Maneki Neko

Maneki neko (招き猫 kucing mengundang?) adalah pajangan berbentuk kucing dari Jepang yang dibuat dari porselen atau keramik. Sebelah kaki depan (tangan) pajangan ini diangkat seperti sedang memanggil orang.

Pajangan ini dipercaya membawa keberuntungan kepada pemiliknya dan biasa dipajang di toko, restoran dan tempat-tempat usaha. Maneki neko yang mengangkat kaki depan sebelah kanan dipercaya dapat mendatangkan uang, sementara maneki neko yang mengangkat kaki depan sebelah kiri dipercaya mendatangkan pembeli. Maneki neko umumnya tidak dibuat dengan kedua belah kaki depan diangkat karena tidak ingin dikatakan sudah menyerah angkat tangan. Model pajangan ini biasanya adalah kucing belang tiga, kucing Japanese Bobtail dengan buntut pendek seperti buntut kelinci. Maneki neko juga dibuat dalam warna-warna lain seperti kuning emas atau hitam. Kucing yang menjadi model maneki neko konon sedang mencuci muka dengan menggunakan sebelah kaki depan.

Maneki neko merupakan contoh klasik untuk kitsch yang dapat dibuat dalam berbagai warna, aneka model, dan ragam hiasan. Pajangan ini juga dibuat sebagai bentuk berbagai macam keperluan sehari-hari, seperti: gantungan kunci, celengan, hingga pengharum ruangan. Bahan-bahan lain yang tidak umum untuk membuat maneko neko adalah plastik atau kain perca. Dalam bahasa Inggris, maneki neko disebut fortune cat (kucing keberuntungan) atau beckoning cat (kucing memanggil).

CAT LEGENDS

Ada beberapa cerita tentang asal-usul maneki neko, namun sulit ditentukan versi yang paling benar.

•   Goutokuji Temple, 17th Century

Cerita ini berasal dari kuil Gōtoku-ji, Setagaya, Tokyo.

Goutokuji Temple

Penguasa Domain Hikone yang bernama Ii Naotaka sedang dalam perjalanan pulang berburu dengan burung elang, dan lewat di depan kuil Gōtoku-ji. Di depan pintu gerbang, ia melihat kucing peliharaan biksu yang seperti memanggilnya untuk masuk ke kuil. Ajakan kucing tersebut diikuti Ii Naotaka yang masuk ke dalam kuil untuk beristirahat. Ketika baru saja ia meluruskan kaki, turun hujan disertai petir. Ii Naotaka sangat gembira karena tidak basah kehujanan. Sebagai rasa terima kasih kepada kucing di kuil, Ii Naotaka menyumbangkan uang untuk pembangunan kembali Gōtoku-ji menjadi sebuah kuil yang megah. Ketika kucing tersebut mati, sebuah makam didirikan oleh biksu untuknya. Beberapa lama kemudian, Aula Manekineko didirikan di lingkungan kuil berikut sebuah patung yang diberi nama Manegineko (招福猫児 ?). Bentuknya berupa kucing yang sedang mengangkat sebelah kaki depan.

Gōtoku-ji merupakan kuil klan Ii. Di kuil ini terdapat makam Ii Naosuke yang tewas akibat pembunuhan di luar pintu gerbang Sakuradamon, Istana Edo pada tahun 1860.

•  Jishō-in

Cerita ini berasal dari Jishō-in, sebuah kuil di Shinjuku, Tokyo.

Seorang samurai bernama Ōta Dōkan tersesat di jalan setelah hampir kalah dalam Pertempuran Egotagahara (sekitar 1476-1478). Tiba-tiba di hadapannya, muncul seekor kucing yang melambaikan kaki depan, dan mengajaknya untuk beristirahat di Jishō-in. Setelah beristirahat, kekuatan Ōta Dōkan pulih dan menang dalam pertempuran. Sebagai rasa terima kasih, patung Jizōson berbentuk kucing dipersembahkan kepada kucing tersebut. Di kemudian hari, patung berbentuk kucing disebut-sebut sebagai cikal bakal maneki neko.

Menurut kisah lain dari kuil yang sama, seorang pedagang kaya yang ditinggal mati anak tercintanya mempersembahkan patung Jizōson berbentuk kucing.

