Balas, drogas, persecuciones por todo Chile y acción al por mayor. Esa será la tónica de la primera serie que la cadena HBO producirá en el país y que está terminando de tomar forma.

Durante diciembre, como cuentan cercanos al proyecto, estará todo definido para dar comienzo a la filmación, programada para el primer semestre del próximo año. Lo que falta ahora es el visto bueno de la cadena internacional. El proyecto es una coproducción entre las empresas Fábula, de los hermanos Pablo y Juan de Dios Larraín (Tony Manero), y Efetres, de Cristián de la Fuente y Rodrigo Flores. Ellos ya presentaron el proyecto completo a la señal extranjera y  esperan el visto bueno definitivo para dar paso a la acción.

HBO ha manejado el proyecto en estricta reserva y monitorean cada paso de la producción. La señal ha ido expandiendo su producción en la región paulatinamente y ya ha realizado series en Argentina (Epitafios 1 y 2), México (Capadocia 1 y 2) y Brasil (Mandrake, Alice, Hijos del carnaval). Según han dicho sus ejecutivos, su idea a futuro es poner en pantalla 52 horas de producción propia, es decir, que cada serie extranjera vaya acompañada por una latina. Y el proyecto en Chile es parte de esa expansión.

Entre los actores que están prácticamente confirmados figuran Claudia Di Girólamo, Néstor Cantillana, Francisco Reyes y Luis Gnecco. Aunque no hay contratos firmados aún, sí hay acuerdos de palabra. “Sí, yo estoy, y muy feliz, entusiasmado, porque es un guión de acción. Uno de los mejores que he leído”, cuenta, por ejemplo, Cantillana. Otros nombres con los que se ha conversado son Gonzalo Valenzuela y Luz Valdivieso. En el camino, en tanto, quedaron Santiago Cabrera, Jorge Zabaleta y Alfredo Castro.

Los 13 capítulos que tendrá la serie ya están escritos, por un equipo conformado por Pablo Illanes (¿Dónde está Elisa?), Josefina Fernández (¿Dónde está Elisa?), Mateo Iribarren (Montecristo) y Enrique Videla (Gen Mishima). Cercanos a la producción, que prefieren mantener su nombre en reserva, cuentan que la serie será 100%  de acción. “Es una road movie de persecución. Nuestra idea fue darle esa sensación de urgencia que tienen series como 24 o Prison Break, donde los personajes están en una huida constante”, explican. La trama comienza con una “mexicana” que resulta en desastre. Los cuatro protagonistas fueron contratados para mover un embarque de droga, pero la operación termina siendo una trampa. Por eso se ven forzados a huir, tanto de la policía como de otra organización criminal, que son los verdaderos villanos de la historia. Uno de los centros dramáticos de la historia es que los protagonistas no se conocían y a lo largo de su escape se van descubriendo los secretos que todos tienen. La persecución los llevará a distintas partes de Chile y la idea es aprovechar de mostrar los  paisajes locales.

Entre los roles protagónicos hay un hombre que entró al negocio de la droga a través de su familia, uno que es matón de narcos de carrera y dos que entran por razones más circunstanciales al trabajo. Mientras, el papel destinado a Di Girólamo es el de la madre de uno de los integrantes de la banda y que mueve los hilos desde la cárcel, una “especie de reina de la droga en Chile”, describen. Otro rol femenino será el de una fiscal, que durante su investigación descubre que no todos los que están del lado de la ley efectivamente lo están.

La dirección general del proyecto está en manos de Pablo Larraín, quien supervisó la escritura de los guiones y que dirigirá varios de los episodios. Pero además, trabajará con otros cuatro directores que no han sido definidos. El rodaje duraría cuatro meses y la producción está coordinando los tiempos de los actores.

Hidden poetry is no new concept. Oftentimes words are revealed to us by using capital letters for the words that will be used for a new poem. In other works, the old words are blacked out. Either way, the hidden poem is the result of some form word elimination.

