easyJet is to add a three-times-a-week service from Manchester to Mahon. Flights start in May 2010, starting at £52 one way including taxes.

The Manchester flights join an increasing number of UK-Menorca routes operated by easyJet. The addition brings to six the number of UK regional airports offering easyJet flights to Mahon:

London Luton: Mon, Wed, Thu, Fri, Sun
Bristol: Tue, Thu, Sat
Liverpool: Mon, Wed, Fri, Sat

Episode 1 is complete and raring to go!

[please excuse some weird sound things that happened - need to fix that]

So here we go….I decided to start this little adventure by going to Las Ventas – a Spanish food import store near my house in Boston’s South End.  Luiz, the owner was wayyyy enthusiastic about Spanish cheeses and very helpful.  Here’s what he said about Spanish Cheeses:

Apparently there’s 100 different kinds of Spanish cheese (clearly my taste buds have their work cut out for them), although he only carries about 20.  He said that Spanish Cheese is (surprise) better than French cheese because they have more diversity and complexity in the products they make the cheese from, using cow, goat and sheep milk.   So we’ll eat our way through his store eating all three origins. Also he said that he only carries artesian cheeses, and no commercial cheeses, and that artesian cheeses are –wait for it – healthy for you because they have essential enzymes which commercial cheeses, in their quest for looking uniform, loose in the process.

I’m not a cheese snob (yet) and do love the good ol’ American cheese food product slice, so we’ll see…

So I asked my friends Kate (community organizer) and Judith (just completed a major book on the Milosevic trials) to join me for the first tasting. here’s what we ate:

1. Cow cheese: Mahon – from the island of Menorca in the Mediterranean.  It’s aged 4 months and Luiz described it as slightly tart with a salty flavor.

From the interwebs: Port Mahon is the capital of Menorca, part of the Balearic Islands , which also include major party Island Ibiza.  Apparently the folks on this ‘minor’ island have something better to do that clean up after sunburnt strung out british twentysomething clubbers. Legend tells that the winds of Menorca modify the personality of people. Perhaps that’s why it was so darn tasty.  And what do you know…I found a whole website which describes how the mahon cheese is made! Looks like an export promotion site for the island called “Illes Balears Qualitit” I’m not sure what language that is but it looks like it means Balearic Island Quality?

Oh also in this episode we introduce the legendary ‘Stoned Wheat Thin’ tasted test, my favorite cracker from a redneck upbringing in NC.

2. Goat Cheese: Leonara from Leon in spain – A young semisoft goat cheese with full bodied complex flavor with a long lingering finish and tanginess.

Ok  apparently this Cheese won #1 at last year’s Fancy Food Show in NYC and you can def tell.  We loved this one!  It was a bit sour at first and then it just got better and better!   Not much on the internets about this one…except a few enthusiastic blog posts J  including one from another shop in my neighborhood, Fromaggio, which I’ll be attacking soon.

Leon is in the northwest of Spain…and looks fabulous to visit.

This cheese and the next one were imported by some company called www.forevercheese.com I need to check them out soon….

3. Sheep Cheese: This type of cheese I had shockingly actually had before: It’s a Manchego aged 4 months from La Mancha, Castilla. – it was mildly piquant and slightly nutty.  I found it a bit flavorless and zzzzzzz.  Maybe I’ll like the aged ones better…

What was most interesting to me about this cheese is that it’s brand name is El Trigal, but when I asked for the brand name , Luiz passionately said to me that brand does not matter, but more where and when the cheese is from and who the artist was who made it.   I do think brands matter a bit…so we’ll see…

 La capital es Mahón, tras un paseo por sus calles principales para visitar el ayuntamiento, el mercado y la catedral, se puede bajar al puerto por una escalinata, descansar en una plaza refrescándose con algún granizado y pasear a lo largo del puerto contemplando barcos, yates y transatlánticos hasta llegar a la escultura de una sirena.

 La segunda ciudad es Ciudadela, sobre su puerto encontraremos una plaza con el ayuntamiento y unas calles donde estan todas las tiendas de souvenirs, algunas de estas calles se adentran hacia la catedral y otras bajan hacia el puerto donde encontraremos muchos restaurantes donde comer o cenar, y en el último caso estaremos al lado de una discoteca y varios pubs en plantas bajas con terraza estilo chill-out sobre estas.