•  Courtesan Usugumo, 18th Century

Selama Periode Edo, di bagian timur Tokyo disebut Yoshiwara, hidup seorang pelacur bernama Usugumo. Dia mencintai kucing, dan membiarkan kucing peliharaan di sampingnya terus-menerus. Suatu malam, dalam perjalanan ke kamar mandi, kucingnya mulai menarik-narik keliman kimononya dengan keras, menolak untuk melepaskan. Pemilik rumah hiburan datang kepadanya, dan mencurigai kucing  kena sihir, dipotong kepalanya dengan pedang. Kepala terbang ke langit-langit, di mana ia membunuh ular yang hampir membunuh Usugumo. Dia sangat bingung oleh kematian  kucing kesayangannya. Untuk membuatnya merasa lebih baik, salah satu pelanggan memberinya-ukiran kayu gambar kucing, yang kemudian mendapatkan popularitas sebagai Maneki Neko.

•  Old Woman of Imado, 19th Century

Dulu ada seorang wanita tua miskin yang tinggal di Imado (sekarang timur Tokyo). Dia terus memelihara kucing binatang peliharaan sampai kemiskinan yang parah memaksanya untuk meninggalkannya. Tidak lama kemudian, kucing itu menampakkan diri kepadanya dalam mimpi dan menyuruhnya untuk membuat citra di tanah liat. Dia wajib, dan mebawa kesenangan, orang-orang segera meminta untuk membeli patung tanah liat. Semakin dia membuat, semakin banyak mereka membeli, dan kemiskinan diganti dengan kemakmuran.

•  Common Sense Competition

Mungkin yang paling imajinatif, tapi tetap menarik legenda, melibatkan dua toko ramen bersaing berbisnis sebelah satu sama lain. Satu set kucing keberuntungan dalam jendela toko, dan semua pelanggan banjiri toko itu.

Di antara berbagai manifestasi dari Maneki Neko pesona, yang paling populer adalah tri-warna. Namun kucing Jantan tiga warna jarang ditemukan di antara populasi dunia kucing. Memang, genetik studi menunjukkan secara meyakinkan bahwa gen tri-warna dalam kucing Jantan sangat jarang. Untuk alasan ini, mungkin, Maneki Neko tiga warna dianggap paling beruntung. Versi putih dan versi hitam Maneki Neko juga sedang populer. Kerah merah dengan bel yang ditemukan pada sebagian besar Maneki Neko mungkin berasal dari kebiasaan Edo Period. Selama masa itu, wanita-wanita kaya kucing menghiasi mereka (hewan peliharaan yang mahal pada waktu itu) dengan kerah merah terbuat dari hichirimen (Camellia Japonica, bunga merah), dan lonceng-lonceng kecil yang menempel pada kerah untuk membantu melacak para pemilik hewan peliharaan mereka. Menurut penelitian oleh Maneki Neko Club di Jepang, sekitar 60% dari semua Maneki Neko jimat adalah mengangkat kaki kiri mereka, sementara sisanya mengangkat hak mereka. Cakar Selatan yang seharusnya memberi isyarat pelanggan untuk memasuki toko, sementara kaki kanan yang dianggap menarik uang dan nasib baik (misalnya, celengan dalam bentuk Maneki Neko angkat kaki kanan mereka). Menurut sumber yang sama, sebagian besar Maneki Neko di hari-hari sebelumnya, menumbuhkan nilai uang di Jepang kontemporer berarti bahwa lebih banyak dan lebih modern mengisyaratkan pesona kucing dengan kaki kanan mereka. Acumulo cosas chulas e inútiles

Lo podéis comprar en cualquier tienda de los chinos, pero en verdad, el gato y la leyenda es Japonesa no China, estos chinos lo copian y venden todo.

El gato de los chinos, es bastante feo pero luego os contaré porque me hace gracia.

La historia-leyenda japonesa original

Cuenta la leyenda que en una noche de tormenta, un hombre rico, estando fuera de su casa se vio sorprendido por las fuertes lluvias. Trató de refugiarse bajo un árbol para no mojarse más.

Por allí cerca del árbol andaba un gato, cuyo propietario era un monje muy pobre. El monje sólo tenía a su gato en la vida. De pronto, el hombre rico, se fijó en que el gato le hacía un gesto, pero no lo comprendía. Miró de nuevo y el gato continuó bajando su brazo/patita una y otra vez. Parecía un saludo, pero más bien, trataba de decirle algo. El hombre rico se acercó a donde estaba el gato saliendo de su refugio en medio de la tormenta.

