Robert looked in the mirror. Makeover, new ID, done and dusted. Professor Robert Langford, semiotics

Robert looked in the mirror. Makeover, new ID, done and dusted.

Professor Robert Langford, semiotics expert, black Thomas Pink shirt, Blancpain Villeret watch, grey Harris tweed sports jacket, black Calvin Klein jeans, Crockett and Jones Chelsea boots, currently hanging out in Gotham City.

Watching CNN breaking news of a suitcase nuke right where I spent this morning with Katherine.

Synchronicity? Coincidence? Law of Attraction?

“The president will address the nation in thirty minutes.”

“Is that thing real?” asked Trylyan.

“Could be. The Russians did lose a lot of these once.” said Sarayu.

“Alphonse, what do you think?”

“Technically possible, but very expensive. Who would want to blow up Washington?”

“Some terrorist group?”

“They would have to be very well funded, and have watertight security.”

They all looked at the screen.

None of them had a clue.

Robert had a knot in his belly. What was all this improbability he seemed to be attracting?

“Your improbability level is down to 70% since your makeover.” Trylyan had told him.

Mickey Mouse was worth ten per cent.

Robert tried hard to process the day’s events, searching for a thread that would bring everything into focus.

He could not find one.

“The FBI is setting up a mobile X-Ray scan.” said the CNN reporter. “Soon we will know if this thing is for real.”

Let’s hope not.

Will Robert find the missing thread?

Will his new boots reduce his improbabilty level?

Will the mice come to the rescue?

I spent Tuesday and Wednesday de-wallpapering my kitchen. My wonderful Mom did come and help on Tue

I spent Tuesday and Wednesday de-wallpapering my kitchen. My wonderful Mom did come and help on Tuesday but I finished it off on Wednesday. I haven’t removed wallpaper in about four years and I don’t plan to do it for at least another four. It sucks.

But mine came off rather easy. Had to use some elbow grease but for the most part, the project has gone smoothly so far. Now I need to spackle and sand which I am NOT looking forward to. At all. I’m on the computer instead of working in the kitchen. But I have to get that part done this weekend. I have to. Because painting is the easiest part. And it will still suck. I hate home projects. Love the “after”, loathe the “doing”.

So here is how the kitchen looks now:

And it looks worse than it did before. Awesome. Even more of a reason I should get my rear in gear and go work. It really does feel like it should be a “spend the day in pajamas and eat popcorn for lunch” kind of day.

I don’t know how you Black Friday shoppers wake up so friggin early to drop bows with strangers. I just don’t have any kind of spunk in me right now.

You’re stupid. You’ve admitted it, and now you’re seeking help. I want to congratu

