I am not the greatest match analyst in the world particularly when I have attended the game as my view is usually distorted by my favourite pair of beer goggles, however this weekends 12.45am start meant that unfortunately when i took to the stand I was in a far better position to analyse the match.

Chelsea started the game well with a starting line up containing no suprises, in the first half an hour of the game Chelsea were defensively strong with Cech looking dominant in the air for the first time in months and Ashley Young and Gabriel Abonghlahor looking lost up front.

When Friedel was foxed by a lucky bounce from a Didier Drogba shot to open the scoring and the Chelsea fans celebrated it appeared that Chelsea were set to reinforce last years result and break the Villa Park hoodoo once and for all.

However this was not to last on 32 minutes Carvalho failed to connect to a clearing header from a corner and Richard Dunne powerfully headed home the deflected cross everything changed at Villa Park. Whilst Chelsea continued to dominate possession the complexity of the game had changed, suddenly Ashley Young and Gabriel Abonglahor seemed to have the measure on their markers and suddenly the game was afoot.

Second half another set piece led to James Collins connecting to a header putting Villa ahead and bringing their fans to life. Chelsea were chasing the game dominating the possession but looking vunerable to the pacy counter attacks and crosses of Abonglahor and Young, with Petr Cech’s aerial game seemingly collapsing in front of our eyes.

Chelsea however did create chances with both Deco and Malouda fluffing their lines with just Friedel to beat, Villa however held firm under pressure for the result of their season so far.

So overall Chelsea played averagely with defensive errors costing the points when on another day we would now be celebrating a Chelsea victory.

Malouda : Depuis le début de la saison, le Français se trainait un peu avec les Blues. Pas aligné en équipe de France depuis quelques temps, le Guyanais n’était donc plus au mieux. Mais parfois, un match peu relancer une carrière ou juste lancer un joueur dans sa saison, c’est le cas de Flo’. Dimanche dernier, à la 91^ème minute du choc Chelsea – Liverpool, Malouda a, d’un coup de pate, lancé sa saison. Sa sélection pour les deux matchs de qualification peut laisser envisager une titularisation, surtout avec les forfaits de Gourcuff et ribéry.

Toulalan : Comme Evra, Jeremy Toulalan n’a rien à prouver au public français et européen. Son match contre la Fiorentina avec Lyon en Ligue des Champions a fait taire les sceptiques et a appuyé l’opinion des pro-toulalan. Excellent avec les Lyonnais, il réalise des performances honorables en équipe de France même s’il n’égale pas encore Lassana Diarra. Toulalan aura donc des chances de se retrouver titulaire face aux Iles Féroé à Guingamp, samedi. Des chances et peut –être même des certitudes …

A. Diarra : Le Bordelais se retrouve orphelin de  son coéquipier en club, Yoann Gourcuff, à Clairefontaine. Mais il en faut plus pour désorienter un Alou Diarra en pleine forme depuis la saison dernière, année du sacre pour le FCGB. Le Girondin s’est révélé au grand jour même si on l’avait déjà repéré quand il jouait pour l’Olympique Lyonnais. Depuis son entrée en cours de jeu lors de la finale de la Coupe du monde 2006, Alou a bien changé, son talent ne fait que grandir et sa technique se parfait. Cependant, le Bordelais n’arrive pas encore à se frayer une place de titulaire sous les ordres de Raymond Domenech, la concurrence est bien là. Espérons pour le Girondin qu’il aime la compétition !

Lassana Diara  : Passons aux deuxièmes des Diarras, j’appelle Lassana. Il y a le “What a fucking disgrace” de Drogba, mais aussi, dans le même genre, le “What a good player !” venant de la bouche des Français et des supporters Merengue ! Parce que oui, depuis qu’il a acquis le titre de CF, “club fixe” , et que pour une fois Lass’, comme on le surnomme, s’est vraiment posé, on se rend compte à quel point ce jeune est bourré de talent ! Le Real cette saison, se doit d’être exigeant de ces joueurs, il y a 200 millions sur le terrain tout de même.  Pourtant, de l’extérieur, on a l’impression que Lass’ joue sans pression, à son rythme, capable de décaler parfaitement Henry ou Anelka et même de mettre au fond quelques reprises de volées, aussi appelées “patates”… On se répète mais… “What a good player ! “

Abou Diaby : Allez hop, encore un ! Un bon joueur, un gunner, un Français… Un peu comme Nasri, Clichy, Sagna… Un début de saison en trombe, à l’image de son club, Arsenal. Puis, un petit coup de mou, lui aussi encore à l’image de son club, suite à la défaite contre United. Ce match contre United, oh que oui, Diaby s’en souviendra… D’abord comme un match ou il tient sa place, et réussit une bonne première mi temps. Puis, il y a la remontée au score de MU, et ce but, si malheureux, contre son camp, qui laisse Almunia sans voix. Depuis, Arsenal se relève doucement, mais cette année, semble un peu perdre le rythme, de même que Liverpool, dès les première journées quant à la Premier League…

Moussa Sissoko : On termine ce tour des milieux, avec Sissoko. Il n’a que 20 ans, mais a déjà (presque) tout d’un grand. Toulouse, sa patrie depuis qu’il est devenue pro, ne peut désormais (presque) plus s’en passer. 4 buts en 34 matchs l’année dernière, Mr Moussa en a déja collé 3 cette saison… De quoi ravir Alain Casanova, son entraîneur, ainsi que Raymond Domenech, qui peut continuer tranquillement à lui faire confiance. Vous l’aurez compris, à ce tempo là, Sissoko va (presque) commencer à jouer avec les Bleus , et son jeu devenir (presque) aussi alléchant qu’une mousse au chocolat !

