keano's influence tonight will be in the spotlight.

With Pavlyuchenko out of the picture and probably the first player moving this winter transfer window, eyes now move away from his input in our cup campaign; (which notably last season, included a spectacular finish against Manchester United). What this does mean however, is that the ever-prodigal son Robbie Keane is looking to state his claim on a starting berth despite certain critics suggesting pseudo-jovially that his contract prevented him from starting on the bench. Whilst the pairing of Defoe and Crouch in the last two games, (as well as the introduction of Kranjcar on the left) definitely payed dividends, Harry is a man who knows seemingly knows the recipe, and his insistance that Robbie should play the majority of the season thus far despite to the uneducated lacking the pinasche of his peers is an intelligence that shouldn’t be discounted.

What Robbie does offer; and many fans can testify to, is the winning mentality, (look above for evidence), and is notably one of the great characters in our dressing room. It can be said that he will never be the same Robbie that partnered Berbatov, and many fans are aggrieved by this very cold fact. But the truth is that it is not that he has left his heart in the cold corridors of Anfield; it is simply that without the aforementioned Bulgarian, (who’s form at Manchester is also indicative of this riddle), he’s missing the telepathic foil that led to his most memorable moves. Whilst after the fallout of the move-back it can now be said that Robbie’s heart is in generally back in the right place; (would you begrudge yourself a move to Spurs from Bolton if offered?) It is notable that he is now in the position where Spurs have the ability to achieve what Liverpool under the shifty guidance of Benitez will most probably fail to achieve this season, (save for massive economic restructuring or intervention). Hopefully this will buoy Robbie and allow him to become the player he always saw himself being; even if it is in a white shirt rather than a red one.

Notably; headlines seem to indicate that Redknapp is happy to state a claim that we’re aiming for a top four spot this season rather than success in cup competitions which over recent years seem to have provided a nice distraction from failures in the league. Whilst this is the best route for the club in terms of the economic growth and consolidation of assets, the fans might find coming short of that spot in the league a little disconcerting. However it does seem that at the helm of the club we have a great progressive figurehead in relation to Daniel Levy, who despite claims that he’s building up the club simply to sell it on is definitely taking the club forward in front of our very eyes. So at once the cups become a different beast entirely; once a sanctum of sorts for ‘our’ style of classic football competition without the over ruling presence of economies of scale and the shifty politics that come with it. Now it is a bit of a distraction from the commitments we have in the league; along with neverending issue of pleasing a squad that’s depth is nearly unparalleled in the rest of the league. Oh how things change and in such a short time.

Tonight’s match as such is seemingly underlined by both manager’s indifference to the competition. Redknapp whilst aware of the rewards of cup glory; especially for an underachieving club such as ours has his eyes set on another prize; whereas Fergie would only really consider a win in the final as a multiplier to beef up the accolades from more economically rewarding competitions. It has all the makings of being a great match.

No seriously; it should be good. Especially seeing as in our recent history Manchester United seem to have always been there causing heartbreak; and with the suggestion that Manchester United’s squad tonight will be somewhat a young muted side; we should be looking to take the game in a convincing and entertaining manner, as is our original style, (and not Arsenal’s might I add.)

Other notable appearances tonight should include Alan Hutton, Gareth Bale, Jermaine Jenas and David Bentley. All of which in my eyes are players of great potential with the ability to produce top performances. Bring on Macheda and Welbeck.

At the ripe old age of 35 its amazing that Ryan Giggs is still good enough to win the PFA player of the year award which he did in April this year. One of the reasons for his longevity is that he is constantly on the training pitch going through his paces.

One of the best training exercises for any winger is the training he does so he can get pinpoint accuracy on his crosses. His delivery in to the box is the right weight and direction almost every time.

The secret behind his success is this little exercise.

If you look at the diagram the coach had split the penalty area up into very tight squares numbered one to ten. When he called out a zone to Giggs the player had to cross the ball so it landed in that square. It was a very precise exercise, the coach had a lot of balls and played it to either position 1 or position 2 for Giggs to run onto and cross first time to the called out zone.

