Tiny magnetic discs just a millionth of a metre in diameter could be used to used to kill cancer cells, according to a study published on Sunday.

Laboratory tests found the so-called “nanodiscs”, around 60 billionths of a metre thick, could be used to disrupt the membranes of cancer cells, causing them to self-destruct.

The discs are made from an iron-nickel alloy, which move when subjected to a magnetic field, damaging the cancer cells, the report published in Nature Materials said.

One of the study’s authors, Elena Rozhlova of Argonne National Laboratory in the United States, said subjecting the discs to a low magnetic field for around ten minutes was enough to destroy 90 percent of cancer cells in tests.

In a commentary on the report, Jon Dobson of Keele University in Britain said antibodies could be used to direct the discs towards tumour cells.

“This provides an elegant and rapid technique for targeting tumour destruction without the side effects associated with systemic treatments such as chemotherapy,” Dobson wrote.

 Metallica es una banda originaria de Estados Unidos. Fue fundada en 1981 en Los Ángeles por el danés Lars Ulrich y James Hetfield, a los que se les unirían Lloyd Grant y Ron McGovney. Estos dos músicos fueron después sustituidos por el guitarrista Dave Mustaine y el bajista Cliff Burton, respectivamente. Mustaine fue despedido un año después de ingresar en la banda debido a su excesiva adicción a las drogas y al alcohol, y fundó la banda Megadeth, siendo sustituido en Metallica por Kirk Hammett. Por otra parte, en 1986, la muerte de Cliff Burton en un accidente de autobús en Suecia provocó la entrada al grupo de Jason Newsted, que, quince años más tarde, sería sustituido tras su deserción por el bajista actual de la banda, Robert Trujillo.

Hasta la fecha, la banda ha editado nueve discos de estudio. Las ventas totales de Metallica superan los 100 millones, y son considerados uno de los cuatro grandes del thrash metal junto con Anthrax, Slayer y Megadeth. Además, el grupo ha conseguido numerosos premios musicales, entre los que destacan siete Grammys, dos premios otorgados por la cadena musical MTV, dos galardones de la Academia de Música Americana y un premio de la revista Billboard, y posee una estrella en el paseo de la fama de la revista Kerrang!.

Okay, so I’m cheating a bit here again! No matter what ‘nad designs I go out with, people (boys and girls) always comment on this when I wear it. They would get excited and ask me where I got it, then get bummed when they realize that they’re not available in the US (however, they do pop up on eBay every now and then).

I’m lucky enough to have friends in Europe to pick them up for me. This is the Silver color:

For those of you have have this, here is how I apply (I’m using my handy hand chart here):

1. Apply base coat (I used NailTek II Foundation) on fingers 1-10.
2. Apply one coat of Star Magnet on fingers 1-10.
3. Apply second coat of Star Magnet to finger 1, then put finger one on magnet holder (but make sure polish doesn’t touch the magnet) and hold for 10-20 seconds.
4. Repeat step 3 for remaining fingers.
5. Apply one coat of Top Coat (I used Poshe).

Cu ceva timp in urma, v-am dat o explicatie despre cele 12 nivele ale ADN-ului, felul in care ele exista, teoretic. Noi am fost atenti sa nu va spunem ce face fiecare nivel, de fiecare data. Noi va dam doar scopul si energia lor, sau atributele lor de stocare. Veti vedea acesta, intr-o clipa. Dar, pe masura ce lucreaza impreuna, fiecare particica se modifica, in functie de ceea ce face cealalta. Deci, puteti spune ca aveti un motor in care toate partile continua sa se schimbe, iar schimbarea este in functie de ceea ce are nevoie motorul. Complex si cuantic, in acelasi timp.

Intr-o stare cuantum, nu exista timp. Intr-o stare cuantum, nu exista un loc anume unde sa fie ceva anume. Asta, pentru ca, in mecanica cuantica orice miscare, daca vreti sa-i spuneti asa, sau orice energie, daca vreti sa-i spunem asa, toate sunt peste tot impreuna, toti ca unul singur. Va puteti imagina ceva atat de complex? Acum, imaginati-va toate acestea, duplicate de sute de milioane de ori in corpul vostru.