Há algumas semanas a Globo - querendo pagar pouco, jejejejeej – lançou a campanha O Melhor Emprego do Mundo que selecionará um jornalista formando ou recém formado para o cargo de correspondente internacional dos seus canais à cabo.

Ser correspondente deve ser legal mesmo, mas o melhor emprego do mundo – da perspectiva de um viciado em futebol – é sem sombra de dúvidas o do senhor Fabio Capello.

Neste fim de semana o técnico da seleção inglesa esteve em 4 estádios diferentes acompanhando partidas da Premier League. E não foram joguinhos quaisquer.

No sábado Capello visitou o noroeste inglês. Foi a Bolton assistir a partida do time local contra o Tottenham. Jogo pra lá de emocionante que terminou empatado em 2 X 2.

Logo depois o técnico do English Team estava no Old Trafford vendo Manchester United X Sunderland. Com um golaço do búlgaro Berbatov e outro golzinho chorado do lateral Evra aos 47 do segundo tempo, os Red Devils garantiram o empate em 2 X 2 e mantiveram um tabu que já dura 41 anos. A última vitória do Sunderland contra o United em Manchester foi em 1968.

Mas se o sábado já havia sido bom, o que falar do domingo?

Primeiramente Capello teve a oportunidade de acompanhar a melhor partida do fim de semana, Arsenal 6 X 2 Blacburn Rovers no Emirates Stadium, com direito a show dos comandados de Arsène Wenger. O passeio dos Gunners foi 6 X 2, mas não é nenhum exagero dizer que poderia ter sido 10 x 4 ou 11 X 5. Detalhe, 8 gols marcados por 8 jogadores diferentes, eu nunca havia visto algo assim. Jogo histórico, inesquecível! E tenho quase certeza que o treinador da seleção inglesa se lamentou demais por Cesc Fabregas ser espanhol, que maturidade aos 22 anos, que grande craque!

Fabio Capello saiu do Emirates e se dirigiu ao Stamford Bridge para assistir o clássico Chelsea X Liverpool. Mais uma grande partida que terminou com a vitória da equipe londrina por 2 X 0 com gols dos franceses Anelka e Malouda. E excepcional apresentação do ebúrneo Didier Drogba.

Pra muita gente o fim de semana de Fabio Capello pode parecer um martírio, sábado e domingo trabalhando, viagens e tal. Mas pra mim, um viciado em futebol, este fim de semana mais parece um sonho. Não bastasse, hoje à tarde provavelmente ele estará em Birmingham pra mais uma partida que promete, Aston Villa X Manchester City que fecha a rodada da Premier League.

Da onipresença do Capello fica um ensinamento; técnico de seleção tem que viver em estádio. É só no campo que se vê um jogo em sua perfeição. O treinador anão da nossa seleção por exemplo, raramente é visto nos estádios do Brasil e da Europa. É por esta e por outras que o English Team é meu favorito pra levar a Copa de 2010.

Chelsea go on first place in the Premier League after a crazy game with Liverpool won 2-0. Goals for Abramovich’s team were submitted by Anelka and Malouda.

Late winners in 1-0 wins are just as important as the classy 5-0 crushing. But do Arsenal lack the mentality to grind out victories when facing adversity?

19^th September 2009. With the scored poised at two goals apiece,a battling West Ham side look to be on course for securing an excellent point against Liverpool. But as the game nears its conclusion, Liverpool head forward. A chipped cross from the left hand side finds the predatory Fernando Torres to give Rafa Benitez’s under par team an invaluable win.

12^th September 2009. Stoke are proving typically difficult to penetrate for Carlo Ancelotti’s Chelsea in the second half of a match that potential champions should win. With stoppage time four minutes old, one last exertion from Chelsea saw the ball drop to Florent Malouda. His drive found the back of the net, and Chelsea had ground out three points in the dying seconds.

20^th September 2009. After a 90^th minute Craig Bellamy finish looks to have secured a point for the potential heirs to their throne, Manchester United flood up field in a last gasp effort to beat their City rivals. The ball falls at the feet of Ryan Giggs thirty yards out. With the outside of his left boot, he threads the ball through to Michael Owen who makes no mistake. United had snatched not just the win, but a psychological victory.

Eight days where three of the top four clubs have shown the ability to achieve a positive result, even when they aren’t at their best.

I am aware that this blog often lingers on the edge of Arsenal-bashing. But it’s a fair point that when things aren’t going their way, they seem to relent.

It’s all well and good when Arsene Wenger’s men are jiving their way through a Portsmouth defence at will, but what about when they come up against a team up for the challenge?

They lack the drive, the mentality and motivation to beat teams obviously less talented than themselves.

Cesc Fabregas, Robin Van Persie and Andrey Arshavin are unbelievably talented footballers, but they don’t have the attitude of a Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard or Wayne Rooney- players that you can quite easily see scoring deep into injury time to win you a game.

I think the source of this deficiency is in the central midfield position. It’s becoming quite tedious now. Wenger looks, at the moment, to have solved his defensive problems after some impressive early season performances from Thomas Vermaelen. But the lack of a tenacious, determined anchorman is holding his team back.

