Manchmal lässt sich die Anerkennung, die ein Künstler oder eine Künstlerin genießt, am Kleingedruckten auf dem CD-Booklet ablesen, nämlich an den Namen der Gastmusiker, die alle den Zusatz tragen: “appears courtesy of”. Und bei diesem Album sind es Namen wie Jerry Douglas, Stuart Duncan, Chris Eldridge, Byron House, Paul Kowert, Mike Marshall, Tim O’Brien, Aoife O’Donovan, Darrell Scott und Chris Thile. Sie alle wirken mit auf der Debüt-CD einer 17-jährigen Mandolinenspielerin, Gitarrenspielerin, Banjospielerin, Klavierspielerin und vor allem Sängerin: Sarah Jarosz. Vor mehr als zwei Jahren hatten wir hier im Blog über sie berichtet. Seitdem habe ich aber vor allem vom Küken Sierra Hull gehört. Dabei geht die etwa gleichaltrige Sarah einen beachtlichen Weg. Ihre Stimme klingt nach Rickie Lee Jones und derart reif, dass man sie jederzeit viel älter schätzen würde – beim Hören. Auch ihr Songwriting geht schon jetzt in die Tiefe. Während Sierra Hull das fröhlich plappernde Teenie-Girl gibt, wirkt Sarah Jarosz wie das Gegenteil.

Auf ihrer ersten, bei Sugar Hill Records in diesem Sommer erschienenen CD “Song Up In Her Head” klingt sie wesentlich mehr nach “Crooked Still” als nach irgendetwas Anderem aus der Nähe des Bluegrass. Atmosphäre steht über Virtuosität. Es sind fast ausschließlich eigene Songs, die sie mal mit komplettem Bluegrass-Instrumentarium orchestriert, mal im Trio oder Duo in eine intime Stimmung taucht. Etwa, wenn sie zum Finale des Albums ihren “Little Song” im Duett mit Chris Thile bestreitet. So machen die kleinen Dinge noch mehr Spaß. Mal gespannt, was da für eine Musiker-Generation heranreift – siehe auch diesen Ausschnitt von 2008, wo Sarah Jarosz gemeinsam mit Samson Grisman (Bass) und Alex Hargreaves (Fiddle) den Bill-Withers-Klassiker “Grandma´s Hands” interpretiert. Cool.

Gestern hatte Hannah Georgia Johnson, Sängerin und Mandolinenspielerin der “Toy Hearts”, hier schon was erzählt zu ihrer persönlichen Mando-Geschichte und ihren Lieblingen am Instrument. Jetzt folgt der zweite Teil: zu ihrem musikalischen Hintergrund und über die Liebe zu einer bestimmten Mando – die bestimmt viele mit ihr teilen.

Die Frage, welche Musik mich am meisten beeinflusst hat, ist sehr schwer zu beantworten, da ich alle möglichen Arten von Musik höre. Ich denke, dass die Offenheit gegenüber Musik wirklich wichtig dafür war, den Sound der Toy Hearts (was immer das sein mag) zu entwickeln. Ich gehöre nicht zu den Leuten, die beim Musikhören das Bedürfnis haben, alles gleich einordnen und in eine Schublade stecken zu müssen. Sowas schottet Dich ab. Wenn ich etwas höre, das mir gefällt, spielt es für mich keine Rolle, um welchen Stil es da geht. Ich hoffe, dass unsere Auftritte die Bandbreite der Musik zeigen, die uns beeinflusst hat, mich, meine Schwester und meinen Dad in unterschiedlicher Weise. Ich selbst höre eine Menge früher Country-Music, ich liebe Keith Whitley, George Jones, Merle Haggard, auch Patsy Cline, Hank Williams und Elvis Presley sind große Inspirationen für mich gewesen. Ich höre eine Menge Bluegrass, neuen und alten. Ich liebe Soul, besonders Otis Redding. Außerdem die Beatles, die ich als Heranwachsende viel gehört habe. Western Swing und Gypsy Jazz gehören zu meiner CD-Sammlung, ich liebe J. S. Bach … die Liste hört nicht auf … Das Einzige, was mich nicht interessiert, ist Club Music: Dance, House, Trance gehören definitiv nicht zu meinen Favoriten.