Tras visitar sus dos ciudades principales os recomendamos que visiteis los pueblos de Fornells y Binibequer, el segundo más bonito si cabe.

Una excursión imperdonable es ‘un día en el mar’ que consiste en recorrer gran parte de la costa sur en un barco que sale del puerto de Ciudadela. La excursión comienza sobre las 10.00 y acaba sobre las 17.00. Durante este periodo se hacen dos paradas de una hora en dos de las principales calas de la zona. Se pasa el porrón de pomada (bebida típica de la isla) en dos ocasiones. Y se prepara una sabrosa paella para los excursionistas.

Aunque los ingleses no muestren el más mínimo interés por conocer la isla mas allá de los límites del complejo en el que residan, la isla (sus calas, acantilados, faros, etc.) bien merecen ser visitados aunque se tenga que andar varias decenas de minutos bajo un tórrido sol. Por esto recomendamos el alquiler de un coche para aproximarse al máximo a las muchas zonas de la isla y luego llegar caminando hasta la cala.

 Es facil acercarse a los 1.000 kms de recorrido en una semana dentro de una isla que a penas supera los 40 kms de ancho.

Visita ineludible a La cova d’en Xoroi www.covadenxoroi.com  un Pub incrustado en una cueva que está a media altura en el interior de un acantilado. Se puede entrar por 12 euros antes de las 23.00 como si fuera un Pub y quedarse hasta altas horas de la madrugada, o se puede entrar por 24 euros pasadas las 23.00 como si fuera una discoteca.

Museo Restaurant Binisues
This is an amazingly beautiful house in the middle of nowhere, signposted off the main Mahon-Ciutadella road just before the turn to Cala Galdana. It is a museum of antiquities but the restaurant is fab and the views superb – well worth a visit.

Near the main steps up into the town. Ask for a window table to take advantage of the lovely harbour views. The food is delightful and the owner Lluis is very nice too. Try the baked cod on a bed of spinach – mmm.

If you like Thai you’ll love this. Quite pricey but well worth it.

We like the lunchtime menu del dia which, for 15 euros per person, is amazing for three courses. Lively bar in the evenings.

Port Antoni, Cales Fonts, Es Castell
Port Antoni is right in the corner, the first restaurant you come to. We’ve visited many times and the wide choice of food is always special. Antony & Laura do a superb job here, including a Sunday roast.

Scandals, Es Castell
Situated on the road out of Es Castell, just before the right turn to Sant Lluis. Don’t be fooled by the exterior, which is pretty unassuming. The food here is amazing. The menu is very varied and there is something for everyone, whatever your taste. Very highly recommended.

Red Willow County commissioners signed an agreement Monday morning to purchase a dog from an Alabama kennel, a German shepherd or Belgian Malinois to be trained as a K-9 officer for the Red Willow County sheriff’s department.

Sheriff Gene Mahon told commissioners during their weekly meeting that a K-9 committee has raised about $9,200 in donations, $6,000 of which will be used to buy the dog. Training for the dog and sheriff’s deputy Sgt. Joe Koetter will cost about $1,400.

The dog will be shipped from Kasseburg Canine Training Center in New Market, Ala., probably in September, Mahon said. Training in tracking and drug detection for the dog and Koetter will start in October at the Nebraska State Patrol Training Center in Grand Island.

The new dog will be the county’s second K-9 officer. Styker, a German shepherd, served the county from summer 1997 until his retirement in 2006. He died March 23, 2007, after veterinarian Dr. Wayne Watkins diagnosed a cancerous growth on his back.

The sheriff’s department will continue to accept donations that will help pay for dog food, regular veterinary care, training/recertification and liability insurance. Tax-deductible donations can be made out to the “Nebraska Community Foundation,” the non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization that provides Nebraskans and former Nebraskans a way to donate to the state or its communities.

The note on a check must indicate that the donation is for the “Red Willow County Canine Unit,” Sheriff Mahon said. Donations are to be mailed to the sheriff’s office, at 502 Norris Ave., McCook, Ne 69001.