How many times did Roy Keane or Dennis Wise inspire their teams to evade the jaws of defeat?

Denilson or Abou Diaby are unlikely to develop into talismanic catalysts in the mould of Wise or Keane. And, to be fair, there aren’t too many quality players in that category.

It looks like we may never know just how good Arsenal could have been.

If not, the rest of the top four will have to be the ones to keep giving us these stunning climaxes.

As much as I don’t want to say it, I feel like this may have been the week where the contenders separated themselves from the pretenders, or where the wheat finally separated itself from the chaff, if you will. It pains me, mostly because I’m an Arsenal fan but also because I’m desperate to see someone (ANYONE) other than ManU hoist that trophy, with as many changes in that top four oligarchy as possible – other than Arsenal’s place in it, of course.

So Tottenham playing well was a good thing for me, because, despite their heated rivalry with Arsenal, it was another team putting pressure on the biggies and they had the chance today to knock off the reigning champs. They failed, and big time. They opened the game in brilliant fashion with a laser of a bicycle kick from Jermain Defoe inside of the first 50 seconds putting the North London side up 1-0. But then United did what they always do – slow and steady to the finish line. In the 25th minute, Ryan Giggs curled in a free kick to knot the scoreline, and Anderson blasted one past Cudicini just before halftime to give ManU the lead for good. Paul Scholes had a typical Paul Scholes day, sliding into two dangerous tackles and earning himself a red card in the 59th minute. Being reduced to ten men didn’t hamper United much, though, as Rooney tiptoed right down the lane to slot home Manchester’s third and final goal of the game.

And just like that, Tottenham’s supposed coming-out party was put on ice, if not abandoned altogether, and their 100% record went out the window as well in favor of a clear statement of intent from the defending league champions. Spurs just seemed short of answers today, scoring early but then never really finding anything else to punish ManU with. Perhaps the loss of Modric had a role to play in this, but whatever the case, it doesn’t bode well for the longevity of their stay at the top of the table.

I don’t even want to talk about this one. Maybe I’m officially a soccer nut if a loss like this can screw up my whole day, because that’s what it did. I watched the rest of the matches I recorded today after this, but only grudgingly and with the bitter hope that the other big teams would fail too. I’m not going to bother describing each goal, because it will just depress me further. The first was tragically comical in everything from the ball’s lofted trajectory off Micah Richards’ bulbous head to Almunia’s hapless expression as the ball ricocheted off his own melon and into the Arsenal goal. 1-0 City despite Arsenal looking the better side in the opening minutes. Things were pretty even for a while after that, until Arsenal started piling on the pressure in the second half, eventually resulting in a goal by Robin Van Persie to tie things up. For a good ten minutes after that, it seemed inevitable that we would get another and take the lead, but there was some kind of lapse in the aftermath of Adebayor’s very intentional kick to Van Persie’s face and Alex Song’s foul of revenge on his former teammate. City parlayed the resulting confusion into a lightning quick counterattack and a strike from Craig Bellamy to restore their lead. And then Adebayor scored (that’s all the description I’m going to give) before jetting to the other end of the field to celebrate in front of the Arsenal fans. Cunt. It might have been the fastest I’ve ever seen him run. If he had hustled like that last season, Arsenal might have competed better down the stretch. But no matter. He got his ticket (check?) out of London and over to the trendy new Manchester side, where it must be said he is playing quite well. He reminds me of my separated parents, only NOW doing all the things he should have been doing all along to salvage his former relationship. Do I sound bitter?

There was one silver lining in this match, and it was the return of Tomas Rosicky, including a sweet goal in his first game back. It came on some gorgeous link-up play between he and Fabregas, who lofted the ball to the little Mozart, who in turn needed just one touch to send it on its way. The whole Arsenal side looked better after he was introduced, so everyone just pray he can miraculously avoid anymore injuries for a while and we may have a winning combination on our hands.

Two very different victories here, but with very familiar overtones. Liverpool absolutely ran rampant over Burnley, with Yossi Benayoun netting a hat trick and effectively setting up Dirk Kuyt for the fourth by blazing the shot that Brian Jensen parried into Kuyt’s path. Chelsea, on the other hand, needed another late-game winner to beat a bottom half side, but they, like Manchester United, proved that it doesn’t matter how you earn those points, as long as you get ‘em. They secured all three today and kept their perfect start going, now having won five games in five tries. Only they and Manchester City can claim a 100% record going forward, with Chelsea having played one more game at this point.

Which brings me to a question I have for my own theory: if the true title contenders are separating themselves from the pack this week, what does this say about Man City? Because I don’t really consider them contenders for anything other than a Europa League, or at least I didn’t before the season started. I’m hoping I’ve just come up with a faulty explanation for the weekend’s turn of events, but I’m beginning to worry. They can’t be the real deal, can they?

The infamous summer transfer window is now well and truly shut. UEFA have told everyone to shut up and make do until January now. But are all the Premier League clubs sufficiently stocked?

Onto Chelsea, Everton and Fulham.

Chelsea

After changes in the backroom staff, Chelsea were looking to keep the on pitch personnel very much the same as last season. Perhaps one ‘marquee’ signing was expected but the board and new manager Carlo Ancelotti were keen to show faith in the current squad.

Ancelotti was most keen to bring in Andrea Pirlo from his former club Milan- but the Italian star wasn’t so keen. Instead, he had to settle for Russian wide man Yuri Zhirkov who will push Ashley Cole and Florent Malouda for starting positions.