Mein Instrument? Ich spiele eine F-Mandoline von Epiphone. Die war für den Anfang ganz gut, aber ich würde sie jetzt nicht als großartige Mandoline bezeichnen. Wie auch immer, derzeit muss ich mein Studium finanzieren (ich bin im dritten und letzten Jahr) und kann mir meine Traummandoline nicht leisten. Das wäre eine F-Style-Collings … oder irgendeine Collings für diesen Zweck. Als wir auf unserer Tour in Austin, Texas, auftraten, wo deren Fabrik steht, konnte ich mir eine borgen. Es war die beste Mandoline, die ich jemals gespielt habe, und ich hoffe es kommt der Tag, an dem ich mir meine eigene leisten kann.

Hinsichtlich Plektren verwende ich welche aus Schildpatt und Wegen-Picks in Triangel-Form. Beim Bluegrass ist ein hartes Pick wirklich essentiell für den Klang Deines Chops! Ich nutze D´Addario EXP-Saiten von mittlerer oder hoher Stärke. Ich selbst betrachte mich in erster Linie als Sängerin und danach als Schülerin in Sachen Mandoline! Ich muss noch eine Menge lernen und besser werden. Und das ist momentan eine Reise, die ich so gut wie möglich sowohl durchlebe als auch genieße.

So I finally caved and bought dulse from Eating Well Organically. Along with ridiculously good unpasteurized, organic almonds from Italy. OH SO GOOD.

The verdict: almonds = BEST ALMONDS I EVER DID TASTE ; dulse = volcanized rubber-bacon. Yeah, you heard me right. Now I’m pretty good at adapting to weird eclectic tastes, but this stuff just can’t do it to me. Oh but maybe time will change things…(doubtful, however.)

I also tried to make eggplant lasagna à la fitnessista style. Unfortunately, I only had enough eggplant “lasagna sheets” to make one serving. And I gave that to my mom. And I didn’t take a picture of it assembled. Whoops. But I can testify to roasted garlic being a really aromatic flavour in the house. OK, and I did have a bite, and the thing was absolutely delicious. I didn’t know eggplant was so good baked! Mmm.

I finally found Soy-lecithin-free (hand-made) chocolate! Caved. Like $5 for a thing that’s the size of my two thumbs. (okay fine, exaggeration but still.) This is “forte” from Organic Fair. Their large selection of gourmet flavours make me drool with the prospect of trying them all: check it out here.

I bought a fancy schmancy mandoline off Kijiji, by Oxo. Retails at like $70 US – I had never seen such an expensive mandoline before. Evah.

Which is why when the manual says WARNING: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO USE HANDS TO GRATE VEGETABLES, you should adhere. Or rather, I should adhere.

Those are Broccoli sprouts. Yes, I caved in and finally bought them. Oh but interestingly I find out that Healthy Foods and More on Bridgeport sells broccoli sprouting seeds!! So I bought like, a handful’s worth. AND GUESS WHAT THE UNIT PRICE IS?! It’s something ridiculous like $120 per kg!!!!! HOLY CRAP. Anyways. This thing better sprout reeeal well, I’m tellin’ ya. Reeal well.

Remember my old yoga mat? Yes, it’s true that I was depressed for about 3 hours following the sale, but that was quickly halted when Tree of Life came in.

It’s the most gorgeous yoga mat I could have ever wanted. But the best part is that I got it from Chapters, where I had an $18 coupon/gift card. Yes! I am a winner!

Ever heard of probiotics? I finally caved and bought them today. $25 for a pill box. My mom was angry. Rightfully so. That’s half of my weekly grocery bill right there. Gulp. The product I purchased is the DDS-Plus with Acidophilus and Bifidobacterium. BIG science geekiness here but I feel like, as a Masters student in Microbiology, I would be able to order these bacteria strains from a catalogue and drink it straight from the nutrient broth culture. Hmmm.
What else, what else… I finally discovered what capers are, and realized that they’re the things that I absolutely love from Kathy’s dressing which I have never fully been able to deconstruct! CAPERS!!!!! GOSH I LOVE THEM. Weirdo, I am.