En cuanto estuvo cerca del gato, un rayo fulminó el árbol en el que se hallaba protegido sólo hacia unos instantes. El gato trataba de atraerle para salvarle la vida.

El hombre sorprendido y agradecido por la hazaña del gato, buscó a su dueño para darle las gracias y encontró al monje pobre. Cuenta la leyenda que agradecido, el hombre rico ayudó al monje pobre.

La historia es bonita.

Pero a mi el gato me hace sonreír en mis malos momentos, y me hace pensar que cualquier cosa pasa y es temporal. El Maneki Neko me dice con su patita:

Pasando… Da igual… Es temporal…. No te molestes…. No te enfades…No merece la pena… Esto pasa… Ni caso… es un bajón,sólo un mal momento… Ni caso.

Entonces veo su brazo, subiendo y bajando, y acabo sonriendo. Cualquier mal momento pasa. Siempre. Es lo que tiene el tiempo, que como el gato de la suerte- el Maneki Neko (o gato atrayente)- ayuda y protege.

Sono capitata più volte nella China Town di Parigi, spesso per mangiare in qualche ristorantino, alla ricerca di salsa di soya, nouilles e funghi neri ma sempre fermandomi alla parte più esterna, quella del grande supermercato dei fratelli Tang (mi piace all’italiana ;D) senza mai arrivare al cuore del quartiere. Ieri mi sono lasciata trasportare avendo un po’ di tempo libero. Rincorrendo una vetrina dietro l’altra sono riuscita a portarmi a casa un bel bottino.

Ho rimpianto di non avere con me la mia reflex, l’atmosfera già quasi autunnale e la luce ingrigita dal tempo rendeva il quartiere ancora più suggestivo. Magie che solo Parigi sa operare… basta prendere la metropolitana per ritrovarsi dall’altro capo del mondo.

Ero alla ricerca di un oggetto ben preciso, un maneki-neko, ovvero il gatto che secondo la tradizione cinese portà prosperità nelle case in cui si trova. L’ho trovato, il mio gatto dalla faccetta simpatica. Ne ho preso uno con due zampine alzate, proprio perché avrei bisogno di un doppio aiuto. Lungo la mia passeggiata sono capitata in un supermercato dove ho acquistato un po’ di frutta come non la si trova altrove, in una rivenditoria di tè dove ho comprato un sacchetto di tè all’arancia e cannella e un servizio con una bellissima teiera cinese e dove tornerò per acquistare un sacchetto di tè blu (è la prima volta che lo trovo!), in un negozio di cercamiche contemporanee dove sicuramente tornerò e dove per ora ho acquistato solo ninnoli da poco. Nella busta della spesa ho fatto posto a bacchette colorare e ciotole in terracotta.

Non mi resta che organizzare un tea-party, per inaugurare la nuova teiera e il nuovo tè…

I started Calculus today.  And the first portion of class was a review of some Trig.

I don’t remember Trig at all.

Seriously, not at all.

And then I have a brand new calculator.  My old one, the TI-81, died last fall (I have it on display in my entertainment center.  It’s right next to my Maneki Neko that looks like it’s wearing a turtle thong.  Really.  It seems to be some nautical theme and there is a turtle positioned perfectly over the cat’s nether regions.  I’d get up and take a picture, but I’m just totally burnt out).  I had it for 17 years, I was very comfortable using it.   My new calculator, the TI-89, is not the one that the instructor is using so I’m having to figure out things for myself while also trying to figure out Trig.  Plus, I couldn’t even read the professor’s writing on the chalkboard.

What the hell have I gotten myself into?

El Maneki Neko (招き猫) es uno de los amuletos más comunes de la cultura japonesa. Tradicionalmente
tenía la forma de un gato con la pata levantada y, dependiendo de la pata que fuera, significaba “suerte
y salud” o “dinero y clientela”. Actualmente suele llevar pilas y la pata se mueve como si llamara la
atención o tratara de atraer algo, normalmente dinero, pero existe un código de colores dependiendo
del cual, el gato nos puede ayudar o proteger de varias cosas. Por ejemplo :

- El verde : Cuidará de la seguridad en nuestro hogar
- El Blanco : Te dará buena suerte en los negocios.
- El Azul : Te ayudará a cumplir tus sueños
- El Rojo : Te garantiza éxito en el amor
- El dorado : Hará que mejore tu economía
- El negro : Evitará el mal agüero y aumentará tu felicidad
- EL rosa : Te ayudará a elegir la persona con la que contraer matrimonio

Leyenda

Hay diversas versiones de la leyenda de este simbolismo. A continuación se muestra una de ellas.

