Mummy does not like Gigglebiz either, she finds it disturbing. Disturbing means Mummy doesn’t like it. Mummy does not want to watch dirtgirl either, the disembodied heads freak her out. Do not ask what disembodied means. Furthermore, Mummy does not think that In the Night Garden is setting you a very good example. Ladies should not need to pull up their skirts and do a dance to make people happy. Mummy thinks that is wrong. Mummy also thinks that Makka Pakka may have an obsessive compulsive disorder and should probably seek help.

I know you love Waybuloo but unfortunately humans can’t levitate, no matter how happy they are. I know you like to “do floating” with the piplings, but you are heavy and Mummy’s arms hurt so you can only float for a little bit. You can do yoga without floating. The point of yoga is not to make yourself float, it is to make yourself sore. Mummy knows this because she has tried. It is only a matter of time before before Cbeebies make a show called “pop-liates” then you’ll discover a whole set of stomach muscles you didn’t know you had…

After the testimony of Oneness of Allaah swt and the Messengership of Muhammad , with firm belief and True Faith, one has to perform the acts of worship as ordained by Islaam. The benefits of Jihad are of great extent and large in scope, while its effects are far-reaching and wide-spreading as regards Islaam and the Muslims. For an individual Muslim, Jihad includes all acts of worship and all aspects of belief- thus bringing him greatest reward and vast blessings; and for the Muslim nation, Jihad provides all kinds of successes in respect of prosperity and dignity, victory and glory-thus bringing magnificence and splendour. In this article, Sheikh ‘Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Humaid, ex-Chief Justice of Saudi Arabia, has presented Jihad in the light of Qur’aan and Sunna. Of all the 99 Beautiful Names of Alláh, it is Ar-Rahmán and Ar-Rahím that we use, most frequently, in our prayers and dua’s. Ar-Rahmán and Ar-Rahím, are both derived from the same Arabic root word, Rahma, meaning mercy, compassion. Pickthall translates Ar-Rahmán and Ar-Rahím, as, the Beneficient, the Merciful, and Yusuf Ali says, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Most of us, unfortunately, take Alláh’s mercy and compassion for granted. But if we stop for a moment, and just reflect on the depth and extent of Alláh’s mercy, we will be astonished beyond words.

The Holy Qur’an frequently draws our attention to the world of Nature. So, let us consider, for a moment, the fragile world in which we live. We hear about the depletion of the ozone layer, the dangers of pollution, the need to preserve a sustainable environment for our children, and so on. Numerous books and TV programmes about nature and the universe arouse our curiousity, our sense of wonder. In many ways, scientists are realising today, what our Holy Qur’án revealed over 15 centuries ago: That we live in the centre of a violent universe, ever changing, constantly in motion. We are surrounded by forces that are so precariously balanced that the smallest shift could kill us all. A few years ago, the comet Schumacher-Levy plunged into Jupiter, and exploded with the energy of several million atom bombs. In astronomical terms, a difference of just a few degrees would have set it on a collision course with our planet earth. Indeed, the scientists say that human life is possible only on the very narrowest of margins. To illustrate just how narrow is that margin, let’s take this example. [show orange]

An orange, wrapped in plastic Clingfilm. If you can imagine that this orange is our planet earth, then the thickness of the clingfilm, is the atmosphere, the air we breathe. Most people think that the earth is solid. But, below us, much thinner than the skin of this orange, is the thin crust on which our continents are placed. Under that crust, are thousands of miles of boiling molten rock, oozing like a thick porridge around a solid iron core.

In size, all living creatures are like the specks of dust and bacteria that cover the surface of this orange. You can’t even see it without a microscope, just as astronauts in space, cannot actually see any life on earth, without special equipment.

Just imagine! A few miles below our feet, like, under the skin of this orange, we have thousands of miles of boiling liquid, oceans of molten lava; above us, a thin skin of breathable air, only a few miles deep. Above that, nothing; a complete vacuum. And the sun, without which life would not be possible, is 93 million miles away. But, what does that mean? 93 million miles? We cannot even make sense of such a distance. It’s just 93 followed by six zeros. But let’s make it easier. If this orange was our planet earth, then the sun would be a ball the height of this room, and that ball would be about 55 miles away, let’s say, the distance from here to Brighton or Bournemouth. Just imagine that! The slightest tilt of the earth, towards the sun in summer, and we complain that we’re unpleasantly hot. Then a slight tilt away from the sun in winter, and we’re freezing cold. Measure the distance of that tilt, a mere 4000 miles, compared with 93 million miles to the sun, and you will see that we boil or freeze within a range of, just 0.005 %. That is, not one percent, not one hundredth of a percent, but a mere one five thousandth of a percent!