Last but not least, MEGHAN TELPNER IS AWESOME. Not only is she incredibly inspirational, but her zest for life is absolutely infectious, and somehow just watching her makes you want to strive to be just as happy in all circumstances that life brings your way, sunny or snowy!! When I found out that the totally groovy girl lives in Toronto, I couldn’t believe that it was actually possible to see her in person. That would be like, incredible. Although I have yet to see her in person still, I am pretty stoked to have been one of the winners of her Taste of Nature giveaway. Oh boy, oh boy, exciting stuff I tell ya! Can’t wait to try the much-talked-about Niagara Apple Country flavour! (It better live up to the hype. Or ELSE.) Kidding!

Dans le même style galant que la Sérénade de Giovanni Hoffmann dont je vous parlais dans le précédent billet, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart a composé lui aussi des pièces de musique originales pour mandoline, avec voix.

Parmi elles bien sûr, la célèbre Canzonetta “Dei vieni alla finestra” (“viens à la fenêtre”), dans le 2e acte de l’opéra Don Giovanni composé en octobre 1787. La mandoline accompagne  ici le chant amoureux de Don Giovanni à sa belle. (voir video du billet précédent sur G. Hoffmann)

Mais six ans auparavant, en 1781, et alors qu’il résidait à Munich pour y achever l‘opéra Idomeneo qu’il avait commencé à Salzbourg l’année précédente, Mozart composait déjà pour ce duo mandoline et voix, deux lieder au caractère gracieux et charmant :

• Le premier est “Die Zufriedenheit” (K 349), que l’on peut traduire par “La satisfaction”. Vous pouvez ici ou là télécharger gratuitement et légalement la partition. Et  je vous propose de l’entendre ici dans sa version originale, pour voix et piano :

• Le deuxième lied, “Komme, liebe Zither, komm” (K 351) (“viens chère Cithare, viens”) est celui que nous jouons pendant les tournées. Cette composition originale pour la mandoline et la voix, Mozart l’a dédiée à un corniste de l’orchestre de Munich nommé Lang. Une copie de l’autographe conservée aujourd’hui à Marbourg porte l’inscription “Pour M. Lang – Mozart 1780″. Le lied comporte 2 strophes d’un poète inconnu. (partition téléchargeable ici)

Vous pouvez entendre ce gracieux duo dans une version qui permet de découvrir la “zither” dont il est question dans les paroles, un ancien instrument traditionnel en Autriche…et ailleurs…et dont le timbre ici est étonnamment proche de celui de la mandoline.

Le baryton est Hermann Prey, et Takashi Ochi joue la mandoline. L’enregistrement date de 1974 et l’illustration de la video est une photo du virtuose de la “zither ” John Christian (“J. C.”) Scherer III (1876-1956).

Frei sein, noch nichtmal unbedingt high sein, aber dabei sein: das wollen wir Mandolinenspieler auf der Bühne. Vor allem Freiheit wäre schön, im Sinne von: Bewegungsfreiheit. Stattdessen hängt man als bewegungsunfähiger Sklave vor dem Mikrofon fest. Dabei gibt es so viele andere Möglichkeiten, zumindest theoretisch – Pickups eingebaut, Pickups an den Steg geklebt, Pickups an der Decke befestigt, Minimikro ins F-Loch geklemmt, Kontaktmikro auf Holz usw. usf. Wir sind alle frei, uns was auszusuchen. Das heißt, frei im Rahmen individueller finanzieller Möglichkeiten. Die wenigsten dürften in der Lage sein, sowas High-Endiges wie DPA-Mikrofone zu erwerben. Die Schertler-Mando-Pickups sind auch weit oben auf der Preisskala. Gibt´s vielleicht auch was Günstigeres, was die Mando trotzdem nach Mando klingen lässt? Der Markt ist groß, aber was taugt? Und von Zeit zu Zeit habe ich die Hoffnung, dass auf diesem Blog jemand vorbeischaut und etwas Schlaues mitzuteilen weiß – in diesem Fall zum Thema Pickup etc. Aber wahrscheinlich schreibt wieder kein Schwein … Dann geh ich eben gleich ins Mandolin Café und durchforste die ellenlangen Threads zum Thema. Und bin nachher verwirrter als vorher. Bei manchen Fragen gibt es nichts Schlimmeres als Internet-Foren. (Kann man sich da eigentlich auch mit Schweinegrippe anstecken? Bei so vielen Kontakten?)

Voila, urenlang lees- en luistergenot voor de lange winteravonden.