A champ and community hero

WHEN was the last time a world boxing champion did your washing up?

This column spent yesterday
morning with Gary ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan, AFO world champ at light-middleweight, as he prepared for a bout tomorrow night in Cork against
former Polish middleweight champion Marcin Piatkowski.

O’Sullivan came to the attention of boxing cognoscenti when he was brought to the States to fatten Robert Harris’s record. After O’Sullivan had cracked a couple of Harris’s ribs to win in the first round, things changed.

He stayed on to train on the east coast, but not in just any old gym. The Corkman fetched up in Petronelli’s Gym in Brockton, Massachusetts. If you’re a fight fan of a certain vintage, you’ll associate Brockton and Petronelli’s with Marvin Hagler; it’s where he learned how to become Marvellous.

If you’re a fight fan of an even more certain vintage you’ll remember the Brockton Blockbuster himself, Rocco Marchegiano, or Rocky Marciano.

It was a dream come true for O’Sullivan to fight out of Brockton; his father Denis was a Marciano fan, and his mother Jacinta was a Hagler fan, but apart from the romance, there was reality. Petronelli’s is a finishing school for champions, and as O’Sullivan puts it, what he learned there he wouldn’t have been able to learn anywhere else.

When he came back to Leeside armed with his Brockton education, he was big box office, packing out Neptune Stadium with 2,500 supporters. When he fought in Boston he wasn’t short of support either, with plenty of Cork accents in the crowd. One of his pals lost his job when he told his boss he’d be heading to America to support Spike; when the pal returned and found another job, a similar dilemma arose for the next bout.

Another job lost. It’s all going O’Sullivan’s way: down the line he aims to go from light-middleweight to middleweight proper.

Tomorrow night’s bout is at a catch weight between light-middle and
middle, and good preparation for the step up.

The fight tomorrow night will also be broadcast live on the web by gofightlive.com, an internet company which has covered O’Sullivan’s previous fights. The medium-term plan is a world title shot; as a professional sportsman doing what he loves for a living, O’Sullivan puts his cards on the table: “I’m living the dream.”

THAT’S only half Spike’s story. He still lives in his home place, Mahon, a southside suburb of Cork that doesn’t always attract favourable media coverage, but he’s proud of where he comes from.

He’s put a gymnasium together with his own hands, where he runs exercise classes for the locals, and the Lough Mahon Boxing Club, which has already sent out All-Ireland champions.

The likes of John and Peter Keane, James and John McDonagh and
Kathleen O’Reilly are the heroes of the future. More initiates in the
rigorous discipline of boxing. More potential role models.

O’Sullivan also gives something back by offering kids in the neighbourhood a good example, say community activists.

He’s a regular visitor to the Mahon Community Centre; when we walked in yesterday morning the
welcome from the ladies running the coffee shop was warm and genuine, and that’s where he did the washing up, rinsing out our cups.

“They’re unbelievable supporters,” says O’Sullivan. “When I fought in Dublin they booked out the whole Red Cow Hotel to follow me. They’re fantastic.”

O’Sullivan visited local schools
recently with his world championship belt and Denis Coffey, manager of the Mahon Community Centre, says the entire community got a boost.

“If I can show people what you can do with hard work and application, then great,” says the boxer.

I’m not sure how it happens, but sometimes a weekend comes and goes and I neglect to visit my local cheese shop. And then Monday morning arrives in all its rainy dreariness and I realize I’m without a cheese for the week and both of the cheesemongers in my town are closed for the day. Fortunately, yet another new gourmet shop has opened in Old Town, Alexandria (VA), to help fill the gap. “The Butcher’s Block, A Market by RW” at the newly-opened Lorien Hotel is essentially the kitchen pantry of Chef Robert Wiedmaier, who expands his DC restuarant empire (Brasserie Beck, Marcel’s) with Brabo and Brabo Tasting Room here at the Lorien. In addition to wine, beer and gourmet goodies like salts, chocolates, olives, nuts, etc., the shop offers sandwiches, sauces and stocks, charcuterie and fresh meat – pork belly! – and a small collection of fine cheeses. The cheeses tilted towards a European selection, and I was able to find a Mahon Curado that I’ve enjoyed in the past but have not yet officially reviewed here. A carton of fresh Lucques olives and bottle of wine rounded out the purchase. (I have to confess I didn’t think too hard about the wine selection; Brabo’s Chef de Cuisine Chris Watson was pouring complementary glasses to entice shoppers to linger – quite successfully – and its summer-ready flavor were an easy sell on those of us hiding out from the rain and thinking of warmer weather.) 

