I recently watched the film Milk starring Sean Penn and directed by Gus Van Sant, a bio-pic about San Francisco’s first openly gay elected official Harvey Milk, on DVD. I was pleased I did as I found it very interesting and I’d not previously known much about him or his life. One thing did puzzle me though. In the 1970s in San Francisco there was a religious, marxist, socialist group calling themselves The Peoples Temple. Harvey Milk was a known and ardent supporter of the group, led by their ‘pastor’ Jim Jones. Jones billed himself as a humanitarian to the outside world and God to his followers. He was, infact, a maniac who led over 900 men, women and children to their deaths in the jungles of Guyana in 1978. Newspaper exposes on Jones’ brutal treatment of his followers and criminal activity had been reported as early as 1972 but were largely ignored until it was too late. Both Milk and San Francisco Mayor George Moscone, and other officials, were supporters of Jones and the temple and both were assasinated just over a week after the Guyana deaths by former SF City Supervisor Dan White. However, there is no mention of this in the film whatsoever. It’s not even referenced or alluded to. I understand that in a biopic it’s usually not possible to mention everything in a person’s life, however given the level of Milk and Moscone’s involvement in the temple, Milk wrote a letter defending Jones to then US President Jimmy Carter and Moscone refused to have Jones investigated even after his human rights violations became public knowledge. I really feel it should have been mentioned. Do check the film out just don’t expect to be getting the full story. Thanks for reading.

I had no expectations when i downloaded this, literally no expectations. Voltage has never impressed me very much, Maxstas quite new, and Nutcase i have never heard anything of. Having no expectations is usually a good thing i have noticed before, this is true in this case as well, as this was a quite welcome discovery. I am actually quite surprised by the levels shown. All three of them flow good, confident, and the different styles play well of each other. Most importantly there is never anything that really annoys me, theres nothing that is really awfully bad. It is all well done, well crafted, far more professional than i had expected. This may not seem like a very positive critique, but in the world of free grime mixtapes it certainly is.

Some tracks are, for my taste, a bit to commercial in tone. Some are not quite grimey enough for my taste. And some tracks do not concern subjects that really interest me, some talk about girls and, some talk about earning money. Some tracks just go by without any real substance to make me notice them. Still there are more than enough good tracks to make me quite happy. “Stars in the scene allstar” featuring Realist and Scruface by Rude Kid is a great track, once again Rude Kid shows what levels he can reach when he wants to. The same is true about the other possetrack “Make your way through the exit” featuring Krept and Konan, produced by Dreama. Voltage does well on his solo, on tracks by Maniac and Skepta, Maxsta on his own on a track by Flava D, though i’m not that fond of the chorus.

There is talent here. I wouldn’t go so far as to call it certified, i would say that the three of them are at a crossroads where thay have the possibilty to go on and make great grime. Or go the other path and make bait hiphop and swag swagger music. But they have certainly proved there is promise.

Well the DWTS (Season 9) finals were on tonight and the last three teams were:

• Mýa and Dmitry Chaplin
• Kelly Osbourne and Louis van Amstel
• Donny Osmond and Kym Johnson

I think this is the first time that I liked all three teams in the DWTS finals. All of them were good and had some pretty good dances. But I think I will have to go with my pre-season pick and favorite star — Donny & Kym.

The scores for tonight’s show were: Mýa & Dmitry — 87, Donny & Kym — 85 and Kelly & Louis — 76.

None of the three teams had an outstanding free style dance, so I think it is going to be the fans vote that will choose which team will win the mirror ball trophy. And that team will be Donny & Kym.

When I was five years old, I distinctly remember going to the mall with my mom to see a movie. I wouldn’t stop raving about Flashdance, and was broken-hearted when she said, “No.” (Back then, I didn’t know it was a rated-R film inspired by the true story of a female welder/stripper in Toronto.)

