Walked by this the other day, had to look twice before seeing the mailbox underneath all the plants. How symbolic of the world we live in today. These things used to be superstars, the ultimate hubs for communication and information sharing all over the world. But no longer. At least in the information-sharing sense, real mail is dwindling, rapidly becoming a relic of the past.. though in this case, at least we got some nice urban decoration. Let’s make sure we’re pointing these things out to our children and grandchildren while they’re still around, before museums and junkyards will be the only places left where we’ll find them. Just sayin’.

I’m not too thrilled with the front door, but overall…a great victory for me!

Sorry for the poor photos! My lighting is bad and I was trying to squeeze in a shot or two before the little one saw it. Nothing like making Christmas gifts for her right in front of her.

They were all high, and their faces glistened under the cheap florescence that twitched above them.

They were all high, and their faces glistened under the cheap florescence that twitched above them. Kyle slipped the glass pipe into his pant leg, feeling it fall to bottom and keeping his wrist on the bulge. Everyone else just kept their hands busy, rubbing and toiling over friction and finger. So how the fuck did you get a black eye? Seth asked Richard, keeping his chin tight to his chest like he does. Richard didn’t say anything, but moved his dirty tongue out of the clamp of chapped jowls as if he would start to speak, but didn’t.

He got it doing something dirty, that’s what. Kyle said behind his square glasses. It’s pretty swollen, when did it happen?

I think like a week ago, Richard said, standing up and tightening his jacket up to his neck. Kyle and Seth stood-up. It hurts like hell, but it gives me street cred’. Kyle and Seth did something horizontal with their lips, but never approached a laugh. It was an old joke.

Seth brought the garage door up and bit, so everyone could lay on their bellies and roll into the sunlight. Kyle went first, then Richard. The two squinted as the concrete that surrounded them in the coldesaque dispersed the sunlight at all angles. The garage door slapped shut, bending slightly in the middle.

We need to check out the Chaparral, Kyle said. It’s this dank forest behind the park – you know what, I think it’s owned by the park. Either way, no one goes back there and there’s this tiny-ass river that goes through it. It’s pretty fucking rad. Richard didn’t have anything to say, and after a bit of breathing billowed between the two, Seth came out. He was running with his short little arms clamped to his tee, panting and grinning.

What the fuck are we doing?! Seth asked all at once.

We’re gonna check out the Chaparral. Smoke the rest of the shit, and who knows, maybe run into some other rats who wanna match bowls. Maybe they got danker shit.

I don’t know, that flake you have is pretty good. It burns like a gold amber. Is that stuff from Ah-dee?

It is most certainly from Ah-dee, and Kyle’s glasses bobbed down to the bump in the middle of his long bridge. His left wrist still focusing and pressing on the pipe and bag. You know what? We can get their through your backyard.

We can?

That’s what I’m thinking. You know how your neighbor’s fence goes all the way to where it drops down to the road? Kyle used his long fingers to convey a cliff, and thinly legs traversing it’s rim. We can just shimmy along the fence and drop down. The Chaparral is just across the street and through a fire exit. I think it’s just another block from there.

We can smoke my shit along the way, Richard confessed.

We can.

Can we get to the back through the side, or are the vines still crazy-shit?

I think we can. If we can’t, then we can just go through the front again.

Next person to say ‘can,’ has to do the whole journey barefoot.

I ‘can,’ Kyle said, kicking off twelves and shoving them in a bush that grew around a mailbox.

You can use it to stand right next to the mailbox in stormwind and be able to use the AH without having to run in. Now I know that this sounds even lazier than usual for me, but when you make that mailbox-AH-mailbox run for the 200th time in a day, little things like this are what helps keep one sane.

First a little rant: I came home today and a neighbor had put a mailbox on my awaiting post. Thanks, but I reeeeeally don’t need your pity-mailbox. Or your pity lawn mowing. Or your pity pumpkin and chrysanthe–OMG I’m the charity case of the neighborhood.

Sigh. Well, it’s nice to have nice neighbors, but dudes, I was just trying to perfect the space invaders, convert my lawn to prairie, and protest the original invasion of Europeans and the commercialization of holidays in this country. Oh, and I’m hella lazy.