Wenn alten Rock-Helden nicht wirklich was Neues einfällt, gehen sie gern zurück zu ihren Wurzeln – zum Blues oder Country. So does John Fogerty: Der alte CCR-Haudegen versammelt auf “The Blue Ridge Rangers Rides Again” zwölf Stücke amerikanischer Musiktradition, die ohne Fiddle, Pedal Steel und Telecaster nicht auskommen. Aber, siehe da, auch unser Lieblingsinstrument findet ein freies Plätzchen, etwa in “Paradise“. Für dessen Bedienung sind entweder Greg Leisz oder Jason Mowery zuständig – der eine als Saitenkünstler allgegenwärtig, der andere vor allem als Fiddler von Keith Urban aufgefallen. Und weil es so selten passiert, dass eine Mando in Rockvideos auftaucht, hier das Filmchen zu “When Will I Be Loved”, einem Stück der Everly Brothers. Vielleicht erkennt jemand auch den Sangesbruder Johns, den mit der tiefen Stimme?

Es ist ja immer noch Buchmesse in Frankfurt. Deswegen folgt hier ein abschließender Blick ins Buch “Blaugrasmusik” von John Fahey – ein entscheidender:

Sucht nach einem Typen, der was Freundliches in Dur auf seinem Klavier klimpert.
Ein völlig ungefährliches Instrument.
Im Gegensatz zu einer Mandoline.
Nein.
Niemals.
Mandolinen und Banjos sind böse. Ich wußte es von Anfang an.
Blaugrasmusik ist die Musik des PAN.

Und der war bekanntlich der gefürchtete, aber gleichzeitig verehrte Hirtengott. Diese Textstelle dürfte besonders den Banjospielern gefallen, weil sie hier nicht allein die Bösen sind, sondern wir Mandolinista keinen Deut besser. Tja. Wie gut, dass wir wissen, dass es sich bei Literatur um reine Fantasie handelt (Suhrkamp 2005).

Sausage: Bavarian veal sausage (not smoked, contains parsley, take off the skin before digging in) is enjoyed with sweet mustard. Beef or pork sausages are served with Dijon mustard and/or freshly ground horseradish.

Sauerkraut: Buy loose or canned sauerkraut, slice an onion in very thin slices and briefly sauté with butter  in a saucepan. Add the sauerkraut, some caraway seeds, and a little dry white wine if desired, then heat.

Soft pretzels: Today, most people buy frozen ones that they pop into the oven for a few minutes.

And, of course … Beer, beer, beer and more beer!

decorated horses, and wear your “dirndl” or “janker.” Enjoy!

While I do confess a weakness for costume jewelry and flashy shoes, I am, in my heart, a practical girl. Whenever I’m considering a significant purchase, I ponder “Do I really need this? Can I make do without it?”

The answers were “No” and “Yes” for all three of these kitchen purchases we’ve made. But I stand behind all three. They are unnecessary indulgences that make me happy every single time I use them.

1. Mandoline — John is taking ukelele lessons but no, this is not a musical instrument. It’s a slicer.

Our mandoline isn't top of the line but it works. I didn't want to spend a lot if we might use it once then dump in in the drawer forever.

We already have knives. Good knives. Wustof knives that will very likely outlive us.

But when my kitchen hero Mark Bittman wrote an article a few years back about equipping your kitchen on the cheap, he suggested spending almost as much on a mandoline ($25) as he did on three saucepans ($30).

I went cheaper on mine but I still really like it. It’s sort of like the slicing side of your standard box grater but wider and with adjustable thicknesses. I can slice a whole onion in less than a minute and each slice can be paper thin and perfect — I love that for soups and salads. The thicker setting makes quick work of potatoes or cucumbers, provided you keep your knuckles out of the way. The slicing goes so fast that I think everyone with a mandoline probably is missing a chunk of at least one finger.

They include that food pusher handle for a reason.

2. Home seltzer maker — I found it annoying that John developed a seltzer water habit when New York City tap water is great. We’d pay money to lug home heavy bottles of something that was darned close to what we get for free, then have to recycle the bottle later.

So after he got me hooked (drat!) I was elated when I discovered SodaStream. It’s not quite as cool as the Three Stooges seltzer bottles but it’s the same idea: you infuse bubbles into tap water and voila! Seltzer water.