As I was coaching under 15s I could use all the zones but for younger age groups you could just shout near, far and penalty spot. There is also an opportunity to practice cutbacks where the player is crossing the ball back to the edge of the penalty area for players running in.

For players who cannot cross the ball very far it is good practice for them to run onto the ball and cross it using a good technique – they will soon progress.

As coaches we have all been through a period where we haven’t won for a few games and we begin to do

As coaches we have all been through a period where we haven’t won for a few games and we begin to doubt what we have achieved. Losing is a part of sport that we all must accept and I include myself in that.

However hard we try to achieve a winning team you must be realistic and accept that losing is something that happens to most coaches. Remember that for every game you win opposite you is a coach and team that have lost, so try to respect that and not be over enthusiastic in your celebrations.

I know sometimes it isn’t easy to keep your emotions in check. I can remember after losing three games in a row how fantastic it felt to win again and so did my players. Coaches must try to set an example to their players in victory and in defeat because young players are easily influenced by your reactions.

Watching Maradonna when Argentina won a place in the World Cup in the recent qualifying matches diving full length onto the pitch is a good example of what you shouldn’t do. When my team won the U10 title having been second all season I could easily have done the same. Thankfully I can look back at the occasion and see photos of smiling coaches not idiots!

Watch these clips, one of Maradonna when Argentina beat Uruguay to claim a place in the 2010 World Cup against the odds, the second clip shows the moment Argentina score (goooooooooooooooooooooal!) and Sir Alex Ferguson when his team scored twice in the final minutes to help them on the road to winning the Premier League in England in 1993.

"owww!" Wasn’t expecting that. Not at all. Well. Ok, maybe from watching the game yo

"owww!"

Wasn’t expecting that. Not at all. Well. Ok, maybe from watching the game you could argue that after Defoe took his goal with a bicycle kick, (something that would cause the majority of Spurs fans to erupt in one way or another); the fact that Berbatov had obviously dived to gain the free kick that Giggs slotted home was a trifle unfair. Simply put; there was no contact whatsoever and Berbatov went down like Newcastle. Without much grace whatsoever. Despite the fact that any Manchester United game will involve the referee being crowded round by a flock of Manchester United players pleading for ‘injustice’ to be punished fiercely. What’s more with Wilson’s here-or-there challenge being deemed worthy of a yellow card in the second half; his withdrawal caused us all sorts of problems in the midfield as once again we found ourselves clutching at straws in the midfield.

For the most part; we would have been lucky to have nabbed a draw; and whether these decisions have altered the game either way are besides the point. What was noticed was that with our two star players out for the majority of the game; and with accumulated fatigue blighting the rest of our internationally productive squad; it was a bit of a nightmare. All things considered I’d rather we have dropped points to Manchester United at this stage than one of our more close rivals; and with the squad waking from their ‘dream’ start; we can now get down the pragmatic reality of the rest of the season. If I were a sneaky minded Sir Alex Ferguson I may have targeted Palacios for a shady yellow; and worked towards dissecting the team through set pieces. But that would be too much of a coincidence wouldn’t it?

On the bright side; who would you rather have in white; Defoe or Berbatov? Yeah; I thought you’d like that question.

For Chelsea away; I would hope that the plan would be to maximize the cohesiveness of the squad in attempt to get something from the game; prior to heading into more of the business end of the season; as we find ourselves having to take points from the likes of Sunderland and Bolton.

Player Ratings

Cudicini – 6.7 – Looked good between the sticks; and managed to avert a rout with some fine shot stopping saves. Can’t help but think that Gomes would have been able to reach both of the goals though; as he has saved similar before last season. For me Gomes will be 1st choice for Chelsea if fit. As he is potentially the better keeper once he sorts out his composure issues.

Benoit Assou-Ekotto – 6.0 – Looked fine going forward, and alright at the back defensively. Though he was not really a dissuading influence; as play seemed to find itself down the wing more often than not. That on top of a busy midfield; caused us our problems today.

Bassong – 6.2 – Bread and butter defending for Seb today; though Anderson’s goal was the product of a sloppy clearance that should have been closed down faster. Simply put it’s those kind of chances you cannot afford to put on a plate for teams in the sky 4.

