I started writing my Managing People and Performance assignment too late. Now I am struggling with getting the argument, data, models and references right. I had to take one day off at work to get something done. Next time I will plan better and have the final draft ready well in advance for proof reading.

I am terribly annoyed when the authors in our MBA curriculum talk about the past without reflecting

I am terribly annoyed when the authors in our MBA curriculum talk about the past without reflecting more about it. For instance:

Prior to the 1970s the basic “deal” was that, in terms of employment, potential employees traded “loyalty” for a “job for life” and clear long-term career structure. (Higgs (2004))

In fact, this implies an acceptance of the notion of an “industrial society” as opposed to a present “post-modern society”. Do we have to accept that influential sociologists or philosophers such as Anthony Giddens label our world in this way?

My grand parents and my parents were all small-scale business owners or farmers. When labeling eras in boxes such as “industrial” and “post-modern” authors exclude from their concepts a considerable part of the population, who made a living, lived well and contributed to society outside factories, large corporate headquarters and government offices.

Higgs, M. (2004) Future trends in HR. In: D Rees & R McBain (eds) People Management: Challenges and Opportunities. Palgrave Macmillan. P. 19
