Ken Davis told a fun story on Lighten Up today:

“A teacher gave her class of second-graders a lesson about the magnet and what it does. The next day, in a written test, she included this question: “My name has six letters. The first one is m. I am strong and attractive. I pick up things. What am I?” When the test papers were turned in, the teacher was astonished to find that almost 50 percent of the students answered the question with the word mother.”

I know Mother’s Day doesn’t show up on the calendar anytime soon, but moms should be honored daily. After all, mom does so much more than just pick up things. So, children, rise up and call her blessed! Husbands, you also praise her!

God bless you, moms!

One of the things I got done last week was to create a series of product using my photo, Forest Sun Rays in the Snow #32. A snow covered branch creates an arch, with ferns hanging from its moss covered bark, across a tree lined path toward the summit of this hill in the woods of Rainier Oregon. Beyond the forest the sky shines crystal blue in the early morning light.

En låt som innehåller raderna: ”It’s time to retire, it’s time now to let go. ‘Cause I don’t think I can do this no more, no I don’t think I can do this no more. So I guess that it’s over”.

It’s time to retire, it’s time now to let go. ‘Cause I don’t think I can do this no more, no I don’t think I can do this no more. So I guess that it’s over” känns som ganska stor.

This first one was for Kristin and Dave… actually the very first Save the Date I designed! Unfortunately since that time I have had a computer melt-down and no longer have the actual file… so I had to take a photo. But I think you will get the idea.

And here is one for Sarai and Nick. (Stay tuned… I will be posting some more things we did for Sarai and Nick’s awesome Halloween wedding!)

It’s probably the end of an era.. but as sad by the crew: “It’s the end of an era, but the era is no longer up2date. We have put a server in a museum already, and now the tracking can be put there as well.”

They decided to move to a more reliable standard based on a system of handling tracking (DHT+PEX) and distributions of torrent files (Magnet Links) which is less vulnerable to downtime and outages.

My friend Kim at NewlyWoodwards is hosting a DIY blog party and today’s the first day!

The Mission for Monday, Nov. 16: Dare to… be thankful!

Take some time making your own DIY Thanksgiving project. It could be a fun Thanksgiving advent calendar, a banner or something completely unique. Post about what you made, how you made it and photos in its new home.

Here’s the thing about most Thanksgiving craft projects… gingham & fake flowers are not really my style. Of course there are exceptions to every rule, I think Dorothy totally rocked the blue gingham and fake flowers are a must for any theatrical production {real ones are a total no-no}. Also, our home is not big enough for crap that just sits there and I loathe dusting. Knick-knacks, bric-a-brack, doo-hickeys and other assorted thingamabobs are welcome to live elsewhere. So what’s a girl to make?

Remember how Rob & Dad A unceremoniously ripped the zip-tie-errific fence down to put in the lovely brand-y new recycled composite fence?

Seeing it cast aside, destined for a landfill made me a little sad. Obviously it couldn’t be a fence anymore but maybe it could be something else.

Thinking about Kim’s challenge, I had an idea. I percolated; how would it be made, what supplies do I need {can I do it for free}?

Being thankful isn’t a sentiment that should be reserved for one holiday a year. And it’s not about turkeys, leaves, pumpkins, or stuffing yourself silly.

We should be thankful everyday. Grateful for our family and friends. A reminder to be happy and content with what we have and significantly less concerned with what else we want.

It’s about memories; making & remembering. It’s about relationships; nurturing, repairing, & enjoying the bonds we share with family and friends.

I wanted something that would be displayed year-round as a reminder and came up with this.

This photo display is made completely out of our old fence.

A symbol that something beautiful & useful can be made from something once neglected & discarded.

Subtly burned into the wood at the bottom of the frame are the words:

“give thanks with a grateful heart”

This comes from a song we used to sing at my childhood church but I think it’s a wise sentiment to remember no matter what your religious perspectives, no matter what time of year.

I plan to use it to display things we are thankful for; pictures of family & friends the most likely candidates but I’m not limiting it to anything in particular. Once we get some walls painted, it will hang in our home. For Thanksgiving, it will reside with my parents.

{that’s my mom sitting on my Gram’s lap}

In the coming days, I’ll post a “How To” to show everyone how exactly I made it. It wasn’t hard but involved enough to necessitate a separate post.

My DIY bulldog pins are also pretty fun and super easy to make. I love that they stick into the wood but don’t harm the picture. Rearranging is incredibly easy!

PREVIEW: STREAM “Lay Lady Lay” by Bob Dylan

We all know “Lay Lady Lay” is a classic, and you can never beat the original, however Magnet and Gemma Hayes did a pretty descent job covering one of Bob Dylan’s biggest US hits from way back in ‘69.