You’re stupid. You’ve admitted it, and now you’re seeking help. I want to congratulate you! That’s the first step towards making your stupid life better.
First thing’s first though; you are stupid and will be forever. This book will not change that. This book will however, mask your stupidity from the rest of the world and may lead to promotions, dating, new job opportunities, more friends, and definitely more confidence!
It’s not easy to fool people when you’re stupid. Especially people who aren’t stupid. Let’s call this type of people “Smart” people, shall we? Smart people are very quick to pick up on the fact that you’re stupid. You’ve got to be perfect from the beginning around them, or else they will see you as a sheep in wolf’s clothing. That’s an example of a “smart” idea: a truncated and intentionally-reversed extended metaphor using the structure of a simile. You scoffed at things like this in school, but metaphors, similes, and other clever literary devices are a fundamental part of smart people conversation. Similes and metaphors are discussed in detail later in this book, so we won’t worry about them now.
Instead, what we’ll focus on now is the face you made after reading that sentence about the wolf and the sheep. You scrunched your nose tightly and rolled your eyes around in the hopes that your brain would explain why I was talking about animals. If you are smarter, but still stupid, you waited to make the face until I started talking about all that simile and metaphor stuff. This frowny-eye-rolling is a common face that stupid people make when presented with something that bores them or something they don’t understand. This book is about fixing stupid habits just like that face!
Most of the stupid habits you have are based on your stupid instincts. Right now, I want you to close your mouth, and breathe through your nose. TRUST ME, you won’t suffocate! Go ahead and try it. You see? Now you know you can trust me.
It’s not necessary to understand WHY I want you to do the things I want you to do. The important thing is that you DO them and practice them, over and over, for the rest of your life. Most of these things will be difficult. Breathing through your nose alone will take years for you to master. You currently breathe through your mouth because the “instinct” part of your brain is looking out for your survival. This is because the cognitive or “thinking” part of your brain isn’t capable of making good decisions. Stupid people like yourself are prone to doing things directly opposed to your own survival. For instance, I’m sure you’ve found yourself at one time or another in a single-person competition for stuffing the most miniature marshmallows into your nose to see how many will fit. Since this is literally smothering yourself for no reason, your brain makes you breathe out of your mouth, since it figures you’ll live longer that way.
Don’t worry! You will still be able to indulge all of your fun, stupid impulses. I’ll simply teach you how to save them for “private time”, or “stupid friend hang-out time.” when you’re around other people as stupid, or more stupid, than you are. This book is full of helpful, good habits like “stupid friend hang-out time”. However, every habit will take practice to master, so I want you to make a promise with me.
Go ahead and read this out loud: “I promise that I will follow the instructions in this book. I promise that I will practice every day, and that I won’t give up, no matter how frustrating it is for my stupid brain. Sincerely, me!”
There. You’ve just made a promise to both you and I. You said it out loud, so you have to stick to it. It’s too late to turn back now, which is wonderful, because you’re going to have a great new life! (if you think you and I are the same person, or opposite people from when this introduction began, you’re still reading out loud. Please stop reading out loud.)
To create a sense of familiarity, which will subconsciously compel you to finish the rest of the chapters through recognition, despite your short attention span, Just for fun, I’ll give you a brief overview of the topics we will cover in-depth during the rest of this guide.
The first half of this book is all about breaking down and hiding the stupid things you do:
Chapter 1 is what you’re reading right now.
In chapter 2, I will tell you tricks to keep your stupid life separate from your new smart life. This will be an ongoing process. You will learn to enjoy top 40 music and Michael Bay movies secretly while alone or with a few select stupid friends, instead of loudly and in front of everyone.
In chapter 3, I’ll teach you how to shut your mouth before it says the stupid thing you just thought. You’ll learn to use silence with making faces to pretend that you’re deep in thought.
The second half of this book is all about the tricks you can use to pretend you’re smart:
In chapter 4, we’ll reread the first half of the book, because you’ll have skipped ahead, thinking you didn’t need to learn those techniques and “do homework from a stupid book”.
In chapter 5, you get a makeover! As fun as it seems, this will actually be one of the hardest sections of the book, and one of the most important. You will learn to dress in a “nerd costume” for the rest of your life. Calm down! Stop wrinkling your face, stop chewing your lip, quit punching whatever you’re punching, and listen up. You know deep down that “nerds” are the very smartest of smart people. The benefit of looking like a nerd is that smart people will assume you are socially awkward instead of stupid and will therefore more readily ignore whenever you slip up and do stupid things.
In chapter 6, I’ll discuss using props to appear smart. We will discuss scavenging techniques for smart props, including making habits for success. You’ll learn how to search local coffee shops every morning for partially-completed crossword puzzles to spend the rest of the day pretending to fill out. Tips like this will give silent proof of your “smarts” when people might otherwise see through your smart costume.
In chapter 7, I’ll help you get into the habit of saying smart things and inventing opinions. It DOESN’T MATTER what your opinions are. The only important thing is to NEVER CHANGE YOUR MIND about your opinions. You’ll learn to be condescending about other people’s opinions. I’ll even teach you phrases to use if you get into hot water with someone such as “I suppose we’ll just have to agree to disagree!” You’ll also learn to memorize a single generic quote to use at parties and whenever you want to impress someone of the opposite sex.
The third half of this book is all about using your newfound techniques to SECURE your future:
In chapter 8, I’ll give you a lie detector test to be sure you’ve read every chapter thoroughly. If not, i’ll remind you that you made a promise to me, and make you go back and read what you skipped.
In chapter 9, I’ll teach you about material investments. It’s important to invest in “things” and “stuff” that will make you appear smart for the rest of your life: a modestly large house, a slightly above-average car, and many more material things. Your stupid thinking is right in assuming the more things you own, the better; but you have to own the RIGHT KINDS of things! Filling your house with the right long-term props is very important. You’ll learn about chess and backgammon boards. You’ll check prices on pianos and expensive-looking (but not extravagant!) artwork.
In chapter 10, you’ll hire an accountant and do EXACTLY what they tell you do with your money. I’ll tell you briefly what a saving account is and why it’s better not to run out and spend every paycheck immediately on liquor and clubbing. Even though you won’t understand right away why this is bad; when you see how savings and investments lead to MORE liquor, you’ll be happy you listened.
In chapter 11, you’ll invent a new category of people you can look down on for the rest of your life, like “Liberal Elites” or “Right Wing Fascists”. This is a prime time to hire a writer to write a book with your name on it! Tell everyone you wrote the book. This is key.
In our last chapter, chapter 12, you’ll make the most important investment in your future; tricking a beautiful INTELLIGENT person into loving and marrying you. This will be the most difficult thing you will EVER do and it will take all the resources you’ve built and all the techniques you’ve learned. You will master keeping your stupid life and your smart life separate by passing off your stupidity once and for all as something else. We will discuss faking Asperger’s Syndrome, Social Anxiety Disorder, and the like.
By the end of this book, you will be a new person; a person you’ve invented. You will be successful beyond belief, and you’ll have someone who loves you for the rest of your life.
Does this sound too good to be true? Well guess what? I’M A STUPID JUST LIKE YOU! Or at least, I used to be. But following my own system, I’ve made a wonderful, explosive new life as a SMART! I’m CEO of my own Fortune 500 company, I have a syndicated talk radio show, I’m married to a supermodel, I live in a mansion in Beverly Hills, and I have three somewhat intelligent children. I’m sure you don’t believe me, but it’s true. All the “smart” phrases I’ve used in this book were painfully constructed over several years using a dictionary, a smart writer friend, and the help of my brilliant wife. My system worked for me! IT WILL WORK FOR YOU!!!