King – 5.8 – Looked slightly leggy from recovery of his groin injury; however was a far better option at the back that moving Corluka over and playing Hutton; as Corluka’s inconsistency at centre-back can always cause problems.

Corluka -5.9 – Looked fairly composed at the back until he had a ring ran around him leading to a goal. Whilst it is fair to say that his cool head under pressure has saved us many times; he must be more ccareful of complacency; as he has the potential to be resolute if he concentrates better.

Lennon – 6.2 – Taken out of the game for the most part; people now know what he is capable of so as such he needs to shake up his game a bit; which he is doing by being more explosive and unpredictable. Sadly didn’t happen too much for him today.

Palacios – 6.7 – Looked great today until he received his booking and was subsequently taken off the pitch as a precaution; whilst the replay displayed his innocent. His absence in the second half was evident due to our lack of industry. He didn’t look good on the bench whatsoever.

Huddlestone – 6.3 – Looks great partnering Wilson; as he knows he has a safety net and can play his game. With Wilson sitting out the second half, Tom found himself in charge of giving Fletcher and Anderson the run around. Whilst he’s getting quicker. He’s not that quick yet.

Keane – 5.6 – He’s not a winger. Hasn’t got the skill to really take on players with more that two touches at the moment; and as such was a pretty useless option on the left. Doesn’t look like he has those twenty goals a season in him anymore either.

Defoe – 6.5 – Great bicycle kick to put the early pressure on Utd, and had a fair few chances to make an impact with a few saved shots. If we can crack the service to him in the way that our wingers have, down the middle then the goals will keep coming. It’s a bit of a shame to see him isolated when the centre of the field are having problems.

Crouch – 6.0 – Had a few good chances to score; and he always will in a game, because of his physique and first touch. However he’s pretty useless holding up the ball in the middle third and with our play pressured by their high defensive line; and a particularly aggressive Mr. Vidic. He didn’t find the net today.

SUBS

Jenas – 5.8 – Flattered to deceive. Had one opportunity on goal which was saved well; but otherwise finds himself anxious with a lack of craft on the ball. Soon to be replaced by…

Krancjar – 6.0 – A bit nervy with his passing on his debut; but looking a far better option that Jenas once he nails down the centre/attacking midfield role in our squad. First touch has the potential to be very useful.

Hutton – 6.3 – For me; he’s becoming the first choice right-back the more and more he plays. Not quite showing his true potential yet; but could give Charlie problems if he doesn’t sharpen up.

Next Game: Chelsea Away – Building on the weak performance here will be the task in hand. Anything take from the game should be seen as a bonus. In other news; it is rumoured that the Sandro deal will be completed in the January window; which means that there won’t be so much pressure on Wilson towards the end of the season.

In pratica Carletto Ancellotti dovrà accontentarsi dell’attuale rosa sino a Gennaio 2011.

Posiciones: Chelsea y Tottenham 12 pts ; Manchester Utd. 9; Manchester City (*) 9; Stoke 7; Arsenal (*), Liverpool, Aston Villa (*), Sunderland y Burnley con 6; West Ham (*) 4; Birmingham, Wolverhampton y Hull 4; Fulham (*), Everton (*) y Wigan 3; Blackburn (*) 1; Bolton (*) y Portsmouth 0.

(*) Tienen un partido pendiente por la segunda fecha.

I can sit for hours and argue that a good coach can mean the difference between winning and losing,

I can sit for hours and argue that a good coach can mean the difference between winning and losing, and then a good coach makes the headlines by struggling at their new club.

The victory by Burnley over Manchester Utd is important for coaches of youth teams for a number of reasons. First Manchester Utd lost! But seriously I can take this result with me and talk to my players about it at training.

Burnley beat Man Utd… Never! they would have said before the game. Now they can see that you can beat the unbeatable teams at the top of the league. It can help inspire them to great feats over their own unbeatable teams they will face in the coming season.