Oni Buchanan’s “Mandrake Vehicles“, a flash-animated series of poems, is a new and innovative form of poetry. Her poetry not only presents a new way of writing, but it also bestows on the reader a new way of reading, absorbing and comprehending poetry. Buchanan takes advantage of this fact in naming her poetry “Mandrake Vehicles”. I did a little research and found out that a mandrake is plant. No surprise there, since almost all of  Buchanan’s poetry is nature themed. But, the interesting part of this plant is that is resembles the form of a human being, when pulled out by the root. If you are a Harry Potter fan you will remember in “Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone” the magical screaming mandrakes that return people who have been cursed to their original state.

The mandrake metaphorically represents the poems as human-like. Through the flash animation, letters fall away as leaves, and words are formed from the left over words to make new poems, poems that were hiding in the midst of the original. Finally, after three times of revealing hidden poetry, a bare and essential poem is left, a mere eighteen lines of only two or three words each. It seems as though the poem is being stripped down to its roots. From start to end, the affordances of the poem affects the reader significantly.  In the words of J.J. Gibson, “affordances are relationships”. The affordance of the reader in the Mandrake Vehicles is to be stripped down, emotionally and literally through the sparsely worded poetry, to the ‘natural’, and’human’ form of the mandrake. The continuing metaphor allows the poem and the reader to be a mandrake shedding its leaves to get to its most human form, the root. The design of  electronically revealing the hidden poems is new concept in poetry and in this case is very moving. The  The flash animation allows Buchannan to form a relationship with the reader, so that in witnessing the act of revealing the hidden words and poems combined with the meaning of the words, the reader is afforded an emotional experience that may not have been possible in reading poetry from a book. In effect, the flash animation enhances the meaning of the poetry.

This bar in Culver City is known for being unassuming. It was in fact empty except for myself and my friend Alvaro who met up to exchange 6 month’s worth of life drama. We are old friends and get deep and share intimate details of shattered hearts, profound losses, family heritage, life celebration, and the basic “Thank goodness we avoided that pitfall.” He ordered Manhattans and I opted for a Tomato Martini. My drink was garden fresh as is most food and beverage in Cali! It was tasty and strong but I ended up switching it up for a vodka with grated ginger. Our bartender was brilliant. He played DJ with classic Guns and Roses with touches of TV on the Radio. He was well versed in contemporary art and art publishing. I also caught him tending to the plants outside the bar. Oh the beauty of California….Stop in the Mandrake for quality art shows, film screenings, or just good fresh drinks. The night we sat at the bar Art:21, the PBS series was showing for local artists.

Depois de a Fox Crime nos ter trazido a estreia do fantástico 9mm: S. Paulo, é agora altura de surgir para o público português mais uma série brasileira de qualidade: Mandrake. Trata-se de uma série da HBO Latin America/Conspiração Filmes baseada no livro de Rúben Fonseca “A Grande Arte”, sobre a dicotomia da sociedade brasileira, dividida entre a riqueza e a pobreza e, sobretudo, das pontes perigosas que se estabelecem entre estes dois meios. É nestas pontes que Mandrake, interpretado pelo actor Marcos Palmeira, um advogado especializado em chantagem, se move, numa teia de casos de chantagem que se entrelaça com a sua própria vida pessoal, ela própria dividida entre dois mundos centrados em duas mulheres, e com um estilo muito próprio de ver e analisar a sociedade em que vive, quer de um ponto de vista mais formal (como narrador), quer mais informal, nos encontros de final do dia com outros advogados no Bar do Zé.
Para os apreciadores destas coisas, chamo a atenção para a fotografia, que é um dos pontos fortes de uma série que foi filmada inteiramente em película e que foi um dos pontos que me impressionou bastante nos dois episódios que tive o prazer de ver.
Sem dúvida a não perder.

O brasileiro Seu Jorge tem regresso marcado aos palcos nacionais, com dois concertos agendados para os dias 9 de Outubro no Campo Pequeno e Coliseu do Porto no dia 10, ambos com início marcado para as 21h30.