Zhirkov was the only major signing of the summer. Ross Turnbull should be nothing more than a benchwarmer and emergency cover for Petr Cech. Daniel Sturridge’s decision to move to Stamford Bridge was something of a surprise. But with Andriy Shevchenko’s departure coinciding with Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou expected to head to this year’s African Nations Cup in January, he could be given the chance to shine.

Everton

Joleon Lescott’s longwinded soap opera of a transfer eventually went through, despite David Moyes’ insistence that he would not sell. With Phil Jagielka also set to miss a sizeable chunk of the season, the centre of defence was in desperate need of replenishing.

After being linked with Phillipe Senderos and Richard Dunne, David Moyes eventually decided to join Tottenham in essentially pillaging Portsmouth’s squad to swoop for Sylvain Distin. Distin is just as competent a defender as Distin for a fraction of the price, and represents a fantastic deal for the Toffees.

Still feeling the need for defensive cover, Dutch international John Heitinga was snapped up from Atletico on deadline day. Diniyar Binyaletdinov provides Everton with the natural width that has been the lacking from their recent sides. He will not be looking to follow in the footsteps of released wide man Andy Van Der Meyde.

Fulham

They performed above and beyond what was expected of them last year, but if Roy Hodgson is to repeat the task, they needed to strengthen all round this summer. Past Andy Johnson, the side had little natural goal scoring talent. Danny Murphy was relied on too much in midfield. And continued question marks over Brede Hangeland’s future meant signing a new defender couldn’t be ruled out.

Hodgson managed to keep Hangeland and the majority of last season’s team together but seems to have opted for a conservative summer transfer policy. Jonathan Greening is an experienced, proficient box-to-box man, but is often a victim of his own versatility. Stephen Kelly is a sound right back who has been unlucky with injuries. He will push for a first team place.

Damien Duff looks like a player that has reached his plateau and is now entering the back end of his career, but will provide a creative focal point in addition to Danny Murphy. Bjorn Helge Riise could be a wildcard after Roy Hodgson used his extensive Scandinavian football knowledge to secure the signing of the Norwegian.

In a very limited number of matches, there have already been quite a few surprises and the question now becomes whether or not particular teams are as good/bad as they looked in their earliest outings. These are my gut feelings as to which teams are pretenders and contenders at this most preliminary of stages.

• Manchester United are finally going to fall off their championship pace, but not by as much as many think (or as I would like). I know they’ve looked pretty mediocre in their first two matches, but they are a historically slow-starting team and Sir Alex is a strong enough coach that I’m sure they will eventually settle in and start rolling off games. If nothing else, Rooney will at some point hit a groove and score something like 30 goals in 4 matches to earn them a few points. Will it be enough to keep them at the top of the table? No, but they’ll do better than they should based purely on quality of management.
• Manchester City will both exceed and fall short of people’s expectations. Now a lot of this depends on whose expectations we’re talking about, but the point is true nonetheless. They will exceed expectations because haters and hypocritically bitter opponents (see Chelsea fans’ “money isn’t everything” banter) are already writing them off as impostors masquerading as the real deal and are predicting middling returns on their investments. While I believe their weaknesses at the back will eventually be their undoing – and while I would love to see them flounder in general – I find it hard to believe that the assembled group of superstars won’t at least mildly improve their fortunes over last year, when they finished 10th. That said, I don’t see them making any drastic jumps in the table, and they will probably be lucky to qualify for a European spot at all. Having splashed out close to £100 million in the summer transfer market, mere qualification will inevitably not satisfy the owners and some supporters, who will have their own ideas about how the money might have been better spent. If a top four spot is in their future, it’s a long-term plan at this point.
• Last season’s upstarts will be under pressure even if they produce similar results. I expect both Martin O’Neill and David Moyes to be on the hot seat at some point this year, mostly because they got their teams to perform so admirably last year. Everton and Aston Villa secured their positions as the best non-Big Four teams in 2008-’09, but this will be more of a curse than a gift in ‘09-’10 as both will be expected to improve upon last year’s performances despite the improbability of this task. Fair? No, not particularly, but I see it on the horizon nonetheless.
• Tottenham will be all up in the mix. No one doubts that Harry Redknapp produced magic when he took over for Spurs last season, but I fully expect him to continue the upward movement at the club and get the most out of a typically underperforming yet talented squad. Bringing both Robbie Keane and Jermaine Defoe back into the fold will bolster the team, as will the addition (again) of Peter Crouch. They’re currently sitting at the top of the Premiership table, and while that certainly won’t lost, don’t be surprised to see them hovering around the danger zone till late in the season.
• Arsenal will surprise people with the consistency of their challenge. Yes they’re still young and still a bit iffy at the back, but they are no joke and this year Wenger’s faith in his youngsters will finally start to pay off. In just two games, we’ve already seen improvement from players like Denilson and Song, neither of whom was dubbed as having much potential to rejuvenate the squad last season. Now, with another season under their belts and that much more savvy to draw on – not  to mention with a healthy Fabregas and Arshavin for the full season – they will take their game to the next level. Look for them to be challenging for the title till the bitter end.
• Chelsea are indeed that good and will likely win it all this year. They finished not far off the pace last season, and that was after a horrendous run under Luiz Felipe Scolari. Now, with a squad almost entirely carried over from last year’s, further time to gel, and (hopefully) some consistency in coaching, they are poised to reclaim the title and bring it back to London. Liverpool only just missed a chance to win the Premiership last season and would have been the obvious choice to hoist it this year had they not last their midfield maestro Xabi Alonso. Without him pulling the strings in the center of the park and making things go, I just don’t see them mounting the same kind of challenge. Chelsea, on the other hand, have essentially the same team they had last season with the potentially key addition of Yuri Zhirkov to bolster an already strong left side that includes Ashley Cole, Florent Malouda, and Joe Cole. Couple that with arguably the strongest central defensive pairing in the league in John Terry and Ricardo Carvalho, as well as a playmaker with metronomic consistency in Frank Lampard and you have the recipe for a Premiership champion. I’m an Arsenal fan at heart, but I believe they’re a year and a defender away from true contention, so a Chelsea title would be the next best thing. Say it with me now: Anybody But United.

