Last weekend we loaded in the theatre. There is something so exciting when the theatre manager says, “go for it! You’re the Main Stage.” I am getting excited as all the last details gel together.
I think back 4 months…how time flew, but it is simply amazing what we have done with the time. WHAT AN AMAZING CAST! LOVE THEM! Then again I have no bias.

Well, anyway back to work on the show…

2. Sleep with all valuables under your pillow. Our friend Shell got her purse robbed from her tent whilst she was asleep in it and POTENTIALLY EVEN WORSE, my massive throne-esque camping chair got nicked! It was such a good chair too, cup-holders and everything! I slept with one eye open for the rest of the festival…

3. I am too small to be at the very front of the barrier for The Maccabees. CRUSHED.

4. Always beware of the one-hour gap between Patrick Wolf and Me You At Six. Because Them Crooked Vultures WILL perform a secet gig and you WILL miss it.

5. Fame has it’s price. And Kings of Leon found out the hard way throwing a massive stress when it dawned on them that the majority of their crowd were now 15-year-old scenesters, drunk off one WKD, there to see Sex on Fire and Use Somebody. In fact, to quote one young lad there on the SUNDAY NIGHT; “I’ve only seen Kings of Leon and Enter Shikari!” £175 well spent then…

6. Wind at the Main Stage is your worst enemy. Fall Out Boy never stood a chance on Friday afternoon, where rumour had it that the effects of some hurricane over in America were drowning out little Patrick Stump’s vocals. Poor Patrick.

7. I am no longer an Arctic Monkeys fan. Dull, dull, dull.

8. It is a very ‘young’ festival. I mean, of course this is a massive generalisation, but I didn’t half feel old, continually wishing I could rewind 5 years and take just that little bit more joy from shouting “BOLLOCKS” with a sea of a few thousand people and hugging sweaty men.

9. You’ll spend a good couple of hours not desperately wanting to see anyone, then 3 bands you love will all clash. Golden Silvers, Crystal Castles and Yeah Yeah Yeahs on Sunday evening. Yowch.

10. That liquid that hits you in the back of the neck at 10pm is never going to be a lukewarm cup of coffee…

All of this said, I had the most amazing time. Special commendations to:

• Yeah Yeah Yeahs for their accoustic performance of Maps. Beautiful.
• You Me At Six for the best performance of the weekend, despite the fact I knew NONE of their songs. It really says something when hearing a band makes you get up off the grass outside the tent to come in and watch. They were absolutely fabulous, completely hitting the nail on the head with clever marketing by writing songs which smack their teenage fans right in the face. And I guess it helps that the lead singer is FIT in real life.
• The Rakes for an incredible setlist: Retreat, 22 Grand Job, The Light From Your Mac, Strasbourg, The World Was A Mess But His Hair Was Pefect, 1989, We Danced Together, Open Book…
• Friendly Fires for deciding that Ed Macfarlane should dance more on stage! At the NME Awards Tour this year the whole band was a little static, but it was all-change for Reading! The boy was bustin’ moves and it was totally infectious!
• Passion Pit, for not spinning out exactly what’s on the CD but remixing their biggest songs, providing something that was still recognisable for their (relatively) small following yet different and tailor-made for the festival. A+ for effort.
• The Maccabees. Worth every elbow in the face and stamp on the foot.

I await next years festival with huuuuu-awwwge anticipation!

Uite ca, chiar a meritat sa merg la Peninsula macar o zi. Chiar daca am picat acolo numa pentru ziua de Duminica a meritat toti banii. Initial eram 2 care ne-am trezit saptamana trecuta miercuri sa ne cumparam bilete, sambata am agatat inca pe cineva iar Duminica in gara eram deja 4 . O sa incerc sa pun cateva poze azi sa vedeti ce nebunie a fost acolo, in mare am stat pe strand apoi ne-am mutat la o terasa langa scena de mai sus. Cred ca am nimerit unul dintre cele mai bune locuri de pe terasa chiar daca ne-au tot mutat pe acolo dar spre mirarea mea dupa ce am ocupat locul au inceput sa apara si cunostintele , ajungand la sfarsit sa fim o trupa imensa .  Eu sincer m-am dus pentru The Prodigy, dar pe langa asta am mai prins Vita de Vie, Freestylers (trupa asta e bestiala :X ) si Tankcsapda. Iar cand au urcat cei de la The Prodigy ne-am mutat in fata de tot…. adica cat sa putut dar cred ca am prins unul din cele mai bune locuri. Chiar daca acum ma doare fiecare parte a corpului (la cate lovituri am luat de la cei din jurul meu), si am pierdut capaul de la obiectiv in timpul concertului iar cineva mi-a ciordit un pachet de tigari tot ma bucur ca am fost acolo. Tin sa mentionez ca dupa concert nu am mai avut voce :| am cantat cat am putut eu de mult, fiindca a fost vorba de o trupa cu care am crescut eu pe vremuri Momentan inca ma mai omora un somn asa ca o sa mai revin cu poze in acest post.