Nestes dois concertos, Seu Jorge deverá apresentar temas dos seus quatro discos, incluindo as versões em português de originais de David Bowie, para a banda sonora do filme Um Peixe Fora de Água, no qual também participou, e temas do seu último álbum América Brasil, lançado em 2007, vencedor de um Grammy Latino na categoria de MPB (Música Popular Brasileira).

Acompanham Seu Jorge no palco 12 músicos,  que vão tocar músicas de estilos tão variados como samba, rock, funk e soul.

Os bilhetes estão à  venda nos locais habituais e os preços variam entre 22 e 33 euros em Lisboa, e entre 27 e 29 euros, no Porto. A produção é da Mandrake.

Seu Jorge esteve em Portugal pela última vez em 2007, altura em que visitou a Casa da Música, no Porto, o Cine Teatro de Estarreja, o Centro Cultural Vila Flor, em Guimarães, o Centro de Artes e Espectáculos, em Portalegre e o Coliseu dos Recreios, em Lisboa. O filme Cidade de Deus, de Fernando Meirelles, deu-lhe protagonismo em 2002, numa altura em que já tinha editado um álbum a solo e participado em vários projectos musicais, numa mistura de rock, funk, reggae e samba, o seu género de eleição.

O musical brasileiro Tom & Vinicius, que homenageia 50 anos da Bossa Nova e duas das suas principais figuras, vem a Portugal para três representações, durante o mês de Novembro, com estreia agendada para a Figueira da Foz, no dia 14.

O musical conta a história da amizade e da colaboração entre Tom Jobim e Vinicius de Moraes, dois dos maiores compositores brasileiros do período da Bossa Nova, desde o ano de 1956.

Em palco vão estar os actores Manuel Serrado, que interpreta Tom e Thelmo Fernandes que encarna Vinicius,  acompanhados por seis outros actores que interpretam figuras como Elizeth Cardoso, Dolores Duran e Frank Sinatra.

Com eles, seis músicos interpretam ao vivo alguns dos temas mais emblemáticos da Bossa Nova, como “Desafinado”, “Samba de uma nota só”, “Ela é Carioca”, “Por causa de Você”, “Garota de Ipanema” e “Valsa de Eurídice”.

O espectáculo estreia no CAE da Figueira da Foz, a 14 de Novembro, seguindo depois para o Coliseu do Porto, no dia 17 de Novembro. Em Lisboa, a estreia está marcada para  dia 19 , no Campo Pequeno. A produção em Portugal está a cargo da Mandrake.

Os bilhetes vão estar à venda a partir de amanhã, dia 24 de Setembro, e custam 22 euros para o espectáculo na Figueira da Foz, entre 19 e 43 euros no Porto e entre 22 e 55 euros em Lisboa.

Mandrake – Mandragora officianalis

Folk Names: Alraun, Satan’s Apple, Mandragora, Devil’s Testicles, Brain Thief, Gallows, Herb of circe, Mannikin, Raccoon Berry, Sorcerer’s Root. The Greek name from which the word ‘Mandragora’ is derived implies a plant that is harmful to cattle.

It was believed that mandrake possessed the magic power to heal a great variety of diseases, to induce a feeling of love, affection and happiness. That is why the roots of mandrake used to be as expensive as gold. However, except for the myths about this herb, there is also documented data that it has been widely used in ancient medicine. A Roman physician reported complicated surgical operations having been performed in Alexandria under the anaesthetic effect of mandrake. Arabian physicians also used it for anaesthetic purposes. In 11th and 12th centuries, mandrake was recognized as an effective painkiller by the famous at that time Universities of Bolonia and Salerno. The “amazing” effects of this herb are actually due to the high content of the alkaloids scopolamine, mandragorin, and hyosciamine.

