Street photography is probably the most difficult genres of photography to do well. I love it but struggle with it because of the intrusive act of pointing a camera at a stranger and pressing the shutter. I’m also not entirely comfortable lurking and taking photos of people unknown to them. The best street photographers recommend the honest approach, be visible (but discreet), take your picture and acknowledge the person afterwards. This seems to be the best approach to avoid conflict.

Here in France, by law,  every person owns the rights to their own image and as such you cannot use it without their permission. Whereas in Ireland, the U.K, and the U.S you can (in general) photograph and use the image of anyone as long as they are in a public place.

The Big Issue – Limerick 2008

The best cameras for ‘Street’ are small, focus fast (or can be pre-focused) and quiet. The classic 35mm rangefinder as used by Henri Cartier Bresson is supposed to be the ultimate Street tool. Today with digital you don’t have to worry about wasting expensive film. That being said the only full-frame digital rangefinder (Leica M9) on the market costs over £5000 sterling and that’s without a lens!)

The cameras used for these pictures here were digital compact (the canon s95 and G7) and film cameras (Pentax ME super SLR , Agfa isolette and a vivitar ultra wide and slim).

And tonight the story of little Alisa Maier’s abduction from outside her Louisiana Missouri home in July 2010 will be retold on the Biography Channel, which is launching a new show called “Taken”.

Alisa, then just 4 years old, disappeared while playing outside her home on the 4th of July weekend nearly two years ago.

“She was literally a few feet away from her front door,” recalls FBI Supervisory Special Agent Dan Netemeyer, who will appear on tonight’s program. “Right there in her front yard with her brother nearby.”

Netemeyer believes that kidnapper Paul Smith, who had been a convicted sex offender, felt so much pressure from law enforcement alerts and media coverage of the abduction that he was compelled to drop her off safely outside a carwash in Fenton, Missouri where she was found by Good Samaritans who immediately contacted law enforcement.

The little girl’s hair had been cut short in an apparent effort to disguise her as a boy.

“We had an overwhelming law enforcement response,” Netemeyer remembers. “And of course the media gave us a tremendous amount of coverage on this to really put the pressure on him.”

Smith committed suicide a short time after dropping Alisa off as police closed in on his residence in Lincoln County.

Netemeyer still sees the Maier family from time to time — most recently during the filming of the story that will air tonight.

Alisa’s now 6 years old.

“She’s doing well. I don’t think she as any memory of it,” Netemeyer reports. “She’s young, she’s vibrant and she’s just enjoying life.”

The host of “Taken” on the Biography Channel is Elizabeth Smart, who of course made international headlines when she was found several years after being kidnapped from her home in 2002.

The show air at 9 p.m. St. Louis time.

“Cases like that give you hope,” says Netemeyer. “I don’t know if there’s anything you can do that’s more rewarding than to return a child to their mother’s arms.”

Maryland softball started its senior weekend off with a doubleheader split against the No. 19 Florida State Seminoles, falling by a score of 4-3 in the first game before winning the second game 4-1.

Maryland (33-19, 9-8 ACC) was led by the efforts of senior pitcher Kendra Knight, who pitched two complete games. Knight threw an astounding 170 pitches in the first game, giving up four runs, three earned, in the effort.

Maryland led the first game 3-2 headed into the top of the sixth inning. In that inning, the Seminoles (45-12, 16-4 ACC) loaded the bases and scored a run on a fielding error and a second run on a bases loaded walk to take a 4-3 lead.

Florida State pitcher Jessica Nori shut the Terps down through the final two innings, earning the win to improve her record to 4-2 on the season.

The second game featured a pitching battle between Knight and Florida State pitcher Lacey Waldrop, who entered the game leading the ACC with a 1.20 ERA.

Waldrop pitched a solid game for the Seminoles, giving up only two earned runs. However, fielding errors on consecutive plays in the bottom of the second inning resulted in the Terps scoring two unearned runs in the inning to give them a 3-1 lead.

Maryland added an insurance run in the fifth inning when Lexi Carroll hit a double down the right field line, scoring Nikki Maier from first base.  Knight surrendered just one run on two hits and five walks in the game, improving her record to 26-11 on the season.

Maryland senior left fielder Vangie Galindo went three-for-seven on the day with two RBI’s. She now has 216 career hits, needing just four more hits to become Maryland’s new all-time hits leader. Jenny Belak currently owns that record with 219 hits in her Maryland career.

Senior Kathy McLaughlin went three-for-six on the afternoon with one RBI and two runs scored for Maryland.

The Terps have now won 13 of their past 15 games. With their win in the second game, the Terps solidified their hold on the fifth seed in the ACC Tournament, which will be held next Thursday through Saturday in Chapel Hill, N.C. Regardless of what happens in tomorrow’s game, the Terps’ standing within the ACC will not change.

Maryland will play its final game of the regular season against Florida State Sunday at 12 p.m. Maryland will honor all five of its seniors-Galindo, Knight, McLaughlin, Bree Hanafin and Sloane Van Meter-prior to the game.

Maryland softball picked up two easy wins over Howard on a rainy Wednesday night at Robert E. Taylor stadium.

The Terps got on the board early in game one; scoring four runs on just one hit in the first inning. Shannon Bustillos and Nikki Maier each had a home run and two RBI’s in the game, as Maryland went on to win game one 9-0.