Trong số các đại gia của Anh, Chelsea là đội gặt hái nhiều niềm vui nhất trong đợt du đấu vừa qua. Cả bốn trận ở Mỹ, họ toàn thắng. Trong số bại tướng thậm chí có cả Milan và Inter.

Trong trận đấu đầu tiên trên đất Anh, HLV Carlo Ancelotti và học trò vì vậy tỏ ra hết sức hồ hởi. Ít ai nghĩ họ có thể gặp khó trước đội hiện chơi ở hạng Nhất – Championship – Reading. Ngay cả khi đó là trận đấu diễn ra trên sân khách. Tuy nhiên, thực tế lại chứng minh điều ngược lại.

Nhiều thách thức đang đợi chờ Ancelotti ở phía trước.

Ra quân với đội hình mạnh gồm nhiều hảo thủ như Didier Drogba, Nicolas Anelka, Michael Essien hay Frank Lampard…, Chelsea không khó để kiểm soát thế trận. Chỉ trong hơn 10 phút, họ ba lần tung lời đe dọa về phía khung thành Reading bằng những pha kết thúc của Lampard hay Drogba.

Những phút tiếp sau, hỏa lực tấn công của Chelsea vẫn được duy trì ở mức cao nhưng khả năng công phá là không nhiều. Nguyên nhân không hoàn toàn là do họ, mà đa phần vì lối chơi khá chặt chẽ của Reading (điều này từng được kiểm chứng ở các đây ít mùa giải, khi Reading còn thi đấu ở Ngoại hạng Anh). Bên cạnh khả năng bọc lót tốt của hệ thống phòng ngự, mành lưới đội chủ nhà còn được bảo vệ tối ưu bởi thủ thành Federici, với những pha xử lý chuẩn và ổn định.

Đang say đòn tấn công, phút 37, Chelsea bất ngờ dính đòn khi Reading phản pháo. Từ pha để mất bóng của Ashley Cole, Jay Tabb kết thúc từ ngoài cấm địa vô tình đưa đến chân Kebe. Tiền vệ đội chủ nhà không khó để đánh bại Petr Cech, đưa bóng vào lưới trống mở tỷ số.

Chưa dừng ở đó, ở phút thi đấu cuối cùng của hiệp một, lưới của Chelsea một lần nữa bị rung lên. Từ điểm đá phát khoảng 20 mét, Scott Davies kết thúc chìm chéo góc hiểm hóc, khiến Petr Cech dù đổ người vẫn chẳng thể cứu vãn. 2-0 đầy bất ngờ cho Reading.

Phải rất nỗ lực và may mắn, Chelsea (xanh đen) mới duy trì được mạch trận bất bại dưới thời Ancelotti.

Sau giờ nghỉ giải lao, cả thầy lẫn trò bên phía Chelsea đều sốt ruột. HLV Ancelotti liên tục điều chỉnh nhân sự khi tung lần lượt là Malouda, Alex và Bosingwa rồi Kalou, Belletti, Sturridge vào sân. Chừng một phút sau, chính từ quả đá phạt của Malouda, trung vệ đội trưởng Alex Pearce của Reading đánh đầu phản lưới nhà, giúp Chelsea có trận hòa 2-2 nhọc nhằn.

Để chủ nhà Reading dẫn trước tới hai bàn nhưng cuối cùng, Chelsea vẫn duy trì được thành tích bất bại dưới thời Ancelotti khi kịp gỡ hòa 2-2 ở những phút cuối nhờ pha lập công của Salomon Kalou và bàn “đốt lưới nhà” của hậu vệ Alex Pearce.

Trước đối thủ được đánh giá mạnh hơn hẳn, Reading lựa chọn chiến thuật phòng ngự phản công và ít nhiều gây khó dễ với The Blues. Sự xuất sắc của thủ thành Federici cũng như sự bọc lót kịp thời của các hậu vệ Reading khiến Chelsea không sao chuyển được ưu thế thành bàn thắng, dù Anelka hay Essien đã có những tình huống rất thuận lợi để phá vỡ bế tắc.

Tấn công mãi mà không ghi được bàn, Chelsea “sập bẫy” phản công của Reading và phải trả giá như một “chân lý” trong bóng đá. Phút 37, từ pha để mất bóng đáng trách của Ashley Cole, Jay Tabb cướp được rồi sút ngay ở ngoài vòng cấm. Bóng đập chân đổi hướng đến vị trí của Kebe và tiền vệ này dễ dàng lừa bóng qua Cech rồi đưa bóng vào lưới trống, mở tỷ số cho Reading.

