Dude, all my adventures in New York are kind of a messed up blur of events, so unfortunately, this won’t be all that neat. But deal!

—

Friday, October 9th
Arrive there, I think, and HsuHan has told me that HsuKen is in town with lady friend, so I meet up with them in the yuppie shopping area, and they go shopping and we go shopping and I buy a couple things. Not too much to speak of. My hostel is fine, but I think I get a lotta weird bug bites from being there… hrm. My roommate Stewart is this British guy, and he seems pretty cool, but I can only stay in that hostel for that evening because the rest of the weekend is all booked up, so I have to change hostels. We loosely chat about going to church on Sunday because there’s this awesome gospel church near where the hostel is in Upper West side of Manhattan. That night we go eat pizza, based on Judy’s recommendation, and it’s delicious! That’s about it, though.

—

Saturday, October 10th
Walk around Central Park with Stewart in the morning and then we split paths. He’s supposed to call me the next day regarding going to church, but he never does! Ass! He went to a miscellaneous white party that evening with random people from the internet so maybe he ded.

Go eat lunch with Jesse [Jensen] and his girlfriend, Fara! It’s been like, five years since I’ve seen him, so it was nice. Him and his girlfriend are really funny and cute together, but are kinda unshy about PDA… ;x Apparently a lot of their friends hate hanging out with them because of that. Jesse goes off on how he hates Brooklyn and when he was there the other night screamed about how people in Brooklyn are ugly and poor or something. LOL! Guess it’s the newfound lawyer in him?

After that, I walk around Central Park a bit. Find some markets. This guy makes this cool paper holder stuff out of polymer clay… there’s the clothespins behind them that when you press them, make the mouths open. SO NEAT! Such a cool material…

BAD ASS.

I very much enjoy this picture since it’s fairly plain in itself.

They’re hardcore about haunted houses in New York. Wish I coulda gone to one…

That night, I stayed with Don [Vu] and Van [Vu] and Phil, Tammy’s boyfriend, in Williamsburg in Brooklyn. Their place had mice! I slept on the couch! I actually SAW the mice, too, which was a little weird, but whatever.

We went to eat at some Japanese restaurant, and it was quite delicious. It felt like being in Japan again, which was cool, and the menu was hilarious. Wasn’t cheap, though.

I just ate some takoyaki (was saving money and trying to not be a huge fatass).

Afterwards, they gave us a cup for using with the cotton candy machine. Score!

—

Sunday, October 11th
The following night, I was staying with Judy and Doug! For the day, we walk around and explore Brooklyn. They live in a nice, homey part of town.

Get some mothafuckin veggie pizza which is real nommy! New York pizza rules!

They’re going to go to the show with me at nighttime but we find out that it’s freaking sold out. Aaron tries to see if he can get them on the list but there’s no space… I get on the list, though. But before that, Aaron texts me and lies to me saying that there’s no way they can get me on the guest list because Muse’s bassist is in town and took all their guest list spots. Which I was like, “What? That’s weird,” about but it didn’t occur to me that it could possibly be a blatant lie. Turns out it was in fact a blatant fabrication. A pretty good one, at that. -__- To kill time with Judy and Doug, we get some yummy cupcakes that I’m going to bring to them because Aaron’s birthday was the previous day and he’d never eaten gourmet cupcakes before and that’s a crime (although these cupcakes were, in my opinion, not so good as freaking Cupcake Royale, which I still maintain has the best cupcakes, although people beg to differ).

Anyway, that cupcake shop also has these cakes in a cup… just basically really creamy cake they mash up into a cup. It looks really godamn good! The place is closing by the time we get there, though, so we just munch down and finish up. Then we go putz around this bar and stuff. Just chat. Play some Connect 4. Hollar! Then we go visit their friend’s house — some old musicians — and they pick up some stuff. And since they can’t make it into the show, they go home after that (bummer! But it was a late show anyway and they are early risers for work, so they probably wouldn’t even have seen Le Loup’s set anyway. Ah, well).

I get to the Mercury Lounge to meet up with Aaron and John and James.

Sold out show which must be a good feeling. It was a really good show, perhaps the best I’ve seen them ever, although I guess Aaron felt really weird about it. Went for an aimless walk after their set cuz that’s what Aaron and I do a lot of the time we hang out, and he was talking about his girl problems a lot. Good fun times.