If we reflect on this simple fact, we are left astonished. All life on this planet earth, is suspended, precariously, on the thin crust of a huge ball of boiling lava, covered by a thin membrane of oxygen, floating through space, passing deadly showers of meteors and comets and all kinds of deadly radiation. The mind just boggles. Any rock larger than about 1 or 2 miles thick, striking the earth head-on, like the comet Schumaker-Levy that struck Jupiter, would wipe out all life on this planet. The scientists and astronomers [some of them are atheists, they don’t believe in God], they tell us, that we living creatures survive on this planet, only by the narrowest of margins. Statistically, the dangers are so great, they say, and the mathematical probabilities of our survival are so small, that we should really not have been here at all! We Muslims as Believers would say, that our creation and continued existence on this planet, it is due entirely to the mercy of Alláh, subhánalláh wata-‘álá, glorified and exalted is He. The Holy Qur’án makes this point in many beautiful verses. For example, in Súra Saba [34:9] we read:

“See they not how little of the sky and the earth is open to them, and how much is hidden? If We wished We could cause the earth to swallow them up or cause a piece of the sky to fall upon them. Verily in this is a Sign for every servant that turns to Allah (in repentance).”

Sura Fátir v41 “It is Allah Who sustains the heavens and the earth lest they cease (to function): and if they should fail there is none not one can sustain them thereafter: verily He is Most Forbearing Oft-Forgiving”

and further in the same sura: verses 44 and 45:

44 “Do they not travel through the earth and see what was the end of those before them though they were superior to them in strength? Nor is Allah to be frustrated by anything whatever in the heavens or on earth: for He is All-Knowing All-Powerful.

 

1. If Allah were to punish men according to what they deserve He would not leave on the back of the (earth) a single living creature: but He gives them respite for a stated Term: when their Term expires verily Allah has in his sight all His servants.”

Next time we look up to the starry skies, let us think about those powerful forces that surround us. Forces that keep our very existence poised on a knife-edge, and let us thank Alláh subhánalláh wata-‘álá for his grace and mercy.

How do we become worth of Allah’s Mercy

How do we become worthy of Alláh’s Mercy? We become worthy of His Mercy, when we begin that long journey from doing what pleases us, to doing what pleases Alláh. To someone who is not in the habit of doing good deeds, someone who instinctively does anything and everything that pleases his own selfish ego, it is very difficult to start doing things that please Alláh. This comes only by conscious effort. But remember, when you do just one good action, you can repeat it, and it can become a good habit. Like a farmer with his seed, when you sow an action, you reap a habit. You sow a habit, you reap a character, You sow a character, and you reap a destiny. And the good destiny we all seek is to enter the garden that Alláh has prepared for those who seek his pleasure, and mercy.

We should also remember, that part of Alláh’s mercy, is that he is very patient with our shortcomings. We all have many faults, but Alláh’s anger does not just descend on us like a bolt of lightning, as soon as we step out of line. He always gives us time, lots of time, to recognise the error of our ways, and to put things right, to ask for mercy.

In the same way, we must not be impatient with others. We must also show mercy, wherever we have power and authority. This is especially towards our wives and our children. We must not project our fears and anxieties on them. We should never insult, embarrass or humiliate them over wearing hijáb, for example. Taking an aggressive attitude usually does more harm than good. It is much better, to teach and to encourage, using kindness and a setting a good personal example, without arrogance or self-righteousness. Let our sisters and children take their own time, to make their own decisions. We expect Alláh’s mercy and patience for ourselves. Why then, should we not show mercy and patience for others, especially our women and children? The first Hadíth Qudsi reminds us:

“When Allah decreed the Creation He pledged Himself by writing in His book which is laid down with Him: My mercy prevails over my anger.”