Pentru ca ADN-ul sa functioneze corespunzator, sa faca toate lucrurile despre care vom vorbi ezoteric si cuantic, 300 de trilioane de parti ale ADN-ului trebuie sa stie (ceva), in acelasi timp! Trebuie sa existe o comunicare ce are loc intre ADN-ul vostru microscopic al unghiei de la picior si, in acelasi timp, cel al firului de par. Amandoua trebuie sa stie despre acel lucru, instantaneu. Apoi, acele trilioane de piese trebuie sa fie de acord, trebuie sa existe o energie de absorbtie a constientei. Toate acestea trebuie sa se intample intr-un cadru 3D, care exista  in realitate voastra. Nu exista niciun cuvant in stiinta pentru acest proces, daca nu cumva il acceptati pe acela creat pentru a descrie fotonii, denumit “retea de sarma ghimpata.”

Exista, in schimb, “o confluenta a energiei.” Confluenta in engleza inseamna contopire a energiilor, astfel incat acestea se transforma in altceva, devin o unitate. Stiinta nu poate vedea inca in ADN, dar, la un anumit nivel, ea stie ca trebuie sa existe. Cum altfel face corpul Uman, ceea ce face?

Structura celulara este specifica si unica. La fel cum o masina este specializata, ati auzit de celulele stem care au aceasta caracteristica. Dar ADN-ul este absolut la fel peste tot in corp. Nu este specific. Nu aveti un ADN specific in unghia de la picior, sau un ADN specific al firului de par, sau un ADN al inimii. Aveti un ADN propriu, unic. Trilioane de copii de inregistrari cuatice aflate in corpul vostru trebuie sa comunice intre ele instantaneu , in caz contrar, ar trebui sa incetati sa mai existati. Cum au facut acesta? Stiinta nu i-a dat, inca, nicio denumire acestui  proces de comunicare intre strandurile ADN-ului. Este o cuanticitate in interiorul “supei” magnetice.

Haideti sa studiem modul in care este realizata comunicarea si astfel se va contura intregul puzzle. Maestrul din serviciul magnetic se afla in fata voastra. De-a lungul anilor, multi au crezut ca atributul magnetic a lui Kryon a fost grila. Aceasta parere este doar partial adevarata, dar este adevarata cea legata de magnetismul ADN-ului. Fiecare bucla a ADN-ului are un camp magnetic, care se suprapune buclei de langa, care la randul ei se suprapune buclei de langa aceasta.

Sute de trilioane de suprapuneri echivaleaza cu o constiinta. Aceasta reprezinta o imprimare magnetica, pe care fiinta umana o poarta in jurul ei. Magnetica este o energie interdimensionala, o energie cuantica, iar aceasta imprimare creeaza aura umana. Aura nu este un camp magnetic si nu veti putea vedea o aura, cu ajutorul unui echipament magnetic. O aura este rezultatul unei confluente de comunicare a ADN-ului in interiorul unui corp Uman, o amprenta cuantica, o fuziune a energiei, pentru crearea unui camp cuantic nemasurabil prin nimic pe aceasta Planeta, pana acum.

Va spun aceste lucruri, pentru ca trebuie sa intelegeti ce se intampla in ADN-ul vostru, toate se intampla in acelasi timp, la fiecare nivel energetic al acestuia. Ganditi-va la coordonare, la puzzle. Daca intentionati sa aveti un fel de activare ezoterica, care este ceva nou in ADN-ul vostru, ganditi-va ce se intampla! A magnet is a seemingly ordinary piece of metal that is surrounded by an invisible field of force which affects other magnetic materials nearby. A manager is an otherwise ordinary individual that, when working, appears to be surrounded by an invisible field of force that affects others nearby.

All magnets have two poles. A north pole always attracts, or pulls, a south pole while pairs of like poles, north and north or south and south, repel, or push, each other.

It is common to describe someone as having a “magnetic personality” if they have attractive qualities that “pull” people to them. The key to being a “magnetic manager” is to be certain that the force that you exert is a “pull”, not a “push”.

Play with two simple desk magnets for a moment. Align the poles properly and one magnet will easily pull the other, quickly, efficiently, and in a straight line. Reverse the alignment and the one magnet will push the other. When the invisible force of the magnetic field is used to exert a push, the movement is irregular and inefficient.

Just as the magnetic field can be used to push or pull, a manger can make a conscious decision to exert a push or a pull. When faced with that decision, remember the ease and efficiency of the movement generate when the force exerted is a pull. When the force exerted is a push, it takes longer to generate the same amount of movement.