Well, fine. I replaced the charity-mailbox with the one I’d been working on: a very un-perfectly painted space invaders mailbox. I hope the unfinished design and uneven paint makes you crazy over in perfect-neighbor land. Choke on it!

p.s. firmly tongue-in-cheek. i like kindness. i like good neighbors. i like nice people. i was very nice and thanked them and all that.

p.p.s. i still like my geeky house numbers and guess what? space invaders topiary is on the brain. muhahahh!

First off I’ve started reading the book on corsets for the Women Unbound Challenge that I’m participating in. I’m enjoying it so for. I’ve got until exam week to finish it because it’s due on December 8th (the only way I could get my hands on it was to InterLibrary Loan it through my university). But it’s not that long and so I should finish it soon.

Second of all, I’m participating in the Book Bloggers’ Holiday Swap. If you’re interested in participating you should head over to the website because registration for this event closes tomorrow (November 12th). They have a great page for FAQ’s so if you’re curious hurry up and head on over there!

And finally I’m looking for challenges to participate in for 2010 if you know of one that you’re participating in ad I should check out (excluding “Fall into Reading” and “Women Unbound” – because I’m participating in both) please leave a comment. Thanks!

I’m from Seattle originally but for the past 10 years I’ve lived in So Cal and the Southeast. Sun is now my “thing”. The turn in the weather this last week and a half is giving me SAD I think! So, to perk myself up I’m posting my favorite picture from this summer.

I was walking down Pac Hwy toward my local library and I saw the most amazing thing: a bush of fully blooming hydrangeas with a random rusty mailbox poking through the blooms… but what really made it strange was that the bush and mailbox are situated in front of a vacant lot with a fence around it. No house or building in sight.

I thought it was lovely and I snapped it on my camera phone so I could remember how sweet and random it was when I most needed it. Winter.

That time is upon us. I sometimes wish I could skip all this cold and dark and straight to the sweet spot of summer… but alas, I have no time warping capabilities. I guess I have to live through it and make lots of sweaters!

Now my regular readers will know exactly which Post Office I am talking about. Not the one close to work where the polite, pleasant, nice postal ladies work. No Chance!!!

It was this one, in the city centre.

Yes, it was the dreaded Margaret Post Office!!!

I walked up to the counter & there was a Postal Man serving the only customer there. No-one else in sight. “Great” I thought, “He will finish serving her & then he will serve me”.

Gullible Fool that I am…

Suddenly, without warning, Margaret appeared from behind the office dividing wall sending a chill down my spine & said to me “May I help you?”

Margaret: (With a smile) “Yes, now I remember, I thought you looked familiar”

She went & got the mail, gave it to me…

No signature required, no obligatory checking of ID, no hoops to jump through, no cracking of whips or demanding the ransom of my 1st born in exchange for the mail. Unbelievable…

That was it, she handed the mail over & said “See you later” with a pleasant voice & a smile.

I left somewhat surprised, almost disappointed, at how easily she parted with the mail. I was somehow expecting more from her…

Now my regular readers will know exactly which Post Office I am talking about. Not the one close to work where the polite, pleasant, nice postal ladies work. No Chance!!!

It was this one, in the city centre.

Yes, it was the dreaded Margaret Post Office!!!

If you are not familiar with the Margaret Postal Saga CLICK HERE for the links to all the episodes of my week in hell…

As the Boss was only away for one day he hadn’t bothered to leave the mailbox key. I therefore had only one choice. Enter the Temple Of Doom & risk coming face to face with the fearsome Postal Nazi.

I dreaded what may occur next, I wanted to scream & run.

Me: “Can I collect the mail for mailbox 876 please?”

Margaret: “Who is it for?”

Me: “Rexel”

She was looking at me in a weird unsettling kinda way.

Margaret: “What’s your name?"

Me: “Tony”

Margaret: (Still looking at me weirdly) “Have we done this before?”

Me: “Yes, it turned into a week long saga over having the correct paperwork…”

Margaret: (With a smile) “Yes, now I remember, I thought you looked familiar”

She went & got the mail, gave it to me…

No signature required, no obligatory checking of ID, no hoops to jump through, no cracking of whips or demanding the ransom of my 1st born in exchange for the mail. Unbelievable…

That was it, she handed the mail over & said “See you later” with a pleasant voice & a smile.

I left somewhat surprised, almost disappointed, at how easily she parted with the mail. I was somehow expecting more from her…

Had something happened since my last visit? Something that had somehow softened her heart???

I guess I will never know….