This Hadíth confirms that Mercy is more powerful than anger. It is one of the noblest qualities. When Nabi Muhammad entered Makka with an army of 10,000 soldiers, he could have severely punished the Quraish, for the cruelty and suffering they inflicted in the early years of Islám. Except for 4 individuals, he showed them all Mercy. The conquest of Makka was almost bloodless. Nearly everyone was forgiven. Look throughout the pages of history. You will not find anywhere, a better example of Mercy shown by a victorious conqueror. No wonder, Nabi Muhammad’s kindness and mercy touched them so deeply, that virtually all of Makka accepted Islam.

Let us pray to Alláh, subhánalláh wata-álá. May His mercy descend into our homes and in our hearts, not only during Ramadhán, but also throughout the year, insh-Alláh. May we all show greater mercy to one another, especially to those over whom we have some authority. May Alláh guide our leaders to show mercy to their citizens, our employers to their workers, our parents to their children. And May He reward us all, according to the best of our deeds. May this small community of ours, grow and prosper in love, mercy and brotherhood, and may we all, set a good example to other communities inside and outside of Islam, in Britain and beyond.

Innalláha wa malaaikata yusallúna alan nabi. Yá ay yuhal latheena ámanu sallú alayhi wasalli mú tas leema. Allahumma salli alá Muhammad, wa ala áli Muhammad, kama salayta ala Ibrahim, wa ala ali Ibrahim. Allahumma barik ala Muhammad, kama barakta ala Ibrahim, wa ala ali ibrahim. Elég fáradt vagyok, úgyhogy eltartott egy darabig, míg fölfogtam a feladatot, plusz míg helyükre raktam a számokat. Még mindig a Villette-et nyűvöm, az utóbbi napokban nem jutott rá annyi időm, pedig elég érdekes a szerelmi szál, ami és ahogy bontakozik. 

Tehát a 161. oldal és az 5. mondat. Újabb problémák: vajon csak a teljes, egész mondatok számítanak a lap tetetjétől, vagy a mondatvégi írásjeleket kell számolni? Az előző mellett döntöttem. És persze kénytelen vagyok két mondatot írni, mert most épp ugyan a második kötetet olvasom, de az igazi 161. az első kötetben van, ugye.

Végül elértem, hogy olyannak tűnt előttem a válasz, mintha egy jégdarabkát egy cseppnyi zamatos gyümölcs levével vagy cukorral ízesítenének. (II. kötet)

Nem vennék rá mérget, hogy sikeresen számoltam el ötig, de kábé ez a helyzet.

A mai nap jórészt a zakuszka-gyártás körüli teendők jegyében zajlott, de az óriási sikerre való tekintettel kénytelen vagyok újabb idézetekkel sokkolni – legelsősorban – saját magamat. Bele az éjszakába. 

Ezek a mostani idézetek amolyan igazán lelki, belső dolgokról szólnak, de kívülre helyezve, tárgyiasítva, metaforizálva. A vizsgált és a reflektáló én szinte teljesen szétválik az alábbi sorokban. A maga módján az egész félelmetes. 

A valaha gyakori híradás és levél elmarad; az addig ismétlődő látogatást hiába várjuk; nem érkezik sem könyv, sem újság, sem egyéb jele a megemlékezésnek.

E kihagyásoknak mindig van jól megalapozott oka, csak ismerné őket a remete. Míg cellájában tesped, a többiek, akikkel kapcsolatot tartott, a külvilágban az élet csúcspontja felé törnek. Az üres idő oly lassan vánszorog, hogy az órák is állni látszanak, mintha malomkő súlya nehezítené el a szárnyatlan idő lábát… ugyanez az idő talán eseményekkel zsúfolva, zihálva fut barátai számára.

A remete – feltéve, hogy értelmes remete – magába fojtja gondolatait, s e belső tél néhány hetére elrejti érzelmeit. Tudja, hogy a Sors időlegesen a mormota szerepét szánta neki, s mindjárt megnyugszik; kis gombolyaggá húzza össze magát, az élet falának üregében, nyugodtan várja a szélvihart, mely besodorja, elzárja és jégbe burkolja az évszak tartamára.