Today marks the beginning of my stay-cation (I totally ripped the word off from my friend Natalie

Today marks the beginning of my stay-cation (I totally ripped the word off from my friend Natalie…thanks Natalie!). And I decided that I want to do something I’ve been wanting to do since I’ve moved into my house: take down the wallpaper in the kitchen.

It isn’t “ugly” but here’s the thing - I hate wallpaper. It’s repetitive, loud and is only useful when playing Sims because it makes your darn Sims happy. It does not make me happy. And you can’t put holes in it. Because they stay there forever. That didn’t stop the previous owner though. Nope. We have wallpaper in a couple of other places in the house, but I can live with those. I cannot live with these green and maroon ivy leaves any longer. They must go.

Meet my kitchen.

It’s cute. It’s cozy [which is just another way of saying cramped]. It’s useful. But I hate the wallpaper. I really don’t like the honey oak cabinets either but that’s way too much commitment right now. Or the fact that there’s a laminent backsplash around the entire length of the cabinets. But again, too much commitment. So the plan for this week is to remove the wallpaper, spackle the areas I messed up and prime. And prime and prime and prime. Because I’ve realized there is zero primer under all this wallpaper. Dammit.

I hope this goes smoothly. I really really hope this goes quickly. I hope I don’t take out too many chunks of the wall. Because I really need this. I need solid color. I need my cabinets to look less “honey”. I’m so frickin needy today.

Oh – and Happy Birthday, Nicole! Hope the Hoosier Life is treating you well!

This is an assignment for my Writing for Media class. It was supposed to be a feature… Is Benn

This is an assignment for my Writing for Media class. It was supposed to be a feature…

Is Benny in need of a makeover?

–The mascot’s more recent look has him still scaring children

Parents clamoring for photos as they thrust screaming, crying children into the furry arms of a six-foot tall, scowling, squinting Beaver with its head alone nearly as large as the child itself. “It’s horrible,” winces the peppy and anonymous Oregon State student that brings its mascot to life.

Since Benny the Beaver, Oregon State University’s mascot, transitioned from a happy and gentle beaver to the ‘angry’ beaver in 2001, many have been asking if he’s too angry for the children that previously adored him.

“The size of [Benny's] head is bigger than it has ever been,” says the anonymous student who dons the Benny suit each game day. “The eyes have also been made more intimidating and mean.”

