Karl Gude and the folks at Michigan State University who are putting on that first-ever Information

Karl Gude and the folks at Michigan State University who are putting on that first-ever Information Graphics Conference have a good new resource up online, whether you’re attending or not: video interviews with the graphics gurus who will be presenting.

In this video interview: John Grimwade, long-time Malofiej and SND graphics instructor, mentor and all-around genial genius, talks about the challenges of doing good work on deadline, whether that’s daily, weekly or monthly. “It’s better to be great at one thing than to be mediocre at several,” laughs John, describing why he prefers the quickness of 2-D diagramming for most work at Conde Nast’s Traveler and Portfolio magazines.

There are also interviews with Nigel Holmes, Kevin Hand, Matt Ericson, Bill McNulty and more at the site for the conference, which runs June 3-5 in East Lansing.

A quick program note: SND is not a sponsor for this conference (sniff … no one asked us), but we do support learning about our craft! If you have questions about anything at this event, though, we ask that you ask the fine folks at MSU. Cool? Cool.

The jury awards this prize each year to the best of the work presented in the competition. Read the release in Spanish here.

The winners were announced Friday during the closing ceremony of the 15th Malofiej World Infographics Summit, organized by SND’s Spanish Chapter (SNDE) and the Faculty of Communication at the Universidad de Navarra. The jury was chaired by Dave Gray from XPLANE.

“It’s excellent. It’s innovate. It’s creative. It’s a new type of online graphic based on databases that will change daily,” said juror Ramon Salaverria, from the communications faculty at the Universidad de Navarra.

“We talked a lot about what makes an infographic, but this one did more: It really becomes an analytical piece of software,” said juror Don Wittekind, from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. “I have just never seen anything like it before.”

In addition to the Peter Sullivan Prize, The New York Times also was honored with two other Gold medals, one in print and another online.

The jury awarded 12 Gold medals in all. Other Gold winners were Clarin (Argentina), Expresso (Portugal), San Jose Mercury News (U.S.), The Oregonian, (U.S.), Dagens Nyheter (Sweden), The Guardian (UK), Welt am Sonntag (Germany), Mundo Estranho (Brazil) and National Geographic (U.S.).

The jury awarded the Miguel Urabayen “Best Map” award to Welt am Sonntag for its work explaining in detail the migration of Germans after World War II.

The idea was to help fans understand the action beyond the visceral experience. As Alejandro said, it was to allow that time for reflection of who scored, how and where things could have been improved in the emotional ride of elimination.

We’re trying to get his presentation so we can post some high quality examples (much better to see it, we think, than try to have us tell you about it). Jonathon Berlin is off working on that while I do the updates from speakers, so expect more soon. For now, we leave you a taste of it with a photo from inside the session room.

Being “platform agnostic” comes with a bunch of real-life editing skill in an ever-evolving medium, though. And Matt was quick to point that out in his completely enthralling presentation.

Our favorite analogy was from Shan Carter in online graphics at nytimes.com (and our former colleague at The Merc), who says that he’s trying to build work for “both Bart and Lisa Simpson,” meaning that it can be surface and simple (like Bart) or deeper and thoughtful (like Lisa). It’s a good way to think about making work that appeals to two very different kinds of readers.

Matt used the example, among others, of the good reporting that The Times has done at chronicling the war in Iraq in the Casualties of War interactive feature, which can be both a fast scan or a completely immersive experience. How you choose to use the data depends on your needs, and in that way it is a completely different tool than the print newspaper. Check it out to see how you can dig deep into complex data sets.

The structure of the graphics department at The Times is changing rapidly, becoming infused with the best ways to tell stories and still branding that with the authority of what has always been done well in print, namely working hard to have a commanding voice.

That’s a consistent theme here so far, convergence, and specifically how the expansion of storytelling in media other than print provides both opportunity and challenge. The stuff we’re hearing about addresses that ambitious intersection, the sweet spot we’re all trying to find in our newsrooms.

The speakers for the first workshop day include Matt Ericson of The New York Times, Alejandro Tumas of Clarin, Luis Miguel Taklim of AnyForms, Dave Gray of XPlane, Marcelo Valoncini of RCS (both Corriere della Sera and Gazzetta delio Sport in Milano), Don Wittekind of the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and Aitor Eguinoa of 90grados.