Mahon Curado is an aged, raw cows-milk cheese from Menorca, Spain. The semi-firm cheese is coated in paprika and olive oil before aging, imparting a rich, nutty flavor with a hint of smoke. The wine I purchased, Velt.1 2007 Gruner Veltliner of Austria, is a crisp summer white with a lovely yellow-green hue. Its bright, acidic taste was a nice match with the sweet Mahon. And of course, few things go better with Spanish cheeses than olives and pork products; in this case, a “prosciutto-style” ham from Virginia’s Cibola Farms.

Alice Mahon, the veteran left Labour activist has left the party she has belonged to for 50 years.

In an interview with the BBC (see link above) she said that she hoped that with a change of leadership the Labour Party may have become “more caring and progressive”, but that she “could not have been more wrong”. She cites the undemocratic nature of Labour Party, making it impossible for the left to reclaim New Labour, the betrayal of election promises – the lack of a referendum on Europe, the privatisation of the Post Office and the continuing troop expansion into an unwinnable war in Afghanistan. She explains that left wingers in Labour have been deselected and conference has become a talking shop and simply ignored. Morevoer, its policies such as the Welfare Bill are attacking the very people which the Labour Party was originally supposed to represent.

This reminds me of a certain comedy sketch . . .

Look, I took the liberty of examining this party when I got home, and I discovered the only reason that it had been sitting in Parliament in the
first place was that it had been nailed there.

Well of course it was nailed down – otherwise Brown would have muscled up to Dave Prentis and VOOM! BAM!

Crime rates in Red Willow County and Southwest Nebraska continue to climb. Drug activity is on the increase, and there always seems to be a need to track down or find someone.

For these reasons, a committee of individuals and law enforcement officers is starting a fund drive to purchase, train and maintain a new canine officer. Red Willow County has been without a K-9 officer for two years.

The committee needs to raise $6,000 for the purchase of the dog and $15,865 for life-long training and certification, veterinary care and food.

The new dog would live with Red Willow County Sheriff’s deputy Sgt. Joe Koetter.

This new dog would be Red Willow County’s second law enforcement dog, filling the vacancy left when “Stryker” died on March 23, 2007.

Stryker, nicknamed “the long paw of the law,” lived with Red Willow County sheriff’s deputies Donny Sailors for one year and Alan Kotschwar for nine years. Stryker’s career started in 1997, and ended 10 years later when McCook veterinarian Dr. Wayne Watkins diagnosed a fast-growing cancerous growth on his back. Kotschwar’s oldest son, Nathan, who was a veterinary medicine student at Kansas State University at the time, helped his dad take Stryker to Dr. Watkins’ Red Willow Animal Clinic, and administered the shot that eased him to sleep.

Stryker had been retired for a year, diagnosed with hip dysplasia, an ailment common in German shepherds.

Kotschwar family members said at the time of Stryker’s death that he had been “a serious deputy and a beloved pet.” Alan Kotschwar said, “When Stryker was not working, he was our family pet. He was just one of the family.”

Stryker had been involved mainly in drug detection and tracking, as the new dog will be, said Red Willow County Sheriff Gene Mahon. “The need for a K-9 officer continued after Stryker’s death,” Mahon said. The closest K-9 officers are in North Platte and Holdrege.

Crime rates and drug activities are on the rise, he said, and the sheriff’s department has been called upon numerous times to track offenders who walk away from the Work Ethic Camp operated in McCook by the Nebraska Department of Corrections.