Így szól magában: “Jól van ez így; így kell lennie, ha egyszer így van.” És egy napon megnyílik talán jégsírja, visszatér a tavasz enyhesége, őt is újra éri a nap és a déli szél melege; rügyeznek a bokrok, fütyörésznek a madarak, minden felszabadító ének boldog feltámadásra szólítja. Lehetséges, hogy így lesz, de talán mégsem: a fagy szívéig hatolhat, megtörténhet, hogy nem enged fel soha; eljő a tavasz, és egy varjú vagy szarka a falból csupán a mormota csontjait kotorja elő. Nos, ha így történik, akkor így kell lennie: kezdettől fogva tudhatta, hogy halandó, s eljő a nap, amikor ő is megindul minden hús és vér útján. Korán éppoly jókor lesz, mint későn. (440-441. oldal)

Továbbhaladtunk – fogalmam sem volt róla, hová -, aztán egy fordulónál egyszer csak egy másik társasággal találtuk szembe magunkat, mely ellentétes irányból közeledett felénk. Ma is látom magam előtt a csoportot, amint abban a pillanatban felbukkant előttem. Egy szép, középkorú úrhölgy, sötét bársonyruhában; egy úr, valószínűleg a fia – nemesebb arcot, remekebb termetet, gondoltam magamban, sohasem láttam még; a harmadik személy rózsaszín ruhát és fekete csipkeátvetőt viselt.

Szemügyre vettem őket – a harmadik személyt épp úgy, mint az első kettőt – és mivel a perc egy töredékéig idegeneknek véltem őket, pártatlan ítéletet alkothattam megjelenésükről. De alig észleltem és rögzítettem a benyomást, máris tudatára ébredtem, hogy hatalmas tükörrel állok szemben, mely két oszlop között kitölti a térséget: a társaság mi voltunk. Ilyenformán életemben először, sőt talán egyetlenegyszer részesültem abban a “jótéteményben”, hogy úgy láthattam magam, ahogyan mások látnak. Nem érdemes foglalkozni az eredménnyel. Ellenérzés futott át rajtam, szorongó szánakozás; nem volt éppen hízelgő, de hát végül, még hálás is lehetek sorsomnak, hisz lehetett volna rosszabb is. (347-348. oldal)

Kezdjük az elején: az Érzéssel szövetkezve kiűztem a házból az Értelmet, lakatra zártam az ajtót előtte, aztán kettesben leültünk, kiterítettük a levélpapírt, tintába mártottuk a mohó tollat, és mélységes gyönyörűséggel őszintén kiöntöttük a szívünket. Mikor ezzel elkészültünk… két lapot sűrűn teleírtunk a mélységes szeretet, a szívben gyökerező hála szavaival… (egyszer és mindenkorra e zárójelen belül mélységes haraggal utasítok vissza minden gyanút, mely úgynevezett “melegebb érzésekre” vonatkozik. A nők nem ápolgatnak efféle “melegebb érzéseket” ott, ahol kezdettől fogva egy ismeretség egész folyamán sohasem ringathatták magukat abban a tévhitben, hogyha ezt tennék, nem követnének el halálos esztelenséget. Soha senki nem sodródik szerelembe, hacsak nem látta vagy nem álmodta, hogy felkelt a Reménység csillaga a Szerelem zavaros vizei fölött) mikor tehát kifejezést adzam erős és nagyra becsülő ragaszkodásomnak – olyan ragaszkodásnak, mely hőn óhajtja, hogy minden bút-bajt magához vonzzon, hogy kivegye osztályrészét mindabból, ami fájdalmas a szeretett lény sorsában, és  - ha lehetséges – elfordítson, másfelé irányítson minden vihart és villámcsapást arról a lényről, akire féltő gondoskodással tekint… akkor midőn mindez kifejezésre jutott, egyszer csak megrázkódott szívem kapuja, megnyílt rajta pánt és lakat, az Értelem serényen és bosszúállón belépett, felkapta a levélpapírt, elolvasta, fintorgott, törölt belőle, összetépte, másikat írt, összehajtotta, lepecsételte, s elküldte a tömören fogalmazott, rövid egyoldalas levélkét. És jól is tette. (420-421. oldal)

Némely tekintetben biztosan nem csak én ismerek magamra ezekből a sorokból – elképesztő a részletesség, a szemléletesség, ahogyan Brontë fölfejti a lélek legmélyebb bugyrait és kínjait -, de azért hobbit csak nem csinálunk már belőle. Életprogramként, szenvedélyesen, belemerülve az önsanyargatásba, precizitással, módszeresen, szinte a skízisig… Hátborzongató! Mert rossz napja lehet bárkinek, de itt az identitás legmélyebb gyökereiről van szó. Némi túltással élve, e regényt olvasva értettem meg végképp Freudot, azt hiszem.