According to a 2005 story by Daily Barometer reporters Jeff Goodwin and A.D. Nealon, Benny’s head was damaged on the plane ride back from that year’s Insight Bowl. Instead of simply fixing the head, the athletic department decided to redesign and update the look because, in the words of Steve Fenk, interim director of sports information for Oregon State, “the old Benny was scaring children.”

The 2005 redesign may have helped, but children still seem to be frightened of the oversized, loveable buffoon we call Benny.

“I can see his eyes being meaner [than past Benny's],” says Marianne Egan, an Apparel Design Instructor in the College of Design and Human Environment. “Children notice the eyes first.” She recommends replacing them with “pretty, big eyes with eyelashes.”

This discussion no doubt brings up the issue of who Benny, or all mascots for that matter, are made for. Is he made for kids, rabid fans, or both?

A good mascot, according to the mascot manufacturer Street Characters, the world’s leading mascot creator and Benny’s creator, is cute and cuddly and must be especially good with children. They should represent the university and its sports teams while being approachable and fun for children.

“[Benny the Beaver's] primary purpose is for the kids,” says Edison Gold, a junior in Exercise and Sports Science. “The adults are there for the game. Kids will get bored, and what Benny does is keep them interested. If Benny wasn’t there the adults wouldn’t be affected.”

Not all students feel the same way about Benny.

Taylor Eastburn, a junior in Business, feels that Benny is geared more towards sports fanatics and “people our age. Kids get scared by a lot of stuff. I don’t think that enough kids get scared by Benny to change how he looks.”

Oregon State isn’t the first university to struggle with how to find the balance between cuddly child-magnet and intimidation in its mascot.

According to a 2008 Washington Post article by Susan Kinzie, George Mason University has had the opposite problem. Children flock mercilessly to their wacky green and monster-ish mascot “Gunston,” but older students and alumni have called for his axing due to a lack of intimidation.

It all may be just simply a case of ‘the grass is greener.’ “They should change him,” says Gold of Benny the Beaver. “Make the head cute and funny. The image is trying to look fierce, but it’s just not there.”

Gold may have a point. If one scans the website of Street Characters, the previously-mentioned mascot manufacturer, one would find tips and advice for interacting with children. From what type of mascot kids would rather hug, to the design of a suit that would allow movement for the necessary activities of “shaking hands and hugging kids.”

Oregon State isn’t the only university to follow the advice of Street Characters. New Mexico State University has also had a notable controversy concerning children’s reactions to their mascot.

According to the 2005 Fox News article “N.M. State’s ‘Pistol Pete’ Losing Pistol”, New Mexico State’s mascot Pistol Pete was stripped of the name ‘Pistol’ and had his gun traded in for a lasso. Reasoned NMSU President Michael Martin in an ESPN article from the same year, the Pete costume “is decades old and scares children.”

While critical discourse may be what gets the ball rolling, no tangible change will take place until the Oregon State athletic department is onboard.

When queried about Benny and whether there were plans in place to alter his appearance, Nikki Pruett, Benny’s boss and the Director of Promotions/Fan Development said, “There are no talks of changing Benny that I am aware of.” When further questioned on Benny scaring children, Pruett referenced the Oregon State Media Guide, which describes Benny as being “especially adored by Oregon State’s youngest fans,’ stating that ‘Benny is usually surrounded by kids.”

If the athletic department is unwilling to alter the appearance of Benny in favor of children, there must be something else they can do to endear him to Beaver Nation’s youngest.

‘If [children] can associate something positive [with Benny], that [could] really help,’ said Egan, also the mother of a three-year old. ‘Seeing cartoon images around town [of Benny may] help to associate good thoughts with Benny.’ She also recommended Benny handing out candies and other treats.

Maybe it’s just a case of having an imperfect figure, a mascot that is somewhat intimidating to appease those that would hope Benny to be fierce, and a mascot that is somewhat cuddly and cute to excite children.

Gina Hoppe, a junior in Animal Sciences, puts the situation in perspective. Benny may scare “some kids, but definitely not all. Some kids love clowns and some hate them, so what are you gonna do?”‘ And that is precisely the question facing the athletic department; “What are you gonna do?”

As you will see soon, I’m going to post an interactive map for you to decide where the best pl

As you will see soon, I’m going to post an interactive map for you to decide where the best place for you is. The map will be based on the Cherry Hill-Moorestown area, and possibly the Deptford Mall area. Stay tuned!