Durante el siglo XVII, existía en Tokio un templo que había conocido días mejores y que tenía
serios problemas económicos. El sacerdote del templo era muy pobre, pero aún así, compartía
la escasa comida que tenía con su gato, Tama.

Un día, un hombre de gran fortuna e importancia fue sorprendido por una tormenta mientras cazaba
y se refugió bajo un gran árbol que se encontraba cerca del templo. Mientras esperaba a que amainara
la tormenta, el hombre vio que un gato le hacía señas para que se acercara a la puerta del templo. Tal
fue su asombro que dejó el refugio que le ofrecía el árbol y se acercó para ver de cerca a tan singular
gato. En ese momento, un rayo cayó sobre el árbol que le había dado cobijo.

A consecuencia de ello, el hombre rico se hizo amigo del pobre sacerdote, y el templo prosperó, con lo
que el sacerdote y su gato nunca volvieron a pasar hambre.

Tras su muerte, Tama recibió un solemne y cariñoso entierro en el cementerio para gatos del Templo
Goutokuji, y se creó el Maneki Neko en su honor. Se dice que un Maneki Neko en el lugar de trabajo,
el hogar o incluso una página web atrae la buena suerte y los visitantes.

They clearly have no understanding of exactly what they’re dealing with. It’s not just a messageboard, or a website – it’s not just the porn, mischief, or trolling covered in the press. It’s home to a passionate, active & adept web-enabled community, who are capable of more than most people imagine.

Ironically, just last night I was reading an extraordinary short story by Bruce Sterling called Maneki Neko. At its centre is a network of individuals connected by smartphone-like devices who are capable of incredible interconnected acts of goodwill, as well as a near limitless combined power to wreak havoc on anyone who opposes “the net”.
I couldn’t help thinking how we have pretty much all the ingredients for this right now: iPhone + gift economy + groups like 4Chan.

The story left me wondering just what the group who were able to stack the Time 100 Poll, create LOLCats & Rickrolling, and tear apart the life of a dodgy computer repairman (among many, many other things) would be capable of as time goes on.

Like them or not, they set an example of the kind of crowdsourced action we’ll probably need for turning around our world in crisis.

For now, AT&T have made themselves a target, and we’ll soon see what retaliation is coming their way.

Todos habréis visto el anuncio de Mixta (de todas formas os lo pongo), pues esos gatos tan usuales en las tiendas de “todo a cien” son unos amuletos japoneses llamados Maneki-Neko (en Japón) o Zhaocai Mao (en China).

La leyenda cuenta que en la época de los señores feudales existía un templo en Tokio que tenía serios problemas económicos y se estaba destruyendo. El sacerdote del templo era muy pobre pero a pesar de ello compartía lo que tenía con su gato Tama.
Un día un señor feudal muy rico, llamado Naotaka II, fue sorprendido por una tormenta mientras cazaba y se refugió en un árbol. Mientras esperaba a que la tormenta cesara vió un gato de color blanco, negro y marrón le hacía señas para que se acercase al templo. El señor feudal, asombrado, se acercó y poco después cayó un rayo sobre el árbol donde se había refugiado.
A raíz del incidente el señor feudal se hizo amigo del sacerdote y financió las reparaciones del templo y, de ese modo, el sacerdote y el gato nunca volvieron a pasar hambre.
Tras la muerte del gato Tama se creo el Maneki-neko en su honor para atraer a los visitantes y la buena fortuna.

Según la pata que levante el Maneki-neko hay distintos significados:
- Si saluda con la pata derecha: trae prosperidad y dinero
- Si saluda con la pata izquierda: atrae visitas, también se cree que mientras más alto levante la pata, los atrae desde mayores distancias.
- Si saluda con ambas patas: protege el hogar o el establecimiento.

Según el color también tiene distintos significados:
-Tricolor (blanco, negro y naranja): es el que más suerte da y se dice que trae fortuna a los viajeros. Se le llama Calico.
- Verde: Atrae la salud, seguridad en el hogar y los buenos resultados en los estudios.
- Blanco: Pureza, cosas buenas.
- Plata o dorado: suerte en los negocios.
- Azul: cumplir los sueños.
- Rojo: éxito en el amor o ahuyenta las cosas malas.
- Amarillo: mejora la economía.
- Negro: evita la mala suerte y aumenta la felicidad.
- Rosa: elegir a la persona con quien contraer matrimonio (me impactó esto).
- Violeta: atrae la fortuna a los estudiantes y los recién graduados.