Later on, I’m hungry, so I wanna eat some falafel… so we go next door to this yummy falafel place which makes them SPICY — a thing I’ve never had. Aaron teases me nonstop about how I eat and it’s embarrassing and really messy and self-conscious-making. Post making fun of me, he goes off on some hilarious really long monologue tirade about how he needs to do interviews for me (like for Micachu) and pretends to be a businessman trying to help me succeed and yadda yadda and he says that he understands that I like who I am and don’t want money to change who I am, etc. etc. but that if I just let him do interviews then I’ll have more success than I know what do with, basically. It was a totally really ridiculously long joke where he played some character, and he definitely really got into it. Ha.

—

Monday, October 12th
Wake up and head to Coney Island! It’s in southern Brooklyn and is just a skip and a hop away from Judy’s place, so I head there by myself. After that, I meet up with Judy to give her back her key and then head over to the Bushwick neighborhood where my new hostel is. Bushwick is this really cool (and really small) neighborhood where there’s a whole lot of fun artsy stuff going on, and the New York Loft Hostel is located there. Really awesome hostel, which I highly recommend. It’s not for people who don’t like being in a central location, though, but it is definitely for people who like going to New York just to hang in Brooklyn. Far as I’m concerned, Manhattan kinda sucks. Brooklyn’s where it’s at, dawg. (Although just by sheer quantity of things to do there are at least a few good things to do in Manhattan.)

Didn’t get to eat the highly regarded Nathan’s cheese fries at Coney Island because I was stuffed already. I bought some hummus from the supermarket and ate the shit out of it — while walking, while hanging out on the Coney Island Boardwalk with the seagulls… yum! I love hummussssssssss! Coney Island was more thriving than I’d anticipated; I thought it would be closed for the season but there were definitely people walking around. Not that many people, mind you, but that’s fine, really. It’s kinda small and sad, and I don’t think the average person would find it all that entertaining, but I did, for sure.

Aaron and I were supposed to hang out that day, but he was impossible to get a hold of! Turns out he was chillin real hard at a friend’s place literally like… within a mile from my hostel. Which is kinda funny.

Anyway, I checked into my hostel in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn, which I really like cause it’s really small and artsy.

Anyway, I think I walked around and explored Manhattan for a while since I hadn’t really explored it proper, and it was alright.

Jeanette used to do PR for this company, and it’s ridiculous they have toy phones as well as real phones. WTF!

Hilarity on the subway. Britney SPARES!

Tried to find a nommy dinner by way of aimless wandering but everything everywhere I went looked really good but was super pricey, and I eventually settled on this Indian food hole-in-the-wall that was pretty delicious but kinda ghetto… like, they had all the plates already sitting there, probably for hours, and when you ordered, they’d heat it up. It was fucking good, though. I’m a bit obsessed with Indian food lately. Not sure what the deal is. I used to just think it was okay, but since I started loving paneer, I started really, really loving the SHIT out of Indian food. MMMMMM.

Oh! Taisho

9 Saint Marks Place between Second and Third Avenues

New York, NY 10003

212-673-1300

http://www.yakitoritaisho.com/main/

Though I’ve been to Takitori Taisho twice, I’ve never been to its sibling Oh! Taisho. They’re basically the same place, though Oh! Taisho seems to get less love; it’s always somewhat less packed than Yakitori Taisho. Luckily Oh! Taisho zipped to the rescue when Yakitori Taisho already had folks spilling outside when the parents and I arrived on Saint Marks.

We only waited a minute to be seated, and I ordered a frozen alcoholic Calpico to enjoy with the rest of my meal. With the yakitori skewers, I ordered two chicken chunks, a beef, a pork, a shrimp, and a bacon wrapped scallop (initially I requested bacon wrapped okra but there was no okra to be found). And for some greenery, a tuna and avocado salad.

The skewers were fantastico as usual. The pork was fatty fat phat however, but we all know how fat=yum. As a corollary, the bacon was also fatty, but delicious. All the other skewers were lightly peppery and delish.

The tuna and avocado salad came with more, to my surprise, more meaning tomato and onion and spinach. It was in a ginger dressing. I liked how there was lots of avocado and the tuna wasn’t skimpy either.

Oh! Oh! Taisho! You rock just as much as your sibling, and I like you more even maybe since I’m awfully fond of underdogs and less crowds.

Every Tuesday around noon, I return home to grab a meal and retreat into my thoughts before returning to class. It also happens that at noon the children of PS 135 descend on the playground outside my window.

I never get the retreat I’m hoping for.

From my perch at my kitchen table, my window is a frame. There is no need for television during lunchtime. The children provide the entertainment. There is every ingredient for compelling drama in the fifth grade: love, heartbreak, jealousy and anger.

They burst from the school doors as though someone has just split open a bag of coffee beans that is straining under the weight of its load.