You can’t “pull” someone ahead if you’re standing behind them. To exert the “pull” of “magnetic management” you must be willing to be out front. Being out front requires leadership and involves some risk.

A “magnetic manager” controls that risks of being out front by planning. Managers are supposed to make good things happen which would not otherwise of happened. What’s new, different, and better this year because we planned it that way. Good results without planning come from good luck rather than good planning.
“Magnetic management” energizes people by instilling in them a sense of purpose. You can’t energize someone by pushing them. It requires leadership by example. That’s the “pull” of “magnetic management”.

“Magnetic management” is a leadership style that requires special emphasis in three areas. Consistency, flexibility, and support.

You will have a difficult time in exerting a magnetic pull on your organization if you are not consistent. A lack of consistency in leadership creates confusion amongst followers. With confusion comes indecision and a lack of initiative. Faced with a lack of initiative, managers are tempted to push. The “magnetic manager” knows however, that it will be more effective to find a way to exert a “pull”.

To enable initiative to develop within an organization, a manger must display some flexibility. A “magnetic manager” wants to pull his or her people to a common objective but recognizes that they need some latitude in how they get there. When a manger permits a reasonable degree of flexibility, energy levels and enthusiasm for the task at hand will remain high. Rigid environments are characterized by lack of initiative and an absence of “magnetic managers”.

A “magnetic manager” creates an environment where people are comfortable in taking chances. If employees are praised when their initiatives are successful and criticized when they fail, initiative will cease to exist. “Magnetic management” requires setting the boundaries for initiative and being supportive when the results aren’t always as good as we would like.

Because its your business, keep two small magnets on your desk. Every now and then remind yourself how much more effective a “pull” is than a push.

All magnetic and piezoelectric materials have a Curie point. The Curie point is the temperature at which the magnetic or piezoelectric properties go to zero. The curve is generally very steep, so they do not lose significant amounts their property until close to the Curie point.

Long ago we did some work using microwaves to heat thermoplastic adhesives (hot melts) or cure thermosetting materials with heat. We were working with the standard consumer microwave frequency of 2450 MHz. We found that carbon black was very effective for both, but as we know microwaves do not heat uniformly. Even microwave ovens with mixers, which reflect the microwaves throughout the cavity, have hot and cold spots.  So while carbon black heated very quickly, it also overheated some areas before the material was all at the desired minimum temperature.  This would be a huge safety problem, especially in the hands of a consumer. The adhesive could heat to the point of degradation or even auto-ignition. Consumer microwave vary so much in power and power distribution, how would you even give them a recommended heating time that would be both safe and hot enough?

Eventually we discovered ferrites and the Curie point concept.  A wide range of ferrites are commercially available, with a wide range of Curie points, and a wide range of frequency absorption. By using a ferrite for heating, when the adhesive temperature approaches the Curie point of the ferrite, the ferrite shuts down, allowing the other areas of the adhesive to get up to temperature without overheating the faster heating areas. They provide an elegant solution to the problem. It should be noted however that various resin absorb microwaves without any additives. Furthermore, their microwave absorption properties vary with temperature, so  a material that doesn’t absorb at 25C may absorb vigorously at 100C, so this needs to be understood at part of the resin selection process.

In the adhesive curing project we were making robotic adhesive traces which we then wanted to cure in a microwave oven. In this case the adhesive was a silicone material- we wanted to make a one component heat curing silicone compound that we could make rubber articles from.

One of the more interesting things about this project was that the ferrites were not found by a chemist or engineer. They were found by a very creative inventor/technician who had no college education.  He found the ferrites by finding experts who could point him in the right direction. The point is, don’t reject technical solution because they come from someone with a lower degree of education than you. There is a great deal of education prejudice in  technical groups, particularly in large companies. Don’t contribute to it.

This is one of the most guarded secrets in the world bar none!

If  you can belive it some one has built a generator that produces “Free electricity”, I must say that again, “Free Electricity”

But the technology used is years old. This is an invention that was invented at a time when companies were being formed to Generate electricity and sell it to the public, so when the inventer asked for funding for his Free Electricity Generator. The mans life was ruined and his invention was discredited as a fake. Still government of the World are not taking note of what is now almost an underground movement to set up and build your own Free Electricity Generator. I work in the Renewable Energy sector laying cables in the sea bed between wind turbines. the wind turbines produce Free Electricity and yet are costing countries around the world Billions upon Billions of Pounds or Dollars what ever! 