It wasn’t until the Middle Ages that Mandrake became popular as a magical plant, and was hailed as a miracle talisman, capable of curing just about anything. It was the root in particular that emanated this mysterious power to fascinate and entrance people – most likely due to its shape, which with a little stretch of the imagination could be seen to resemble a human body. Anthropomorphism (projecting human qualities onto non-human things or beings) was an important aspect of the medieval mindset and the Mandrake root lent itself perfectly to such projections. These magical roots came either as ‘Mandrake women’ or ‘Mandrake men’, depending on their shape, but either way they were thought to be powerful allies who could perform true miracles for their masters – anything from attracting love where previously there was none, to getting rich quick and striking unsuspected luck, to warding off misfortunes and evil spells, to becoming invincible in battle.

Though similar in composition to Belladonna and Datura, Mandrake finds little use in modern medical or herbal practice. However, in ancient times it was regarded as a powerful and important medicine. The roots were pressed for their juice, which was combined with wine and then reduced by boiling. This was taken as an anaesthetic prior to surgery. The dosage was rather crucial, as too much would put the patient to sleep permanently. Dioscurides recommends a concoction of this juice mixed with honey mead as a purgative to eliminate ‘mucous and gall’, though again, the dosage was crucial. The juice was also added to a suppository, which would act as a powerful emmenagogoue and abortive. Inserted anally it would induce sleep. The leaves were applied as a poultice to swellings, inflammations and hardened glands.

A Mandrake root, placed on the mantel in the home, will give the house protection, fertility, and prosperity. Mandrake is also hung on the headboard for protection during sleep, carried to attract love, and worn to prevent contraction of illnesses. Where there is mandrake, demons cannot reside, and so the root is used in exorcism.

Magickal Uses: As a talisman or amulet; aphrodisiac, love magic, good luck in business or gambling, counter-magic, protector, warding off of evil spirits or spells, invincible against any kind of weapons, flying ointment.
Money placed beside a mandrake root (especially silver coins) are said to double, the scent of the mandrake causes sleep.

To ‘activate’ a dried mandrake root (to bring its powers out of hibernation), place it in some prominent location in the house and leave it there undisturbed for three days. Then place it in warm water and leave overnight. Afterwards, the root is activated and may be used in any magical practice. The water in which the root has bathed can be sprinkled at the windows and doors of the house to protect it, or onto people to purify them.

The mandrake has also long served as a poppet in image magic, but its extreme scarcity and high cost usually forces the magician and Witch to look for substitutes; ash roots, apples, the root of the white briony, the American may apple and many others have been used.

This plant contains powerful toxic substances, which if ingested can be fatal. Do not use internally and apply extreme caution even with external uses. Sedative, antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory hypnotic and hallucinogenic, emmenagogue, abortive, emetic, anodine

1. “Ci fu un’epoca in Occidente, tra le rivoluzioni del 1848 e lo scioglimento del movimento comunista europeo in concomitanza con la fine dell’URSS, in tutto centocinquanta anni, in cui l’esistenza di partiti politici “di classe” garantiva una rappresentanza più o meno cospicua delle classi non possidenti, immesse direttamente, in tal modo, nel ceto politico; e sia pure in posizione minoritaria” (Luciano Canfora, Critica della retorica democratica, p. 37). Si potrebbe restringere il periodo al 1919-1989, e il ragionamento, con qualche chiarimento, regge. Canfora prosegue il discorso riflettendo sul formarsi di un’élite interna ai partiti di classe; tuttavia si potrebbe considerare la questione nella prospettiva dell’elettorato, che l’autore definisce classi non possidenti. Parafrasando: in un periodo che va almeno dal 1919 al 1989, in Occidente, le classi non possidenti votavano i partiti politici “di classe”, che ne garantivano una rappresentanza: rappresentanza diretta e sia pure minoritaria.