Interestingly, I never saw Flashdance until I was a college sophomore. Wow, what a corny plot: Alex Owens (Jennifer Beals), an 18-year-old who lives alone in a converted warehouse, is a welder at a steel mill by day and a bar dancer at night. She shacks up with Nick Hurley-her boss at the steel mill (who happens to have connections at the esteemed dance academy she wants to attend)-trains with her mentor/coach (who ironically dies a couple days before her audition), nails her audition, and apparently gets accepted (though I’m not exactly sure because the ending scene just show her running out of the building, with a smile, into Nick’s loving arms). No wonder this opened to poor reviews. Yet and still, it was a box office smash and grossed $100+ million worldwide.

I also remember hearing Michael Sembello’s Grammy Award-winning song, “Maniac,” on the radio. (Back then, I didn’t know it was originally written about a serial killer and the lyrics were adjusted for the film.) But what I really love is its music video. Sure, Irene Cara’s “Flashdance…What a Feeling” won a slew of awards-including an Oscar and a Golden Globe-but nothing beats the scenes of Alex’s body double running in place during dance practice, those ridiculous closeups of the side of her butt cheek, or that glorious slowmo leap through the air.

As an adult, I can appreciate what the film accomplished but yep, it definitely wasn’t suitable for me as a young child.

Tom Savini

 

Thomas Vincent Savini (born November 3, 1946 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.) is an American actor, stunt man, director, award-winning special effects and makeup artist. He is known for his work on the Living Dead films directed by George A. Romero, as well as Creepshow, The Burning, The Prowler, and Maniac. He directed the 1990 remake of Night of the Living Dead. Though officially retired from special effects, he has continued to direct, produce and star in several movies. Savini has been known to refer movie make-up effects projects to graduates of his school. He is frequently cast in B-movies, appearing in films such as From Dusk Till Dawn and Grindhouse.

Is good friends with horror director George A. Romero. The two have worked together on many films.

Turned down Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981) to work on The Burning (1981).

Tom Savini pilló un buen mosqueo cuando la divulgación de su participación como supervisor de efectos especiales en Nightmare (también Nightmare in a Damaged Brain o Blood Splash, y aquí conocida como Pesadillas de una Mente Enferma y Pesadilla Mortal en sendas ediciones censuradas en VHS) fue más y más acrecentada hasta convertirse en un chisme fraudulento que convirtió, a su vez, a Savini en responsable absoluto de los Fx para rentabilizar la promoción de la película, surgiendo así un nuevo mosqueo, el de Ed French, auténtico responsable de los Fx, unos realmente buenos que reforzaron el engaño comercial sin sospechas.

A principios de los 80, Romano Scavolini llegó a Estados Unidos en el momento del auge del slasher, el látex y las vísceras de pega. No parecía contentarse con probar suerte en el mercado con un slasher al uso, quiso destapar sus raíces latinas y caracterizó al subgénero de las cuchilladas norteamericano por excelencia con una obra única en su idiosincrasia: amaneró un guión absurdo y demencial y se empeñó de verdad en filmar las escenas del chapoteo truculento de la sangre y las mutilaciones con todo lujo de detalle, dejando la narración, los personajes y aspectos técnicos como la iluminación en un segundo plano prescindible. El resultado fue un giallo sórdido y gratuito parido en las Américas y prohibido en el Reino Unido (una de las tantas cintas que pasaron a engrosar la mítica lista de las video nasties) por su excesivo regodeo en el gore (la película es un prodigio en este aspecto) y utilizar gimicks escabrosos al estilo H.G. Lewis en el estreno comercial, como regalar bolsitas para vomitar con la entrada y organizar una especie de encuesta para adivinar el peso de un cerebro humano en un potito (!!).