They pour onto the sidewalk and their voices shake me out of my thoughts and draw me to the window.

The proctor, enlisted in an attempt to bring order, unlocks the padlock barring the children from their sanctuary. He wipes the rust and sweat from the lock on his trousers and the steady stream that built up behind him bursts once more into the yard.

The pigeons that pick at the puddles and candy wrappers from yesterday´s melee launch to the rooftops. Their foraging is stolen away by screams and trampling feet.

The playground is designed for freedom; inside there is space for running, climbing and half of a basketball court. From the outside, the tall black gates block the lot off like a prison yard.

The girls with fluorescent beads in their hair retreat to the fence behind the sole play structure outside my window. Here, I am privy to all their secrets. They bicker over boys, share headphones and flop about to the beat of their iPods.

A lost basketball strays from the court. It rolls into the girls’ forbidden territory. The boys all point to one of their own. A scout is sacrificed to rescue the ball.

The boy keeps his gaze directed at the ball, never straying to eyes. The girls tower over him; their young bodies have matured much quicker than his, giving them a natural advantage. They could eat him alive if they wanted.

He is more interested in what’s hidden and forgotten, the “fossils and impressions of former existences,” as he explained in a talk at Columbia GSAPP on November 19th. Though a historian by practice, his process is more archeological than pedagogical. He says that “looking at discordant architectural and design related spots can give you clues to history of the place.” His inherent curiosity led him to uncover the original roof of the Atlantic Garden beer hall on the Bowery, which by all accounts had been completely demolished. Looking up at the ceiling of a souvenir shop in Times Square, he noticed patterns that turned out to be the remnants of a once elaborately decorated automat (waiter free restaurants with vending machines) from the early 20th century. Most poignantly, none of the buildings he writes about are landmarked, despite the history behind them.

Here’s a look at a few locations from his book that you can check out:

Underground Passageway in Chinatown

On numbers 5-7 Doyer Street in Chinatown, the Chinese theater once stood on this curvilinear street. Folklore says that the obtuse angle of this street contributed to gang warfare, as rival gangs could approach each other from opposite ends of the street unseen. An underground escapeway leading from the theater to Chatham Square still exists, now populated by acupuncturists, feng shui and travel agencies. Actor Ah Foon was escorted through this tunnel in 1909 one night, knowing that his days were numbered after repeatedly taunting a rival gang in performances. He made it safely to his apartment but was shot on the landing in the middle of the night.
What to See: Enter on Doyer Street, between Pell St and the Bowery, from a doorway east of the yellow Co Co Fashion sign, descend through multiple staircases and wander along hallways until a staircase leads you out onto Chatham Square.
The largest and most famous of the Bowery beer halls, this sumptuously decorated building opened in 1858. It had its own brewery, shooting gallery, an all female orchestra, a giant mechanical music box (the orchestrian) and movie screens. The battle over a Sunday liquor license lasted over forty years, with constant raids and arrests of bartenders, waiters and the owner himself. Despite all this, the Atlantic Garden was one of the more democratic sites in 1880s New York—a place for immigrant families (predominantly German and Italian, but there were even some Asians!) to escape the swelter of the tenements.

20-22 Elizabeth St. (Source: Curbed)

The clue for Freeland: the roof shape. From there, he discovered a 19th century stone projection off the roof.

What’s Left: On Elizabeth Street, now occupied by the Jing Font Restaurant and the Cantoon Garden Restaurant. On Bowery, a row of jewelry stores.

How to Get There: N/Q/R/W/J/M/Z/6 trains to Chinatown

Ultimately, what is Freeland’s message? The epilogue encapsulates his wide-eyed, detective-like perspective. Not a strict preservationist, he wonders how history will be passed down when the physical signs disappear:

When future New Yorkers explore their neighborhoods, what will they see? Will they be able to trace history…by finding visual cues and investigating them? New Yorkers are a curious lot…The challenge they will face in the future is that exploring history becomes more difficult once the physical markers themselves are gone.

Palm Springs, 2009

I couldn’t think of a more perfect place to start a blog on drinking than while having a Manhattan at the Parker Meridien bar in Palm Springs. Palm Springs defined the golden era of West Coast benders from the 1950’s through to the 80’s. Sinatra and the Rat Pack were regulars in the modernist town and practically every hotel from the period mentions, that they drank there. Palm Springs is still the weekend getaway of choice for Angelenos, Hollywood starlets and the SoCal gay community. Mix this crowd with some desert 50’s modernist architecture and a new spin on the sixties style Mad Men design and you have the makings for a great a weekend. Just add alcohol.

