Tuesday – Mancora, Peru

Bad roads and a new country meant for a long day, but it turned out great

I had plans to start moving a bit faster as I was hoping to reach my goal of Ushuaia by New Year, the original plan of being there by Xmas is out the window. So, I chuffed off, my destination today was Trujillo, but I had a border crossing and was unsure of the delay there. The first bit of the ride from Loja was easy through the sealed twisties, a bit better than yesterday’s effort. There were quite a few shrines and crosses on the side of the road, a reminder that corners need to be taken, no short cuts please!

About an hour into the drive after some more nice windy roads, I get to a Y junction. Now, here was where I made a mistake I think, I followed the road to the right towards Machala and onwards to Huaquillas, which is a border crossing town on which I had information.

Now, the route that I had entered into my Garmin told me I should have gone left here, but the signs definitely said right so I ignored the Garmin, it had old info anyway right! Well, after riding a brand new concrete slab for a ways, I was eventually stopped by road works and then the road just went missing, it was a gravel road, badly maintained, in fact it seems as if they had removed the road prior to concreting it

After riding like this for a while I eventually decided it was not a minor crap road but it was going to continue for a long time, so I stopped and reduced the tyre pressures. The road stayed about the same with occasional crappy paved sections for ages, past all these small villages with huge chook pens all around, this must be the chook country of the world, I have never seen so many, or smelt so many as well!

I stopped for some lunch around half 12 or so, I am now way behind my expected arrival at the border town which I had expected to be midday. I think in retrospect I should have taken the left hand fork back there which would have matched my route, so if anyone is following me and reads this, turn left and tell me how that road was After lunch more dirt road for a short while, watch out for bloody cows until I got back onto the main PanAm highway where of course I now run into cops stopping people to look for paperwork, this chap waved me through though

Then I arrive at Huaquillas where I decided to test the waters with regard the new border crossing. This is where the sign on the main highway says turn left to Peru and I had heard that this not the way to go as the buildings were not complete. The info was months old, so it did no harm to check it out. Of course I get into Peru and now have a fair way to go as there is nowhere to turn around until you get to the police checkpoint. Here I was advised to go back and get the paperwork sorted [ for future reference, I have since found out this border point will be open in February 2010, but only for buses and trucks, and then later cars, motorcycles will always have to use the following route, so I would suggest going to a different border crossing at Macara, further east and south.]

So, after heading into Huaquillas, I go past the toll booth(waved through no charge) and on the left hand side of the road about 200m further up is a small building with shade tents out the front. This is where I have to fill out a form to leave, and get my passport stamped out, easy so far

Now I need to get the bike VIP cancelled, the info I had was to go through the market and find the Aduana which is 4km up the road, I did so and thought I had found the right place.

But no, this is not the right place, some people said I had to go back to the immigration , some said no it is over there, in the end a chap on a bike said follow me, through some dodgy side streets and eventually I am outside the tourist bureau opposite another Aduana, just before a bridge into Peru! I had forgotten about the bridge, but there are no signs, so once again for those following, here is the GPS co ords for the Aduana.

Hopefully that will help, although I would go a different border next time. Once here they took my paperwork and that was it, free to ride over the bridge. This is where I asked at the TUR office about the new road and was told the bikes have to come through here.

After riding into Peru, I travel another 2km until I reach the Peru Aduana on the left where I have to park my bike. Now this is silly, because I now have to walk further up the road until I find the immigration building on the left(arrow) where I go in and get my passport stamped in, arrow 1 in photo, after that I go to door two, arrow 2 and get that stamped page photocopied and take this back to where I parked the bike and start to process the bike paperwork. The reason I say it is silly is because normally immigration is before the Aduana, but not here.

After a bit of paperwork which I have to fill out, not them, I get the VIP for Peru. There was no check of the bike for numbers and no money changed hands. I also asked about insurance for Peru but was told this is not needed, so fair enough, now I have lots of smiling officials looking at the bike and I get to ride away and for a change I have straight roads, so I can maybe make up some time

As I was near the coast it had started to warm up, in fact it had been warm for a while, I had descended from 2500m down to near zero, but after an hour spent at the border, I was now short of daylight. It was after 3.30 and so I shortened my day from Trujillo to Mancora and that was still two hours or so away by the looks. The sea views were quite hazy and the villages I went through were a lot poorer looking than any I had seen before and I was starting to get into desert land as well.

So, just on 5pm and I arrive at Mancora, here I rode around looking for hotels and eventually a young chap riding a motortaxi said he would show me a resort that had internet and secure bike parking. As I was now in a different country, I had new money to play with, Sols this time and after a look around at the beach resort I paid the $100S($37US and was too much but I did not care at this stage) and was soon relaxing and watching a seaside sunset

After that excitement I sat down in the bar place all by my lonesome with a beer,[ of course, a new beer in a new country] and sorted some stuff out on the internet and found a new bit of pussy to play with

I had a few beers and then found out they do not do any food except sandwiches, so I ordered one and asked for ham and cheese toasted, hmm what a silly boy I am, they have no idea what I wanted. I ended up with two bits of bread, slightly warm and I think she heated it up with a lighter, it had not even changed colour and there was no butter and the cheese was warm but not melted! It soaked up a few beers though and after she nicked off, I turned off the terrible crap music she was playing real loud and listened to my own stuff from the PC for a few hours while I did a blog post. Tomorrow I was heading south and I had info from AL at the Barking Spider to stay north of Trujillo about 12kms as Trujillo itself was a shit town. Fair enough, another longish day, but it looked a like a reasonably straight run with no twisties so I should be able to make some distance. I have been on the HUBB and it seems there are some bikers in front of me and some behind, all within a few days of each other, so there may be meetings soon

Mancora beach

After well over a month in Peru, it was hard to believe I was finally at my last stop in the country. And it was also one I’d been looking forward to for a while: the beach!

Mancora is known as being the beach to go to for travelers. It has great surfing as well as a reputation for being sunny and warm all year round. Luckily, it lived up to its reputation! After a couple days under gray skies in Huanchaco, I was happy to arrive, already, at 6 in the morning to a bright blue sky and shining sun.

I stayed at the Loki hostel in Mancora, which is brand new (actually celebrated it’s first birthday my first night there, with fireworks and everything!) and was built to be a  hostel but looks like a resort. The buildings are blindingly white and funky-nice looking, and there’s a big pool with lounge chairs and a poolside bar all right in the center. So we got to feel like we were staying at a resort (minus the bunkbeds and lockers in the room) while paying hostel prices. Very nice!

There I met back up with two Australian girls, Lauren and Kassia, who I’d met in Lima and run into in Huaraz. I split my days between walking and relaxing on the beach and laying by the pool getting a tan. Not a hard life. The hostel itself was kind of a strange crowd, though, and even their big one-year bash wasn’t really that great. I hung out mostly with the Aussie girls and we didn’t really meet a lot of other friendly people (at least, of course, until the day we were leaving!)

It was nice to be by the beach and relax, though. Again I still felt that it would have been more fun if I’d been with friends. I was constantly thinking back to great times I’d had on beaches back home, in Southeast Asia, in Australia, etc. with good friends. Mancora just couldn’t live up to those memories!

The upside though was the sea was beautiful, I got a bit tan, and I finally started to feel like I was ready to actually DO something besides being a bit lazy. Though at the same time I wasn’t feel incredibly excited about Ecuador and the next five weeks (which I had quickly come to find was far too long to spend in Ecuador).

But lucky for me, the Australian girls were heading up to Ecuador the same day I was, to Cuenca as well. It’s always nice to have someone to share long (8-9 hour) bus rides and border crossings with.

So a little after noon we were on the Cifa International bus heading toward the border. This was the recommended bus by all the guidebooks, but that far from meant it was nice! First thing I was stuffed into a seat next to a woman with her naked baby, who was kicking me and screaming and breastfeeding all at the same time. Later it turned out that apparently she hadn’t paid for a bus ticket and she had to get up, at which time we discovered the baby had pooped everywhere, and it dripped on my seat as she left. Ugh. Not not NOT a pleasant experience at all — thank goodness Kassia had some baby wipes to lend me to wipe off my seat!

The bus ride was more bearable after the woman and the baby were gone, but it was still really crowded and uncomfortable overall. And then after we crossed the border out of Peru, they still made us switch buses! (The apparent reason for taking Cifa was that you didn’t have to do so.) Luckily the Pullman bus we switched into was much, much nicer and not at all crowded so I could have two seats all to myself. Then it was a matter of crossing the border into Ecuador (where they just print a bunch of numbers and words onto your passport instead of giving a nice stamp!) and another five hours driving up to Cuenca.

Cuenca is a really lovely city. You would never even know it was the third largest in Ecuador. It feels very small and safe, which we could tell immediately even arriving late at night. We took a taxi to a random hostel out of our guidebook, Hostal Monarca, where they only spoke Spanish so it was lucky I could understand most parts of it (though later one miscommunication about where to leave the room key meant we had to pay an extra $3 which was ridiculous.) The three of us were shown to a gigantic room that had four double beds in it (but room for probably ten!) and we all took a moment to collapse and roll around in our big beds.

Then it was out to see the town a bit and grab some dinner. We headed to a place called Blue Monday, where we had some fairly good (but incredibly filling) Mexican food. Then we grabbed dessert at an infamous hot chocolate place called Cacao & Canela. The guidebook had mentioned they had tons of hot chocolate flavors, including mozzarella. I decided I had to order it and see what it meant, but it turned out to mean they just served you a number of slices of cheese on the side. I even tried tossing a few into my (still incredibly delicious!) hot chocolate, but there wasn’t really much mozzarella flavor going on. It was still really good though.

The next day we decided to explore Cuenca. We visited the tourist information office, had breakfast, and walked around the main square, the markets, and along the river all in just a few hours. All of us were feeling just a bit tired and blah. After laying on the beach for a few days, the long hours of traveling and moving up in altitude were taking their toll on us.

Cinema!

Then we discovered the most perfect cure in Kassia’s guidebook: a cinema! And not just any cinema, but a cinema with a food court! Having felt a bit homesick the past few days, this was EXACTLY what I needed. We were so excited, we took a taxi to the place across the river because we couldn’t stand to take the time to walk. The taxi dropped us in front of every long-term-traveler-missing-home’s dream: a mini mall. We immediately grabbed lunch at KFC (which of course was absolutely nothing like the KFC at home, but still “popcorn” chicken and french fries hit the spot!) and bought tickets to see a movie.

We originally went to watch some Scrooge movie with Jim Carey that none of us had ever heard of, but because it was a kid’s movie it was in Spanish so we switched theaters and saw “I Love You Man” instead, which I had seen but it was a long time ago, in South Carolina, at a drive-in so it was almost like seeing a new movie! We walked out of the cinema an hour and a half later much, much happier and more rejuvenated people. And then on the walk home we ran into a guy we’d met in Mancora (well, actually the girls had originally met him in Argentina) and agreed to meet him for dinner later.

The rest of the day was spent doing more relaxing, and then going for a really delicious dinner at a tapas placed called Cafe Eucalyptus. Overall, it was a really great “breather” day for us all. And Cuenca was the perfect place for it. It was a very beautiful and tranquil town. Not at all stressful or overwhelming, a perfect way to begin our time in Ecuador.

Now I’m in Baños, and I already love it! So far we’ve already had some really amazing food and had a eucalyptus steam bath, which is an interesting but good experience. Now we’re off to see about some whitewater rafting and whatnot, but I’ll do a full Baños update later.

Nora Tschirner interpreta a una tímida profesora de preescolar cuyo cuadriculado mundo se desmorona cuando, tras montar un tremendo escándalo en una boda, un paparazzo es condenado a 300 horas de trabajos para la comunidad y tiene que cumplirlas precisamente junto a ella. El problema es que el paparazzo en cuestión, Ludo (Til Schweiger), fue compañero suyo de colegio y se dedicaba a hacerle la vida imposible. Claro que, bien pensado, quizá ésta sea una ocasión perfecta para ajustar cuentas con él siempre y cuando el amor, tan meticón él, no se entrometa.

EL PLACER (11/11) Max Ophüls, 1952

Tres historias sobre el placer. En la primera, un extraño hombre acude a un popular baile de máscaras en París y baila hasta caer extenuado. Un doctor lo atiende, descubriendo con sorpresa que tras la máscara se oculta un anciano. Cuando el doctor lo lleva a su domicilio, la esposa del viejo le narra al galeno la triste historia del bailarín. En la segunda historia, un famoso artista se enamora de Josephine, su bella modelo. Él sólo pinta retratos de ella, y alcanza el éxito, pero su historia de amor tiene un final trágico. En el último de los cuentos, Madame Tellier, que regenta un prostíbulo, es invitada por su hermano Joseph a la primera comunión de la hija de éste. Lla dama cierra el negocio durante un fin de semana y acude al evento religioso en compañía de sus pupilas a la granja lejana de Joseph. Tras una emotiva ceremonia, donde las mozas son la admiración del pueblo, regresan de nuevo al ejercicio de su oficio con el regocijo de todos los hombres que, desesperados, las echaban en falta.

SIMÓN DEL DESIERTO (11/11) Luis Buñuel, 1965

El estilita Simón se ha mantenido en penitencia de pie sobre una columna por más de seis años. Un rico devoto le obsequia una mejor columna y Simón realiza el milagro de devolverle las manos a un mutilado. Durante varios días, Simón continúa en penitencia mientras el diablo se le aparece tratando de tentarlo.

Un peligroso asesino, apodado Barba Azul, tiene aterrorizados a los habitantes de París. You haven’t heard from me in over a week, but I have a very good excuse: I’ve been in Peru! Full disclosure: I wrote this post a week ago, but literally haven’t had a second free at the computer since I returned. I hear Machu Pichu is incredible, but I didn’t visit. Nor did I journey to the southern metropolis of Lima. I didn’t see the Andes, or the Amazon. No, I spent my week in the department of Tumbes, near the Ecuadorian border—a region of roughly 250,000 that’s barely earned itself a place on the map, let alone the Internet.

My good friend Robyn has called this place home for the last year, serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in nearby Pampas de Hospital, a town of 4,000 that only has running water for a few hours each day, and two paved roads (one of which was recently completed). Cuerpo de Paz placed Robyn in Pampas as a health volunteer, teaching community members about the dangers of AIDS and (a bit) about American culture. This is the real Peru.

As I sit in the bus station awaiting my malodorous chariot to the developed world (Guayaquil, Ecuador) to catch my flight back to the States, I see life in the third world pass me by. After just five minutes at the station, it’s clear just how much I take for granted—I see mototaxis rushing customers around town for 1 sol (about 33 cents), corrupt policemen making their rounds, a pair of emaciated dogs, and a small herd of chickens. I see a man crossing the busy Pan American highway while holding an infant and digging for nasal gold (picking your nose is perfectly acceptable in Peru). I see homes with walls of bamboo and mud. I see countless kilos of refuse. But I don’t see tourists.

The city of Tumbes is no tourist destination—in fact, several guidebooks (and plenty of Internet resources) specifically warn against stopping there! Bus passengers pass through on their way to Lima, some 20 hours to the south, but few people who end up in Tumbes do so intentionally. Think Tijuana, but without the Gringos. The city is dangerous (Robyn wouldn’t let me out of her sight the entire week), but my journey to this developing city makes me appreciate the opportunities we have so much more. I know quite a few people, like myself, who would benefit from living here, if only for a week.

Robyn’s site, Pampas de Hospital, is even further removed from the Western world. Her host family shares a bathroom with several neighbors, filling the tub once a day so the neighboring families have enough water to bathe (using a bucket), drink, and use in their kitchens—which would surely violate every NYC health code imaginable. The schools teach English, but I didn’t meet anyone actually able to speak the language, and some students drop out in their early teens, though attrition rates continue to drop. Uneducated children will stay for life, while those fortunate enough to attend college or technical school will be the first to leave, taking their knowledge and valuable skills to Lima.

But this simple, luxury-free lifestyle brings the town together, with a community unlike any found in the States. The people of Pampas are among the most generous I’ve ever encountered, opening their homes to me, making sure I was full enough to burst (Robyn’s family killed a duck in my honor), and making it clear that my visit, let alone Robyn’s, wouldn’t be forgotten. I showed them pictures of Manhattan, as they looked over my shoulder in awe. We are so incredibly fortunate to live in a country where potable water comes from a tap, where people celebrate diversity, where vegetables make it to the dinner table each and every day.

While I wouldn’t suggest vacationing in the city of Tumbes, the department (like a state in the US) as a whole is incredible. Nearby Punta Sal is quite possibly the most beautiful beach town I’ve visited, and the town of Mancora, while technically in the neighboring department of Piura, is swarming with surfing Westerners, there to take advantage of incredible swells and excellent weather year round. If you’re in need of a “serious wake up call,” consider dropping by the city of Tumbes for a few days. I’m sure Robyn would be more than happy to show you around.

The towns of Punta Sal and Mancora, located on Peru’s northern coast, offer some of the finest beaches in South America. A world-renowned surfing destination with up to 9-foot waves, Mancora is located in the department of Piura. The town draws tourists from the Americas and Europe as well. I visited Mancora towards the end of my Peru trip, after spending several days in the department  and city of Tumbes, so I was surprised to see Westerners in northern Peru (I had seen only two “Gringos” in Tumbes). If you happen to be driving from Ecuador to Lima, I’d suggest stopping in Mancora, about 7 hours south of Guayaquil and 90 minutes south of Tumbes.

Just 30 minutes to the north, Punta Sal is an oasis in the department of Tumbes, offering some of the cleanest beaches I’ve seen anywhere in the world, let alone in Peru. While other beaches in the department are very unsafe and littered with garbage, Punta Sal is simply gorgeous. I spent two nights at Club Punta Sal, which was incredibly inexpensive by American standards ($84 per night for a suite, including meals), but out of reach for most Peruvians. It can be difficult to get to the hotel (the nearest airport in Tumbes requires a connection in Lima and is located an hour to the north), but it’s definitely worth the trip if you’re able to stay for several days. Club Punta Sal is far nicer and less expensive than any resorts I’ve visited in Mexico or the Caribbean, with excellent service and amenities.

De norte a sur, de Tumbes a Tacna, desde el límite con el Ecuador hasta la frontera con Chile, la costa peruana –franja cimbreante de desiertos y valles- supera los tres mil kilómetros de extensión; un auténtico rosario de playas y bahías, de caletas y pequeños pueblos de pescadores que viven de cara al océano y su fauna abundante, sus olas pretenciosas y mágicos atardeceres.

Toda la costa sorprende por su agreste belleza, pero en la zona norte los encantos playeros se acentúan, el sol se hace eterno, las aguas se tornan cálidas y las aves vuelan en bandadas, como si estuvieran dándole la bienvenida a los veraneantes que buscan buenas olas y a los aventureros deseosos de respirar aires de libertad.

Sí, de norte a sur: Tumbes, Piura, Lambayeque y La Libertad, cuatro regiones, un sinnúmero de playas, algunas con muelles y puertos pintorescos, otras alejadas y serenas y varias convertidas en balnearios atractivos, sucursales del paraíso con excelente servicios e infraestructura hotelera.

Hechizos de arena en las playas norteñas, donde los frutos del mar son la base de una excelente gastronomía, con grandiosos potajes como el ceviche de pescado, mariscos y conchas negras (célebres por sus supuestas propiedades afrodisíacas) y una diversidad de recetas con langostas, cangrejos, langostinos y finos filetes de mero y corvina.

- Centenaria mujer ventanillense celebró onomástico con alcalde Omar Marcos}
Juana Rosa Vargas Carrasco Vda. de Cuibin logró, el último sábado 29 de agosto, pasar la barrera de un siglo de vida que muy pocas personas pueden alcanzar y compartir, junto a su extensa descendencia y el alcalde de Ventanilla, Omar Marcos, las celebraciones por su onomástico número 100.

Natural de Máncora y con más de 47 años de residencia en Ventanilla, doña Juana es toda una dama y respetuosa de las tradiciones de antaño. Testigo de ello son sus 8 hijos (cinco aún viven), sus 25 nietos y sus bisnietos y tataranietos de los que ya ha perdido la cuenta.

Doña Juana es amante de la comida sana, casi sin condimento y con poca grasa, pero tiene la sazón y las buenas manos que caracteriza a la mujer norteña. Dulcera por excelencia y solo brinda con vino, porque asegura que la cerveza no es para una dama.

Esta particular mujer celebró a lo grande un siglo de vida, con una misa de acción de gracias para luego pasar a la recepción donde pasó la noche bailando marinera y sus pasillos favoritos.

Hey all! So my visa is all set. I have religious status, so if i choose to, i could stay in Peru until 2014 before having to renew it again. Pretty cool!

If you look closely at the top, right side, you should be able to make out the word “Religioso”. Pretty funny.

So Lima was nice, and we were planning on heading south afterwards. But when in Lima, we went down to the ocean and started talking to this surf teacher. Nice guy, who told us that he was heading North, where it was warm and sunny, to go chill on the beach. So Marion and I just looked at eachother, and said, “why arent we doing that?” So we got back to the Inspectoria (headquarters of the Salesians in Peru) and started looking for the cheapest way to get up there. We were able to get a friend at the Inspectoria to get us a 40% discount on a bus-ride up to Tumbes and back. Tumbes is the farthest north you can go on the Peruvian coast. Its right on the border of Guayaquil, Ecuador. So we hopped on the bus, drove for 20 hours, and that was that! Tumbes turned out to be warm, but cloudy. We went to Porto Pizarro, which is the fishing port, where you can take a nice little tour to go see a crocodile breeding ground. That was cool. So we stayed a night with our friends aunt, and then headed back down 2 hours to Mancora, which we had driven by and seen how nice and sunny it was. We got to Mancora on Saturday morning, and had until Sunday afternoon. We used the time well, chilling on the beach, in the sun, swimming. I even took a surf class, which was cool. The only problem was, after 1 hour with the teacher, and 1 hour alone out on the water, you are done. Cant move in the water anymore. Its so exhausting! But lots of fun, and i caught a wave and surfed it all the way to the beach. The surfing isnt so hard, i have the balance, its actually catching the wave thats tough. All this buff little surfer dudes are out there surfing for hours, and im close to drowning after 2. so intense, but lots of fun! And the food was AWESOME. Burrito con langostinos! So good! only ate sea-food the entire time. Had to enjoy it up there, all fresh. So after a fun saturday night on the beach, we headed back for the 20 hour bus-ride, to Lima. From Lima we flew the same day back to Cusco, only to find out that the boys had vacation and werent coming home until Wednesday! We could have spent 2 more days on the beach! However, in retrospect, it was nice to come home and have 2 days and 2 nights off just to relax before getting back to work. On Wednesday was also Inti Raymi, the Sun God festival. Mario Vargas Llosa contó esta semana en la ciudad de Piura que se sintió muy emocionado de volver. Dijo que había estado muchas veces de paso, rumbo a Máncora, pero que no veía la urbe misma desde hace varios años. Y la emoción se le notó en los actos públicos que realizó el jueves, durante las nueve horas que estuvo en esa tierra norteña. Primero por la mañana, en una amena charla sostenida con un grupo de 40 escolares de la Institución Educativa Félix Cipriano Coronel Zegarra, de El Alto; y luego en la noche, al clausurar la muestra “Mario Vargas Llosa: Libertad y vida”.
En la reunión matinal, el autor de “Conversación en La Catedral” trató de inculcar a los jóvenes la idea de que el éxito está al alcance de cualquiera que se lo proponga. De allí partió, precisamente, la entrevista que ofreció a El Comercio.
La posibilidad de que cada quien tome el futuro por sus propias manos es algo que usted siempre ha defendido…
Yo creo que es una idea que, sobre todo en nuestra época, es más cierta que en el pasado. Tanto las personas como las sociedades tienen hoy en día oportunidades extraordinarias para poder realizar sus sueños, sus anhelos, sus designios; por supuesto, invirtiendo en ello mucha voluntad, mucho esfuerzo, mucha disciplina. Pero eso ahora es posible, antes no era tan fácil, había tanto personas como sociedades que estaban condenadas a una injusticia de nacimiento, ¿no es verdad?, a vivir dentro de un solo carril; pero hoy en día se puede elegir, se puede cambiar y quizás eso es lo mejor que ha pasado en nuestro tiempo.
¿Usted siente que eso ha sucedido en el Perú?
Mire, yo creo que está empezando a pasar. Todavía de una manera muy limitada, pero —digamos— esa es hoy día una posibilidad que está ahí. Por supuesto en un país como el nuestro todavía hay unas estructuras de tipo social y de tipo cultural que ponen dificultades inmensas a muchos peruanos, gigantescas, para poder realizar sus sueños, pero en eso está el gran desafío que tienen los jóvenes: remover esos obstáculos para que el nuestro sea un país con igualdad de oportunidades para todos.
Después de las elecciones de 1990, y durante toda esa década, usted dijo sentir una frustración, cierta desesperanza sobre el escenario político peruano. ¿Eso ha cambiado?
Digamos que sí, había cierta preocupación, cierta decepción. Habíamos vuelto a caer en una dictadura. Lo peor de todo es que la dictadura tuvo cierta popularidad, y eso siempre es decepcionante.
La tuvo, ¿verdad?
Pero afortunadamente las cosas cambiaron. La dictadura cayó y sobre todo por la enorme presión de una sociedad desencantada con la dictadura y con el dictador. Ahora hemos entrado a un período democrático que ha traído muchos beneficios tanto políticos como económicos al país. No hemos alcanzado la perfección, desde luego, pero por lo menos estamos bien encaminados, y creo que estamos haciendo lo que hay que hacer, ¿no es verdad? Ahora hay que perseverar en esta senda, perfeccionar lo que anda deficiente o errado, porque este verdaderamente es el camino del progreso.
¿Cree usted que en los ambientes político y económico del Perú se acabó la época del mercantilismo y del estatismo? No, creo que todavía hay rezagos de esas ideologías caducas que nos han hecho tanto daño, pero que, a diferencia de lo que ocurría en el pasado, hoy en día hay unos consensos bastante amplios en el país a favor de la democracia política y de la libertad económica o hacia las políticas de mercado, y eso me parece un gran progreso sobre el pasado.
Y es una tendencia mundial, además…
Sí, afortunadamente, y en América Latina es muy claro. Hay países que están claramente orientados en esta dirección, y eso creo que es muy positivo. Eso hay que —digamos— fortalecer, no permitir que venga una marcha hacia atrás.
¿Y por qué no ha surgido un partido liberal que defienda esas ideas?
Bueno, surgió en el pasado, aunque tuvo una vida más bien efímera.
Se refiere al Movimiento Libertad, pero —como dice— ya no está.
Pero yo creo que las ideas liberales han contagiado a un sector amplio de la vida política peruana. El liberalismo está presente dentro del espectro político, dentro de una serie de manifestaciones o de tomas de posición de mucha gente. Incluso muchas veces de una manera inconsciente. Pero claramente creo que las políticas que hoy día se aplican en el Perú con consensos bastante amplios son políticas liberales. Quizás no lo sean de una manera integral, pero están encaminadas en esa dirección o están teñidas de liberalismo, y eso creo que es bueno; porque yo creo que la libertad, pues, es el motor de la civilización, del progreso, de la justicia social.
En lo que no se ha podido avanzar todos estos años es en el destierro de la corrupción, inclusive en este gobierno.
Ese es un problema desgraciadamente muy enraizado. Creo que contribuye a él el tema del narcotráfico. El narcotráfico es una plaga que está causando verdaderos estragos en América Latina y principalmente en países como el nuestro que tienen la desgracia de ser productores de la materia prima de la cocaína. Esa es una fuente de corrupción terrible que hay que combatir con gran energía, con gran severidad, porque la corrupción puede destruir las instituciones y acabar con la democracia.
Aquí en Piura se quiere construir un centro de estudios de su obra. ¿Cómo toma estos homenajes?
Bueno, es una iniciativa que desde luego a mí me emociona, me conmueve muchísimo, y si ese proyecto se materializa, va a contar con mi colaboración. Sobre todo porque creo que el objetivo es impulsar la lectura, que es lo mejor que se puede hacer por un chico o una chica. Esta es una iniciativa que cuenta con todo mi apoyo y, desde luego, con mi gratitud, más aun viniendo de una ciudad a la que tanto quiero.
¿Es tan entrañable el cariño que siente por Piura?
Es muy grande, sí. Y eso que es una ciudad donde solo he vivido dos años, no es mucho, pero ha sido en épocas claves: cuando salía de la niñez y pasaba a la adolescencia y luego cuando salía de la adolescencia. O sea, viví en dos épocas fronterizas de la vida y debieron ser experiencias muy importantes porque fíjese todo lo que he escrito yo sobre Piura. Yo he estado y he vivido más tiempo en muchas ciudades del mundo, pero no he escrito mucho sobre ellas a pesar de que fueron ciudades en las que realicé gran parte de mi trabajo literario y, en cambio, de Piura sí. Y sigue siendo todavía una fuente de fantasías y sueños.
¿Volverá a escribir sobre Piura?
Pues quién sabe, nunca se sabe eso, pero tengo tantos recuerdos de Piura, y tantas imágenes, que podrían perfectamente salir nuevas historias piuranas.

Arrivé a Chiclayo, je suis quasiment directement allé à la plage qui était a 10 km (Pimentel). Plage de sable fin, avec une jetée où les bateaux de pêcheurs viennent vendrent leur marchandise aux acheteurs qui font des allers-retours avec leur bicyclette charriot. Je n’ai pas trouvé la plage particulièrement bien car il y avait beaucoup de courant et peu de fond dans l’océan. Pas de photo car l’appareil n’aime ni le sable ni les voleurs (et il y en avait).

Chiclayo est une ville assez importante, plutot sympathique avec une particularite musicale, la-bas point de salsa, mais des rythmes afro style zouk. Non pas que je sois sorti le soir, mais la musique est assez omnipresente dans les villes.

Les ruines de Tucume

Le lendemain, je suis parti faire le touriste pour de vrai et cocher la case culture que j’avais delaissée depuis un moment. Les ruines de Tucume sont les restes d’une ville d’adobe, enfin de terre quoi, il n’en  reste donc que les grandes lignes, mais c’est néanmoins impressionant de voir ces structures dont une atteint les 700m de long pour 30m de hauteur, et toutes ces petites pyramides, qui ont plus de 1000 ans. C’est la civilisation de Lambayeque pour les experts. Mais les Incas apres les avoir envahis et vaincus y ont aussi séjourné, jusqu’a ce que bien sûr les espagnols mettent tout le monde d’accord. De Trujillo où je ne me suis pas arrêté, on trouve des reste de la civilisation Mochica, et les fameuses tombes des seigneurs de Sipan.

De Chiclayo, j’ai pris un bus de nuit pour Tumbes, et au dernier moment, j’ai eu la bonne idée de descendre a Mancora, une petite station balnéaire à un peu plus d’une heure au sud de Tumbes.

Là je me suis posé 2 bonnes journées pour y faire ce que l’on fait a plage, c’est a dire rien, et manger des ceviches (marinades) de poissons et coques noires.

La prochaine étape fut finalement Tumbes, petite ville sympathique donc l’unique particularité sont les sculptures ideuses et hautes en couleurs qui jalonnent la ville. On y trouve aussi quelques maisons coloniales tres vieilles et décrépites sur lesquelles on apercoit la structure en feuille de palmier (ou autre, je ne sais pas) et torchis. Tumbes serait le site d’une des plus vieilles villes coloniales puisque c’est ici que Pizarro aurait debarqué, selon la petite vieille locale de 72 ans fière de ses origines italiennes qui m’a abordé dans la rue.

Sur les canaux

J’ai visité le Sanctuario Nacional de Manglares de Tumbes. C’est une espece de marais avec des canaux artificiaux et naturels ou l’activite est encore la collecte des coques noires (conchas negras) et des crabes (eux sont rouges). Et donc comme son nom l’indique (enfin je viens de comprendre en cherchant la traduction en ligne) c’est truffé de mangroves, des arbres aquatiques en quelques sortes. C’est aussi très bon pour l’observation des oiseaux. J’ai du en voir 5! mais ils etaient peu communs, qu’importe comme dit mon collegue, c’est une activité qu’il vaut mieux réserver pour la retraite.

Cambio de planes. En la última semana, cientos de viajeros han visto interrumpidas sus travesías, no solo a causa de la gripe AH1N1 (llamada gripe porcina) sino también por el mal tiempo local. A continuación intentamos responder algunas de las dudas más frecuentes que se han generado en los pasajeros en torno a ambos problemas.

LA LLAMADA GRIPE PORCINA
¿Qué medidas han tomado las aerolíneas?
Diversas líneas aéreas ya manifestaron que no volarían del Perú hacia México o viceversa, de acuerdo con lo dictaminado por el Ministerio de Transportes y Comunicaciones (MTC). Tal es el caso de LAN Perú, que ha suspendido sus vuelos hasta el 30 de mayo informando a los pasajero perjudicados que sus vuelos serán reprogramados sin ningún costo adicional. De igual manera, TAM Airlines ha planteado que aquellas personas con boletos emitidos con destino a América del Norte quedan exonerados del pago de tasas, debido a cambios en sus itinerarios a partir del 28 de abril y hasta nuevo aviso. En el caso particular de la empresa Aeroméxico, el pasajero puede cambiar la fecha de su boleto hasta el 9 de noviembre, según nos lo comentó Sofía Shimabuku, supervisora de corporativo vacacional de la agencia de viajes Nuevo Mundo.

Por su parte, la Dirección de Comunicaciones de la aerolínea TACA ha dejado en claro mediante una nota de prensa que serán suspendidos aquellos vuelos Lima — México incluso con conexiones. Asimismo, que se han ampliado los plazos que liberan de penalidades a aquellas personas con boletos comprados desde el 24 de abril al 6 de mayo.

¿Viajar en avión es seguro para mi salud?
La Asociación de Transporte Aéreo Internacional (IATA) ha manifestado —a través de las palabras de Giovanni Bisignani, director general de dicha institución— que las líneas aéreas están en la capacidad de seguir funcionando frente a una posible pandemia o los efectos generados por el virus AH1N1 puesto que, “los aviones modernos cuentan con sistemas de filtración de aire similares a los de los hospitales y son desinfectados como parte de los procedimientos normales de limpieza”. Agrega también que la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) no ha recomendado ninguna restricción de viajes.

¿Las tarjetas de asistencia médica cubren o no la llamada gripe porcina?
Assist Card y Travel Ace Assistance, dos reconocidas empresas del rubro, han adaptado su cobertura en pos de la seguridad de los viajeros que se sientan expuestos al contagio o padezcan los síntomas de la nueva influenza. Esto incluye tanto las consultas, traslados y hospitalización.

Assist Card ha asegurado que “la empresa estará entregando tarjetas de asistencia adicionales gratuitas (para acompañantes) a todos los pasajeros que compren sus productos de asistencia durante el mes de mayo en el Perú”. Asimismo, han dispuesto centrales de alarma regionales a las cuales los pasajeros pueden llamar.

Para los que tengan dudas respecto al país donde están yendo, Ximena Bastías, gerenta general de Travel Ace Assistance, indica que “las coberturas médicas no excluyen a ningún país de ofrecer la asistencia, ya sea como destino final o como conexión”. Incluso agrega que están extendiendo la cobertura a aquellas personas que se encuentren afectados por la gripe AH1N1 y no puedan volver a casa. Además, señala que si el pasajero desiste del viaje no se le cobraría ningún monto adicional.

¿Qué pasa si ya había comprado un paquete turístico hacia alguno de los destinos afectados por la llamada gripe porcina?
Shimabuku explica que la devolución de dinero muchas veces depende de la tarifa en que haya sido comprado el boleto, así como de las regulaciones de cada empresa aérea. Sucede lo mismo en relación con los servicios de hospedaje, pues se podría cobrar un gasto administrativo en el supuesto de una cancelación de los servicios.

En relación con los paquetes de viaje, Shimabuku añade que no se devuelve el dinero. “Podemos cambiar fechas de vuelos y estadía, o usar el monto para un posterior viaje a otro destino si el pasajero ya no desea ir a México”.

¿Y si me quiero ir de viaje por Fiestas Patrias?
No está demás buscar un nuevo destino si no desea cancelar la travesía. La representante de la operadora turística en mención recomienda lugares como República Dominicana, Cuba, Colombia, Brasil y Argentina. Y en nuestro país, Máncora, Cusco, Arequipa o Puno. No obstante, si para esa época se baja el nivel de alerta, venderían paquetes con destino a México.

EL MAL CLIMA
¿Qué responsabilidades asume la aerolínea?
Los vuelos se están reprogramando, aunque en caso de clima las empresas no tienen la obligación de asumir ningún tipo de remuneración hacia el pasajero.

¿Y si tengo conexión?
Inés Elejalde, gerenta general de la aerolínea TACA, explica que se intenta proteger la travesía del pasajero manteniéndose en contacto con otras líneas aéreas. En ese sentido, Sofía Shimabukuru, representante de Nuevo Mundo, advierte que si el boleto de conexión no permite cambio, este se perdería.

¿Y si cancelan el vuelo cuando estoy ya en el avión?
Si iba a salir del país y su vuelo se reprograma para el día siguiente, no se sorprenda si la tripulación le solicita que le entregue su pasaporte. Lo que ocurre es que al haber pasado ya por Migraciones es necesario que esa entidad anule el sello de salida del Perú, pues de lo contrario puede tener problemas futuros.

Le "train" touristique bloqué par un glissement de terrain.. bienvenue en Equateur!

Je continue cette descente vers le sud en mode turbo… Me voici arrivé depuis hier soir à Huaraz dans la Cordillère Blanche, qui se vante d’être la deuxième plus grande chaîne de montagnes après l’Himalaya, en plein milieux du Perou. On y trouve tout de même même vingt-deux sommets de plus de six mille mètres, qui justifient le nom donné à cette éclosion de monts enneigés. Je pars demain pour un trekking de trois jours entre quatre mille et quatre mille sept cents mètres, après avoir passé presqu’une semaine au niveau de la mer. J’espère que le dieu du mal d’altitude me le pardonnera…

Les splendides payasages Equatoriens, depuis le train

Après le trajet en train et deux nuits passées dans la belle ville coloniale de Cuenca, en Equateur, j’avais décidé d’écourter ma visite de ce beau pays pour me rendre directement vers les côtes Péruviennes en compagnie de Fred et Cathy, un couple de comparses Belges rencontrés sur la crête du Volcan Quilotoa (http://fantasticadventure.skyrock.com/) et de Fernanda, une Colombienne qui voyageait seule. Il faut dire que ma garganta del diablo ne me laissait toujours pas tranquille et j’avais compris qu’il était temps de me prendre une pause-playa. Mais cette visite éclair de l’Equateur n’aura pas été, de loin, suffisante pour pouvoir apprécier à sa juste valeur les nombreux charmes de ce superbe pays. Après un passage rapide et assez désagréable par Tumbes, la première ville Péruvienne après la frontière, où un concentré de sales gueules nous ont fixé toute l’après midi et ont fini par nous suivre jusque dans notre hôtel, nous nous sommes finalement retrouvé à Mancora, petite ville balnéaire envahie par les surfeurs. C’est la dernière plage où l’on peut profiter d’une eau relativement chaude avant de rencontrer le courant Humboldt un peu plus au sud (genre Gulf  stream inversé). On y a retrouvé Jean-Yves, un français avec qui j’avais bien accroché à Medellin (http://jy-chaulet.blogspot.com), qui y prenait son pied en surfant depuis trois jours après avoir passé également plus d’un mois en montagne.

Fred et Cathy ont cependant continué vers Lima, où on les attendait pour se faire soigner aux petits oignons par des amis de la famille. Ils m’ont fait découvrir le principe “Couchsurfing”, que je compte utiliser dès que j’aurais ralenti quelque peu la cadence  : on prend contact via un site dédié (http://www.couchsurfing.com) avec un hôte potentiel. Ce dernier, en fonction de ses disponibilités et de votre profil laissé sur le site, accepte ou non de vous héberger. Le tout est gratuit, l’idée étant de promouvoir les échanges interculturels. Fred et Cathy ont ainsi pu traverser tous les Etats-Unis sans payer un rond en logement et en remplissant leurs besaces d’expériences inédites et d’anecdotes croustillantes… J’ai hâte d’essayer, c’est exactement comme ça que j’envisage le voyage, en rentrant en contact avec des locaux ouverts d’esprit! D’ailleurs, si vous êtes  intéressés par héberger des voyageurs de passage, c’est très facile, je vous invite à vous renseigner directement sur le site.

Un mur reconstruit de la ville de Chan chan

Après trois nuits passées à Mancora en compagnie de Jan-Yves, à profiter de la plage et des succulents menus “ceviche-poisson” à 1,5€, nous sommes partis à deux avec Fernanda en direction des montagnes, en réalisant une visite éclair du site archéologique de Chan chan aux abords de la ville de Trujillo.  Chan Chan est la plus grande ville pré-hispanique qui ait jamais existé sur le continent américain. Elle a été entièrement construite en brique d’adobe et il n’en subsiste aujourd’hui essentiellement qu’un nombre impressionnant de rangées de sables plus ou moins rectilignes qui témoignent de sa grandeur passée. La citée fût construite entre le Xème et le XVème siècle par le peuple Chimu et on estime qu’elle a pu abriter jusqu’à 100.000 habitants avant d’être annexée par les Incas en 1470 lors de la grande vague de conquête. Certains sites ont cependant été réhabilités et nous donnent une idée de l’étonnant degré d’organisation et de développement technologique atteint par ces civilisations pré-colombiennes.

Si tout se passe bien, ce trekking de trois jours devrait être un bon entraînement avant d’entamer une ascension à six mille mètres. Je pense finalement la réaliser au Perou, près d’Arequipa, sur ce qui semble être un des six mille les plus faciles, ou les moins difficiles au monde, c’est selon!

Abril,09,2009.- Lima. La Tercera Vicepresidenta del Congreso, Dra. Fabiola Morales Castillo, envió un pedido de información dirigido al Ministro de Salud con la finalidad que responda por la grave situación de abandono en la que se encuentra el Centro de Salud Materno Infantil de Los Órganos (Talara, Piura), el mismo que ha visto desbordada su capacidad al atender a miles de pobladores de las caletas de El Ñuro, El Alto, Cabo Blanco, Máncora, Canoas y Punta Sal.

A través del Pedido Nº 169 -2008-2009/FMC/DSP, la legisladora señala que el citado centro no cuenta con atención permanente las 24 horas, ni ha sido repotenciado, ni tiene el equipamiento necesario para la afluencia de moradores que acuden a este establecimiento. “Gracias a una empresa privada, sólo hay dos médicos internos, sin que el Estado haya destacado especialistas en cirugía, pediatría y obstetricia”, precisó.

Morales Castillo informó además que tampoco hay medicinas básicas, a pesar que la mayoría de pacientes provienen de zonas de bajos recursos como los pueblos jóvenes de Pueblo Nuevo, San Martín y Las Mercedes; los mismos que están expuestos a enfermedades como el dengue, conjuntivitis, infecciones respiratorias y estomacales.

Cabe destacar que la Congresista ha pedido al titular de Salud, Dr. Oscar Ugarte Ubilluz, y al propio Presidente Regional de Piura, César Trelles, conocer si existen planes para que este establecimiento se convierta en hospital de apoyo; y si, en el marco de la nueva ley de aseguramiento, existe algún plan para mejorar el servicio y la capacidad de este establecimiento.

Abril,09,2009.- Talara.- El propietario de un conocido hotel ubicado en el distrito de Máncora, fue detenido por la policía luego de haber realizado tocamientos indebidos a una turista australiana que se había hospedado en su establecimiento junto a su novio.

Se trata de Carlos Ernesto Ángeles Cadenillas de 31 años, propietario del hotel “Los Ángeles del Mar”, quien hospedó a la australiana identificada como Taj Martin Simpson de 26 años y su novio de la misma nacionalidad.

Los huéspedes se alojaron en uno de los cuartos, sin embrago, al promediar las 12:50 de la madrugada de ayer, Ángeles, que tenía los duplicados de las habitaciones, ingresó sigilosamente al dormitorio de los extranjeros y comenzó a tocar las partes íntimas de la joven.

Ésta, creyendo que se trataba de su novio que dormía a su costado, no sospechó nada en un primer momento, sin embargo, al darse con la sorpresa de que se trataba del propietario de hotel, empezó a gritar alertando a su novio.

Descubierto, Ángeles salió rápidamente de la habitación, escondiéndose en la parte posterior del hotel. Los turistas dieron aviso a la policía que logró su captura siendo recluido en la comisaría de Máncora donde viene siendo investigado por el Ministerio Público.

Apres tant de montagnes, de ruines, de decouvertes culturelles, il est temps d’aller faire un peu la fiesta sur les rythmes latinos a la playa. J’ai donc pris le bus pour la station balneaire de Mancora, la plage la plus courrue du Perou et la plus belle. (enfin il parait…)

Apres 16 heures de bus (ca devient standard comme temps de trajet finalement on s’y fait), je suis donc debarque a Mancora, petit village (et non la station balneaire meditarraneene comme on peut se l’imaginer) au bord du Pacifique, temps tres chaud, coups de soleils au programme.

La journee standard commence par un leve tardif avec un petit dejeuner dans le “bar” de l’hostel avec vue sur la mer et brise agreable du matin. Puis petite ballade au bord de l’eau a regarder les superbes pelicans voler en rase motte au dessus des vagues. Apprecier le repas de midi realise par le chef de l’hostel qui est “cuit” et “stone” 24h/24… mais il cuisine bien. Puis se diriger par la plage direction le centre regarder les surfeurs et siroter une boisson rafraichissante, tout en socialisant avec d’autres personnes. Puis retour par la route principale pour yeuter le marche d’artisanat. Puis rentrer a l’hostal en tuc-tuc et se reposer pour sortir vers 23h.

Mancora c’est aussi les fruits de mers dont le fameux “Ceviche” poisson cru, cuit dans le jus de citron.

Mancora is one of these places where it is too easy to become sucked into the lifestyle so much that leaving becomes a near impossibility. Many of the people I talked to last night have been here for double or triple the amount of time they had initially planned. There is not even anything too special about the place, it just is too easy to just live here.

In case you remember the blog I wrote about the difference between traveling and a holiday, someone yesterday said, he has been traveling for months now, but it is the first time he feels he is on a holiday, hence he just stays on. Remember? On a holiday you leave your sorrow home. Many have checked in for a while, enjoying the fact that they slip looking for accommodation for some days, no booking bus tickets, no talking to new strangers each day… The strangers here quickly feel like friends, a hotel room like one’s apartment, Mancora like an adopted home.

Some have checked in decisively too long, they are the ghosts of Mancora. Like in a bad movie about the lost hippies of the late 60s, some here have not ever checked out again. Or they have checked out, but have forgotten to leave. Some Austrian guy talked to me yesterday asking for five Soles. I handed them too him reluctantly. Judging from his scent and the ripped Jeans he needed them badly. The stubbles of his beard had turned into a shimmering gray while the sun had deeply tanned his skin into a leathery substance. He said that he needed to make a call. His stuff was lost, even his teeth had been stolen he claimed, explaining his teeth-less appearance- or maybe not?

He should have left, I thought, but maybe Mancora is another of these black holes, like Gili Air in Indonesia, into which I once fell for a while. It can be nice to disappear in this way for a while, but our Austrian friend- like the other hippie ghosts walking the alleys of Mancora after dawn- forgot to reappear. What kind of a live is it? How do you get there? Maybe I should have asked, but I let him play his act; did not want to rip the last bit of pride off him.

They have it hard enough as it is I guess. The Loki-hostel’s entrance reads: No entrance for hippies.

Fingers crossed I make it out of here, the bus ticket I have in hand already. But maybe checking out is easy, though, will I ever leave?

Finally I have made it back to a beach again. Accommodation literally on the beach: 7 Euros, breakfast not included, boohoo. I know that it will bore the hell out of me in no time, but it is nice to be in Peru´s major beach town, Mancora, put the feet in the hot sand, slurp a cold drink (actually not even true, the drink is hot coffee and the sand is nicely cold under the table) and watch the surfers and swimmers and the plenty of brown skin.