2. Prima questione: in che senso rappresentanza diretta – o, anche, l’immissione diretta delle classi non possidenti nel ceto politico? Qual’era, insomma, il rapporto fra elettorato e PCI? Quale, e quanta, la fiducia e la reciprocità nel rapporto tra voto e rappresentanza politica? Anche se si immagina un voto di peso socio-economico, cioè dato in quanto proveniente dalla condizione di classe non possidente, il problema non è senza interesse. Questo voto comunque arrivava, un qualche rapporto fra voto e rappresentanza non poteva non sussistere. La migliore immagine di questo rapporto resta certamente il passaggio dal fazzoletto di stoffa al fazzoletto di carta. Un po’ per l’odore, un po’ per il raffreddore nel Bianco & Nero freddo, si è sempre taciuto su questa trasformazione.

3. Seconda questione: le classi non possidenti: di chi si tratta? Si potrebbe parlare anche di classe lavoratrice, o anche classe produttiva, ma non cambia nulla. Non è tanto da considerare chi effettivamente dava il suo voto, ma cosa s’intende con questo nome collettivo. Una cosa abbastanza certa è che non s’intende nulla che va oltre il 1968 o il 1975 o il 1989. Classi non possidenti: sembra una di quelle accezioni sulla quale solo una profonda analisi filologica e archeologica può condurre a qualche ipotesi.

4. Tuttavia non si tratta solo di un problema storico: il problema del nome collettivo interessa anche oggi. Chi vota a sinistra – o meglio, quale Nome dare a Chi vota a Sinistra? Per ragioni politiche e teoriche in cui è scritta la Storia dei Partiti di Sinistra, è impossibile non assegnare un Nome alla base: “Lavoratori”, “Classe lavoratrice”, “Operai”, “Classe operaia”, fino a “Precariato”, “Lavoratore cognitivo”, “Moltitudine”, “Popolo di Sinistra”. Questa Storia del Nome collettivo non può essere fraintesa, giacché il Nome in questione è esattamente il Nome della Storia. Di conseguenza, dato l’andamento degli ultimi venti anni, il Soggetto battezzato con questo Nome dorme, è assopito, è distratto, ha fatto il furbo, è stato abbindolato, ecc. Il Soggetto, insomma, si è voltato da un’altra parte e va ricondotto nella giusta direzione. I diversi Papà-Profeti lo chiamano con nomi differenti: “Moltitudine!”, “Popolo di Sinistra!, “Lavoratore!”, “Operai sociali!”, “Proletario!”, “Precario!”, “Lavoratore cognitivo!”. Ma il Soggetto o è sordo, o è diventato scemo, o non ascolta, o non si chiama così, o si è stufato di essere chiamato. Ma come diavolo si chiamerà questo Soggetto? I vari Papà-Profeti sono molto indaffarati ad accertarsi che il Nome con cui lo chiamano sia quello Vero: ne va, del resto, di una Storia intera, la Storia delle Scritture e la Scrittura della Storia.

5. Canfora scrive che lo scioglimento del movimento comunista europeo è avvenuto in concomitanza con la fine dell’URSS, e non a causa di quest’ultimo evento. In un certo senso, sembra suggerire un rapporto d’indipendenza: intorno alla fine degli anni Ottanta e inizi degli anni Novanta si è sciolto il movimento comunista europeo e contemporaneamente e crollato il regime sovietico. Da un punto di vista storico si tratta di una questione interessante, e costruendo un ragionamento controfattuale ci si chiede: “cosa sarebbe successo se i movimenti comunisti europei non si fossero sciolti?”. Perché potevano anche non sciogliersi! Luciano Gallino: “La capitolazione dei partiti comunisti è stata precipitosa, e per certi aspetti inconsulta”; perciò “Quello che si è smontato in vent’anni non è che si possa rimontare in poco tempo”. Gallino-Frankenstein si aggira di notte nei cimiteri d’Europa non per andare a caccia dello Spettro del Comunismo, ma per rubare cadaveri dalle tombe e fabbricare con pezzi di morto il nuovo Mostro. Del resto lo Spettro sembra avere già parlato con lui: “Han detto che mentre dormivo nel giardino mi morse una serpe – così l’orecchio di tutti è ingannato vilmente da una falsa storia della mia morte”. Bisognerebbe fare qualcosa, magari uno Spettacolo, un’Assemblea di Delegati, una Federazione di Compagni, un Movimento Costituente, così, tanto per verificare se ciò che ha detto lo Spettro sia la Verità. Gallino-Amleto propone: “Sicuramente un recupero della teoria critica, intesa non soltanto come recupero dei francofortesi che, comunque, avevano molte cose da dire”. Che noia! Il solito barboso Teatro Critico della Sinistra.