Jonathon Berlin promises his first video reports soon will be “so amateur you won’t believe I made them with an actual professional camera.” Hey, it’s all about the content, right?

Plus we’ll give all the information by session, talk with some of the folks in short videos (um, we will try our best at a professional product) and pick up any handouts the speaker let us share so we can make them available as downloads. Here at The Blog, we aim to please.

London – The SND International Web Desk begins a week of reporting from England and Spain, armed with spirit and, after some sleep (we spent too long out on Day 1), the absolute will to show you, our loyal audience, the swell stuff that the Society’s members are doing here. Design mag editor Jonathon Berlin and I are thrilled to be the reporters here, on the ground, in the vibrant visual journalism culture that is SND in Europe.

One of the most amazing things about SND is how it has been able to forge a common language in our little corner of the journalism world, which doesn’t seem so little at all. Every time we leave the U.S., we remember that. (Note to ourselves: Leave the U.S. more often!) And our hope is to show you all the cool stuff that we encounter along that journey of learning, the ways our world connects.

And we met up with some U.S. friends, too. Robb Montgomery and Nina Mehta showed us the town before we had even had much rest!

We’re pretty geeked, despite the jet lag. We have digital cameras, video skill (sort of), decent audio equipment and the spirit to tell great stories from the amazing SND folks we’ll encounter here. And our past experience indicates that SND’s many great voices in Europe will be extraordinary hosts, giving of both their talent and hospitality.

One of our earliest SND experiences abroad was that legendary workshop in Barcelona at the Hotel Arts, where the world learned so much about design and graphics (and how to throw one heck of a party). That was one for the record books: Three days, endless exuberance.

That workshop was the doorway to so much. Many of our great friendships here were forged during that tremendous time. Twelve years later, we still cannot thank SND’s Spanish chapter enough for helping the organization truly go global. We are all better for it.

First up: Much-needed sleep.
Second up: A morning in the UK.
The main event: The awesomeness that is Malofiej 15.

Back soon.
Full report.
Promise.

The SND International Web Desk is headed for Spain. My Mercury News colleague Jonathon Berlin, who is also the editor of Design mag, will be my traveling companion and co-blogger as we decamp for the welcoming environs of Pamplona and the 15th Malofiej Infographics World Summit. If past summits are any indication, Malofiej 15 should be a blast, a combo of terrific training and great global gathering. We can’t wait to soak it all in!

We’ll take off first for London, where we will hang with Robb Montgomery of VizEds, who just happens to be in Britain, Nina Mehta, one of “The Intern” winners from Orlando who is spending the semester abroad, and our old pal Michael Agar, graphics editor at The Observer and all-around swell guide.

Visiting London is always an amazing experience because so many media projects there have been and continue to shake up the world.
The Guardian and all the smart energy of its transformation, of course. There are the revolutionary changes afoot at The Telegraph. And we’re big fans of the work at BBC News in multimedia. So expect that we’ll muse on what we see in the UK.

The main event, though, will be unfolding at the Universidad de Navarra thanks to the hard work of the school and SND’s Spanish chapter.

Graphics pros from around the globe will be on hand when the workshop portion of Malofiej 15 starts on Sunday. Geoff McGhee of The New York Times, Juan Velasco of National Geographic and Javier Zarracina of The Boston Globe will be instructors for the hands-on sessions.

We’ll do our best to get the download from the three gurus when we arrive on Wednesday, just in time for the party that opens the World Summit (hey, no one said this has to be all work!).

We promise (twist our arms) to raise a glass to John Grimwade, the longtime “Show, Don’t Tell” leader from Conde Nast who cannot be there this year. John’s staying in New York City to launch the business mag Portfolio, and while we will definitely miss his effortless leadership, stellar style and lively presence, we can’t wait to see the work he’s doing for the new title.

So stay tuned for The Blog’s reports from the road. We’re brushing up on our Spanish, and we’ll do our very best to give you the lowdown. Charla a usted pronto.