But, until then, I’ll post my weekly top-? list. This week’s topic? Makeovers, of course.

1) Ulta
Ulta is a great place to get a makeover, as many locations have a salon right inside. Depending on where you go (I’m basing my prices by the one located in Mt. Laurel, NJ), the prices and services vary.
- the location in Mt. Laurel has not only a hair salon, but also a place to get your makeup done. A basic shampoo and style costs about $30, and makeup application costs about $30 as well. This is a great place to go to if you have a special occasion coming up, such as a wedding or prom. They also have different kinds of beauty treatments as well, starting at about $30.

2) MAC
Of course, you knew this was going to end up on here. Now, from knowing a couple people who have gotten makeovers done here, I pretty much have an idea on what you have to do. Like any other salon, you have to make an appointment, or I believe they take walk-ins as well. The actual cost of the makeover is free, but of course a tip is only appropriate, and they require you to buy at least one item that they used on you. It’s not a bad deal, especially if you like what they did.

3) Sephora
Now, this one is iffy. I have a friend that works at Sephora, but she hasn’t been working there long, so I’m not sure how it works. But, like MAC and Ulta, you can get them. You can visit your local Sephora and check out how it works. I believe it’s like MAC, as in you don’t get charged for the actual makeover (except tip, if you wish), but you have to buy at least one product they used on you. If not, than it shouldn’t be more than $30-40.

Now, I’m not counting this as a top spot, but it’s always a possibility. If you don’t want to deal with the hassle of a mall/shopping area, as pretty much every location of the three stores above is around a mall, you can always check out your local salon. Many salons double as a hair and nail salon, and also do other beauty services.

Happy makeover!!

It has been awhile since I have been able to make a post, but it is really nice to have a few extra

It has been awhile since I have been able to make a post, but it is really nice to have a few extra minutes out of my day to sit down and getaway into SL. The cold weather always brings my favorite time of the year the holidays. Yes I am one of those people who shops early for gifts, plays holiday music all day, fill my home with holiday scents and decorates in time for Thanksgiving. So why not in SL? Well my bf and I are not that quite organized in SL but slowly we are sorting out the sim in time for a warm and cozy holiday dinner with close friends to sip eggnog and hot apple cider in front of our warm fireplace.

This year I am starting a new holiday tradition with my friends in SL. Yeah we can do the traditional holiday dinners in SL and gift exchange, but why not get creative with ideas to spend quality time with those that make your SL one of a kind. This year I have decided to invite my friends over a few days throughout the month to have an all out blast to decorate gift boxes, snowmen, ornaments, gingerbread men/women etc. It does take time to setup create and/or buy the items you need, so make sure to plan it out well. (*Just a side note make sure to check the permission of items when purchasing to make sure they allow you to share them. ) Once you have all your supplies, arrange them in order and set them to buy at 0L. It is a really good idea to set out an example you have created so your friends can have ideas while assembling together their very own project. Make sure you have a variety of items, for example, for a snowman create a cone nose, twisty nose, twig from a branch nose and so on then everyone can choose from several different pieces to make their very own creative one of a kind snowman. Why not set your sim/parcel radio to holiday music when everyone is there to share the holiday spirit. Even if it is a bit artsy/crafty/Martha Stewarty you get an opportunity to spend time with your very special friends.

If you have further ideas you want to share, leave me a comment I would love to read what is on your mind!

Today I chose to wear something too keep me warm in these freezing cold temperatures. There is nothing more classic and warm than a heavy wool coat, tights and boots.

Here is the logo: The new logo for Ilfracombe. Do you think it looks like a sperm? Here is the reaso

Here is the logo:

The new logo for Ilfracombe. Do you think it looks like a sperm?

Here is the reason behind it:
New brand says “Take another look at Ilfracombe and be surprised”
Representing Ilfracombe’s business community, Ron Ley, Director of Charterwell Homes said, “It is important that Ilfracombe looks at how it currently positions itself in the market and where it would like to position itself. Ilfracombe has not always been consistently presented as the quality destination it is and it is this lack of consistency and targeting of the lower-spend market that we aim to redress.”