Makka barátnémmal borzadtunk ma egy sort a könyv kapcsán, és még mindig azon merengek, vajon van-e ebben az egészben, a szövegben irónia. Egyelőre nem találok kapaszkodót, utalást, aminek fényében eldönthetném. Annyira egy a szöveg, a narráló és a főhős. Nincs rajta fogás. Még.

Makka firtatja legkedvesebb növényeimet, ami egyáltalán nem egyszerű kérdés. Annyi van, hogy holnapig sorolhatnám. Úgyhogy úgy döntöttem, szűkítem a dolgot, csakis teljes növények jöhetnek szóba, azaz például hiába rajongok a szőlőért, a tárkonyért vagy a sárgarépáért, teljes mivoltukban mégsem kerülhetnek a legkedvencebbek közé, mert – mondjuk -,  nem jelentenek esztétikai élményt, vagy nem fűznek hozzájuk kedves emlékek, nem ragaszkodom hozzájuk szárral, gyökérrel, levelekkel együtt… Meg aztán vannak az olyan puccosak,  a kamélia és társai, ilyesmikre gondolok, amelyek ugyan nagyon szépek, napokig elnézegetném őket, de túl sok közöm (egyelőre) nincs hozzájuk.

Így kissé kezelhetőbb a halmaz, úgy vélem, de továbbra is nehéz az ügy.

Ami biztos: a növény nekem egyenlő a kerttel. Szeretem a fákat, pláne az öreg fákat, biztosan azért, mert nekünk sok van belőlük, és köztük nőttem föl. Inkább hajlok a természetes rendezetlenség irányába, mint a nagyon megtervezett, nagyon megnyírt, kicsit sem csalitos kertek felé, ez is azért, amiért a miénk olyan, amilyen. Fontos az illat! Nem kell, hogy nagyon különleges legyen, csak finom. Az akác is nagyon jó, de némelyik rózsa is. Virágokból leginkább az egyszerűeket szeretem, minél jobban hasonlítanak a vadvirágokra, annál jobb. (Vannak azért persze kivételek, a rododendron bokrainkat például sokért sem adnám.)

Nagyon valószínű, hogy holnap más listát mondanék.

Makka kérdezi, bár nem egészen világos, hogy arról kell-e írnom, szerintem mi lényegtelen, vagy inkább magamról kellene lényegtelen dolgokat írnom. Szerintem az utóbbi, de mert ő nem ezt az utat követte, legyen az ő játékszabályai szerint:

lényegtelen, mennyibe kerül valami, ha megéri az árát…

lényegtelen, micsoda rendetlenség van a szobámban, ha éppen valami más sokkal fontosabb, és arra koncentrálok…

lényegtelen, milyen hacukában indulok reggel dolgozni, ahová megyek, nagyon nem számít a külcsín…

lényegtelen, milyen hosszú ideig nem hallok régi barátokról, mindig jó újra fölmelegítődni…

lényegtelen, milyen fáradt vagyok, és meddig tart, ha valami birizgálja a fantáziámat, addig csinálom, míg a végére nem érek…

lényegtelen, milyen műfaj, ha jó a zene, jöhet…

Makka fölkért, áruljak el magamról hét kis titkot, miből is arra következtetek, hogy úgy véli, van olyan izgalmas az életem, hogy egyáltalában legyenek titkaim, vagy legalábbis látszólag alig, valójában bizonyára roppant fontos dolgaim, ha már egyszer, ugye, ezek titkok lennének valamiért… Nem mintha nem mesélhetném el személyesen, de eszem ágában sincs játékrontónak lenni. Tehát.