Điều tồi tệ với Chelsea chưa dừng lại ở đó bởi ngay trước giờ nghỉ giải lao, đội chủ nhà đã nhân đôi cách biệt với pha sút phạt hàng rào tinh quái của Scott Davies. Bóng đi chìm chéo góc và rất căng khiến Petr Cech dù đã đổ người cũng không thể cản phá.

Sang hiệp hai, HLV Ancelotti có một loạt sự điều chỉnh khi đưa Malouda, Alex và Bosingwa vào sân rồi tiếp đến là Kalou, Belletti, Sturridge. Chelsea vẫn chơi ép sân nhưng hàng phòng ngự Reading thi đấu rất tập trung và không tạo nhiều khoảng trống cho đối thủ.

Tưởng như Ancelotti và các học trò sẽ phải chấp nhận thất bại đầu tiên trong chiến dịch chuẩn bị đầu mùa giải thì chỉ trong ít phút cuối trận, họ đã kịp có hai bàn thắng để quân bình tỷ số.

World Football Challenge là giải đấu giao hữu có sự góp mặt của các đội bóng tên tuổi như Chelsea (Anh), AC Milan, Inter (Italia), CF America (Mexico). Trước trận đấu này, đội bóng của HLV Ancelotti đã lần lượt vượt qua Inter 2-0 và Milan 2-1 đầy thuyết phục.

Trong cuộc đọ sức với America, dù đội bóng Mexico đã thi đấu rất ngoan cường và giữ sạch lưới trong hiệp 1 nhưng cuối cùng, Chelsea vẫn khẳng định sức mạnh với hai bàn thắng trong vòng 3 phút của Di Santo (75’) và Malouda (78’).

Tiền vệ đánh chặn số một của Chelsea được liên hệ đến Barca và Real. Ở diễn biến khác, Malouda quyết định từ chối Milan để ở lại với đội chủ sân Stamford Bridge.

Cách sống của ngôi sao sinh năm 1982 cũng gây được nhiều thiện cảm khi khá bình lặng và ít gây scandal.

Ở chiều ngược lại, Florent Malouda hôm qua đã đặt bút ký vào bản hợp đồng mới có thời hạn bốn năm, đến 2013. Giao kèo trước đó chỉ còn hai năm. Điều này đồng nghĩa với sự kết thúc trong mối liên hệ giữa tiền vệ người Pháp với Milan.

Ngôi sao 29 tuổi đến với đại gia thành London từ Lyon năm 2007 với phí chuyển nhượng là 13,5 triệu bảng, nhưng phải đến giai đoạn của Guus Hiddink, Malouda mới tìm lại được phong độ tốt nhất. Mùa trước, anh chơi 31 trận, ghi chín bàn thắng và cùng Chelsea giành Cup FA.

Al minuto nueve de partido, centra Lampard al aréa y tras un despeje viene Essien y la clava, con suerte, de una ocasión en dos partidos la clavan. En el minuto 21, falta sacada por Drogba y Valdés se encarga de sacarsela. Mientras, el Barça intentaba ser fiel a su estilo e intentaba crear oportunidades de gol que no llegaba. Desde el lado Blue, se empezaban a reclamar penaltis no pitados, uno de Alves a Malouda y otro de Abidal a Drogba.
En la segunda parte, parecía que el Chelsea salía un poco más entonado para intentar conseguir el segundo gol.
Y volvían a llover cánticos por las manos de Piqué, -que són involuntarias-, poco después expulsión a Abidal por un piscinazo de Anelka, depués dureza del Chelsea y el árbitro solo muestra ¡2 amarillas!, al Barcelona a la mínima prácticamente le caia una tarjeta. El partido ue bronco hasta el final con un posible penalti de Touré a Anelka y después la jugada del gol del Barcelona, centro de Alves, la controla mal Eto’o, intento de despeje por parte de Essien que se la deja a Messi este a Iniesta y a la red. El billete a roma estaba ahí, pero aún quedaba el último aliento del Chelsea, córner y otro posible penalti por manos d Eto’o y Stamford Bridge que se venía abajo, pero el tiempo no daba para nada más.
Valdés salvó al Barcelona de la eliminación en los peores momentos.

Após o empate sem gols no Camp Nou, as duas equipes precisavam da vitória para chegar à final. O Chelsea saiu na frente e nos acréscimos do segundo tempo, Iniesta empatou o jogo e confirmou a vaga na decisão da competição européia.

O jogo começou muito disputado e logo aos oito minutos, os Blues apresentaram o cartão de visitas aos espanhóis. Lampard iniciou a jogada e a bola sobrou para Essien, que encheu o pé e fez um golaço. O Barcelona não se intimidou e continuou partindo para cima. Em um jogo franco, o Chelsea também chegava à meta de Valdés com perigo. Em uma dessas oportunidades, Drogba quase ampliou o placar. O marfinense bateu falta e Valdés fez boa defesa. O primeiro tempo acabou e o grande erro dos espanhóis foi a falta de pontaria nas chances criadas.

O Chelsea voltou para a segunda etapa procurando o segundo gol para complicar a vida do Barça. E chances não faltaram. Drogba e Malouda perderam boas oportunidades. Os espanhóis sentiam a pressão dos Blues e em uma das investidas dos ingleses, o lateral esquerdo Abidal fez falta em Anelka e foi expulso. As coisas se complicaram para o Barcelona que continuava disperso em campo, longe das brilhantes atuações no campeonato espanhol e na própria Champions League. 