Coming off being selected as ACC’s Pitcher of The Week, Kendra Knight pitched a no-hitter, striking out twelve and walking three in the five-inning game.

“Regardless of who you’re throwing against or who’s up in the box, to have a no- hitter against anybody is impressive,” said head coach Laura Watten. “She did really well.”

Knight also picked up the win in game two, allowing just one hit over three innings and striking out seven, leading Maryland to the 10-0 win. Howard was held to just one hit by the Terrapin pitching staff.

The Terps scored 10 runs on eight hits and received support from an array of different players. Candice Beards had three RBI’s on two hits, including a two-RBI single up the middle in the first inning and Maier brought in two runs with a double to left center in the third. Bustillos, Bree Hanafin and Vangie Galindo also picked up RBI’s in the second game of the double header.

After losing three games at Georgia Tech, Maryland has now won five in a row and has not allowed a run in three straight games.

Maier credits the Terps balanced attack to their recent success.

“I just feel like as a team when we come together and everybody shows up, that’s when we shine.”

The Maryland Terrapins got two much-needed wins at home on Wednesday over the George Mason Patriots. The Terps won the first game by a score of 3-1, and the second game by a score of 6-3.

The Patriots got things going in game one with an RBI double in the top of the third. The Terps responded with a sacrifice fly by Candice Beards to tie the game up in the bottom of the inning. Later in the game, pinch hitter Kelly Trimble smacked a clutch two-run home run to put the Terps up 3-1.

The Diamondback

Kendra night pitched a strong game allowing only one run on five hits with nine strikeouts.

Maryland struck first in game 2 with an RBI by Beards in the bottom of the first. The Patriots responded in the top of the fourth by scoring three runs. Maryland scored their next five funs with RBI’s by Bree Hanafin, Vangie Galindo, and a bases clearing RBI single by Nicki Maier.

Freshmen pitcher Kaitlyn Schmeiser pitched a complete game giving up seven hits with three strikeouts.

The Terps, who had lost six in a row before Wednesday’s doubleheader, were excited to be back to their winning ways.

“The girls worked through a lot of their stresses” said head coach Laura Watten. “They needed to get the feeling of success back”.

“We got used to losing, which is not a place we want to be in,” Schmeiser said. “We decided we were sick of it. “After the game the energy was so exciting. We forgot how much fun the game is when you win.”

The Terps have an important road trip coming up as they head to Atlanta to face Virginia Tech.

“We need to continue to get better”, explained Coach Watten, “We need to stay with what we did tonight, stay confident, stay focus on us and now who we are playing”.

Schmeiser stressed the importance of maintaining a positive attitude while approaching the upcoming series.

“We need to be electric. Excitemenet is always contagious. We need to remember to have fun”.

The Terps softball team went down for the third straight game to Virginia Tech on Sunday, falling 5-1 to the Hokies. Although they outhit their opponents, Maryland could never string together enough consecutive successful at-bats to put runs across the board, scoring their only run on a Bree Hanafin sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third.

Virginia Tech pitcher Jasmin Harrell was fantastic Sunday, pairing six strikeouts and no walks with her single earned run allowed in a complete game.  Her dominance was one problem for the Terps, as was a lack of the entire lineup producing.

Katie McLaughin and Nikki Maier each had three hits, combining for six out of the seven the team had as a whole.  Since everyone batting between them got out almost every single time they stepped up to the plate, the Terps couldn’t generate any sort of continuous offensive attack.

Maryland starter Kendra Knight pitched 6.2 innings and took the loss, dropping her record to 12-8.  She had eight walks to just two strikeouts, and allowed five earned runs to the Hokies.

This conference-play-opening series with Virginia Tech was a big one for the Terps, as they had the potential to get their 20th win of the season and really make a statement against one of the top teams in the ACC.  Instead, they now sit at 18-14, winless in conference play, and are in need of a spark in order to get their momentum back.

Their next games are a doubleheader at home against George Mason on April 4th, beginning at 5 p.m.

In an eventful Round Robin Wounded Warrior weekend for Maryland softball, the Terps improved to 16-6 overall after defeating Princeton and Kent State twice and Rhode Island once.

After defeating Kent State 2-1 on Saturday, the Terps continued their success by shutting out the Golden Flashes 5-0. Senior pitcher Kendra Knight threw a five-hit shutout and struck out eleven batters. With the win, Knight improved her record to 10-2 and lowered her ERA to 2.80.

The Terps capitalized on early mistakes from Kent State in the top of the second. After Kathy McLaughlin reached on an error and Lexi Carroll worked a walk, senior Sloane Van Meter, who was honored throughout the game as the senior of the day, notched the first Maryland hit of the afternoon by hitting an RBI double off the top of the center field wall. The Terps went on to score two more runs in the inning, after Nikki Maier walked with the bases loaded and Sloane Van Meter scored on a wild pitch.

Freshman catcher Shannon Bustillos hit the first pitch of the bottom of the fourth over the left field fence giving Maryland a 4-0 lead, and Van Meter, after leading off the inning with a double down the left field line, scored her second run of the day in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrific fly from Nikki Maier.

The Terps will next be in action when they take on Bryant University at the South Florida Invitational on Friday May 16^th at 4:30 p.m.