The Japanese seem to have a long-running love affair with cats. The myth of the Maneki Neko (the “Beckoning Cat”) has been around for at least a few hundred years.

Then there’s the bakaneko, a fire-breathing ghost-cat that can reanimate corpses by jumping over them. Sounds pretty scary. Where do they come from, and how do I avoid them!? Well, a normal cat may become a bakaneko if its tail grows to a certain size — one possible explanation for why short-tailed cats are so common in Japan.

It started with a short train ride to meet up with some complete strangers that barely spoke English.  And I have basically zero skill with the Japanese language by the way.  Pretty awkward for a while.  There was a group of Japanese people and then myself and one other person from the dorm.  We were supposedly waiting for more people.  Where was the mob of other people that normally come to these events?

At the wrong exit of the station.

But they came to the right spot eventually.

The bad part was that the guy leading the event held up a big sign while leading us to a woman’s house where we were to make our own maneki neko.

The good was that I got to see more of Tokyo.

About 15 minutes later we’ve somehow managed to fit the fifteen or so people into a single kitchen/dining area of a local woman’s house.  This is seriously amazing because the place was half the size of my bedroom and it still had room for the usual kitchen stuff, a kiln, and a whole shelf of maneki neko.  The woman explained that maneki neko means ‘beckoning cat’ or lucky cat.  Which paw is raised as well as the color have different meanings.  A left paw raised beckons money or customers, while the right calls for luck.  The higher the paw the better.  Then, whichever paw wasn’t up could be holding a coin or any number of things.  The cats could be any color, each of a different meaning, but calico was used frequently because it was considered very special and rare.

The cats weren’t that hard to make.  A little tube of clay closed on one end with ears, paws, a tail, a face.  Maneki Neko.  It was really a lot of fun and probably the only time there was any practical application for the clayworking skills I learned in high school.

The Maneki Neko (招き猫, literally “Beckoning Cat“; also known as Welcoming Cat, Lucky Cat, Money cat or Fortune Cat) is a common Japanese sculpture, often made of porcelain or ceramic, which is believed to bring good luck to the owner. The sculpture depicts a cat (traditionally a Japanese Bobtail) beckoning with an upright paw, and is usually displayed—many times at the entrance—in shops, restaurants, pachinko parlors, and other businesses. Some of the sculptures are electric or battery-powered and have a slow-moving paw beckoning. In the design of the sculptures, a raised right paw supposedly attracts money, while a raised left paw attracts customers. Maneki Neko come in different colors, styles, and degrees of ornateness. In addition to sculptures, Maneki Neko can be found as keychains, piggy banks, air fresheners, and miscellaneous ornaments.

While it is believed that Maneki Neko first appeared during the later part of the Edo period (1603-1867) in Japan the earliest documentary evidence comes from the 1870s, during Japan’s Meiji Era. It is mentioned in a newspaper article in 1876 and there is evidence kimono-clad Maneki Neko were distributed at a shrine in Osaka during this time. An ad from 1902 advertising Maneki Neko indicates that by the turn of the century they were popular.[3]

Beyond that, the exact origins of Maneki Neko are uncertain.

A frequent attribution to several Japanese emperors, as well as to Oda Nobunaga and samurai Ii Naotaka, is that one day the luminary passed by a cat, which seemed to wave to him. Taking the cat’s motion as a sign, the unknown nobleman paused and went to it. Diverted from his journey, he realized that he had avoided a trap that had been laid for him just ahead. Since that time, cats have been considered wise and lucky spirits. Many Japanese shrines and homes include the figurine of a cat with one paw upraised as if waving—hence the origin of Maneki Neko, often referred to as Kami Neko in reference to the cat’s kami or spirit.

Others have noted the similarities between the Maneki Neko’s gesture and that of a cat washing its face. There is a Japanese belief that a cat washing its face means a visitor will soon arrive. This belief may in turn be related to an even older Chinese proverb that states that if a cat washes its face, it will rain. Thus it is possible a belief arose that a figure of a cat washing its face would bring in customers.

It is unknown how the Maneki Neko became popular in the United States, but they were known in the U.S. at least in 1963, when Patricia Dale-Green wrote of them in The Cult of the Cat. They were most likely introduced to the United States by Japanese immigrants.