6. Si narra ancora che, qualche tempo fa, il Soggetto, prima e anche dopo il battesimo, non disdegnasse certi pubblici divertimenti: A quanto pare, appena maggiorenne, quel giovanotto taciturno s’imbarcò per le Indie orientali; viaggiò molto nelle contrade dell’Asia. Là comincia il fitto mistero che nasconde l’origine del suo male. In Estremo Oriente assistette, durante certe rivolte, a quei rigidi supplizi che le leggi in vigore in quei paraggi infliggono ai ribelli e ai colpevoli. Dapprima vi assistette, probabilmente, per pura curiosità di viaggiatore. Ma, alla vista di quei supplizi, gli istinti di una crudeltà che supera ogni limite di immaginazione dovettero agitarsi in lui, sconvolgerne il cervello, avvelenarne il sangue e renderlo infine l’essere singolare che è divenuto. Figuratevi che, spacciandosi per il barone H., penetrò nelle vecchie prigioni delle principali città della Persia, dell’Indocina e del Tibet e ottenne parecchie volte dai governatori di esercitare le orribili funzioni di giustiziere al posto dei carnefici orientali. Conoscete l’episodio delle quaranta libbre di occhi cavati, portate su un piatto d’oro allo scià Nasser-El-Din il giorno in cui fece il suo ingresso solenne in una città ribelle? Lui, vestito da indigeno, fu uno dei più ardenti zelatori di quella carneficina. L’esecuzione di due capi della rivolta fu ancora più atroce. Dapprima furono condannati a vedersi strappare tutti i denti con delle tenaglie, poi a farsi conficcare quegli stessi denti nei crani, appositamente rasati, in modo da formarvi le iniziali persiane del glorioso nome del successore di Feth-Alì-Scià. Sempre il nostro intenditore ottenne di giustiziarli di persona e con la compassata rozzezza che lo contraddistingue.

7. Nel giugno del 1938, durante una cena improvvisata con un delegazione sovietica in Francia, dopo aver raccontato questa storiella, osservando i volti inorriditi e meravigliati dei delegati, Mandrake proseguì: “Cosa volete farci. Due più due quattro è comunque una cosa sommamente insopportabile. Due più due quattro: ma secondo me è soltanto impudenza. Due più due quattro ha un’aria strafottente, vi si piazza in mezzo alla strada con le mani sui fianchi e sputa. Sono d’accordo che due più due quattro è una cosa magnifica; ma se si vuol lodare proprio tutto, allora anche due più due cinque è una cosuccia talvolta molto carina”. Dopo di che, insieme al giovane Lotar – che traduceva a memoria in russo discorsi preparati – si alzarono da tavola e tornarono a combattere in Spagna.

With the recent release of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince in theaters, young minds (or at least juvenile ones!) turn once again toward things magical. Anthropologists find difficulty in distinguishing between magic and religion, and many kids have been introduced to religious themes through this series of books and movies. I admit to having read the books and even having seen some of the films, and one of the memorable mythical sub-supporting characters that captured my attention was the mandrake. My first exposure to this herbological wonder was, naturally, the Bible. (Well, after Mandrake the Magician, of course.)

The tale of Reuben’s mandrakes in Genesis 30 shows a hint of that old white magic. Rachel bargains sex for mandrakes and the next time she is mentioned she becomes pregnant. Mandrake roots are often claimed to have anthropomorphic qualities – just how anthropomorphic depends on the imagination and how many the viewer has ingested. In the Middle Ages, the roots were classified as mandrake and womandrake!