Lay Lady Lay has been covered in official album releases from 26 different artists. Basically everyone from The Byrds, Duran Duran, Everly Brothers and Buddy Guy to Cher. Yes, Cher has reinterpreted the release. Magnet and Hayes give an already melodic piece a lighter more appealing tonality. While in its first release by Dylan on Nashville Skyline, the song got the crowd’s attention because it was viewed to be so much smoother and softer in comparison to the rest of his work, Magnet and Hayes’s take on it sounds like pop lullaby.

A valiant attempt on the duo’s part, we dare call it the best cover of the Dylan classic to date. (And yes we listened to all 26 of them)

3. Verbersserungsmaßnahme : Einbringung der Einbauten

Folgende Komponenten finden jetzt Platz :

It’s basically made from four pieces of card, some wooden blocks, two wooden sticks, magnets and little wooden people.

I used to love it so much and make up stories of how the King and Queen ran around the field all day in their Kingdom

I think I could easily make my own.
Maybe a ghetto one.
There would be a gangster, a pimp, a tramp and a hooker. The background is an alley filled with bins and graffiti and a purple lowrider.
Maybe an ASBO one.
There would be three hoodies and a granny. I would make the hoodies chase the granny.
Maybe a supermarket one.
There would be three horrid members of the general public and a fed up daydreaming cashier.

For real though, I could easily make a lovely little magnetic play set..
It was an even more epic fail than Black to the Future 2 starring Tracy Morgan’s nephew Alphonston. I was one of the physicists charged with resolving the problem.

Today we safely erected a new magnetic field, thus saving ourselves from certain destruction. Apocalypse — averted. Tonight, instead of a slow death by radiation interstellar debris, there will be parties. Oh so awesome parties. We’re having ours at the lab. There’s nothing like a room full of nerds taking crazy non-chemical drugs, of which there are copious amounts at this point. We may even play magnetic spin the bottle.

Slow day at the office? Here’s a trick that’ll make your coworkers smile. Dangerously Fun has a guide to build a homopolar motor from a battery, copper wire, and magnet. A homopolor motor doesn’t rely on electromagnets in an armature changing their polarity to force a rotation movement compared to stationary magnets. Instead, they use an electrical current’s orientation to a magnetic field to provide a repulsive or rotational force. In this implementation, the current moves through a loops of copper wire from one pole of a battery to the other. A rare-earth magnet on one pole of the battery provides the magnetic field.

After the break we’ve embedded video of this simple example as well as a few more complex homopolar examples such as a five speed version. The motor in action certainly brings a smile to our faces and places this firmly in the useless machines family of hacks.

It’s a magnet and is usually holding up bits of paper on our fridge door, but I took it down to take its picture. I would like to go to Hawaii, but I haven’t been there. The magnet was brought from there from my friend S, who was on a round-the-world trip at the time. Lucky her! She is very good at maths.

Electronic scales, even expensive lab-grade units, can be influenced by a wide variety of electronic

Electronic scales, even expensive lab-grade units, can be influenced by a wide variety of electronic “emissions”. We’ve seen Chargemasters being affected by cordless telephones and older CRT computer monitors. When stray emissions interfere with digital scales, you can get erractic readings, or the scales can drift with time. The smart thing to do, of course, is to physically isolate your digital scale from the sources of interference — keep them away from computer equipment and wireless base units. If you still have problems with drift or unstable read-outs, thankfully there are some inexpensive accessories that can restore your scale’s reliability. Reader Scott G. found a ferrous (magnetic) filter that attaches to the cord of his digital scale. This inexpensive filter cured his scale’s tendency to drift.

Scott explains: “I had an issue with a drifting zero on my PACT, which made it unusable. It was happening at my house, but not at other locations, such as my office. The fix for my issue was a ferrous noise filter on the scale’s power supply cord. It is basically a hinged barrel-shaped plastic tube that contains two magnets. Near the scale end of the cord, lay the cord into the slot, wrap it back through, then close the filter around the cord. Before installing the ferrous filters, my scale would drift off as much as 2.9 grains, which was being caused by some type of electronic ‘noise’ in the environment. The PACT is absolutely stable now.”

Finding and Installing Magnetic Noise Filters
Scott tells us: “You’ll see a lot of these type filters on the cords for computer acessories. You may have to experiment to find one that works for you. Some have different magnets that have different filtering abilities. My filter cost about $3.00. I purchased it at Randolph and Rice Industrial Electronics in Nashville, TN, item #SF.065.” You should also be able to find these kind of filters at Fry’s, Radio Shack, or other electronics supply stores.

While some magnetic filters require the power cord to run straight through, other designs allow you to loop the cord once around the filter (see photos). Looping the cord actually enhances the performance of the filter. You can also get improved filtration of electronic interference by putting a magnetic ‘noise’ filter on BOTH ends of your scale’s power cord.

1. Your score can jump by 100 if you consecutively get strikes. I know this because I am always beaten by it lol.

2. I used to wonder how those pro bowlers would curve the ball but the people who drill the holes in the ball can actually make that possible and all you have to do is bowl it down the alley.