Savini no quiso que la sangre salpicara más allá de lo que ya salpicaba y no demandó a los productores. Quedó todo en un tirón de orejas. Pero hablemos de Nightmare, de por qué me sigue fascinando después de ver por segunda vez su versión UNCUT, con toda su irracional brutalidad sanguinolenta y su casi mortal aburrimiento (dicha versión no sólo incluye la explosiva y reconfortante totalidad de los geniales Fx de Ed French, también algunos pasajes idiotas de diálogo y tiempos muertos soporíferos). Porque Nightmare es indecible, incongruente, enferma, chunga, fea, so cerda, amoral y anormal.

Scavolini es un buen tipo, me cae bien, el hombre, en serio, pero admitámoslo, está como un cencerro. Podría decirse que Nightmare es tan personal como el resto de obras de su director (ver su web que he enlazado más arriba). Él escribe y dirige esta infamia como encerrado a cal y canto en un geriátrico, y en ella, ridiculiza in extremis las instituciones mentales del mundo y las drogas experimentales para dementes psicópatas aquejados de esquizofrenia y demás enfermedades como la epilepsia (¿o aquí era la rabia?) con una excusa argumental que no es de este mundo y convirtiendo en depravada y enfermiza parodia sin gracia el legado de Michael Myers, un angelito comparado con el malo de Nightmare.

El negativo original con el que se han realizados todas las copias de la película está hecho una puta mierda, plagado de pelo, grano y vete tú a saber qué más. Textura güarra esta que degrada y pervierte la imagen en consonancia con las toneladas de enfermedad general que rebasa la película por todos sus costados. Como en otras muestras de terror tremebundo y subterráneo de la época, palo Night of the Demon, Maniac o Don’t Go in the Woods (no por casualidad, también video nasties), Nightmare se subraya concienzudamente a si misma en el gore directo y avasallador, elemento vitalicio con el que Scavolini despliega la maestría de la que carece en sus otras ocupaciones directorales. Una absoluta maravilla en forma de largos y repulsivos asesinatos, que recogen el testimonio de los mejores Lucio Fulci y Joe D’Amato (más que los de Mario Bava y Dario Argento), siendo esa sensibilidad estrictamente italiana la que hace destacar a este despropósito sin ningún sentido de la medida ni de la decencia a cualquier nivel, que además cuenta con un minucioso montaje, dirigido únicamente a estas escenas de sangre enviciadas que insiste e insiste en mostrar la posición que asegura el ángulo más explicito, por medio de ralentizaciones y planos repatriados que aparecen en el mejor y más oportuno momento, como mandan los diferentes estilos estéticos del cine de horror italiano reconocido en el barroquismo. Pocos (o no los suficientes) directores actuales se atreven a representar las maneras y la desvergüenza del Roman Scavolini de Nightmare. Necesariamente han de estar tan locos como Rob Zombie o Adam Mason.

Os muestro las carátulas de las tres ediciones en DVD extranjeras de la película. Hay una que contiene el metraje original íntegro, otra más dialogo que sangre, aunque también dice ser íntegra, y la restante, ni puta idea:

Am descoperit adineauri pe twitter un tip care e maniac jQuery, ca mine așa. Și am găsit la el un site super tare, care este de fapt o galerie uriașă de site-uri care folosesc jQuery. Este nemaipomenit, mai ales că fiecare intrare din galerie are și codul sursă complet pentru intrarea respectivă Site-ul de care vorbesc este acesta. E superb, mai ales dacă ai nevoie de inspirație pentru efecte sau… look-uri! Vizualizare plăcută!

So some of you may remember earlier this year when we reported Chan had joined the new reincarnation of the Korean group Uptown. They’ve dropped a couple singles and released some MV’s but a new fact was recently revealed last week about the MV for their debut single Black Knight.

In an interview, Christina Chung (who has worked with Chan in the past) revealed that she had an uncredited, impromptu cameo in the video. She stated that while visiting Korea, Chan asked her to come through the video set and hang out, but when she arrived she was immediately cast into one of the scenes of the video. Of course we had to watch the video back and look for her and guess what? Here she is:

It’s a humerous story but great to see friends helping each other out!