A fost o adevarata nebunie duminica noapte la Festivalul Peninsula, de la Targu Mures. The Prodigy a tinut un show de aproape o ora, in care fanii s-au dezlantuit. Cei peste 20.000 de petrecareti au dansat incontinuu, iar deasupra publicului s-a ridicat un nor de praf de zeci de metri.

Cei de la Prodigy nu au dat nicio clipa de repaus publicului. Spectatorii au dansat in continuu pe ritmurile melodiilor binecunoscute in intreaga lume. Asa ca, la finalul concertului, fanii au plecat extenuati, dar entuziasti.

Audio Quantize can instantly fix or adjust the timing of an entire performance by aligning notes and beats to a musical grid with a single menu selection. Varispeed provides the ability to slow down and then speed up an entire multi-track production to help record challenging parts. Flex Time also enables recorded tracks to be moved between different Logic projects and matched together, even if they were performed at different tempos. It has been over a week since my last post, which is partly due to the fact that I was at the Oregon Country Fair. It was probably the longest period of time that my computer spent actually off. It’s nice to get away from technology for a while. OCF always reminds me of living simple and carefree. Getting back into the real world afterwards is always a bit disappointing and stressful. That may have something to do with why I haven’t posted until now. I may go into detail about my Fair experience this year in this post, or I may not. There are just a lot of personal feelings and emotions that I am hesitant to share. As most of you who know me know, I am a rather introverted person—a clam, if you will.

I am continuing this post after a few days of letting it sit with only the text above this line.

I’ve kinda lost the magic of OCF once again, as expected. I don’t know how this keeps happening. It is now just a collection of lovely (and bittersweet) memories that continue to lose their tangibility. Well, while I still have them, I might as well explain the above vagueness.

On the second day of Fair, I went out to see the first show of the day at Main stage, which was a group who are friends with some of the people who work in the booth with me. The Shook Twins, to be specific. The band currently consists of these two young women who, as stated, are twins, and a couple of guys, one of which plays the cello, and the other plays the bass. They are quite something. Anyway, while I was there, a very pretty hippie girl caught my eye. She was up front dancing and seemed to know the words. I’m not sure it what it was about her that was so alluring, but she just was something to see. She wasn’t necessarily remarkable, but she stood out to me. She is probably one of the only people I have ever seen with blond dreadlocks who I have been attracted to. Something about her eyes really amazed me too.

I didn’t think too much of it at that point.

However, the next day (Sunday), she came to our booth and ordered a fruit salad. I was mildly pleased, but not terribly surprised. Just about then, the rain (which had been steadily getting worse) began to pour. And did it. So much so that she was forced to take shelter in our booth. This is when I really began to take an interest. Here she was, this amazingly attractive hippie girl, just leaning on one of our counters, eating her fruit salad with her hands as she watched the rain. Of course I, being who I am, made no immediate move to approach her in any way. It wasn’t until a little while later when she asked who was playing at Main stage that day (we can always hear the shows from our booth, being about 50 yards away) that I talked to her. I mentioned that I could grab the Peach Pit (the OCF paper/schedule thing), did so, and we ended up looking at the shows. We exchanged a few more words before I got distracted by the water pooling on the plastic covering the booth and had to address that. She hung around for a little while longer, during which we exchanged a couple smiles, but then disappeared at one point.

Later that day (it was still raining a couple hours later), I was standing out at the front of our booth, considering wandering into the mud, when she passed by. We greeted each other and I explained that I was just about ready to put on some swim shorts and venture out into the mud. Again, a few more words were said, and then she headed off again.

A little while later, I did in fact change and went out to Main stage to listen to the performers, who happened to be Heavyweight Dub Champion and were the first electronic band to perform at the Country Fair. They were rather cool. I went out and stood in the (now light) rain and watched. As I was watching, my eyes came across this girl again, dancing out in the crowd. She eventually saw me too and smiled. At this point, I took off the jacket I was wearing and began to dance a little. This is very strange behavior for me, since I rarely dance, but I guess it was just something to do with this girl that got me to come out of my shell a little. Eventually, I began to dance in earnest (in the rain!) and really enjoy it. At some point, she actually wandered over and commented on the fact that I had actually ventured out finally and began to dance nearby. Of course, this made me a bit nervous because I have absolutely no idea how to approach women, let alone on a dance floor (well, mud field, in this case). I ended up kinda just dancing in place and watching her (not to stalker-like, I hope) as she danced. I really just wanted to go over and dance with her, but couldn’t get up the courage. Eventually, she moved away to join her friends again. I continued to dance until the show finally finished (it was the last of the day) and the crowd dispersed.