O juiz norueguês Tom Henning informou o auxiliar que daria quatro minutos de acréscimo. O Barcelona parecia entregue enquanto a torcida do Chelsea cantava e vibrava com a vitória e a possível vaga na decisão. Mas os minutos de acréscimos reservavam algo para a equipe de Pep Guardiola.

Aos 47 minutos, após um bate-rebate dentro da área, a bola sobrou para Eto’o no lado esquerdo da grande área. O camaronês não conseguiu dominar, a bola espirrou e chegou aos pés de Messi, que ergueu a cabeça e encontrou Iniesta na entrada da área. Iniesta encheu o pé e colocou a bola no ângulo de Cech, calando o estádio e deixando a equipe de Guus Hiddink desnorteada.

Foi um grande jogo. O Chelsea perdeu a chance de chegar a segunda final de Champions League seguida e tentar dar o troco no rival Manchester United, que venceu a competição nos pênaltis na temporada passada. Com o empate, o Barcelona confirma presença na grande decisão e enfrentará os Diabos Vermelhos em busca do tricampeonato do maior campeonato de clubes do Mundo.

O jogo entre espanhóis e ingleses acontece no próximo dia 27, em Roma, na Itália. Certamente será mais uma final sensacional e não vejo favorito. Independente de quem seja o vencedor, a única certeza é que o título estará em boas mãos. No momento, Manchester e Barcelona são as melhores equipes do mundo e mereceram chegar à final.

I know what Barca did to Real Madrid on the weekend.  I know Messi is supposed to be the player of this generation.  I know Iniesta and Xavi are incredibly talented midfielders and Eto’o is one of the best strikers in the world.  But the only things that are matter are these:

Barca has the away goals shut out of Chelsea in its favor.  If Barca scores at least one goal, Chelsea needs to win the game.

Messi is going to be determined to show he is the best in the world after the performance Ronaldo put on today.

The game is being played at Stamford Bridge where the pitch feels smaller than the Nou Camp which means less room for Messi and company to play their football.

No Marquez and no Puyol in the middle.  That means Pique, who for all his game is a relative rookie, and Caceres in the middle with the mercurial Valdes behind them.

Eric Abidal got skinned by first Robben and then Ramos for the first goal.  Hiddink, if I were you, I’d start Kalou on the right.  Dani Alves on the right is at best an average defender.

Henry might not play due to a knee injury.

Hiddink is a scarily successful coach no matter the squad he has – and he has a tough, experienced, motivated squad playing at home.

Based on these factors, while I still think its going to be tight, I think Chelsea goes through.

Guus, this is what you need to do to win.  As I said in the prior post, (1) water the pitch well to slow Messi down.  (2) Start Kalou on the right and Malouda on the left.  Lampard in the middle.  Drogba up front.  Essien and Mikel holding midfielders.  If you go one down, then bring on Anelka up front in the second half for Mikel.  For now, Ballack needs to start on the bench.  (3) Make sure Cole doesn’t give Messi the sideline – funnel him inside and then have Essien pick him up.  Not Mikel who gives away too many fouls on the edge of the box.  If Messi tries to go to the middle as he did against Real Madrid, even better for you.  That’s when you have Essien man mark him with Mikel sitting in a holding position behind him.  (4) If Henry doesn’t start, I believe Keita or Busquets will play in holding midfield along with Yaya Toure to help out the two kids at the center of defense.  Resist the temptation to play Ballack even with the reduced Barca team speed if Henry is out.  Yes, he may be good for headers off set pieces, but that’s a luxury you can’t afford in this game.  (5) Make sure Chelsea pumps more diagonal balls into the box.  See how Barca was all at sea during the Real game with crossed balls – they scored both goals on balls like that.  Cech was wasteful with his long clearances straight to Valdes.  (6) Keep possession better than you did at Barca.  Don’t be so nervous.  Barca isn’t that strong at pressing.  You play in the EPL.  You can hang with Liverpool and Man U.  Why be so concerned about Barca’s pressure up the pitch.  Pass your way out.  You always have Drogba to hold the ball up.

Pep, this is what you need to do.  (1) If Henry is out, then play Iniesta down the left and start Keita and Yaya at holding mid behind Xavi, Eto’o and Messi.  Hold Chelsea first, give cover and confidence to Pique and Caceres and wait for Messi to deliver.  If it’s tough going, then bring on Bojan for Keita and push Eto’o wide.  (2) Score a goal.  In fact, score two.  Because I think that’s what you are going to need to win with the defense you have for this game. (3) Shave and get a decent tie.  (4) Start Messi going up the middle to confuse the crap out of Chelsea’s backline and then move him back to the right.

Prediction:  Chelsea 2 Barcelona 1

Si la eliminatoria de Champions fuese el mapa de un tesoro, Londres sería la gran X que ocultase detrás la copa del Grial. En este caso no se trata de la copa de un carpintero, pero seguro que los jugadores blaugranas no la cambiarían por nada del mundo, y les conferiría esa clase de inmortalidad que solo se gana entrando en los libros de historia(deportiva, se entiende).