1. Általában zokniban alszom. Tudom, hogy csakis idióták alszanak zokniban, de mert telente képes lefagyni a lábam (alacsony vérnyomás, bénázgató vérkeringés), valamint a komfortérzetem így tökéletes, rászoktam. Mezítláb képes vagyok reggelre megfázni…

2. Szeretek úton lenni. Autó, vonat, távolsági busz… Szeretek tömegközlekedési eszközökön bámészkodni. Persze nem a tömött villamos meg a “rohannom kell”-utazás a kedvencem, de ha már van ülőhely, és egész nyugodtan kapok levegőt, teljesen jól elvagyok, sőt! Minél hosszabb az út, annál jobb. Egyébként is szeretek szemlélődni, de egyetemi éveim alatt nyerték el igazi jelentőségüket ezek az utazások. Így tudtam vizsgaidőszakban lelkifurdalás nélkül lopni az időt, és csak úgy magamért, magáért a dologért nézelődni, gondolkodni. Alibi volt. Hiszen amíg a buszon ülök, nem tudok tanulni, nem tehetek róla, hogyan múlik az idő, nem én határozom meg, merre s hogyan alakulnak a dolgok. Elég bizarr, belátom, de a BKV volt nekem maga az oázis és a friss levegő. Azóta nem is nagyon akadna rá “programszerűen” időm. 

3. Nem szeretem Coelhot. Összesen két regényét olvastam, mindkettőt úgy kaptam kölcsön kedves ismerősöktől, hogy rajongva ecsetelték, miért kell ezt most és azonnal és feltétlenül, és hogy megváltozik az életem egycsapásra, majd meglátom. Nekem meg lapos volt és közhelyes. Kiábrándító. Olvasmányos, kellemes, csak nekem valahogy mégsem elég. Szégyenkezve adtam vissza a könyveket, azt kívántam, bárcsak tetszett volna, és igyekeztem jó képet vágni, mert megbántani sem akartam senkit. Nem egymásnak teremtettek minket.

4. Végtelenül lusta vagyok. Ez nem olyan nagy titok, csak kevesen hiszik el rólam. Pedig. Fegyelmezettséggel kompenzálok.

5. Ovis és általános iskolás koromban nagy szervezkedő és állandó főszereplő voltam mindenben. Szavaltam, énekeltem, táncoltam, vezényeltem, örsöket és rajt vezettem, rajzoltam, ami kell… Ez se nagy titok, de nagyjából ez is elmúlt, úgy kb. a gimnázium környékén. Kevesen képzelnék.

6. Lábfóbiám van. Már hogy a sajátjaimat nem nézegetem szívesen, mert hogy csúnyácskák. Még szerencse, hogy ritkán kerülnek a látóterembe…

7.  Állítólag férfi agyam van. Mondták már többen is, nem biztos, hogy hízelegni akartak. És nem is biztos, hogy az agyam. Ha mégis az, akkor talán a nem kifejezetten finom és nőies humoromra célozhattak.

Nincs kinek továbbítsam a labdát, mert hogy nem vagyok igazi blogger, de azért majd próbálozom. Ha másképp nem, élő szóval vagy mi.

I just wanted to share this excellent new site I came across: www.islamicmodestwear.com. It is so user friendly and offers excellent speedy customer service. This site offers the latest styles of Abaya at very cheap prices. I bought 1 Abaya initially and was so impressed with the quality that I went back on the site and bought a further 2 Abayas and from that gifted one to my mother. She was overwhelmed by it, the size was perfect and the design was exactly what she’d go for. The Abayas start at only £22.00 and go up to £49.00. This is so reasonable as I have seen many other sites that have the embroidered Abayas, which are quite out dated on the designs starting at £40.00.

Another thing I would like to share about this site is that it offers exceptionally cheap prices for the new Islamic swim suits also know as the ‘Burqini’. I must be honest these are not loose fit the figure can be seen so might not be totally suitable to wear on the beach, but excellent for indoor swimming (for those who wish to cover up more then a swimming costume). These act just the same as normal costumes and are very comfortable to wear and swim in. The swim suits on this site are all 1 piece and are full cover unlike other Islamic swim suits I’ve come across that come in 5-7 pieces. With this suit you’re ready to go and jump into the pool within seconds. The suits come in UK sizes 6-10,12-14 and they go up to size 18. As I am a size 18+ I was told the size 18 would fit, I wasn’t sure but was very pleased when it did! The best thing was that I was offered a full refund if the outfit didn’t fit! The swim suits only start at: £25.00 and go up to £31.00. There are many designs to choose from. They also offer ¾ swim suits that cover both the arms to the elbow and the legs to the knees.