As it was clearing, she actually waved at me across the field, and I waved back. This made me very happy. Unfortunately, this is basically the end of it. I could probably have gone and asked her her name (I really wish I had), but again, it didn’t happen. [insert heavy sigh here]

Anyway, I didn’t see her at all the next day and haven’t since. All I can hope for is that I see her next year again.

**Update: I was finally able to find a picture of her, which makes me feel both excited and slightly stalker-ish. Here is the link again in case you didn’t see it the first time. All I’m really asking is to find out her name.

Well, slightly depressing things aside, I really enjoyed Fair again this year, especially Sunday night when I visited the Ritz. Of course, there were tons of people there due to the cold, mud, and rain, so that the place was packed. The sauna was almost full to max most of the time, but I still was able to go between the sauna, the cold shower, the fire and the sauna again about three times, which was amazing. [insert very satisfied sigh here]

So yeah, that was my Fair this year. I even finally gave Jason Webley a hug and offered him a few scant words. It was satisfying.

In other news, I started my ecology class today (well, yesterday, now), which I think is going to be pretty fun. We’re going to Mt. Pisgah today for a couple hours. I’m looking forward to it. Also, sleep is in order.

Zaterdag vier juli 2009. De dag van de TMF Awards. Perskaarten geregeld zodat we op de website aandacht kunnen besteden aan deze happening. Samen met mijn vriendje op naar Rotterdam. Eenmaal over de Erasmusbrug zien we een enorme mensenmassa staan. Aha, we zijn er. De TMF Awards zijn voor het eerst sinds tijden uitverkocht en dat is te zien. Bij de ingang krijgen we allebei netjes een polsbandje om. Met dit bandje hebben we toegang tot alle (voor het publiek) verborgen ruimtes.

Eenmaal op het terrein blijkt dat er drie podia zijn; het ‘main stage’ met de grote artiesten, ‘pure stage’ met hip-hop en ‘dance stage’ met dance muziek. Met ons polsbandje lopen we zo langs alle hekken door naar de persruimte. Daar kunnen wewat drinken en er staan kleine hapjes. In deze zelfde, benauwde, ruimte zullen de sterren van vandaag langskomen voor een ‘photo call’. Dit is een moment voor de pers om de artiesten van dichtbij te fotograveren en kort een vraag te stellen. Het eerste slachtoffer wat naar binnen moet is Ilse de Lange. Ze poseert met haar net gewonnen award. Ook ik klik vrolijk mee. Na een paar minuten is het alweer klaar voor Ilse en verdwijnt ze.

We besluiten eens bij het podium te kijken, het main stage. De artiesten op de kleinere podia zijn vrijwel onbekend voor ons. Als we aan komen lopen is Van Velzen net bezig met zijn optreden. We gaan eens uittesten hoe ver we kunnen komen met het posbandje. We mogen zo langs de beveiliging lopen. We komen uit voor de dranghekken en recht voor het podium. Omdat er allemaal mannelijke fotografen vooraan staan, val ik al snel op. Als vrouwelijk ‘fotografe’ is het simpel om de mannelijke artiesten jouw kant op te laten kijken. Daarbij had ik ee klein digitaal cameraatje en geen mega telelens.

Thijs en ik vermaken ons heel de dag prima. We rennen van hot naar her, van persruimte naar main stage en weer terug. Onwijs mooie foto’s gemaakt die uiteindelijk op de website van Girlz! terecht zijn gekomen. Helemaal onderaan de foto’s van deze dag, een filmpje en de uiteindelijke websitetekst.

De Black Eyed Peas zijn DE grote publiekstrekker vandaag. Zelf vind ik het veel toffer dat N.E.R.D er is, maar dat is persoonlijk . De Peas hebben om 19:05 een photo call in de persruimte. Wij staan dus netjes om 19:00 klaar. We staan met zo’n vijftig fotograven te wachten en vast te dringen om het beste plekje. Natuurlijk doe ik gewoon keihard mee met duwen. En gelukkig, ik ben niet al te lang dus heb mijzelf al snel vooraan geplaatst. Dit tot ergenis van de wat ‘bekendere’ fotograven. Ik zal geen namen noemen, maar heb blauwe plekken overgehouden aan dit grapje. De Black Eyed Peas laten drie kwartier op zich wachten en ein-de-lijk, om 19:50 komen ze aangelopen. Ze blijven een minuut of drie staan en zijn dan weer net zo snel verdwenen als dat ze gekomen zijn. Toch is het gelukt om mooie plaatjes te schieten van dit viertal. Het volgende filmpje laat zien wat een gekkenhuis zo’n ‘photo call’ is. Te bedenken dat elk flitsje 1 fototoestel is!

