can merely use sounds and speed to make a viewer confused, and most people wouldn’t find the remote and hit rewind just to get a clearer picture of what is happening.

All in all, I wish to publish. What on, I will talk about at a later time. Until then, for my one reader at this moment in time, Continue reading.

An opinion survey ordered by the Swedish-speaking think tank ‘Magma’ has concluded that

An opinion survey ordered by the Swedish-speaking think tank ‘Magma’ has concluded that Swedish-speaking Finns are significantly more positive in their attitudes towards immigration than the Finnish-speaking population.

In January 2009, around 40% of Finnish-speakers questioned in an opinion poll answered that they had the same or partly the same opinion on the statement “an increase in the number of foreigners brings with it useful international influences”. When Magma’s survey asked Swedish-speakers the same question in September this year, 75% of respondents gave this answer.

It is interesting to speculate why Swedish-speakers are, on average, more positive towards immigrant groups. One theory is that Swedish-speakers, as a minority group, find it easier to empathise with other people who find themselves in a similar minority situation. After all, many Swedish-speakers have to make compromises when it comes to their language and habits in order to live their life in an increasingly Finnish-language dominated environment. This experience may cause Swedish-speakers to be more sympathetic towards the demands that ‘trying to fit in’ brings for immigrants. Some people also argue that the average Swedish-speaker is, on average, more international in his or her outlook than the the average Finnish-speaker. Swedish-speakers have often nurtured contacts with the outside world, especially the other Nordic countries, with a greater vivacity. Another argument is that there is a greater degree of community involvement amongst Swedish-speakers who have a more developed “association culture”. This may foster a greater degree of what is known in Swedish as medmänsklighet, roughly “solidarity with your fellow man” or “brotherliness”, amongst those living in Svenskfinland. Of course, all such theories come with their controversies, the stark difference in attitudes is, whatever the reason for them, highly interesting.

Stefan Wallinin - omintakeisella tavallaan – luotsaama Rkp ei antanut SPT:n toimittajan Maria Gestrin-Hagnerin osallistua puolueen Kemiönsaaressa tiistaina pitämän tulevaisuuskokouksen lehdistötilaisuuteen. Syynä on puolueen närkästyminen hänen viimeviikkoisesta jutustaan, jossa etukäteen arvosteltiin kokouksen ohjelmaa.

Näennäisestä suvaitsevaisuudestaan huolimatta, RKP on paljastunut todelliseksi rasismin pesäksi. Suomenruotsalaisten suhtautuminen maahanmuuttajiin ja ulkomaalaisiin on paljastunut heidän itsensä tekemässä tutkimuksessa ristiriitaiseksi.

Suomenruotsalaiset kertovat itse suhtautuvansa valtaväestöä myönteisemmin työperäiseen maahanmuuttoon ja ulkomaalaisiin. Ero käy ilmi kahdesta tänä vuonna tehdystä asennetutkimuksesta.

Kieliryhmien ero on suurin kannassa ulkomaalaisten maahanmuuttoon.

Wallin on agendoineen huolestuttava tapaus Suomen politiikassa.