Londres es la ciudad del Big Ben, de ese Támesis donde cada año los chicos de Oxford disputan a los de Cambridge la supremacía remera, pero también es la ciudad en la que conviven Arsenal y Chelsea. Por ello, desde mañana y hasta el miércoles Londres se convierte en la capital mundial del fútbol. De un fútbol al que imploran los seguidores del Barça para disputar la finalísima de la Champions. Pero no será facil. No puede serlo si tenemos enfrente un muro como el del equipo blue, que ni siquiera se plantea la posibilidad de disimular su antifútbol y se enorgullece del pírrico partido realizado en el Camp Nou. La racanería rara vez es la mejor opción para llegar a la gloria, pero no hay que fiarse de un equipo con Drogba, Lampard, Essien, Maloudá…

Para los que esperen un partido diametralmente opuesto al de Barcelona, conviene decir que pueden seguir soñando. Claro que el Chelsea va a abrirse un poco más, pero sólo eso, un poco. El trivote alrededor de Xavi e Iniesta se mantendrá y Drogba estará más preocupado de tapar a Piqué y Touré que de sus opciones en ataque. Eso sí, que no tenga otra como la de Barcelona. Con Drogba tapando al medio marfileño, Essien, Ballack y Lampard se repartirán la zona ancha para tratar de oprimir la fantasía de Xavi e Iniesta. Como el Madrid, pero con tres armarios que nada tendrán que ver con la liviandad del medio campo merengue. Con el trivote, un jugador se encargará de tapar a cada jugón y el restante quedará libre para las ayudas. ¿Magistral?. Lo sería si el Barcelona no tuviera desborde por las bandas. Con esta fórmula cada error penaliza doble y, sin errores reseñables en el Camp Nou, se antoja imposible otro partido limpio en este apartado. Bastará con un regate de Messi, Etoó o Henry(me temo que los gastó todos el sábado) para generar un desequilibrio enorme. Sólo uno en 90 minutos(en el caso de Messi en 180). Regateado el defensor, el Barça necesita el segundo paso-milagro: que uno de los perros de presa encargados de la defensa individual se despiste una milésima de segundo, permitiendo llegar de segunda línea a un jugador blaugrana sin marca. Sólo una milésima en 90 minutos. Por ahí pasan las opciones del equipo español. ¿Es mucho pedir?.

Aparentemente no, y el hecho de que el Liverpool marcase 4 goles en Stamford Bridge debería espolear a los blaugrana en su búsqueda, pero que nadie se fie. Quizá lo que más miedo me genera de la eliminatoria se produjo el sábado. El 2-6 sentencia la liga, pero, ¿creará un exceso de confianza para Londres?. Es una pregunta que habría que hacerse y que los interesados nos contestarán el miércoles. Pero hay más preguntas: ¿Repetirá Hiddink planteamiento, o variará buscando sorprender a Guardiola?No me extrañaría nada de este viejo Rockero.¿Veremos a Messi en el centro?.¿Sería lo del Bernabeu una pose de Guardiola, o se trataría de un entrenamiento para Londres?. ¿Apostamos?.

ARSENAL-MANCHESTER

Resuelto el primer acto de la eliminatoria, el actual campeón parte con ventaja para revalidar final. Sin embargo, en el fútbol(como en todo), las meigas, haberlas haylas, y yo soy creyente. ¿Os habeis dado cuenta de cómo Oporto, Bayern y Olimpiakos se han ido cruzando en los éxitos europeos madridistas?. El problema es la doble texitura: Puede repetirse el Arsenal-Barça que coronó a los blaugranas no hace tanto, pero también la final del año pasado entre los diablos rojos y el malévolo Chelsea de Hiddink. De todos modos, las meigas son gallegas, así que tendrán que ayudarnos, ¿No?.

PD: Como veis no he mencionado los problemas en defensa del Barça, ni el pésimo partido en la ida de Alves. Y es que las cosas malas, mejor olvidarlas para centrarse en lo que uno hace bien: jugar. Por cierto, Henry está tocado y no ha entrenado hoy. De todos modos apuesto por él como titular, y por Abidal en el centro de la zaga. Good Luck!

Barcelona and Chelsea got the Champions League semi finals under way last night and it was probably the most anti-climatic game of the tournament so far. The game was hyped to such an extent in the media that it was always going to be hard for the players to live up to it but what they actually produced was well below the mark at this stage of the worlds premier club tournament. Anyone who has trouble sleeping should get a copy of this game to watch at bedtime because it could be just the tonic they need.

Chelseas approach was negative and defensive and it demolished any thoughts that this would be an open free flowing game. Any time Barcelona had the ball all the Chelsea players bar Didier Drogba were within thirty yards of their own goal. Their tactics really took the venom out of the game but it also shows that they lack the confidence to go and play football on the big stage. Chelsea have missed out on a massive oppurtunity to beat what was billed as the best attacking side in Europe due to their negative approach. Barca are weak at the back and Chelsea have the players to exploit that fact but they lack the confidence to do it.

Aside from Chelsea choking the life out the game with their negativity there weren’t many other talking points. The first twenty minutes was all Barca attacking but from there to the finish it was a stop start game. The referee was giving free kicks every other minute and the amount of diving and theatrics from both sides was enough to make any football purist sick to their stomach. Drogba as always was the main culprit as he hit the deck as if shot by a sniper on numerous occaisions only to jump back up if his side retained possession. Florent Malouda was another guilty party as he looked as if he has been taking lessons from Drogba on how to con referees and roll around on the deck to try and gain an edge for the team.

Part two of this borefest takes place next wednesday night at Stamford Brigde and if this travesty is anything to go by it would be best avoided by any neutral who wants to be entertained by free flowing football.