A considerable amount of background work and collective thinking informed the process and development of the brand. Consultants Fresh Bread Marketing had a brainstorming session
in the summer with representatives from Ilfracombe’s tourism, retail and business
communities as well as Ilfracombe Town Council and North Devon Council. They were given the difficult task of encapsulating Ilfracombe’s fascinating and appealing attributes into one logo, strapline and brand that reflects and reinforces the distinctive essence of Ilfracombe.

Fresh Bread’s Tessa Martin said, “Ilfracombe is a fresh, intriguing place to visit with an
impressive landscape. It is steeped in and continues to offer a maritime experience and has a strong cultural theme with a fascinating Victorian heritage.” She continued, “The new
Ilfracombe logo, with its idiosyncratic ‘swirl’ above the ‘i’ indicates intrigue, mystery and
drama expressed with a spot of humour and fun too. It also reflects the twists and turns of
the landscape and can conjure up thoughts of the seaside, sea, an ice-cream, the harbour and fish.”

The logo incorporates the strapline “Curious Coastal Charm” – three words that evoke some of Ilfracombe’s best characteristics. Curious reflects the intriguing, edgy elements including
its arts and events; coastal communicates harbour, paths and dining and sports
opportunities; charm evokes Ilfracombe’s community spirit and individual appeal, fun for kids, couples and families.

Further devices to enhance the brand are included in the brand identity manual as well as a new image library that includes photographs specially commissioned and some submitted in Ilfracombe Town Council’s photograph competition. They have been selected to show fresh
angles and different perspectives compelling viewers to take a second look whilst always presenting Ilfracombe as a high quality contemporary seaside destination.

Access to the logos and images is through www.theilfracombecentre.co.uk under the
heading ‘About Ilfracombe’. The Brand Identity Manual explains how to get the most effective expression of the Ilfracombe brand and is free to use but the strict guidelines must be followed to ensure consistency, quality and continued brand recognition.

Brand guidelines should be found here:
http://www.theilfracombecentre.co.uk/media/logos/Ilfracombe-Brand-Identity-Guidelines.pdf

AMENDED: It appears as if the £40,000 wasn’t for the logo (originally read in the south devon version of the journal website) it was £5000 including the photographs. That sounds a lot more like it.

Unfortunately it appears as if it was miss-quoted from Cllr Philip Webb: http://www.thisissouthdevon.co.uk/news/Ilfracombe-ferries-new-identity/article-1529371-detail/article.html

However the logo is still poor and a huge missed opportunity for Ilfracombe. The main problem we have with it is that there is actually a really good idea in there which has been missed. The strapline ‘Curious Costal Charm’ is nice. Really nice actually, mostly because at last someone has said something marketable about Ilfracombe that is actually true. The problem is that the logo doesn’t seem to relate to this in any way. I’d have been really honest about the town in a marmite/VW sort of way. Shabby around the edges, faded glories, but a real heart and beautiful if look hard enough.

As stated on various blogs, we think the logo looks a lot like a sperm on the i (or is it just us?). In a town with a high rate of teenage pregnancy were not so sure it was that wise.

When this family approached Primaveris, they wanted to change the look of their kitchen and make it more user-friendly and classic.

The old cooker and stainless steel sink were dated and impractical for a family of 4, so we suggested replacing them with a reasonably priced Range Cooker and a deep Belfast Sink, giving them a larger oven and hob in the process. Although unsightly, their dishwasher was working well and didn’t need changing, so instead we hid it behind a door front (known as ‘integrating’).

We then changed the kitchen door fronts into a classical cream shaker with wooden knobs, and re-tiled the splashbacks in shades of terracotta, beige and cream.

Finally, we updated the grey counter tops with a solid Iroko worktop which matched beautifully with their existing terracotta floor tiles.

Another great kitchen transformation by Primaveris!

If your kitchen looks tired and old, consider a few low cost makeover options to transform your home.

When this customer contacted Primaveris, she was concerned that there was little she could do to bring her kitchen up to date, as she only had a tiny budget.

We checked her cabinets and discovered that they were still in good condition, so we suggested changing the doors and drawer fronts to a more modern style.

She chose a practical flat panel laminate door in white which would be easy to wipe clean, and some modern stainless steel handles. We also changed her tired laminate worktop for a new lighter colour top.

What a difference!