De B.E.P. treden om 21:00 op. Dit is de belangrijkste show van deze TMF Awards en dus willen we een goed plekje vooraan bij het podium. Maar dan gebeurt het. Tijdens N.E.R.D zijn een hoop meiden uit het publiek flauwgevallen. Daarom is het ineens wat lastiger om vooraan te komen. De beveiliging laat mij niet door. Ik mag aan de zijkant van het podium blijven staan. De reden van deze weigering is mijn camera. Die zou niet professioneel genoeg zijn. Is ‘ie natuurlijk ook niet. Maar mooie foto’s kan ik er wel mee maken! De hele dag sta ik al vooraan bij het podium en nu zou het toch gebeuren dat ik er niet door mag! Ik reageer vrij fel tegen meneer de beveiliger en natuurlijk wordt dit me niet in dank afgenomen. Ik mag niet vooraan staan, ‘nee, is nee’.

Ik ga dus pissig voor het hek zitten, kijk naast me en zowaar zit Joop van Tellingen daar. Hij moest hier zijn voor opnames van een TV-programma waar hij aan meedoet (Xperience, jonge, bijna professionals kunnen een stage winnen bij een bekend persoon). Hij maakt geen aanstalten tot het maken van foto’s. De Peas beginnen toch echt bijna. Ik raak met hem aan de praat en het is eigenlijk een hele aardige man. De Peas beginnen en ik hoor mezef vragen of Joop niet even foto’s voor mij kan gaan maken. Hij twijfelt, zegt eerst ‘nee’. Ineens staat hij op en zegt ‘Nou meid, geef op die camera!’. De bekende paparazzo loopt met zijn eigen telelens in de hand en mijn cameraatje in zijn broekzak langs de beveiliging. Ik zie hem voor het podium staan met mijn cameraatje in zijn handen. Geen gezicht natuurlijk omdat hij zijn telelens gewoon om zijn schouder heeft hangen! Hij neemt zijn tijd, twee liedjes lang staat hij druk te fotograveren. Dan komt hij terug. Ik straal van oor tot oor! Wat lief dat hij me geholpen heeft! Spontaan maak ik een foto van ons samen. I know we’ve shared a lot about vans breaking down, tires being blown, as well as thousands of dollars of repairs on our van, but I did want to point out that through out all this, God has provided and has given us much faith to be on the road!  He is so good and it is a fact that He will provide for all our needs.  Here’s some examples…

- On Tuesday, someone felt compelled to donate a lot of money towards the band… The person had NO idea that we were just hit with a hefty bill to fix our van!  He told us God had put it on his family’s heart to give and that he did.  Wow.  We were nearly in tears by the generosity!

- Thursday morning we arrive to Creation Festival 09 and played on the amazing Fringe Stage! First time playing there. It was a blast to play for a hometown festival where we attended many times!  Here’s a pic from the show:

Playing the Fringe was a highlight in itself. We loved meeting and hanging with so many new friends. This had been a dream for a long time to play here.

- Friday morning: 9:33 AM.  9 missed calls. 1 text message.

I’m in bed at home and see that some producers from Creation Festival have called me numerous times and texted me.  We had just come home the night before after playing the Fringe Stage and enjoyed sleeping in our own bed.  I quickly realize that all the calls can only mean ONE THING:  Creation needs a band to fill in and they wanted Reilly!

I call up Creation and it’s true. Pillar can’t make their slot on the Main Stage at 2 PM.  They want us to play…  Note we are 3 1/2 hours away and we have 4 hours before the slot… it takes up a few seconds to decide and I call the band up and we get in our cars and DRIVE.

Each band member drove separately and we arrived at 1:35 PM.  We load in, soundcheck from 1:45-2:00, and then play our first Creation Main STage slot ever…  Talk about getting promoted from Fringe to Main Stage… That’s probably the fastest that’s ever happened!!

God is good and we’re enjoying seeing Him open up doors for us.  There’s no doubt about it.  See you on the road!

I just finished an eventful weekend at the Isle of Wight Festival. The weather was great and my viewpoint was unique. I sailed up the Medina River from Cowes, moored up and then took my little rubber dinghy all the way to the festival where I tied up to a bigger boat, settled back and enjoyed the gigs.

The main stage is right next to the river, so the big screen is clearly visible and the sound powerful. Although it probably wasn’t as good as being inside the compound, it was certainly more comfortable! I didn’t envy the hardy souls who were swimming fully clothed (beers in hand) from the other side of the river, trying to sneek in, only to be turned back by security and having to swim back to the other side. There were other equally unsuccessful, albeit drier attempts to break in, such as the man paddling by on a windsurfer.

My favourites were more of my era, like Simple Minds, the Prodigy and Neil Young, although there were plently of other great acts. Below you can see my view of The View performing on the second day. The Stereophonics were good in the evening.

The Red Arrows came by for a spectacular aerobatics display to make the day perfect, despite the fact that I didn’t get to play on stage myself. Maybe next year…