We head for dinner at Mr. Parker’s in the Meridien, making sure to get there early so we can have a pre-dinner cocktail. Only valet parking, so we pull up and immediately are immersed into the episode of Mad Men when they come out to LA.

The bar is appropriately opposite the check in desk of the hotel, absolutely brilliant! What better place for a hotel bar than right where you check in? Start the vacation off right. Head straight for the bar but it is jammed with a significantly over dressed crowd. Turns out they are not overdressed but are here for a wedding. No way we are getting to the bar before our reservation. Instead, we decide to head to our table early and order a drink there while looking over the menu. We are seated at a dark table in the back where my girlfriend sits against the wall, framed by a Spanish style painting of a woman with the most perfect breast and on the other side a painting of a woman’s disproportionately long legs and perfect ass. We are handed our menus and pen lights that remind me of my grandfather who used to carry one, not sure why.

I LOVE NEW YORK!!

We traveled to Iowa yesterday, starting at 5 a.m. in order to get to LaGuardia for our 9 a.m. flight. We made a stop in Chicago, and then flew into Moline. Hubby’s aunt picked us up, we stopped briefly at her house, and then her son, a senior in high school, drove us to Washington, IA where hubby’s maternal grandmother lives. We had a short, but much-needed, nap, and then went to the community’s monthly potluck dinner.

I piled up my plate, and when I looked down, I saw that it was all brown. In other words, not much in the way of produce. There were some green beans in one dish, sauerkraut in another, and some fruit in most of the jello salads that covered the dessert table. It was all home-cooked deliciousness, but it was not exactly health food. The dinner ended with the MC reading a few really bad jokes, and everyone singing “Happy Birthday” and “Happy Anniversary” to the people celebrating those occasions this month.

The evening was spent hanging out in the living room, my husband working on the laptop, Grandma reading, and me doing a puzzle. It was quiet and calm and lovely. But oh so quiet. Life here is slower, much less hectic. People talk a lot, but I’m not sure they say much. I’m not a great conversationalist, and I’m especially not good at small talk. But there is something to be said for the art of conversing, and being comfortable talking to your neighbors, and keeping it flowing, even if you’re only talking about the weather.

I can’t tell you how many people give the exact same reaction when we tell them we’re from New York City. It seems impossibly far away and big and very much the antithesis of everything they know here. They can’t imagine living there, or wanting to live there. We heard several stories of bad driving experiences, and a few more about how they visited there once back in the the 60s or 70s. But then, I can’t imagine living here, or wanting to live here, so I guess we’re all where we’re supposed to be. It’s nice to visit, though. There’s so much space and openness. It’s not oppressive and nothing feels squishy, even Grandma’s very small house, which, small as it is, would still feel roomy in Manhattan.

We will visit with all the local family on Thursday for the holiday, then we plan to visit with a Bates aunt and uncle in Iowa City on Friday. We fly back Saturday, with TWO layovers this time, stopping in Chicago and Philadelphia before arriving back at LaGuardia that afternoon. But for now, we’re off to explore the town center before driving back to the airport to pick up the in-laws, who are arriving this afternoon.

Or maybe your apartment’s kitchen is like mine and is barely large enough to cook a chicken wing, nevermind a full bird. No worries! Plenty of restaurants are doing the cooking, and thanks to New York Magazine, we have a full list of options, but take a look at some of my top picks below.

The Little Owl, 90 Bedford Street, Serving 2-9pm

Traditional Pick: Try the four course tasting menu with wine pairings, including a Riesling roast turkey, gnocchi, sage-buttered chanterelles, and pear-and-pistachio cake.

Unconventional Pick: Shrimp and lobster ravioli with burst tomatoes.

Freeman’s, End of Freeman Alley, Serving 3-9:30pm

Although a thought provoking statement it is my way of getting around to a thumbs up reference to

Although a thought provoking statement it is my way of getting around to a thumbs up reference to a member of the N.Y.C. police force. I always state that a photographer in search of that one terrific image is only going to capture that image if they carry a camera with them at all times. I claim to do just that as well.

About a week ago while walking on Canal Street in lower Manhattan, I watched as a NYC police cruiser stopped, the officer stepped out of the car and held up traffic in all directions. I did not immediately notice the poor lady walking with only a fabric head cover. It seems that the ladies wig blew off of her head and was rolling across the street and under the police car. The police officer kindly reached under the car and grabbed the wig in order to return it to its rightful owner. The officer returned t0 his car, the woman quickly replanted the hair on her head and the traffic commenced.

A kind gesture of humanity by one of NYC’s finest. Thumbs up to the officer and another great reminder to all of us to carry a camera.