The scariest thing about all of this is that the government’s of the world are now responsible for global worming (so we are told) partly as a result of generating Electricity. How Ironic is that…

No, that wasn’t an earthquake shaking downtown Albany last night.  It was the sonic assault of the one-time reigning metal gods reclaiming their divinity.  Metallica’s 2-hour show at the Times Union Center re-solidified their status as heavy metal heroes, drawing on a wide variety of songs to please both the old hardcore fans and the newer ones alike.

The darkened stage blazed into a net of laser beams as the first notes of “This Was Just Your Life,” the opening track to their newest album Death Magnetic, blasted out of the speakers.  Singer/guitarist James Hetfield was barley illuminated as he belted out the lyrics, while drummer Lars Ulrich, guitarist Kirk Hammett, and bassist Robert Trujillo danced in shadows around the open stage.  Upon the final notes of the 7-minute song, all the stage lights burst to life, finally giving the crowd a good look at the veteran rockers.  To say the crowd greeted them enthusiastically would be quite understated.  Hetfield whipped the fans into a frenzy between songs, spouting rhetoric about everyone being a part of the Metallica family, blah blah blah…but the audience ate it up.

Following another new song “End of the Line,” long-time fans of the old Metallica got an unbelievable treat – “Ride the Lightning,” the title track of their second album.  And Metallica cranked it out like they just recorded it yesterday rather than 25 years ago (and they probably hadn’t played it live in 20 years at least).

The preamble to “One” featured a monstrous pyrotechnic display as nearly the whole stage erupted in flames, echoing the sounds of war that precede the song.  In my opinion, “One” is about as perfect as a metal song can be, from the beautiful, haunting opening melodies, to the eerie, descriptive lyrics that take us inside the mind of a quadruple amputee who also loses his sight, speech and hearing and is waiting to die, to the final few minutes of machine-gun riffs and wailing guitar solos.  And they played it perfectly.

They played a good number of songs from Death Magnetic, the other highlights being “All Nightmare Long” and “The Day that Never Comes,” both showcasing the band’s return to a much more thrash-metal sound.

Another fantastic surprise for the old fans was “Welcome Home (Sanitarium),” a fantastic blend of beautiful melodies and hardcore metal.

As the set began heading to the finish line, they broke out two of their best – the title track to “Master of Puppets,” for which Hetfield was more than happy to let the audience sing most of the lyrics, and then, taking me and probably everyone by ecstatic surprise, “Battery.”  This is one of the fastest songs they’ve ever recorded, and they played it like they were still in their 20’s instead of pushing 50.  It was astounding…my neck hurts from head-banging.

They closed the set with the overplayed but crowd-pleasing “Enter Sandman,” complete with fireballs and audience sing-a-longs.

They left the stage for a few minutes and came right back with three more oldies: their cover of Queen’s “Stone Cold Crazy,” and then two tracks from their first album Kill ‘Em All – “Motorbreath” and “Seek and Destroy,” and during the latter giant Metallica beach balls rained down from the ceiling and bounced around the crowd.  It was a fitting end to a crazy, fun show that, as I alluded to in my previous post, brought all Metallica fans together.  Hmm, maybe that clap-trap about the “Metallica family” has some merit?

Prior to Metallica, Virginia’s Lamb of God played for almost an hour, shoving their pounding death/thrash metal down everyone’s throats.  Lamb of God is arguably the best metal band to arrive on the scene in the last decade.  Their riffs are incredibly tight, and singer Randy Blythe’s demonic snarling vocals are a great fit.  I saw them open for Slayer about 3 years ago and they nearly upstaged the speed-metal icons.  Last night they probably recruited a lot of new fans who hadn’t heard them, but they probably also turned off a good chunk of the crowd.  Metallica fans have a diverse fan base, and those who really like more radio-friendly metal probably found Lamb of God a little too intense.  But they played well and Blythe interacted a lot with the crowd.  Unfortunately the vocal mix was not loud enough, making it hard to hear the lyrics.

Opening band Volbeat was pretty good.  Their sound was kind of rockabilly-meets-punk, with a little thrash thrown in.  They were very entertaining, and the sparse crowd seemed to enjoy it.

This Metallica concert gets 4 out of 5 stars!
