Daniel Haaksman is about to release his second EP “Gostoso” with some new Baile Funk Electro Bingo Bongo stuff on it in 5 tracks. Release date is 7th of July.

pletely different ways. When Bambaataa used “Trans Europe Express” he created the electronic version of afro-american funk. In the U.S. this led to both Detroit techno and Miami bass. Electronic dance music in Germany wasnt very much influenced by “Planet Rock”, only when later, in it´s bastard child versions of Detroit techno or Chicago house. In Germany in contrary, e.g. DAF, was pretty straight and totally “white”. This preference has remained until today in large parts of the German dance music scene. There´s a few islands across Germany which follow afro-american music innovations, but the majority is completely self-centered. All the afro-american music innovations of recent years – bmore, chicago juke, etc. – werent registred over here. The same is for bubbling from Holland, which comes from a very vibrant black community.
DIPLO It´s great to mix with hard stuff, but by now it has become a no-word because for many years it has become really trendy. It´s a mix of Caribbean reggae and Dutch house, right in the middle.

You two have an ear for regional phenomenons. What is on your radar these days?

HAAKSMAN There´s hundreds of local dance music styles that are still to discovered. Tecno brega from Manaus for example. I´m currently into UK funky. Many of the UK funky guys come from Grime and they were fed of the clicheed strings and MCs. It´s sort of the UK answer to the breakbeat thunderstorm which poured over UK in recent years in forms of Kuduro, Soca, Baile Funk, Juke and Bmore.

DIPLO They want money, hehe! To be honest, I like UK funky, some of the instrumentals are great, like K.I.G.´s “Head, Shoulders, Kneez & Toez” has a good flow. But the majority of tracks sound to me like a cheap version of Bugz In The Attic. And when there´s “African” vocals, like (singing) “I play my conga”, then it sounds like the stuff my mother listens to when she visits a world music club night. At the same time it´s a mixed scene, with black and white kids, and that´s cool with me.

Crookers remix competition!

When the Crookers first starting pumping out the remixes they could do no wrong. Now they tend to have more misses than hits, though I have to say their attempt at remixing U2 had pretty much zero chance of being any good. Well if you’d like to show them how it’s done here’s your chance. Man Recordings is holding a remix competition. They want you to remix the Crookers track Social Ali Baba, which features Baile Funk MC Dandão. This competition is coinciding with a release of a compilation album called Funk Mundial. That album is released April 20, which is also the date submissions are due so you better get on it fast. The reward for the best three remixes is being digitally released by Man Recordings, where you will share in the sales as well as receiving some other unspecified goodies, which to me sounds like stickers and badges. So the prizes don’t sound as good as those for the Damn Arms remix competition that is currently being run but I’d say the international profile gained by the winning remixes will be a pretty decent prize.

so this joao brasil remix has been mentioned a number times by @ongakuclub on twitter, but the video to his lambada remix of n.a.s.a.’s “whatchadoin’” is worth mentioning on its own. i wonder how many times i am going to listen to this song/watch this video today…

Our mate from Lyon, Douster, is getting a bit big for his boots. He’s dropping a new release on the always-hectic Man Recordings for their Funk Mundial arm, along with Frikstailers, El Remolon and ZZK man of the moment Chancha Via Circuito. His tune sounds like some woozy military brass band with an organ DJ and Rio favela DJ fighting it out over the beats. You can tell he’s been living in Argentina for a while as well, the cumbia limp is present and correct, as well as kwaito drumming and pacman sounds…

Trying our best to push through the gruesome hangover from the weekend just gone, its funny there was actually nothing happening in Prague this weekend but its always the case that we end up getting more wasted.
Anyway bit late on this one but it still deserves a mention is the new <a href=”Edu K EP out now on Man Recordings, its funny how this passed us by because we’re huge fans of the Berlin based label and even launched our club night with label boss Daniel Haaksman on the decks… here’s the info straight from the horses mouth/blog

Daniel Haaksman was the first DJ to grace Dutty Weekend and the first DJ/producer/record label owner to bring Baile Funk to the masses in Europe. Alongside Diplo Daniel has had by far the biggest impact with spreading the Baile Funk sound and meanbucket will always love him for it. With the ‘Funk Mundial’ series he got together producers from Rio and Europe to produce some of the hottest tracks of the decade so it only seems right that he has produced his own e.p and they have certainly not dissapointed!