For about $100, you get the contraption, two bottles and a canister of C02 that says it’ll make up to 110 one-liter bottles of fizzy water. When that cartridge runs out, you exchange it for a refill for about 22 bucks. Let’s say you’re paying about $1.50 a liter for seltzer water at the store. Let’s say they overestimate the number of bottles you get by twice (just to be devil’s advocate.) For $122, you can make 110 bottles, making them $1.11 each after one refill cartridge. It gets cheaper the longer you own it because you’ve paid off the set up kit.

So it’s practical, I guess, compared to buying seltzer or soda, though still indulgent compared to turning on the tap.

This isn't precisely our coffee machine -- it looks like maybe that's been discontinued -- but it's the general idea.

3. Coffee maker with a timer — you know that cliche “wake up and smell the coffee?”

There’s a reason that’s a cliche. Because it rules.

Would it kill me to scoop coffee into the filter, pour in some water and push “on” in the morning? I don’t think so, but I like not having to find out.

When my alarm goes off, I can smell the already-brewed wake up juice waiting for me.

What kitchen indulgences do you love? Did you know you’d love your favorite luxury or did you start out thinking it was silly and wasteful?

Still und heimlich ist dieses Weblog Ende August drei Jahre alt geworden, ja glaubt man´s denn! Und eine zeitlang war es Tradition, die Gemeinde am Freitag mit einem Youtube-Schnipsel ins Wochenende zu schicken. Zumindest für heute greif ich diesen Brauch wieder auf, allerdings nicht mit einem großen US-Star, sondern einer Band von vor der Haustür – was fürn Deutsch! Die Mitglieder kommen aus dem Oberbergischen Kreis nahe Köln. Jedenfalls gibt es von “Covered Grass” jetzt ein optisch und akustisch ansprechendes Video in der Röhre und dazu gleich noch mit zwei Stücken. Da sieht man mal, was aus einer Band werden kann, also im positiven Sinne jetzt. Bestimmt auch geeignet als Werbevideo: Die Anfragen der Veranstalter werden sich nun erst recht stapeln!

Je dicker mit der Zeit der Bauch wird, desto enger werden die Hosen. Aber es gibt noch andere Nachteile. Beispielweise nimmt der dicke Bauch einer eng anliegenden Mandoline ihren Ton weg! Wer das Instrument locker über der Schulter hängen hat, merkt davon weniger als ein Halsträger. Ich aber bin ein Halsträger, weil mir das mehr Sicherheit gibt. Und offenbar gerade für unsereins ist der “Tone-Gard” wie geschaffen! Anfangs war ich ja skeptisch, ob dieses anklemmbare Körbchen für die Mando-Rückseite tatsächlich einen spürbaren Effekt hat. Aber nach einem ersten Test stand sofort fest, was das Ding bewirkt: Die Kentucky klingt klar und laut, als würde sie frei im Raum hängen. Tja, gekauft! 80 gut investierte Euro. Zudem sehen die Dinger auch noch schmuck aus. Das Instrument wird natürlich dadurch etwas schwerer, aber das tangiert uns ja nicht – vom Banjo-Gewicht ist es noch Zehntausende Meilen entfernt. Beim Mando-Festival in Solingen nutzten sowohl Mike Marshall als auch Don Stiernberg solch einen Tone-Gard. Da kann man nur sagen: Ab ins Gard-Tonstudio!

Just discovered: Life can be easier. Really.

It will cost you, just not as much as you might think. I thought it would be wildly expensive, an extravagance I could do without. And so I made a sort-of martyr of myself anytime I wanted to, you know, slice potatoes.

Or julienne carrots. Or any of those prep tasks that require the precision of a trained chef or engineer or at the very least someone who actually cares whether all the cucumber slices are paper thin. (Me, I’m good if maybe a third of my cucumber slices are as flimsy as the recipe requires. In my house, who’s gonna complain about thick-ish cucumber slices on little tea sandwiches? We are not that evolved yet.)

As I’ve not yet mastered the knife skills necessary for paper-thin anything, I caved and bought a tool. I try to steer clear of kitchen tools that promise much but then just contribute to life’s clutter. (Similarly, I try to steer clear of people who do the same thing.) But a mandoline has always been the object of my kitchen-tool coveting, even though I tried to do the quasi-philosophical thing and go without.

Besides, mandolines, in my shopping experience, tend to be pricey. They can be cool-espresso-machine pricey. “It”-hair-dryer pricey. Even pretty-clutch-from-ShopBop-I-must-have-you-for-Fall pricey.