But it also shows how tactics and good coaching can produce results like this. Pitting your wits against Sir Alex Ferguson is difficult at the best of times but playing him with a less gifted team is a nightmare and yet Owen Coyle the Burnley manager has managed to do it.

He has got Burnley promoted and now they are gracing the Premier League with style and good football. I will watch them with interest over the coming months. And especially when Burnley go to Old Trafford and see what Sir Alex Ferguson has in store for them next time.

So we’re warming up for the new football season here in the UK, with teams across the country

So we’re warming up for the new football season here in the UK, with teams across the country getting in some pre-season friendlies and generally trying to get fit again.

Millwall have the potential hangover of a playoff final defeat lingering but the signs seem good so far in pre-season.

One problem we will have is with our defence depending on how the next few days/weeks pan out.

With our captain Paul Robinson and right back Danny Senda both injured it doesn’t help that Zak Whitbread wants a transfer (not takers so far though) as it effectively leaves us with 4 or 5 defenders to fill 4 positions… which just isn’t enough. Hopefully we may sign a few more players before the season starts on Saturday.

And it’s a tough game, Southampton away – one of the ‘big three’ (Southampton, Norwich, Charlton) who were relegated from the Championship last year.

Add in Leeds, MK Dons, Tranmere and Oldham (amongst others) and League One is shaping up to be very competetive indeed.

I’m tipping Leeds and MK Dons for automatic and hoping we can make the playoffs again and maybe win it this time.

In the Championship it’s all about Newcastle – either they are tipped for the title or generally being laughed at. I don’t think they will get automatic but they have enough strength in depth to make the playoffs… depending on who they put in charge.

For the other teams that came down I expect West Brom will be up there and for Middlesbrough I think it hinges on the impact of Alves and new signing Leroy Lita. If those two fire there is no reason they can’t push for promotion straight back up.

Reading and Derby will both be dangerous and it’ll be interesting to see what Roy Keane gets out of the players at Ipswich.

In the Premier League the apparent loss of Alonso at Liverpool will really hurt their title chances despite the threat of Gerrard and Torres.

Manchester United will have to work extra hard to retain the title, although the shrewd signing of Michael Owen could tip the balance in their favour if he stays fit. Chelsea’s new coach has a lot of work to do but has the squad to push even harder for the title in 2010, along with that elusive Champions League trophy.

You can never write off Arsenal but their 4th place is really under threat from the likes of Aston Villa, Everton, Manchester City and even Spurs.

I suspect Hull have had their time in the Premier League unless Jimmy Bullard returns in top form and I’d tip Burnley (as much as I’d love them to stay up) and Wolves or Wigan to join them in the drop – but there will be plenty of teams dragged into the fight.

Down in League Two it seems to be another competitive, tight league and I suspect you’ll be looking at three from Barnet, Bournemouth, Dagenham & Redbridge, Crewe, Rotherham, and Bradford for the promotion places but I expect Northampton and Port Vale to also be strong.

Grimsby need a change of fortunes to avoid being sucked out of the league along with Shrewsbury who have been treading water in League Two of late.

It’ll be interesting to see if Burton and Torquay can survive, with the latter looking more likely.

It’s looking like a great season ahead in all the leagues and I’ll be keeping an interested eye on everything that’s going on as the season progresses.

By ALEXANDER LAWRIE SCOTTISH football legend Jim Leishman is to become a grandad for the first time

By ALEXANDER LAWRIE

SCOTTISH football legend Jim Leishman is to become a grandad for the first time – just months after losing his wife to cancer.

Big Leish’s daughter Kate has delighted the former-Dunfermline manager with the news she is expecting a baby next year.

The Fife club’s director of football has admitted he is “chuffed to bits” about the impending debut from the new member of his family.

Mary Leishman passed away in February aged just 53 after being diagnosed with the killer disease last September.

Overwhelmed with support

Leishman – one of Scottish football’s most colourful characters – was by her side when Mary lost her fight for life on the loving couple’s 30th wedding anniversary.

At the time, the dad-of-two admitted he was overwhelmed with support after receiving hundreds of condolence messages from, among others, the Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Sir Alex Ferguson and the checkout girls at his local Asda.