‘Sectarian’ clashes in the second-most holiest site in Islam can only serve to achieve one forbidding outcome. The sight of bloodshed and hostilities in the near vicinities of this sacred site is tantamount to sacrilege in the hearts and minds of Muslims all across the globe. News of four deaths and several more critically injured in the aftermath of the recent clashes in Medina will have no doubt turned memories back to the 1987 massacre in the holy city of Makka during the annual Hajj. Despite the seemingly subsiding intensity of these clashes however, it is paramount to underline the lingering nature of its outcomes just as was the case following the massacre – which will remain to influence and shape policies vis-à-vis segments of Saudi society, and wider regional relations.

In order to come to terms with the motives for the recent clashes in Medina, it is crucial to highlight the ongoing geopolitical shifts in the wider region. The Middle East today stands at a unique crossroads; its peoples are witnessing the displacement of age-old power structures that have been the symbol of this region for decades. Naturally, the ‘old-guard’ is pitted against the forces of change, with dear life stuck between their teeth. As loyal and attentive students of history will no doubt attest to, power holds an incredible capacity to corrupt. An even more real but no less frightening concomitant of power lies in its longing for eternalness.

The distressing events in Medina over the last few days are not sectarian clashes, yet the principle motive of its agitators is to utilize these events to heighten regional sectarian tensions. Faced with a climate of growing Islamic solidarity and imperialist rejection, these provocateurs are placing their last hopes in heightened sectarianism to secure their loosening-grip on power. The process of awakening amongst the Arab masses throughout the Middle East is alarming the oil-sheikhdoms, and at their helm the kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Riyadh and Cairo once stood tall as the nerve centres of the Middle East from where regional agendas, carefully calibrated in line with US imperialist interests, were set. Times have changed. Today, the simmering revolution in Egypt is being restrained thanks only to the firing guns of an ailing Mubarak. Saudi Arabia, which proudly lauded itself as the counter-balance to Iran can no longer maintain a steady footing, and finds itself replaced by a far more pragmatic and conciliatory, Qatar. Arguably, the final nails in the coffins of these historical ‘powerhouses’ have also been hammered down by the growing role that is being played out by a Turkey that is increasingly turning Eastwards.

The House of Saud today faces a distinctive predicament. Over recent decades, the Saudi kingdom has single-handedly pumped millions upon millions of US Dollars to fund the Wahhabi sect of Islam around the world. The Saudi monarchy which came into power on the crest of Wahhabi fanaticism, resolved to export Wahhabi ideology from 1979 with the particular aim of countering the Shia following the success of the Islamic Revolution in Iran. Today, the godfathers of the Wahhabi and Salafist groups are haunted by the products of their very own making. Faced on the one hand with the return of their now matured brood, and on the other by a resolutely passionate political agenda on the Arab street strongly against US imperialism in the region, the Saudi monarchy has chosen to kill both birds with the fire of sectarianism.

The impression of a wounded fox with no other weapon in hand except for its most primordial ability to fan the fires of sectarianism is thus the proper context against which these coordinated attacks by the Saudi army aided by the fanatical ‘moral police’ (the Mutawwa’ah) ought to be seen. From Nigeria to Pakistan, Saudi policy is operating with the single goal of obfuscating the ‘awakening’ of the Arab and Muslim populous through providing regional developments with sectarian overtones. Invented terminologies like the ‘Shia tide’ and the ‘Shia crescent’ are used in line with this agenda: an agenda to polarize the unifying Muslim ranks that stand against US imperialism in the Middle East into ‘Sunni’ and ‘Shia’ bastions.

Muslims around the world, especially those who are situated in the Middle East, should be cognizant of these underlying currents. They should not allow themselves to be utilized as instruments through which the waning power of client-states in the heart of the Arab and Muslim world is consolidated. In this regard, the primary onus falls upon Muslim leaders to refrain from pitching these clashes as ‘sectarian wars’.