Except for this one — the Benriner Japanese Mandoline Slicer (yes, all you language people, we’ve got some serious redundant phrasing going on there). I first saw it on Michael Ruhlman’s blog, and then kept running into it everywhere, as though it were saying, pick me! At around $23, how could I not?

Louise Howlett and Albert Combrink

Louise Howlett and I will be performing “Moonlight Serenade” in Kirstenbosch’s Chamber Music Breakfast Concert series on Sunday 19 July 2009, 11 a.m. with Breakfast served from 9.30 a.m.

The programme features various songs inspired by the night, including two songs by Gabriel Fauré: “Après un rêve” and “Mandoline”.

“Mandoline” is a Verlaine setting in which the singer views a party from some distance; wry comments about the attendees are followed by a rhapsodic description of their elegance as they seem to dissolve in the moonlit air. Debussy set it as well, changing the musical material with the mood of the poem, but Fauré does not develop thematically—a quiet, jaunty figure in the piano conjures the title instrument, and a returning rising scale between stanzas directs our view from detail to detail. A contrasting section introduces some whirling arpeggios and delightful dotted rhythms in the voice, to illustrate the turn of the dance.  Fauré chooses just the right key: the mandolin starts to play in the bright key of G major. At the first scene change, the rising scale is suddenly in F#, all the black keys coming into play—”a sudden bit of legerdemain that perfectly captures the swoon of disorientation in the dim light, not to mention the whole affair’s hushed choreography as perceived from without”. In poetry, the symbolist procedure – as typified by Verlaine – was to use subtle suggestion instead of precise statement  and to evoke moods and feelings through the magic of words and repeated sounds and the cadence of verse (musicality) and metrical innovation. While Debussy is more redily identified as a “Symbolist” composer, this work by Fauré resonds to the “magic of words and repeated sounds” with the magic of mandolin-like repeated strumming sounds, creating a gently bouncing accompaniment for the text. Here is a recording of a Mandolin, playing a sweet little french song by Georges Villard “La Petite Tonkinoise” , made famous in this charming 1953 version by the delightful Joséphine Baker.

A very beautiful and unusial version of “Mandoline” by counter-tenor Philippe Jaroussky and pianist Jerome Ducros, sung in a vocal coaching session with singing teacher Nicole Fallien.

Joyce Di Donato and Julius Drake give a stylish and elegant performance.

A surprisingly charming performance by Armenian mezzo-soprano Zara Dolukhanova, who uses her colloratura mezzo voice to tremendous effect.

This poem has been set to music by a number of composers including: Claude Debussy, Reynaldo Hahn, Gabriel Grovlez, Josef Szulc and Gabriel Dupont, amongst others.

French Poet Paul Verlaine

More about the poet:

French poet and leader of the Symbolist movement in poetry. Paul Verlaine’s life style wavered between criminality and naive innocence; he married a young girl in 1870 but after a year fell in love with the young poet Arthur Rimbaud, who was seventeen. With Stéphane Mallarmé and Charles Baudelaire he formed the so-called Decadents. In Verlaine’s works two impressions predominate: that only self is important, and that the function of poetry is to preserve moments of extreme sensation and unique impressions. In spite of the ‘vagueness’ of his poetry, Verlaine showed a careful craftsmanship in his compositions, using simple, musical language. He maintained the outward form of classical poetry, but his work opened the way for free verse. The Symbolists would often share themes that parallel Schopenhauer’s aesthetics and notions of will, fatality and unconscious forces, and used themes of sex (such as prostitutes), the city, irrational phenomena (delirium, dreams, narcotics, alcohol), and sometimes a vaguely medieval or Classic setting.

I enjoy performing this song. It has a sweet, innocent charm that is hard to resist. Louise’s response to the text is very alive and tells a tiny little story, like a quick snapshot of a painting, or a world that no longer exists. It does, however, make us feel like “donneurs de sérénades”. And that is pure pleasure!