The dog will be purchased from Kasseburg Kennels of New Market, Ala. K-9 operations expert and trainer Pamela Jo Rogers has provided dogs bred in Holland and Germany for American law enforcement agencies for 27 years. Her dogs work with the Nebraska State Patrol, police departments in Omaha, Lincoln and Kearney, and for sheriff’s departments in Otoe, Saline and Lancaster counties. In Kansas, her dogs are used by the Goddard Police Department and the Sedgwick and Jackson county sheriff’s departments.

The new dog and Koetter will be trained and certified at the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center in Grand Island. Lt. Mark Stokey is the commander of the Patrol’s Police Service Dog Division. Stokey was formerly stationed in North Platte, and worked with the K-9 officer, Falco, who, with Caesar, were the State Patrol’s first two canine officers in 1988.

The new dog will be owned by Red Willow County, and will be made available to the Nebraska State Patrol, the McCook Police Department and the Nebraska Game and Parks for investigations inside Red Willow County, and for emergencies throughout Southwest Nebraska. “We will go where we need to go,” Sheriff Mahon said. “In an emergency, we’ll take the dog and go.”

A committee is spear-heading the fund-raising effort to purchase and maintain the new dog. Committee members are Sheriff Mahon, Sgt. Koetter and Chief Deputy Alan Kotschwar of the sheriff’s department, McCook Police Chief Ike Brown, Nancy Willers and Gene Morris of the McCook Area Crime Stoppers, Dee Friehe of McCook Public Schools and citizens Gene O. Morris and Cal Siegfried.

The purchase of the dog is estimated at $6,000. Other costs will be: The trip to Alabama to pick up the dog, $1,000; outside kennel and cement slab, $500; training, room-and-board and kennel fees for five-six weeks, $1,440; training equipment, $500; vehicle and equipment costs, $10,000; veterinary bills (annually), $1,000; food, (annually), $600; liability insurance (annually), $125; and recertification for handler and dog (annually), $700.

Tax-deductible donations can be made out to the “Nebraska Community Foundation,” the non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization that provides Nebraskans and former Nebraskans a way to donate to the state and its communities.

The note on a check must indicate that the donation is for the “Red Willow County Canine Unit,” Sheriff Mahon said. Donations are to be mailed to the sheriff’s office, at 502 Norris Ave., McCook, Ne 69001, where they will be kept secure until enough funds have been collected to pay for the dog and for the trip to Alabama. Mahon said they hope to have the dog by October or November.

Sheriff Mahon said it is important that no checks be made out to the sheriff’s department for this project. He said that Red Willow County Attorney Paul Wood is working to create a Red Willow County foundation, at which time donations to the canine project can be made out to and sent to the county’s foundation location.

Activities to raise funds for the K-9 project are in the works, and details will be announced as they become finalized.

Gestern nacht haben wir endlich die Balearen erreicht. Und das in der Rekordzeit von …, na ratet mal… 64 Stunden. Das macht bei einer Distanz von ca. 200 Meilen ja doch mehr als 3 Knoten, aber weniger als 4… . Warum so eilig?, so dachten der Wind und auch unser Motor. Der naemlich wollte mitten auf See bei verstopften Filtern nicht mehr laufen. Scheinbar haben wir “Dreck-Diesel” bekommen oder was weiss ich… . 9 Stunden lang haben wir rumgeschraubt und die rettende Idee von Ilonka war,  den alten Filter gegen – man hoere und staune – den noch an Bord befindlichen, neuen Ersatz-(Oel!)-Filter zu tauschen. Wir tauschten den verstopften Treibstofffilter gegen den nicht dazu vorgesehenen Oelfilter und ja, das funktionierte einigermassen. Volle Leistung brachte die Maschine naemlich immer noch nicht. Aber immerhin besser, als in der Flaute auf Wunder zu hoffen war das. Dass der Autopilot auch nicht mehr wollte, ist fast schon nebensaechlich, in anbetracht dem fuer die zweite Haelfte der Tour einsetzenden Suedostwind, der uns bis in den Hafen von Mahon geschoben hat. Traumsegeln! Ja, es ist also geschafft und wir sind echt super Happy, eine neue Gastlandflagge (seit Februar die Dritte) unter der Steuerbordsaling zu fuehren.