3. There is a magnet in custom balls that keep them from going to the canals.

4. If you’re using a house ball, it’s no guarantee but your best chance of getting a strike is by bowling it fast and straight lol that’s my technique.

5. At the local bowling place, there is a ladies night on Tuesdays that is strictly only for the Arab women. No disrespect but can they even see where they are bowling? What if they trip on their abayas???

Do you ever have one of those days when you feel like you’re just a magnet for stupid? Today w

Do you ever have one of those days when you feel like you’re just a magnet for stupid? Today was one of those days for me…started right about the time I got to work (imagine that… ). And it just seemed that if it was possible to ask a stupid question…I got it. And then I got stupid…because you know stupid is catching. I don’t know…maybe it was the time change or the cooler weather or something but I definitely had more than my fair share of stupid today. Hope tomorrow is a “brighter” day…LOL!

But it was not all together a bad day. I bought my new running shoes at lunch today…the latest and greatest in Brooks Adrenaline. And wait until I tell you about breaking them in this afternoon. These shoes are SWEET…and I love them already. I may go 11 miles on Saturday after all…LOL!! After buying my shoes I went in search of a Wonder Woman costume for the last half of my lunch hour. I mean now that they’re on sale…might as well buy it. Why do I need a Wonder Woman costume after Halloween you ask? I know - probably doesn’t seem to make much sense. But there is a method to the madness.

You see, I have agreed to be on the Zen Master’s (aka ‘D’) Mud Run team for next year. He informed me that everyone is dressing as Super Heros. Yes, he told me this after I agreed to be on the team. So, I said I would only be on the team if I get to be Wonder Woman. I tried Invisible Woman but he didn’t go for that… . But I figured I could get a costume cheap after Halloween. I tried Halloween Express and K-Mart…no dice. I thought I was going to have to break down and order one from the internet but after getting back to the office I realized that Party City may have one. I called and they had one left in my size. The salesperson promised to hold it for me until 5:30 p.m. I went straight there after work. Unfortunately, it was NOT on sale…some were, some weren’t. Just my luck that the one I needed wouldn’t be.

But whatever. I’m excited. I have a Wonder Woman costume. I just can’t wait to run an obstacle course dressed as Wonder Woman with my cape – which I realized was actually missing from the costume when I got home. But I called back and they have one and I’m going to pick it up tomorrow. My costume will be complete. The Mud Run will be entertaining to say the least…

And of course, I have taken it to the next level. I suggested that all of us on the Mud Run team that are also running the Cooper River Bridge Run in March should wear our costumes for Cooper River too. I mean why not get two uses out of them? Because after the Mud Run the costumes will be…well, garbage. My only rule is that I will not run Cooper River in go-go boots. Uh-uh, no way. 6.2 miles in go-go boots? I don’t think so…but I’ll wear everything but the go-go boots. For footwear, I’ll be in my Brooks Adrenalines thank you very much. The suggestion is under consideration by the Zen Master…

As for running today…well, at first I thought it wasn’t going to happen. Thought about going this morning but I really didn’t want to run in my old, tired shoes. So, figured I could go after work when I had my new shoes. Just one problem…my mom called shortly after lunch and needed my help to finish decorating my grandmother’s room at the assisted living facility. She’s moving in tomorrow. So, I was going to go help her after work as that seemed a bit more urgent. But then she called back later and she was running behind so I had time to get in my run and still help her. And I was so excited to be able to go run. Yes, you read that right…I was excited to go run. I could hardly believe it either…LOL!

And my run was AWESOME!! I ran the whole 4 miles…no walk breaks. And I wasn’t the least bit sore or exhausted at the end…I think I could have gone another mile (or at least half a mile) before I took a walk break. That is PROGRESS!! I was so excited. Of course, it became challenging at the end but only because it was DARK. Although the moon was beautiful…but running by moonlight and an occassional lamppost is eerie and dangerous. I will definitely need to start earlier if I’m going to keep running in the evenings. But 4 miles with no walk breaks…what a milestone. Amazing what a new pair of shoes can do for you…

Since I didn’t get home tonight until about 10:00 – mom and I worked on my grandmother’s room until after 9:30 and we’re still not finished. Mom is going back early in the morning with my cousin. I didn’t even get to sit down for dinner until about 10:30 so I don’t think I’ll make it up in the morning for my swim. I mean let’s be realistic here - it’s after 11:00 now and I’m just finishing up this post so it not very likely that I will get up early in the morning. I mean you know how much of a morning person I am when I go to bed at 10:00 pm… But I do plan to hit the 5:45 p.m. spin class at the gym tomorrow. Wednesday will be speed work, cross-train on Thursday and run Friday and Saturday. So, we’re off to a good start for the week. Until next time, hope you are a magnet for only the bright, beautiful things in life.