Gabriel Fauré

Gestern brachte die Deutsche Post einen wattierten Umschlag aus Knoxville/Tennessee. Was steckte drin? Eine Auswahl der edlen “Blue Chip“-Picks, von den Modellen TPR und TAD über TD bis TP. Da muss ich mich jetzt erstmal durchwuseln. Sowas zu testen, wird ein Weilchen in Anspruch nehmen – denn man muss sich in der Regel ja an ein neues Pick zunächst gewöhnen. Dann gilt es, die Varianten untereinander zu vergleichen, um anschließend zu raten, was sich für den Mandolinenspieler empfiehlt. Wobei bereits das ein subjektiver Vorgang sein wird. Ein bisschen was über diese hoch gelobten Picks war hier bereits zu lesen. Mal gespannt, wie der persönliche Augenschein ausfällt – durch die Hymnen im Mandolin Café wird der Erwartungsdruck ja extrem gesteigert. Auf jeden Fall darf schon gesagt werden, dass Blue-Chip-Chef Matthew Goins ein sehr freundlicher Mensch ist, der meine vorsichtige Anfrage nach einem Testpick mit einer ganzen Auswahl an Plektren beantwortet hat – bei einem Stückpreis von 35 Dollar im Verkauf. Ob große Firmen wohl auch so großzügig wären? Demnächst hier also mehr zu den Blue Chips.

Ist das jetzt die Fortsetzung des Independent Rock mit anderen Mitteln? Oder die Übertragung des Bluegrass in den Rock ‘ n’ Roll? Bisher kam die “Yonder Mountain String Band” hier jedenfalls nicht zu Ton – was sich dann heute ändert. Mandolinenspieler Jeff Austen bedient sich einer 1984 gebauten Nugget-F-Mando, auf die er schwere D’ Addario J75er aufgezogen hat – ja, wer rocken will, muss fühlen.

Fiddle Tunes auf der Mandoline – da winken viele gähnend ab. Immer die gleichen Melodien von “Red Haired Boy” bis “Fire On The Mountain” oder gar “Old Joe Clark”: muss dass denn sein? Nun ja, für eine Session bietet sich sowas schon an. Außerdem kann man Fiddle Tunes auch so oder so spielen – wenn man´s kann. “Fisher´s Hornpipe” wäre so ein Stück, bei dem viele gleich abwinken. Aber bestimmt nicht, wenn es zwei Herren wie Mike Marshall und Chris Thile spielen. Und weil es heute so schön kühl ist, können wir ein paar heiße Läufe locker vertragen.

Jethro Burns war die eine Hälfte des Duos Homer and Jethro, zusammen mit June Carter haben sie ein Lied gesungen, das vielleicht ein bisschen Abkühlung sorgen kann, wenn es draussen zu heiss wird.

Leider kommt die Mandoline etwas zu kurz, aber ein ganz kurzes Solo von Jethro ist doch zu hören.

Die Geschichte vom Schlaraffenland, wo einem die gebratenen Tauben in den Mund fliegen und Wein aus Quellen sprudelt, kennt jeder. Aber gleichzeitig ist klar, dass es sich um ein Märchen handelt. Auf dieser Welt aber tatsächlich vorhanden sind Läden, in denen die wunderbarsten Instrumente zu sehen, zu berühren und zu spielen sind. Wir in Deutschland kennen so etwas nur aus dem Internet und das Angebot mit den vielen Bildern versetzt uns in eine Art von Schlaraffenland-Gefühl. Obwohl alles, was dort zu sehen ist in den Online-Katalogen, natürlich bezahlt werden muss. Trotzdem. Allein der Gedanke, in einen solchen Laden einzutreten und alles genau untersuchen zu können, bleibt faszinierend.

Bill Graham, Kolumnist des “Mandolin Café”, hat ein solches Geschäft besucht, von dem auch wir Mandolinenliebhaber träumen: Elderly Instruments in Lansing/Michigan. Und auch er war dem Zauber erlegen, der sich in Gesellschaft feiner akustischer Instrumente entfaltet – wie sein Bericht zeigt. Ja, sowas hätten wir gern um die Ecke liegen. Es würde ein zweites Wohnzimmer, falls der Inhaber mitmachte. So aber holen wir uns die weite Welt per Internet ins Haus, surfen zu Gruhn Guitars und den Mandolin Brothers – und zu Elderly. Nur mal gucken. Ist auch viel besser so für die Geldbörse. Bill Graham hat übrigens bei Elderly gekauft, was wir auch immer kaufen bei solchen Gelegenheiten: einen Tuner und Saiten. So ganz mit leeren Händen will man dann doch nicht gehen.