Following his wife’s death Leishman helped to set up a charity in her honour and completed an 81-mile trek around Fife to raise cash last month.

Leishman, 55, said: “It’s great news and I’m really pleased for Kate and Gordon. We’ve told all our mates and everyone is chuffed to bits.

“[Following Mary’s death] it’s not all been bad and there have been a lot of pluses too.

“The walk was first class and I’m glad we’ve managed to raise so much money for the charity.”

Leishman was first appointed Pars manager in 1983 and led them to a lengthy stay in the Premier League.

He controversially left the club in 1990 and continued his managerial success by leading Livingston into the top flight for the first time in their history.

He returned to his beloved Dunfermline in 2004 as director of football and took over as interim manger for the last three games of the season saving the club from relegation in the process.

The following season he took the Pars to the Hampden for the League Cup final before returning to the post of director of football.

By ALEXANDER LAWRIE SCOTTISH rugby chiefs are following in the footsteps of the world’s top football

By ALEXANDER LAWRIE

SCOTTISH rugby chiefs are following in the footsteps of the world’s top football clubs by installing state-of-the-art grow lights for their new Murrayfield pitch.

The artificial growth lighting system has been developed by a rose enthusiast in Holland who has transferred the pioneering concept to growing grass.

After a trial with his local side PSV Eindhoven the Dutch horticulturalist’s innovative system has been adopted by top football clubs including Manchester Utd, Barcelona and Celtic.

The mobile lighting arms are easy to manoeuvre around the pitch meaning they can be applied to specific parts of the playing surface.

The Home of Scottish Rugby’s surface was removed and recycled in May after the last tournament of the season – the Emirates Airline Edinburgh Sevens Festival.

And just prior to last month’s huge Oasis gig at the stadium the entire area was re-seeded.

Major facelift

Mark Laidlaw, Murrayfield Stadium manager, said: “The pitch held up well last season and, with new lights, we will now be able to grow grass during the winter months, ensuring it will be in great shape for the seasons ahead.”

The Edinburgh stadium is also undergoing a major facelift with the removal and relocation of some of the ground’s turnstiles, along with a new welcome area.

A spokesman admitted the new turnstiles were a result of customer feedback, with many supporters claiming the existing turnstiles were too slow and unable to cope with the huge crowds the stadium regularly pulls.

Rugby chiefs have welcomed the “significant investment” which was announced yesterday. (Tues)

Inside the stadium, the hospitality areas are also to be refurbished and the developments will see improvement to the disabled facilities at the ground.

The new work follows on from the introduction of two high spec LED screens and digital scoreboards and the £2 million upgrading of Murrayfield’s four back pitches.

Concert ban demand

Moves have been made recently to ban major rock concerts from the stadium after last month’s Oasis gig descended into violence.

Residents complained about music fans’ anti-social behaviour and an emergency motion was put forward to the city’s council to prohibit any future events.

Councillors threw out the motion after deciding it was not an emergency matter and SRU bosses have warned a ban on concerts could cost Edinburgh businesses millions of pounds.

England’s chances of winning the World Cup in South Africa got a massive boost when Sir Alex Ferguso

England’s chances of winning the World Cup in South Africa got a massive boost when Sir Alex Ferguson decided to take a huge gamble and sign Michael Owen.

Manchester Utd have not played with a goal poacher since Ruud van Nistelrooy was sold to Real Madrid and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hung up his boots.

But it will take all the coach’s finest attributes to change the fortune of a striker who has not scored since January and was unable to score goals to prevent Newcastle being relegated.

England could do with a fired up Owen if he finds his goal scoring touch again. There are few goal poachers in the England set up, indeed there are few in the English Premier League with the exception of Jermaine Defoe.

England manager Fabio Capello will be watching with interest. So will I. A coach can do such a lot for players and if Owen fits in at Manchester Utd expect to see a different player when he runs out on the pitch. At Newcastle his head was often down and that was evident in his play.

A coach can restore confidence and give a player their touch back. Remember when he was scoring goals for fun for England, Liverpool and Real Madrid? Here’s a reminder:
