After four days in Yangon, I got myself an overnight-bus ticket to Mandalay. The trip takes anywhere from 12 to 15 hours and I wasn’t looking forward to it however, you don’t really have a choice. Yes, you can take one of the domestic flights. Dodgy track record thrown in for free. Or you can take the train, which actually takes longer than the bus, but you’ll be able to book a sleeper (foreigners aren’t allowed to book regular train tickets). However, the problem with the train is that it’s 100% government run, and I believe the planes are either government or joint ventures. I know that by visiting Myanmar I am already putting money in the pocket of  the ruling military junta by paying money for the visa, the airport exit fee and 12% on bus tickets and guesthouse expenses however, you can still make your choices wisely to ensure as little as possible disappears into the pockets of those bastards. Having said that, the money made off of tourism doesn’t amount to that much. I read somewhere that Myanmar receives less than 200,000 tourists a year.

So the bus it was. I was actually surprised the bus wasn’t totally falling apart. It was an old Japanese tour bus with decent, yet very small seats. There was aircon as well as a TV blaring cheesy Burmese pop videos at maximum volume for hours at end. I can’t really sleep on those buses but I had my iPod which also blocked out the puking sounds from the lady next to me, who threw up during the whole duration of the 12 hour ride. Little bags of puke everywhere. Oh, it was an adventure.

After a few hours we stopped for a bathroom and food break in the middle of nowhere. Just looking at the food made me want to join my barfing seat mate, but I had to go to the bathroom. I opened the door and the bathroom,  basically a hole in the ground with a bucket and a scoop (I can deal with that after all those months) was filled with what I believe to be black widow spiders. There were hundreds of them. I never peed so fast in my life and basically got out still pulling up my pants.

The ride was surreal as there is no such thing as street lighting, the only time you see something lit up it’s most likely a prison. Everything else is dark. Some parts of the road were actually quite good, other parts were extremely bumpy.

We made one more of those stops and we had to get out of the bus for 2 ID checks. I was the only foreigner on the bus and I’m sure I held everybody up because they needed to meticulously browse through my passport and record a bunch of details with pen and paper. Luckily, no ‘tea money’ was required to get the go ahead and finally after 12 hours on that bus, we arrived at a dusty parking lot just outside of Mandalay at 5 AM. It was very dark, because there was no electricity. It was kind of eerie, too. Lots of buses were coming and going and I had no idea where to go as I did not have a hotel booked. I looked at my Lonely Planet guide and a taxi driver approached me. I told him I wanted to be dropped off at a certain guesthouse. He took me to his taxi, which was one of those tiny little blue Mazda pick up trucks you’d expect to see in Cuba. I climbed into the back and off we went. The funny thing is, that guy knew how to speak a little Dutch. It was just bizarre. When we got to the guesthouse it turned out to be full, so he suggested another one, just a block away. Sure, what was I gonna do at 5.30 AM…. He took me to E.T. guesthouse and it looked pretty decent so I got a room there. I took a quick nap and went for a walk around ‘downtown’.

My first impression of Mandalay was that it wasn’t very pretty. Whereas in Yangon, there’s a lot of old quite interesting (yet crumbling) architecture… no such thing in Mandalay. I honestly felt a bit lost there add exhaustion and 37C to the mix and there’s a recipe for misery. I then decided that I was not going to do Bagan, which meant another 8 hours on a bus to get there, and another 16 hours to get back to Yangon.

I got some half decent Chinese food, walked around town a bit to see if there was anything going on. There wasn’t. At night there was absolutely nothing to do so I decided to make it an early night and I ended up going to bed at 8 PM.

The next day I woke up early and I went for a walk around the Mandalay palace. There were some pretty sights but nothing that really blew me away apart from the huge propaganda posters with statements like “The Tatmadaw (the military) will never betray the cause of our nation.” Pretty eerie.

Went back to the hotel for brekkie and decided I might as well check out some of the temples as there wasn’t much else to do. So when I was walking down the street, a tri-shaw driver approached me. His English was very good and he talked about a few places where he could take me. I decided to give it a go and hopped into the tri-shaw.

His name was Mr. Htoo and he turned out to be an excellent guide and also companion. He pedaled me around town for the entire afternoon and showed me a bunch of temples, which were okay but not breath taking. However, the most interesting part of our afternoon was making stops at the tea shops where you sit on tiny stools and just sip tea and eat snacks (those are very good btw. I ended up living on those things for the last few days because they were very tasty, yet not very healthy as they’re all deep fried.). I much enjoyed talking to him. He then told me that he was mentioned in the Lonely Planet guide and yes, indeed he was there. The guide stated that he rents out bicycles but unfortunately he no longer does. He told me that after the 2007 anti-government protests that were lead by the monks (the government actually started shooting at the protesters and about 30 people ended up dead and more than 1000 people were arrested) tourism came to a halt and he was forced to sell his bicycles so his 4 children could go to school. He’s hoping to open his bicycle rental business again in the new future but a bicycle costs anywhere from 40 to 70 USD and on an income of about 30 USD a month, it takes a long time to save up.

Htoo picked me up later that night to take me to ‘The Moustache Brothers’, one of the few evening entertainment options out there. The Moustache Brothers are Par Par Lay, Lu Maw and Lu Zaw and their show is a mix of stand up comedy, Burmese dance and pretty harsh criticism of the Burmese government. The theatre is actually in their garage and it’s pretty neat to be there. Locals are not allowed to attend, but it’s safe for foreigners. I honestly couldn’t believe some of the things that were said about the generals and their ‘government’. As it happens, Lay and Zaw both served 6 years in prison doing hard labour for criticizing the government and yet they continue. Pretty courageous.

The next morning Htoo picked me up again to go to Mandalay Hill and see yet a few more temples. The cutest thing was when I got out of the temples, I saw him polishing up his bicycle. He had just put on new tires and was very proud of his possession. Once again, we ended up in a tea shop and drank Star cola (Burmese version of Pepsi), tea and ate snacks. We also invited a little girl who was selling newspapers. She didn’t speak English, but she told Htoo that she has to work to add to the income of her family so she can’t go to school. Pretty heart breaking. It was also very cute to see her drink the Star cola. She wasn’t used to drinking carbonated drinks so she sipped very very slowly however, she wolfed down the snacks in no time.

That night, it was time to go back on the bus. It wasn’t great, but it wasn’t as bad as the ride to Mandalay even though it was an hour longer. I arrived at the Okinawa Guesthouse once again and all was well.

I kind of regret not biting the bullet and make the trek to Bagan. Even though Myanmar was a bit boring in some regards, I did find it the most interesting country out of the bunch. The people are very friendly and curious. Other than the moneychangers, there are no blatant rip offs like you can expect in Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam. Talking to the locals is quite easy, even their English is sometimes limited. I’ve had conversations with quite a few people there and it surprised me they were quite willing to talk about the political situation in their country even though it was mostly done in a roundabout way. After all, openly opposing the government could land them in prison for many years.

And even though I hate the thought of the military junta getting any of my money, I am glad I did go. There are lots of ways of minimizing the money that goes to the government. Don’t take domestic flights, don’t stay in government owned hotels and don’t take the train, which is government run as well. All the people I’ve talked to were glad to see foreigners visiting. After the anti-government protests tourism virtually came to a halt and it was devastating for a lot of people, like Htoo. Also, from what I gathered the Burmese feel that as long as there’s at least some tourists, they are not completely isolated and a few hundred Kyat tips here and there go a long way. However, despite the friendly people and their optimism and openness, I couldn’t help but feel sad for them. Whereas in Cambodia, I feel that despite the rampant poverty, they’re on their way to something, whereas in Myanmar…. I couldn’t help but feel hopeless most of the time. Maybe next year’s elections will bring a change of scenery. Maybe not…

There aren’t any public phones in Myanmar. When you need to make a phone call, you go to one of these: just a table with a regular phone.

I am often asked about which countries I enjoy photographing the most.  That’s very hard to answer, but I do enjoy going back again and again to Buddhist countries, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, Bhutan, Tibet, Sri Lanka, and Burma.

The ethics and the aesthetics of Buddhism are melded in a unique way. The vivid color of robes and sacred places contrast with the monochromatic tradition I grew up with.

Every time I have visited a Buddhist monastery, I have seen a playfulness among the monks, a joy in the way they conduct themselves and the way they interact with each other.

As I photographed the picture of the monk and the cat in a monastery in Thailand, it occured to me that all the qualities that I observed – contemplation, serenity, meditation – are ones that are antithetical to the hard-charging, ladder-climbing Western culture.

The Monks have a way of taking something we could consider mundane, and transform it into something sacred.

Monasteries have always been places of refuge for people and animals who have no other place to go.  Monks will share whatever they have, no matter how small.

Even though they get merits for helping people in need, one never has the impression that they do it for any other reason other than their good nature, dedication, and hospitality. 

Quotations from the Buddha:

“Just as a candle cannot burn without fire, men cannot live without a spiritual life.”

“In the sky, there is no distinction of east and west; people create distinctions out of their own minds and then believe them to be true.”

So this would be my last day in Myanmar. There are several ancient cities around Mandalay, each of which has been the site of the royal palace at some point. The old kings used to move the palace regularly and I guess the ancient cities are places where it used to be. The three of us and an Israeli girl called Or(sp?) went to visit Amurapura, which was the site of the palace before it moved to where it is now in Mandalay. Nothing remains of the palace there now, the whole thing is demolished and the pieces used in the construction of the new palace (which will undoubtedly have to be larger and grander than the previous one).

Anyway, all this talk of palaces is completely misleading as our trip to Amurapura had nothing to do with them. Its claim to fame is the teak bridge across the lake. At 1.2km long, it is the longest teak bridge in the world and is quite breathtaking, both in the simplicity of its construction and the beauty of the lake around it. We rejected the numerous (!) offers of boat rides, preferring to walk across and back ourselves. We stopped for a drink on the far side at a bar by the lakeside and I drank a coconut (good idea Cat ).

On the way to the bridge we stopped at a Buddhist monastery, where you can see the monks parade in to breakfast and then watch them eat… which seems a bit weird – I’m not sure I see the attraction and it just seemed a little rude. I wonder if they eat differently to us normal people.

On the way back we stopped at a gold-leaf Buddha monastery. There’s a large Buddha there which is covered entirely in gold – it’s very shiny. Unfortunately we couldn’t really get very close to it as they seemed to be doing some kind of filming at the time. I’m pretty sure I managed to get myself in shot and probably now hold rock star status in Myanmar, if only they could find me.

Back to the hotel, and it was time for me to go. As usual the taxi had been and gone, but was coming back for me. Some tearful goodbyes later and I found myself once again on the road to Mandalay… airport.

Mandalay airport is a strange place. I failed to get rid of the porter who insisted on carrying my bag from the taxi to the check-in, but with hindsight I’m glad I did. The airport is huge and the signs very misleading. Rather than checking in where the “Check-in” sign is, you have to go through “Passengers only”, which apparently doesn’t exclude the porter. The place is also massive and almost completely empty. It’s weird, it’s like they built the whole place for some big ego boost, then realised they couldn’t use it. In fact I wouldn’t be at all surprised if that’s what happened. The Gate numbers go up to 16, yet every flight (when I was there at 3ish, there were four listed on the screen) goes from gate 11.

Anyway, on reaching passport control the porter demanded money, so I gave him a dollar.

The flight was blissfully uneventful. I chatted to a Thai lady next to me who turned out to be going to the same guesthouse in Yangon with her friend, so we shared a taxi – didn’t see any military taxi types around this time, although all the drivers wanted too much money. We eventually persuaded one to take us for 5000 kyat. I managed to reject the porter this time, although was forced to do it a little forcefully.

So I found myself back in the Motherland 2 for one more night. I didn’t realise they had dorms, so I got myself a cheap single room with shared toilet and bathroom. What a mistake that would turn out to be….

In den letzten Monaten haben sich meine Pläne für die nächste Reise ziemlich verändert. Aus den geplanten 3 Monaten wird leider nichts. Hintergrund: Ich htte einen günstigen Flug nach Bangkok gebucht, von Anfang Dezember bis Ende Februar (im März muss ich aus verschiedenen Gründen wieder zuhause sein). Daraus wurde leider nichts, da der Carrier (Gulf Air) Flugplan und Preise dermaßen verändert hat, dass mich der ganze Spaß fast doppelt so gekommen wäre. Zusätzlich hätte noch eine Übernachtung in Bahrain angestanden.

Zusammen mit meinem Reisebüro („Reiseland“ im Globetrotter-Haus Köln, sehr zu empfehlen) fanden wir dann eine Alternastive, allerdings nur 2 Monate lang: Vom 3.1. bis 28.10.2001 mit Emirates und Zwischenlandung in Dubai. Aufgrund der nun kürzeren Reisezeit verändert sich jetzt auch die Planung. Aktuell:

We arrived at Mandalay bus station at 6:00 in the morning and as soon as we did, every single taxi driver in Mandalay leapt on the side of the bus and shouted and screamed through the window. Groggy and tired from our bus ride we decided to remain confused and bewildered. We found a taxi/pickup driver who was from the hostel we were looking at and failed to negotiate with him this time. So off we went to the ET hotel at full price. We arrived there, looked at the room (pretty manky) and the rooftop terrace (concrete – no chairs) we decided to not stay there and went to the Royal Guesthouse instead. This met with our standards and off we went to sleep.

As usual we slept longer than we meant to. We met a German girl in the hostel and went for ice cream. Being the adventurous type that I am, when she recommended Faluda dessert I decided to go for it. It was milk with milk icecream and bits of unmade jelly in it with a coconut topping and was absolutely foul. Next time I’m going to find out what things are before I buy them.

The three of us went for a short walk around the city and saw the wall of the old royal palace. This is a 2km square palace. It is immense, but you have a buy a $10 ticket to get in and the money goes to the government. So we gave it a miss.

Back from our walk, we wanted to go up Mandalay hill to see the sunset. We picked up a couple of trishaw (bicycle with a side-car that seats two) drivers outside and they cycled us to the bottom of the hill. That left us there at 5:10, with the sun due to set shortly after 5:30 and it was supposed to take 45 minutes to get up the hill. You can get a taxi driver to drop you off halfway, but we walked up the steps. There are numerous shrines and Buddhas on the way. Apparently the hill is about 40 storeys high, and we did it in 20 minutes, which shocked a lot of people.

After the hill, we planned to go and see the Moustache brothers. This is a famous group of dissidents in Mandalay, who put on a show that involves a bit of comedy and traditional drumming and dance – it’s a very good show. The group are banned from performing in Myanmar, so the shows have to take place in their front room. They appear to get arrested occasionally too, but generally they seem to get away with it. Cat and I wore our longyis again (that was the deal we made when we bought them) and bought some Moustache brothers T-shirts. One to save until I’m out of the country methinks!

This past Friday,one of my favorite rappers,DMX, got caught up in a riot at a concert venue he was to perform in.

As in the tradition of Sly Stone, Michael Jackson, Prince, and The Rolling Stones, DMX arrived a little late for his performance.

I call it fashionably late, and I know that anticipation is a big part of  the realisation of the euphoria that transfix an audience while enjoying a live hip hop show.

Colorado Springs, Colorado apparently has not gotten that message yet, because at Friday’s show, they totally flipped.

An amateur video of the melee has been posted on YouTube, and it speaks for itself.

The fake cops are thoroughly escalating the situation unnecessarily, they are disrespecting DMX, and naturally an argument ensues between all parties.

The crowd decides to ride for DMX, and the rent a cops act like they are going to fight the crowd!

Surprisingly, the usually emotional rapper demonstrates a calm head, and appropriately encourages the crowd to calm down, and to not do anything to make the police arrest them, because that is exactly what they want to do.

That was some sage advice, and I commend DMX for showing this level of concern for the safety of his loyal fans, even in   the midst of a crazy, out of control situation.

Rudyard Kipling, cuyo poema ‘Mandalay’ fue cantado por Sinatra en 1958, dijo que Birmania es ‘una tierra del todo distinta a cualquier otra conocida’.

Mandalay es la segunda mayor ciudad de Birmania con una población de casi un millón de habitantes. Fue la última capital del reino birmano antes de la colonización británica.

Mandalay una ciudad polvorienta, repleta de bicicletas y puestos de comida callejeros.

Se construyó en 1857, en torno a la colina que domina la ciudad, cuya cumbre ofrece una espléndida panorámica de 360 grados: el espectacular río Irrawaddy al oeste, la ciudad al sur, los arrozales al norte y las colinas del país shan -etnia dominante en la montañosa parte oriental de Birmania, fronteriza con China y Tailandia- al este.

Se puede subir en taxi, pero es mejor a pie, aunque hay que hacerlo descalzo. Se pueden visitar santuarios de Buda o nats -espíritus animistas incorporados al budismo-, charlar con algún monje u observar la práctica del chinlon, una mezcla de fútbol y voleibol con pelota de mimbre.

Tras esta visita, obligada y recomendable en la puesta de sol, Mandalay genera en el visitante una cierta desorientación. ¿Por dónde empezar?

La ciudad es el corazón comercial, religioso y cultural del centro y norte de Birmania.

El descomunal palacio real ocupa lo que debería ser el centro- y un incesante traqueteo de vehículos destartalados, no invita a callejear.

Se puede regatear con un conductor de trishaw -especie de bicicleta con sidecar- para visitar las pagodas al sur de la colina: Sandamani Paya, Kyauktawgyi Paya, con un buda de ocho metros tallado de una pieza en mármol, o Kuthodaw Paya, conocida como ‘el libro más grande del mundo’ al albergar en 729 losas de mármol las escrituras sagradas del budismo.

Al suroeste, la Mahamuni Paya es uno de los santuarios más visitados de Birmania. Y cuando uno se canse de pagodas -sucede antes o después- conviene tomarse la tarde para pedir un té con dulces, acudir al mercado de Zaigyo o probar la excelente Myanmar Beer.

Para visitar las afueras también habrá que regatear: Se puede optar por un blue taxi -minúsculas camionetas Mazda de los años 50- o un white taxi, robustos y algo más cómodos -todo es relativo- Toyota.

Los mayores atractivos de Mandalay están en las antiguas capitales birmanas situadas a a pocos kilómetros: Amarapura, Sagaing, Inwa y Mingún.

Es obligada la visita al precioso puente de U Bein en Amarapura, el puente de teca más largo del mundo (1,2 kilómetros), que ofrece su puesta de sol entre escolares que regresan a casa, monjes budistas con túnica azafrán y pescadores.

No muy lejos están Inwa y Sagaing. Para acceder a Inwa, después de dejar el taxi hay que tomar una barcaza, y luego contratar una calesa para moverse por la isla.

La mayor parte de sus construcciones están invadidas por la vegetación, y los campesinos cultivan arroz en tierras que durante 400 años eran parte del palacio real.

El monasterio Bagaya Kyaung está hecho enteramente de teca, sujeto sobre centenares de enormes pilares, y en su interior conviven ardillas y monjes dando clase a los niños.

Al otro lado del río está la colina de Sagaing, lugar sagrado donde viven unos 6.000 monjes budistas. Es un relajante laberinto de escaleras salpicadas de cementerios, stupas y templos, con vistas al Irrawaddy.

Volviendo a Mandalay, desde el atareado puerto fluvial salen cada día barcos a Mingún, cuyas gigantescas construcciones quedan empañadas por la insistencia de los vendedores de souvenirs.

Se puede encontrar, además de una campana de 90 toneladas, los restos de lo que iba a ser la mayor pagoda del mundo, con 150 metros de alto y semiderruida por un terremoto.

La escapada, de medio día, merece la pena por el trayecto en barco por el Irrawaddy. De igual modo, la mejor forma de salir de Mandalay es río abajo hasta Nyaung U.

Es la puerta de la explanada de los templos de Bagán, que impresionó a Marco Polo y aún eriza el vello del viajero más curtido.

Hay distintas opciones, desde los cruceros rápidos para turistas hasta los barcos locales. Éstos suponen 15 horas de viaje con paradas en las que se comercia toda mercancía imaginable mientras el barco es abordado por despiadados vendedores de samusas, sandías y chucherías.

A la cuarta hora uno se arrepiente de su decisión, pero ya el tiempo dirá qué vivencias se olvidan y cuáles perduran.

i’m planning a short trip to Myanmar in the next few months.

What suprised me is the cost of travelling in the country. Internal flights are shockingly expensive for a developing south-east asian country. i’ll give more details on the costs and airlines available later.

The modes of transport that i’m considering on my trip are by plane (to save time and to get the experience of course), bus and TRAIN! i heard the train trip in myanmar is an eye-opening experience. i can’t wait to try it.

things to note before travel in myanmar: (updating in process :p)

1. visa
(check if you can get it prior to travel in your home country as it’s  more expensive to get it at the airport itself)

2. change your money to crisp and preferably new USD.
(you have to change the usd to either the kyat (chat) or the some denomiation that is pegged to the USD and money changers are rather finicky about it due to counterfeit notes)

ในฐานะที่เป็นศูนย์กลางทางเศรษฐกิจตอนบนของของเมียนมาร์ (Myanmar) และเป็นราชธานีสุดท้ายก่อน “พม่าเสียเมือง” อาจทำให้ “มัณฑะเล” เป็นที่จดจำของคนทั่วไป แต่แท้จริงแล้วเมืองโบราณที่อยู่ใกล้กันอีก 3 เมืองคือ “สะแคง” “อังวะ” และ “อมรปุระ”  เสริมคุณค่าให้ “มัณฑะเล” ทอประกายงดงามทางศิลปะ วัฒนธรรม และประวัติศาสตร์ยิ่งขึ้นไปอีก

ต้องย้อนกลับไปที่ ค.ศ. 1287 หลังจากอาณาจักรพุกามล่มสลายจากการถูกกองทัพจีนมองโกลตีแตก พม่ายุคนั้นแตกเป็นเมืองเล็กเมืองน้อย  รวมกลุ่มชาติพันธุ์ได้ที่ไหนก็ตั้งราชธานีที่นั่น

ขณะที่ชาวมอญตั้งราชธานี “แบ่กู” (Bago หรือ “พะโค”) ที่พม่าตอนล่าง ในเขตพม่าตอนบนก็มีเจ้าไทยใหญ่ (ฉาน) สร้างเมือง “สะแคง” (Sagaing หรือไทยเรียกว่า “จักกาย”)  ที่อยู่ริมแม่น้ำอิระวดีฝั่งตะวันตกเป็นราชธานี แต่ยืนยาวได้ไม่ถึง 60 ปีมีการรบพุ่งกันจนเมืองแตกอีกครั้ง ผู้กำชัยสถาปนา “อังวะ” (Inwa)  ที่อยู่ฝั่งตรงข้ามเป็นเมืองหลวงแทน บ้านเมืองสงบสุขอยู่ได้นานถึงเกือบ 400 ปี ก่อนมีการสร้าง “อมรปุระ”(Amarapura) ซึ่งอยู่เหนือกรุงอังวะเล็กน้อย เป็นราชธานีแห่งใหม่และยืนยาว 76 ปี ตามมาด้วย “มัณฑะเล” (Mandalay) ที่กลายเป็นราชธานีสุดท้าย อายุเพียง 28 ปี 

…..อดีตราชธานีของพม่าตอนบนเหล่านี้ ล้วนแต่มีความงดงามต่างกันโดยมีแม่น้ำอิระวดีเป็นศูนย์กลาง….. 

“สะแคง” ราชธานีเก่าของฉาน เต็มไปด้วยเจดีย์สีขาว บ้างก็แต่งแต้มด้วยยอดสีทองเรียงรายบนเนินเขา ตามความเชื่อโบราณถือเป็นเขาพระสุเมรุ  โดยนักท่องเที่ยวหลายคนนิยมชมวิวที่วัดอูมินทงแซ (Uminthounzeh)  ซึ่งมีพระพุทธรูป 45 องค์เรียงรายอยู่ภายในถ้ำ

มาที่เมือง “อังวะ” ที่เป็นราชธานียาวนานกว่าใครดูกว้างใหญ่ ผสมผสานร่องรอยประวัติศาสตร์ทั้งใหม่และเก่า มีสัญลักษณ์เป็นสะพานเหล็กข้ามแม่น้ำอิระวดี เก่าแก่สร้างโดยอังกฤษเมื่อปี 1934 ก่อนที่จะระเบิดทิ้งเสียเองในปี 1942 เพื่อไม่ให้ญี่ปุ่นใช้ประโยชน์ นอกจากนี้ยังมีเจดีย์สำคัญอีกหลายแห่ง เช่น ติไหล่ชิน (Htilaingshin Paya) ที่สร้างตั้งแต่สมัยพุกาม เป็นต้น

ส่วน “อมรปุระ” แม้ตัวพระราชวังเดิมและกำแพงเมืองจะถูกรื้อถอนไปใช้ประโยชน์ในสมัยอื่นเสียแล้ว แต่ก็ยังอบอวลด้วยบรรยากาศเมืองเก่า มีสะพานอูเบ่ง (U Bein) ทำด้วยไม้สักเก่าแก่อายุ 200 กว่าปีทอดยาว 1.2 กิโลเมตรเหนือทะเลสาบต่าวตะหมั่น (Taungthaman) เป็นสัญลักษณ์และวัดขนาดใหญ่จำนวนมาก ชาวบ้านยึดอาชีพทอผ้าเป็นหลักจนเป็นผลิตภัณฑ์ประจำเมือง

สำหรับ “มัณฑะเล” สร้างโดยพระเจ้ามินดงเมื่อปี 1857 แม้ขณะนั้นพม่ายังเต็มไปด้วยคติและวิถีชีวิตดั้งเดิม แต่ นักล่าอาณานิคมจากตะวันตกเริ่มคืบคลานเข้ามามีบทบาทในประเทศมากขึ้นทุกที 

กระทั่งมาถึงยุคพระเจ้าตีป่อ (หรือ สีป่อ) ครองบัลลังก์แทนพระเจ้ามินดง  สถานการณ์ของพม่าอาจคล้ายคลึงกับไทยที่ถูกกดดันจากฝรั่งเศสและอังกฤษที่ต่างหาเหตุเข้ามาแสวงหาผลประโยชน์ แต่ที่แตกต่างคือพระเจ้าตีป่อหันไปฝักใฝ่ฝรั่งเศสทำให้อังกฤษเสียสิทธิการค้า จนอ้างเหตุยกกองทัพมาตีพม่าจนเสียเอกราชนับตั้งแต่วันขึ้นปีใหม่ของปี 1886 และพระเจ้าตีป่อกลายเป็น “กษัตริย์องค์สุดท้าย” ของพม่า  โดยถูกเนรเทศไปอยู่อินเดียนาน 30 ปีตราบจนสิ้นพระชนม์ 

โชคดีที่อังกฤษเห็นคุณค่าของศิลปวัฒนธรรม ยินดีบูรณะสืบสานพระราชวังมัณฑะเล แม้จะเป็นไปไม่ได้ที่คนรุ่นหลังจะได้ชื่นชมพระราชวังที่ทำด้วยไม้สักทั้งหมดเช่นในอดีต แต่ก็ยังเติมเต็มร่องรอยอารยธรรม โดยแผนผังของเมืองถอดแบบ “อมรปุระ” ด้วยลักษณะสี่เหลี่ยมจัตุรัส กำแพงเมืองยาวเกือบ 2 กิโลเมตรล้อมรอบด้วยคูน้ำ ซึ่งมาจากความเชื่อเรื่อง “แผนภูมิจักรวาล” แบบพราหมณ์

บริเวณใกล้พระราชวัง มีภูเขามัณฑะเล (Mandalay Hill) ตระหง่านงาม นอกจากนี้ยังวัดมหามุนี (Mahamuni Paya) ซึ่งมีอีกชื่อหนึ่งว่าวัดระไค ตามชื่อเมืองเดิม “ระไค” (Rakhaing ไทยเรียกว่า “ยะไข่”) ที่พระมหามุนีเคยประดิษฐาน ก่อนถูกหั่นออกเป็นสามท่อนเพื่อเคลื่อนย้ายมาที่นี่ 

หนึ่งในพระพุทธรูปที่สำคัญที่สุดในพม่าอายุกว่าพันปีองค์นี้หล่อด้วยสำริด มีความสูงประมาณ 4 เมตร กระทั่งถูกไฟไหม้ครั้งใหญ่ซึ่งเกิดขึ้นก่อนที่พม่าจะเสียเมือง 1 ปี จนเชื่อกันว่าเป็น “ลางบอกเหตุ”  เผาวัดเสียวอดวาย และทำให้พื้นผิวขององค์พระมหามุนีขรุขระ อย่างที่สมเด็จกรมพระยาดำรงราชานุภาพบรรยายไว้ในพระนิพนธ์ “เที่ยวเมืองพม่า” ว่าเหมือน “หนังไก่ย่น” 

ทว่าผู้คนยิ่งเลื่อมใสศรัทธาพากันปิดทองซ้ำทับไปทับมาบนองค์พระจนมีความหนาเพิ่มขึ้น 15 เซนติเมตร จะเว้นก็แต่ฤดูฝนที่ปิดทองไม่ได้ เพราะทรงจีวร  อย่างไรก็ตาม จะเป็นฤดูไหนผู้หญิงก็หมดสิทธิ์เข้าไปปิดทองโดยเด็ดขาด ต้องไหว้วานผู้ชายช่วยจัดการให้  แต่ที่ทุกเพศวัยต่างมีโอกาสเหมือนกันคือตื่นแต่เช้ามืดเพื่อเข้าร่วมพิธีชำระพระพักตร์ของพระมหามุนีในช่วงตี 4 

ตามด้วยอาหารเช้าขึ้นชื่อของมัณฑะเล เป็นขนมจีนไก่กระทิน้ำพริกเผา โรยหมี่กรอบ บีบมะนาว ใส่หอมแดงหั่นเป็นแว่น ละม้ายคล้ายคลึงกับ “ข้าวซอย”  ซึ่งชาวมัณฑะเลนิยมไปนั่งกินกันที่ร้าน Shwe Pyi Moe Cafe ข้างพระราชวัง

ในวัดมหามุนียังมีรูปหล่อสำริดศิลปะเขมร คือ พระอิศวร สิงห์และช้างเอราวัณ ที่ดั้งเดิมเป็นสมบัติเขมร ก่อนตกเป็นของไทยอยู่ 146 ปีหลังจากที่ยกทัพไปตีเมืองพระนคร จากนั้นก็ผลัดมือมาเป็นของพม่าเมื่อครั้งเสียกรุงศรีอยุธยาจวบจนปัจจุบัน 

นอกจากราชธานีโบราณเหล่านี้แล้ว ทางตอนบนของ “มัณฑะเล” ประมาณ 10 กิโลเมตรยังมีเมือง “มิงกุน”(Mingun) ที่โดดเด่นด้วยระฆังใหญ่ที่สุดในโลกมีน้ำหนักเกือบ 90 ตัน และซากเจดีย์มิงกุนที่สร้างเมื่อ 1797 แต่ก็ไม่อาจสำเร็จลุล่วงเนื่องจากเป็นโครงการก่อสร้างที่มโหฬารเกินกำลัง กระหน่ำซ้ำด้วยแผ่นดินไหว ทำให้ยอดถล่มลงมาเหลือแต่ช่วงฐานสูงประมาณ 50 เมตรและปรากฏรอยแยกผ่ากลางอย่างชัดเจน

การได้มาเยือน “มัณฑะเลย์” และเมืองเก่าแก่รายล้อมเหล่านี้จึงถือเป็นประสบการณ์อิ่มเอมใจไม่ยิ่งหย่อนกว่าไป “พุกาม” ด้วยคุณค่าที่ถักประสานกิ่งก้านอารยธรรมของพม่าตอนบนไว้อย่างงดงามแน่นหนา

พอบินมาถึงย่างกุ้ง เราก็ตัดสินใจบินต่อไปมัณฑะเลย์ ซึ่งอยู่ตอนกลางของประเทศเหนือพุกามไปหน่อยนึง เพื่อจะได้ประหยัดเวลาการนั่งรถบัส 12 ชม. (แต่ตอนหลังก็ไปเมืองอื่นไม่ทันอยู่ดี) ซึ่งตอนแรกไม่อยากขึ้น เพราะสนามบินมัณฑะเลย์ได้รับการประณามทั้งเรื่องเกณฑ์แรงงานมาสร้าง และเรื่องเป็นการร่วมมืออันดีระหว่างรัฐบาลไทย-พม่าในการโกงกินงบประมาณ

เล่านิทานกันต่อ หลังจากพุกามล่มสลาย พม่าก็มีโอกาสแจ้งเกิดอีกครั้งสมัยพระเจ้าตะเบงชเวตี้ และรุ่งขีดสุดตอนพระเจ้าบุเรงนอง ซึ่งประวัติศาสตร์แถวนี้น่าจะคุ้นๆกันบ้างเนอะเพราะตรงกะเสียกรุงครั้งที่ 1 ของสยามประเทศ โดยเมืองหลวงตอนแรกอยู่ที่ ตองอู ตอนหลังค่อยย้ายมาที่ หงสาวดี หรือ พะโค (Bago) ในปัจจุบัน ซึ่งก็ไปตีเอาเมืองของมอญมาอีกละ อยู่เหนือย่างกุ้งไปนิดเดียวเอง หลังจากนั้นก็เสื่อมลงเรื่อยๆอีก

จนอาณาจักรสุดท้ายของพม่าได้ตั้งขึ้นอีกทีตอนสมัยพระเจ้าอลองพญา ซึ่งก็ตรงกะเสียกรุงครั้งที่ 2 คราวนี้เมืองหลวงมาอยู่ ย่างกุ้ง ละ โดยไปขโมยเมืองหลวงของมอญมาอีกตามเคย หลังจากนั้นก็เสื่อมลงตามประสาแล้วก็ย้ายเมืองหลวงกันเรื่อยเจื้อย

มัณฑะเลย์ (ปกติเราจะขี้เกียจพิมเต็มยศแบบนี้ เพราะลำบากมาก แต่คำนี้สะกดได้แรดดีเลยต้องใช้ต่อไป) ราชธานีสุดท้ายของพม่า (ตรงกับช่วงรัชกาลที่ 5 ของไทย) ก่อนจะเสียเอกราชให้อังกฤษเต็มตัว หลังจากย้ายเมืองหลวงมาหลายแห่ง พระเจ้ามินดง (กษัตริย์รองสุดท้าย) ย้ายมาอยู่ที่นี่ และสร้างพระราชวังมัณฑะเลย์ ซึ่งอลังการงานสร้างมาก ยาวด้านละ 2 กม. คูกว้างๆรอบวังอีก (กว้างกว่าจิตรรดามากนัก) ตัววังเองเค้าว่ากันว่างดงามอลังการตามแบบศิลปะมัณฑะเลย์ (ของไทยช่วงนั้นสร้างแต่ศิลปะยุโรปซะส่วนใหญ่ไปแล้ว แต่นั่นอาจจะเป็นเหตุผลที่ทำให้ไม่เสียเมือง)

เล่ากันมาว่าตอนสร้างวัังนี่ทำตามความเชื่อพราหมณ์ คือ ต้องฝั่งคนเป็นๆรอบวัง ทั้งหมด 50 กว่าคน แค่ตรงใต้บัลลังก์สีหนาทของพระเจ้ามินดงก็ฝังเข้าไป 2 คนละ นั่งว่าราชการไปไม่สยองขวัญไปบ้างรึไงนะ แต่อีกกระแสว่าไม่ได้ใช้คนจิงๆละ ใช้เป็นโอ่งใส่น้ำฝังแทน ซึ่งตอนนั้นอังกฤษยึดย่างกุ้งไปละ ยังเหลือข้างบนที่ยังรอดอยู่ พอพระเจ้ามินดงตาย ก็ไม่ได้เลือกลูกคนไหนมาสืบต่อ เพราะเคยเลือกไว้คนนึง ก็โดนพี่น้องด้วยกันลอบฆ่าไปซะก่อน ประวัติศาสตร์ช่วงนี้มีสีสันมาก มรว.คึกฤทธิ์เอามาเขียนเรื่อง พม่าเสียเมือง (อยากอ่านเหมือนกัน) และถึงขั้นเอามาทำละครเรื่องเพลิงพระนาง (หนูไม่เคยดู เลยอยากกลับไปดูใหม่เลยเนี่ย) ลูกๆทั้งหลายของพระเจ้ามินดงก็ตบตีๆ แต่เจอพระนางอเลนันดอกะลูกๆซึ่งร้ายกว่าผู้ใด ก็เล็ง พระเจ้าสีป่อ ไว้ เพราะดูว่าง่าย เลยให้ลูกสาวคนโตไปแต่งงานด้วย แล้วก็ตบตีๆจนพระเจ้าสีป่อได้เป็นกษัตริย์องค์ถัดมาและเป็นองค์สุดท้ายของพม่า แต่ลูกสาวคนรองคือ พระนางศุภยาลัต ร้ายย่ิงกว่าตัวแม่อีก ก็ตบตีๆจนได้เป็นมเหสีพระเจ้าสีป่อกะเค้าด้วย จนตอนหลังตบตีแย่งชิงกะพี่สาวตัวเอง แล้วก็ลอบฆ่าพี่สาวตัวเองอีก จนแม่คือพระนางอเลนันดอยังยอมแพ้ความร้ายของชี หลังจากร่วมกันผลักดันพระเจ้าสีป่อขึ้นเป็นกษัตริย์ได้ใหม่ๆ ตัวแม่และตัวลูกก็ร่วมมือกันกำจัดคู่แข่งที่เหลือ จัดเป็นงานเลี้ยงฉลองในวังสามวันสามคืน มีมโหรสพเสียงดัง แต่ด้านหลังมีทหารคอยมาจับพวกพระญาติคู่แข่งไปทุบด้วยท่อนจันทร์ ว่ากันว่าเกือบร้อยคน เลยต้องใช้เวลาสามวันถึงฆ่าหมด ระหว่างฆ่าก็มีเสียงกรีดร้องลอดออกมา พระนางศุภยาลัตก็จะบอกให้วงดนตรีเล่นเสียงดังๆกลบเสียงร้อง ไม่งั้นเดี๋ยวพระเจ้าสีป่อจับได้ แต่ว่ากันว่าจิงๆแล้วพระเจ้าสีป่อก็รู้ แต่กัวเจ๊ทแม่ลูกนี่มากกว่าเลยได้แต่สงบปากสงบคำ หลังจากฆ่าเสร็จก็เอาไปฝังหลังวัง ศพก็ขึ้นอืดดันกันขึ้นมาจนต้องเอาช้างไปเหยียบให้จม จนหลังๆทนไม่ได้ต้องเอาไปลอยน้ำแทน และด้วยความร้ายกาจของตัวแม่ตัวลูก ประชาชนก็ลำบากและเกลียดชีด้วย พวกชีก็เกลียดอังกฤษแต่บ้านเมืองก็ง่อยเหลือเกิน เพราะคนเก่งๆโดนชีฆ่าตายหมดแล้ว จนพออังกฤษมายึดก็ยึดได้อย่างง่ายดาย แล้วก็เนรเทศพระเจ้าสีป่อและแม่ลูกนี่ไปอยู่อินเดีย ซึ่งชีก็ยังคงความร้ายกาจจิกใช้คนใช้เยี่ยงทาส วางตัวเป็นพระนางตลอดเวลา แต่ตอนหลังเห็นว่าแม่ทนลูกสาวนี่ไม่ไหวขอหนีกลับมาอยู่พม่า ส่วนลูกสาวพระเจ้าสีป่อก็ว่ากันว่าร้ายเหมือนแม่เรย ใครอยากอ่านดีเทวตอนตบตีๆ ลองอ่านได้ที่ เวบนี้ แต่จะดีกว่าคงต้องไปอ่านเรื่อง พม่าเสียเมือง ของ มรว.คึกฤทธิ์ (อาจจะใส่สีไปหน่อย แต่สนุกดีนะ)

แต่เราไม่ได้พระราชวังมัณฑะเลย์หรอกนะ เพราะวังนี้เจอทั้งอังกฤษขุดลอกสมบัติไปมากมาย แล้วยังมาเจอระเบิดลงตอนสงครามโลกอีก รัฐบาลก็เพิ่งจะมาสร้างอย่างไพร่ๆตอนจะดูดนักท่องเที่ยวนี่แหละ ก็เลยไม่รู้จะไปดูของปอมๆทำไม แถมต้องเสียค่าเข้าคอมโบเจ๊ท 4 สถานที่ 10$ หนูไม่สนับสนุนค่ะ

เราก็เลยไปวัด ชเวนันดอว์ (ชื่อคล้ายไปคล้ายมาทั้งประเทศอย่างนี้แหละ ชเว แปลว่า ทอง) ซึ่งเป็นที่พระเจ้ามินดงมาอยู่ก่อนตาย ซึ่งรอดจากระเบิดและยังคงมีศิลปะมัณฑะเลย์อยู่ ใครอยากชื่นชมศิลปะมัณฑะเลย์ก็ควรจะมาที่นี่มากกว่า

วัดชเวนันดอว์ แต่ก็ยังเสียค่าเข้า 10$ คอมโบอ่ะ เราเลยขอส่องจากข้างนอกแทน ซึ่งแค่นี้ก็ชื่นชมความอลังการแล้ว ดีเทวงานไม้ที่แกะสลักละเอียดยิบมาก

เราก็เลยไปวัดนี้แทนคือ ชเวอินบิง ซึ่งคนไม่ค่อยจะมากันหรอก แต่โลนลี่แพลนเนทนบอกว่าวัดนี้ก็สงบดี และมีลวดลายก็พอใช้ได้เหมือนกัน เราเลยได้เดินเข้าไปดูข้างในเป็นเรือนไม้ (แต่รูปที่หนูถ่ายมาไม่งามเรย เพราะวันนั้นแดดน้อยฝนตก)

แล้วก็ไปดูวัด สันตมุณี ซึ่งมีพระไตรปิฏก สลักบนหินอ่อน 1774 แผ่น จิงๆแล้ววัดนี้สร้างต่อจากวัดกุโสดอว์ซึ่งขึ้นชื่อว่า The world’s biggest book เพราะมี 729 แผ่นหินอ่อนที่จารึกพระไตรปิฏก แต่วัดกุโสดอว์เสียเงิน ในขณะที่วัดสันตมุณีไม่ ทั้งๆที่หน้าตาเหมือนกันเป๊ะ จนคนก็สับสนเหมือนกัน ก็ไม่รู้จะเลือกปฎิบัติทำไมกัน

วัดสันตมุณี แต่ละเจดีย์จะมีแผ่นหินอ่อนอันเบ้อเริ่ม 1 อัน

ไปจาริกแสวงบุญกันต่อที่ วัดมหามุนี มีเรื่องมีราวอีกแล้ว วัดนี้เป็น 1 ใน 5 สิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์ที่ควรจะไปไหว้ (หนึ่งในนั้น ก็มี ชเวดากอง) เชื่อกันว่าสร้างตั้งแต่พุทธศตวรรษที่ 1 หรือเรียกได้ว่าร่วมสมัยกับพระพุทธเจ้าเลย ที่ว่ามากกว่านั้น เป็นพระพุทธรูปที่สร้างแบบจากพระพุทธเจ้าองค์จริงตอนมาเยี่ยมเยือน แคว้นยะไข่ (หรือ อาระกัน) ซึ่งก็มีความเป็นไปได้ เพราะยะไข่นี่ติดอินเดียเลย ผู้คนก็หน้าตาผสมพม่าและอินเดีย (ผิวพม่า นัยน์ตาแขก) และแคว้นนี่ก็ตั้งขึ้นแต่ 2500 ปีก่อนพร้อมมอญและปยู แต่จริงเท็จแค่ไหนไม่มีใครรู้ และคงไม่อยากรู้เพราะอยากเชื่อแบบนี้ไปเรื่อยดีๆกว่า พระมหามุนีก็เป็นที่เลื่องลือว่างดงามมาก เป็นที่ภาคภูมิใจของชาวยะไข่ และชาวยะไข่ก็ไม่เคยตกเป็นของพม่ามาก่อนเลยนะ ถึงแม้ว่ากษัตริย์องค์ก่อนๆพยายามจะตียะไข่เพราะได้ยินกิตติศัพท์ความงามของพระมหามุนี จนเมื่อ 200 ปีก่อน พระเจ้าปดุงของพม่าเกิดไปตี ยะไข่ ได้ (ตรงกะช่วง ร. 2) ก็เลยอัญเชิญ (หรือชาวยะไข่คงอยากเรียกว่า ขโมย) พระมหามุนีมาไว้ที่มัณฑะเลย์

เนื่องจากเชื่อว่าเป็นพระพุทธรูปที่พระพุทธเจ้าประทานลมหายใจให้ เลยต้องมีพิธีล้างหน้าทุกเช้า (เหมือนคนจริงๆที่ต้องล้างหน้าทุกเช้าไง) ซึ่งชาวบ้านที่ศรัทธาจะตื่นกันตั้งกะตีสาม เพื่อรีบเอาผ้าขนหนูของตัวเองมาวาง เพื่อให้มีโอกาสให้หลวงพ่อที่วัดหยิบไปเช็ดหน้า วันๆนึงก็มากองเป็นตั้ง กว่าจะเช็ดเสร็จครบทุกผืนก็ใช้เวลาเป็นชม. ผ้าที่ได้รับการเช็ดก็จะเอาไปบูชากันต่ออีก น้ำที่ล้างก็เอาไปเป็นสิริมงคลเหมือนกัน เป็นประมาณน้ำอบน่ะ ซึ่งเราไม่ได้ตื่นไปกะเค้าหรอกนะ อาศัยอ่านจากหนังสือเอาก็พอละ อิอิ

พระมหามุนี เราเข้าไปแค่นี้อ่ะ ที่นี่ต้องแบ่งโซนไหว้พระ ผู้ชายอยู่หน้า ผู้หญิงอยู่หลัง และผู้ชายเท่านั้นที่มีโอกาสเข้าไปปิดทอง ซึ่งศรัทธาสูงส่งจนหน้าตักของพระมหามุนีบวมปูด ตอนแรกนึกว่าสร้างกันมาแบบนี้ แต่ไม่ใช่ค่ะ แปะทองกันจนบวมปูดค่ะ ถ้ามีโอกาสได้เข้าไปกดดูจะรู้สึกนิ่มเลย

ที่วัดนี้มีศิลปะขอมโผล่มาด้วย เป็นรูปปั้นที่ผ่านการเดินทางมากมาย ตั้งแต่ไทยไปตีขอมแล้วเอามาไว้สมัยอยุธยา จนพระเจ้าบุเรงนองไปตีอยุธยาก็เอามาไว้ที่นี่ ซึ่งเชื่อกันว่าไปลูบๆแล้วสุขภาพจะแข็งแรง

หลังจากนั้นก็ไปดูร้านทำ Gold Leaf ซึ่งเอาไว้ไหว้พระ หนูก็นึกว่าทองเป็นแผ่นรูปใบไม้ ก็ด๊ีด๊าจะไป ปกิสว่า...คือทองคำเปลว ก็เลยได้เรียนศัพท์ใหม่ไปในตัว และก็เพ่ิงรู้ว่า เค้าตีกันด้วยแรงงานแบบนี้จนบาง แล้วก็ตัดเป็นแผ่นด้วยกรรไกรกันบ้านๆอย่างนี้เลย

เราไป Mandalay Hill มาด้วย ซึ่งต้องนั่งรถขึ้นไปบนเขามีวัดอยู่ด้านบน เห็นวิวมัณฑะเลย์งดงาม แต่เก็บค่าถ่ายรูป หนูละเซ็ง (ที่ไม่ยอมจ่ายเพราะอากาศแย่ ถ่ายรูปไปก็ไม่สวยด้วย) จิงๆต้องเสียค่าเข้าด้วย แต่ไกด์หนูซอกแซกจนไม่ต้องจ่าย วิวจากข้างบนก็ดีนะ  เห็นพระราชวังมัณฑะเลย์ว่าใหญ่จิงๆ เป็นเมืองที่มีเจดีย์ทองๆแทรกไปกับสนามกอล์ฟ…ความแตกต่างระหว่างรวยกะจนที่นี่มันกว้างจัง

ในวันเดียวกัน เราก็เดินทางต่อไป อมรปุระ เมืองหลวงก่อนหน้ามัณฑะเลย์ แต่เราพอแล้วสำหรับวัด เป้าหมายมีที่เดียวคือ สะพานอูเบ็ง (จิงๆคนที่อยากไปคือแม่) ซึ่งเป็นสะพานไม้สักยาวที่สุดในโลก เกิดจากไปรื้อวังไม้จากเมือง อังวะ มาสร้าง ก็เป็นที่พักผ่อนและดูชีวิตชาวพม่าได้ดีเหมือนกันนะ

สะพานอูเบ็ง สร้างมา 200 ปี ยาวประมาณ 1 กม.

พระน้อยก็มาเดินด้วย แถวนี้มีวัดอยู่มากมายน่ะ ชาวบ้านอีกฝั่งก็ใช้สะพานเดินข้ามไปเพื่อไปหมู่บ้านอีกด้าน ไม่ได้สร้างสะพานขึ้นมาอย่างจัสๆนะ

พอมองลงไปในทะเลสาบ จะเห็นคนยืนตกปลาในน้ำมากมาย เลยรู้ว่าทะเลสาบน้ำตื้น แต่ทำไมต้องลงไปตกถึงในน้ำเลยล่ะ

วันที่เราไปฝนตกหนักเชียว น้ำท่วมเละเทะแบบนี้ สภาพอดีตเมืองหลวงอันยิ่งใหญ่อีกเช่นกัน

สุดท้ายนี้ มี Soe Soe มาโฆษณา เป็นคนขับสามล้อประจำตัวของเราขณะอยู่มัณฑะเลย์ พูดอังกิดได้เยอะทีเดียว และแสดงความกระตือรือร้นอยากฝึกภาษาอังกิดมาก (และอยากได้เงินด้วย) แต่ด้วยความซื่อและดูไว้ใจได้ ก็เลยใช้บริการตลอดเรย (จิงๆอยากกระจายรายได้) ทั้งถีบสามล้อในมัณฑะเลย์ และให้เป็นไกด์พาเที่ยวทั่วจนไปถึงอมรปุระ (แต่อันนี้จ้างแทกซี่ไปนะ) แถมพาซอกแซกเข้าฟรีบ้างอย่างได้ (เราเก็บเงินค่าเข้าคอมโบ 10$ ไปจ่ายให้โซวๆและแทกซี่แทน รู้สึกดีใจกว่ามาก) ซึ่งโซวๆมีความฝันอยากเป็นไกด์ (ตอนนี้อายุ 25) เลยพยายามเรียนภาษาอังกิดด้วยตัวเอง จากการถีบสามล้อรับส่งชาวต่างชาตินี่แหละ และหวังว่าจะเก็บเงินไปลงเรียนเป็นไกด์ได้ โซวๆเล่าให้ฟังด้วยว่าแต่ก่อนเคยบวชเป็นพระอยู่ 3 ปี (เรื่องปกติของที่นี่) ซึ่งอาจารย์ของเค้าซึ่งเป็นพระที่พม่าไปยุ่งเกี่ยวการเมืองมากเกินไป เลยต้องลี้ภัยไปอยู่สวิส เค้าไม่ได้ติดต่ออาจารย์เลย จนเมื่อสองปีก่อน นักท่องเที่ยวฝร่ังเศสคนนึงสอนเค้าสมัครฮอทเมวเป็นครั้งแรก เลยได้ส่งเมวไปหาอาจารย์เป็นครั้งแรก ตอนนี้เค้าก็เลยจะเชคเมวเป็นระยะๆอาทิตย์ละ 2 ครั้ง ใครสนใจใช้บริการก็เมวไปหาได้ที่ soep20@gmail.com (ที่พม่า gmail เร็วกว่า hotmail หรือ yahoo คอมเฟิมโดยโซวๆ)
